Concert Review: HALFNOISE Review & Photos by Sean Gardner

HALFNOISE is the side project of the legendary drummer of Paramore, Zac Farro. The music that he has worked on under that moniker has been nothing short of an artistic masterpiece. On March 29th, Zac brought the final installation of three HALFNOISE art and music shows to Brooklyn’s Market Hotel. The venue itself matched the overall feel of the show: underground and personal. The small room was jam packed with fans grooving to the wavy and ambient guitar tones of HALFNOISE. Seeing the Paramore drummer perform outside of the context of the band, and in this very different, psychedelic group was truly a treat. His talent as not only a drummer, but also as a singer and frontman really shined through on that small stage, that night in Brooklyn. As Zac played though his set, alongside his group of incredibly proficient musicians, he periodically shifted from his centerstage spot, and put down his mic and tambourine, to a throne behind a second drum kit on stage to rock out on the instrumental interludes of their jam-style psych rock songs. Among their set of previously released songs from older eps released by the group, like “Flowers” and “As U Wave,” the band of course played their brand new single, “Who Could You Be.” The new single is short like a punk song, but plays like a seventies rock n roller, and is available on all musical platforms, and while there has not yet been an announcement of an extended release to come, whatever Zac follows it up with is sure to be absolute good vibes only.

Concert Review: The Mowgli's Review & Photos by Sean Gardner

California Indie-rock ensemble, The Mowgli’s, are an absolutely incredible live band. They really bring their own unique and electrifying energy to the stage. On March 28th 2019, they brought that energy to Brooklyn, as part of the Making Friends Tour with brooklyn natives, Jukebox The Ghost, who’s own energy quite perfectly compliments that The Mowgli’s. With Twin XL as opening up the night, the show was nothing but good vibes from start to finish. It was apparent from the crowd’s non-stop dancing that they had just as much fun as the band did on stage, and The Mowgli's definitely had a lot of fun on stage. They opened with “Say It, Just Say It” from their first album, a perfect nostalgic jam to get the crowd excited, and followed with “Whatever Forever.” During the fourth song in the set, “Talk About It,” the band all switched instruments; everyone was playing a different instrument then they had started with, Colin, the vocalist, was groovin’ on the drums, while the keyboardist and bassist played guitar and the guitarist played bass. All while Kate, the other vocalist kept on singing the hook. The whole switcheroo was a perfect picture of the dynamic of the band; watching it, you could really tell that they all genuinely love playing music together, and that kind of energy most certainly radiates to the fans. After they switched back to their respective instruments, the rest of the set consisted of the hits from each of their albums and EPs with all of the songs from their latest release, American Feelings shuffled into it. Songs like “I’m Good,” “Kansas City,” and “Bad Thing” were among those included. Midway through Where’d The Weekend Go?’s anthem, “Alone Sometimes,” they transitioned it into another iconic anthem by Jimmy Eat World, The Middle. 4

After closing with “San Francisco” and saying goodnight to the fans, Jukebox the Ghost played their set, which was amazing as well. But during their encore set, the guys in Jukebox welcomed all of the Mowgli’s onstage with them to play the Queen classic, “We Are The Champions.” Together, the two bands rocked out, and truly showed what the Making Friends tour was all about: a sense of togetherness and unity through music. The Mowgli’s alongside their friends in Jukebox the Ghost, really know how to curate an unforgettable show, and overall just spread positive energy. They are a must-see live band. Their latest EP, American Feelings is available on all music platforms and is 100% worth listening to and jamming out to.

Concert Review: Say Yes Dog Review & Photos by Jana Vollmer

Say Yes Dog are a synth-pop band trio from Germany and Luxembourg. After not hearing from them since the release of their debut Album Plastic Love in 2015, they finally made a comeback with a new single called "Deep Space." They toured through Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland with a good mix of old and new, unreleased music. Hearing the new songs made me super excited for new releases. Their catchy, synth beats smake you want to finish your Riesling ASAP to get on the dancefloor and dance. A highlight was hearing their song "A Friend" live, which I have been listening to since high school. It makes you want to close your eyes and enjoy the beat while being sent to space with discotheque, like light effects and lots of artificial fog. It was a really chill night, and I hope for the band to get some attention from my fellow friends from across the pond.

Concert Review: Cherry Pools Review & Photos by Brynn Edwards

The idiosyncratic alternative pop band Cherry Pools is currently on their Blutopia tour, and with every city they visit, fans are witnessing a performance unlike any that they have ever, or will ever see again. Delivering a live performance that is a very sincere message from the artist to the audience is a skill that any good musician has to master, and Cherry Pools’ lead singer Martin Broda has figured out how to make it look effortlessly natural. As if the stage’s atypical and extremely blue design wasn’t enough to capture a person's attention, this band has taken entertainment to an entirely new level through performance alone. Their show on March 15th at 191 Toole in Tucson, Arizona was a great reflection of what the guys are trying to convey through both their music, and concerts. Broda makes it no secret on his social media that he is influenced by David Bowie, so the band opening and finishing with a mashup of Bowie’s “Life on Mars?” and Mötley Crüe’s “Home Sweet Home” was almost expected, but still had the audience pleasantly surprised. More covers throughout the show included Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” and Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.” Although Cherry Pools doesn’t have very many songs released, only their 2018 EP Less Religion More Sex with 6 songs on it, they have manipulated those many covers into their set list and made them their own. Pulling in an audience with somebody else’s music is sometimes more difficult than only playing your own discography, but the band’s ability to do exactly that is hugely admirable. If Cherry Pools is coming to a city near you, it’s absolutely worth the trip to see them. While the band is still on their Blutopia tour, any opportunity to see a live show is an experience that won’t be forgotten. As for their future, it’s hard to speak beyond this tour just yet. However, it’s unlikely that any future tours will be any less enjoyable or unique, as Broda’s distinctive personality couldn’t possibly allow anything boring, and Cherry Pools as a whole certainly exhibits that.

Concert Review: Set It Off Review & Photos by Makayla Harr

The crowd raises their hands high in the air as Set it Off walks onto stage.

10

Jayden Seeley of With Confidence kept the crowd on their feet with powerful vocals.

On March 2nd, 2019, I attended Set it Off’s Midnight World Tour with openers Super Whatevr and With Confidence at Mr. Small’s Theatre in Millvale, PA. This concert in particular had an energy that I can’t quite describe. The crowd sung in unison the whole night and Set it Off’s lead singer, Cody Carson, was all smiles when he heard. This concert was my first time seeing Super Whatevr live and I was more than impressed. Their music carries a deep message and I was fortunate enough to meet lead singer, Skyler McKee!

Skyler McKee of Super Whatevr put on an emotional performance, preaching awareness for those who struggle with depression and anxiety. This was my third time seeing With Confidence and my second time shooting them. They’re always so much fun to photograph and they’re one of my favorite bands to see live. The Midnight Tour was also my first time seeing Set it Off. I became a fan of them after hearing the first single off of Midnight, ‘Lonely Dance’, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Their fans are like a family and proudly held up the SIO symbol during multiple songs. I was thoroughly impressed with this concert and enjoyed myself even from the back of the venue. I’m proud to say I’m now a fan of every band on the Midnight Tour!

Cody Carson of Set it Off is hoisted up by the crowd as he prepares to belt another note. 11

Concert Review: Set It Off Review & Photos by Yising Kao

In March, I attended a couple of dates of Set It Off’s Midnight Tour: Pomona, Santa Cruz, and Los Angeles, California, and Mesa, Arizona, with my friend Kelsey. It was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had and I loved seeing the openers as well, With Confidence and Super Whatevr. I discovered Super Whatevr’s music when they were announced as an opener for Waterparks’ Entertainment Tour. Genuine lyrics are the most important thing for me in music, and Skyler truly writes from the heart and cares a lot about others. Their performance had a combination of slower songs and more upbeat songs, and it was a memorable experience of dancing and crying. “Someone Somewhere Somehow” always makes me emotional, and that’s what I love about music. At the LA show, Skyler let us come up on stage during “Good Luck,” so it was a special moment to just dance with my friends and not care about anything else! I’m so happy that my friend Nico got to sing part of the song because she got to live out her dream of performing on stage that night. Super Whatevr is spreading such an important message of raising mental health awareness and I’m thankful for what they’re doing, and they create such a fun and safe environment at their shows. Skyler is one of the most friendly people I’ve met; he takes the time to meet fans and have an actual conversation with them, and it’s always lovely getting to see him! Next, With Confidence performed, and Kelsey and I have seen them at least over 8 times, yet we were still hyped to see them again (Surprising? Not really). Kelsey and I have been trying to get them to play one of our favorite songs from Love and Loathing, “Spinning,” and everyone was down to play it except Jayden, who said they didn’t rehearse it enough. He did say they’d play it next time, so we’ll see! With Confidence’s performance was so energetic and people crowd surfed, including myself. The Santa Cruz show was on my birthday, so going to this show was the best way to celebrate, and I got to see my friend from the area, Delfi! I’ve crowd surfed before, but this was my first time crowd surfing to With 12

Confidence during their most “screamo” song, “Icarus,” and it was awesome. I’m just glad I didn’t get dropped. Also, Kelsey held up a sign that says “PLAY LONDON LIGHTS” last tour, and of course she had to bring it again. They listened and played it in Santa Cruz, so that made our night! Lastly, Set It Off came on stage. Right before they did, the huge screen flashed a countdown to midnight and it was really cool. I didn’t know what to expect because I've never seen them live, but they did not disappoint. Everyone was jumping and singing along, and I loved how Cody interacted with all the fans, whether it was by making eye contact or grabbing their hands. They had platforms they stood on, and the visuals were so beautiful. Maxx’s drum solo included songs like “7 Things” by Ariana Grande, and “Baby Shark,” which was really funny, and he killed it. They performed my favorite song of theirs, “For You Forever,” and I enjoyed singing my heart out. At some points, Cody would stage dive and he even stood up with the crowd holding him up! And It was creative how they made a mashup of some of their older songs. I admire Set It Off’s energy and definitely want to go see them again. Overall, I had a wonderful experience shooting photos of my favorite bands on the dates I attended, and it was definitely worth the long road trips and junk food-all you need are good friends and music!

Interview: Till I Fall

Interview by Calista Fernandez

Bay Area Pop Punk/Alternative band Till I Fall consists of Brandon Leland (lead vocals and guitar), Zax Avila (backup vocals and lead guitar), Anthony Corrigan (bass) and Scott Diemler (drums). I got to talk to the group about their newest EP, “All I Have,” out now, available to stream on all platforms! How did you each discover your love for music and how did Till I Fall come together? I (Brandon) started TiF in 2011 and met each of the guys over the course of a few years of playing music in similar circles. After Zax and I wrote the self-titled EP, we asked Scott to record drums for the album and his sound created such a different vibe and dynamic in the band; it was crucial for him to stay and continue helping us widen our range as a band. Anthony joined us around the same time and helped us become a 4-piece again. He has been an imperative part of building our tour history and being able to play as often as we do. 14

When thinking about your writing process, what inspired you for your new full-length album, All I inspired you for your new full-length album, All I Have? Have? We wrote All I Have over the course of about a year and a half, pretty much from the point of releasing the self-titled EP until the entire record was complete. Our influences are all different. For Zax, it’s a lot of pop punk and alternative rock bands such as Taking Back Sunday, All Time Low, and Bayside. For myself, it’s a mix of Pop-Rock and Hip Hop. The lyricism in music is what I always focus on when I’m listening, and writing is the same. I pull a lot of influence from groups like

Fleetwood Mac, Foo Fighters, and Third Eye Blind, but also from artists like Eminem, Tupac, and Ice Cube. Obviously, the subject matter is different for us, but the way they use language and paint pictures with words is what really inspires All I Have. We see the record as a string of audio surrounding its own world, so we really wanted to try new things and really detail each song and track the best we could to help create a different type of album. You play mainly rock and pop punk music, so who are some of your music inspirations when it comes to sound? sound? For Zax, it’s Taking Back Sunday, All Time Low, and Bayside. For myself, it’s Pop-Rock and Hip Hop, groups like Fleetwood Mac, Foo Fighters, and Third Eye Blind, Eminem, Tupac, and Ice Cube. You released your single “Let Me Breathe” on February 13th, and hoped that the song could “inspire conversation, change, and a more united future for all.” Can we expect the rest of the All I Have future for all.” Can we expect the rest of the All I Have to have similar undertones? to have similar undertones?

The record is going to be different to everyone that hears it, so this is kind of a tricky question. I think we talk about a lot of things personal to us and some things that have happened across the country that have influenced how we see things. We don’t, or at least try really hard not to, write the same song twice, but absolutely believe that we should use the position we have to talk about things that other bands aren’t. If you were each able to work with another artist, who would you choose and why? would you choose and why? Zax: Rian Dawson of ATL for sure, to be able to have Zax: his ear while either creating or recording our new material to me would be surreal. Brandon: Dr Dre. He’s incredible at what he does and Brandon being able to work with him in any capacity would be crazy. Singing on something he made or writing lyrics to something for someone else. Anything. What’s next for Till I Fall? What’s next for Till I Fall? We’ve got some shows coming up in March and April and hope to stay busy touring throughout the rest of the year! 15

Artist Spotlight: Kieran Michael

Meet Kieran (Mikey), an amazing graphic designer based in Northern California! What inspired you to start creating art? My inspiration to start creating art was actually music. Music is something that means a lot to me and is something that I hold very close to my heart. I would always see these designs in my head that were usually inspired by the lyrics from some of my favorites and I had the urge to bring them to life. You’ve designed merch for artists such as 1000 Miles of Fire. What was that experience like? Working with people that I consider my friends is a very fun experience, to go from the initial “We want you to design for us” message to the creative process, the bands vision and then to see your art on the final product is exhilarating. I’ve recently worked with a band called Happy. on a limited valentine merch drop and it was so incredible! I’ve got about 4 to 5 more bands in line and we will have releases in the coming summers! What are some of your long-term goals? My long-term goals all revolve around the merch design industry, specifically within the realm of music and bands. I’d like to eventually work with some of my favorite artists, but of course to achieve big, you must start local. I have a vision of creating my own brand, one that musicians will see and will enjoy enough to potentially work with me! What advice do you want to give to artists who may feel discouraged about their artwork? I feel like this may sound cheesy, but some of the best advice I can give is to never give up. Sometimes you scrap a piece, sometimes you lose a client, sometimes you fail, but that is the beauty of art. Failure is necessary to invoke growth and change. You are good enough, your art is good enough, you will do everything you want to in life and more, you just have to keep pushing! Stay updated with Kieran! Essentially, I got sick of people stealing and tracing my artwork and claiming it as their own, so I decided to draw up this little defender of the arts type guy!

This one is an Awsten Knight piece (not shocking coming from me, I know) based around that sneaky little snippet he released on the last date of the tour!

Skyler McKee of

Super Whatevr Interview & Photos by Yising Kao

Super Whatevr, currently signed with Hopeless Records, was formed in 2016 by singer/guitarist Skyler McKee, with the goal of helping people grow and be vulnerable. Through Mckee’s raw and sincere lyrics, listeners can learn to conquer any darkness they face and be inspired to get healthy. With songs like “Somewhere, Someone, Somehow,” dedicated to Mckee’s cousin he lost to suicide, and “Telelelevision,” about wanting to get rid of suicidal thoughts and holding onto that person who makes you happy, Super Whatevr is an empowering band who is making an important statement in the music industry. They released their debut EP, Good Luck, in 2016, and their album Never Nothing, in 2018, which is based on the concept, “What’s wrong?” “It’s nothing.” But it’s never nothing. Skyler Mckee is one of the most genuine artists out there who truly cares about spreading messages about mental health awareness and suicide prevention, encouraging people to looking out for themselves and others. Super Whatevr has toured with bands such as Waterparks and Set It Off, and are excitingly working on their upcoming album! I love how you’re not just talking about spreading awareness about mental health, but you’re actually advocating how we need to be more open and comfortable talking about mental health. How do you think artists spreading awareness of mental health has changed throughout the years? changed throughout the years? I think that artists have done a really good job at raising awareness and not being as afraid to share how they feel about it, because it’s a scary topic and I feel like a lot of people have their own opinions about mental illness and I think that can be a heavy subject. But the fact that it’s just becoming more readily available and people are becoming more comfortable, artists are becoming more comfortable speaking on the topic, in my opinion, so it’s actually helping people a lot more by making it a little more normalized. I’ve read your poetry on your Tumblr website. You have such a powerful way of writing about your emotions and telling beautiful stories about a variety of topics such as anxiety, spirituality, and love, whether they’re your own stories or others’. Your poems have inspired some of your songs, such as “Benjamin Alphabet” and “Someone Somewhere Somehow,” so how do you decide which poems you want to turn into songs and what stories you want to share? I'm pretty specific about my themes and I'm trying to become more specific about them on my next record, so really, it’s just like whatever topics are more current at 18

the moment, like my parent’s divorce, me going to therapy, getting married, things like that. So, I just write like crazy. What are some things you do that help you get through a bad day? a bad day? Speaking positively to myself is important, and so is finding where a problem stems from. Just stuff I learn from therapy. Your live performances are amazing and so much fun! It’s awesome how you stage dive and encourage crowdsurfers, while simultaneously spreading your music’s messages. What do you hope people take from your shows? your shows? I hope people feel seen and heard, and that they matter and feel important. But also, I hope they have a good time and I like when people enjoy themselves and jump around and sing. It’s awesome how you started to invite people on stage. It’s awesome how you started to invite people on stage. Thanks, I haven’t gotten in trouble! How does your upcoming album compare to Never How does your upcoming album compare to Never Nothing lyrically and musically? Nothing lyrically and musically? Lyrically, I want to to be a little deeper and specific about my own personal life. I had spoken with Awsten Knight of Waterparks about what it means to be like, not just your run-of-the-mill artist. He said to just be yourself and be specifically you and people will be able

19

to relate to that. I used to write pretty vaguely, but for this next record, I want it to be more specific about the things in my life and the ways that I grew from those things. So, I think that’s the difference lyrically. Musically its going to sound completely different. I'm nervous and I don’t know if people are going to like it. We will! We will! I'm just making music that I enjoy and it’s very different.

them best of luck, but I'm trying to be realistic at this point. I know what our next record sounds like, so maybe when that album comes out, we can tour with these bands but I don’t know. I really like Kailee Morgue. She’s phenomenal and anyone from Dirty Hit, and Pale Waves is amazing. Obviously, that doesn’t fit with our music but those are my bucket list bands to tour with because I respect them so much.

On that note, are you collaborating with any artists? On that note, are you collaborating with any artists? I'm working with Awsten. We just did a songwriting session and I really enjoyed it, so I was like, hey do you want to do that more? I'm talking to a couple of different people, but he's the only one who’s like, “Cool, let’s do this,” so I don’t know what the future has in store, but I am recording very soon.

If you had to be stuck in a movie/show for the rest of your life what would it be? your life what would it be? I like movies that invoke emotions out of me, so anything that’s like emotionally jarring. Probably Moana or Frozen. How does it feel to be a parent of so many emos? How does it feel to be a parent of so many emos? It feels good. Its funny that Jess tweeted that we’re parents and everyone’s like “Yep!” I’m cool with it and I would like to consider us decent role models. We genuinely care and I’ve had experiences in the past where people have questioned my genuineness when I was little and still learning. I just want everyone to know that we really do care and we really want to spread the message of vulnerability, mental health, and emotional growth. So, if there were two people who genuinely care, its us. You guys actually put your words into actions, so it really shows. shows. Thanks, we try!

What advice to you want to give to aspiring artists? What advice to you want to give to aspiring artists? Don’t let anyone else tell you what you can or can’t be, and try to be as good of a person as you can and as consistent of a person as you can. No one told me how to run a business because Super Whatevr is a business and a project. And I have to manage myself and other people, so I would say just do your best to be as genuine and transparent as possible and with that being said, create anything you want. Because when I wrote someone somewhere somehow, people were really offended in my family. They were like, “We don’t want to hear this.” And now I’ve spoken to so many people who say, “Hey, this has saved my life.” So that’s why I do it. RAPID FIRE QUESTIONS Favorite crocs? Favorite crocs? These camo ones I'm wearing!

Would you ever design your own crocs for merch? Would you ever design your own crocs for merch? Yes. I wanted to but then Post Malone announced that he made his own crocs and it’s going to take a while to get to that. What bands would you love to tour with? What bands would you love to tour with? There are bands I know who are trying to tour with bands that don’t really fit into their genre and I wish Photo by Super Whatevr
