Process Book by Gaia Van der Zeyp
The Process Book
Process — page 18-27 Final — page 1-140

Make a visual annual report of all research, process and the final result of all the assignments. Look for a structure and how you’re going to communicate the content. Look for a sequence to place all the information. Think about how you will place text and images and choose a readable font that suits with it. The book can be read by future students or people you know. The result is a clear and attractive designed publication that informs the reader of the projects you’ve done this year. Make sure it looks like a beautiful book that you can buy at the book shop. The size of the book is 198 by 280 millimeters. The minimum of pages is 120. You can choose the paper you want to print on but go for a recto/verso colour print.

The New Campus
Process — page 28-37 Final — page 82-85
8
In 2018 Sint Lucas School of Arts is going to have a new campus. To get the idea what students exactly want we got the assignment to do research about it. How do we want to work, learn, design and make art in the future? Every student got his own element to work on. We start with a brainstorm in the whole class and made a mindmap about the art campus. We brought all ideas together in one layout. Every element visualizes 32 pages. All elements will be collected in one book. The size of this book is A3 and printed recto/verso in colour.

The I like (not) Book
Process — page 38-47 Final — page 86-93
10
Make a book about things you like, things you used to like or things you don’t like. Visualize all different answers you found and place them on a page. Look after combinations. Work with different techniques like typography, photography or maybe collages. The size of the book is 198 by 280 millimeters. Start on day one and design a page each day. The result are 80 pages minimum, recto/verso in colour.
11
My Identity
Process — page 48-57 Final — page 94-97
12
This assignment consists of two parts. The first part is to create your own idenitity. Create something to present yourself as a graphic designer. It could be a movie, an object, a poster, business cards, a book, ... You’re free to make whatever you want but the result needs to be perfect. Next to this there needs to be a website. How can you be online as a graphic designer and how do you present your creative work. A portfolio is a must for every designer.
13
The Year Assignment
Process — page 58-73 Final — page 98-105
14
Create a project of what you fascinates and prefer in graphic design. This project can be a publication, a website, something technologic, a new identity, a campaign, a product and so on. It even could be a combination of things. Do you want to redesign something or do you just want to tell your personal story? You can experiment with typography, colours, form, materials or techniques. It’s important to find you’re own thing, that you can make and show. Look after something you wanna know more about it or something you want to work on in the near future. You can take a look at the I Like (Not) Book you created and use it as an inspiration. Not only the result is important but also research and process. This assignment is a preperartion to your Master degree.

Bachelor Class
Process — page 74-79 Final — page 106-109
16
A bachelor class is a choice of lessons you got at the begin of the year. I choose for the class named letterpress printing which is a technique of relief printing using a printing press. There where no actual assignments during this class and you were free to make whatever you want. Because I was curious about different press techniques I had the idea to make something where I could use a few techniques so I could learn these and maybe use again in the future.

Process of The Process Book First of all I’m going to show you the process of my process book. I started writing down all the assignments we got this year during semester 1 and semester 2. I decided in which sequence I wanted to show them. My first idea was to make a timeline about my year starting from September until June. Because I worked on every assignment during the whole year it was a bit difficult. My second idea was to show the explanation of the assignments first, followed by the process and ending with the final result using the colors black, grey and white. The second idea became the concept of the book.

The New Campus Brainstorm We started a brainstorm with the whole class in the first week of school. We were brainstorming about what we wanted and what we needed at the new campus. After that we put all ideas into one document for an overview. I marked the things I could use for my part of the project: infrastructure in the canteen and the multipurpose hall.

30
Research After the brainstorm sessions it was time to focus on our own part. I started doing research about the current canteen and multipurpose hall.
31
32
33
Layout For the layout I found a system by using dots and squares with a cross in it to indicate what we should keep from the current canteen and multipurpose hall and what we should change. I also made a moodboard for the future canteen and multupurpose hall. Both places need to be multifunctional, for example the canteen can be a place here students can lunch anytime but also a place where they can work, even after school hours. A lot of people asked for a big white space with a lot of green.

I Like (Not) Concept ideas I got the idea to scan myself in and I experimented with scanography. I putted all things I like, used to like or things I don’t like on my scanner and took picures of it.

A mix of photography and scanography Because I only used scans the result got a bit boring. You saw one scan after another and so on. I decided to use normal pictures I already had and new ones. I mixed these photography pictures with the scanned pictures and the result got less monotonously. To make a difference between the things I like and things I used to like or not like I decided to reform the pictures. In the book you see the old likes and not likes as a tiny picture or one that is moved on the scanner. The likes are mostly big and clear pictures.

My Identity When we started this assignment I already had a logo that I used over a year. I realised that the logo didn’t say much about myself so I decided to think about something new. I did some research about the meaning of my name and started working with it. After a few feedback moments and changing the bad kerning, a new logo for myself was born. As we needed to look for an internship for next year, we had to make something extra next to the identity. I decided to make some business cards because it’s easy to give to someone who’s interested in you’re work. Also made a few stickers which you can stick on some envelopes or to hold a rolled up poster together.

The old and meaningless logo I’m not using anymore.

Year Assignment Idea For the most important assignment of the year I did some research about what I wanted to work on. I came across an article about expensive food. Some food is expensive because of the brand and we think we pay for the quality of the brand but most of the brand products are produced by the same manufacturer as generic or store brands. It’s advertising that makes the brand product so expensive. After reading this article I took a look at advertising and realised that almost every advertising about food is the same. They always use the same elements to make their product ‘attractive’. In my opinion, they’re not. I began to collect the elements you saw a lot like fruit, mosly lemon and lime, water splashes and water drops, ice cubes and so on. But also food brand logo’s and backgrounds.

Installation to create your own ‘attractive’ advertisment The next idea I got was to make an installation about this food advertising. An installation where you had the possibility to create you’re own ‘attractive’ advertisement. You start choosing a generic brand product, in this case a white product without any logo on it. The next step is to add colour and a logo to the product. The next steps are all about the design of the advertisement; you can add a background and some elements.

Letterpress Printing For my bachelorclass I did letterpress printing. I decided to make a calendar and worked with the meaning of every month. Per season I used different print techniques. I went for lino cut, monotype, printed with a wooden plate and even did a screen print.

The Canteen and Multipurpose hall at the New Campus The result of my part for the New Campus of Sint Lucas School of Arts. I created a layout for both parts to make it clear what we want and need in the future. All information is based on brainstorm sessions, surveys and my personal wants and needs.

Drawing lessons Every drawing lesson we went to a different location. I had this book I found at a thrift shop about places in Antwerp where I started to draw in. I always searched for a link between the drawing place and picture in the book. Next to drawing on location we had this lessons at school where we have to draw a model and every week we had to make a selfportrait to practice the drawing of a face.
