FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FINANCIAL AID My family is middle-class. Will I qualify for financial aid? Many students from middle-class families do, in fact, qualify for financial aid. Several factors other than income are considered when determining financial need.

Is it worth taking out a student loan for college? Pursuing a college education is a valuable investment. Research shows that a bachelor’s degree leads to significantly higher earnings over a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Why should I apply for financial aid if Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) will pay for my education? Most VR agencies require that you complete the financial aid process in addition to the VR process.

What is FAFSA, and is it required? FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is required as part of your application.

Do I or my family need to pay for any educational expenses if I qualify for financial aid? You and/or your family are expected to contribute to educational costs. If payments are not affordable, there are several federal loan programs that can assist you with educational expenses not covered by grants, scholarships and VR. Will I receive the same amount every year? The amount may vary from year to year depending on your financial circumstances.

U.S. CITIZENS/ PERMANENT RESIDENTS

What if my financial situation changes after I enroll? If your financial situation changes, it is important to communicate this with the Financial Aid office. If I receive SSI or SSDI, how does this affect my financial aid? This is looked at on a case-by-case basis. Contact the Financial Aid office for more information. When should I complete my FAFSA? You should complete your FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1.

If your parents have claimed you as a dependant on their tax filings, they should fill out the application for financial aid. If not, you should fill out the application for financial aid. Here are some tips for establishing a strong relationship with your VR counselor: • Meet with your VR counselor as soon as possible if you haven’t already. Make sure you have career goals to present to your VR counselor. • Discuss your expectations and goals. Decide how and when you will communicate with each other. Make sure to get a copy of your individualized rehabilitation plan for services. • Get a copy of your VR authorizations, if possible. This is your evidence that your VR agency has agreed to support your education at Gallaudet and will help you with your financial planning.
