On the occasion of our first IFPDA New York Fine Art Print Fair, Galerie Maximillian is pleased to present an important collection of editions by Peter Doig. This body of work has been acquired over the past 12 years and includes the artist’s most iconic imagery. Peter Doig is one of the most important representational painter/printmakers working today. His art is characterized by a combination of figures and landscapes exuding a captivating, dreamlike quality. His paintings consistently sell for between 15 and 25 million dollars and are in the permanent collections of important museums worldwide. Doig’s retrospective at the Tate Britain in 2008 sealed his reputation as one of Great Britain’s leading artists. Original printmaking is an integral part of his overall practice. Sometimes, the subject of an etching precedes a painting and other times it follows the composition of a completed work. Doig uses a wide variety of printmaking techniques including etching, aquatint, photogravure, hardground, softground, spitbite, sugarlift and others. His approach to printmaking has evolved from small, intimate subjects to larger, more expressive works using painterly strokes and washes. These rich and captivating techniques, executed directly onto the printmaking surface by the artist, result in some of the most compelling prints created over the past 20 years. This collection features some of his earliest print projects including Ten Etchings, Grasshopper, Blizzard ‘77 and 100 Years Ago. An avid skier, many subjects are inspired by childhood ski trips in Canada. In other works his ideas are informed by images from film, travel magazines, postcards and his own photographs. The most recent print projects are a visual diary interpreting his daily life on the Island of Trinidad where Doig moved with his family in 2002. Since 1997, Galerie Maximillian, located in Aspen, Colorado, has been an internationally recognized dealer of important 19th century, modern and contemporary fine prints. We hope you enjoy this exhibition of work by Peter Doig that represents only a small portion of our extensive inventory.
