urban sYmbiosis Loiza Street, a border between opposites, fails to work as mediator between two contrasting groups alienated from each other, creating instead a no-man’s land which lacks urban activity and accentuates otherness. The project strives to link and reactivate an urban tissue that has been deprived from social activity because of the widening gap between communities from different economical backgrounds -- the rich and the poor.

A dialogue between the city of space and the city of anti-space. The first phase of the project was to identify the reasons behind the lack of urban activity and the sense of otherness. In order to treat the sickness, I took the street between the two developments and re-zoned the area to be a mid-size urban scale typology allowing for comercial space on the ground and residential on top, using the term defensible spaces as a cure for the lack of activity. In the sorroundings of my site there was a lack of urban plazas, I used urban centers located in Puerto Rico as a reference. Thus for the second phase, the urban plaza concept became the parti for the overall development.

HOMOGENIZING SPACES Beaches and movie theaters dilute the distinction of social classes in Puerto Rico. The core of this project is to bring together programs that remove the sense of otherness making the use of these spaces equally usefull for every citizen. Conceptualizing these public spaces resulted in the addition of an DIAGRAMS OF FORM - KEEPING URBAN DENSITY OF PROPOSED MASTER PLAN - AXIS AND EXTENSION OF PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION outdoor movie theater with a slight slope AXIS AND EXTENSION OF PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION - DIALOGUE BETWEEN URBAN CONTEXT which emulates the second public space, the beach.

library’s repetitive structural object An almost excessive use of a repetitive object throughout the library emulates the language seen on ‘the projects’. These buildings, seen from a mere volumetric point of view, are represented through this repetitiveness. Ruled by the mass production philosophy, they lack the ability to merge within their urban context due to their organization, resulting in an ambiguous interaction emmancipating themselves from their immediate sorroundings. The organization of these pieces created inhabitable spaces, however the repetitive object in the library, while emulating the existing condition was ruled by the activity in their sorrundings. When perpendicular to the street the space formed is thought as more public oriented and when parallel to the street the space is thought as a private reading place. The use of the piece/object in certain spaces provides shadow to pedestrians and even the building itself retracts to create public spaces.

The team’s project was comprised of four students. Three of the students were undergrads and myself, a master student. The work was divided in such a way that each student had an roll into the production of the project. We all contributed equally into the design. I was in charge of the construction of the 3D model in a BIM software (Archicad) which was used to extract the pertaining drawings for a post-production phase (Illustrator - autocad) and to generate the renderings (v-ray photoshop). Also designed all the structural aspects of the project.

willets yards, queens concept diagrams Three primary forces (regional rail, local rail, and airtrain) converge onto a central location along the Flushing Meadows Park Passerelle. A pedestrian throughfare is maintained by pushing program massing to the sides. A central market loosely occupies the grand atrium on Passarelle level. An organically curving skin unifies the program by forming a single envelope for the all the programs. Program is distributed as a vertical gradient from public at ground to private atop. Sky lobbies serve as an intermediary between the public and private realms within the building. The slivers of program may be reproduced to continue the first proposed stage of building, or established further adjacent within the identified bounds of the site.

willets yards, queens drawings The project establishes its base datum on a series of casons and shear-walls at the height of the passerelle walkway, 37’ above sea-level. Here, the building’s main space is occupied by a market hall, with landscaped fingers extending outward to provide an extension of the project. As the floors move up in height, the east side is occuped by a joint hotel and co-working space, while the west side holds the upcoming LGA AirTrain. At the 101’ level, the AirTrain is replaced with a biergarten and resturants, and the 116’ level is capped with a larger co-working space. Facades on the East and West are comprised of a series of movable louvred panels, allowing for fine control of the sunlight into the building. The roof is landscaped, like the finger extensions below, further emphesising the wrapper. There are skylights cut into the skin to bring in natural light to the hall below.
