Το PETROSPHERE είναι μία ανταλλαγή μεταξύ 5 καλλιτεχνών που ζουν και εργάζονται στη Γλασκώβη, και 5 καλλιτεχνών που ζουν και εργάζονται στην Αθήνα. Οι δουλειές τους καλύπτουν ένα ευρύ φάσμα εκφραστικών μέσων όπως γλυπτική, εγκαταστάσεις, δράσεις, έργα σε χαρτί, τυπογραφία και φωτογραφία. Οι 10 καλλιτέχνες δημιουργήσαν έργα ειδικά για τον χώρο του πρώην Ξενοδοχείου Γαλήνη. Η έκθεση εκτείνεται πέραν του διαμορφωμένου εκθεσιακού χώρου μέσω δράσεων και μίας εκστρατείας αφισοκόλλησης, που ανταποκρίνεται στο ειδικό αρχιτεκτονικό, πολιτικό και καλλιτεχνικό περικείμενο της πόλης. Τόσο η Γλασκώβη όσο και η Αθήνα διατηρούν μία ενεργή παρουσία στα διεθνή καλλιτεχνικά δρώμενα ενώ θεωρούνται ‘καλλιτεχνικές κυψέλες’ με έντονη την αίσθηση της κοινότητας, την αναζήτηση της καινοτομίας, αποτελούμενες από άτομα ιδιαίτερης νοοτροπίας και ιδιοσυγκρασίας. Το PETROSPHERE επιχειρεί να εδραιώσει αυτούς τους δεσμούς μέσω της ανταλλαγής, φέρνοντας κοντά διαφορετικές καλλιτεχνικές πρακτικές και αντιλήψεις ώστε να δημιουργηθεί ένας ζωηρός, ευφραδής ακόμα και αντιφατικός εικαστικός διάλογος, ριζωμένος στην ιδιαιτερότητα του φυσικού χώρου που εδρεύουν οι καλλιτέχνες. Το PETROSPHERE θα συνεχιστεί με μία δεύτερη έκθεση της δουλειάς των 10 καλλιτεχνών στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Τέχνης της Γλασκώβης (Gi), τον Απρίλιο του 2012. PETROSPHERE is an exchange between 5 artists based in Glasgow, and 5 artists based in Athens, working across the media of sculpture, installation, performance, works on paper, printmaking and photography. All 10 artists develop new work specifically for the Galini Hotel, Athens. The exhibition extends beyond this appropriated gallery space through live performance, video screening, and a flyposting campaign, responding to the specific built, political, and artistic context of the city. Both Glasgow and Athens maintain an energetic presence in the international art world, and are respected as artistic hubs with a strong sense of community, innovation, attitude, and confidence. PETROSPHERE consolidates these links through exchange; bringing together different practices and perspectives to create a voluble, fluent, even contrary artistic dialogue, rooted in the specificity of the physical places that the artists occupy. PETROSPHERE will be continued through a second exhibition of the 10 artists’ work at Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Art (Gi), Scotland, in April 2012.
