1 COHOUSING ROWHOME Professor: Jeremy Vorhees Fall 2019 / 10 Weeks
Rowhomes carry incredible historical significance in Philadelphia. They are staples in residential architecture, however, their usage has continued to evolve with the times. In this series of rowhomes, a cohousing project is designed to accommodate a newer integrated way of living among friends or even strangers under one roof. The design entails an alternation between public and private spaces, with emphasis on the core central spaces, or the shared spaces that hold the project together. Circulation to all private rooms branch off from the central spaces, forcing residents to pass through at least one shared space before getting to their own personal room. This helps to encourage interaction between residents, while also creating a dynamic split level design between the alternating public and purivate spaces..

2 ANANGU RANGERS STATION Professor: James Rowe Fall 2020 / 4 Weeks
Uluru (Ayers Rock) is one of the natural wonder’s of the world. Located in the central desert of Australia, on a sacred Aboriginal site, this natural attraction has gotten recognition far beyond it’s local people. Tourists from around the world come to see this site, however, due to their lack of cultural sensitivity and awareness, friction has ensued between the Aboriginal population and the Australian Government. In an attempt to heal the historical strife between the Aboriginals and Australian Government, new regulations were put in place to allow visitors to enjoy this amazing site, while still paying respect to the local people. Inspired by various cultural traditions of the Anangu people, the site plan is designed to resemble the traditional Aboriginal dot paintings, while also paying homage and replicating their historically nomadic lifestyle. The design takes visitors through a series of destinations. Structures, mimicing caves (a form of shelter that the Anangu people historically inhabited), serve as exhibition spaces that use story-telling through cave paintings to enlighten visitor’s of their history and culture. Travelling from one structure to the next, covered pathways allow for open views of the rock, while protecting visitors from the harsh desert sun. It is a site that prioritizes exposing visitor’s to aspects of the site beyond simply the rock.

3 MASADEGI ETHIOPIAN SATELLITE PRESCHOOL Professor: Kyle O’Conner Spring 2021 / 3 Weeks
Eithiopia is one of the most educationally disadvantaged countries in the world due to armed conflict, famines, and humanitarian crises. In an attempt to make education more accessible to the Eithiopian youth, Abay Eithiopia, a local NGO, is looking to build flexible model preschools in the Dillu and Hiddi villages, with plans of duplicating this model in other rural Eithipoian regions in the future. . This design follows a simple grid system, a technique to allow for maximum adaptability on various sites, as well as, ensuring simple construction methods for local builders to keep costs low. The main concept behind this project can be embodied in the word NURTURE or Masadegi, in the Amharic language. I define nurture as the state of being protected, enlivened, and educated. These principles were integrated into all aspects of the design, from unique windows in the form of different shapes, to alphabets painted along the school walls, and playful bamboo screens. These colorful screens not only provide privacy and sun shading, but most importantly, act as an educational tool for children to play/interact with, arrange, and count. This design attempts to provide educational elements throughout the architecture and details, creating a learning environment focused on direct and indirect learning through play.

4 COMMUNITY WELLNESS CENTER Professor: Ulrike Altenmuller Spring 2020 / 8 Weeks
With social issues like drug abuse, homelessness, mass incarceration, etc. affecting the lives of many of our friends, family members, or neighbors in Philadelphia, mental health is increasingly becoming an important concern to address. Many of the local mental health centers are found in clinics or hospitals providing information or medication to help heal their patients. In this project, however, the goal is to rely less on additional prescription medication and utilize some of nature’s innate ability to heal the human mind and body—BIOPHILIA. By bringing the outdoors in, a comfortable space where workers will be more productive and patients and visitors will feel at ease will be created, decreasing their levels of anxiety and depression. It is a place that can not only be enjoyed by workers and patients, but also locals in the neighborhood and Universities. With the experiential public gardens, gym, and yoga studios, they can also take time to keep their mental wellness in check.

5 WEST PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC PATHWAY Professor: Jacklynn Niemiec Winter 2020 / 10 Weeks
Economic instability has affected parts of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods, leaving some homes and buildings vacant. In an attempt to revive these parts of the city and uplift its citizens, this affordable housing and branch library project is designed to focus on serving the local community. This design entails a public pathway that cuts through the site, resembling the way that Lancaster Ave. slices through the street grid of Philadelphia. It splits the site, placing the housing near the residential neighborhood and the library near the commercial corridor. In an area with much vacancy, this pathway serves as a well-lit, inviting, and safe road for citizens to enjoy, whether they are making a trip to the library, stopping to watch the activity along the path, or simply passing through. Along the pathway are public gardens and the main entrance to the library, providing locals with muchneeded access to fresh produce, in addition to, educational programs and services. The affordable housing complex lies on an elevated platform to allow for privacy. An overhead roof garden structure, also adds privacy while gathering water reserves to feed the gardens below.

Lancaster Avenue, cutting through the grid of the city of Philadelphia, creates interesting corner conditions on the blocks. Replicating this idea, a public pathway, perpendicular to the Avenue, connects the commercial corridor back to the neighborhood.

6 Thinking In Section This design exercise was a quick two week assignment to help encourage thinking in section. Taking the currently existing Samuel Powell School’s structure and experimenting with a variety of solutions that could help transform the project was a fun, creative outlet, emphasizing the power of the section. My final design cuts into the building with a large central atrium. Wooden trusses not only serve as strucutural elements, but decorative as well, bringing drama to the project. A wooden structure is also integrated towards the back of the building serving as a covered outdoor space above with a playful staircase to the playground area.

8 UNITY MEMORIAL Located in Damascus, Syria, in the midst of a gruesome war, this project is an attempt to not only create a space to preserve the history that withstood this conflict, but also be a place in which all can come together and commemorate the innocent lives lost in the battle. It is meant to bring hope and happiness to those living within and visiting this once thriving city. The project respects the contextual, historical aesthetic by having two simple, geometric forms made of old stone. A tight, narrow pathway lies between the buildings, looking in the distance to the memorial within. The memorial, an interior organic form engulfed in white roses and lights, creates a moment of serenity, in stark contrast to the cold metal pathway taken to get there. An experience symbolic of that of the fallen soldier’s and victim’s of war--a long journey of discomfort leading to the peaceful, lightfilled final destination.
