JAPAN N E D ! 02.08.14 – 02.09.14
‘monozukuri’ the "art, science and craft of making things."
Gallery TEN is hosting an exhibition of Japanese and Japanese-inspired contemporary and applied art in Edinburgh’s vibrant West End during the Edinburgh Festival from the 2nd August to the 2nd September 2014.
In many ways, Japan and its creative works remain a mystery to Western eyes. The purpose of ‘Japanned’ is to illustrate the diversity and creative ability of contemporary Japanese artists and artisans, and highlight the technical skills and artistic endeavour of this highly individual and sophisticated society.
Japanese printmaker Kouki Tsuritani will be exhibiting a collection of his outstanding mezzotint prints which will inspire and enthral viewers with both their fantastical images and his technical skills.
Alongside Kouki’s work, Gallery Ten is exhibiting a number of British and international artists who either use Japanese techniques or draw inspiration from Japanese art and imagery.
The applied arts will be represented by a number of Japanese jewellers, ceramicists, glass and textile artists whose work shows the extraordinary and refined qualities of contemporary Japanese artists.
We are surrounded by many products that are the result of Japan’s dedication to technological design and evolution, but we are to a large degree ignorant about Japan both artistically and culturally. We may well be able to name a Sushi dish but are unlikely to be able to name a Japanese artist! Japanned will be a rare opportunity to become familiar with and enjoy some of the best of contemporary Japanese art and applied art.

MEZZOTINTS
I am a printmaker and was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1967. I try to combine the philosophy of traditional Japanese art (such as Ukiyoe, which means “Floating world”) with traditional European printmaking. I make black and white mezzotints, photogravures and wood engravings. I like the rich harmony of monochrome and think it the most sympathetic for expressing the depths of our emotions and for reflecting the inner views of people who live in a “floating” modern world. I hope that viewers of my works find them intriguing and are provoked to feel something of their lost memories. I trained in painting and printmaking at Kanazawa College of Art, Japan. I have exhibited extensively throughout Japan and in international exhibitions.

Our sincere thanks go to the late Roy Wood. It was he that introduced us to Kouki Tsuritani without that introduction this exhibition would not have come about. Also to Christine Wood for letting us have access to some of Roy’s last output to hang in the show.
