Start by doing necessary; Then do what’s possible; and Suddenly You are doing the ‘IMPOSSIBLE’

-Francis of Assisi

PREFACE Building is a continuous tense, it continues to build or change and never stop. So it should not be treated like a dead mass. It should perform, breathe and live with the surrounding environment and people throughout its life. A mere good looking building is a waste if it cannot live, respond and enhance the surrounding. Visual beauty is a parallel thing to achieve but should not devastate the function. At the same time I also feel architects should inovate all the time. They should not ask themselves “What should be done?” and “Why?”, but should ask “What can be done?” and “Why not?”.

01 THESIS COMMERCIAL PARK Why Comercial Park ? Often introduced as a space synonymous to a Commercial Centre, Office Park, IT park, business or theme park, a commercial park is broadly a juxtaposition of various commercial sectors along with the environment around inclusive of the recreational, social and green areas. A commercial park is often described as an implementation of social sustainability owing to the mutual agreement of the vitality of such varied range of spaces. With the increase in haphazard commercial congestion of cities, Commercial Park becomes the need of the hour as in the case of Bilaspur, a small city in

the state of Chhattisgarh where new development tends to interfere with age old settlements. A proposed commercial park site already exists but the planning and execution was done with little success due to lack of proper design proposal. The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to involve commercial development with the recreational aspects of life to make it more of a likeable demand. Such an urban development aims at use of materials and techniques that give a common character to the entire development which is why the application is grid shell structures has been done. This grid shell structure also provides

THEME: GRID SHELL an advantage of giving an illusion of horizontal development which makes the development appear less burdened and at the same time, embrace the green environment around.Since all the buildings have their own functionality and participation towards the park, they seem to be entirely different and contribute separately to the landscape of the city. To present the entire commercial park as one entity all the buildings have been designed using grid shell structure as the common element. It may be used as the roofing, envelop or the whole structure in the buildings according to the need. Why Grid Shell ? In the last two decades new leisure and transportation facilities have experienced the emergence of free form architecture; complex curved surfaces are envisaged

TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN OF OFFICE covering extensive unobstructed spaces. Grid shells offer a unique solution to this design challenge. It, at one hand gives the whole park an evenness and similar appearance at the same time it creates an illusion of horizontal development with its organic form. Aim and Scope: The aim of the thesis is to come up with a GRID SHELL DETAILS design solution to develop the land as a business leisure park featuring shops, offices, hotel, restaurant and recreational area etc. The design will try to keep in mind the existing skyline. The design proposal will use the different materials and construction techniques

for the development of form according to the need to get maximum visibility, shading and open spaces. Limitations:  Stress is not given on building estimation.  Individual building’s structural calculation is to be done according to the shape.  Floor plans of hotel building have not been done.

TYPICAL FLOOR PLAN OF PARKING

Even if the mechanism of grid shells is a very clever and well thought system, as wood remains a lively material, it can be subjected to degradation and deformation which as a result will damage the structure and attend to its integrity. Timber construction is limited in terms of environmental impact and load carrying capacity.

02 FARM HOUSE

The task was to design a house serving residential needs in a farm setting. For this fourth semester project the given site was Raipur, which has a composite climate. Plot size was a rectangle of 25m * 30m. Concept: Backyard planning was incorporated with a water body in the prevailing wind direction, which ensures evaporating cooling. The house was kept open from three sides but the glazing on the south facade is miniimum with extra shading provided by the trees.

ENTRANCE VIEW INTERIOR

The farm house will be surrounded by farms from all the sides, so the visibility from the inside has been kept at maximum with the use of glass in almost 90 % of the exterior facade area. However the privacy will be maintained with the rolling curtains. It has been designed keeping in mind that it will be used as a guest house during the vacations , So the spaces were kept compact and games room haves been also provided at the ground floor. The farm house have been designed so that one can see the all the other parts of the building just standing at one place.

BEDROOM VIEW INTERIOR

The entrance foyer of the house have the stairs and a sitting area and it directly opens to the ding area. The kitchen is also not enclosed with walls. At a point the dining area, living area and the kitchen seems to be a single area.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

There is one garage and one bedroom as well in the ground floor area. One game room and a theatre or T.V. room is also at the ground floor. The living dining and kitchen area surrounds a water pool on the south-east side of the building. The stairs leads to a connecting bridge of 2 m.which paases from the middle of the building and connects all the three bedrooms in the uper floor. The master bedroom is big enough to accomodate a siiting area as well so that it can also be used as a living area or meeting area for all the family members. In the construction black painted I- section iron are used as piers and beams in most of the places. It blends with the white background of the building. The language of the building is kept contemporary and modern. The west and north side glazing of the building have been partially shaded by metal jaali work.

03 RESORT Design Brief: To design a beach resort with all the amenities like separate dining area garden, bar and academic block. for third semester project the site chosen was Goa. The project had to be dealt keeping in mind all the amenities and landscaping since it will play a crucial role in the resort. There would be six cottages with balconies and a kitchen area or pantry.

GROUND FLOOR OF RESTAURANT Concept: The cottages are designed and placed in such a manner that each of them is thoroughly ventilated and the effective interior wind movement ensures better comfort. The entrance block and the cottage are conneted by eye pleasing landscaping making the living more pleasing and comfortable. Cottages are placed in such a way that each one is getting proper beach view from their balcony on one side and view of the landscaping on the other. The theme of the overall beach resort have been inspired by the villas in Bali

and their simple yet soothing landscaping. In the planning as we enter we directly see the etrance block, where the waiting area, reception, Bar and Dining area are placed in ground floor, with separate entry to the dinng and the admin area. The first floor is mainly open dining area with a spa and a small security room and pantry. The entrance to the resort is through the admin block and waiting area. Three cottages are place in linear form parallel to the boundry edge, whereas the other three cottages are placed diagonally to accomodate a swimming pool on both of the sides. There is a small gazebo in the middle for the evening seating. The pathways have been designed keeping in mind that it may also be used as a jogging track in the morning hours. So they are kept long enough and also pass over a water body with a fountain to keep the temprature cool in the garden area.

LANDSCAPING OF THE SITE

VIEW OF THE SITE

Separate pathway is leading to the individual cottage giving it a happening entry, to go to a cottage people will pass through the middle of the garden. There is a separate play area for the children on the back side and in clear visibility of the gazebo ensuring the safety of them.

04 SHOPPING COMPLEX The task was to make a shopping complex without the theatre with great view and with all the facilities with proper sitting and parking area. The concept of the building wanders around the form of the building. The planning shape have been kept just like the shape of the site. A big setback of 20 m. have been provided in the front side of the building. with gazebos randomly placed. 5.98

05 BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

PROFESSIONAL WORK (All the works in this section are property of Raghav Patel Architects, Hence should not be copied or modified withoutproper permission)

06 INFO- CITY The project is an Info-park with residential, commercial and office buildings with all related amenities like school, park, shops and residential studios. The whole site was divided into several sub plots numbered from 1 to 16. This was second stage of development and included development of S.P. 1, 6,7, 8, 9,10,11 and 14. view of school Since this is a very large scale project the proper distribution of residential and office buildings were needed and should have been done according to the success rate of the previous deveoplment. So the division was done according to the sub plot divisions. Sub plot 1 and 12 were already having four I.T. office buildings so two more were proposed in the sub plot 1. Sub plots 9,10 and 11 were merged into one to be used for I.T. offices with ground and first floor of the road side buildings to be used for shops. Similarly sub plots 6 and 7 were merged for residential studios. The ground and first floor of road facing buildings in this subplot are also proposed for commercial shops

The main cross road have been designed with separate pedestrian and cycle track with vegetation separating each track. Sub Plot 1 and 12 were having I.T. buildings and two more buildings with similar architectural language are proposed. These new buldings are proposed to have 8 floors each, with floor plate area of 2766 sqm. The frills are used on the southern side of the buildings and minimum openings on the south west side. These buildings are well offsetted from front to give grand entrance with common plot on the back.

SP 6+7

SP 01

Sub plot 6 and 7 are proposed with residential studios as the adjacent sub plot 5 was having commercial shops and there were six existing low rise residential structure which were found to be successful in the context. But the negative point was the lack of open area. So after leaving area for common plot in the adjacent of existing structures, rest area is planned with open area at the centre and residential high rise structures surrounding it. All the related ameneties will be developed in the open area at the centre

Sub plot 8 is the largest sub plot by area. It was allotted for residential development with bungalows, low rise apartments structures and duplexes. So the new development is also proposed for residential use. But the new structures are proposed to be high rise to fulfil the residential demand in the area. Initial development will be of 10 floors and then it will be increased according to the new update in the bye laws of Gandhinagar. All the apartments in this sub plot will be 3 bhk but of two different sizes.

3bhk type -1

3bhk type -2

The road facing apartments will have shops in the ground and first floor, with parking in the front and basement. The back side of ground floor will be parking and upper floors will be 3bhk apartments. Each apartment is of 109 sqm. There are 7 structures of this type. Three individual and four attahced in pairs.

There is only one structure of type-2 with full parking on the ground and first floor. This structure is without any shop in the bottom floors. This includes again 3bhk apartments with area of 111.3 sqm each. These apartments are slightly larger in size and having rather square planning with separate dining area.

There won’t be any 2bhk apartments because previous development is already having plenty of them. But there is a immediate demand of larger apartments according to the developers. So, one tower of 4bhk apartments is proposed in the sub plot 6 and 7. with total of 28 apartments. Each apartment with an area of 283 sqm. This is completely high end apartment with parrking in the ground floor.

4bhk

07 PUNE TOWER This was a competition project in the Pune. The building is a high end apartment with 6 apartment and all the modern ameneties included.

The first aim was to bring something new to the area and after a long time thinking and working forward and backword, we came with the idea of making the building in completely exposed brick and concrete work. Since it was a high end apartment and people may not except the concept of exposed brick so a combined decision of cladding bricks in the exterior of the building was taken.

process views Although the building is made in exposed brick and concrete the overall theme of the building is kept modern and contemporary. The living area with eye soothing planters on the exterior facade just complements the exposed work. Since the idea was new and got tougher with the decision of cladding the walls, the implementation and way of implementation was really important. At the same time the stack parking facility and the very tight bye laws made it important for us to put extra effort and time on the project. rendered elevation

Floating columns were made to support such complicated structure. Which required massive columns and beams throughout the building. Planning is kept simple with staircase and lift kept next to each other in the entrance shaft. Entrance lobby is at the centre of the building with one extra staircase as fire staircase. Entrance opens at vestibule and then to the living and dining area, all the bedrooms in one side of the apartment. There are just 6 3bhk apartments with an area of 2095 sqft. with separate lift and fire scape for each apartment. typical floor plan

DETAIL AT B

The site is in Heavily crowded area of the city facing the road from three sides. Since the concept is new to the area the office had to develop a lot of drawings including working drawings for each exposed wall with groves and bolt sizes specified. The terrace is kept open for all. There is one common waiting area in the ground floor, with stack parking around it. Due to the height variations in the ground and rest of the floors, the waiting area was lifted 1.5 feets from the plinth. Due to the full height windows the typical section was changed and then an extra slab have been added to the beam bottom to the exterior facade. bird’s eye view

boundary wall The details were too complicated due to height variations and wall claddings. The floor height, lintel and sill heights were taken according to the brick size of the cladding with morter. So, none of the vertical dimentions were in round figures, rather they were like 10’-6 1/4’’ floor height, 7’-6 3/4’’ lintel height and regular sil height is 2’-5 3/4’’ and sill height for kitchen is 3’-6 1/4’’. The height of each brick to be cladded is taken as 3 1/4’’ with morter. The regular beam height is taken as 29 3/4’’ . To get the contemporary feel with the exposed work wooden cladded MS and wood is used in various part of the buildings. The entrance is made with wooden canopy and murals on the exposed brick walls. Windows in the ground floor are kept of just 1’ but the centre is kept at a height of 5’5’’.

To complement the style the security cabin and the compound walls have been designed with the fusion of exposed work and contemporary look. For the purpose glass and wood are used. The compound walls are made with exposed brick with small puncture patterns in it to allow partial visibility, with the coping of rough kota stone at the top. In the parking area and many other parts of the building, floral patterns were made in the exposed concrete to give the feeling of the murals. One of such detail is shown below. Even the parapet wall in the washing area of the building is completely made of exposed concrete with linear pattern on it to give a visual effecty of the railings.

08 MODASA GARDEN RESTAURANT This was a really interesting project as it was an open air restaurant and the expectations were too high for the architectural style. The clients and the Chief architect were really inspired from the works at Bali. They wanted it to represent similar architecture, but the budget was telling the different story. Also the time provided for the the project was not too much and it started on the site the very next day it was approved. So the whole set of working drawing was done in 3d.

dining entrance view

dining entrance detail

cash counter detail

The site was divided into three parts entrance for the parking and then 1.5’ above it there was a childens’ play area and a small coffee house. Then in the next level of 3’ the open dining and gazeboes were placed. The circulation in the dining area is kept in the form of a loop with the dining area at the centre. Wall curtains were used in different places to allow partial visual separations between different areas.

Curved edges, trifold niche and blank walls are used to achieve the required style. In the dining area two gazebo were placed with lawns surrounding them. The two sides of the main hall were used for cash counter and washing area. Flat roofs are used in the entrance area of the dining and main hall. Sloped roofs were used in the main hall and canopy. It was a tough call to use only 3d models for the working drawings but the design is executed well on the site. The use of natural kota stones, local materials and floor lamps for lighting purpose made it really elegant and interesting project.

09 MODASA PARTY PLOT Open ceremony grounds are famous in Ahmedabad. This project is a similar project in a city in Gujarat. The project inclded a party plot and a party hall. More emphasis is given to the entrance of the plot since it should look festive and should also should be soothing.

entrance view The total plot size is 190875.54 sqft. out of which, 101990.4 sqft. is ceremony ground. The overall thought was spinning around the ceremonies in weddings in Gujarat. So, the planning was done accordingly to meet the cultural values and the architectural and spatial needs. The discussion concluded that entrance is really important in these kinds of the functional grounds. So, in place of giving straight entry to the ground from parking, the parking was made completely detaiched area from the site. A small office is placed next to the entrance which will not disturb the crowd during the functions. The entrance is designed in such a way that people travel more by foot grasping the ceremonial design in their heart .

ground floor plan

site view

first floor plan

Since this was a ceremony ground the ligthings would play important role as well. So, keeping in mind various elements of lights are proposed in the area. While entering the site we pass through two gazebo surrounded by 12’ walls well decorated with lamps and sculptures. Whole area is surrounded by dense vegetation. A service path of 10’ have been provided around the ground area hidden completely with the dense plantation. It is connected to the service zone behind the main hall. The main hall is having a kitchen,a shaded dining area and storage in the ground floor and a hall and bride and groom rooms on the first floor. The toilet unit is kept separately with small courtyards inside it. The overall look of the site is natural and joyful.

rikh eye hospital

10 EYE HOSPITAL This is a redevelopment project. A two storey residential building of a doctor is to be transformed into a four storey eye hospital. The client wanted the building to be recognised as an eye hospital just looking at it. So, he wanted to include any feature or direct or indirect representation of eye or eye care. So finally the visual chart for the eye checkup is taken as inspiration and a graphic was prepared to indirectly represent the chart. Projections of 2’ are made on each side due to the heavy rain in the area.
