RED SNAKE
Red Snake looks to emulate the linear eastern asian night market typology. The linear canopy is a l-shaped covering located in Shanghai Alley, a historical street in Chinatown, Vancouver B.C.
Red Snake emulates the skeleton of a snake. It is in reference to the famous chinese folklore story of the White Snake, a symbol of good harvest, health, and its ability to bring together families and communities. The canopy’s symbolic form engages the surrounding Chinatown community through its cultural reference to the community’s historical Chinese diaspora and its market program.

The structure is supported in tension by eight curved towers which evokes the maw of a snake. The canopy consists of a curved i-beam central spine with steel plate ribs reaching down from its centre. The whole carapace is covered in a steel mesh and polyester sheet providing shading and protection from the outdoor environment.
