he Forest Plantation The current global scenario emphasizes a change in the production paradigm, in which besides the economic aspects, the social and environmental aspects of the forest plantations must be considered, seeking sustainable development. Planted forests, as a renewable resource, play an important role not only because of their productive function but also because of the provision of environmental services. They prevent deforestation of natural habitats, protect biodiversity, preserve soil and river springs, recover degraded areas and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, forestry generates employment and income throughout its productive chain and allows the participation of small and medium-sized rural producers, valuing sustainable regional development.
Rio Grande do Sul has a history of more than a century related to planted forests, when the first plantations of acacia established for industrial purposes. At the beginning of the 21st century, forestry production in the international context turned to southern Latin America, to countries such as Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil, especially to the southern half of Rio Grande do Sul, thanks to favorable climate conditions and advanced technology developed in Brazil. All of these factors made the state of Rio Grande do Sul the most promising pole in the southern hemisphere for the forestry industry.

Grande do Sul to produce tannin from bark, used in tanneries and power generation, originated from firewood burning, which has a high calorific value due to its high density. Throughout the years, with the use of the wood for several other purposes, as timbering for civil construction and for cellulose, the cultures were expanded, installing a wide productive chain.
mearnsii is a forest activity that preserves the soil from erosion, because it is a tree crop, with cycle between 6 and 7 years, which enriches the soil with nitrogen due to the legume / rhizobium symbiosis, being even widely used in the recovery of degraded areas

he cultivation of acacia
The purpose of the Acacia plantations is to produce two distinct products: the bark - for the extraction of tannins used in the tanning of leather and other chemical uses - and wood - usually used in the form of chips for the pulp industry or for the generation of energy, as explainedbelow:
Barkless wood: used for pulp production for cellulose, reconstituted panels and for power generation;

The Acacia Mearnsii purpose Acacia's production and market are concentrated on the following products:
Shell: used for the extraction of tannin, which is used in leather tanning and various chemical applications, such as Flocculants for treatment of effluents, for water purification and for clarification of sugar, adhesives and as an organic antioxidant for several other applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries;
Firewood: fuel widely used in the agribusiness for the drying of grains, in addition to ceramic, tobacco and various industrial segments.
Besides
being used as raw material in manufacturing products, firewood has an important role in the Brazilian energy matrix. In Brazil, wood for energy purpose, accounts for 20% of the, while in Rio Grande do Sul this proportion reaches 31%.
