rethinking assistive design

Many of us overlook daily activities such as using a spoon, holding a cup of water without spilling and take them for granted.

Parkinson’s Disease (PD):

and progressive movement disorder, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time.

There are 5 stages We do not know the cause of it Men are one and a half times more likely to have Parkinson’s Disease than women.

There is NO cure.

The 4 primary motor signs of PD include:

1. Tremors - Uncontrollable shaking. - Resting tremors are more common, occur when the limb is at rest - Affect the hands, jaw, feet, and sometimes the head. -Tremors can be asymmetrical.

2. Slow Movement - Bradykinesha: slow movement - Physical movements are much slower than normal - A kinesha: absence of movement - Tend to not move - Tend to have a stare (causing drooling)

3. Rigidity - Stiffness and tension in the muscles - Lose mobility in their arms - Can make it difficult to move around and make facial expressions - Emotionless face

4. Walking/Posture - Parkinsonian Gait: small shuffling steps - Freezing cycles: gait is halted and the patient complains that his/her feet are glued to the ground. - Stooped posture - Falling is common

Added Movement/Rehab:

-sometimes does not send signals to feet to move

-audio cue

-freezing cycle

-sends signals to brain (completes the cycle)

-falling occurs

-less freezing cycles

“Sometimes, my brain does not send signals to my feet to keep walking, this causes me to fall a lot. Walking should be easy, I am loosing control of my body”

“WOW, rehab has been a huge help. We use metronomes to help with my walking. Its getting better and easier with each day. I am so motivated now!!”

Visual/ Audio Cues: - The visual cues are commonly transverse lines or rods on the floor (floor markers). - improve stride length and velocity in Parkinsonian gait

- The auditory cues are commonly rhythmic cues generated by a metronome or equivalent, set at or slightly above the subject’s usual pace. - increases in velocity and cadence

Parkinsonian Gait: Gait is one of the most affected motor characteristics of this disorder although symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are varied.

Freezing Cycles: lasting less than a minute, in which gait is halted and the patient complains that his/her feet are glued to the ground.
