Reimagining and Reconfiguring Bach: Cello Suite 2020

University of Westminster BA Architecture 2019 Year 3 - Semester 2

3

Cello Suites Theater is designed as a tribute to Bach’s masterpiece. Hence the nature of this building exists as a memory within the city. This concept has been inspired by The Architecture of the City (1966) by Aldo Rossi, where memories are explored through the idea of urban artefacts.

4

Located at 44 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the site is surrounded by many theatres and music venues, the best place to experiment with a new kind of music auditorium. The map shows a series of ancient and contemporary theaters that spread energy and life around the area.

5

The following report focused on the weather features of the area and London. The building has been designed to adapt to London weather conditions and environment. The aim is to create a performance even for people who pass-by, who will enjoy the music from rain, wind and natural elements.

This new music auditorium is designed to reproduce the most sophisticated and authentic version of Bach’s Cello Suite. Bach used to perform in churches or private palaces, and most of the time these places created echoes that made the performance more theatrical and alive. Because all the materials were not meant to reverberate sound, some elements, like the smooth wood sound reflector and absorption panels from the Auditorium Parco Della Musica in Rome and the Curved glass facades from Casa da Musica in Porto, have been moved from their conventional places and reallocated in specific points where they can reflect music for the user, so to produce a unique experience. Following specific duration times of the notations, the segments obtained from the analysis of the pieces were scaled from seconds to meters and then assembled two by two, creating shape for sound panels. These panels have been places in a curved glass box, following a spiral shape where an artificial intelligence arm will move and play the most accurate version of the piece on the user. 7

Long Section The building links Lincoln’s Inn Fields with the rest of Holborn area but more specifically with some of the LSE’s branches (London School of Economics). The theatre will present two main music spaces were annually the staff will be able to change the sound panels and host different Cello Suites or Classical music pieces. The ground floor has a public music book-shop and cafe on the east side; in the middle, there is the post-performance space where the user is invited to reflect on this experience. All around the soundbox, there are small offices for the staff who will study the perfection of the sound and keep update the artificial intelligence arm. The underground spaces have different classes for workshops and music lectures and as well as an openair theater. 11

Part museum/gallery, part repository, part theatre, the architectural narrative starts with issues of displacement and display. The design proposal takes on different theatrical effects to evoke the experiential and spatial qualities of a ‘cabinet of curiosity’. This building has been designed as an extension of the existing Sir John Soane Museum occupying the rear plot,

19

and include an additional new entrance. In addition to the qualities apparent in the existing Soane Museum, others concepts have been furthered through the investigation of the various definitions of the words ‘theatre’ and ‘theatricality’. Hence the experience of architecture is seen as ongoing theoretical and physical responses.

YoyoMa inspired by Bach Cello Suite N.2

Music and Sound have been explored from various points of view to give the visitor a more profound and illusionistic experience that transports the visitor back in time. The union of YoyoMa baroque sounds and architectural elements such as light and empty mirrors have made the space more dramatic and fascinating.

The Sound of Carceri inspired by Bach Cello Suite N.2

The film ‘The Sound of Carceri’ is a unique attempt to combine architecture with music in the exploration of the vast and lonely world of Piranesi’s prisons. In many ways, Bach’s Cello Suite N. 2 in D minor, capture the same idea of vast emptiness and loneliness that Piranesi points to in his work. The film alternates between Yo-Yo Ma’s virtual performance of the Second suite inside the carceri, and look at the process of making the performance a reality. To generate such a dramatic and emotional space I decided to start from the deconstruction of the music itself. Starting from Bach’s original music drawings, I 1analyzed three main elements: sensations (a), movement (b) & and time (c).

The final drawing presents a series of convex and concave spaces which move on the paper. These elements have really interesting acustic qualities. The sound is easy to control and spread in specif locations and at the same time creates imaginary beautiful shaps and curves.

The Hide Orchestra Corridor

Long section through the new entrance of the museum. This crosses all the musical chambers and allows the sound to penetrate in some specific points of the path, accompanied by some historical artifacts. The set of these visual and auditory sensations carries the viewer into another dimension whose purpose is to remember the imaginary world of Piranesi and the Baroque Era.

This project originated from the idea of compiling different students together from different faculties. This new center offers students workshop spaces and classes where they can meet and share ideas and opinions of various projects. This gives the students the chance to meet new people and interact with a wider audience from the cityscape of London. Through a public exhibition space and public square, everyone gets the opportunity to see works from different minds together. The spaces are organized on the site with great rigor and rigidity through a grid that extends across the square inspired by the organization that Tschumi used for the Parc la Villette. The grid is composed of lines perpendicular to each other of 6 meters by 6 meters, in which some meeting points of these lines have been occupied by concrete towers that constitute some of the fundamental elements of the project as green space, three different cafè, offices, and links between floors. These towers are connected through a curtains glass walls that surround the building and a glass roof supported by a 3D truss structure supported by steel pillars and connected to the towers.

The client asked for a contemporary design for their new-build house in Richmond. The house has a spectacular glass, stone and timber features. The elevations have large metal windows on all the facades, taking natural light deep into the plan. I worked on the production of the various planning drawing and the final 3D model.
