4 Dear Reader Tomorrow is going to be a good day for me as I am driving to Aberystwyth to collect my eldest son from University. He has finished his first year, and after his last exam on Tuesday has spent a fair amount of time partying. When I was younger, a night out was pub, club, kebab and pass out! In Sam’s world it is go to the pub with his mates, stay up all night then a competition to see who can last the longest in the kitchen (with only loo breaks allowed). I think it is a maximum of 36 hours before the winner then gets all his drinks paid for in the pub! Oh, to be young!
MY
I have a funny feeling he is not going to be feeling very well when we drive home. On his return, he will be working full time to recharge his university money. On that note, I was inspired by the news that the owners of the new Bargain Booze and Subway Restaurant in Castle View have announced that they have created twenty employment opportunities in the local area - nice bunch of people they are too. As well as the creation of the positions, it is nice to see both businesses are thriving. If you are a local employer, I will be able to offer you the chance to place classified recruitment ads in this magazine, free of charge. Several business owners have successfully recruited staff through this magazine in the past and I want to do my bit to help utilise local talent.

National Memorial CD Launch
A fundraising CD entitled ‘A Miner’s Song’ has been released in aid of the Welsh National Mining Memorial to be sited at Senghenydd to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Britain’s worst mining disaster (in which 440 lives were lost). The CD produced by Daniel and Laura Curtis from the Aber Valley Heritage Group was recently launched at the Millennium Stadium prior to the England versus Wales Six Nations Rugby match. ‘A Miner’s Song’ was composed by Dan and Laura and includes the voices of some well known Welsh celebrities, some of whom recorded their lines from as far away as Los Angeles. Those taking part include Aled Jones, Ioan Gruffudd, Jonathan Pryce, Paul Potts, Michael Sheen, Joe Calzaghe and Wynne Evans (Mr ‘Go Compare’). In addition children from 4 local schools also took part in recording the song back in December. Other contributors are the Aber Valley Male Voice Choir, BTM Brass Band, Gentleman Songsters and the Richard Williams Singers.
Mobile & Clinic Podiatry Tracy Gill MSc HPC Reg
The song is being supported by BBC Radio Wales, particularly through our patron, Roy Noble’s Radio Show. Roy said “The planned National Memorial will ever remind generations to come of our debt to all those who worked in coal and its true cost in lives – Senghenydd, in its huge tragedy, being the stalwart symbol”. Copies of the CD, which also includes 5 additional bonus tracks (including the song ‘Senghenydd’ sang by the Aber Valley Male Voice Choir), is available to purchase from the Heritage Museum at Senghenydd or via the website: www.nationalminingmemorial.co.uk costing £5.99. It is also available for download via itunes. “I want to lend my support to this incredibly worthy cause that is part of our history and our heritage. I hope everyone will give it the boost it deserves.” Michael Sheen, OBE. For more information call (02920) 830444/5 or email senghen.heritage@btconnect.com www.abervalleyheritage.co.uk

Recipe
Falafel, Pepper & Goats’ Cheese Salad Serves 4
Ready in 30 minutes If you’re having veggie friends around for lunch or just fancy a meat-free supper for a change this colourful salad will fit the bill. Falafels are small Middle Eastern deep-fried patties made with cooked chick peas. You can buy them ready-made in most supermarkets or deli’s but they are really easy to make at home with just a can of chick peas and a few store cupboard ingredients. For an on-the-go salad pack into warmed pitta breads.
Ingredients:
• 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped • 4 tbsp freshly chopped parsley or coriander • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander • 1 tsp chilli powder • 2 tbsp plain flour • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Oil for shallow frying • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced • 2 tbsp olive oil • 150g bag mixed salad leaves • Half a small iceberg lettuce, roughly shredded • 150g goats’ cheese, roughly crumbled
For the Dressing: • 6 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar • tsp Dijon mustard
To make the falafel, place the chick peas, garlic, parsley or coriander, spices and flour in a food processor and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Process for about 1 minute until you have a fairly smooth mixture. Turn into a bowl then divide and shape the mixture into 12 small patties with clean wetted hands. Shallow fry the patties in hot oil for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Meanwhile, place the sliced peppers on a foil-lined grill pan and drizzle over the olive oil. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side until tender and lightly charred in places. Toss together the salad leaves and shredded iceberg lettuce. Arrange on four plates with the grilled peppers. Halve the hot falafel then add to the salad and top with roughly crumbled goats’ cheese. To make the dressing, place all the ingredients in a screw-topped jar and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and serve immediately.
Tip Add a handful of fruity black or green olives to the salad or sprinkle with some lightly toasted pine nuts to give an extra Mediterranean flavour.

Health Feature
Keeping Gum Disease Away By Julia Faulks How often have you seen blood in the basin when brushing your teeth and done nothing about it? Unfortunately, this is just one of the signs of gum disease, which has been linked to heart and lung disease, diabetes, strokes and premature births. Gum disease, also known as gingivitis, is where the gums become swollen, sore or infected. It can cause bad breath, bleeding gums, abscesses, loose teeth, receding gums and cavities. With around half of the population having some degree of gum disease, the risk of further health complications makes for scary reading. But the good news is that there is plenty you can do to improve things. Bad bacteria The disease is caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth, which contain hundreds of bacteria that can be harmful to your gums. If you don’t brush your teeth properly or have them regularly cleaned by a professional, this plaque can build up and irritate your gums. Surprisingly, even if you aren’t experiencing any pain you might still be suffering from gum disease. In severe cases, a condition called periodontitis can develop - this affects the tissues that support your
teeth and hold them in place, meaning that you may even lose teeth. There are cases where you may be more likely to get gum disease – and not just because you aren’t brushing your teeth well. For example, if you: • are over the age of 35 • are a smoker • have a condition that makes it harder for your body to fight infection • have a high level of stress • are taking certain forms of medication linked with gum disease, including tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, antimuscarinic drugs, some antiepileptic drugs, some antipsychotics, betablockers, diuretics (water tablets) • have a poor diet • are pregnant Dental check-ups With many of us neglecting our visits to the dentist and a recent survey revealing that men are the worst culprits when it comes to regular dental check ups, you may be completely unaware of the existence of a problem other than perhaps seeing blood in the sink when brushing your teeth. Don’t wait for your gums to become painful, inflamed or bleed before you visit your dentist – mild cases can
be easily treated or even reversed. However, in cases of severe gum disease, you may need further treatment carried out by a specialist. There’s no shame in asking your hygienist to show you how to clean your teeth properly or the best way to floss – years of bad habits can be hard to change, but even changing your toothbrush every three months can help. Top tips • Brush your teeth for at least two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste after every meal (leave 30 minutes after eating so your mouth acids have time to reduce). • Floss regularly and use interdental brushes to reach the parts of your teeth that normal brushing can miss. • Visit your dentist regularly, as well as a hygienist, who will not only clean your teeth but check your mouth generally for the signs of problems. • Speak to your pharmacist or dentist about additional treatments, such as an anti bacterial mouthwash, which can help control gum disease and keep your mouth in mint condition. • Cut down on sugary food and drinks and quit smoking – these things alone are two of the worst culprits when it comes to causing gum disease.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Phil Powell feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Caerphilly & the surrounding area and Phil is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery
Wonderful Wisteria I have started dabbling with my own video channel on youtube (search for Rogthegardener1 on youtube and let me know what you think!). It has been a learning curve for me – and I have been amazed that nice people from all over the world have started contacting me and asking me questions as a result of watching my videos – what a funny, and increasingly ‘smaller’ world we live in! My most popular video is all about Wisteria – one of the most spectacular climbers to grow in British gardens. This year they are late flowering because of the cold start to spring, so you should be able to see their cascading chains of mauve / purple flowers during early June. Take a look at the photo – now wouldn’t you like a bit of that in your garden? You can let Wisterias trail over pergolas, or walls with a little support; or if you are really clever, and can do a bit of canny pruning, you can train them into free standing trees.
They have the look of something oriental about them, so look really good next to a pond, hanging over a rockery or near a gravel area. They can take a few years to get going with their flowers – make sure you ask for a grafted Wisteria if you are going to buy one, as they will start flowering sooner. There is a special way to prune them, but it’s easy once you know how, and as luck would have it that nice man rogthegardener has a short video on his youtube channel which shows you how to do it. Our Wisteria started flowering about 5 years ago with just a few flowers; and this year I can see hundreds of lovely flower-buds starting to unfold ready to put on their show in a week or so … and I for one am counting the days…. Join the fun at Race for Life
Ruth Cochran from Caerphilly, Wales is making a stand against cancer by entering Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in celebration of her mum who has beat bowel cancer, and she wants every women across Wales to join her. In 2006 Ruth originally started taking part at Race for Life as she had lost so many family members to cancer.
for life-saving research into 200 types of cancer – helping men, women and children across Wales survive.
The shocking news was then revealed that her mum, Audrey Jones, had bowel cancer and was told that survival rates were very slim. However in 2008 Ruth and Audrey walked the Cardiff Race for Life together and her mum is now three years on from cancer treatment.
Ruth is urging the women of Wales to join her in the fight against all cancers by entering their closest Race for Life event as soon as possible
Ruth recalls: “When mum became ill I practically stopped all my training due to appointments but thanks to Cancer Research UK’s life saving research and the wonderful support from our local hospital, she is here today, and my training is in full flow.” Sadly Ruth has just recently lost her Aunt to cancer and once again the realisation that there is more to be done has hit home. Ruth will be participating in the Cardiff Race for Life 5k and 10k course this year and along with the other thousands of ladies taking part says: “Look out cancer, we’re coming to get you.”
She says: “Thanks to research, my mum is still here. I am so grateful for the treatment that saved her life. Success stories like hers would not be possible without the work of Cancer Research UK, which in turn relies on everyone who raises money through Race for Life.” Thanks to the support of local people, Cancer Research UK is able to spend more than £4m on its pioneering work in Wales. To enter Race for Life today go to www. raceforlife.org or call 0845 600 6050.
Race for Life is an amazing women-only, non-competitive series of events. It raises millions of pounds every year

Caerphilly Miners Centre Campaign
On 29th June Caerphilly Miners Centre for the Community launches the ‘8’ Campaign. ‘8’ reflects the donations made by the miners in the establishment of the hospital in 1923. Miners put aside 6 pence (6d) of their 12s 6d (12 shillings, 6 pence) weekly wages. Today this equates to about £8.00! We are already well underway with fundraising, having obtained nearly a 3rd of our £1M target and the ‘8’ campaign will raise awareness of the project and help us get to the magic £1M needed to refurbish the Beeches building. ‘8’ looks to gain donations from the community and local businesses.

The inaugural Caerphilly 10k, taking place on Sunday 23rd June, has already attracted over 900 participants and the numbers are rising on a daily basis. Our target is 1,000 and we are appealing to runners from across the UK to help us meet this. Come on Caerphilly runners support a local event!

Entrants are being encouraged to bring along the whole family to support them from the grassed area near the start/finish line on Crescent Road. The family can then enjoy the various activities on offer from our Sports Development Team including Hoola Hooping and Street Rugby. For further information on the event call the event hotline on 02920 880011 or to sign up visit the website http://your.caerphilly.gov.uk/10k
Hot on the heels of the Caerphilly 10k is the Blackwood Summer Festival, which sees the High Street being transformed into a beach party for the weekend! On 29th & 30th June a giant beach will appear before your eyes as well as Punch and Judy shows, donkey rides, limbo dancing and hot donuts; you may even see a stilt walking mermaid pass you by as you relax on the deckchairs, while the children play in the sand with the buckets and spades!! This event always proves popular with families, and will once again be supported by an abundance of funfair rides and stalls and lots more entertainment for everyone to enjoy. I must not forget to mention the children’s favourite street characters which come along each year and prove extremely popular; this year they include new editions Mike The Knight and Everything Rosie, as well as the old favourites Mickey and Peppa Pig.
This year’s theme is children’s story time, so we expect to see lots of colourful and beautifully decorated wheelbarrows outside the centre over the weekend. Email events@caerphilly.gov.uk for an application form and visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk/ flowerfestival for more information on this event. Hope this is enough to keep you entertained over the coming weeks and I will look forward to our catch up in July’s edition.

Thought for the Month
It’s not fair! There were times, I confess, when mini-me about 40 years ago tried the “It’s not fair” line on my parents; it never seemed to work in quite the way I had hoped.
ZAC ZAC
On one occasion, when I was about 10 years old, I was so outraged by my Mums unreasonable request for me to clean out my hamsters’ cage – that decided to leave home (it was after-all during the school holidays, what sort of Mum would ask her wonderful son to do THAT during his holidays!!). I decided to return home that evening (around tea time by coincidence) to what I thought would be a warm hearted ‘welcome home son’ feast – but alas, it was more of a ‘where have you been all day – now go and clean the Hamsters cage’ sort of welcome!
No, but … How about if you could speak to, listen to, and get to know personally someone who had experienced terrible injustice at the hands of corrupt men?
DECORATING DECORATING
How about if that person had lived a perfect life – doing good to all he met, showing compassion, patience and ‘tough love’ (not unlike my Mum!) even to his friends who let him down and left him to die the cruellest death the Romans could think of …that person would know all about ‘it’s not fair’ – He’s been there done that.

Officers are cracking down on prolific offenders in the Caerphilly area as part of a new operation. A team of officers, consisting of one Detective Constable and six Police Constables, will be focussing on targeting those criminals that hurt local communities the most. During a similar operation that ran in February and March this year – Operation Crystal – 36 people were arrested for a variety of offences including burglary, affray, arson and shoplifting. A number of these have received custodial sentences, with one man receiving ten months in prison for burglary. Officers also executed six search warrants under the Theft and Misuse of Drugs Act and arrested individuals for drugs offences. They also made regular visits to known prolific offenders and worked to encourage crime prevention tactics, such as the use of forensic marking products by local businesses that had been victims of crime. Capture vehicles were also used throughout the area. Detective Nic Wilkie, who is leading the team, is hoping to see similar successes with this latest drive against crime. He said: “The new crime team that has been set up in Caerphilly will also be working with partner agencies to concentrate on dealing with repeat offenders in the area. This includes working with Wales
Probation, Gwent Drug Intervention Programme, the Youth Offending Service and Caerphilly County Borough Council. Through information sharing and partnership working, we are able to deal quickly and more efficiently with offenders. “As a reminder to residents, I would also like to encourage you not to be complacent or take chances with their security. Even when you are inside your own home, you should lock your door and take the key out of lock. It is also particularly important to keep any valuables hidden out of sight when you leave your home or car. “My advice is to always lock your home, car and garden sheds to avoid the inconvenience and distress associated with being a victim of crime. We also want to remind residents to report anything suspicious, no matter how small, to Gwent Police.” Anyone with information that may help any of our investigations should call Gwent Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
