FARM BUREAU’S
Zippy Duvall, President
Consumers deserve the truth
I know summer doesn’t officially arrive until June 21, but like most of us, I consider Memorial Day weekend the beginning of summer. I’ve already been enjoying Georgia’s famous Vidalia Onions and blueberries and can’t wait until the Georgia peaches and watermelons start ripening. If you love fresh produce, be sure to visit one of the many Georgia Farm Bureau Certified Farm Markets across the state where you can buy produce straight from the farmers who grow it. You’ll find a complete list of the markets beginning on page 37. No matter where you live in Georgia, one of our markets is within driving distance of you. Visiting one of our markets is a great way to create a memory with your kids and teach them that farmers grow their food – that it doesn’t just magically appear on the grocery store shelf. With farmers making up less than two percent of America’s population, Georgia Farm Bureau realizes there is a growing disconnect between those of us who grow crops and raise livestock to feed America and the consumers who buy the food we grow. That’s why we formed the GFB Foundation for Agriculture late last year. For years, GFB has used our Ag in the Classroom program to help our county volunteers go into local schools and teach students how farmers grow food and protect the environment by taking care of the soil, water and wildlife on their farms. GFB has formed this non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation to receive tax-deductible donations so we can ramp up our Ag in the Classroom programs, scholarships, educational outreach and leadership development programs to tell the story of agriculture. You can learn more about the foundation and how you can make a donation on page 24. A prime example of the need for the agricultural literacy work the GFB Foundation 2
for Agriculture will fund is the report the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee issued in February. Since 1980, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) have issued Dietary Guidelines for Americans every five years. These guidelines influence federal nutrition policy, education, outreach and food assistance programs used by consumers, industry, nutrition educators and health professionals. Given the important role Georgia farmers play in producing America’s food supply, GFB closely follows the process of updating the federal dietary guidelines. Although the development of the new guidelines is still in its early stages, we have serious concerns about the initial report the committee released because it suggests the committee will base dietary guidelines on more than health and nutrition considerations and will consider the sustainability of food production. The sustainability section in the report is based on the 2006 report “Livestock’s Long Shadow,” released by the U.N. Food & Agriculture Organization. Despite the serious and well-documented flaws of this report, it has been the basis for numerous attacks against livestock and dairy production. Past dietary guidelines have included a positive reference to lean meat as part of a healthy diet. The initial report does not. The advisory committee appears to have taken a negative view of livestock products based on the perceived negative impact their production has on the environment. GFB recognizes the importance of sustainable agriculture. The majority of Georgia farmers are following production practices that protect the soil and water resources on their farms. We have to protect our natural resources to keep our livestock and our families healthy and so we can pass our farms down to the next generation. Based on the widely recognized role See WE, THE FARMERS page 32

already seen a vet who has worked the case up and are to the point where they say, ‘I can’t figure this out, or your animal needs more specialized care.’ ” In addition to providing animal care that many vet clinics can’t offer, the UGA teaching hospital provides training for veterinary students, postdoctoral training of interns and residents, and conducts clinical research with client consent. The UGA CVM Community Practice Clinic, which offers routine veterinary care, remains located off East Campus Road on the main UGA CVM campus.

ou don’t have to own an ark full of animals to appreciate the excellent care the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine (UGA CVM) provides through its Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Just ask any of the owners of the 24,516 animals the hospital treated inhouse last year or the owners of the 558,067 animals the hospital’s field service team treated along with 36.4 million poultry. The college’s stellar reputation is only bound to grow thanks to the new facility in East Athens the hospital relocated to on March 25 from the main UGA Campus. The hospital is part of the new 300,000 square-foot UGA Veterinary Medical Center at the end of College Station Road that includes clinical labs to support the hospital and a classroom building. The $97 million facility was funded with $65 million in state funds and $32 million in private donations from CVM alumni and supporters. Dr. Sheila Allen, UGA CVM dean, is grateful to state officials and individuals who supported improving the facilities for UGA’s vet school. “The return on this investment can be found when you crack an egg or pour a glass of milk for breakfast, when you watch birds flying through the sky, when you take a ride on your horse on a crisp fall morning, or when you come home after a stressful day to be greeted by your dog,” Allen said. The hospital’s emergency/critical service is open daily, 24 hours a day, seven days a week to treat large and small animals needing urgent or emergency care without referral from their veterinarian. Primary veterinarians, however, refer most of the animals that come to the teaching hospital. Field service veterinarians, along with veterinary students, help farmers throughout Georgia. “I think most of our owners feel very fortunate to have us here,” said Dr. Corey Saba, UGA CVM associate professor of oncology. “Most of the patients we see have
Recent UGA CVM grad Dr. Katie Malehorn and Dr. Corey Saba examine Ellick, who is participating in a clinical trial for dogs with lymphoma at the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Dr. Saba provides oncology care for small animals referred to the teaching hospital. She also oversees a clinical trial testing the safety and effectiveness of a new immunotherapeutic to prolong remission time in dogs with lymphoma. Mauricio Cano’s cocker spaniel, Ellick, was diagnosed with lymphoma in April 2014. After receiving chemotherapy at an
Atlanta clinic, Ellick’s vet referred the cocker for the clinical trial Saba is conducting. UGA is one of four institutions in the U.S. participating in the trial and currently has 17 dogs enrolled in the trial, Saba said. “These trials are so hard to get into and so rare that I jumped on the chance to bring him here,” Cano said. When Ellick began the trial, Cano drove his dog to Athens every 14 days from October through December, but since January has only had to come every six weeks for follow-up treatment. Although Cano doesn’t know if Ellick received the treatment or a placebo, he’s grateful he had a chance to prolong his dog’s life. “It was a huge gamble driving up here and letting Ellick get an unknown treatment, but to be able to contribute to the data and statistics of a study that could contribute to helping other dogs in the future will be worth it, even if his lymphoma comes back,” Cano said. Saba estimates that only five to ten percent of the hospital’s oncology patients are participating in a clinical trial. “It’s probably not as big as our general service component because not every owner will want to enroll their animal in a trial and not every animal will qualify for the trials that we have going on. Every trial has its own inclusion requirements,” Saba said. Thanks to the new building the teaching hospital relocated to, animals participating in the trials and the vets conducting them are enjoying first-class facilities. Saba, who has worked at the UGA CVM since 2006, says the windows, extra space and new equipment are the best features of the new facility. “The windows make it nice. I’ve found I’m more productive in this hospital than I used to be, and I credit that to the windows and the natural light.” Clinical trials for small animals being See HOSPITAL page 26 3
hese days it seems solar panels are showing up everywhere. Dream up a use for electricity, and solar panels can provide the juice. In agriculture, solar power is being used to power poultry houses, electric fences, peanut shelling plants … really, anything under the sun. Now, some Georgia farmers are taking solar beyond their own applications, using their land to produce solar power. Macon County Farm Bureau Director Donald Chase’s foray into solar power generation started with power poles and irrigation pumps. Chase had a 5-acre strip of land separated from most of his farm by a highway, and for years he had used it the same way he used the rest of his land – for growing corn and peanuts. That became a challenge a few years ago when Georgia Power installed a transmission line along the highway. The line is on large poles secured by guy wires, which extend to the middle of the field. Chase said this created a problem for him getting large farm equipment through the field while negotiating around the wires. “The guy wires made it almost impossible to farm,” said Chase, a third-generation farmer who grows corn and peanuts and operates 10 poultry houses as well as a roadside produce stand. On the back side of that field is a pond Chase uses to supply irrigation water. The pump for that water source requires about 160 kilowatts of electricity, and Chase wondered if he could use solar power to run the pump. 4
That turned out not to make economic sense, but in the course of researching it, Chase discovered Georgia Power’s Advanced Solar Initiative (ASI), an incentive program for installing solar farms in which the landowner and the company enter into a lease agreement for plots of land where solar panels are installed. Georgia Power purchases the power generated by ASI facilities. The plots of land had to be a minimum of five acres, big enough to accommodate enough solar panels to generate 1 megawatt of power. Chase entered five sites into the
Georgia Power lottery for acceptance into the ASI incentive plan, and two – including the one with the guy wire issue – were accepted. It was land that in terms of farm production was going unused. “Now we’re getting something out of it,” Chase said. After his two sites were chosen, Chase had to decide whether to construct his own solar-generating facility on the sites or lease that land to other parties who would take on the installation and maintenance of the See ELECTRICITY page 20

Henry West West, 87, grew up in Gordon County on a farm where his family grew a little bit of everything – cotton, corn for the hogs and cattle, and all of their own vegetables. “Back then you had to grow your food,” West said. He left Gordon County in 1948 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years in Japan before he was transferred to the Army Reserves for six years. When he came home he owned a grocery store for two and a half years before selling it to return to the farm. “The grocery business was good to me, but it had long hours and I got tired of it. It was hard to make money in the grocery business. I didn’t look back, and I’m still farming,” West said. West and his wife, Lois, who married in 1948, have three daughters – Rita Crook, Neva Adams, Nelda Heramb, and a son, Terry, and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He started growing broilers in 1954 and today the family farm that he runs with his son, Terry, has five chicken houses. They also

Born and raised in Bulloch County, Lee, 94, spent two years working at a steel plant in Toccoa, Ga., before being drafted into the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943. He served as a mechanic during World War II overhauling the motors of B-24 and B-17 planes in England and Germany before being discharged in May 1946 with the rank of sergeant. “I’m proud I was able to serve. I would do it again if I was called on,” Lee said. “It’s quite an experience, and I don’t think I’ll ever forget it either.” Lee joined Farm Bureau in 1947 after he returned home from the war and began farming with his brothers Gordon and B.C. For years the brothers grew corn, soybeans, peanuts, tobacco and raised cattle. After his brothers died, Lee continued to farm and still grows corn, soybeans, peanuts and sugar cane to make syrup that he sells in his community. GFB honors livestock show grand champions By Jay Stone ___________________________________

eorgia Farm Bureau (GFB) hosted a dinner on April 3 honoring the eight grand champion winners from the state 4-H & FFA Junior Market Goat and Lamb Shows held last fall and the Georgia Junior National Livestock Show held in February. GFB awarded $17,000 in prize checks and presented copies of Max Lucado’s book “One God, One Plan, One Life.” GFB President Zippy Duvall shared his thoughts on the grand champions, whom he encouraged to embrace their role as leaders and mentor their fellow competitors. “You’ve won a championship and that makes you a leader,” Duvall said. “Y’all have so many exciting days ahead of you, and you’ll have influence over those who look up to you and are following you.” GFB Young Farmer Committee Chairman David Cromley welcomed the eight grand champions, their families and guests to the GFB auditorium in Macon. More than 80 people attended the event. 8
Georgia Ag Education Program Manager Chip Bridges thanked GFB for its work to sustain youth programs like the livestock shows and discussed the importance of continuing student agricultural programs. Georgia 4-H Leader Arch Smith spoke on the importance of the students’ support teams, including parents, FFA advisors and 4-H agents. The students watched videos from the Georgia Farm Monitor’s coverage of the livestock shows and a video message from Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black. Smith and Bridges presented Duvall with a framed collection of photos of the grand champions with their animals. The collage will be hung in the GFB Room of Champions at the organization’s office in Macon. The grand champions are: Payton Jackson of Banks County, who won the $1,500 Grand Champion Market Doe prize at the 2014 state 4-H & FFA Junior Market Goat Show; Chase Roberts of Worth County, who won the $1,500 Grand Champion Market Wether award at the 2014 state 4-H
& FFA Junior Market Goat Show; Ansley Ruff of Elbert County who won the $1,000 Grand Champion Market Lamb prize at the 2014 state 4-H & FFA Junior Market Lamb Show, and the $1,000 Grand Champion Breeding Ewe award at the 2015 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show; Jacob Collins of Houston County, who won the $2,500 Grand Champion Breeding Heifer prize at the 2015 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show; Maddie Dean of Crisp County, who won the $5,000 Grand Champion Market Steer prize at the 2015 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show; Monica Schaapman of Wilcox County, who won the $1,500 Grand Champion Commercial Dairy Heifer award at the 2015 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show; Gavin Wright of Houston County, who won the $1,500 Grand Champion Market Barrow prize at the 2015 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show and Jessie Youngblood of Coffee County, who won the $1,500 Grand Champion Market Gilt award at the 2015 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show. Ensure your landscape survives the summer Water your lawn correctly
Watering a lawn is a no-brainer, right? You just haul out the sprinkler, let it run for an hour, then stow it in your garage until next week. If you have an irrigation system you turn on the master valve and let it run on the schedule the installer set a few years ago. Simple stuff! But if you use either of these two methods, your lawn is probably not getting the right amount of moisture it needs. Using these methods will probably result in your lawn being too dry or too wet, but not likely the “just right” amount you intended. When learning to water a lawn correctly, it’s important to think about how turf grasses were developed. It wasn’t in a swamp and it wasn’t in a desert. For the most part, grasses developed their unique form and habit in wide-open prairies where rain was not plentiful. To compensate, grasses developed a fibrous root system that could absorb water quickly and then store the water until the next rainfall. If you water your lawn so the soil stays
soggy for a few days in a row, the roots begin to rot and the leaves succumb to disease. If you don’t water during a drought, the roots shrink and the plant goes dormant. Your goal, then, is to water your lawn enough to wet the entire root system and then allow it to dry out before the next watering. In most cases, lawns need an inch of water applied once a week. So how do you know when an inch of water has been supplied? All you need is six identical cups and an hour of time. 1. Place the cups randomly in the area your sprinkler wets. 2. Let your sprinkler run for an hour. 3. Measure the depth of water that has accumulated in each cup. 4. Calculate the average of the depths. This gives you the amount (in inches) that has been applied in an hour. 5. Make a mental calculation of how long it will take to apply a full inch of water. 6. Don’t be surprised if your mathematics reveal that your sprinkler must run for more than an hour to apply the water your lawn needs! Remember, lawn grass does not like to grow in soggy soil. For best growth, the soil should dry out a bit between watering. Use your judgment, but in a typical summer a lawn should be watered deeply only once per week.

Watering New Trees & Shrubs
Most lawns should receive one inch of water a week in the summer. Place cups like this on your lawn to measure how much water your sprinkler system disperses in an hour to determine how long you need to water your yard.
10
Even though fall is the best time to plant a tree or shrub, when you see shiny green leaves and blooms in spring, it’s mighty tempting to plant them then. The problem with planting in spring is that the trees and shrubs have precious few weeks to grow roots before the heat of summer arrives. With heat comes the need for moisture. If the shrub or tree still has an undeveloped root system, drought damage and even death can quickly ensue. If you did plant a tree or shrub this spring, here are some watering suggestions: 1. Give a shrub two gallons of water for

every gallon of plant size once per week. Example: a camellia that came in a three gallon pot needs six gallons of water each week. Apply the water at the base of the plant, where the root system is dense. DO NOT rely on a lawn irrigation system to water new shrubs. Hand watering is best. 2. Give new trees (especially evergreens like Leyland cypress and holly) five gallons of water for every inch of trunk diameter measured a foot from the ground. Example: A new maple with a trunk thickness of two inches needs ten gallons of water per week. How long is this close attention to watering necessary? It depends on our summer weather, but typically you need to do it for six months after planting. If you allow the root system to dry out even once, you can lose your plant and all the money you spent for it. Ask a neighbor for help if you take a long beach vacation!
Mulch
The best way to avoid wide swings in soil moisture is to spread a mulch of pine straw or wood chips under your plant. A layer 2” 3” deep is fine. The soil is kept cooler, weeds are kept at bay and if you forget to water one week the mulch makes it less likely the plant will be harmed. Georgia Neighbors • Spring 2015

As a matter of Ag Fact...
Agriculture is our nation’s and Georgia’s largest industry. It contributes more than $71.1 billion annually to Georgia’s $763.65 billion economic output. One in seven Georgians works in agriculture, forestry or agriculture-related fields. Almost half of the state’s manufacturing jobs are in agribusiness. Want to know a few more ag facts? Match the words with the clues below and then find them on the Word Search. 1. This is Georgia’s state insect. 2. This is Georgia’s official state vegetable. 3. Franciscan monks introduced this fruit to St. Simon’s and Cumberland Islands on Georgia’s coast in 1571. It is also the official state fruit of Georgia. 4. This is Georgia’s official state crop. 5. More than half of all the peanuts in the U.S. are ground into this product. 6. This type of land provides food and habitat for 75% of the na A G T R

tion’s wildlife. 7. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson planted these trees in the 1700’s. They are native to North America, and Georgia ranks first in the nation in its production. 8. This is the only food that does not spoil. 9. In a lifetime, the average American will consume enough of these to fill 16 pickup trucks. 10. The first agricultural experimental farm and station were established in this Georgia city in 1735.

The first “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” was published in 1980 to provide science-based advice to Americans for a healthy, nutritious diet that would promote health and reduce disease with regular exercise. Since 1985, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC), appointed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), has developed the document. The 2015 DGAC met for 18 months and published its 571-page report in January. Most of the report is common sense: for optimum health, people should eat moderately, eat a wide variety of foods, enjoy more fruits and vegetables, cut down on fats, and get plenty of exercise. This all sounds like something your mother might say. The report, however, proposes to change the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” into a policy document that goes beyond its intended purpose of being a guide for proper nutrition. The proposal recommends food choices be based on how foods affect the environment. The report states, “Current evidence shows that the average U.S. diet has a larger environmental impact in terms of increased greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water use, and energy use” compared to diets in other countries. The DGAC recommends diets lower in animal-based foods based on this sustainability argument, which the committee admits it has never made before. There is plenty of medical evidence to show that high-fat diets contribute to certain unhealthy medical conditions, but there is also documentation to show that reasonable amounts of lean meat and dairy products provide excellent nutritional benefits. But all this is beside the point. The “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” is supposed to be a nutritional document. The fundamental purpose of 14

2015 Dietary Guidelines exceed intended scope
the guidelines is to help citizens understand the correlation between nutrition and health. Whether a food is healthy and nutritious when consumed in reasonable amounts should be a yes or no question. It should not be based on how members of a government committee think greenhouse gas emissions are affected by a particular food, but that is exactly what this report does. The report states, “Consumer friendly information that facilitates understanding the environmental impact of different foods should be considered for inclusion in food and menu labeling initiatives.” The DGAC report goes beyond that. The report seeks to correlate Americans’ food choices to the DGAC’s environmental concerns. According to the report, “The impact of food production, processing, and consumption on environ-
mental sustainability is an area of research that is rapidly evolving. As further research is conducted and best practices are evaluated, additional evidence will inform both supply-side participants and consumers on how best to shift behaviors locally, nationally, and globally to support sustainable diets.” According to the DGAC report, these behavioral shifts can be accomplished in a variety of ways. For example, “Align nutritional and agricultural policies with Dietary Guidelines recommendations and make broad policy changes to transform the food system so as to promote population health, including the use of economic and taxing policies to encourage the production and consumption of healthy foods and to reduce unhealthy foods.” “Provide standards for purchasing that create new demands for healthy foods, such as vegetables and fruits, and discourage the purchase and consumption of foods, such as sugar-sweetened beverages.” The DGAC also encourages restaurants and other retail food establishments to “improve” products offered to consumers by “reducing portion sizes in retail settings.” Farm Bureau disagrees with the concept that the federal government should play a role in deciding which foods are good or bad or the size of serving portions in restaurants. We strongly oppose the notion that tax policy should be used to promote or discourage the consumption of legitimate food products. Georgia Farm Bureau submitted official comments to express the organization’s concerns. In these comments, GFB President Zippy Duvall wrote, “The committee’s focus on sustainability is inappropriate given the purpose and scope of the dietary guidelines. Based on the widely recognized role that meat and dairy can play in a healthy diet, we urge USDA and HHS to restore the posiSee GUIDELINES page 35 Georgia Neighbors • Spring 2015

LEE from page 6 members and all of them showed up, but after a while they dwindled down as people died and folks moved away to go to school and didn’t come home. Some of the chapters got so small they disbanded,” Lee recalled. Today, only the Middle Ground Community Chapter still exists. Lee said being a Farm Bureau member kept him up-to-date on what other farmers were doing and helped him keep up with commodity prices. Through the years he’s watched farming change. “Today one man does what 15 or 20 used to do. We grow improved varieties of soybeans and peanuts and the yield has gone up,” Lee said. “The planters became more mechanized and put out seed more accurately. We used to didn’t know what a soil sample was, but now we have our soil analyzed and can tell what condition our 16
soil is in. Extension agents can recommend what you need to add to the soil depending on what crop you’re going to grow as far as adding nitrogen, phosphorus or pot ash.” Irrigation has also played a role in making farmers more productive, said Lee, who began irrigating his crops in 1977. Lee became a director of the Bulloch County Farm Bureau and in 1973 was nominated to serve as vice president with his friend M.L. Miller serving as president. The two held their respective offices for 34 years until Miller died in 2007 and Lee became president. Through the years, he’s gone to countless GFB and American Farm Bureau conventions. “I’ve enjoyed every year of Farm Bureau, and I certainly enjoy the Farm Bureau family. I’ve made a lot of good friends through the years,” Lee said. Lee said educating consumers about
the importance of agriculture is one of the most important things he thinks Farm Bureau does. “Farm Bureau works to educate the public on how important it is for farmers to grow crops and make a good crop,” Lee said. “The last few years we’ve been using Ag in the Classroom to educate the young boys and girls about where their food comes from and how it’s processed.” Bulloch County Farm Bureau Vice President Bill Akers has known Lee since 1991 and has traveled with him to numerous GFB and American Farm Bureau events since 2007. “I think Mr. Lannie is an icon for Georgia Farm Bureau. That’s the way the rest of our board feels, too. He’s an icon, and we enjoy every minute of him,” Akers said. “That chuckle of his that you hear, you’ll hear daylight to dark.” Georgia Neighbors • Spring 2015

Insurance UPDATE
GFB Brokerage Inc. gives GFB members more insurance options Access to quality insurance products is one of the many services and benefits your Georgia Farm Bureau (GFB) membership offers. The Georgia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company (GFB MIC) established a subsidiary, GFB Brokerage Inc. in July 2009 as part of a strategic plan to meet the many diverse insurance needs of our GFB members and potential new members while ensuring the financial stability of GFB MIC. GFB Brokerage Inc. is a licensed insurance agency located at the Georgia Farm Bureau home office in Macon. Staffed by nine insurance professionals, this agency offers insurance options to our members that complement and support the policies that GFB MIC underwrites. GFB Brokerage also provides insurance products GFB MIC has chosen not to provide, such as workers compensation coverage. Without GFB Brokerage Inc. our GFB agents would be forced to send some of our current members and potential new GFB members “across the street” to our competitors. This alternative is not desirable or healthy for our organization. GFB Brokerage Inc. provides insurance 18
options to our GFB agents through two different avenues: a direct program and an in-house agency. The direct program gives our GFB agents direct access to carefully selected partner companies that specialize in personal car insurance, commercial automobile policies, homeowner and other property coverages. The second avenue uses the in-house agency services of GFB Brokerage Inc. to obtain quotes and policies for all kinds of commercial insurance and specialty personal lines such as collector automobiles, high-value homes, coastal property, coverage for special events, etc. GFB’s brokerage agency has commercial and personal markets that provide a very wide array of coverages. Some of the policy types offered include, but are not limited to: business owner policy (BOP), commercial package policy, umbrella liability policy, workers compensation, liability insurance for organization directors and officers, employment practices liability, bonds, vacant property, poultry houses, commercial automobile, high-value homeowner policies, cargo coverage, garage liability, cyber liability, municipalities, and mono-line policy (a policy providing only one class of insurance
By Alan Bunch such as commercial general liability). Examples of some of the businesses and personal policies we have insured in the last 60 days include: equine farms, convenience stores, restaurants, apartment complexes, landscape contractors, veterinary clinics, long-haul truckers, log trucks, butcher shops, residential and commercial contractors, professional offices, vacant and occupied strip malls, rental dwellings, pollution liability, auto and machinery repair shops, used car sales, churches, and non-emergency medical transportation. The use of GFB Brokerage Inc. along with the products offered by GFB MIC positions your GFB agent to meet all of your insurance needs. If your Farm Bureau agent recommends writing a policy with one of our partner companies, he or she is trying to match you with a policy that best meets your insurance needs. Our brokerage partners have been carefully screened using industry standards and selected based on their performance and service records. It’s important to understand that these companies are a part of the Farm Bureau network of strategic partners. GFB Brokerage Inc. supports the communities across Georgia where our county Farm Bureau offices are located. Since GFB Brokerage Inc. began operating almost six years ago, our in-house agency has grown significantly. GFB Brokerage has returned more than $6 million to our local county Farm Bureau offices, which allows our county offices to promote Georgia agriculture by funding local ag literacy programs and other community youth programs. GFB Brokerage has grown GFB membership by allowing GFB agents to write policies for many new GFB members we otherwise would not have been able to serve. If you have a business insurance need, talk to your GFB agent about the insurance options GFB Brokerage Inc. offers. We will do our very best to assist you and your agent in choosing insurance options that will give your and your family the best coverage possible. ELECTRICITY from page 4 facility. He opted to rent out the land due to tax considerations. Chase ultimately entered into a 20-year lease agreement with Washington Gas & Electric, a Washington-D.C.-based utility company. In some respects the arrangement works the same as a landowner renting his land to a farmer who uses it to produce a commodity like peanuts or cotton. “The reason I’m fascinated by it is it gives us something that’s a completely different set of risk factors,” Chase said. “We’re always worried about rain and worried about all these other things, and here is something that, if it’s not raining, guess what? It’s producing power. That’s something I was excited about.” Such agreements are becoming increasingly common. In December, Southern Power, a subsidiary of the Southern Company, announced the development of a 900-acre solar facility in Taylor County. Last year, Green Power EMC, which supplies alternativesource electricity to 38 of Georgia’s 41 EMCs, announced plans for a 135-acre solar-generating site in Jeff Davis County. According to www.georgiaenergydata.org, there are more than 1,000 solar installations statewide, with a generation capacity of 156,544 kilowatts and an annual production of 236.7 million kilowatt hours. Georgia is a popular place to locate solar power facilities because the state is among the top 15 in potential energy from solar power. “I think we need to be thinking about how we’re going to interact being energy suppliers, because I really think we’ve got some opportunities. We have land for solar here. It’s not wind. Wind is great in the Midwest. Here it’s solar,” Chase said, noting that Georgia is
one of the better-suited states to generate solar power, based on its capacity for solar radiation. Development of alternative sources of energy could create opportunities for farmers to enter into arrangements like the one Chase is in. Georgia Power’s ASI incentive program for utility-scale generation is complete, but spokesman John Kraft said the company continues to seek new and cost-effective ways, including solar arrays, to generate electricity. “Outside of specific programs, any party in Georgia is free to invest in solar facilities in order to generate their own power, to sell the power to Georgia Power or a combination of both,” Kraft said in an email. He noted that landowners should consult with trained solar consultants before entering into any contracts. Chase said the opportunities could be profitable and should be welcomed, but added that energy-production arrangements are often complex and require caution. “The first thing a farmer needs to do is talk to his attorneys, look at all the issues that he might have to face,” said Chase, who is serving as chairman of the American Farm Bureau Federation Energy Issue Advisory Committee. “Look at the lease documents. Those are things that I’m not that comfortable with. This is completely different.” Online resources--------------------------------------------------------Georgia Power solar programs: http://tinyurl.com/gapwrsolar. eorgia led the nation in cultivated blueberry production last year according to a report released by the United States Department of Agriculture in January. Georgia blueberry growers produced a total of 98 million pounds of blueberries in 2014 from 16,600 harvested acres. Other top states for cultivated blueberry production were Washington with 96.1 million pounds, Michigan with 92 million pounds and Oregon with 86.1 million pounds. Maine led the nation in wild blueberry production last year with 104 million pounds. In the late 1980s Georgia farmers were growing about 3,500 acres of blueberries, according to the University of Georgia. Today, they are cultivating about 20,000 acres. Blueberries are grown across the state, but the majority of Georgia’s commercial production is in Southeast Georgia. In addition to tasting great, a onecup serving of blueberries is an excellent source of vitamin C, fiber and manganese, which helps bones develop. They also contain proanthocyanidins, a substance that may help prevent urinary tract infections. While blueberries taste great eaten alone, this recipe pairs them with peaches – Georgia’s other famous summer fruit. A medium peach offers more than 20 nutrients including vitamins A, C, E, potassium, zinc and fiber. Georgia peach growers produced 71 million pounds of peaches in 2014, according to the USDA, third behind California with 1.2 billion pounds and South Carolina with 131.4 million pounds. Georgia has 10,900 acres of bearing peach trees while California has 44,000 acres and South Carolina has 14,000.

Chicago Doctor Invents Affordable Hearing Aid Outperforms Many Higher Priced Hearing Aids
Reported by J. Page
Chicago: Board-certified physician Dr. S. Cherukuri has done it once again with his newest invention of a medical grade ALL DIGITAL affordable hearing aid. This new digital hearing aid is packed with all the features of $3,000 competitors at a mere fraction of the cost. Now, most people with hearing loss are able to enjoy crystal clear, natural sound — in a crowd, on the phone, in the wind — without suffering through “whistling” and annoying background noise.
New Digital Hearing Aid Outperforms Expensive Competitors This sleek, lightweight, fully programmed hearing aid is the outgrowth of the digital revolution that is changing our world. While demand for “all things digital” caused most prices to plunge (consider DVD players and computers, which originally sold for thousands of dollars and today can be purchased for less), yet the cost of a digital medical hearing aid remains out of reach.
Satisfied Buyers Agree AIR is the Best Digital Value! “I am hearing things I didn’t know I was missing. Really amazing. I’m wearing them all the time” —Linda I., Indiana “Almost work too well. I am a teacher and hearing much better now” —Lillian B., California “I have used many expensive hearing aids, some over $5,000. The AIRs have greatly improved my enjoyment of life” —Som Y., Michigan “I would definitely recommend them to my patients with hearing loss” —Amy S., Audiologist, Indiana
Dr. Cherukuri knew that many of his patients would benefit but couldn’t afford the expense of these new digital hearing aids. Generally they are not covered by Medicare and most private health insurance. The doctor evaluated all the high priced digital hearing aids on the market, broke them down to their base components, and then created his own affordable version — called the MDHearingAid®AIR for its virtually invisible, lightweight appearance.
Affordable Digital Technology Using advanced digital technology, the MDHearingAid®AIR automatically adjusts to your listening environment — prioritizing speech and de-emphasizing background noise. Experience all of the sounds you’ve been missing at a price you can afford. This doctor designed and approved Georgia Neighbors • Spring 2015
Nearly Invisible! Same Features As Expensive Hearing Aid Competitors Mini Behind-The-Ear hearing aid with thin tubing for a nearly invisible profile
Advanced Noise Reduction to make speech clearer
Feedback Cancellation eliminates whistling Wide Dynamic Range Compression makes soft sounds audible and loud sounds comfortable

ways be a priority of the foundation. Funds raised through the foundation will allow GFB to take agriculture into classrooms across Georgia and teach the next generation the importance of farms and farmers and making healthy food choices. Consumer education is as important as childhood education in terms of food security and general awareness. Consumers have access to more information about how their food is grown than ever before, but often this information is incorrect. The foundation works to provide consumers with science-based information that helps them understand why farmers use the production practices they do and why agriculture is a national security issue. The foundation’s efforts to educate students and adult consumers will help secure a prosperous future for Georgia agriculture and economically viable communities across Georgia. Thanks to generous gifts from individuals, county Farm Bureaus and agribusinesses, the foundation has received more than $131,000 in donations as of April 30. The foundation raised more than $55,000 during its inaugural gala held March 7 at Stone Mountain where Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell performed. Leavell, who is a GFB member and timber farmer, spoke of his passion for conservation and applauded GFB for establishing the foundation. “I’m here tonight as a musician, but I’m really here tonight because I’m a tree farmer and I believe in conservation and the purpose of what you are doing with your foundation,” Leavell said. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation or learn more about the foundation, please visit www.gfbfoundation.org. You may also mail your tax-deductible donation to the foundation. GFB forms foundation to fund ag awareness programs Late last year, Georgia Farm Bureau (GFB) formed the GFB Foundation for Agriculture to raise funds for the numerous programs our organization coordinates to promote agriculture and increase consumers’ understanding of how their food is grown. For many years GFB has used our Ag in the Classroom, scholarship, educational outreach and leadership development programs to reach the public and achieve our mission of being the Voice of Georgia Farmers. These four programs will serve as the pillars of the GFB Foundation for Agriculture. GFB created its Foundation for Agriculture to build awareness, understanding and a positive public perception of agriculture through youth and adult education activities. Donations to the foundation will allow ag advocates to create greater dialogue with consumers, teachers, children and policy makers. The GFB Foundation for Agriculture is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and donations are tax deductible under IRS Section 170. Through publicly and privately collected funds, the foundation will focus on increasing consumers’ understanding of agriculture by putting farmers and other agriculturalists in a position to share the wonderful story of agriculture. 24
By increasing consumers’ understanding of agriculture, we can help them make informed decisions on policy that affects where their food, fiber and fuels come from. With less than two percent of the American public producing the food that feeds and the fiber that clothes our nation, it is more important than ever for the ag community to work together to share our story and influence the future. Education is the long-term solution to public policy and consumer awareness issues. The foundation is working to educate consumers, policy makers, teachers and children about Georgia agriculture with science-based answers that provide a greater security for our food and fiber supply. “This foundation is going to give Georgia Farm Bureau the ability to partner with people involved in agriculture to educate people outside of agriculture so they understand farmers have their best interests at heart in terms of how we produce their food,” said GFB President Zippy Duvall. Two very important educational aspects of the foundation are Ag in the Classroom and consumer education. Helping children understand where their food comes from and how it gets from the farm to their plate using hands-on learning activities will al-

Small animal surgeon treats variety of cases
Dr. Chad Schmiedt examines Richard, a renal transplant patient. UGA is one of three vet schools in the U.S. that does the procedure.
If you have a dog with an intestinal obstruction or a cat with a urinary obstruction sent to the teaching hospital, chances are Dr. Chad Schmiedt, UGA CVM associate professor of soft tissue surgery, may treat it. “We do dogs and cats mostly. Surgery of any tissue that’s not orthopedic and not neurological,” Schmiedt explained of his specialty. “It’s really general surgery.” That translates into surgery of soft tissue in the head and neck, lung and heart surgeries and removing tumors. “I like fixing the problem. A lot of the medical cases are chronic management. We get to actually go in, if you have a dog that’s suffering from something, fix it, and they’re all better,” Schmiedt said. “I like doing a lot of different stuff, and soft tissue surgery lets you work on a whole lot of different cases.” The most specialized surgery Schmiedt does is feline kidney transplants. UGA is one of three vet schools with faculty that perform the procedure. The University of Pennsylvania and University of Wisconsin are the others. 26
“I get a lot of satisfaction out of the renal transplant cats. You develop a pretty significant bond with the owners,” Schmiedt said. “We follow these cats for years and years.” Renal failure is a common problem in cats that may be treated by adding a third kidney from a donor cat. The recipient’s existing kidneys are seldom removed, and the new kidney is placed in the lower abdomen next to the bladder. The donor can live a normal life with one kidney, Schmiedt said. Recipients are usually six to eight years old and must take an immunosuppressant the rest of their lives. The recipient cat owner adopts the donor cat, taking it home after the surgery along with the recipient, Schmiedt said. Donor cats may come from pet shelters or be a cat already in the home of the recipient. The average cost of the surgery is $15,000, Schmiedt said, adding that he only does two or three of the surgeries a year. Schmiedt, who has been a faculty member of the UGA CVM since 2007, says the new facility improves the teaching experience for vet students. “There’s a lot more space where students can have rounds. Now every service has a dedicated rounds room,” Schmiedt said. “In the old building we had rounds cheek to jowl on top of each other. Somebody would be yelling in the corner with dogs barking over here and cats meowing over there.”

HOSPITAL from page 3 conducted at the hospital address other issues besides cancer including kidney disease, arthritis, heart disease and epilepsy. There are also trials for horses and dairy cattle. Animal owners interested in learning more about the trials should visit http://tinyurl.com/ugavettrial or call 706-542-6692.
Dr. Kelsey Hart treats Lola, a 14-year-old mare waiting to foal on April 17. The mare had suffered a hemorrhage in her uterine artery and was suspected to have an infection in her placenta, which put Lola and her foal at high risk. Lola delivered a healthy filly April 18 and both are doing well.
As an assistant professor of large animal internal medicine at UGA CVM, Dr. Kelsey Hart’s specialty is evaluating and treating diseases of the organs, infections and neurologic diseases. “I’m kind of like Dr. House on that show. Internal medicine specialists generally don’t do surgery. I work on diagnosing and treating disease,” Hart said. “I really like the challenging detective cases where you’re putting a puzzle together.” Hart says 85 to 90 percent of her patients are horses, but she also treats cattle, sheep and goats, pigs, alpacas, llamas and the odd camel. Most of her cases are horses with gastrointestinal, respiratory or neurologic diseases or infections, but the large animal clinic also treats a lot of horses with lameness, reproductive and surgical problems. “You name it, we have probably seen it at some point,” Hart said. Her rarest case was about 10 years ago as an intern at the UGA hospital when she treated a horse with fungal meningitis – a fungal infection in its brain and spinal cord. “Fungal meningitis had only been reported in a few horses in literature to begin with, and it had never been successfully treated,” Hart recalled. “At the time this horse was diagnosed, an antifungal drug had become available that was affordable for horses, so this was the first horse to be successfully treated and reported in literature. The horse made a full recovery, and I still talk to the owner.” Hart says the layout of the new teaching hospital helps prevent spread of infection among the animals. “The new facility is a lot bigger than the old facility and it’s built that way for a reason. It’s spread out, which enables us to segregate animals better according to their degree of sickness. Our healthier animals aren’t mingling with our really sick animals.” The new facility also lets hospital staff take CT scans of the legs or head and neck of grown horses or give them radiation therapy as this equipment is now housed in rooms large enough to accommodate large animals. “We’re all incredibly grateful to the state and the private donors that made this place possible,” Hart said. “They really did a good job of working on all aspects of the design.” See HOSPITAL page 28 Georgia Neighbors • Spring 2015

Hospital prepares next generation of vets
UGA CVM student Justin Brown is pictured with a pygmy goat being treated for an infected eye orbit.
The skills third and fourth-year UGA CVM students gain working in the teaching hospital are critical to the future of veterinary medicine in Georgia. WEST from page 6 800 pounds and then sell them through teleauctions,” West said. West, who grew up plowing with mules, says he couldn’t have imagined the changes that have taken place in agriculture. “These tractors, it’s unreal how much they’ve updated them, but they’ve got real expensive, too,” West said. “I’ve got one tractor with GPS (global positioning satellite system). I never would have imagined a GPS tractor.” West joined Farm Bureau in 1971, saying “I was involved in farming and Farm Bureau was a part of agriculture. They needed someone to serve on the Gordon County Board.” He was elected president of his county Farm Bureau in 1981, a position he continues to hold. A few years into his presidency, the county Farm Bureau outgrew its office building and West took on the challenge of selling the old office, buying land to build a new office and overseeing construction of the new office. West says there were no other businesses around them when GCFB first built its office on Hwy. 53 in the mid 1980s. With I-75 located about two miles away, the road has grown into a bustling corridor. In 1984 West was elected by Farm 28
Katie Malehorn from Nashville, Ga., graduated from the UGA CVM May 2 with plans to join a general practice as an associate and practice small animal medicine. “Being in clinic is everything. This past year, when I look back, the clinic is where I gained the most,” Malehorn said in an interview two weeks before graduating. “When you have a client in front of you, and a patient in your care, and you’re working up their case, it really sticks as opposed to just being in the classroom and reading about it.” Malehorn says having been exposed to the top-of-the-line technology in the new hospital will help her be a better general practitioner. “With me going into a private practice, I can now visualize my patient having an MRI, and I can prepare my client for what they will see if I refer them to a hospital such as UGA,” Malehorn said. Justin Brown, from Brooklet, will begin his fourth year of vet school in the fall. Brown originally planned to go to medical
school but got involved with livestock and meat judging as an undergrad in the UGA College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences and decided to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine. “I like how we as veterinarians can ensure food safety and influence public health by having healthy animals and ensuring our beef cattle, swine and lambs are safe for us to consume,” Brown said. This spring Brown did a three-week large animal rotation during which he treated a 25-year-old Clydesdale that presented with aspiration pneumonia. “I really learned a lot from that case because he was receiving multiple antibiotics for his pneumonia, and he also had some parasite infections that we had to handle. It was a good medicine case because it was very intensive and we got to see him progress over those three weeks.” Visit http://vet.uga.edu/hospital to learn more about the UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital and http://vet.uga.edu to learn more about the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine.
Bureau members from the 15 counties in Georgia Farm Bureau’s 1st District to represent the district on the state board of directors. West held the position until this past December when he retired after 30 years of service. “One thing Georgia Farm Bureau has always tried to do is work with state leaders. Our policy development process is something we need to keep going because it gives us the issues we need to work on for farmers,” West said. West points to the Conservation Use Value Assessment (CUVA) tax program, which came out of GFB’s policy development
program in the 1990s, as an example of the organization’s effectiveness in working to represent the legislative interests of farmers and rural Georgia CUVA allows farm and timber land to be assessed for tax purposes on what the land is being used for rather than its fair market value. This has protected farmland across the state from being developed in areas where urban sprawl makes it economically challenging to farm. “Henry West has been a lifelong advocate for agriculture and a great supporter of Farm Bureau,” said GFB 1st District Field Representative Roby Murray.

WE, THE FARMERS from page 2 meat and dairy can play in a healthy diet, GFB is urging USDA and HHS to restore the positive nutritional statements about these products that have been included in dietary guidelines of the past. Meat provides us with zinc, iron and protein. All three of these nutrients support our immune systems. Dairy foods are naturally nutrient-rich, unlike many of the other drinks on the dairy aisle that have nutrients added. Milk naturally provides calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, Vitamins A, D, B12, riboflavin and niacin.
Numerous studies have shown that cuts of lean meat and low-fat or fat-free dairy products can be part of a healthy diet. Dietary guidelines should be based on the health and nutritional benefits food provides consumers, not on a political agenda. You can learn more about this issue on page 14. I was raised to believe that the words of the Bible reveal the truth about life, and if I study its words prayerfully I will discover the answers to all of life’s questions. The New King James Version of the
Bible tells us in Genesis 9:3: Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs. In Genesis 9 God made numerous promises to Noah and his family including their dietary guidelines. All things God created are good and his words are the truth that never changes. So when you ask me and my family, “What’s for Dinner?” the answer is “BEEF!” I thank God for giving us the truth. God Bless!

Cogongrass, a highly invasive weed, has been identified in 56 counties across Georgia. To stop the spread of cogongrass, the Georgia Forestry Commission is offering free spraying to help landowners eradicate the weed. Federal tax proposal endangers Georgia’s tree farmers By Steve McWilliams __________________________________________________________________________

policy that is actually working? As it deliberates, Congress must understand that the existing timber tax provisions are generating economic and environmental returns that are not only critical to landowners large and small, they also are a mainstay for rural communities. Lawmakers need to appreciate the hardships that landowners in their districts would face if the timber tax provisions are eliminated.

Many Georgia farmers count on their timberlands to produce additional cash crops, and given the multiple-year growth cycle of trees, they rely upon a reasonable and stable federal tax treatment of their long-term investment. Timbergrowing farmers McWilliams could lose this assurance if some tax reform proposals in Washington D.C. gain traction. If Congress acts precipitously, throwing out provisions that have made private ownership of timberlands a good investment for generations, the consequences could be severe not only for the families and companies that grow trees, but also for our state’s economy and environment. Today, these four tax provisions encourage landowners to invest in working forests: • The long-term capital gains treatment of timber revenue. (IRC 1231(b)(2)) • The deductibility of timber growing expenses in the year they are incurred, rather than capitalizing these costs. (IRC Sections 162 and 263A(c)(5)) • Treatment of timberland and standing timber as real property for purposes of the real estate investment trust (REIT) rules. (IRC Section 856) • The deductibility of up to $10,000 of reforestation expenses as these expenses are incurred and the allowable amortization of remaining reforestation expenses over a seven-year period. (IRC Section 194) These provisions encourage growth in the forestry industry that supports 133,000 jobs and contributes an annual $28.9 billion to the economy. At the same time, working forests help clean our air and water, create wildlife habitat and offer recreational opportunities for hunters and fishermen. To their credit, many members of Congress are committed to reforming the U.S. tax system. The timber tax provisions, along with various others, are being eyed for cuts. But why would Congress tinker with a tax

Walmart & Amazon selling Farmland DVD – Netflix, iTunes offer digital viewing –
Take a field trip to a farm via video
Ever wondered how farmers produce the milk, eggs and bacon you buy at the grocery store? Thanks to a new series of videos produced by the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance you can visit a dairy, an egg farm, a pig farm and a farm growing corn to learn how farmers care for their animals and cropland to grow our food. Hosted by blogger Kelly Snyder (www.ReDefinedMom. com), USFRA’s online video series takes viewers on a field trip via video to see different farming practices and meet farmers growing your food. The videos, which range between two to four minutes, highlight daily activities of farmers from Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. “The opportunity to spend time on a farm alongside a farmer is not one that most people get,” said Randy Krotz, CEO of USFRA. “This new online video series brings the farm to your living room, office, kitchen, classroom, mobile device - anywhere you are. Americans have so many questions about food production and the first videos in this series can help address some of those by showing just how farmers are growing and raising food.” To watch the videos visit www.youtube.com/user/usfraonline.
The DVD of Academy Award®-winning filmmaker James Moll’s feature-length documentary, Farmland, is now available for purchase at select Walmart stores, Walmart.com and on Amazon. The DVD lists for $14.99 but was available for $9.69 on Walmart.com and Amazon at press time. The movie, which premiered in theaters across the country in spring 2014, gives viewers a first-hand look into the lives of six young farmers and ranchers. Crawford County Farm Bureau President Leighton Cooley is one of the farmers featured in the film. Cooley is a fourth-generation farmer who raises chickens, cattle and hay with his father, Larry. Farmland is also available to rent on DVD from Netflix and to purchase or rent via digital download on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Blockbuster On-Demand, Sony PlayStation, Vudu.com, Xbox and YouTube. Visit http://farmlandfilm.com for more information about the documentary.

GUIDELINES from page 14 tive statements about those products that have been common in dietary guidelines of the past.” American Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman offered similar comments in his letter to USDA and HHS. According to Stallman, “The committee appears to have taken a negative view of livestock products (including both meat and dairy) based almost exclusively on their perceived environmental impact…such a focus is inappropriate given the defined scope of work for this committee.” In a free society, market forces are best for consumers to express what they want. Government should provide clear, unbiased information to educate consumers as they make choices, but the government should not limit those choices. At nearly 600 pages, the recent report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is not clear, and it is certainly not unbiased. This report picks winners and losers, and that is not the role of government. Jon Huffmaster is director of the GFB Legislative Dept. and GFB Asst. Corporate Secretary.

FORD from page 30 Last year 2,764 GFB members took advantage of the Ford/Lincoln Bonus Cash Program and saved nearly $1.4 million. Georgia’s Ford/Lincoln dealers were instrumental in delivering these savings to our members. Earlier this year, GFB recognized the top dealers in the state that promoted the bonus cash program to our members. The top 10 dealers were presented with a plaque recognizing their efforts, and the top dealership – Woody Folsom Ford in Baxley, Ga. – received a pizza lunch for its entire sales staff. T

LETTERS Dentist Recommends Vinegar
I
have some useful advice that others may be interested in. When I got my Dentures several years ago, the Dentist told me use vinegar to get the plaque off them. So - about once a week I soak them in the wonder liquid and Presto - they sparkle. I have since gotten implants - Since I am not fond of the hygienist scraping the posts for cleaning - I clean them with Vinegar before going for my check-up. On my last visit to her, she couldn’t believe how clean they were and praised me for it! I then asked the Dentist that put the implants in if the vinegar would harm the metal posts and he informed me it is OK to use it. - D. L., New Braunfels, Tx.
