upcoming events WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 2010. KHCA May Meeting at Sorso’s in the Yacht Club. Come for a relaxed conversation with City Council President Jack Young. We’ll be gathering at 6:30 as usual. Have a Gelato on us and grab a seat. Let’s have a good showing by 7:00 when Council President Young is expected to arrive. Here’s a good chance to express your views and get some perspectives from the Council. Council President Young wants to hear from the community, so let’s not disappoint him.
HARBORVIEW MARINA: Two Sides to Every Story We print one more view on the new management/policies of the Harborview Marina. “As someone who has resided on his boat four-to-seven days per week in Harbor View Marina for the past eight years, I read with interest your March article about the marina’s new management as well as the reaction to it (last) month by Mr. and Mrs. Noren,

n Adult Lessons (a series of 4 weeknight sessions or 2 weekend sessions running consecutively through September.) n Advanced Training (the DSC is an accredited US Sailing school offering Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising, Power Boat and continuing education seminars) n Sailing Opportunities for the Disabled (the DSC offers incredible options with specially-configured boats) n Outreach to City Youth (week-long orientation programs for city kids) n Donate a Boat (get a tax benefit and support the BCF program by donating a larger boat) n Friday Night Socials (you can get a social membership for the camaraderie and an occasional sail)
The DSC goes into the 2010 season with a new Executive Director, Kristen Berry. Kristen is nationally-recognized in the sailing world as a racing competitor, certified instructor and coach, and a champion of ocean conservation. He has been running his own sailing, coaching and corporate team building social functions, and maybe put you to work helping to maintain the substantial fleet. CHECK IT OUT! Don’t wait for a Free Sail date. Drop in at the Office. It’s open all year long, 9 – 5 on weekdays, and during the season there is someone there until 6 on Mon and Tues and on the weekends. How many of you know where the office is? (This may be the “best kept secret.”) It is in the four-story brick building facing Key Highway (1425 Key Highway) at the entrance to the Museum of Industry. From the parking lot go into the small lobby and take the elevator to Level 1. When you step out of the elevator you’re sure to be greeted by a smiling face that may be a member, volunteer or staff person who will be glad to tell you about the program. Now that you know where to go, here are some things to ask about: n Free Sail dates (once a month May – Sep) n Kids’ Camps (week-long sessions at several levels all
business in Annapolis, and his early experience was with professional grassroots and lobbying firms in Washington, DC. He brings all these interests to the Downtown Sailing Center, and it is not surprising that he wants to unsheathe “the best kept secret” and stimulate this community’s awareness and involvement with the DSC. Kristen will be moving from Annapolis to the SoBo peninsula this summer and is looking forward to being part of this community.
Kristen has a great base to start from at the DSC. The
organization has a solid history of growth even during these recent hard economic times. Sailing programs for people with disabilities have expanded almost 700% since 2006 (340 participated in 2009), and the DSC is working with Perry Point Naval Hospital, Wounded Veterans and Walter Reed to try to develop a sailing program for veterans in rehab. The youth programs sailed with more than 2000 last year, and more boats have been added to the fleet. Find out more about all the program opportunities by going to www.downtownsailing.org. We are really fortunate to have such an amazing facility within just a few minutes walk.

LITTLE LEAGUE BALL: Serving the Youth of South Baltimore
may. flowers. www.umlautstudio.com
How many cities can boast an active Little League program within a mile of downtown? Here’s another example of the variety of opportunity available to the residents of the South Baltimore peninsula. It is also an interesting look at the demographics of our community.
This spring more than 300 youth signed up for this season’s
program. That’s a big increase over the norm of 200-250. One third of the applicants were in the age group of 4 – 6 years old, enough to field 12 teams if there had been sufficient adult volunteers. As it is, there are 5 teams each of 4 – 5 year olds and 5 – 6 year olds playing T-Ball. If you have never seen a T-Ball game, you’ll do yourself a favor to drop by Coke Field most any evening or Saturday between now and the end of June. It can be hilarious, heart-wrenching and uplifting to watch all that young energy struggle to get it altogether.
At Coke Field you’ll see a range of talent from these beginners

to a team of Senior Boys up to age 17. Beyond the T-Ball stage are 6 teams of 7/8/9 year olds, 4 teams of 10/11/12 year olds, a Junior traveling team of 13/14 year olds, and a Senior traveling team of 15/16/17 year olds. There is also one girls’ softball team for 9-12 year olds. The baseball teams can include girls as well as boys; the softball team is for girls only. The two older baseball teams and the softball team compete in a Little League district that extends to Southern Maryland; the younger teams play

against local competitors.
All home games are played at Coke Field fronting on Fort
Avenue between Phillips Seafood and the Fire Station. There are three separate playing areas, and there is a full schedule from now until the end of June with weeknight games starting at 6 pm and Saturday games starting at 10 am.
If you are interested there are lots of ways you can help, so
don’t count yourself out just because you have no participants. This is a total volunteer operation, and typical of such endeavors, they can use more helping hands, and you don’t have to be coaching material. If you can operate a lawnmower, you can take a turn mowing the grass on and around the fields, and if you would rather work inside you could probably be helpful keeping the website up-to-date with scheduling information and current
