VILLA O Private Villa

The project aims to create a new villa that has as a fundamental feature the relationship with the landscape in which it will be built. The project is composed by separated buildings penetrated by nature which create in the middle a piazza’ for social relations and connection between the buildings themselves. A system of other minor social points dislocated in the area have different functions and are strongly related to the landscape. All buildings have a wooden, X-lam and steel main structure combined with plane roofs and in some cases inclined to open the view to the rock walls. The relationship with the outside is mediated by light wood partitions, plastered inside, alternating with mirrored windows. Kitchen and living are an exception to this approach: they are structured as transparent spaces able to visually connect the square

and the entire building with the landscape and the sea. In all environments, the window frames will be made of thin metal profiles that will reshape the façades and scrounge the view towards the context.

The stone walls produce a central piazza and create peculiar openings towards the nature and the landscape

The new volumes are defined by stone walls towards the piazza. Lighter partitions with wooden structure composed by opaque and transparent modules open views towards the surrounding nature.

The volumes are sloped in order to guarantee a larger view range of the natural environment. The shape of the living room and the kitchen are influenced by the existing terraces and the nature.

A second light and natural layer of pergolas is added to the slabs of the buildings. The pergolas are perforated where necessary in order to guarantee the natural illumination.

The proposal for the expansion of the art gallery of Palazzo dei Diamanti moves from the idea of creating ​​ a building that establishes a dialogue with the existing one, integrates it functionally, without altering the peculiarities of the plan. The project maintains the vestibule - atrium - garden sequence, typical for the Renaissance palace system, releasing the main axis that visually connects the entrance to the garden. Designed asymmetrically in relation to the existing building, the pavillion continues the additive process that characterizes the whole building complex: the elements do not complete the composition of the palace but leave open the way for possible future interventions. The circular shape helps to “free” the façade of the Benvenuto Tisi wing: in this way the intervention safeguards the autonomy and the physiognomy of the ancient palace and approaches it discreetly. In a sequence of rectangular spaces and traditional setting,

the pavilion introduces an element of innovation: is “the room that is not there”, one that can “show” art and open to the city for an event or concert. It is the element of connection not only of the two wings of the Gallery, but the device with which the Palazzo dei Diamanti is related to the city of Ferrara. A glass corridor connects Biagio Rossetti wing and Benvenuto Tisi wing and leads to the new pavilion, a circular space that is structured as an adaptive and reconfigurable device to accommodate the various activities of the Palazzo dei Diamanti.

The island separates the center of the urban life from the area in the north, where the metallurgic factory and the Tamburi district are considered the most problematic for pollution and poor social conditions. For this reason the center has the potential to inject new life on a systemic level in the city. The project is articulated with material and immaterial interventions, with the goal of bringing the island back to a functional and effective performance. The Basic infrastructural strategy has the goal of making the general infrastructure efficient and modern. His intervention should help the island to get rid of the traffic, coming from its role of connection/crossing. The general decongestion would help as well to re-educate the inhabitants to use new maximized public transport, new alternative transportation (via water) and pedestrian bike circulation. The diffused requalifying strategy is partially developed simultaneously to the first one. It includes the punctual restoration of the existing building heritage, the restoration of those structures with artistic and historical value, till the demolition and reconstruction of new parts.

This strategy includes as well the improvement of the public spaces and circulation enclaves. The Performing infrastructural strategy focuses mostly on the waterfront and the interventions within the inner fabric (squares, terraces), which will duplicate the pedestrian and circulation apparatus of the island and will unable it to absorb a new cultural program for the long term. The new waterfront infrastructure is light and with a low environmental impact. This strategy wills to limit the physical intervention, leaving space to a rich future curatorial program of events and socio-economic scenarios. The socio-economic strategy is the most immaterial, yet the most important for the long term. Parallel to the precedent interventions, it defines the base for the future evolution of the island and its capability to welcome the new generations. A unique cultural program, developed by a pool of experts, will boost the image of Taranto among the list of the places to visit, contributing to combine micro and macro economy actions. These actions might help, on the long term, to transform the actual industrial paradigm of the city into a new service oriented one.

After the purchase by a monastic congregation of nuns of a land at Couço, in the Alentejo region of Portugal, a local architect was commissioned to build a new monastery. Started the construction, however, they realized that the high amount of retaining walls, the need for very deep excavations and the weight of the concrete structure would irreparably alter the soil and ruined the whole ecosystem. Once the decision was taken to stop the work, the monastery was built only for 20%, so the sisters required a project that would complete their building. The new project will have to substantially reduce the built-up area of ​​at least 45%, trying to create multifunctional spaces, reducing the size of the cloisters previously conceived by exploiting the natural context as a green space. The initial idea was to build according to the vernacular techniques and using the constructive method of compressed earth which entails enormous advantages: no cost of realization and transport therefore an

economical material, it has a great durability even with little maintenance, does not require specialized labor and recovers the cultural values ​​of the place. Starting from this principle, it was decided to combine the wood with raw earth used as roofs and in some cases also as a punctual foundation to reach the stable ground that lies deep. The project proposal of about 3300 square meters therefore includes three distinct buildings that define the monastery: the casalibus area with accommodation for guests and tourists, the square and exhibition spaces; the coenobium where nuns play their common life and their daily activity and finally the claustro that contains the different cells in which the religious live almost all day long in complete solitude. Thanks to a tank system for the recovery and filtering of water, orchards, medical gardens and craft workshops, the entire building complex is economically self-sufficient.

With the design for the new Textile-City-Park we want to create a productive landscape that invites all inhabitants and visitors to learn about making textile and about how many plants (and animals) provide the ingredients of producing textile fibers and natural dye. Each new plant in the park will have some relation with textile making. The ingredients can be explained and studied but also used during workshops and classes that will take place in the park and in several pavilions and workspaces. Knowledge and products can be exchanged during regular textile markets, festivals and fairs. These events combine crafts, arts, leisure and commerce to attract all levels of Prato’s community. Apart from this specific theme the TextileCityPark offers a diversity of green, spaces and facilities as the best city parks. The plants that provide ingredients for textiles also have esthetic qualities and some of them can also be used for medicinal purposes or as food. The park spaces combined

with several pavilions offer a divers and inclusive program like play, sports, gardening, community meeting, cooking, eating but also cultural events like art exhibitions, theatre performances, film screenings and concerts. The design for the TextileCityPark is carefully planned and detailed but most of all it is a flexible strategy that allows for adjustments in the process but also in the future use: Tree lines can be closer or wider apart with more or less diversity in species; the central open space can be bigger or smaller with a taller or a lesser hill; pavilions can be used for all different purposes and can be internally intensified.
