RESONANCE

TO MOM AND DAD,

Thank you for inspiring, guiding, supporting me, and for your help in making the right choices. I love you.

I can hear you and I can watch your mouth move, and then I put together the sounds and the visual images. I can understand the words as I integrate the two signals. — MARLEE MATLIN

My condition is called Auditory Processing Disorder. It happened to me after illness in a very young age. It means that I can hear sounds, but my brain is not able to process them into anything meaningful. So in a way, I am deaf that can actually hear.

WHAT’S THAT NOISE?

resonance | ‘rez n ns | e e

Physics: the reinforcement or prolongation of sound by reflection from a surface or by the synchronous vibration of a neighboring object

Naturally, most people interpret sounds into easily understood information. Spoken words or music influence their perception of the world around them, and the way they express themselves. For me, sounds do not have much meaning. I can only hear noise that is reflected or reverberated. So, sounds for me are combined into resonance. This portfolio reflects the way I understand the outside world, and demonstrates how the lack of sounds sharpens my strong visual acuity.

TITLE It’s Not Your Fault PROJECT A Gus Van Sant Film Festival COURSE Integrated Communications INSTRUCTOR Hunter Wimmer SEMESTER Spring 2014 TYPEFACE Adobe Caslon Univers

OBJECTIVE Promote a film festival dedicated to a single film director. Conceptualize and design a number of deliverables to exhibit at the film festival. Choose a director whose series of motion pictures follow the same theme, or a thread, and use design tools that take this thread into consideration. SOLUTION I chose the film director Gus Van Sant. I have paid close attention to his filmmaking over the years. I have always appreciated his style and immense talent. The film festival title (It’s Not Your Fault) is inspired by a phrase used in one of Van Sant’s feature films, Good Will Hunting. Many of Van Sant’s feature films tell the stories of confused, struggling young adults who discover a bond with someone who helps them to break with their past and find a way out. This is the thread that I followed in development of my concept.

TITLE Bally PROJECT Bally Total Fitness Rebrand COURSE Nature of Identity INSTRUCTOR Hunter Wimmer SEMESTER Fall 2014 TYPEFACE  Idlewild Tungsten Vitesse

OBJECTIVE Research a list of companies that are either going out of business, dead, or defunct. Choose one from the list, and rebrand it in an effort to bring it back to life considering changes in a modern life. Develop a new logo and identity system. Design a series of products and services that promote the brand. SOLUTION The company I chose is Bally Total Fitness. My idea is to rebrand “Bally” from a chain of traditional fitness clubs into a company, which would focus on preparing people for the “unknowns” of the modern world they live in. This would be achieved through the development of a series of new services based on training of the body, the core, and the mind. I developed a relevant visual system that reflects the new and dynamic attributes of the company’s re-invented identity.

TITLE Consistently on Time PROJECT Type Classification Poster Series COURSE Type Forms INSTRUCTOR David Hake SEMESTER Fall 2011 TYPEFACE Bodoni Centaur Rockwell

OBJECTIVE Design and create a poster that displays a clear understanding of how typography is classified, described, selected, and applied. SOLUTION I created three typographical posters. Each poster represents a separate typeface — Bodoni, Centaur, and Rockwell. The design is based on a metro subway map that visualizes the rhythmic sound of moving trains. This concept helps to understand and follow six different typeface classifications in a simple and efficient way.

OBJECTIVE Design the SFO Environmental Sustainability Report for 2012. Use innovative approach in displaying the contents in a logical, relevant, and easily understood visual system. SOLUTION An annual report is a document that is difficult to read, because it contains a lot of data that is hard to connect. Airports are places of movement, where new journeys begin and conclude. My approach to this design solution is to form a pleasing flow from one page to another using the “loop” concept. As a result, the presentation of the information becomes more logical and consistent.

TITLE This Is The Only Ending PROJECT Music Interpretation COURSE Type Experiments INSTRUCTOR Stan Zienka SEMESTER Spring 2013 TYPEFACE Transit

OBJECTIVE Design a poster based on my own interpretation of a certain music theme. SOLUTION I chose “This Is The Only Ending” by Paper Plane Pilot. Deeply moved by this theme, I developed a poster that reflects the mood of a lonely person walking down the dark street in the cold rain surrounded by representations of the loud street noise. In the process of working on this poster, I experimented with typography to create a perfect blend between all the elements of the design.

OBJECTIVE Design an innovative and functional package that contains 36 color pencils. This package represents a private label product called Spectrum. Develop unique visual identity for the package. SOLUTION My package design is based on the structure of a prism. A prism can display the brightly colored spectrum as light passes through it and is then refracted. This is similar in concept to the visual representation of an echo as sound bounces off of a surface. I used the three-sided structure of the prism for the functionality of dividing the pencils into three groups of twelve. In addition, my goal was to make the package attractive to teenagers, providing instructions on how to use color pencils to achieve the best results.

OBJECTIVE Select a company that has its own store. Design an in-store package that is functional not only for the product it contains, but which can be re-used for other needs. SOLUTION I designed a functional and sustainable package for Oakley, the company that manufactures sports performance equipment and lifestyle products. This package can be used for packaging everything Oakley sells, from clothes to sunglasses. It can be used as a case or a bag for many other items as well. I designed the package using attractive and reverberating colors, with the Oakley logo represented as a main design theme. OBJECTIVE Research the challenges in communication between people who speak different languages. Develop a simple visual solution that will help seasoned travelers to express themselves and understand others anywhere in the world. SOLUTION Combining my personal experience in overcoming frustrations in communication with my knowledge of American Sign Language, I created a system of simple gestures graphically represented in various forms and materials. These gestures can be used in silence, without the need of spoken language.
