Project Summary and Site Analysis

Location

Existing Signage

Davis Bike Loop, Davis, Ca.

As is, the signage for the bike path is rather confusing, as it consists of faded green lines that are painted on the ground and some occasional orange/green/yellow arrows that were originally supposed to be temporary. Turning points are also very unclear and unless users are constantly looking at the ground it is very easy to get lost and continue on the main bike paths that are not part of the trail.

Runs across the Davis Greenbelt, going through various Davis districts including residential areas, schools, parks, Downtown Davis, UC Davis, as well as some shopping areas.

Audience/User

Vision

The bike loop attracts people from the Davis community that either want to get from one part of the city to the other and or people who want to do recreational exercise. During the week there are usually more UCD students and professors going to the campus, parents and children going to school, and professionals going to work.

The goal for this new signage and identity is to transform the bike loop from just a path to something that allows people to experience Davis. The cyclist will get navigational/wayfinding information while getting quick histories/statements/stories about Davis along the way. At the same time, staying true to Davis’ bike culture, community and identity, while keeping it fun and exciting.

Visual Identity

Reasoning The logo is an abstracted bike chain. The bike chain relates to what the path will be used for (bikers) and the name of the path (bike loop) without being too literal. A chain is a metaphor for the social links in a community. We hope to foster socialization on the bike bath and encourage experiencing the path with friends/family/neighbors/classmates.

Muted colors work well together. We went with a natural color palette so that new signs could fit in with their environments, but still be eye catching. There are already plenty of road signs with blaring fluorescent colors and we wanted to depart from this and give a more relaxed vibe.

Rivets are representative of the people in a community. The rivets hold the chain together in the logo and this represents the formation of community (coming together through bonds).

Extreme differentiation from their environment is not essential for our signs because the system is catering to pedestrians and bikers who move at slower speeds.

Gotham was chosen as the typeface because it is highly legible, friendly yet professional looking, and has a large font family that can be utilized throughout the sign system.

The circular form of the chain represents the concept of a loop.

The name of the path is Bike Loop Davis. By putting “Davis” after “Bike Loop” the goal was to emphasize the bike loop itself and make the location second in hierarchy. This way, the Bike Loop brand and signage system could be implemented across the country at different universities if it caught on in Davis.
