Singularity University chapter masters degree final project Renewal industrial site for mixed use building ETSA Sevilla - 2016 Master of Architecture Placed atop the Guadalquivir river bank in downtown Sevilla, the old cigar factory closed in 2007. This proposal intends to repurpose it as the first European chapter of Singularity University, involving startup hubs, teaching facilities, temporary accommodation and common facilities and shared public spaces to link every activity in this center with the city of Seville. On the one hand, existing buildings have to undergo renewal works on existing facades and roofings to fulfill energy efficiency standards and allow the insertion of HVAC and mechanical systems according to new uses and function of spaces. Center spot is taken as an opportunity space for the project. Central buildings are demolished to build a space of meeting in the complex and so the complex can be a spot to join the street and the river banks. In order to set a meeting point in this reclaimed space, the project settles three layers of intervention. A public street can be found underground, in basemente level, providing access to every new spaces as well as the river bank and the existing buildings. On ground level a continuum of public space allows pedestrians to move freely between the street, the river bank and every building in the complex. All over ground floor buildings a great canopy is set up in order to control climate conditions in the ground level public space. Also, this canopy is meant to be represent the renewal in the complex and its urban surroundings.
6
INTERVENTION SPOT Center of the plot is recognised as most convenient for intervention.
CONNECTIVITY Intervention aims to build an easy walkable link between city and river and along this one.
CENTER AXIS The proposed core is meant to weave all spaces around a main underground street,

CONCEPT DRAWING - SECTION
The newly created buildings in the center space are filled with common facilities, sucha as a conference room, the complex administration offices, exhibition spaces and a public access canteen. The biggest existing building is filled with two widely different functions: on ground and first floors its old productive spirit is partially recovered by creating office spaces and tech labs, with a shared production facilities in the form of a fab-lab. The upper floor is set apart to hold accommodation facilities, with a series of single and double equiped rooms, with plenty of common spaces. The L-shaped building is devoted to education purposes, with a set of small seminar classrooms, a multimedia library and a couple of conference rooms for larger group lessons.

SECCIÓN 2 - AUDITORIO Y ESPACIOS ANEJOS 1:200 Canopyescala structure is conceived with a ten-meter-high truss to build the vertical perimeter, holding three pieces built with trusses arranged according to a Voronoi pattern. Over the vertical faces a system of vertical slats with different densities of perforation depending on its orientation in order to filter light to the spaces underneath. Roof parts are conceived as an open grid that allows light and rain in vertical, as well as providing a holder to textile pieces meant to be installed in sunniest seasons.
PPVA. AXONOMÉTRICA
The main truss has two cantilevers of 15m in length, found on both sides of the main span of over 70m long. The size of this allows to build this system on only four pillars. CARA SUPERIOR - perfiles CHS 90.7 6,65

ciudades interrumpidas destellos y aspiraciones Academic works - 2014 with Fernando Cruzado Prof. Dr. Carlos GarcĂa VĂĄzquez With the aim to record and study a discontinued urban development, we build our own mapping system, explaining the main issues recognised in recent town urban growth. The town of La Rinconada is the subject of this study; it is a satellite city to the city of Seville. During 20th century, it developed a second and separate urban core, attached to the newly built railways. This new part of the town held the railway station and new factories, dragging new dwellers to its surrondings. Early 21st century plans were born intended to bring back together the two-headed town of La Rinconada. This latest development was left unfinished from 2008, due to Spain financial crisis, leaving some traces of new urban plans. Following the initial mapping we carry out a breakdown of the site, in three different actions:
12
mapping Mapping developed to show the aims of urban plans for the gap between La Rinconada and San JosĂŠ de la Rinconada. The eastern and original neighbourhood hosts city council and public services, while newest and westernmost part hosts most of work places and dwellings for younger families in town. This newer part is also linked with its surroundings with a train station. Urban plans were written by city council according to their purpose to unify the town in one and only urban nucleus, evening workplaces, services and dwellers all across its extension.

1st intervention: an inventory Being told that nothing could be found on site, we tried to identify the elements that gave shape to this place. Even no singular buildings, spaces or objects are to be found here, we shaped an identity through a detailed inventory of this ordinary entities that filled every corner we looked at. This inventory was shaped following the example of Ed Ruscha with his various inventories all along Los Angeles urban area, with the same aim to portray the identity of the place through its daily-use spots and buildings.
Top to bottom: “Thirty six detours”, “Six empty dumpsters” and “Several forgotten supplies” 14
gabrielrc.com
15
2nd intervention: an identity Lacking any singular place, the unfinished roads of Pago de Enmedio have no names to identify roads and places. We design a blank “official street sign to give names to the places we choose as significant in the empty neighborhood. As we find no buildings to fix it, we set it up onto the elements we are able to find: mostly people and trees. To give a sense of a consolidated part of the city we gather these new names in a tourist map, as those of most visited cities. These new street names come from different situations and elements that are found during our on site research.

3rd intervention: forgotten According to the mentioned inventory, we aimed to brign the place back to life - or at least give it a second chance. Found building materials were taking account of in the third of the inventory booklets. They were packed up in pallets, a standard measuring unit made up to be sold and shipped around the world. According to this trading nature, we documented and posted some of the packs in second hand websites to bring them back to the market. At the same time, getting them online was the best way to make visible, as long as in the 21st century everything that is offline doesn’t exist. Summing up, the way to bring them back to life was to get them back to the market and online at the same time. We got some contacts about the products for sale and all of them were repplied to make them know it was an academic research.

IT 120 hours competition 2016 Team: Fernando Cruzado/Esther Rubio Taking the task to its furthest conception, our proposal looks for the purest forms that will cast the essence of the intended house. Since Roman Pantheon, through Renaissance Italian domes to BoullÊe layouts, sphere has been questing architects. Nowadays, its construction is still a challenge but its spatial quality stimulates its spread all over the World. Spherical space blurs boundaries between floors, walls and ceilings. The sphere mimics the shape of the sky above head, the cover of once inhabited caves, bubbles and drops, basic forms of nature. The unit grows around an inner spherical space, one and only, where life takes place. A second and outer sphere ties some inbetween spaces, support of daily activities. Having no site conditions, indoor spaces are shaped considering only its own aims and aspirations. Anywhere it’s set up, the unit will be lived and recognised as a whole and separate entity.

Pilgrim services building ETSA A Coruña - 2012 Prof. J.L. Martínez Raído Multifunctional building for pilgrims Placed on the Camino de Santiago route, is aimed for pilgrims spending the night at the city of Lugo. Meant to take shelter for a night in sleeping bags or host the activities of larger hikkers groups. The plot resembles of the site of ancient inns, in the oldest crossing point over the Miño river, as it flows close to the city. The building is conceived as a dissolution of the massive row of houses going down the slope from the city to the river, making it turn as it sets up the border of the river walking paths. Five volumes working in a row: first one, closely related to the existent housing, as a reception and office, leading to the living spaces, with a common kitchen and dining hall as an end to the sequence.

APPEARANCE
Outer appearance is determined mainly by slate walls, a material used for centuries in the city and its region, locally quarried and built following traditional masonry techniques to conform a contemporary shape. Most of the openings are vertically-shaped as those on the surrounding buildings, according to masonry restrictions. Inner walls are structural concrete, holding laminated timber beams to conform the roof pitch. Roof finishing is intended to be zinc, to make it fit in the environment color palette of slate roofings. Pitched roofs are chosen to fit the ruling shapes, adapted to generous rainfall in the region.

DOWNTOWN SEVILLA
ETSA Sevilla - 2013 Prof. Dr. Amadeo Ramos Carranza collaboration with Pablo Pita Castro Proposed as part of a bigger scheme to renovate and bring back to use Sevilla shipyards, involving the renovation of two industrial buildings to set up a cultural centre and a technological research hub. To weave the complex, a temporary housing for researchers and a pier to join it to the city will be added ex nihilo. The building is intended to direct and organize passengers of ferries heading to and coming from the city center of Seville. With this in mind, the scheme includes ticket offices, a canteen, public toilets and the needed floating dock, all surrounded by interface spaces providers of shade for the travelers. To hold this scheme, we propose a system on a hexagon grid that enables different growths and varying pieces according to the hosted function. All of this is meant to be prefabricated and dry construction systems. Mechanical systems and HVAC are hosted under a technical flooring.

tech hub at shipyard ETSA Sevilla - 2014 Prof. Dr. Amadeo Ramos Carranza As a part of the program to bring back to use the off duty shipyards, the electrical works factory is intended to become a tech hub. This high tech production center will give a place for tech based startups to develop their products as well as run small production runs. Every startup project will get their own office, placed on north and south sides of the building, linked to shared administration, meeting rooms and exhibition spaces to show their developing products. The main power of this hub lays in the core of the building. In the upper floor, different machinery and allows project teams to develop their products with last technology in materials. All of this is assisted by a logistics center hosted in the ground floor, where raw materials can be stocked and finished products can be found for handling and shipping. This program division is made by the insertion of a ribbon that flows all around the building separating production, circulation and office spaces. As opposed to the existing brickworks and concrete structure, this new element is conceived from a contemporary techinique, being a steel structure with creased aluminium sheet as the main finish.

fetsac 12: this is tomorrow organizing committee at A Coruña architecture school (ETSAC) cultural week. fetsac stands in Spanish for “A Coruña Higher School of Architecture festival”. It takes place yearly, lasting for a week and bringing to the School activities that will never fit in academic programs but are found to be really useful in an architect’s education. Since 2009 it has been funded and organized exclusively by students, turning into a place for student expression and a platform to bring to school the vanguard of architectural thinking. In 2012 edition, we tried to have a glimpse of some new ways of making things with the common base of the architectural education of its developers, with a wide range of products from coastal urban planning, to cinema, going through architectural publications and advertising design.

fetsac 14 organizing committee at A Coruña architecture school (ETSAC) cultural week. In year 2014, sixth edition of fetsac develops on two separate topics. On the one hand, public participation on city development and urban planning, with examples as Matthias Lecoq, Domenico di Siena (urbanohumano) and Todo por la Praxis TxP. On the other hand, treated as an in-house (school) problem, the topic of opportunities for new young architects was held through debates and “pecha kucha formats”.
