JULY 1, 2012 - JUNE 30, 2013

hello Our first year as Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio has been full of challenges and changes that have made us stronger, smarter, and as sassy as ever! As one unified organization, we have accomplished a great deal for Ohio:

Nearly 60,000 Ohioans turned to us for care this year. Thirty-three teens became Peer Educators, and our health education programs expanded to more than 200 schools and community centers. upon thousands of advocates stood up for › Thousands Planned Parenthood when our services and programs were threatened by new legislation. Care is at the heart of our mission and is intertwined into every interaction with our patients and supporters. Care is inherent in every service we provide for the women, men and young people who trust us every day. I encourage you to take a few moments to explore how Planned Parenthood is preparing to thrive in the new health care landscape. We served nearly 60,000 people in our 20 health center locations last year, and we’re poised to see even more this year. No matter what, we’re here for Ohioans.

HEALTH CARE SERVICES PERSONALIZED, QUALITY

care

In the midst of changes to health care delivery systems and legislation impacting the way we do business, Ohio women can still rely on Planned Parenthood for sound advice and non-judgmental care. Each of our patients receives the personalized, quality care she needs to live her healthiest life. We believe that when people have the care they need, they make their lives – and the lives of their families – better and healthier. And that gets us one step closer to a better, healthier world. “My story is not unusual. Many of my friends have dealt with similar issues. Despite our income, geography, or position in life, Planned Parenthood is there for us.” Buxi Iacabone, patient and advocate, Columbus

“I went to Planned Parenthood after my attack because I knew the care I would receive there was coming from family planning professionals who understand women’s bodies and issues. I knew that their care would include protecting my privacy and keeping me in control of my own health care and body, something that can be really important to a survivor of sexual assault.” Audrey Imes, Peninsula

HEALTH EDUCATION & OUTREACH EXCEEDING

expectations

This year, 100% of our education and outreach programs exceeded their grant goals, providing more classes, workshops, trainings, presentations, and STI screenings for Ohioans than in previous years. MAKING AN

impact

Researchers from Ohio University’s Department of Social and Public Health evaluated two of the curricula PPGOH uses in classrooms with middle- and high-school students. Their results showed that the teens we reach increase both their knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and their behavioral intentions to avoid risky sexual situations. The results of this study will be published in “Family Science Review,” a national peer-reviewed journal published by the Family Science Association.

AND CONVICTION

We’ve always known that our patients, advocates, and staff stand with Planned Parenthood, and their dedication on behalf of all Ohio women, men, and teens was integral to our work last year. They shared our passion and conviction that politicians should not interfere with the private health care decisions between a woman and her doctor. We heard from every corner of the state – many of our supporters drove to Columbus to tell their personal stories.

national efforts

Across the country we were joined by a growing number of clergy who support reproductive justice and freedom, and they are being led by two of our Ohio supporters. Rev. Martha (Missy) Shiverick of Shaker Heights was elected chair of the Clergy Advocacy Board for PPFA, and Rabbi Jon Adland of Canton was elected vice-chair. Together they bring an interdenominational faith perspective to the fight for women’s rights to make their own health care decisions – including the right to end a pregnancy.

CHARITABLE GIVING

REGIONAL EVENTS SUPPORT STATEWIDE

mission

Our donors and volunteers opened up their homes, chaired special events, and hosted gatherings to share the PPGOH mission with their friends and neighbors. All over Ohio, supporters of the Planned Parenthood mission gathered to celebrate, talk, explore, and raise funds for health care and health education programs. Overall, there were 10 special events that raised nearly $300,000. We’re grateful for the collective effort that makes our events successful, and we’re thankful for the individual gifts our donors make every day. In the 2013 fiscal year, more than 5,000 donors supported the mission of Planned Parenthood through gifts totaling $3,846,979.

“Planned Parenthood. It’s a name brand that generations of women have counted on for trusted, reliable, accurate, and up-to-date women’s health care. It’s the name mothers pass on to their daughters when they’re giving health care advice. It’s the name friends share when they need birth control or have reproductive health issues. I support Planned Parenthood so it will be there for the next generation.” Ellen Schermer, Shaker Heights

“Planned Parenthood does vital work to advance the health of women who might otherwise have no access to care. Their commitment to the health of women will not waver. Planned Parenthood and its many supporters have been, and must remain, an effective voice for the women who need these services. David T. Abbott, Executive Director, The George Gund Foundation
