Motivation

Personal attitude Architecture studies have taught me to embrace a deeper understanding of the environment surrounding us. Urban space works in complex and contradictional ways. It’s capable to bring changes beyond it’s material, transcendenting further than space. Hence with every design solution I try to bring something new and sensitive to the environment. Moreover, (I believe that) the process of the work is as important part of the design as the final result. It is essential to combine social factors, functionality, aesthetics and practical ideas during the route to buildings practical life.

6 | GABRIELIUS VARNELIS | PORTFOLIO

My personal beliefs come from my own experience. As I have studied various arts, starting from blowing French horn, till participating in various volunteer job, I’ve reached conclusion that architecture combines them best. Rational thinking, academic book-based knowledge and intuition play important role in order to achieve creative result. Experimenting with different approach (in my own experience) can bring unexpected outcome and make the work thrilling. Collaborations often lead to new surprising discoveries, mutual experience and is an irreplaceable part of design.

WORKSHOP SIKON XXIV TEAM

Goals Thus, the strongest medium for learning (I always thought) is interaction with other people. I try to involve in social activities to meet different kind of people. During my studies I spent a lot of my free time in architecture student club organising student workshops, lecture talks and various events (INCM, EASA). Often these activities were time taking burden, but due that i improved my own skills, learned how to work with large teams and different kind of people. These acquirements helps to adapt to various situations and give courage to communicate with various audience.

Besides that I feel the urge to learn architecture in more practical way. Theoretic knowledge isn’t any good without real working experience, which (I strongly believe) is essential to professional knowledge. I am willing to do the hard work in order to make things happen and further improve my knowledge.

Vilkpėdė is one of the Vilnius industrial regions, supplying energy to the capital since 1951. Nowadays it doesn’t match current power consumption and is used ineffectively, unsustainable. In order the city to grow this chaotic urban territory has to adapt to a new demand. The main task of urban design was heritage conservation with new teritory usage vision. Changes could lead to a new

HILL (Lit. Loma) SCHEME

8 | GABRIELIUS VARNELIS | CONVERSION

sub center in the city. However this task was very complicated due its size, thus the development of this territory was made in collaboration with one of my colleagues. We saw that this project could become a strong junction between two different projects. Main guidelines and urban conceptual idea helped to establish strong connection and to create a contrast between their identities.

HOLLOW (Lit. Loma) SCHEME

The base of this project comes from the old name of the place. Semiotic identity becomes a interpretation background for the two master plans. “Hollow” (Loma) and “Hill” (Miškiniai) creates a dynamic composition between two neglected Neris riversides. The banks are used to create landmark ensemble which attracts more people and makes circulation between two territories. On one hand the “Hollow” create a dynamic silhouette

near the arteries of Vilnius (Tūkstantmečio street and Savanoriu avenue) on the other hand “Hill” creates core composition where the centre acts as business core and the outer ring as a periphery surrounded by public park. These both sites are connected via visual axis, streets and panoramic views. Different function program provides more activities for the local residents and creates various niches for action.

AGILA is a multifunctional tourism centre with a small theatre for culture activities. The main task of renovation was to rebuild a center with new scene for up to 500 viewers and establish solid background for other new activities: gallery, cafeteria, info tourism center..

32 | GABRIELIUS VARNELIS | INFO CENTER

Nida’s peninsula has strict traditional regulations. Iconic building structure resembles buried AGILA’S village. The main building part covered with sand illustrates how the dunes conquered old village. Underneath the sand hill lies multifunctional scene with stage box.

Elementary school - is a place where children build their educational foundation. It’s important to increase their creativity and create micro places to stimulate learning process not only in class rooms, but also outside. The school base consists of two different parts,

36 | GABRIELIUS VARNELIS | SCHOOL

ground floor and first floor. Each of them acts as catalyst to learn. Ground floor is open to its surroundings, while on the other hand first floor is ment for bigger concentration classes. Spatial arrangement creates the opportunity for communication between these two floors.

URBAN CONTEXT IDEA

SITE PLAN

SCHOOL | GABRIELIUS VARNELIS | 37

Ground floor composition is based on partly open plan. Extroverted functions forms active school program. They can open both outwards and inwards, depending on demand. Music, choreography, sport, art, nature classrooms promote further connection with the world.

First floor consists of introverted classrooms, hence bigger concentration is achieved without distractions. Micro spaces provide small recreation areas where children can relax during class break. They can also follow the activities taking place at ground floor.
