Macs &
Burgundy: Wine Pairings for the Real World
by Vanessa Price, Adam Laukhuf Sancerre and Cheetos go together like milk and cookies. The science behind this unholy alliance is as elemental as acid, fat, salt, and minerals. Building upon the outsize success of her weekly column in Grub Street, Price offers delightfully bold wine and food pairings alongside hilarious tales from her own unlikely journey as a Kentucky girl making it in the Big Apple and in the wine business. Using language everyone can understand, she reveals why each dynamic duo is a match made in heaven, serving up memorable takeaways that will help you navigate any wine list or local bottle shop. Charmingly illustrated and bubbling with personality, Big Macs & Burgundy will open your mind to the entirely fun and entirely accessible wine pairings out there waiting to be discovered—and make you do a few spit-takes along the way.

Like an in-house sommelier, The Sommelier’s Cookbook will guide you to wine pairing bliss. First, learn what makes for a good pairing. Food, Wine, and Your Health
Modern nutritional science is only a hundred years old, so it’s no surprise that we’re constantly bamboozled by new and competing information about what to put into our bodies – or that we sometimes cling to reassuringly straightforward food myths which may no longer be true. In a world where official dietary advice seems to change all the time, and online opinions are loud and often baseless, we ask a health coach to cut through the noise and tell it like it is.
1. “Red meat isn’t good for you.”
Eat whole foods and things found in nature. Specifically, aim to eat high-quality options with a focus on protein. Consuming high-quality lean red meat shouldn’t be considered taboo, especially when done in moderation. Further, combining it with vegetables, fiber, healthy fats and resistance starch makes for a well-rounded, highly nutritious meal.
2. “My doctor told me to be vegan.”
Being a vegan has many pros and is indeed better for animals. Cutting out dairy, meat, poultry and animal products may, of course, have certain benefits (i.e. weight loss), but it comes with its drawbacks, too: a lot more sugar, carbs, processed products, and less protein. French fries (fried in vegetable oil) are vegan, as is most candy. Often, professionals tell people to change their diets drastically because it is a lot easier and far less time-consuming. But there are no quick fixes when it comes to health. Know that real change takes time and patience.
3. “Healthy food is expensive.”
Whole-grain cereal with high-quality ingredients for $11.99 sounds like highway robbery at first glance. But the truth is, diabetes is expensive. And so is poor health. Fruit loops are $4.99 and offer zero nutrition. Zero. They house a future of poor health and more significant problems. So spending $7 more on a cereal that has protein, better ingredients and unprocessed food may seem costly now, but what’s more important than health?
The books above are all available at www.amazon.com
4. “I can’t lose weight. I can’t sleep. Eating healthy is expensive. I drink wine to relax.” Wine is expensive. Consider budgeting differently to prioritize healthy eating. Second, wine disrupts sleep, wrecks your cortisol, and is pure sugar. It leaves you bloated and sluggish and interrupts your entire system. Try exercising during the day to release happy endorphins, drink calming tea at night to take the edge off, and use the wine budget to buy a beautiful, nutritious meal.

Global Foodie Travel
Want to be a global foodie? Head to these amazing locations and tour their restaurants and bars. Tour the local markets by foot. Take to the tea houses, the street stalls, the bagel shops, and the speakeasies. Speak to local chefs, cheesemakers, and wine professionals in search of the best, freshest, and most unique products. The culture of food and drink in cities around the world tells a story about history, lineage, and identity, and continues to prove that we are what we eat.
Tokyo, Japan
Boasting the greatest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world with 183 designees, Tokyo’s dedication to culinary technique, quality ingredients, and tradition continues to astound. No singular cuisine defines this bustling city, but diners can easily find world-class sushi, ramen, and izakaya with minimal fanfare.
Istanbul, Turkey
Whether it’s a classic seafood experience along the Bosphorus, simit from a street cart in the old city, or fine dining, Istanbul is a city that’s full of character and charm that delivers toptier hospitality. Influenced by its proximity to the Aegean coast and broader ties to Mediterranean Europe, Istanbul sings with cross-cultural cuisine, bountiful spice markets, and a laid-back approach to food and drink that’s best illustrated by its strong and strident national drink, raki.
Mexico City, Mexico
From Enrique Olvera’s benchmark Pujol to the more casual but equally distinct puestos (street food stands), CDMX is the place to be for unparalleled food. Some come for the tacos al pastor, others for the inventive dishes being crafted by the city’s new generation of up-and-coming chefs. Whether it’s traditional fare or boundary-pushing modern cuisine, Mexico City delivers.

Istanbul, Turkey
Mexico City, Mexico
Paris, France
Bistro culture burns bright in the City of Lights, where classic dishes like steak frites still reign supreme. In recent years, Paris has expanded its culinary purview, offering diners exemplary Eastern European, Italian, Japanese, Middle Eastern, and Mexican options. Always a destination for adventurous food lovers, Paris consistently rises to the dining occasion.
Lisbon, Portugal
Food defines much of life in Lisbon, from fresh seafood like octopus and sardines, to tinned fish and the custard tarts known locally as pastel de nata. The city offers up everything from casual, tabernastyle dining to more formal fine dining, like that at the famed chef José Avillez’s Belcanto, in the Chiado neighborhood. Seafood, local cheese, and Portuguese wine also play a major role in this stunning locale.
Rome, Italy
Roman cuisine is defined by tradition, embodied in its trattorias, generational dishes, and regional ingredients. Come for the cacio e pepe, stay for the pizza al taglia, and don’t shy away from the amatriciana. However, to focus solely on the past and overlook the city’s modern cooking movement would be a mistake. Places like Marigold thrum with a new Italian sensibility, which is what makes this imminently historic food city so exciting — as Rome arches toward the future, it never forgets its roots.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Noma may have put Copenhagen on the map in 2003, but this Danish city has continued to flourish in the past two decades, bringing Nordic food to the international stage. So iconic is Copenhagen’s food now that the city’s hot dog, traditionally served with remoulade and pickled cucumber, is featured in the second season of the U.S. television series The Bear. As Noma prepares to close its doors, fine dining establishments like Kadeau, Vækst, and Alchemist continue to draw introspective and curious diners from Denmark and beyond.

Heat Emergencies: When to Go to the ER
Beach volleyball, barbecues and bathing suits are just a few of the images that might come to mind as the end of the school year nears and we start firming up our summer plans. While we want you and your family to have fun in the sun this season, it’s important to know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and the differences between the two.
Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses excessive amounts of water and salt, typically from sweating. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
• Clammy skin
• Decreased urine output
• Dehydration
• Dizziness
• Excessive sweating
• Extreme thirst
• Fainting
Heatstroke
• Headache
• Muscle cramps
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Weak, rapid pulse
• Weakness
Heatstroke is a serious medical emergency that occurs when your body is unable to control its internal temperature. Call 911 and get to your closest emergency room as soon as possible if you or someone with you experiences the following symptoms:
• Altered behavior such as slurred speech or staggering
• Agitation, confusion, irritability, disorientation or delirium
• Body temperature of 104°F or higher
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Dry skin rather than sweaty
• Headache
• Muscle cramps
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Weak, rapid pulse
• Weakness
Without treatment, complications from heat exhaustion can lead to permanent organ damage or death, depending on how long the patient was exposed to a hot temperature. Get the person to the ER right away, doing your best to keep them cool.
AdventHealth Palm Coast ER and AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway ER are both conveniently located in Flagler County.

Florida Food & Wine Festivals
You’re probably familiar with Florida orange juice and Key lime pie, grouper sandwiches and conch fritters, but how about frog legs with grits, or tacos with a side of celebrity swank? Florida’s food festivals offer something for every taste, from country-style gatherings to poolside soirees.
Seeing Red Wine Festival - Seaside/November
Raise a glass to this November event, which Fodor’s Travel named one of 10 Can’t-Miss Fall Wine Festivals. Wine connoisseurs and newbies alike flock to the charming Panhandle town of Seaside. Four days of reserve wine tastings accompanied by some of the area’s best food and live music – we’ll drink to that.
Florida Seafood Festival - Apalachicola/November
You could argue that the entire Sunshine State is a celebration of seafood, but the official festivities happen over a weekend in November each year. The festival, which bills itself as “Florida’s oldest maritime event,” brings oyster eating and shucking contests, a 5k run, parade, carnival, fireworks and big-name country music stars to the otherwise sleepy Panhandle town of Apalachicola. In fact, it’s been named among America’s 15 Best Small-Town Festivals by Fodor’s Travel. And that’s no fish story.
Annual Kumquat Festival - Dade City/January
The peculiar-looking fruit with the peculiar-sounding name gets recognition each January during this event in historic downtown Dade City. Celebrate the so-called “gold gem” of the citrus family by indulging in all things kumquat, from pies to smoothies to salsa. The day-long festival attracts as many as 40,000 attendees to this small town, about 40 miles northeast of Tampa, who come to enjoy local entertainment, face painting, antique car show and more.
Frog Leg Festival - Fellsmere/January
Hop on over to Fellsmere on Florida’s Central Atlantic Coast for some adventurous eating. Held each January, the four-day event features rides, music, arts and crafts and of course its signature frog leg dinners with grits, coleslaw and hushpuppies. Can’t stomach frog legs? There’s also gator tail. Tastes just like chicken!
South Beach Wine & Food Festival - Miami/February
If you prefer your food with a side of swank, then head to Miami Beach in February. One of the premiere culinary events in the country, the five-day extravaganza offers tastings and seminars for every palate and budget. Past events have ranged from Tacos After Dark to a Cocktail Showdown to Grilled Cheese Happy Hour. And of course, no Miami Beach food festival worth its salt would be complete without a lineup of celebrity chefs.
Florida Strawberry Festival - Plant City/March
Life is sweet when you spend a day noshing on delicacies like strawberry shortcake, strawberry pizza and strawberry burgers (seriously) in Plant City, an agricultural town about 20 miles east of Tampa. Attractions like the Pioneer Village, pig races and appearances by the reigning Strawberry Festival Queen lend timeless charm to the two-week March event, while A-list headline entertainment keeps the festival in step with modern times. Sounds berry good to us!

Care that’s Mother & Daughter Approved.
Your mom. Your safe space. Your advocate. Your nurturer. Your friend. She’s been there for you since the very beginning – protecting you, guiding you and loving you unconditionally.
Over time, as you both continue to grow and transition into different chapters in life, she may need your support a little bit more. There comes a time when you can give back the love and support she’s given you over the years.
That’s when we can help. When decisions get tough and you become overwhelmed – we’re here to guide you with the many options available. Our goal is to meet with families one-on-one to make an individualized plan for each of our residents, helping them live life to the fullest, whether they are more independent, in need of a little help or need full-time support. My husband and I wanted to move my mom to a place close to us when she started needing more assistance. My mom, even though she’s struggling with dementia, felt the love here. This was home. Something about this place went to my heart. ”
