One of the most memorable places, where I was surrounded by a profound strong silence was in the Drakensberg after a long journey. I wondered perhaps if the strong silence would be felt there, in such a profound way, if it was not attached to a long journey.
My approach to this exhibition, titled Strong Silence, visually investigates whether a state of strong silences is an environmental or situational experience.
The original aim for ‘Strong Silence’ was to create a visual journey through a series of works that would be expressed in profound visual moments. It was important to work intuitively on this exhibition so that it too became a journey as well as being about many other journeys. I believe that drawing is a form of true thought transferred through mark making. As an ink artist, I extended my relationship with ink further by working with print medium drawing methods, real time drawing and emotive drawing. The inspiration for the works where sourced from South African landscapes where I found moments of silence in the past 2 years, whether it came from the wind, or a young forest, or a public park. All the environments share the same found moments of strong silence.
The journey to a strong silence became my subject matter. My intuitive process has resulted in my different landscape tales with some dissolving, and others became a complex narrative of a pathway.

Andrew Sutherland
Andrew Sutherland was born in Oranjemund, South West Africa in early 1982. He moved to England with his family at the age of 11 where he spent his early teenage years. At the age of 16 Andrew moved to Cape Town and after finishing school enrolled at The Ruth Prowse School of Art in Woodstock. He obtained his Diploma in Fine Art in 2004 and in 2005 began working as an artist’s assistant for a local abstract artist.
Andrew works in a variety of mediums from watercolours, ink and fine liners to acrylic, spray-paint and charcoal on canvas and paper. His work often evokes a narrative, with soft dream like undertones. Running themes include exploration and discovery with a strong interest in nature and the great outdoors.
Andrew has produced a body of work strictly on canvas as a response to the theme of Strong Silence. His chosen mediums for this show include charcoal, spray-paint and acrylic paint with touches of crayon and pencil. Visually, his use of space and contrast express a softness, a politeness of being, a sense of commune over domination; the loner on his lonesome, unintentional and nonintrusive. The protagonist seems either lost or in search of something, both activities requiring an internal quietness aided by the surrounding silence. One gets the feeling of restlessness coupled with satisfaction, revelry in the position of being lost and alone.
