Galeri Presents
Un Llais
(One Voice)
Thursday, 24.01.13 // 19.30
Galeri, together with the European Union Chamber Orchestra, commissioned the composer Pwyll ap Sion and the chaired poet Twm Morys to compose a cantata in Welsh and in Cornish. Sevi/Syfi is a love-story between a young woman and a young man, but also between two countries, drawing on a myth, common in Cornwall and in Wales, about the land that disappeared under the sea: Lethesow in Cornwall and Cantre’r Gwaelod in Wales. The old Cornish lady in the songs reminisces, with the present events taking place through the medium of the Welsh language. The songs reminds us that this is an eternal story, and that it is possible to reclaim the lost land. This unique cycle of songs, Sevi/Syfi will be performed by Swansea born soprano (and Celtic languages Cambridge Scholar) Elin Manahan Thomas together with the European Union Chamber Orchestra. Elin will also join the Orchestra for a joyful programme of popular classics including Grieg, Elgar, Mozart and Haydn. This work was commissioned by Galeri in parternship with the European Union Chamber Orchestra. This was made possible with funding through Beyond Borders from the PRS for Music Foundation, Creative Scotland, Arts Council Northern Ireland, Arts Council Wales and Colwinston Trust.
Sevi/Syfi will also be performed at ‘The Hall for Cornwall’ in Truro, January 31.

John Helliwell + Huw Warren trio
TONIC: MUSICAL LANDSCAPES
Yet again that icon of 80s and 90s television comedy, Phil Cool, is on tour with a new show - and with sell out houses wherever he goes it is clear that he at least is recession proof.

IN THE HANDS OF PIANIST IWAN LLEWELYN-JONES

His award winning television shows have obtained cult status through YouTube, proving that his comedy is as contemporary and hilarious today as it has ever been. With the world’s most flexible face he is a stand-up chameleon and professor of Faceology - he can be George W Bush one minute, Paul McCartney the next, then Bill Clinton and later Bugs Bunny!
John is best known as the saxophonist in Supertramp, but has had a lifelong interest in jazz including leading his own group Creme Anglais.

Waking Exploits:
Love and Money A play by Dennis Kelly Directed by Ryan Romain
Tuesday, 23.04.13 // 19.30 Debt. Desire. Love and money. Jess loves David. Jess loves credit. Believing happiness can be bought in a world of easy finance and materialism, possessions become irresistible. But at what cost? Jess and David’s blend of love and money is killing their relationship, their future, and them. Funny yet heart wrenching, Kelly’s dark comedy portrays a dislocated view of the world we live in, the risks we face, and the lengths we go in search of happiness.

Gai Toms (+ Band)
Friday, 26.04.13 // 19.30
Blaenau Ffestiniog singer songwriter Gai Toms returns to Galeri, this time performing songs from his latest, genre hopping, album ‘Bethel’, released in winter 2012, a Welsh language classic.
Everest mountaineer Stephen Venables marks the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of the world’s highest mountain with a new talk celebrating the history of this iconic mountain. In 1988 Venables wrote his own extraordinary chapter in the Everest story. With a team of just four climbers, he pioneered a new route up the gigantic East Face, reaching the summit alone, without supplementary oxygen - the first Briton to do so. Caught out by darkness on the descent, he survived a record night alone in the open, without a tent or a sleeping bag, at 28,000 feet.
Saturday, 27.04.13 // 19.30
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Gai and band in a theatrical setting... be prepared for the odd surprise! www.gaitoms.com
25 years on, Venables weaves his account of that epic expedition into the bigger Everest story.

ANDY PARSONS: I’VE GOT A SHED
Michelangelo Drawing Blood
Wednesday, 01.05.13 // 20.00
Friday, 03.05.13 // 19.30
To date Andy Parsons has done three sell-out National tours and in 2009 released his debut DVD ‘Britain’s Got Idiots’, which was followed up by ‘Gruntled’ in 2011.
Michelangelo: painter, sculptor, architect, engineer and poet – the original, and perhaps ultimate, Renaissance man.
Andy started in TV on Spitting Image becoming one of the main writers before embarking on a stand-up career which has led to such shows as Mock The Week and Live at the Apollo. This, his fourth show, is his favourite yet – come and get your dopamine fix. Andy Parsons – coming to a theatre near you – and then throwing his satnav out the window and phoning for directions.
Delve into the forces that drove his genius - an obsession with human anatomy, a passionate response to the male body and an equally intense Christian faith. 21st century theatre meets 16th century culture as three male performers bring to life the fluid twists and turns of Michelangelo’s drawings accompanied by music composed by Charlie Barber and performed live on Renaissance instruments.
