WHAT IS A TRAILER

A trailer is a advertisement technique used when promoting a upcoming film. A trailer is a series of carefully selected clips from the film, the scariest moments, the funniest ones and so on. Trailers are popular and people tend to watch them a lot, a trailer tells the story in an abbreviated way, it tells the story however without giving too much away, enticing the audience to want to watch the film. There are many codes and conventions in which trailers follow, although all trailers are dif ferent, they tend to stick to a certain list of rules. This is because they have been tried and tested and equal a successful trailer if they’re followed. However, over the years the have changed and evolved along side their audiences.

Film production logos  Film production logos are usually within the first part of the trailer. The production company can potentially benefit the trailer for example if for example Warner Brothers produced a film the audience would have high expectations due to their reputation. It also creates an idea of the type of film its going to be for example, if it was Dreamworks, the audience would know it’d be a big budget film and they have a reputation of making family friendly films.

Film titles  The film title features in every trailer as it identifies itself to the audience so they know what it is they want to watch. It usually featured at the end of the trailer when you’ve already been enticed by the trailer you have just watched. The font and colour can sometimes be an indication to the type of film its going to be, for example, Kick Ass is a comedy film and the font looks to be comedic and light hearted, due to the bright colours and friendly font. However a horror film would be dark colours and font that can help create a sense of fear such as Sinister 2.

Bbfc Age certification ď‚Ą Any film that is released is given a age certificate for their film by the British Board Of Film Classification, and this is usually shown at the end of the trailer. This provides guidelines for their target audience, for example if it is given U then it is a family friendly film, however if its an 18 rating, then its only suitable for people of that age and over. This can also indicate what they film may include, scenes of violence and sexual nature and so on.

Social media ď‚Ą A newer convention of trailers is to add the URLs, a Twitter hashtags to encourage the audience to find out more information regarding the film. Also it has the capacity to develop into an ef fective campaign if it generates interest on social media websites. Because people are able to tweet globally it can spark the interest of people all around the world and therefore can generate great interest in your film.

character ď‚Ą The main characters consistently appear in film trailers as it shows who will feature in the film, this can attract the audience by simply having a popular actor within the film which can increase interest and expectations in the film. The characters can also emphasise the genre of the particular product, for example Adam Sandler often appears within comedy films which could therefore indicate the genre.

sound ď‚Ą Trailers will include voice overs or soundtracks or perhaps use both, the sounding of a trailer plays a crucial role in intriguing the audience. This is because it walks the audience through the film, it will either explain the story or hint towards trying to interest the viewer or will emphasise the genre of the film, for example if it was an action film, the music will increase in order to match the pace of the clips being shown. Sometimes an artist will produce a single specifically for the film in order to increase anticipation for the film, for example Adele produced ‘Skyfall’ for the Bond movie, she is evidently a popular artist and this will increase speculation regarding the film.

intertitles ď‚Ą Intertitles are a main convention in relation to trailers, whether he intertitle be specifically relevant to the plot, a certain character or perhaps the ratings given by the critics. This is because the idea of intertitles is to quickly grab the audiences attention, for example if a trailer quickly and boldly displays a five star rating for the film, the viewers will instantly be intrigued as it will supposedly be a successful film.
