FOREWORD The presented catalogue of rare books, atlases, and maps is no. 33 published by Galleri Bygdøy Allé – Kunstantikvariat PAMA AS in Oslo. Since the first in 1999 no catalogue has contained this many important early atlases or rare illustrated books of Norway. Two Norwegian private collections are the core of the catalogue, including extremely unusual material of high international standard. Most atlases originate from an old family collection sold by the descendants, while the majority of the plate books of Norway previously belonged to Eiler H. Schiøtz and his son Cato Schiøtz. Both father and son Schiøtz have a long time passion and an extreme knowledge about rare books related to Norway. Many of the books offered are «The definitive copies»and are the most famous excisting with strong provenance. They will add quality and importance to any ambitious collection. Book collecting should create much fun but could sometimes challenge you and will occasionally force the collector to make serious priorities. «Which copy should I wait for»,- I am sure most collectors have tasted this experience and touched the question. I am convinced the catalogue will contribute to complete a few gaps in some already important collections. The catalogue «The Mirror of the World» is divided in two language parts. It makes sense to catalogue the early international atlases in English. The «Itineraria Norvegica» section includes several objects which are in international demand, but mainly deals with Norwegian conditions, and subsequently this material is catalogued in Norwegian. A UNIQUE COPY BOUND WITH THE TEXT OF THE ROME EDITION 1490 REPLACING THE REGER TEXT, INCLUDING A PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED STATE OF THE MODERN MAP OF SPAIN WITH THE TITLE PRINTED AT THE TOP THE CORRECT WAY 1. JOHANN REGER [“Cosmographia” – (translated by J. Angelus, edited by Nicolaus Germanus, reprinted from Lienhart Holle’s first Ulm edition of 1482)] Complete atlas with 32 woodcut maps (31 double-page and 1 single-page of Taprobana), the accompanied text (in front) and register (at the back) is replaced by the complete text section from the Rome edition 1490 of Ptolemy’s “Geographia”. All maps coloured by a contemporary hand in the typical colours of the 1486 edition. Folio, 40,8x28,8cm. Late 19th century (?) half calf binding on boards, in a slip-case ULM (Johann Reger) 1486 A COMBINED MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE MASTERPIECE IN THE HISTORY OF CARTOGRAPHY AS WELL AS PRINTING. A FINE, UNPRETENTIOUS COPY COMPLETE WITH ALL THE 32 INCUNABULA MAPS INCLUDING THE FIRST WORLD MAP IN THE HISTORY DEPICTING SCANDINAVIA AND THE NORTH. Only four atlases with maps based on Claudius Ptolemy (c. 90 – 168 a. d.) and his coordinates were printed during the fifteenth century. The basic 27 Ptolemy maps in the first three (Bologna 1477, Rome 1478, and Berlinghieri’s in Florence c. 1482 which also had four new additional “modern maps”,) were copper printed. In 1482 Lienhart Holle in Ulm published a revised edition with the reworking of the Ptolemaic corpus by the cartographer Nicolaus Germanus Donis. The maps are the first printed from woodblocks and was the first atlas printed outside Italy. The general projection used in the map construction is the trapezoidal. The Ulm atlas was extended with five additional “modern” maps, in most copies bound as the last five maps in the atlas. One of these was the first printed map of Scandinavia and the North. For this edition the traditional Ptolemaic world map was altered to include new knowledge about Northern Europe. The region is breaking through the traditional map image at the top. The “new information” was probably based on manuscript material by Nicolaus Germanus Donis, the important contributor to the Ulm edition. The atlas was the first book printed by L. Holle but he probably over-extended himself with its production and his business went bankrupt shortly after the publication. The remaining sheets, the woodblocks and the types passed to Johann Reger in Ulm, who reissued the work in 1486 in supposedly 1000 copies.

For the first time the artist responsible for the woodcutting identifies himself with his signature on the world map as Johannes of Armsheim, “Insculptum est per Iohanne Schnitzer de Armszheim”. As his sign he incorporated a backwards N into the woodcut text on each map. The Ulm edition is also the first to print the accompanying text on the verso of the map to which it refers following the layout of many manuscripts. When reissued in 1486 the descriptive text on the back of the maps was reset, the borders have been omitted and initials altered.

UNRECORDED VARIANT AND STATE ON THE MODERN MAP OF SPAIN THE TITLE IS PRINTED ABOVE THE MAP IN CORRECT POSITION

For the 1486 edition new woodcut headings were added above the maps. In this process the letters on the “modern” map of Spain were placed up-side down along the bottom of the map. In our copy however the heading is printed above the map as probably the original intention was by the printer. (In personal correspondence with Tony Campbell in March 2015, he indicatated that he had not noted ever seeing this variant and kindly added, “It seems that you have found a new rarity!”). Another important feature of the Ulm editions is the introduction of the publisher’s colouring on maps. Maps from 1482 usually have a rich blue colour in the sea which was replaced with a soft brown colour in 1486 as seen on our maps. Why our copy is replaced by the text and register originally published in Rome four years later in 1490 we can only speculate. But it could lead us to believe that it has something to do with the correction of the heading above “Tabula Moderna Hispania”. Compared to Lienhart Holle’s 1482 edition Johann Reger did certain additions as the “Registrum alphabeticum” and “De locis et mirabilibus mundi”. These were inserted in the Rome editions of 1490 and 1507 – 08.

The complete set of maps in the Ulm atlas might appear bound in different order. In our copy the “Tabula Moderna” maps are placed behind their respective “old maps”. Most known copies have these maps bound in the end. The Ulm maps are individually rare and highly desirable among collectors, THE COMPLETE ATLAS IS THE MAIN CORE IN ANY IMPORTANT BOOK OR MAP COLLECTION IN THE WORLD. They are also highly important works of art manufactured in the fifteenth century, the age between the medieval and renaissance tradition. Short collation: 60 leaves text (from a2), 32 double-page maps, complete (last map “Duodecima Asie” is one-page but text on the right-hand side of the map), 56 leaves (from A2 including one blank leaf) (Full text collation on request).

Condition: The first text section with a water stain in upper margin, more distinct in the beginning. The world map with margins on three sides, touching the border at bottom. Two minor tears on both sides of the centerfold bottom, backed. Some contemporary ink spots. Map 2 “Prima Europa” has two small tears at bottom, one c. 12cm at the top and a crease at left-hand side with a crack. The tears at bottom follow until map no. 5, “Tercia Europa”, and affecting a few maps later in the book. “Tabula Moderna Italie” with a 6cm crack, three sides strengthened. “Quarta Affrice Tabula” with a crack along the left border. In general some browning and occasional marginal water stains throughout. Some discolouration.

AMONG THE ARTISTS IS THE YOUNG ALBRECHT DÜRER. INCLUDING THE EARLY PRINTED DESCRIPTION OF NORWAY AND THE ARCTIC ACCOMPANYING A DOUBLE-PAGE MAP. 2 xylographic title-pages (the second cut until text and re-margined, the firs with a margin damage restored), 19 unnumbered (register), CCLXVI (266) including three blank, 5 unnumbered “Sarmacia”, CCLXVII-CCXCIX (leaves 267-299), (lacking last blank as is often the case). The double-page map of the North bound in before “Sarmacia”. First edition published by Anton Koberger in July 1493 six months before a German edition. Anton Koberger was at the time the most important publisher in Germany. He also manufactured bindings for his books, and our copy might well be one of those. The book is regarded as an encyclopedia, a history book mostly seen through a medieval mind from the creation to c. 1492. Today the book is naturally admired for the more than 1800 woodcuts printed from 645 woodblocks and the two maps (the Ptolemaic World map and the map of Scandinavia by Münzer after Cusanus) illustrating the text.

Specially valued are all the town views (some examples are München, Lübeck, Köln, Augsburg, Wien, Nürnberg, Salzburg, Ulm, Prag, Basel, Strassbourg and Venice) among many they are the first printed views of the cities depicted. The woodblocks were cut by Michel Wohlgemuth and his stepson William Pleydenwurff (identified in the colophon), but recent scholarship has attributed many of the woodcuts to Pleydenwurff’s young disciple (and godson of the printer Anton Koberger) Albrecht Dürer, making this Dürer‘s first illustrated book. These cuts bear a remarkably strong resemblance to his famous woodcut series “Apocalypse”. The book is of great importance to Scandinavia and specially Norway. In addition to the second printed map of the area, pages CCLXXXII-verso and next leaf-recto have an early description of the three Scandinavian countries. This must be the first printed description of Norway connected with a map and tells about a frozen part of the world. Condition: Some dampstaining in the register section. A few marginal tears with old repairs including one in lower margin of the world map. Some occasional browning, but in general a clean copy. The map of Scandinavia and the Northern Region is in an unusually good condition.

Folio, 29,2x21,2cm. 347 numbered leaves, 17 illustrated plates comprising a total of 58 woodcuts from 29 blocks. 7 illustrations are full-page. Rubricated throughout, capitals stroked in red. All edges painted red (worn). 17th century full calf, title on spine (spine worn, corners bumped, front cover hinge strengthened, later front and endpaper) NUREMBERG (A. Koberger) 12. July 1502 A FINE COPY OF FIRST GERMAN EDITION OF THE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE SCANDINAVIAN LITERATURE OF THE MIDDLE AGES. The famous woodcut illustrations were used in Anton Koberger’s first Latin edition 1500 and they have previously by some scholars been attributed to Albrecht Dürer. Today they are assumed to have been cut in Dürer’s workshop, possibly after the master’s sketches. A tall copy. Some contemporary marginal notations, one marginal repair on leaf n-vi.

Several woodcut initial letters plus numerous repeats. Full vellum with black label in calf (later paste-downs and front and end-papers) STRASBOURG (J. Grüninger) 1525 A GOOD COPY OF THE SECOND LAURENZ FRIES EDITION EDITED BY JOHANN HUTTICH WITH WOODCUT BORDERS VERSO ATTRIBUTED TO HANS HOLBEIN. Most of the maps and other woodblocks were based on Martin Waldeseemuller 1513 -20 but smaller in size and frequently in half-trapeziodal shape compared to the previous editions. First edition is 1522 and later editions are 1535 and 1541.

Among the three world maps we find the nautical map dated 1522 with rhumb lines, and the map is amongst the earliest to include the name «America». The watermarks on the pages of text and maps show the anchor in a circle. According to Josef Meder «Albrecht Dürer» (Vienna 1932), this watermark is dated to 1524, and is found in paper used by Dürer (Meder 348).

Map 45, 46/47, and 49 «Orbis Typus Universalis» damaged along the centrefolds with repairs and areas filled in, mostly affected is no. 49 with additional repairs to lower margin. Lower margin on illustration leaves 69 and 70 extended with minor loss to left hand-side windheads. Map 27 Ptolemy world remargined along top margin, map 37 along lower margin affecting the last printed line repaired.

Woodcut device on title, 27 double-page maps of the Ancient World, 22 double-page maps of the Modern World, and one full-page map of «Lotharingia» on verso map 46, together 50 maps most with text verso. 19th century elegant calf with four brass clasps, spine in six compartments, one with title (a few scratches and surface flaws) LYON (Melchior and Gaspar Trechsel) 1535 A TALL COPY OF THE FIRST SERVETUS EDITION OF PTOLEMY. Same maps from identical blocks as above. Michael Villanovanus (Servetus) did a revision of the text by the brothers Trechsel (see previous entry), but unfortunatly he kept the passage about the Holy Land which Pirckheimer previously had written, and this was used against Servetus at his trial in 1553. Several copies of the 1535 atlas are said to been destroyd on Calvin’s order at the execution of Servetus for heresy in 1553.

Condition: Old notations on title-page. A large waterstain through the book. Marginal strengthenings on maps 23, 27 – 32. Lacking leaf a2 (page 3 – 4)

Small-folio, 27,5x19,5cm Title-page (I), text verso, II – CX, (4pp), 1 blank, 8 double-page woodcut maps. The text of Scandinavia and the North is covered by pages LXXXIIIIv – CXr “Schondia”. Contemporary patterned calf, paper titles on spine and back cover (worn, lacking the ties) STRASBOURG (apud Petrum Opilionem) 1532 THE IMPORTANT BOOK WITH EXTENSIVE DESCRIPTIONS OF PALESTINE, SCANDINAVIA AND THE NORTH. A TALL, EXCELLENT AND CRISP COPY IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING. The humanist and theologian Jacob Ziegler was born in Bavaria and spent much of his time travelling around in Europe. In the 1520’s he lived in Rome, and here he was influenced by religious people and theologians from many countries, many escaping from their home country because of the Reformation. Among the people he met are the four Scandinavian church officials: Archbishop Erik Valkendorf, Archbishop of Trondheim, Olav Engelbrektsson, Archbishop of Uppsala, Johannes Magnus and Bishop Peder Månsson. They gave Ziegler valuable geographical information about the North as well as knowledge about the people and the inhabitants of the region. The main part of the book and seven maps of eight describe Palestine with corrections and additions to earlier sources like Ptolemy and the Bible. The rest of the book is devoted to Scandinavia and the North. This part is perhaps mostly notable for the accompanying map of the area “Octava Galleri Bygdøy Allé - Kunstantikvariat Pama

Tabula Continet Cheronnesum Schondiam, Regna autem potasium, Norduegiam, Sueciam, Gothiam, Finlandiam, Gentem Lapones”. The map sets a new standard after the Ulm map 1482 and is a key map in the history of cartography of the North. For the first time the axis of Scandinavia is running north – south. The peninsula of Finland is not only distinctly depicted by Ziegler but the name Finland (“Finlandia”) is for the first time introduced on a printed map. In the text Ziegler gives an account of Greenland and the Scandinavian settlements. The American continent is melted together with Greenland and the name “Terra Bacallaos” – “Land of Codfish” on the southern part represents Newfoundland. Since Greenland is still connected to Finnmark, there is no indication of a possible Northeast route. Among the place names lying off the coast are “Stappen” (by Gjesvær), “Saniam” (Senja), “Andanes”, and “Fosen”. On the mainland below “Laponia” we see “VVardhus Castrum”. One of many treasures in the National Library in Oslo is a manuscript codex of Ziegler’s book written by Martin Richter, Ziegler’s permanent secretary. It contents 380 pages and three maps including the map of Scandinavia. A second edition 1536 is almost identical apart from a different title and small text changes. 7. SIGMUND VON HERBERSTEIN (1486 – 1566) “Commentari della Moscovia et partmente della Russia” Complete book, 4to, 20,3x14cm. Original hand-coloured woodcut arms on title-page, a folding map in original colours and 6 full page woodcuts. 8pp, folded woodcut map in contemporary hand-colouring, 26,5x39cm, 7pp index, “Tavola”, 180pp, 4pp illustrations, 2pp text, 2pp illustrations. Contemporary full vellum, old title in ink on spine. An old label in ink in Italian pasted on to the front fly leaf (some worming, a small piece of vellum torn between back cover and spine, front hinge weak and partly open) VENICE 1550 THE EARLIEST OBTAINABLE PRINTED ACCOUNT OF RUSSIA. A FINE, UNTOUCHED COPY WITH THE LARGE FOLDING MAP BY GIACOMO GASTALDI IN ORIGINAL COLOURS. This rare book was published in Italian one year after the (unobtainable) first Latin edition of 1549. The folding map by Gastaldi is larger and far more detailed than that of 1549. Sigmund Herberstein was a diplomat from the Austrian Imperial Court who was sent to Russia twice between 1516 and 1526. He was granted audiences with the highest authorities of Russia who gave him a wealth of information used in the book. His knowledge about Russia at the time would have been far beyond that of any other Westerner. The book also includes a chapter of a voyage from 1496. Gregory Istoma together with “gesandten” David from the King of Denmark, sailed from the White Sea to Trondheim. From Trondheim to Bergen they are supposed to have used reindeer. When Abraham Ortelius spring 1570 was ready to publish his first complete world atlas he had few ideas how many copies he was able to sell and subsequently should print. On June 17th 1570 Ortelius delivered 40 copies from the first printing of the atlas to C. Plantin. Three more printings would follow during 1570 – 71 all in Latin. The three succeeding issues have small changes such as the number of names in the “Catalogus auctorum” and minor textual alterations. “The Theatrum” set a totally new standard of books with maps. It was still 25 years to go before Gerard Mercator introduced the word “Atlas” in the cartography. The maps in “The Theatrum” were printed in a uniform format and style accompanied by an engraved title. Also a new custom was Ortelius’ introduction of a catalogue of the authors whose source material was essential for making the maps. Ortelius paid the unusual courtesy of acknowledging them. This very first Ortelius atlas was the beginning of an adventure of business with several thousands of atlas copies produced until 1648. Condition: Map one “Orbis Terrarum” with marginal damages repaired and with extensions, the lower right corner mostly affected. The second map “Novus Orbis” age-toned and a marginal damp stain in the left, right, and lower margin. Map seven “Hispania”: The number “28” is erased and substituted with the correct “7”.

FIRST LATIN EDITION OF THE EARLIEST PRINTED SEA ATLAS, RARE! The “Spieghel der Zeevaerdt” was published in Dutch 1583 – 84 by C. Plantin in Leiden and immediately created an international demand. Using the same types as Plantin, Raphelengus had his edition also printed in Leiden, but in Latin in 1586. The charts set the standard for navigation at sea learned through Waghenaers own experience through decades. The charts are admired for the artistic performance combined with their practical purpose, to lead a ship safely from one port to another. Condition: The chart of Europe folded as usual, with two small tears, the margins unevenly trimmed sometimes affecting the engraved grade scale. A severe damp stain, worse in the beginning and towards the end, affecting both upper corners, sometimes resulting in damages into the map area restored. The charts are in a strong impression and except light occasional browning, in a clean delicate and strong performance.

THE DUTCH BARENTS EXPEDITIONS TO THE ARCTIC REGIONS 1594 – 97 Gerrit de Veer’s account related to the three Dutch voyages to the north – east regions of the Arctic

The final achievement of the three so-called “Barents Expeditions” has placed them among the most famous travels and explorations in the history. In command was Willem Barents (1549 – 97), a cartographer by trade. Through sailings to Spain and the Mediterranean and a compilation of an atlas of the Mediterranean region, he was already an experienced explorer and a map specialist when he set the course suggested by Petrus Plancius with the hope of finding the Northeast Passage with three ships in June 1594. Barents reached the west coast of Novaja Zemlja before the ice conditions forced them to turn back. What are the underlying causes that made men spend huge sums of money and other resources in finding a North East sailing route to Asia under these partly inhuman conditions? During the end of the 16th century The Republic of the United Netherlands gradually developed into one of the superpowers in Europe both economically and culturally. Trade was booming and several trading stations were established in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. To avoid the problems and challenges with the Hispanics and the Portuguese, and to reduce the sailing distance to Asia, the idea of finding an alternative north-east route became a topic of priority. The project involved a huge number of people and institutions, private and public. Among the key persons were the cartographers and the map publishers. Maps, charts, globes and instruments by Petrus Plancius, Cornelis Claesz and Gerhard Mercator to mention some of the most important makers were carefully examined and studied. They were all convinced that there was an open sea along a northeast route, but the main challenge was the ice situation. But when the sun is shining 24 hours during the summer in Siberia does it not make sense that the ice will melt? Even though the first voyage of Barents did not reach its ultimate goal it was regarded as a success. A second voyage followed in 1595. Again they had to turn back before they achieved their mission. Unexpected weather conditions had left the Kara Sea frozen.

A third attempt was made. In May 1596 two ships were outfitted. The captains were Jan Rijp and Jacob van Heemskeerk Willem Barents was the commander. During the first weeks both Spitsbergen and Bear Island were dicovered. On July 1st there was a disagreement about the setting of the course between Barents /Van Heemskeerk and Rijp. Barents decided to continue northeast as Rijp headed due north. Barents and Heemskeerk and the crew of 15 were soon facing serious problems with the ice and the ship was frozen into the pack ice on the eastern side of Novaja Zemlja. By using wood material from the ship Barents and his men built a winter camp. In the catalogue we will see several examples of illustrations from these tremendously harsh living conditions. In July 1597 the men left the camp on the journey home in an open vessel heading for the Kola Peninsula. Of the 17 men spending the winter at Novaja Zemlja five died before they were rescued. Barents himself was unfortunately one of those. Immediately after the survivors returned to Holland a large number of books and maps describing the expedition were published. The fantastic story became a best-seller and created interest all over Europe. The two most important contributors were Jan Huygen Van Linschoten (accompanied Barents on his first and second voyage) and Gerrit de Veer (participated on the second voyage and was one of the “winter-men” in 1596/97). Barents’s own sketches for a North Pole map or more precisely a map of the Arctic Region, was corrected and transferred onto a copperplate and printed in 1598. hemisphere map “Orbis Terrarum nova et accuratissima tabula” and Pieter van den Keere’s Mercator projection map “Nova Totius Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula”. Further follow maps of the continent of Europe (signed by Visscher), the Arctic (The North Pole map is unique to the Pitt edition), Scandinavia including the local country maps (among them the newly engraved F. Lamb map of Norway), Russia and Poland. Also unique to the atlas by Pitt is the double-page plate showing scenes of the Sami people in winter and summer with accompanying text. Many of the copperplates used for the Pitt atlas were old Janssonius plates acquired by Pitt through Janssonius’ son-in-law Waesberghe. Some copies of the atlas were illuminated in the exclusive colouring of the publisher. Our copy was apparently commissioned by Thomas Langton who wanted a deluxe copy in gold. All maps are ruled in double-red along the margins, this was a peculiar British form of decoration used to improve the impression of the book. Some maps are laid down on canvas. Only a few maps with some oxidizing cracks caused by the green colour, these imperfections have been professionally restored. The double hemisphere world is lightly rubbed along centerfold. Francesco Negri was an Italian clergyman who travelled in Scandinavia in 1664 – 65 and wrote many letters describing the native people of the North. He was also the first after Olaus Magnus to mention skiing. He first travelled through Sweden to Denmark where he met King Fredrik III, and then along the Norwegian coast from Bergen – Trondheim (including a visit to Østraat and Ove Bjelke) – Bjørnør – Næø – Torghatten – Rødø – Malstrømmen. He was the first Italian to reach the North Cape, and in the North Cape Centre there is an exhibition vitrine displaying different scenes from Negri’s visit. This book and travel account was based on his letters, and published by his heirs after his death. The content can be considered a “scientific” document because it is intended to confute some legendary and fabulous statements by Olaus Magnus and give the reader a thorough and detailed description of places, people, human types, customs and habits. To accompany the text the book was illustrated with 17 folded plates from Lapland. The book stands as an important reference work of the North from the 17th/18th century. The book is divided in eight letters but useful information was added to the letters after Negri’s return to Italy in 1666. Part one covers Lapland, part five, six and seven describe his travels in Norway and the last is devoted to Finnmark and the North Cape. Francesco Negri’s work has always been regarded as a rare book. A second edition, also very rare, was published in 1701. Provenance: Bookplate J.O. Wedberg. Frontispiece dated 1727, the title-page printed in red and black and also dated 1727 (this is the title-page and the frontispiece for the second edition and has replaced the one from 1720 we would expect to find. Probably the book was bound with the 1727 title-page around 1730 when the set of 16 plates was added to the book), engraved frontispiece, 6 folding maps, and 7 plates, and 16 double-page plates “Kleyne Vissery”. Contemporary original vellum by the publisher with stamps and lines and central ornament (slightly bowed, worn, some losses of the vellum) (AMSTERDAM by Abraham Mourbach 1720), here the title-page s’Gravenhage 1727 “The Zorgdrager” is the most important and extensive Dutch work on whaling, including descriptions of the early discoveries and exploration in the northern regions, Greenland, Iceland, Spitsbergen, Novaja Zemlja, Jan Mayen and Strait Davis. The book deals with natural history, geography, history, and economics, detailed lists of ships’ outfits, list of ship-owners and sea captains, and extensive vocabulary, as well as a wealth of other details. Our copy is unique as it has bound in a complete set of the 16 plates by Adriaan van der Laan after Sieuwerd van der Meulen, and published by Pieter Schenk c. 1730, illustrating the important Dutch whaling enterprise in the Arctic sea. The set is in the early state with Schenk’s imprint and German and Dutch text only. Later impressions are with English text added replacing the imprint. This is the most comprehensive set of illustrations from the whaling industry early 1700. Some spotting and water stains mostly towards the end. The folding plate with a coloured spot. Occasional worming. A genuine and unique copy surely compiled for a special customer.

A FINE AND COMPLETE COPY OF THE MOST EXTENSIVE LITHOGRAPHED WORK ON SCANDINAVIA, SPITSBERGEN, RUSSIA AND THE BALTIC COUNTRIES. The monumental work presented in the catalogue is the account of the French expedition to the north which took place from 1838 – 40 under the command of the French marine doctor Paul J. Gaimard. The expedition was later commonly known as “La Recherche”. La Recherche was the headquarter ship for the expedition participants. Though the enterprise was initiated by the French and was supported by King Louis-Philippe, it is regarded as one of the first international cooperation expeditions in the history. Several Norwegian participants joined the expedition and entered “La Recherche” when the ship arrived along the coast of Norway. Schiøtz I lists 28 names of participants from France, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. AN IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF PLATES: They include topographical views, maps, tables, plates of different animals and fishes, shells, geological illustrations and other scientific material. No less important are the many plates illustrating folklore, including the Sami people. There are portraits and interior scenes as well as pictures of the camps and their homes. The comprehensive text volumes describe and explain many of the plates and examine several complicated scientific issues. The topographical prints were mostly based on drawings made on the spot by the French artists Auguste Mayer, Charles Giraud, Barthelemy Lauvergne and F. Biard and depicting from south: Hamburg, Denmark, Faeroes, Norway with 98 views from Christiania to the North Cape including 40 from North Norway and Lapland, Spitsbergen (Svalbard) and Bear Island 27 plates, Sweden, Finland, Russia with Moscow, Poland and the Baltic countries. THE COMPLETE SET OF 526 PLATES (450 + 76), THE NATURAL HISTORY PLATES FINELY COLOURED BY HAND. INCLUDING THE ACCOMPANYING TEXT VOLUMES. ALL BINDINGS ARE UNIFORM. THE SET IS THE MOST IMPORTANT INTERNATIONAL 19TH CENTURY PRINTED WORK DESCRIBING AND ILLUSTRATING NORWAY, THE NORTH AND THE SAMI PEOPLE. Regarding the possible publication of some special or luxury copies, see E.H. Schiøtz I, page 159 referring to two subscription publications in the Norwegian National Library, Oslo. It says here: “Il a été tiré un petit nombres exemplaires, sur papier jésus vélin satiné pour le texte , et sur papier de Chine colombier vélin pour les figures…double figures , noires et coloriées; toute les figures noires sur papier de Chine”. Schiøtz I says that the price for a complete regular copy in 1842 was Frs. 1113,50 (equivalent at that time to NOK 800 = 200 Speciedaler), twice more for a luxury copy. This was a fortune in the 1840s. Condition: “As usual” marginal browning and spotting affecting some plates in atlas volumes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Some more than others. Some plates oxidized verso but not touching the image. But in general very fine.

When printed on China paper the plates are not affected by the usual browning always found on certain plates in the regular edition printed on normal paper. The technique used is “Chine appliqué”. The China paper with the printed image was pasted wet using high pressure, onto thick, large paper sheets making the volumes much taller than usual. A complete “Gaimard” with all the plate volumes and the accompanying text books is seldom found. It has been estimated that the total print run could be as few as c. 150 copies. Several copies are in institutions or in public libraries and many have been broken. It is certainly a rare work. ABRAHAM ORTELIUS ”Septentrionalium Regionum Descrip.” Contemporary hand-coloured engraving, 36x49cm ANTWERP May 20th, 1570 (date on the colophone of the atlas) THE VERY FIRST ISSUE OF A MILESTONE MAP OF SCANDINAVA AND THE NORTH. In 1570 Abraham Ortelius published his atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first atlas in the modern sense of the word. (See our entry 10, the complete atlas). Among the fifty-three maps was a general map of the Northern Regions. In the “Septentrionalium” Ortelius gathered and melted together cartographical material and information from Donis, Ziegler, O. Magnus, Zeno and others. The impressive map became the standard map of the region for the next 40 years. It was printed from the same copperplate until as late as 1641. The printing process and alterations to the plate can be followed during the different 8 states according to Ginsberg. Already the first year of publication 1570 the atlas went through four printings or issues, today marked with A – D. The different setting of the Latin text verso decides which issue we are discussing. Only 1570A is unique for identification with the access to a single map only. From 1570 – c. 1574 the map is identified as state 1. One distinct feature is the lack of the 8 names on the North Pole continent first added in 1592 (state 4). THE MYTH OF THE MONSTERS IN THE ARCTIC SEA

The idea of making this dramatic map belonged to the Danish historian Anders Sørensen Vedel who asked the Icelander Gudbrandur Thorláksson to draw a map of Iceland. Thorláksson had studied astronomy and mathematics in Copenhagen and also published the first Icelandic Bible (1584). In the interior of the island there are depicted volcanoes in eruption, mountain chains, rivers and different animals including polar beers. In the sea, various creatures like monsters and different species of whales are shown. Verso Latin text (page no. 116) explaining the names of the different animals pictured on the map.

UNIQUE YEAR OF PUBLICATION. Gerhard and Cornelis De Jode’s second atlas edition “Speculum Orbis Terrarum” published in 1593 contained two world maps. The first is signed by Cornelis De Jode on a rectangular projection. The second is unsigned and is “one of relatively few world maps drawn as two hemispheres on north and south polar projections” (Shirley). This new world map among other “fresh” maps in the edition attempted to keep the atlas “Speculum” “up-to-date” following rapid advances in geographic knowledge towards the end of the 16th century. In the light of recent discoveries the knowledge of the Arctic and the Antarctic continents was rapidly improving and some old theories had to be discarded or changed. One example is the old idea of a great unknown land in the south. The map is elegantly engraved and surrounding the hemispheres and there are elaborate borders of cherubs and clouds. In these most spectacular original colours and in very good condition, the map is striking and an eye-catcher. THIS COPY IN ORIGINAL COLOUR. PUBLISHED IN ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ATLASES IN THE HISTORY OF CARTOGRAPHY. Famous circular polar map, also depicting Scandinavia and parts of America, Russia and the Northwest and Northeast Passage influenced by English explorers. In three corners small circular maps of Shetland, Faroe Islands and the imagined island “Frislant”. In this state Spitsbergen is not yet depicted on the map, see below. The tradition that The North Pole is the center of four streams was not based on any exploration but could have been based on mediaeval “T-O-maps”. They had Jerusalem in the center and the Paradise at the top where it was supposed that the World’s four great rivers had their source. The map was posthumously published by Gerard’s son Rumold in 1595 in the first book with maps where the word “Atlas” was used. There is a second printing of the first state from 1602. Jodocus Hondius acquired the map publishing business of Mercator in 1604 and the North Pole copper plate was partly re-engraved for the expanded Mercator-Hondius atlases after 1606. The map in the second state was intended to include Spitsbergen and changes in the shape of Novaja Zemlja are mostly based on the map by Barents from 1598. The colours are slightly faded. 35. HENDRIK HONDIUS “Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica” Contemporary hand-coloured engraving, 38x55cm AMSTERDAM (1630) – but c. 1642 A MAGNIFICENT WORLD MAP IN DECORATIVE ORIGINAL COLOURS. This map by Hondius is regarded as one of the most beautiful world maps ever engraved. It is also one of the most influential in supporting the hypothesis of California as an island and one of the earliest maps to show the Dutch discoveries in Australia. The North and the potential Northeast Passage dominate the view of the Northern Hemisphere. Portraits of J. Caesar, C. Ptolemy, G. Mercator and J. Hondius occupy each corner. Other decorations are symbols of the four elements, a celestial orb, various native figures, flowers and fruit. According to Shirley, this is state two with the date 1641 and the imprint of Ioannes Ianssonius. French text verso. Light browning to margins caused by an old mount. THE BLAEU COMPANY AND THEIR MASTERPIECE MAP IN MINT CONDITION 37. JOAN BLAEU “Nova et Accuratissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula” Contemporary hand-coloured engraving, 41x54cm AMSTERDAM c. 1659 A SUPERB EXAMPLE IN ORIGINAL COLOUR HEIGHTENED IN GOLD OF ONE OF THE MOST DECORATIVE WORLD MAPS. The double hemisphere map was created for the Blaeu firm’s new monumental work “Atlas Major” contained in 9-12 volumes, a collection of 600 maps published in five different languages. It replaced the classic Mercator projection map of the world. The “Atlas Major” is the peak of the Blaeu company’s history (and perhaps in the history of cartography in general) before the great fire of Amsterdam in 1672 ruined their business and before the death of Joan Blaeu. The World map was put in front of the atlas introducing the section of Scandinavia, The Arctic, and Russia.The map is sumptuously decorated. Outside the twin hemispheres at the top are celestial figures seated among clouds and below are representations of the four seasons. Galileo overlooks the western hemisphere and the teacher of Joan Blaeu’s father, Tycho Brahe is depicted on the right. Cartographically California is still shown as an island and the west coast of Australia is well depicted, due to the close relationship between Blaeu and “Veerendige Oost-Indische Compagnie” (VOC). FREDERICK DE WIT “Totius Europa Littora Novissime edita” Contemporary hand-coloured engraving, 49x89cm AMSTERDAM c. 1675 - 80 THE FAMOUS LARGE-SIZE SEA CHART OF EUROPE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION AND IN FULL ORIGINAL COLOURS. The chart is one of the most decorative maps of Europe from the 17th Century extending from West Africa and the Mediterranean to Spitsbergen and Nova Zemlya far north. It was printed from two plates and originally joined and published in Frederick De Wit’s “Orbis Maritimus”. It is richly illustrated with a large cartouche and seven coats-of-arms. Other decorations are elephants in North Africa and rutting goats in Norway. “Its shape and style are intentionally reminiscent of the early manuscript portolans of the area drawn on vellum” See Ginsberg. “Totius Europae” is a highly influential map, a foremost example illustrating the reasons for Dutch supremacy in map production during the seventeenth century. PLANSJEVERK OVER 1800 – TALLETS NORGE Reisene og oppdagelsene, et bidrag til identitet og nasjonsbygging En synliggjøring av epoken gjennom en kunstnerisk og kulturhistorisk bok- og billedskatt En definisjon av plansjeverk: Når vi i antikvariatbokverdenen i dag bruker betegnelsen «Plansjeverk» om bøker med ett eller flere bilder trykt på separate plansjer med eller uten separat tekst, er dette direkte avledet av de engelske navnene «Plate books or colour plate books», eller på tysk «Ansichtenwerke» (prospektverk). Motivene på plansjene kan være ulike, fra topografiske bilder og folkedrakter til medisinske avbildninger. I et typisk plansjeverk er gjerne bildene/plansjene ofte trykket på litt tykkere og bedre papir enn eventuell tekst i samme verk. Men dette kan selvfølgelig variere. Et typisk plansjeverk har gjerne avbildningene som en dominerende del av boken. Plansjeverk, av hva vi har valgt som definisjon, er noe som hovedsakelig hører til fra 1700-tallets slutt og frem til Katalognummer 40 Atkinson, Fra Egersund fotografiets tidsalder mot slutten av 1800-tallet. Trykte plansjer innbundet i bøker og bokform er en videreføring av 1600/1700-tallets såkalte «Galleri-verker» der bildene gjerne ble hengt på veggen i en rekke eller serie. Det var sjelden riktig topografisk korrekte motiver, men mer romantikk og fantasi og inneholdt også ofte mytologiske gjengivelser. Opplysningstid med reiser til spennende naturmål, også i Europa, bidro til større behov for realistiske gjenskapninger av naturen og topografien. Det samme innenfor folkedrakter og medisinsk vitenskap. Kongen i København og hans 1700-tallsreiser bidro til starten og kronprins Fredrik støttet økonomisk Christian A. Lorentzen og Erik Pauelsen og deres norgesreiser fra 1788. På grunnlag av deres malerier utførte Heinrich A. Grosch og Georg Haas en rekke kobberstukne prospekter som gjerne var fargetrykket. Disse trykkene kom over en lenger periode og vi pleier ikke å definere dem som plansjeverk i vår betydning. De var nok aldri tenkt utgitt i samlet form innbundet. Ut i fra ovennevnte momenter gir det da full mening å klassifisere tidsalderen til plansjeverk over Norge til 1800-årene. Hvor får vi lærdom til kunnskap om disse plansjeverkene? Eiler H. Schiøtz´ to bøker «Utlendingers reiser i Norge» er helt fundamentale, og man må bare beundre ham for hva det var mulig å finne ut om historien og bakgrunnen til de ulike verk over Norge laget og utgitt av nettopp utlendinger. Hans internasjonale kontaktnett var uvurderlig. Det ble etter hvert også i Norge utgitt og produsert viktige plansje- og billedverk. Men bakgrunnslitteraturen om utgiver eller produksjonene av disse hjemmeproduserte billedverkene er ofte langt svakere enn de utenlandske. Under denne kategorien er det fortsatt mange ubesvarte spørsmål både om opphavsmenn (var nok bare menn!) og utgivere. Med unntak av enkelte

utgivelser av Christian Tønsberg, kan vi generelt si at de tidlige norskutgitte plansjeverk er sjelden vare. Når det gjelder akkurat Chr. Tønsberg finnes det en god bibliografisk oversikt utgitt av Nils Messel i «Kunst og Kultur» nr. 4 årgang 1990. Harald Salvesen utga i 1961 en oversikt over de utgitte arbeidene til Peter C.F. Wergmann og Nanna Ebbing har (1959) forsøkt seg på en bibliografi over bergenseren G.C.C.W. Prahls produksjon. Tidlig i 1800-årene har de fleste plansjeverkene kobberstukne plansjer, men ved litografiets inntog etter 1800 kommer det til å overta som trykkmedium. I norsk produksjon blir litografiet nesten totaldominerende da både Christiania og Bergen fra tidlig i 1820-årene får litografiske verksteder.

Wilhelm M. Carpelan (Töfsala i Finland 1787 – Stockholm 1830) er sammen med Johannes Flintoe (København 1787 – 1870) regnet blant pionerene i norsk reise- og kunstliv. Carpelan kom til Christiania som adjutant for den svenske stattholderen grev J.A. Sandels og fikk i oppdrag å bringe stattholderen trygt til Bergen sommeren 1819. Blant annet gjennom yrket som offiser var Carpelan utdannet i tegning og kartografi, og han utførte på sine Norgesreiser en rekke skisser og studier, gjerne i akvarell eller gouache. Flere av disse ble stilt ut på den nylig grunnlagte Tegneskolen i Christiania i 1820. Det kan nevnes at det er Carpelan som står bak det første kunstneriske verket over Jotunheimen i norsk kunst da han og reisefølget gjør en stopp på Murklopphøgda på Filefjell 31. juli 1819. Wilhelm M. Carpelan var ikke bare tegner og maler, men var nok kanskje en enda dyktigere grafiker. I Sverige regnes han som en foregangsmann i faget. Nettopp Johannes Flintoe fikk sin lærdom i akvatintteknikken gjennom Carpelan. Så grundig gikk Carpelan til verks i kunstnerskapet at han til slutt døde av det. Giftgasser fra arbeidet med akvatinter tok knekken på ham 43 år gammel. Wilhelm M. Carpelans hovedverk som kunstner «Voyage pittoresque» er delt inn i tre deler med hvert sitt tittelblad. Del 1 omfatter starten på en vestlandsreise fra Christiania over Ringerike ned Krokkleiva og opp til Fagernes. Del 2 beskriver fortsettelsen frem til Suletind, mens del 3 er i helhet viet Telemark. Carpelan foretar både i 1820 og 1823 en reise hit. Det er kanskje i denne delen av verket vi finner flere av de klassiske prospektene som har gjort Carpelan kjent. Flere av motivene har hatt betydelig innflytelse på oppfatningen av Telemark gjennom tidene. I kolorert variant har motivene i sin fremtoning en stor likhet med kjente internasjonale kunstverk fra perioden. Flere av trykkene gir assosiasjoner til å kunne være inspirert av grafisk japansk kunst.

JOHN WILLIAM EDY, WILLIAM FEARNSIDE & FORLEGGEREN BOYDELL

Året 1800 ankom de to engelske kunstnere John W. Edy og William Fearnside Sørlandet med båt og reiste videre landveien østover mot Christiania. På denne tiden var det krig og uro i Europa og ved Helgeroa ble de to engelskmennene arrestert og brakt til Christiania mistenkt for spionasje til fordel for England. Mens etterforskningen pågikk ble de to «gentlemen» holdt i forvaring hos selveste Bernt Anker, og det var ingenting å utsette på forpleiningen blir det hevdet. Etter noen uker ble det slått fast at beskyldningene mot dem var grunnløse og de ble satt fri. De gjorde hastig ferdige sine påtenkte skisser fra Christiania og Østfold før de forlot landet gjennom Sverige. Vel tilbake i London begynte arbeidet med å velge ut skisser til akvatintene og en påtenkt stor Norgesserie. Det første de gjorde var imidlertid å lage hvert sitt «takke-prospekt» til Bernt Anker. Edy utførte et stort akavatinttrykk over Christiania, mens Fearnside utførte et tilsvarende over Skien (se nedenfor). De økonomiske tidene i England var imidlertid i mellomtiden blitt dårlige og i tillegg døde den gamle forleggeren Boydell i 1804. Det påtenkte bokprosjektet dro ut i tid. Først i 1811 ble arbeidet med kobberplatene påbegynt og verket «Picturesque Views and Scenery of Norway» ble ferdigstilt med 80 akvatinter og tekst til bildene i 1820. Prospektene ble trykket i fargetoner og så håndkolorert. Noen år etter utkom en ny utgave av en annen utgiver og denne sørget for å fjerne den gamle forlagsadressen. Bladene ble denne gangen sterkere kolorert for hånd, kanskje for å kompensere for visse påbegynte plateslitasjer. Dette medfører at disse eksemplarene i dag gjerne fremstår som mer dekorative og spennende kunstnerisk da de kan ha en slående koloristisk fremtoning.

Vi har i denne katalogen beskrevet flere av Edys og Fearnsides verk fra Norge som alle innehar sine betydelige kvaliteter. Billedverket dekker Sør-Norge langs kysten opp til Trondheim. Da John W. Edy og William Fearnside aldri kom til vestlandskysten eller Trondheim må foreleggene til disse prospektene ha et annet opphav. Dette skal også gjelde Haldensmotivet til tross for at reisefølget hastig var innom her før de forlot Norge. Det er foreslått at forlaget kan ha fått tak på tegninger av bergenseren Joh. Fr. L. Dreier. Uten disse «eksterne» bidragene hadde antagelig verket fremstått litt for tamt og ukomplett, er hva vi i dag kan tenke oss at forleggeren vurderte. «Edys prospektverk» inneholder flere av de tidligste gjengivelser av våre byer og steder fra tidlig 1800. Christianiaserien på 10 prospekter får her nevnes som kanskje høydepunktet. Dette gjelder ikke bare dette verket, men generelt blant de engelske gjengivelser av Norge fra perioden. Litteratur: E.H. AV STØRSTE SJELDENHET. Som vi hørte ovenfor var dette William Fearnsides bidrag for å takke Bernt Anker for gjestfriheten under forvaringen i Christiania sommeren 1800. I tillegg ble det tydeligvis trykket noen flere eksemplarer for salg, og vi finner de to prospektene Christiania og Skien annonsert i «Norske Intelligenssedler», 8.2.1804. Man har tidligere valgt å datere trykkene til nærmere 1800, så dette er et interessant innspill. I «Intelligenssedler» er det anført: «Prospect over Christiania, 5 Rdlr. 48sk; Ditto over Scheen, 4 Rdlr. 48sk». Dette var en betydelig sum på denne tiden. Prospektet av Skien er sjeldent og det synes å eksistere færre eksemplarer av dette enn Edys trykk av Christiania. I offentlige samlinger skal «Skeen» være i Norsk Folkemuseum, Aust-Agder-Museet, Eidsvollsbygningen, Telemark Museum og Nasjonalbiblioteket, Oslo (noen av disse er ukolorerte). Vi har i denne katalogen valgt å presentere to eksemplarer samtidig av «Boydell – Edy» og utgaven rundt 1830. Dette gjøres fordi de begge innehar så mange uvanlig fine kvaliteter hver for seg og fremstår som høyverdige kunstverk og kulturobjekter i en viktig periode for oppbyggingen av Norge som selvstendig nasjon. En bedre internasjonal reklame for Norge enn dette verket fantes antagelig ikke på denne tiden. Den herværende katalog som presenterer denne avdelingen med plansjeverk vil temmelig sikkert bli stående i lang tid fremover som referanse og oppslag. Det skal gå lang tid før en slik kvalitetssamling innenfor dette feltet igjen ser dagens lys.

Originalt kartonasjebind med typografisk tekst HAMBURG 1855 Den norske legen Heinrich A. Thaulow kom til Sandefjord i 1834 og grunnla kurbadet i 1837. Sandefjord hadde omkring 800 innbyggere på denne tiden. Kurbadet skulle snart bli berømt også ute i Europa. Thaulow var også lege ved Blaafarveværket på Modum og grunnla badet her i 1857. Samme år som Thaulows bok utga Ebbesen et tilsvarende verk i Christiania «Sandefjords Bad» (se Kunstantikvariat PAMA, katalog 17 i 2009, nr. 87). Utgiverens originalbind i sort helsjirting med gullforgylling BRUXELLES 1857 Regnes som et av de sjeldneste av de klassiske plansjeverkene (“Da verket er overmåte sjeldent – visstnok utgitt i kun 100 eksemplarer”, se Schiøtz I side 516). Med E.H. Schiøtz’ kommentarer og notater i boken der han bl.a. henviser til antikvarbokhandler Lunge Larsen med hensyn til påstanden om et opplag på 100 eksemplarer. Reisen som grunnlag for verket ble foretatt i 1869. De 12 plansjene viser bl.a. Christiania, Torghatten, Lofoten, Raftsund, Lofoten, Bergen og «Langaardsund» ved Kragerø. Proveniens: Eiler H. Komplett eksemplar med 48 + 36 litografier og tilhørende tekst. Sannsynligvis det eneste eksemplaret som eksisterer som er helt komplett og med alle plansjene i samtidig håndkolorering. Koloreringen er antatt å være utført av Wergmann selv. Innbundet i to elegante blå bind i maroquin (Magnus Myra) innlagt i tilpasset fôret kassett. Trykkene utkom heftevis og det følger løst vedlagt: 1 tittelblad til del 1 For- og bakomslag “Förste Hefte” + Foromslag 1. hefte For- og bakomslag “Tredie Hefte” For- og bakomslag “Femte Hefte” 1 bakomslag datert Christiania 1837 Kanskje det mest unike, sjarmerende og “mest urnorske” av alle utgitte plansjeverk. Peter C.F. Wergmann var dansk og kom til Norge i 1831. Som teaterskuespiller og teatermaler ved Christiania Theater reiste han mye rundt i landet og benyttet ledige stunder til tegning av byer og kjente steder. I Christiania ble skissene overført til litografi i ulike størrelser utført hos bl.a. Fehr, Winther og Kruse. Foruten “Norge, fremstilled i lithographerede Billeder…” utga han plansjeverket “Norsk Prospect samling” 1833 – 36 og en rekke enkeltblad. Han har også utført dekorasjonsmalerier på Slottet. Wergmanns litografier må regnes som det norskeste av det norske innenfor den tidlige trykte billedfremstillingen. Alle hans verk er i dag sjeldne og etterspurte samlerobjekter. Med alle 80 samtidig håndkolorerte kobberstikk (74 nummererte + 6 tilleggsplansjer, plansje 58 “Fanö” foreligger her som original akvarell på samme type papir som trykkene). Plansjene er bundet med en kopi av foromslaget til 4. hefte (fra Kongelige Biblioteks eksemplar i København) i et praktbind med gullborder i mørkeblå maroquin og med helt gullsnitt (Jakob Baden) KØBENHAVN 1812 – 15 En komplett “Senn” med alle tilleggsplansjene hører til det ypperste i den norske bokverdenen og forekommer bsre for salg med tiårs mellomrom. Dette prakteksemplaret har tilhørt den store danske samleren Knud Scavenius som også fikk besørget det påkostete og vakre bindet. Senns forelegg til draktplansjene anses å være tegninger utført av Johan F.L. Dreier som skal ha tilhørt en samling eid av Grev Moltke. Proveniens: Grosserer Knud Scavenius, Danmark. Med hans gullforgylte ex-libris i et praktbind besørget av ham. Boken ble trolig omsatt på en av auksjonene over Scavenius-samlingen enten i 1912 eller 1923. 66. JOACHIM FRICH “Norske Nationaldragter samlede og udgivne af I. Frich tillige med en Afhandling om Nordmændenes ældre Dragter af Prof. R. Keyser” Folio, 31,6x26,3cm. Rosa originalomslag (dette antagelig i faksimile), litografert tittel og 9 kolorerte litografiplansjer og en ukolorert (kom ikke kolorert). Med tekstbilaget “Om Normændenes Klædedragt i ældre Tider. Medeelt af Professor R. Keyser” BERGEN 1847 (visstnok egentlig 1848) Enda et folkedraktverk, som med Keysers tekstbilag, må regnes som et ikon innenfor feltet. Joachim Frichs hefte om Nasjonaldraktene utkom i et svært begrenset antall og er i praksis aldri fremme for salg. Trykkene ble utført på grunnlag av Frichs egne tegninger og Aagot Noss nevner at hun (i 1973) kjente til 43 draktakvareller og en tegning utført av Frich. Om det umåtelig sjeldne tekstbilaget til Keyser kan vi hos J.B. Halvorsen lese: “Denne Afhandling kom blot i nogle ganske faa Exemplarer ud blandt Almenheden. Udgaver af det anførte Billedverk med Keysers Text hører til de litterære Sjeldenheder”. De åtte trykkene er innlagt i omslaget til «Åttonde och Sista Häftet» og utgjør den norske delen i plansjeverket «Swenska och Norska arméerna…». Svært fargefriske og rene eksemplarer. Losting.” Plansjeverk, stor folio, 50x33,5cm Brunt originalomslag, tittelblad og 24 helsides plansjer løse i omslaget BERGEN 1847 ET SÆRDELES FINT EKSEMPLAR AV DET SJELDNE NORSKE VERKET OM SPEDALSKHET, MED OMSLAGENE I BEHOLD. Et enestående internasjonalt arbeid både i norsk bokproduksjon og norsk medisinsk historie som også forteller alt om Prahls mangfold som forlegger. Norge og Bergen lå langt fremme i internasjonal forskning rundt leprabasillen og D.C. Danielssen og Wilhelm Boeck var to foregangsmenn innen bekjempelsen av spedalskhet. Dette var en svært utbredt sykdom på denne tiden. Bokverket produsert i Bergen vekket stor oppmerksomhet over hele verden og er et monument i forskningshistorien om lepra. Litografiene viser hvordan de ulike kroppsdelene er angrepet av sykdommen. Den tekniske utførelsen av de 24 litografiene samt håndkoloreringen, er av enestående kvalitet. Tegningene ble utført av Bergenskunstneren Johan L. Losting (1810 – 76) som hadde flere ulike oppdrag for Prahl, spesielt utførte han en rekke topografiske prospekter. 70. PATROCIUS HIRSCH (Christiania 1758 - 1828) “Situations Cart over Herr Assessor Brochmans Eyendom Woyenvold, Postløkken og Brandtbakken Opmaalt i Aaret 1795 af P. Hirsch” Originaltegnet kart med blekk og penn på papir, 66,5x46,5cm Signert i kartusjen ø.t.h. “P. Hirsch” Utført i CHRISTIANIA 1795 ENESTÅENDE, SJELDENT ORIGINALARBEIDE OVER VØYENVOLDEN MED MARIDALSVEIEN VED SAGENE I OSLO. Hirsch omtales i litteraturen som stadskonduktør, landmåler, lærer, karttegner, major og kaptein. Etter 1810 var han lærer på Krigsskolen og Christiania Kunstskole. I stillingen som konduktør tegnet han kart over Christiania med omegn og hadde også ansvaret for gjenoppbyggingen av Oslo Hospital etter brannen i 1793. I St. Halvard årgang 1937 er det gjengitt plantegninger utført av Hirsch over tukthuskirken datert 1793. I tidskriftet “St. Halvard” 1916 er det en lengre artikkel med tittelen “Av Sagenes historie”. Her omtales vårt kart inngående og er også illustrert, “Ogsaa over Vøienvolden i slutningen av 18de aarh. kan her fremlægges et Hirsch=kart (i familien Udnæs’ eie)...”. I artikkelen skriver Halfdan Møller videre:: “Kaptein Hirsch hadde som opmaaler og karttegner av byen og bymarken til sammen kun 700Rdl. Han drev da efterhvert med privat for de forskjellige eiere at levere specialkarter (som ovenstaaende) mot en rimelig godtgjørelse”. Kartets målestokk er “Alen” og det er oppgitt arealmål for “Woyenvolden, Postlokken, Brandtbakken”. Vøyenvolden grenser til følgende eiendommer og veier iflg. kartet: “Lovisenberg Herr Johan Gotfried Bauthers Eyendom, Herr Jacob Bøllings Eyendom Dannevig, Graaben Sletten Jens Chr: Olsens Lökke, Vei fra Gedemyhren til Möllerne og Maridahlen, Herr Claus Clausens Lökke, Christer Baches Eyendom Øvre Wöyen, Herr Claus Clausens Eyendom Dahle Lokken Kallet Den Saa Kaldede Postmager Løkke”. Det samtidig påførte nummeret øverst til høyre kan tyde på at kartet muligens har vært brukt i en rettstvist eller lignende. På fotografiet av kartet i “St. Halvard” 1916 kan man se at kartet øverst til venstre i det blanke feltet har hatt en skade eller fuktskjold. En gang etter 1916 må dette området på kartet ha blitt restaurert og erstattet med et annet papir. Nede på midten er det en gammel restaurert rift. ET STORSLAGENT ORIGINALDOKUMENT SOM OMHANDLER DEN ØKONOMISK UHYRE VIKTIGE TRELASTHANDELEN OG FLØTINGEN I ARENDALSVASSDRAGET. Kartet går rett inn i en gammel og langvarig strid i Arendalsvassdraget om hvem som satt med rettighetene til fløtingen. I 1789-konvensjonen ble den første fellesfløtingsforeningen opprettet etter at Dedekam-familien tidligere hadde hatt all makt og innflytelse over dette viktige økonomiske området. Nå fikk hver trelasthandler en stemme. Konvesjonen var først og fremst kjempet frem av bøndene med hjelp fra staten, men resultatet ble fortsatt ikke spesielt demokratisk da det fremdeles gavnet trelasthandlerne som satt i styret. I 1862 ble styremonopolet brutt ved at bønder og staten fikk representanter i styret. Monopolets svekkelse skulle sterkest skyldes en av trelasthandlernes egne menn, nemlig Morten Holst. Han kom selv fra reder og kjøpmannsfamilie og de drev en forholdsvis beskjeden trelasthandel. Holst var lidenskapelig opptatt av næringsfrihet og motstander av monopolpolitikken og stod iherdig frem med dette budskapet. Han så det umulig å kjempe likeverdig økonomisk med byens mektigste familier og krevde forandringer. Forslag ble lagt frem for trelasthandlerne i 1856. Han ga dette året i Arendal ut boken «Om Nytten og Nødvendigheden af en forandret Driftsmaade i det arendalske Vasdrag». Vårt kart kan godt være laget i denne forbindelsen. Striden mellom de store og mektige trelasthandlerne og de mindre aktørene skulle fortsette i hvert fall frem til 1862 da det kom til et forlik med bøndene. «Freden» ble visstnok kort og striden blusset opp igjen, men uansett takkes Morten Holst for demokratiseringsprosessen han fikk gjennomført. Som innehaver av den største privateide samlingen med verker av Johannes Flintoe og Wilhelm M. Carpelan, samt malerier av J.C. Dahl, J.F. Eckersberg m.fl., foreligger det planer om å benytte to av byggene, “Østerdalsstua” og «Jegersborg» til museum omkring temaet «Norges fjell og fjorder». Her vil også andre viktige kulturelle gjenstander vedrørende Østerdalen og våre fjellområder komme i sitt rette miljø. Et bibliotek med gamle kart, dokumenter og bøker vil utgjøre en viktig del av konseptet.

Arnold Haukeland «Bølgen» 1979/80 Syrefast stål, høyde 190cm + sokkel, signert. Blir under arrangementet «Koppang tar Bølgen» 11. juli 2015 gjenoppsatt på hotellet etter 15 års fravær. Skulpturen ble avduket samme sted i oktober 1980 med kunstneren til stede. Denne gangen vil kunsthistoriker Holger Koefoed stå for avdukingen.

Stor-Elvdal kommune kan by på mange rekreasjonsmuligheter med sin storslåtte natur. Fjellpartiet mot nord med Rondane er mest kjent. Harald Sohlberg bodde 1900 - 02 i Sollia, og utførte her mange av sine skisser og utkast til det som siden har blitt et nasjonalt ikon, «Vinternatt i fjellene» (eller som vi gjerne sier i dag «Vinternatt i Rondane») Et vakkert og signert eksemplar av originallitografiet til Harald Sohlberg kan beundres på Stor-Elvdal Hotell.
