Since its inception, Gables Takoma Park was developed under the guidelines of the LEED certification program. However, additional programs and efforts are in place to ensure that constant environmental standards are followed.

Why LEED Is The Standard. Sustainable green building and development practices in cooperation with the creation of universally accepted tools and performance criteria are the objective of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). This certification program is sponsored by a third party organization and is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. The LEED program is a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in key areas of human environmental health, such as sustainable site development, energy efficiency, water savings, material selection and environmental quality. This established standard is utilized by a variety of professionals to provide the most researched and available criteria to any development whose main goal is environmental accountability.

Historic

Charm Combined With

Eclectic Individuality.

The City of Takoma Park was founded in 1883 and was Washington DC’s first planned commuter suburb. In the early 1900’s, the city was noted for its healthful qualities with a 350 feet elevation and the clean water supply from Sligo Creek. By the 1960s, the city gained the name of “Azalea City” for the delicate multi-colored flowers that began to enhance the landscape.

Its rich heritage has attracted a diverse population of writers, musicians and artists. The residents of Takoma Park usually enjoy community awareness with a host of neighborhood events.

Takoma Park is considered a “sanctuary city” and an official “Tree City, USA”. It is a nuclear-free zone and has won numerous awards for its recycling program. Historic preservation is important to the area with focused efforts to maintain Takoma’s colorful past.

Old Takoma is a quaint scenic downtown area with eclectic shops, restaurants and businesses. It is a picturesque town of unique eateries from around the world. Shops offer a convenient variety of services. It is not uncommon to enjoy the music of a street festival while searching for the sweetest apples at the outdoor farmer’s market.

Bordering Takoma is Silver Spring. This community is a distinctive mix of old and new while undergoing a significant renaissance with posh shopping, dining, performance halls and cinemas. Notable employers include Discovery Communications world headquarters.
