FOOD

A tiny, crowded bar in a Seville backstreet was the home of the best patatas bravas I sampled in Andalucia: a rich, thick tomato sauce that complemented rather than interfered with the crispness of the potato slices, topped with a cloud of creamy garlic mayonnaise. A pillowy wedge of tortilla de patatas deviated from the traditional with the inclusion of cubed chorizo, encompassing the othERWISE MUTED mAVOURS IN SMOKY PAPRIKA HEAT While perhaps lacking somewhat in quality compared to the fare on offer in Seville, the tapas available in Granada is an undoubtedly good offer for students and backpackers on a budget, without COMPROMISING TOO MUCH ON mAVOUR 5NIQUE TO THE city, the bars operate on a principle of providing a small plate every time a drink is ordered. This ranges from a handful of salted popcorn or a couple of olives in the watering-holes surround-

ing the touristy Plaza Nueva, to terracotta bowls piled with grilled marinated peppers and plates adorned with slivers of Iberico ham in the more traditional haunts. Travelling provides a fantastic opportunity to inDULGE IN FOREIGN CUISINE AND DISCOVER NEW mAVOURS and combinations, providing that the traveller is willing to explore, even if just slightly, further AlELD THAN THE BUSY TOURIST HUBBUB IN SEARCH OF food that is appreciated for its beautiful simplicITY .EXT TIME YOU lND YOURSELF IN SEARCH OF SUSTEnance in an unfamiliar place, wander to a quieter street and enter that small, undistinguished bar or restaurant frequented by locals – what you eat may create memories you'll be able to instantly recall years later.

THE PALEOLITHIC D I E T

Adam Barr gets in touch with his inner Neanderthal and unlocks the meaty secrets to a caveman existence. The Paleolithic diet is not so much a diet as a lifestyle. Forget your previous conceptions of caloriecounting and nutritional values, where cavemen are concerned, calories don’t even exist. Taking our digestive systems back 10,000 years to the dawn of the age of agriculture, the concept of the ‘Paleo’ diet is that whilst society has evolved and adapted to the changes that harvesting crops brought upon civilisation, our genes lag behind, remaining bestsuited to the eating habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. What all this means is that dairy products, grains CEREAL BREAD RICE PASTA RElNED SUGAR AND PROCessed oils (aka tasty stuff) are out the picture. Alcohol too, folks. Indeed, the very founding blocks of the fabled student diet are prohibited by these MILITANT CAVEMEN AND THE EMPHASIS ON lNE CUTS of meat renders the pursuit of this back-to-basics diet out of reach of typical student budgets. So why bother? Well, those who subscribe to the Paleolithic diet swear by its rejuvenating qualities, claiming benElTS THAT RANGE FROM INCREASED ENERGY LEVELS AND clearer skin, to the more outlandish declaration that it ‘sharpens’ your senses, as you 'tune in' to your animal instincts. Not to mention the promISE THAT YOUR BODY WILL glND ITS OPTIMUM NATURAL weight'. Of course, advocates point to ‘diseases of AFmUENCE AS EVIDENCE FOR THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF OUR

MODERN AGRICULTURAL DIETS AFmICTIONS SUCH AS TYPE 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression and forms of cancer and asthma. Also, this diet requires occasionally not eating for periods of up to 36 hours then feasting, apparently to simulate the irregularity of meals in the wild. ‘Professional cavemen’ like to go the whole hog and have an epic workout before the feast, to really feel the burn and pretend the exercise was actually them hunting down their prey. And, to heighten the whole authenticity of the experience, they sometimes reward themselves by gorging on expensive grass-fed beef, raw. Unsurprisingly, these professional cavemen often belong to the same barefootrunning lobby that believes running shoes encourage a poor gait and are responsible for injuries. !S EVER ) lND MYSELF CAUGHT BETWEEN CYNICISM AND IDEALISM HEAVILY INmUENCED BY LAZINESS ) CAN buy into the concept of our body’s digestive system being stuck in the Stone Age and that modern society pushes an unnatural diet upon us, but I lack the funds, the time and the energy to whole-heartedly engage with the lifestyle. However, I think the Paleo diet gives good grounding for indulging in a juicy steak - the ‘feasting’ element is something I can get on board with, the fasting not so much!

BOOKS

Vladimir Nabokov Mary Mary, originally published in 1970, is one of Vladimir Nabokov’s lesser-known novels. It’s well worth a read whether you are interested in Russian literature or not: the character names are manageable even for the uninitiated (the hardest is Alfyorov) and, being set in Germany, the place names are even more so! The main character, Ganin, could have been the inspiration for Wesley Gibson in Wanted; he is dry and incurably bored. Like a Russian Catcher in the Rye, this is another of those books where nothing much actually happens: the whole narrative basically pivots around the reunion of Ganin with his former lover, Mary, but ends before she arrives. Nonetheless, the promise of happiness in a book otherwise so strikingly devoid of it is utterly mesmerising, and more than enough to hold the reader until the last page. Emma Hillier

Maggie O’Farrell The Hand That First Held Mine The novel follows Lexie Sinclar and Elina, two WOMEN APART BY lFTY YEARS BUT LINKED IN THEIR determination not to settle for an ordinary life. Lexie lives in 1960s suburbia: expelled from university, she feels trapped in her middle-class family. Elina, an artist in the present, is trying to look after her new born baby, but is barely able to function after complications during the birth. She has a studio in her garden shed but will she ever be able to paint again? As both women start very different journeys, it’s impossible to predict plot twists, an advantage over a lot of modern novels. O’Farrell manages to slide between the time changes effortlessly, but in parts the plot development feels slow. This is a minor criticism, however, since at times I was so excited to unravel the mysteries, the suspense made my heart beat FASTER &ROM THE lRST PAGE ) UNDERSTOOD WHY the book won a Costa Book Award. O’Farrell’s words are poetic, even beautiful, but do not cross the line into sentimentality or become clichéd. I cannot recommend a novel more this should be your summer read! Kate Bennett

FASHION

Fashion Photographs behind the scenes Fashion is a multi million pound industry which is based largely on image. So what goes in to those images which we all buy into? Who is behind those magazine covers, print adverts and editorial spreads which make us lust after the newest item? Quench Fashion explores all the components which combine to create an iconic fashion photograph.

FASHION

Photographer Arguably the most important component to the creation of the fashion photograph... someone to take the picture. Fashion photography is distinctly different from other types of photography. Selling the clothes is fundamental. The clothes must be captured in such a way that they become desirable. Nevertheless, a talented photographer will look beyond the clothes to the story of the situation and attempt to capture that story. The intimate moments between the photographer and model have the ability to sell. These are the photographs which are deemed iconic and will be remembered and referred to in decades to come. Matthew Rolston is a fashion photographer who is known for his iconic photographs. His signature lighting techniques and detailed approach to the direction and design of the shoot ensure that his photographs are exactly as he envisioned them. And what a visionary he is. Having been discovered by Andy Warhol, Rolston began his career shooting for Warhol’s Interview magazine. Shortly after, he began shooting covers and editorial spreads for the likes of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, W, GQ and Cosmopolitan. What a CV!

Rolston’s shooting style can be seen most evidently in his guest appearance on series 15 of America’s Next Top Model. Seen dressing the entire scene and consulting with the hair and makeup teams as to how best present the models, the drive and vision which goes into Rolston’s photos is evident. He is clearly not a man who relies on the luck of a moment. He creates his own luck. Patrick Demarchelier is, likewise, an esteemed fashion photographer. He has shot covers and editorials for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Marie Claire as well as advertising campaigns for Dior, Louis Vuitton, Celine, Calvin Klein, Ralph Loren, Chanel, YSL and TAG Heuer. So iconic is Demarchelier that his name was even slipped in to The Devil Wears Prada AS lERCE %DITOR IN #HIEF -IRANDA BARKS @$ID $EMARCHELIER CONlRM (E ALSO MAKES AN APPEARANCE IN THE lRST Sex and the City lLM AS THE PHOTOGRAPHER WHO SHOOTS #ARrie for her Vogue spread. %XPERIENCE IS ESSENTIAL FOR A BUDding fashion photographer. Model Finding the right model for the shoot is essential to achieving the desired look. Castings for shoots are of upmost importance, since each shoot requires a different look for optimum impact. So, it is conceivable that any shape or size can make it as a model, as the industry is so broad. Fashion loves those who are different, quirky and unique. Take Lily Cole with her striking red hair, Lara Stone with her ample breasts, and even Kate Moss standing less that supermodel height at 5 foot 7. It seems that anybody can become a model. So, what do you need to make it? #ONlDENCE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ATtribute a model can poses. All eyes are on you when you’re in front of the camera, and it’s up to you to deliver stunning shot after shot. HavING THE CONlDENCE IN YOURSELF TO REMAIN POISED under pressure and scrutiny is, therefore, an essential quality. Patients and passion are also key characteristics in a model. Modelling is not as glamorous as it appears on the telly. You may be waiting around in cold, wet conditions for what seems like years to get that perfect shot. But moaning is not appreciated on set. The abil-

ity to bring energy and enthusiasm to a set is a quality that is deeply encouraged in a model, SINCE IT IS REmECTED IN THE IMAGES It may take quite a while to get your foot in the door. Your passion, then, must keep your patients in check. Don’t become disheartened if you get a few rejections. Persevere. Gain some experience with local magazines and then try again. Approach reputable agencies with a portfolio that demonstrates your potential through a range of shots. When approaching an agency, always GO TO THEIR OFlCE TO CHECK IT OUT $OES IT APPEAR reputable? If they ask you to hand over any money, leave right there and then. A serious modelling agency will never ask you to part with your cash. If you’re approached on the street take a number and get back to them after doing some research into the company (after all, Kate Moss was discovered at an airport). Above all, experience is vital. It will HELP ESTABLISH YOUR CONlDENCE AND ENHANCE your passion for the industry. Study magazines to see what poses are appropriate for different types of shoots. A beauty photograph will be entirely contrasting to a fashion editorial. Also, practise poses in the mirror. Learn how to use your face to its full potential.

Location The location can make or break a shoot - especially if you’re on a low budget and re-shooting is not an option. The team at the likes of Vogue, Elle and Glamour have the resources to create their own location from scratch from within the weather-proof comfort of a studio. If you’re just starting out, however, this will probably not be an option. The key is, then, to keep your eyes peeled. Whenever you’re travelling, just walking down the road, or sitting in a cafe with friends, look at everything. You never know when inspiration may strike. An interesting wall, a quirky armchair or lush green foliage can become the perfect backdrop to a stunning fashion photograph. Think about what clothes you have when choosing the location and the concept of the shoot. Remember that a picture should tell a story. And a series of pictures in a spread should build on that story. Also think about how the clothes would look against the backdrop. Photographing a girl in green in a forest may make the clothes

disappear. Nevertheless, if the concept is based on blending human and nature this would be perfect. Circumstances are vital when it comes to fashion photography. Being practical is also essential when pondering over a location. With little to no budget, all the practicalities, which would otherwise be simple, become a mammoth task. Before organising your location think: 1. What if it rains? 2. Where is the model going to dress and have hair and makeup done? 3. When is the best time to conduct the shoot to get the most out of the location? Your answers to these questions are very important and could result in the vetoing of the initial location due to practicalities. Never fear, there’s always a better location which will be more appropriate.

Hair Stylist Entering the world of session styling can introduce you to people you wouldn't normally meet, take you to places you wouldn't dream of visiting and see you creating work from simple commercial styles to avant-garde creations. The hair stylist is key to bringing the whole look and feel of the shoot together. If you have a passion for hair styling, don’t let it go to waste: talented and professional session stylists are in high demand. And as The Great British Hairdresser demonstrated, anyone with vision, drive and passion can succeed. Household name Vidal Sassoon is, arguably, one of the most famous session stylists. He has been called a rock star, an artist and a craftsman who ‘changed the world with a pair of scissors’. Sassoon is credited with creating the geometric bob which has become iconic in the fashion world. His geometric cuts seemed to be severe, but they were entirely lacquer free, relying on the natural shine of the hair for effect. The advertising campaign for his range of shampoo and conditioner was the iconic slogan, ‘If you don’t look good, we don’t look good’.

22

fashion@gairrhydd.com

British hair stylist James Brown has followed in Sassoon’s footsteps as a ‘Great British Hairdresser’. Having styled the likes of Cameron Diaz, Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham, Angelina Jolie... (the list goes on), he is a stylist in demand. With millions of pounds at stake for each photo shoot, James states that ÑCONlDENCE TO HANDLE THE STRESSÑ IS THE MOST important quality a session stylist can poses. 4HE ABILITY TO DO THE JOB IS NOTHING IF CONldence has vanished. When talking about session styling, James states, "I like not knowing what's next. And the money's great and the travelling. When you get to my level you get a nice business-class ticket. It's a nice life but you have to work bloody hard and take a lot of s**t, actually." If you’re interested in trying your hand as a session stylist, get involved with Quench Fashion’s photo shoots.

Make Up No matter what you do, you cannot underestimate the diverse role of a makeup artist. When telling my housemates about this little feature, they sniggered - "Makeup artists. They just do makeup. Simple as." Since university’s over, this can be their replacement education. Makeup artists read scripts/photo shoot plans and determine materials, budgets, and the look required. Then they will draw or take photos, creating a mood board to show their intended plans. Once they have the OK, the makeup artist can crack on with getting the make up and pre-planning. HowEVER SCOFlNG HOUSEMATES OF THE WORLD LISten up) they also design wigs, beards, masks, prosthetics, cast facial and body moulds, maintain materials, demonstrate cosmetics to clients and style hair. So, if any of the above appeals, there are many roads you can take to destination makeup artist. While there are numerous makeup schools around the world, the London School of Hair and Beauty comes highly recommended. With tutors like Kym Menzies-Foster and Pascal Marin, you will be sure to be in safe hands. Combined, the two have tackled publications such as Vogue, GQ, The Times, advertising such as Guinness and

Puma, programmes such as Top of the Pops, and shows such as Pierre Balmain or Nina Ricci. Men should not be put off by traditional stereotypes about makeup artists. Many a modern man is a successful (and straight) makeup artist. As photo shoots become more obscure and adventurous, the creative designers are expanding their horizons. Jack Pierce was the makeup artist behind the iconic Frankenstein line. Previously an amateur baseball player, he was an industry whore before he was spotted by the head of UniverSAL 0ICTURES (E mIRTED WITH ACTING AND DABbled in stuntman-ism (stunt-manning, stunting? A word for this seems non-existent). Never say no to an opportunity. Take Annie Leibovitz and how she bagged HER lRST COVER FOR Vanity Fair: “I got the job because the makeup artist they had booked WANTED lRST CLASS TICKETS AND HER FEE WAS TOO high. Moral in that story or what?” American Vogue started knocking on her door, and since then the offers have streamed in like THE LETTERS DOWN (ARRY 0OTTERgS lREPLACE

Stylist No girl with a Topshop store card and a shoe collection that rivals Bob Dylan’s throng of guitars can deny that a job as personal shopper would be cracking. A personal shopper, or what is more formally known in the fashion industry as a ‘fashion stylist’, is essentially someone who is paid to have good taste and help others to pretend that they do too. Rachel Zoe - probably the most well-known celebrity fashion stylist of current - is paid nearly £4000 a day to pick out clothes, accessories and make up for young, aspiring, female celebs, while telling them to tousle their blonde manes and tan their pinthin torsos. Indeed, Rachel 'Zero', as she is often referred to in fashion media, is well known for the gaunt style that her clients - namely Nichole Richie, Keira Knightley and Lindsay Lohan - are encouraged to sport. Unsurprisingly, she was the object of a tremendous amount of 'stick' during the great weight debate which reached its peak at London Fashion Week back in 2007. I guess what I’m trying to say is that being a fashion stylist may not be as easy as it’s perceived to be. Whilst Zoe was lucky enough to rekindle her career after a heated fashion

scandal, others aren't so forutnate, their names seemingly stripped from the fashion world, like a dog hair plucked from a velour jacket with a lint brush. The poor, anonymous soul behind Bjork's 2001 Oscar dress (that swan one) probably had their career ruined by biting comments by fashion writers for committing such a whopping fashion faux pas. If being a fashion stylist still sounds appealing, then perhaps you have a ‘passion for fashion’, which the resident fashion expert for ITV's This Morning, Wendy %LSMORE SAYS IS DElNITELY REQUIRED 9OU COULD always start small, as a personal shopper for Topshop, perhaps, picking up a reasonable salary helping store-card holders pick out fancy frocks from the delectable clothing range. Where? Budapest, Hungary. When? 8-15th August, with the top acts playing over the weekend 11-14th. What to expect? If anyone ever needed an excuse to visit the welcoming, vibrant city of Sziget, this is it. This year’s lineup broke my jaw; they’ve somehow coaxed Amy Winehouse into playing, and other top acts range from Kid Cudi to The Bloody Beetroots, Dizzee Rascal to The National. If that isn’t diverse enough for you, there's also a World Music Stage to broaden your cultural horizons. Rightly acknowledging its Eastern European heritage, Sziget showcases some of the best sounds coming out of the region and witnessing the main stage descend into anarchy when everyone’s favourite gypsy-punk band, Gogol Bordello, close the festival - a guaranteed highlight of the trip. http://www.sziget.hu/festival_english How to get there? Keep Snappin Over Summer )T S THE END OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR AND THE lNAL GOODBYE ISSUE FROM Quench. Throughout the year we have been impressed with the high level of entries, and have seen some really stunning photographs winning the competition themes. Although that’s it for our photo competition this year, there’s plenty about online and in newspapers and magazines to keep you busy over the summer. Here’s a few we've picked out for you to try: - The Guardian Travel Competition: Monthly competition; prize - £200 voucher to spend on a print of your choice. Entries are also submitted to an external competition, which could land you an all-inclusive holiday, often tied in with photography classes. Nominated photographs, as well as the winners, are featured in an online gallery on the webpage. - The Guardian Cardiff Project Document Monthly competition; prize – publication on The Guardian's Cardiff blog. Each month The Guardian Cardiff runs a competition theme for the public. The competition can be a good way to gain local exposure for your photographs as well as accreditation. It's worth checking whether newspapers like The Guardian run blogs with similar competitions for your local hometown too.

- The Times Travel Competition: Monthly Competition; prize - often an all-inclusive holiday with photography classes tied in. Unfortunately, The Times now requires a small subscription fee in order to view online content. A competition that used to be free now has the small entry fee of £1 for 30 days of access to the site. Nominated photographs, as well as the winners, are published in the online gallery. - National Geographic 'My Shot' Competition: The National Geographic holds space for two photographs from amateur photographers in each issue. To be in with a chance of getting a photo in this space, search ‘My Shot’ on their webpage. The standard is extremely high, but, if you have the right photo, getting published in the National Geographic is a great way to buff up your CV/portfolio.

- The Guardian Your Pictures: Every two weeks The Guardian prints two amateur photographs in its magazine. To be in with a chance, search ‘Your pictures’ on the website, or on Flickr. 4HIS IS JUST A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF SOME OF THE COMPETITIONS AVAILABLE 4O lND OUT ABOUT MORE REGULARLY RUNning competitions on the internet and elsewhere, log on to www.photographycompetitions.net. The site allows you to subscribe to their newsfeed, providing you with emails on all the latest competitions. The site has a section for free competitions, as well as paid-entry ones, and also allows you to search for competitions by deadline. For the more serious photographers out there, a useful photography blog to have a look at is http://photographygrants.blogspot.com/. The site provides up-to-date information on different awards and grants available to the emerging photographer. From the Alexia Foundation, to the Getty image grants, the blog introduces you to a world of funding and sponsorship out there which you may never have known about otherwise.

PHOTOS

The Unseen This semester we have received so many great photos , both for the competitions and in general. As is always the case, there wasn't enough room for us to print all of them, so we've decided to show some of our favorites here.

For those of you who will be about next year and are keen to be part of Quench, the photography section is going to make a real effort to try and get more student photographs in the magazine. Photo editors Tom and Lucy have decided to try and recruit a team of photographers linked up to emails from all sections of Quench, providing opportunities such as fashion shoots, club and gig photography, as well as other random image requests. Have a think about if you would like to get involved and be sure to give quenchphotos@gairrhydd.com an email if it's of interest! Have a good summer - and goodbye for now!

Pride, parades and party time This week Quench explores why if you are LGBT+, summertime really is the time of year to have fun!

SHUH-MYON-CHKO IS READY FOR THE SUMMER ROCK-OUTS Well it’s been a fun few months of LGBT+ issues; I've had loads of fun covering the things that matter on these pages of Quench. We've documented worldwide issues, such as gay rights, homophobia and ,'"4 ACTIVISM AND TOUCHED UPON LIGHTER SUBJECTS LIKE COMEDY l LM AND MUSIC "UT AS THE ACADEMIC year comes to an end, we all need to be ready to pack our bags for the summer, head home and rock out with the festival and the Gay Pride season! It's been a great pleasure to entertain and inform you this year on these two colourful pages. And don't worry about our future, because next year we're leaving you in the safe hands of Hector Roddan who is taking over in the new academic year, to take Quench LGBT+ section in exciting new directions. Stay tuned. Anna Siemiaczko

A WORD WITH THE BOD Last week I was stewarding the Hay festival, and was lucky enough to catch the ‘less than heterosexual’ Sue Perkins give a lecture with Sandy Toksvig. Aside from this being hilarious - especially after Sandy Toksvig related a tale of her stalker ("a deranged lesbian - the best kind!") - it is also a good way to introduce this article. You see, the summer is a great time to be LGBT+, as there’s simply so much going on! Most large towns and cities have Pride events, and there are also festivals, street parties and music events everywhere! I know that last year I arranged a good proportion of my summer around which city had a Pride event on that weekend, managing to catch Brighton Pride, Bristol Pride and Cardiff Mardi Gras all in under a month. In fact, my girlfriend and I are now pretty much the posterlesbians for Bristol Pride, as we appear in a photo of stereotype inclusivity on the Bristol Pride website. No joke. Anyway, though immersing yourself in this much camp culture weekend after weekend may not be your thing (indeed, may not be advisable if there's only so many glittery, semi-naked men you can take...), I'd still recommend that people do check out some of the events happening this summer. Maybe where you live has a Pride event on, or maybe you could take a trip with some friends who would rather not go on their own. It isn't just for LGBT+ people - Pride is a celebration of diversity where everyone is welcome! So thanks for Hay festival for starting my summer in a most excellently gay way – here’s hoping that continues! Kate Boddington

ARTS

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Cardiff Museum is playing host to an exhibition by the eccentric, enigmatic ParisDWELLER THAT WAS (ENRI DE 4OULOUSE ,AUTREC /FFSPRING OF l RST COUSINS ONLY l VE FOOT tall and lover of all things intoxicating - whether it was of the alcoholic, female or theatrical variety - he would certainly have made a memorable impression upon all those who encountered him. However, it is his impressions of others that have really made a lasting impact. The exhibition, entitled 'High Kicks and Low Life', features a number of his prints, illustrating the public and private lives of the bohemian nightlife of Montmartre, in which singers, actresses and prostitutes are portrayed with great sensitivity. The exhibition runs until the 26th of June and is not to be missed. Sonis Llewellyn

A Few Farewells That time of year has arrived again. The exams are nearly over, our summer is over (thanks for the hot spell; rain for June, July and August?) and uni rooms are packed up as the monotonous pilgrimage home to summer jobs, screeching parents and household chores begins. For some of you folk, this is only temporary: you will return back to chaotic Cardiff in September refreshed BY AN INTERLUDE OF MUMgS l NEST COOKING RARING TO CLIMB ONTO THE STUDENT BANDWAGON ONCE AGAIN For me, this is not the case: I enter the enigmatic world of work this autumn and thus must say a pained goodbye to late nights, lazy mornings and vertigo in lectures after too many vodka redbulls and a dose of Mama's after a night out (all you Cathays dwellers will appreciate this). And yet, these memories of student life are not the only lasting thoughts I will have of what has been a brilliant chapter in my life. I must also close the page on my position as Arts editor and pass the cultural baton on to the lovely Asha Verma, who will take her place on the Quench team alongside my partner in all arts-related crimes of the past year, Miss Kirtsy Allen. I wish you both all the BEST AND AM ABSOLUTELY CONl DENT YOU WILL DO A SUPERB JOB WITH THE SECTION NEXT YEAR ) WILL MISS tea and cakes with Kirsty, the mad rush to meet deadlines and - more than anything - the brilliant people I have worked alongside as a Quench editor this year. To you all, thank you for being so wonderful, and special thanks, of course, to Kirsty, but also to a very special lady, Dom Kehat: you are simply fabulous. Now, to the future and Asha Verma... Katie Haylock

And some new beginnings For me, cities are about exploring the back streets. Only then can I completely unravel the multidimensional arts world the city has to offer. Cardiff is no exception: the quaint quirks are the charms which are very often forgotten in the madness that epitomises student life. So, next year as a newbie on the editorial team, I hope to expose these events fortnightly in every issue, giving a run-up of major and minor events to keep you up to date; just to make sure you don’t forget to discover the latest on the scene. Keeping in line with the current pages, the standard reviews and previews will be there of course, but also extras on artists, photographers, art galleries and workshops. Admittedly, a new term is going to be the very last thought on your mind right now, as wishes for an everlasting summer will be prevailing, but at least you have a little bit of art to look forward to when you get back. Editorial

Well, my friends, this is the end. By the time this issue takes its place in the musty centre pages of gair rhydd, exams will be over, deadlines long forgotten and lectures a thing of the past. It's been a stressful time for the majority but now the summer is upon us in all its halcyon, carefree glory, we can look forward to the finest entertainment this summer's festivals have to offer; strapped for cash or looking to celebrate in financially extravagant style, Quench Music has got you covered. I hope, however, that music has been a comfort throughout your time at university, whether as a calming revision aid in times of anxiety or inspiration for those illfated, late-night dance sessions in Clwb Ifor Bach. Indeed, it's highly unlikely that Quench would be produced to the impeccably high standards it is today were it not for the tiny, albeit comforting, office speakers, which can often reveal more about the personalities using them than any piece of prose. So, enjoy your summers and, most importantly, enjoy music: it will always be there, whatever the mood, whatever the activity. Michael Brown

Great Hall, SU Tuesday 21st June

Had you heard of James Blake this time last year? I certainly hadn't. Since placing second in the BBC Sound of 2011 poll, however, James Blake has become one of the biggest names in cutting edge music. This should be a decent gig from a man at the forefront of the post-dubstep scene. Joanne Southerd

Fans will not want to miss this. Screamadelica Live: the tour that will see Primal Scream play their most successful album, in its entirety, all across Britain. And if that wasn't enough, they're taking Screamadelica to festivals this summer too. Well, it is their best album. Joanne Southerd

For some this will be a nostalgic end to their university degree; Jimmy Eat World were the soundtrack to many a secondary school rave courtesy of massive hit The Middle and recent albums, while not quite matching previous successes, have also proved to be pleasant enough pop-punk fare. The Globe Thursday 23rd June

Solus, SU Sunday 26th June

Millenium Stadium Tues 14th/Weds 15th June

This four-piece, all-girl rock band hailing from Los Angeles are travelling across the pond to serenade you with their dark, dulcet tones. Set to play songs from their critically acclaimed debut album The Fool, Warpaint present a psychedelic exploration of the darker side of rock. Emma Wilford

Angular riffs and algebraic, structural shifts abound as Battles take the Solus stage in support of their sophomore release Gloss Drop. Skillfully weaving elements from pop, rock, jazz, dance and any other broad genres you care to name, seeing Battles live will be an experience like no other. Michael Brown

Yes, your mum has most likely begged you to come to this gig as this time Robbie joins Gary, Mark, Jason and Howie on the largest ever tour the UK and Ireland have seen. Featuring a culmination of Robbie’s solo material as well as old classics such as Back For Good, this is set to be an unforgettable night. Emma Wilford

FESTIVALS: ON A BUDGET Strapped for cash? Jon Berry explores the cheaper options for the summer... 7EgVE ALL BEEN THERE )T GETS TO *UNE AND THE LAST FEW RESIDUAL lGURES OF THE STUDENT LOAN ARE HOVERING tentatively above the bottom of the overdraft limit. Every supermarket purchase for beans and bread is paid with on card. Always with a sense of abject trepidation. It is also around this sort of time that THE lNAL FESTIVAL PROGRAMMES ARE BEING MADE AVAILABLE AND THERE WILL ALWAYS BE THAT ONE STAND OUT ACT THAT HADN T BEEN EXPECTED TO PLAY CONlRMING THEIR PRESENCE AT SOME OBSCURE SMALLER FESTIVAL Not to name any names, but somewhere along the way many of the festival heavyweights have lost their spirit choosing to substitute ethos for commercial viability. A sad fact, but such is the capitalist machine. However, there are still many ways to have the festival experience without the big festivals PRICE TAGS THESE ARE JUST SOME WAYS NOT TO BREAK THE BANK THIS SUMMER

WORK FOR YOUR TICKET

SET YOUR SIGHTS ABROAD

Somewhat oxymoronic, the idea of working at a festival can sometimes be greeted with reserva tion. "When will I get time to party?" I hear you cry. But fear not. Festivals organisers and stewarding organisations, the most everpresent being Oxfam, are sympathetic to the needs and wants of those they employ for festival work. The shifts will often be dispersed over the weekend, and even the days just before and following if you choose to bunker down for the long haul, so there will always be time to enjoy festivities. In return for (usually) THREE EIGHT HOUR SHIFTS YOU WILL BE GIVEN ENTRY to the festival, camping in the crew area (which usually includes showers and respectable toilets) and, depending on the organisation you are work ing with, meal tickets, so the only expense you will need to afford is for alcohol and other chemicals.

Great Britain has one of the highest concentra tions of music festivals of anywhere in world over the summer period. Far from saturating the market to the extent that the prices of indi vidual festivals are brought down, the corporate backing of the bigger festivals brings with it an OFTEN EXTORTIONATE PRICE TAG !S SUCH IT CAN BE an extremely cost effective decision to look to the continent for inspiration. Whether looking towards European staples such as Benicassim and Rock en Seine, or further east to the likes of Soundwave and Exit, the conversion rate will often guarantee a European festival will give big ger bang for your buck than their British rivals. Take, for example, Poland’s Heineken Open’er. &OALS 0RINCE AND 0ULP ARE ALL CONlRMED FOR THE festival which, including travel, will cost you less than many of the festivals on domestic soil. See this issue’s Travel SECTION FOR AN IN DEPTH LOOK at some of the most exciting European festivals this summer.

BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET The fact is that you don’t have to spend in excess OF a TO HAVE A GOOD FESTIVAL GOING EXPERIENCE Size, as I’m told, can be an intimidating thing, so why not forgo such indulgence and half the ex penditure. Half the price does in no way mean half the fun. As follows is a run down of our fa vourite festivals which can be enjoyed for £100 or less, well, almost.

Coming in just shy of the £100 point cut-off point for inclusion in this feature, I had to veto my own selfimposed regulation to include Truck Festival simply because, for the price of the ticket, the value is outstanding. Plus, I've never really been one for rules or convention anyway, even if they are my own. Laura Marling played EOTR in 2008, before spending three years transforming into an award-winning folk-superstar. Thank God she will be bringing her striking melodies, stunning vocals and poetic lyricism to the festival again this summer. X-Men: First Class Dir:Matthew Vaughn Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon

8/10 As the fifth instalment in the ever-burgeoning X-Men franchise, First Class has had a considerable weight of expectation placed upon it, particularly after the lacklustre and overly gung-ho Origins: Wolverine. Fortunately, director Matthew Vaughn, having already proven his superheroic mettle with the superb Kick-Ass, manages to breathe new life into this somewhat tired series. With the focus firmly on the men behind the mutant wars, First Class offers a far more expansive account than its prequelian predecessor. T he plot revolves around the fluctuating relationship between Professor X and Magneto, from their sharply contrasting childhoods (a mansion for the Prof. and a concentration camp for the metal-bending maestro) to mutant recruitment, CIA assistance and, inevitably, the Soviet Union. Set predomi-

48

film@gairrhydd.com

nantly in 1962, the time period affords the film a new sense of atmosphere, particularly with regard to its inventive retelling of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In playing roles so closely associated with national treasures Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, the two leads face a considerable challenge but are nonetheless effortlessly engaging throughout. James McAvoy makes for a suave Charles Xavier (Prof. X), charting his progression from Oxfordian professor to CIA associate, all the while making uncompromising use of the perennially sixties adjective "groovy". Meanwhile, Michael Fassbender depicts the troubled exploits of Erik Lansherr (Magneto) and his interweaving history with multilingual Nazi type Sebastien Shaw, played by a convincingly cruel Kevin Bacon. As well as a stellar cast, one of the film’s greatest strengths lies in its sense of humour: the screenplay is riddled with wry gags and in-jokes, as well as a humorous cameo or two. Despite its occasionally sensitive subject matter, the film never forgets that it is, ultimately, a superhero movie and, as a result, its priority should be on fun, something all too often forgotten in modern blockbusters. However, while the narrative unfurls at a respectable pace, many of the film's most explana-

tory and iconic plot moments occur in the last half hour and can thus feel a little rushed. In addition, the haphazard gang of mutants that make up the film's 'heroes' and 'villains' serve principally as eye-candy for the adm i t t e d l y i m p r e s s iv e C G I battle-porn that occupies the film's latter half, remaining disappointingly underdeveloped as characters in their own right. Still, the focus is, as it should be, on the origins of Professor X and Magneto and, despite a plethora of happenings, twists and turns, the viewing experience emerges unscathed, with an effective, emotive and entertaining direction throughout. First Class? Not far off. Michael Brown

The Hangover: Part II Dir: Todd Phillips Cast: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis

6/10 With the unanimously rapturous reception of The Hangover in 2009, it was only a matter of time before a raunchier and hopefully funnier sequel entered our midst. That time has come, and whilst director/writer/general postbinge visionary Todd Phillips ups the stakes for the second installment of amnesia-fuelled fun, we’re predictably faced with a film that only delivers half the impact of its predecessor. The reason: it’s all been done before, only this time the madness occurs in a different country, and they lose a different friend. The Hangover: Part II immediately opens with a throwback to the original: ‘This time we really fucked up, " groans Bradley Cooper to a confused and angry bride-to-be, and with that we’re whisked back in time to find out how it all happened. Admittedly, the cinema titters with a few

knowing giggles, and ‘this is going to be so funny’ glances are exchanged as the opening credits roll. They get what they expect by the bucket load; if the Mike Tyson tattoo and capuchin blowjob gags were ruined by the trailers, then ladyboy sex revelations and the return of morally retarded international criminal Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) are enough to prompt some LOL moments. It works, then, as a film that you go to see for a few cheap laughs. For original comedy and unforgettable entertainment, though, it more than falls by the wayside. It’s a colour-by-numbers copy of the first installment, traced on to the template of a frivolous gap-year destination, and Phillips isn’t fooling anyone with the addition of cut-rate animal humour by hiring the monkey from Night at the Museum. It was always going to happen, but that didn’t stop it from leaving a sour taste: The Hangover: Part II will surely please fans of easygoing comedy and relatable drunken merriment, just don’t expect anything close to the comedic brilliance of the Wolf Pack’s first effort.

"...it's exactly like living through a hungover flashback-memory of what had once seemed so great." - The Guardian ____________________ "The Hangover Part II sees the same ingredients shaken up in the kaleidoscope, but a less attractive and far less amusing pattern emerges" - Phillip French

A look at the year ahead... Bridesmaids Release date: June 24th 2011 With Judd Apatow as producer, Bridesmaids promises to live up to the likes of similar comedies Knocked-Up and Funny People. This time, however, driven by a female cast, Bridesmaids centres around Annie (Kristen Wigg), who’s been given the task of being the maid of honour to her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph). Coupled with a group OF MISMATCHED WOMEN THE lLM SEES !NNIE navigate the various events that precede her BEST FRIEND S WEDDINGS DRESS lTTINGS BRIDAL SHOWERS BACHELORETTE PARTIES AND GIRL lGHTS 4YPICAL TO ALL !PATOW lLMS HILARITY ENSUES with gross-out gags and an eccentric mix of characters, most notably the peculiarities of the hugely talented Kristen Wigg. Discovered on Saturday Night Live and now in her sixth year, Wigg’s performance alone is reason ENOUGH TO SEE THIS lLM WITH HER HILARIOUS AND touching performance. R-rated, absurd and cringe-inducing, Bridesmaids could prove the female counterpart to the likes of Wedding Crashers and The Hangover. FI

We Need To Talk About Kevin Release date: September 2nd 2011 When it was announced that Lionel Shriver's NOVEL WAS TO BE MADE INTO A lLM IT SEEMS THAT THE lRST THOUGHT TO SPRING TO THE MIND OF MANY critics was "How?", swiftly followed by "Why?"; while We Need To Talk About Kevin is beauTIFULLY WRITTEN ITS SUBJECT MATTER ISNgT EXACTLY easily translatable to the screen. Tilda Swinton plays a mother who, from his birth, can't bring herself to love her son. A sociopath and a bully, was he always this way or did Swinton make him so by blaming him for turning her from a high-powered career woman, into a stay-at-home mother? When he commits a Columbine style atrocity at his high school, she is left to deal with the aftermath of a crime that she feels intrinsically responsible FOR 4HE lLM IS CENTRED ON THE EMOTIONAL IMpact of the atrocity rather than the event itself - a small mercy perhaps in the eyes of those who read the novel. Swinton has received acclaim and is perfectly cast as Eve, and Lynne Ramsey has been apPLAUDED FOR MAKING A lLM THAT SEEMS TO CREEP under your very skin and leave an aftershock AS GREAT AS ITS SUBJECT MATTER EKB

Midnight In Paris Release date: TBA Woody Allen is notoriously inconsistent, with his last effort You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger receiving reviews that were, well, pants. In Midnight In Paris, Allen turns his eye to the perennial home of lovers, penning yet another love letter to yet another city. While the beauty and contradictions of Paris hardly need to be soundtracked and captured yet again, Allen has doubtless put his unique stamp on the city. Owen Wilson plays a discontented script WRITER WHO WHILE IN 0ARIS WITH HIS MEAN lance (Rachel Adams), goes for a night-time walk and ends up in the Paris of 1920, meeting cultural icons like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso. Here he encounters Picasso's mistress, played by the delectable Marion Cotillard, who shows him how the grass is not always necessarily greener. A comment on our obsessive relationship with nostalgia and the fruitlessness of looking back, Allen's romantic fantasy looks likely to be yet another return to form for a master who will always remain the spectre at the feast. Tree of Life Release date: TBA This year’s winner of the Palme D'Or at Cannes, Tree of Life has been met by mixed responses, drawing comparisons in particular to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The plot begins with a father (Brad Pitt) and mother (Jessica Chastain) raising their family in 1950s Texas and proceeds to take a hallucinatory trip into the creation of the world, WITH SCI l AND SURREALIST THEMES AND A JOURNEY down an evolutionary road, from the rise of JELLYlSH TO DINOSAURS AND BEYOND Directed by Terrence Malick (Badlands), the lLM HAS BEEN PRAISED FOR ITS GORGEOUS PHOTOGRAphy and its presentation of the natural world. But, many critics have dubbed it pretentious, with too much attention on beautiful imagery meaning a dearth of believable characters. Tree of Life is by no means set to be a summer blockbuster, with the result being notably art-hourse. The cast is high calibre however, including the likes of Sean Penn, and the lLMgS VISUAL EXCELLENCE COULD PROVE IT WORTH A watch. FI

Melancholia Release date: September 30th 2011 Despite being banned from this year’s Cannes Film Festival after making pro-Nazi REMARKS DIRECTOR ,ARS 6ON 4IER S lLM Melancholia saw Kirsten Dunst pick up the Best Actress award for the portrayal of Justine, a young woman with a promising career but suffering from crippling depression. Also starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Kiefer Sutherland, Melancholia revolves around the dispute of two sisters whilst the planet is threatened as large foreign body approaches, leading to an inevitable deadly collision. 4HE lLM IS SET OUT IN TWO PARTS lRSTLY FOcusing on Justine’s alienation from her family in the approach to her own wedding. The second half shifts to become an apocalyptic drama in which Justine and her sister face the possibility of the end of the world. With an interesting take on the psychology of the apocalypse and an award-wining performance, Melancholia is set to be Lars Von Tier’s MOST TOUCHING lLM TO DATE hTHE CLOSEST HE LL ever come to wrapping us in a bear hug”. FI

Jane Eyre Release date: September 9th 2011 Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre is, second perhaps only to Wuthering Heights, the most iconic and reproduced of the Brontë novels. Its themes of abandonment, shame, childhood fatality and insanity all swirl around the original plain Jane, a character so complex and beguiling she is sometimes infuriating and always mesmerising. Jane is played here by Mia Wasikowska, building on her other literary lead as Tim Burton's Alice in what appears to be a faithful interpretation. As with previous adaptations, the small, plain and simple Jane is forced out of her shell by the perfectly cast Michael Fassbender as Mr Rochester. While it could be contended that yet anOTHER IMAGINING OF THE TEXT IS SUPERmUOUS with an ensemble cast including Judi Dench and Sally Hawkins and having already received critical acclaim in the USA, it seems this version could introduce Jane Eyre to a new generation.
