Discover Your Heritage
Exploring genealogy makes an excellent hobby, especially for older adults. It’s something that’s accessible to anyone with an internet connection. It can be enjoyed from the comfort of home. And it offers many other social and emotional benefits:
Sense of Purpose
It’s not unusual for recent retirees to fall into depression during the transition from long-time work routines into a so-called life of leisure. Researching family history can provide an intriguing focus that ignites the imagination. Any family’s story is likely to be filled with many small mysteries and discoveries that can keep a person engaged for a long, long time.
Deeper Personal Identity
Everyone wants to belong, and learning about ancestors is a wonderful way to ground an individual’s life within a greater context of time and place. Tracing family roots back through generations can help a person connect more deeply with a sense of self by learning about their family’s past.
Mental Stimulation
Researching genealogy encourages the development of new skills (such as working with computers) and provides valuable opportunities to improve cognition and self-esteem. Reminiscing and exploring the unknown past can have deep psychological benefits for older people, giving them a chance to reconnect with their own memories while also learning new things about family members they never knew.
Family Connections
Researching genealogy can make a great family activity, involving siblings, children, and grandchildren. It can bring family members together around a shared interest and also inspire intergenerational storytelling and sharing. Learning about common ancestors has a way of opening up doors of communication.
Social Benefits
Researching family history offers the chance to meet other people who are likewise engaged in learning about their own families. There are plenty of online groups and forums that can offer conversation and community. Some researchers wind up turning their family histories into other projects as well—a talk at the local library or senior center, a history lesson for local school children, or a memento book for family members.
Family Matters
As we get older, we realize the importance of family, not just the people we grew up with or raised, but the broad extended family of great aunts, third cousins twice removed, and great-great-greatgreat grandparents. There is much to be said for looking back on the generations that came before.

India: UNESCO World Heritage Sites
by Shikha Jain, Vinay Sheel Oberoi, et al.A stunning photographic survey of India’s thirty-eight World Heritage Sites. The cultural sites in India are a rich repository of the country’s long history, bearing witness to the creativity and influence of multiple communities, crafts, and religions. What is Cultural History?
by Peter BurkeUpdated in its third edition, leading historian Peter Burke offers afresh his accessible account of the past, present and future of cultural history, as it has been practiced not only in the English-speaking world, but also in Continental Europe, Asia, South America and elsewhere. Burke begins by discussing the ‘classic’ phase of cultural history, associated with Jacob Burckhardt and Johan Huizinga, and the Marxist reaction to it, from Frederick Antal to Edward Thompson. He then charts the rise of cultural history in more recent times, concentrating on the work of the last generation, often described as the ‘New Cultural History’. He places cultural history in its own cultural context, noting links between new approaches to historical thought and writing and the rise of feminism, postcolonial studies and an everyday discourse in which the idea of culture plays an increasingly important part. The new edition also surveys the latest developments in the field and considers the directions that cultural history has been taking in the twenty-first century and may take in the future.
Japan’s World Heritage Sites: Unique Culture, Unique Nature

Whether you are planning to travel to Japan or just enjoy learning more about this history of this unique land, Japan’s World Heritage Sites is sure to inspire.
World Heritage Sites by UNESCO
World Heritage Sites are designated by UNESCO which judges them under strict criteria with a view to the aim that they reflect the world’s cultural and natural diversity and are of outstanding universal value. Sites that no longer meet these criteria are delisted. There are currently 1,073 World Heritage Sites. They attract a general readership of travelers and those with an interest in natural or cultural history, geography, architecture, heritage preservation, and wildlife habitats and conservation. At a time when knowledge of global history, culture and natural heritage has never been more urgent, it is a timely addition to all bookshelves.

They were made for a way of life on the land that is carried on today throughout Alaska.
The New Dictionary Of Cultural Literacy

Exploring Heritage Through Film
Sometimes it can feel as if we live in a world that is so focused on division, but it’s important to remember that, despite language barriers and cultural differences, we are all the same. This list of inspiring films document the wonderful, tragic, and important things happening all around the world. Some focus on natural beauty and preservation of our planet; others tell the story of history, fading cultures, and war-torn cities. Nonetheless, all of these documentaries and docu-series inspire community and connection. Theses 5 globally focused documentaries encourage us to learn more about what’s happening outside of our own circles and to support our neighbors, whereever they may be, when in need.
1. The Square
Directed and produced by female cinematographer and Egyptian native, Jehane Noujaim, The Square tells the story of the Egyptian Revolution, beginning in 2011, as it has happened behind the headlines. Through personal stories and dramatic imagery, this documentary—released in 2013 and nominated for an Academy Award—takes us straight into Tahrir Square where we gain a deeper understanding of Egypt’s recent history and the conflict between Egyptian activists and the Muslim Brotherhood.
2. Life In A Day
After sending out a global request for people to film and send in videos of their day, producer Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning director Kevin MacDonald received over 80,000 clips from people across the globe. The result? A breathtaking and unifying documentary. A beautiful reminder of the life that is happening all around the world, this film inspires a sense of community and oneness.
3. The Look Of Silence
A tragic and haunting documentary, Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence showcases the painful aftermath of the 1965 and 1966 Indonesian Genocide through the lens of a surviving family. The film, nominated for an Academy Award and released in 2014, is important, educational, and a must-see to learn more about Indonesia and the effects of genocide on a society.
4. Living On One Dollar
Over one billion people in the world are currently living on less than one US dollar per day. Set in rural Guatemala, this documentary follows four friends as they embark on a social experiment, attempting to live within the local community for 56 days—working, eating, and living solely on one dollar a day. An eye-opening and inspirational story, this film challenges us all to learn more about the impact of currency.
5. Daughters Of Destiny
In India, children impacted by generational poverty are denied access to education, but The Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project has set out to change this. Directed by the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth, Daughters of Destiny follows the journey of five girls as they strive for a brighter future at The Shanti Bhavan Boarding School. A 2017 Netflix Original docu-series, the story is told in four exciting episodes.

Heritage Tours
Embark on epic cultural discoveries with our bespoke culture and heritage tours, discovering fascinating archaeological sites, cobblestoned medieval cities, and ancient traditions. With expert knowledge, these luxury tailor-made itineraries will not only take you to the world’s most renowned monuments but also lead you off the beaten track to less discovered sites. Whatever your interests, whether it’s the Moors of Spain or the Samurai of Japan, dedicated travel experts will be on hand to personally design your unforgettable trip.
Delve into the ancient world of Greece on private tours to its most prominent landmarks including the Acropolis, Delphi, and Meteora, or explore the marvels of Ancient Rome such as the Colosseum, the largest ancient amphitheater ever built. You might explore the vast complex of Angkor Archaeological Park on a cultural vacation to Indochina or travel to Kyoto in Japan, the country’s historical and cultural heart. Here, explore ancient temples, sip tea in traditional teahouses, and encounter geishas.
Austria
With postcard-perfect villages, grand cities with opulent palaces, and mountainous landscapes for world-class hiking and skiing, there are many reasons to visit Austria. Everywhere you turn history comes to life although the old and new often blend seamlessly while the stunning peaks of the Alps provide a breathtaking backdrop throughout.
Bali
The world immediately conjures up images of vibrant culture and tropical beauty. Known for its lush rice terraces, serene beaches, and rich Hindu heritage, Bali offers a diverse range of experiences. From bustling markets to tranquil temples, it’s a destination that captivates every traveler’s heart. Bali is a bucket list destination that never, ever disappoints.
It may be one of 17,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago, Bali stands out with words like “paradise” and “nirvana” often used to describe it. Only about 1.5 miles from the eastern tip of Java, just west of Lombok, this lush island is an ideal destination for travelers on a budget as well as those with money to spend.
Cambodia
Cambodia is a criminally overlooked luxury travel destination. While the famed Angkor temples are aweinspiring, Cambodia offers much more. It invites daring travelers to uncover uncharted adventures, making a bid for the title of Asia’s most thrilling destination.
Beneath Angkor’s splendor, Cambodia boasts diverse landscapes, from lush jungles to pristine beaches and lively cities. Explore remote temples in Koh Ker’s forests or cruise the Mekong for a dynamic range of experiences. Whether you seek culture, adventure, or island serenity, Cambodia has it all.
Germany
Germany is a vibrant country where one can discover everything from modern artworks and World War II sites to charming villages with half-timbered architecture. Scenic hikes, cruises on the Rhine, wine tasting, and sipping from a stein at a traditional beer hall are just a short list of what’s on offer. There’s lots of history to discover across the country, from glorious Roman ruins to the more recent like the Berlin Wall with a mile-long stretch serving as an open-air art gallery. Berlin’s quirky side, creative vibe, and fantastic nightlife always make it a joy, but strolling through charming villages with cobbled streets and half-timbered homes feels like stepping into a storybook.
India
From the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayan ranges to the beaches of Kerala; jungles teeming with elephants, leopards, and the Royal Bengal tiger; to its eclectic, kaleidoscopic cities. Mumbai, famous for its Bollywood productions, and the iconic Taj Mahal Hotel; the former British capital of Calcutta, which still retains its old-world charm; and Delhi, the effervescent capital. The Portuguese influences of Fontainhas in the former capital of Goa, and the Dutch influences of Cochin’s old fort area, abound with stories a world away from the brilliantly painted, towering temples of Tamil Nadu. Yet, is any city as historic as Varanasi? It is the oldest living city in the world, whose very existence is about death.
Japan
As a destination, Japan really can offer it all. Urban escapades in Tokyo and Osaka really are unbeatable; heritage sightseeing in Kyoto, Nara, Nikko, or Hiroshima throws up insights into both ancient and modern history. Takayama and Kanazawa offer beautifully preserved samurai quarters, artisan craft stores, and stunning gardens. Gorgeous hikes and thrilling outdoor adventures can be found in the Alps, Miyajima, and Kii or Noto peninsulas. Nowhere else provides such striking contrasts as Japan.
