NEW MIAMI DIALECT
Recently, a new dialect called Miami English has been identified by researchers, as per the New York Times. As Spanish became more common in Florida, words from the language were integrated into the English language, resulting in a new dialect. The new dialect uses phrases such as “ba ar de el carro which means get down from the car as opposed to exit the car, according to the Guardian. The meaning of this phrase has been changed to the literal English translation, rather than the grammatical English translation.
“I personally find the new Miami dialect much easier to speak as opposed to traditional Spanish, senior Nicole Jaen said.
CGPA ELEMENTARY IS 100
For nearly a century, Coral Gables Preparatory Academy has educated the residents of Coral Gables. As the oldest elementary school in the city, it was deemed a Coral Gables landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as per the official city of Coral Gables website. To celebrate, Eagle's Nest, a non-profit organization, aimed to raise $100,000 to be used in outdoor enhancements for the school on Sept. 23 at the Biltmore Hotel, during the centennial Gala. The gala was sponsored by politicians and organizations throughout Florida.
“I think that this is a big milestone because A has so much history in Gables, sophomore Kate Kuryla said. “Teachers do an amazing job of educating the students."
ELECTRIC BUSES IN MDC
Florida has begun to promote the adoption of electric buses in public transportation. Miami-Dade County itself already has electric buses in service but has committed to buying another 175 by 2024, according to the official Miami-Dade County website. The school district has also committed to buying electric buses by 2025, already having 20, according to the Miami Herald. It will also help relieve some symptoms that children have such as asthma caused by carbon emissions.
“This change to electric buses was definitely motivated not only by the increasing temperatures due to global warming as well as the increase in the price of gasoline," freshman Amy Calix said.
Congrats, Cavs!
On Sept. 19, 2023, Coral Gables Senior High School was deemed the o. comprehensive high school in Miami Dade County. As per U.S. News and World Report's yearly report, Gables placed No. 29 among all high schools in Miami Dade County. However, the other high schools placed above Gables were either charter schools or were full magnet schools. Furthermore, Gables took part in the #BragAboutMySchool challenge, where students created posts about the activities and academic opportunities offered at Gables.
