Ethnobotany |

Ethnobotany is the study of a region’s plants and their practical uses through the traditional knowledge of a local culture and people. An ethnobotanist thus strives to document the local customs involving the practical uses of local flora for many aspects of life, such as plants as medicines, foods, and clothing.

Samuel Ethnobothanics | Brandstyle Guide | 4

“The natives’ botanical knowledge is disappearing even faster than the plants themselves...” Richard Evans Schultes

Samuel Ethnobotanics |

We are a team of scientists and artists who value sustainability, transparency, and knowing what we put on and in our bodies. Our products are locally processed in small batches, blended and packaged by hand. Initially, we wanted to design a product that we simply couldn’t find anywhere on the market: a sustainably and ethically sourced, naturally processed, utilitarian, unisex, beautifully designed, 100% oil solid.

Samuel Ethnobothanics | Brandstyle Guide | 6

Our community |

We are working to develop relationships with small-lot growers around the world to create a system of cooperatives from which we source our materials, reducing disparity and giving the farmers a stake in our company. We want to encourage the community between farmers and consumers. Community also means inclusion, unity, and acceptance of every human. Homogeneity, whitewashing, body shaming, and gender normative practices in the skin care industry have no place in our brand or ethos. Our products are from the earth for the earth and represent the hope for mutual respect between human beings and nature.

Our purpose |

Our mantra |

We witness the truth about the cosmetics industry. We understand the chemical aggressiveness that it treat’s our skin. We saw the unfair way it treats its producers. Our goal is to present to the market the ethnobotanical relationships that exist between the communities and the plants that grow around them (and with them). We created this brand and our General Salve No. 18 to fill the void set up by an industry that sells synthetic, homogenous, and superficial wellness products. Our brand is a launch pad for a different type of relationship with your skin.

HAND’S LIFE LINES

THE ENSO CIRCLE

LEAFS

The lines of the hand represent humanity and analogy, it is believed that in them are the traits of the personality of the human being.

Drawing ensĹ? is a disciplined creative practice of Japanese ink painting. It symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and the void.

The leaves have a vital function being responsible for breathing, feeding and protection of plants. They perfectly symbolize nature as a whole.

Samuel Ethnobothanics | Brandstyle Guide | 17

The logo: construction |

The ensĂś, besides symbolizing the absolute and elegance in our brand, with its rustic lines denotes something man-made

Samuel Ethnobothanics | Brandstyle Guide | 20

The leaves inside the circle are positioned in the center because they are the raw materials and the protagonists in our products

The leaves trace the lines of the palm of a human’s being hand, reinforcing our mantra: Communion between Plants and People

Capital letters were chosen to transmit the gravity of our mission with our company. We are working hard to build something for all people

The Parlour Sans font was chosen because it cognitively refers to beauty and care. Its corroded form conveys a bond with the earth

The logo: variations |

Vertical logotype The primary application of our logo. Should be used as a default in all instances.

Isotype or Icon Whenever legibility of the logotype is impaired by size limitations, it is recommended to use this version. Artistic use is also permitted to strengthen a message.

Horizontal logotype It should be used when limiting space that impairs the legibility of the vertical logo.

Wordmark The signature of the name alone must be used when limiting space and / or there is a need to avoid redundancy.

Samuel Ethnobothanics | Brandstyle Guide | 22

The logo: clear space |

Just like humans and plants, our brand needs to breathe to live. It is important to respect the clear space so that the logo is not affected by external elements. For the Vertical, Horizontal and Wordmark Logo, consider the letter M as a base measure and apply at the ends as in the figures by side. For the isotype (Icon), always consider a square as the safe area and insert the logo with 60% to square size.

Samuel Ethnobothanics | Brandstyle Guide | 23

The logo: Vertical logotype colors combinations |

The logotype can only appear in the three of the main colors. The preferred use is always on a white background in the Balance Gray color. The secondary combinations can be used too, but the these suggestions must be respected. Alternative negative versions The negative black and white combination can only be used when there’s impossibility of color usage.

General Salve 18 |

General Salve 18 is the response to what we learned about the skin and learned about the products that were available to the marketplace. Once we understood how our skin was formed and what it used to keep itself healthy, the invention was set in motion. Our mission was to produce a product which was additive to the skin in such a way that would allow the skin to strengthen itself over time and feel silky in the moment.

The oils we use are physically pressed out of seeds produced by certain plants. We have combined them as to bring the strengths out for each of them. Protecting the delicate ones by putting them in a crystalline structure. Balancing the greasy ones with the dry ones. The oil components are the vehicle and held within it is that same essence that the plant developed in response to its environment. We will use this vehicle to deliver different Ethnobotanics from all around the world and within the history of civilization, from soil to skin.

Samuel Ethnobothanics | Brandstyle Guide | 31

General Salve 18: pacakge art |

The Luxia typeface was chosen for our main product because it translates the elegance and beauty we want to convey to our consumers.

Currently, we have three essences, each with a specific color: Frankincense (green), Rose Absolute (pink) and Ylang-Ylang (yellow).

The number 18 is bigger than the font, highlighting what the product is and transforming it into a brand of its own, within the proposal of our identity.

The brushstroke is organic and analogous. Was thought so that it accompanies the path of the thumb while it embosons the packaging.

Samuel Ethnobothanics | Brandstyle Guide | 33

“The formulation will mature in the tube—it will reach final consistency after opening and usage. I prefer the material most towards the end of the tube, I look forward to finishing each of them. Its character is like the sunlight, it feels to me warm and waxy, which I like because it is dry. I use it on my hands and they feel better after I apply only the littlest bit, as it is concentrated. We designed our product for skin, for all skin of all people. What is in the tube, it all came from plants, and was made within them out of sunlight and soil, of water and air. Then it was expressed using physical and traditional methods only, it has never known chemistry.” –Samuel 4.14.18
