LIN_

A line is a basic element of art, referring to a continuous mark, made on a surface, by a moving point. A line can define a space, create an outline or pattern, imply movement or texture and allude to mass or volume. The line is absolutely essential in creating art.

“Art, like morality, consists in drawing the line somewhere. - G.K. Chesterton

A contour is the line which defines a form or edge - an outline. Contour drawing is the place where most beginners start, following the visible edges of a shape. The contour describes the outermost edges of a form, as well as dramatic changes of plane within the form. ‘Blind contour drawing’ is when contour drawing is done without looking at the paper.

Horizontal lines are parallel to the horizon (hence the name). They look like they’re lying down, at rest, asleep. They suggest calm and quiet, a relaxed comfort. Horizontal lines can’t fall over. They accentuate width. They’re stable and secure. The convey an absence of conflict, a restful peace. Horizontal lines by their connection to the horizon are associated with earth bound things and idea.

A line or a group of lines either derived from or resembling letter forms and characterized by qualities usually associated with cursive writing, especially that produced with a brush or pen.Artistic, stylized, or elegant handwriting or lettering

Implied line is created when the artist lifts the pen or pencil from the paper, continuing its direction of travel, and then applies pressure again and continues in the same direction. Across the gap in the line is the ‘implied line’, which the mind fills in the gaps.

Curved lines are softer than straight lines. They sweep and turn gracefully between end points. They are less definite and predictable than straight lines. They bend, they change direction. Curved lines express fluid movement. They can be calm or dynamic depending on how much they curve. The less active the curve the calmer the feeling.

Diagonal lines are unbalanced. They are filled with restless and uncontrolled energy. They can appear to be either rising or falling and convey action and motion. Their kinetic energy and apparent movement create tension and excitement. Diagonal lines are more dramatic than either horizontal or vertical lines.

COLOUR

[kuhl-er]

Colour is the element of art that is produced when light, striking an object, is reflected back to the eye.

“Artists can color the sky red because they know it’s blue. Those of us who aren’t artists must color things the way they really are or people might think we’re stupid.” - Jules Feiffer

PRI MARY

1. Primary colours are those that cannot be made from mixing other colors. Instead, primary colours are the source of other colours. The primary colors are red, blue, and yellow.

SEC OND ARY

2. Secondary colours are made by mixing equal parts of primary colours. For instance, green is a secondary color made by mixing yellow and blue. Orange comes from mixing red and yellow. Violet results from mixing blue and red.

3. Complementary Colours are those which are opposite to each other on the color wheel. Complements are red and green, blue and orange, or yellow and violet. Complementary colours neutralize each other when mixed together in equal amounts - making a neutral gray. When a small amount of one colour is mixed into its complement, the resulting color is a less intense, more pleasing version of that colour.

COMPLI MENTARY

WARM

4. Warm colours are the yellows and reds of the color spectrum, associated with fire, heat, sun, and warmer temperatures; also called hot colours

5. Cool colours tend to have a calming effect. At one end of the spectrum they are cold, impersonal, antispectic colours. At the other end the cool colours are comforting and nurturing. Blue, green, and the neutrals white, gray, and silver are examples of cool colours.

TEXTURE

[teks-cher]

Texture is used to describe either the way a three-dimensional work actually feels when touched, or the visual “feel” of a two-dimensional work.

“I aim for an abstract element of a realistic subject and use texture to add interest and suggest depth.”-Margaret Roseman

ACT UAL VIS UAL

Actual texture is the tactile quality of a surface, such as rough, smooth, sticky, fuzzy, soft or slick. A real texture is one you can actually feel with your hand, such as a piece of sandpaper, a wet glass, or animal fur. It also can be created by an artist by doing a collage. Visual texture is a visual quality of a surface. It is the result from painting or drawing as the real texture. Visual texture is an illusion of texture created by an artist. Paint can be manipulated to give the impression of texture, while the paper surface remains smooth and flat.

Trompe l’oeil literally translates from French to mean “fools the eye.” Hard to paint, the trompe l’oeil piece requires meticulous attention to detail on the part of the artist. Proper sizing and every detail, nuance of light and gradation of color must be skillfully incorporated in order to make the two-dimensional work appear to be three-dimensional.

TROMPE ABS IN_ L’ŒIL TRACT VENT’D A texture devised from the appearance of an actual surface but rearranged and/or simplified by the artist to satisfy the demands of the artwork.

A created texture whose only source is the artist’s imagination. It generally produces a decorative pattern and should not be confused with abstract texture

SHAPE

[sheyp] Shape is an enclosed space, the boundaries of which are defined by other elements of art (i.e.: lines, colors, values, textures, etc.).

“You’re in pretty good shape for the shape you are in.” -Dr.Seuss

GEO

Geometric Shapes are circles, rectangles, squares, triangles and so on - have the clear edges one achieves when using tools to create them. Most geometric shapes are made by humans, though crystals are also considered to be geometric despite the fact that they are made in nature.

OR GAN IC

Organic shapes are shapes with a natural look and a flowing and curving appearance. Organic shapes and forms are typically irregular or asymmetrical. These are associated with things from the natural world, like plants and animals.

BIO

Bimorphic Shapes resemble or suggest the forms of living organisms.

S P A C E

[speys] Space refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. Space can be positive (white or light) or negative (black or dark), open or closed, shallow or deep and twodimensional or three-dimensional. Sometimes space isn’t actually within a piece, but the illusion of it is.

“Space is the breath of art.” -Frank Lloyd Wright

Positive Space is the area or space on a painting in which is occupied by the subject. An example of a positive space may be a dog in a still life painting. The opposite of a positive space is a negative space.

+

Negative Space is a compositional tool used in both two- and three-dimensional work. The simplest way to describe it is as: “space where other things are not present.

--

Shallow Space refers to a 2D flat space that may have width and density, but contains only a limited amount of depth.

Open Space is continuous area or expanse which is free, available, or unoccupied.

SHA OP LLOW E N Deep Space refers to a 2D or 3D space that may have width and density, but contains an extent amount of depth. Usually the viewer is incapable of visually meeting the actual background.

A Closed Space confined area within a work either 2D or 3D.IIn many cases there is little to no egative space available.

DEEP DEEP CLOSED

VALUE

[val路yoo]

Value refers to the lightness or darkness. Value becomes critical in a work which has no colors other than black, white, and a gray scale.
