About the book ABOUT THE BOOK Magic Bridge is a 2-level EFL Course which aims at preparing students to communicate with native and non-native speakers. This course focuses on 9 to 10 year olds and is designed to take students from a more playful type of course to a more formal one.
It takes into consideration the cognitive development of children in this age group.
They are at a concrete level of thinking but, in fact, are at an interface with adolescent thinking. For this
reason the book includes some magical moments mixed with more challenging mental activities which encourage students to use new cognitive functions. Because learners at this age find grammar rules a little
too abstract to deal with, grammar structures are dealt with in a natural way. The input students are exposed
to in this course is much more than they can produce; however, it will prepare them to perform better when communication is demanded from them in more advanced levels.
STUDENT’S BOOK Magic Bridge – vol. 1 has 6 units and provides 34 hours of instruction. All of the units are closely connected to students’ reality and focus on a variety of subjects, that learners this age like doing and like talking about.
In each unit, learners will observe how native speakers use English, analyze the language used and have an immediate opportunity to use what they have learned.
Each unit has been designed to enable learners to build on their own knowledge and have
ample opportunities to try out the new language they have encountered. In this way three stages have been created for each unit: exposition, noticing and production.
UNIT SECTIONS • Conversation In this section students will listen to and read a conversation between two or more
speakers. In this exposition or input phase the amount of input is larger than the amount
of language learners will be practicing; it is a moment when they have an opportunity to experience how language works in real communication among native speakers. IV
About the book • X-Ray This section is the noticing stage. Students will look closely at how language works in terms of meaning, form and social interaction. Learners will have the opportunity to refer back to the Conversation and lift out or extract the language they will be practicing later on. After doing it, learners will be studying grids
related to the language lifted previously and do some written activities which will contribute to make language more meaningful.
• Your Turn This moment of practice is the stage when learners will truly be producing, putting the language into practice and using what they have seen as a model.
• Story Time Reading skills are practiced in a range of opportunities throughout the course. In one of them, learners will be reading two books in each one of the levels. This section of the book offers activities in which learners will use
the information from the book to answer some questions and to role play different situations connected with the storyline.
• Reading Time This section is another type of activity in which learners practice reading skills. It is always a character writing about the topic presented in the unit. It will also be a model for learners to write their own versions on the same subject.
• Listening Time Listening takes place in a variety of moments throughout the course. In the first moment learners are
asked to listen to the Conversation for the first time with the objective of listening for general or specific
information. In this way, initial training in listening skills is provided at a level which is appropriate for this age. Another way to help learners to practice this skill is to have them listen to an audio file to check
V
About the book answers they write in different exercises. Finally, there is one specific section called Listening Time in
which learners are exposed to native speakers talking about topics connected to the ones in their books. They are also a model for learners to follow when they present their projects.
• Show and Tell The course focuses on the four skills a speaker must develop to be considered a speaker of a language:
speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This section focuses on two of them: writing and speaking. Learners are encouraged to produce a written text on the topic of the lesson and present it to their classmates. The
presentation contributes to expand learners’ fluency and autonomy by training them to speak to different people in various situations.
• Now I can . . . This activity is used to conclude a unit. It helps learners be aware of tasks they can now perform. It is important for them to leave the class knowing how much they have learned and progressed. It is also a precious moment for teachers to check on learners and see which ones need reinforcement of the content.
• Vocabulary Corner The lessons have lots of new words, so this section aims at having learners personalize words they find more relevant. The mechanism of writing these words down enhances memorization of them because they are words learners have established a connection with.
• Tasks Extra activities and games are some of the materials that can be found in the tasks at the end of the Student’s
Book. Since children in this age group need a variety of activities to hold their interest, these motivating activities can boost interest and help the teacher add variety to the normal sequence of activities in the unit.
VI
About the book WORKBOOK Learners who are studying a foreign language need time to work on their own at home where they have an opportunity to work out problems they might have in communication and request their teachers’ help if necessary. Homework enhances the chance for content to be absorbed and creates opportunities for developing good study habits.
Workbook exercises revisit the subjects seen in class which makes it possible for learners to check on strengths and weaknesses. There is one piece of homework per lesson and it is
advisable to encourage students to copy the exercises they had problems with in their notebooks to make sure they focus on the necessary corrections.
Some of the activities require learners to listen to audio files to check the answers to some exercises, to complete
sentences, and to provide learners with some language practice by listening and repeating sentences and dialogs.
LANGUAGE LABORATORY PROGRAM For every unit there is a Laboratory Session which is an audio program that is closely connected to the content of the course book. The programs have been recorded by native and very skilled speakers and
encourage learners to emulate pronunciation and intonation of their language models while working on interactive types of activities which foster listening and speaking skills.
WHO AM I? COLLAGE PROJECT The idea behind this project is to make students’ learning content and learning experience
memorable. In this project, learners will be able to personalize everything they learn, including vocabulary.
After every unit, students will prepare a collage related to the topic and write a text about everything they learned in the unit, which means that by the end of the level, they will have “designed” a book, containing a good part of their lives.
For this activity a Scrap Book accompanies the material which after the last collage work, teachers, together with students, finalize with a lace made of ribbons.
VII
About the book VOCABULARY POSTER PROJECT It is well-known that the more words someone uses, the more fluent he/ she becomes and the better he/
she can express himself/ herself. Bearing that in mind, the Vocabulary Poster Project was conceived to make vocabulary memorable. A different activity has been designed for each and every class. This project comprises a very important feature in this series.
VISUALS This two-volume series includes a variety of visuals: flashcards and cards - to liven up and enrich classes.
They may be used to introduce new vocabulary and to reinforce and review vocabulary already learned. To facilitate class preparation, a reduced copy of the visuals has been included in the Teacher’s Guide.
TEACHER’S GUIDE The Teacher’s Guide is an absolutely essential element for teacher to make the most out of the course
and keep classes lively and motivating. Teachers will find all the necessary information about each lesson: content, where the units take the learners in terms of language production, materials and extra activities for each class, and most importantly, procedures for dealing with the Student’s Book.
