Galileo...where the students are stars!

G ALILEO

Dear Galileo Parents and Scholars, We have exciting times in front of us. Our scholars are working hard and improving everyday as evidenced by over 80 percent of our scholars having a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Our last project night was outstanding. Thanks for attending and for your support in spite of the inclement weather. At the current time, we are interviewing our new 6th grade scholars for next year. If you know scholars who would like to attend Galileo, please encourage them to get their applications and permits in right away. We are projecting another 250 incoming 6th graders. Thank you for your support at Wasson High school at the school reutilization meeting. Our community had the largest contingency of community members. We expect to be open as Galileo has grown and done a tremendous job of educating our scholars. As everyone is aware, our CSAP tests are scheduled for early March, and we are making sure our students are prepared. Thank you for all your support during these trying times, and please call if you have any questions or ideas to help us improve. Sincerely, Rusty Moomey Principal

GO BULLDOGS!

GALILEO SUPPORT SQUAD: GS2 PTA We hope you’ll join our PTA in helping to build the best middle school experience possible for you and your scholar. We are all working together — parents, community, school and students — as active participants in the life of the school, where everyone feels welcomed, valued and connected to each other and to what our scholars are learning in class. The GS2 PTA offers volunteer opportunities to serve from the officer level to occasional volunteer. PTA is proud to sponsor two exciting events in February! We still need more volunteers for the Galileo Open House during the school day on 2/12; your scholar received information about this event on 2/2 — be sure to look for the flyer. Our next event is “A Taste of Black History” from 4-6 pm prior to the Community Night activities held on 2/23. We will serve a plate with several snack-size portions of traditional dishes to sample. Pricing is set at $3 for 6th grade and above and $2 for children. Current plans will limit ticket sales to 100 plates. Look for details soon. Help us reach our membership goals by 3/31 as we stand a good chance to win a laptop from the National PTA! Cost of membership is only $7.00 and is good through 9/30/09. Click the PTA link on the school web site to see all the latest content, including officer contact information and current volunteer opportunities. We need you!

HEART HEALTHY HARVEST OF THE MONTH:

Avocado

In order to “grow healthy students”, School District 11 Food and Nutrition Services has developed a program called Colorado School’s Harvest of the Month. This program was originally created and promoted by the California Nutrition Network and the California 5 a Day Campaign. We have tweaked the program to meet the needs of school districts across the state of Colorado! Each month a featured fruit or vegetable will appear on the school menus and will become the focus for nutrition education topics (in newsletters like this!). For the month of February, avocado is the star. Let’s learn a little more about this nutritious Harvest item. The avocado (Persea americana), is also known as palta or aguacate (Spanish), Avocado is a fruit with a lot to offer. Avocados are known for being high in unsaturated (or “good”) fat. And an avocado contains vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin and beta carotene, which forms vitamin A. Avocados come in literally all shapes and sizes, ranging from round to pear-shaped. The skin can be thick or thin, green or black, smooth or rough. When ripe, an avocado will be soft but firm. The rich, buttery taste of an avocado goes with everything from salsas to soups and salads to steak. Avocados discolor rapidly once cut, so add it to your dish at the last minute with a touch of lemon or lime juice to prevent discoloration. To speed the ripening process at home, place several avocados in a paper bag and leave them at room temperature for two to four days. Ripe avocados can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. http://www.eatright.org/cps/rde/xchg/ada/hs.xslhome_9155_ENU_HTML.htm
