Partnerships, are they even worth it?
T
here are so many mixed messages out there, first we’re told to be strong and independent, never relying on anyone, and then we’re told that two heads are better than one. Noah certainly made the case for two being the best and the Spice Girls did waffle on about two becoming one so it’s probably safe to say that, generally, we should be ok on our own but we’re most likely going to be “better” in a partnership. Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Like most things there is no “one size fits all” but, if you are feeling in any way insecure about being romantically single or not having a business partner then it’s probably best to just skim on through this. We should stress though, there is absolutely no need to feel like a failure here, but please try and get the single status updated STAT, before it becomes really embarrassing. As long as you’re not single or alone in your business by the end of April you will be safe to read this “partnership” heavy issue of Gallery. So what do partners really bring to the table? Sure, you can share stuff, offer support, have each other’s backs but crucially, you have someone else to blame if things go bad. Partners are also really useful if you want to do things like go to the 8th CAMRA Isle of Man Beer and Cider Festival on the 11th April or the Megaslam Wrestling on the 17th, because if you didn’t have that loving partner to babysit/pick you up or whatever, then you would never be able to get there and have fun without your partner. If you do decide to go it alone then you should know that statistically you might not live as long but on a brighter note, you will be able to choose what you want to eat and what you want to watch on TV, so, you know, it’s not all bad. You will also be able to have the whole bed to yourself and wear what you want without judgement and you’ll never have to fight over who reads Gallery first! SR

RAB NOAKES & BROOKS WILLIAMS //LAXEY INSTITUTE, LAXEY// Fuelled by a shared passion for acoustic roots rock, hook-laden songwriter pop and folky Americana, this Scotland-USA transatlantic collaboration was always inevitable, long before Rab sang banking vocals on Brooks’ ‘Lucky Star’.
The Rab Noakes/Brooks Williams ScotlandUSA Trans-Atlantic collaboration was inevitable. Fuelled by a shared passion for acoustic roots rock, hook-laden songwriter pop, and folky Americana, they met in Glasgow in 2018 when Rab sang backing vocals on Brooks’ ‘Lucky Star’ recording. Shortly thereafter they got together to write songs and the plan to perform was hatched. Brooks Williams, from Georgia USA, is ranked in the Top 100 Acoustic guitarists with a voice ‘you just melt into’ (according to Americana UK). Equally Scotsman Rab Noakes is a force to be reckoned with, with collaborations and affiliations with musicians from Lindisfarne, Stealer’s Wheel and Gerry Rafferty amongst others and his professional experience includes production for the BBC and Musicians’ Union.

The Cleveland Medal competition is on 4 May, with the winners for six solo classes competing for this prestigious award. There’s just so much to learn... Words by: Clare Bowie
Compromise: eeurghh, it’s so painful and tedious but you’re in this together so you better be ready to take the rough with the smooth. There are going to be times when you have to silence that inner brat and realise that Netflix has to be shared. It’s not all about the wonder of clothes folding; sometimes you have to watch 96 minutes of “Free Solo” where a man might plummet to his death at any moment because your partner actually enjoys that kind of thing. #relaxing Sports: more compromise here, it’s not just Netflix, it’s actually all the channels and all the sports. To be the perfect partner, you must not get offended when he shows actual displays of emotion, happiness and unadulterated sorrow at a missed putt or an own goal, a 146 in snooker or a stalled engine in the Grand Prix. This is a side of him that you will never reach and you must remember that he still loves you, but in a different, closed off, emotionally vacant sort of way. His family are now your family. This is a tricky one but if you want to be a proper team then you have to fend off all the slings and arrows together. If they don’t like you that’s fine, if you don’t like them you better start pretending or it’s just plain awkward for everyone. Put your diva away and hold it together for family celebrations. I mean, that’s pretty much why wine was invented anyway! Drink those feelings. Stop judging: His headaches are going to be worse than yours, his colds will all be the flu and it’s probably easier all round if you just accept this before you go into any relationship. So hold back on the childbirth stories and monthly moaning because his tiny mind can’t handle any sort of pain threshold. Best just to make the right noises and gently tell him to go to bed where it’s easier to ignore all that pathetic whinging about nothing. Problem solved!

UPFRONT
Domestic issue: You don’t want to be one of those sad couples who go on and on about toilet seats and bringing out bins. Losing your mind about a toothpaste squeezing policy is not a good look but at the same time lines have to be drawn to keep the passive aggression at bay. You mayhave certain “quirks” regarding dishwasher etiquette and you do not want to be the designated hooverer in the relationship so some things do have to be iron-ed out regarding the, erm ironing etc. Gentle persuasion: Some might call it manipulation but really it’s about openly discussing problems and issues, at least 100 times a day; and, if some people feel themselves to be “worn down” after all those harmless little chats and comments, then it’s pretty clear that you’re on the same page and ready to move forward regarding your “helpful suggestions,” regarding house renovations, decoration, family planning or whatever tiny altercation that may have arisen. #harmony Burgers: You can watch Masterchef together all you want and your partner may well find that a smear of pea puree, infused with black pudding, is the only accompaniment worthy of a pan seared scallop, but listen, that does not change the fact, that when it comes to fine dining, he means a burger with a brioche bun instead of a sesame bap so you can forget any convoluted notions of tasting menus and fancy restaurants because it’s just not going to happen. Knowledge is power and all that. You’re welcome. Decoding: It’s basically true, men are from Mars and Women are from somewhere a lot more complex, sophisticated and interesting so you have to be able to communicate with each other to speak the same language and avoid unnecessary discord. When your partner is rude or angry it simply means he is hungry or upset about the sports. It is actually never really about you so don’t waste your time worrying about it. Life will seem a lot easier now that your complex mind no longer feels needy, naggy or insecure.
Good luck!

Ghost
Poor Ghost. He’s had a difficult start in life as a feral farm kitten. He was attacked by the farmer’s Jack Russell and lost his left eye and part of the tissue around his mouth and lower jaw, but he survived (not least because, despite the damage done, he was able to keep on eating). Several weeks later he was trapped by the farmer and brought to the ManxSPCA, where he’s responded well to treatment. He still needs to have an operation on his eye socket to make sure it heals fully in the future, but his prognosis is excellent.
What’s more remarkable is that this feral kitten has become so tame, so quickly. He was very wary of humans to begin with, but after just a few days he realised that being cuddled was what he needed and he’s now learned to trust the people in his life. He’s a very special little cat and a firm favourite with the cattery staff and volunteers, and we’ve no doubt that he’ll find a loving new home as soon as he’s ready for adoption.
Millie We don’t know much about the very beautiful Millie, because she came to us as a stray from the Peel area, but we estimate that she’s about three years old. She’s very well socialised and she has the most amazing ‘Staffie smile’. Because we don’t know much about her, we will try to be as flexible as possible when considering what her new home should be like. We’re happy to introduce her to other dogs, but we would not be comfortable rehoming her to a family with young children because we don’t know what tolerance levels she has with toddlers (although Staffies are called ‘nanny dogs’ because they are renowned for being good with children – we just can’t take the risk). There is a saying ‘once a Staffie owner, always a Staffie owner’ because this amazing breed of dog captures its owners’ hearts forever … ManxSPCA • Ard Jerkyll, East Foxdale • Tel: 851672

GIVE Dandara is continuing its support of a vital lifeline for older people in our community. The local homebuilder has renewed its sponsorship of Live at Home’s two minibuses for 2019. The funding will be used to cover the running costs of the vehicles, which are used to transport members to and from the 40 social groups, events and activities the charity organises every month.
DANDARA CONTINUES SUPPORT OF ISLAND’S OLDER COMMUNITY
Live At Home has been providing essential support, services and social interaction to its members since 1998, improving the lives of older people on the Isle of Man for more than 20 years. The charity is committed to improving quality of life, and eliminating isolation and loneliness among older people, helping individuals to live independently at home for as long as possible, where they feel happiest and most comfortable and connecting people in communities that care. Its dedicated team of staff and volunteers provide a wide range of services and activities, including one-to-one befriending, lunch clubs, Men in Sheds and information and advice. Anni Pearsall, Funding and Support Manager at Live at Home, said: ‘At least one (and occasionally both) of our minibuses are in action five days a week and are responsible for the transportation of more than 70 people on a weekly basis, which just highlights the demand for our services.
‘Unfortunately, isolation can become an issue when older people don’t have access to transport. That is why pick-ups and dropoffs are such an important aspect of what we do and why our minibuses play such a vital role in our day-to-day services. ‘When you take fuel, insurance, maintenance and servicing into consideration, the running costs for two 14-seater minibuses doesn’t come cheap. As a charity reliant on fundraising and donations we would struggle to fund these ongoing expenses, which is why we’re so grateful to Dandara for its continued support. Dandara Managing Director Seamus
Nugent said: ‘Live at Home works tirelessly in our community to help members live securely and happily at home and to engage in social interaction and activities, and that is so important for everyone’s physical and mental health, and wellbeing as we get older. ‘As a local company, we proudly support our local community in a variety of different ways and are pleased to help with the running costs of the minibuses once again. They are essential in ensuring as many as possible of the Island’s older population can participate in the events, lunches and cinema clubs organised by the charity.’
CELTON MANX RECOGNITION 2019 AWARDS TO BENEFIT 22 LOCAL GOOD CAUSES Recognition, the Celton Manx corporate social responsibility programme, will benefit 22 local good causes in 2019.
Now in its fifth year, the scheme seeks to recognise, support and lend visibility to some of the island’s lower-profile charities and not-for-profit organisations which have only limited resources to fund, deliver and promote their services. Celton Manx executive director Bill Mummery said: ‘Celton Manx has long recognised the voluntary sector’s wealth of expertise and experience, its embracing of innovation and its power to change attitudes and challenge conventional thinking. I believe government is now beginning to share that view and is
14
developing an understanding of how wellmanaged third-sector organisations can deliver services better, faster and more cost effectively. ‘Our Recognition scheme acknowledges the breadth and depth of excellent work being done by many of the island’s smaller, “under the radar” charities. These thirdsector organisations are striving to fulfil their aims and objectives, despite being
under pressure and under resourced. Celton Manx is therefore pleased to be playing its part in helping to unlock the potential of these 22 local good causes and support them in their tireless work to help those most in need.’ Around 100 applications were received for Recognition 2019 awards, some of which will be monetary, others in the form of practical or technical support. GIVE driving skills. The Beep Beep Tour, named after Reggie’s favourite toy car, was set up by parents Chantal and Adam to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of the disease. Chantal Kingswood, Reggie’s mother, said: ‘Reggie’s toy car was his favourite – his eyes lit up whenever he saw it. ‘Our whole world has been taken from under our feet, but we have decided to focus our energy on raising money and awareness in Reggie’s memory, in the hope that other parents don’t have to suffer in the way we have. ‘We hope lots of people will do a ‘Beep Beep’ for us in support of our cause, with drivers honking their horns when they pass the tour on the road, or people making videos of themselves honking a horn and posting them online. That may seem like a small thing, but it will really help us to raise awareness during the tour. ‘We loved visiting the Isle of Man as a family and it is somewhere that Reggie held lots of special memories, so we wanted to incorporate that into the tour. We’re so grateful to the Steam Packet Company for making that a reality.’
ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET COMPANY SUPPORTS MENINGITIS AWARENESS ROAD TRIP The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is supporting two parents on a mission to raise awareness of meningitis, after losing their one-year-old son to the deadly infection last year. Reggie de Silver died in a matter of hours when he developed pneumococcal meningitis and septicaemia after suffering a bout of influenza in March 2018. One year on, his parents have teamed up with UK charity Meningitis Now - the only charity dedicated to fighting the infection in the UK - to organise a fundraising and awareness road trip that will culminate with a series of team car challenges in the Isle of Man. The Beep Beep Tour’ will see an entourage of drivers, six old bangers and a team of charity ambassadors travelling from Brighton to the Isle of Man, stopping at various locations and completing challenges as they go. The tour will start in Brighton on Saturday 20th April, travel to Aylesbury and Liverpool, and finish in the Isle of Man on Wednesday 24th April to

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is supporting the The Beep Beep Tour by providing free of charge travel to the island for the six cars and their passengers. Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: ‘Chantal and Adam’s story is heartbreaking and goes to show the devastation meningitis can cause and how quickly it can spread. Putting their energy into this tour to help others from going through the same heartbreak is inspiring and we are pleased to get behind it.’ Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord, and is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection. In the UK, an estimated 22 people a day will contract the disease. Of those who contract the bacterial type, one in 10 will die.
coincide with Meningitis Awareness Day. Along the way, drivers will be put through their paces by completing scavenger hunts and challenges set by pro-racing drivers. James Bond stunt driver and Manxman Mark Higgins will be joining the tour on the island to test each team’s pace around Jurby Motordrome and showcase his own
Funds raised through the tour will be donated to Meningitis Now as it strives towards a future where no one in the UK loses their life to meningitis and everyone affected by the disease gets the support they require. For anyone who has ever moaned about there being nothing to do on this Island, you need to be around on the first bank holiday weekend in May. Whether your interests are in local art, the environment or a very ‘fiery’ Manx culture, there’s a festival for you between Friday 3rdand Monday 6th May. Words: Suzy Holland Images: Bill Dale (Environment Festival), simonparkphotography.co.uk (Oie Voaldyn) and Carola Rush (IOM Arts Festival)
On Friday and Saturday 3rdand 4ththere is the first ever Isle of Man Environment Festival– a chance to celebrate everything that’s so special about the Isle of Man from its nature, wildlife and marine environment to a general awareness of how what we do affects not just the Island, but the planet. Organised by Beach Buddies after a ‘soft’ launch last October, the event includes stalls and information and interactive activities in a large marquee, catering alongside and an evening social event (details tbc as we go to print). Still in Peel, Sunday 5 May is the second Oie Voaldyn Festival. Launched last year, this brings together everyone who’s interested in the old Manx customs of welcoming in the summer, or just anyone who loves the idea of two torchlight processions, a mock battle between summer and winter, music, fire poi, fire spinning and an amazing firework display. Organiser John Shakespeare explains that Oie Voaldyn doesn’t recreate ancient practices but celebrates the traditions of the past with an eye to the future, and says that the use of fire was one of a number of customs used to fend off witches and evil spirits. “May Eve was a time of joy and revelry, with a battle between summer and winter to banish the old and bring in the new,” he says, “and this festival interprets that with a fully narrated Son et Lumiere experience with stirring music, all against the backdrop of Peel Castle and the Bay.” Whispers from those who attended last year say this is an event not to be missed -events start from 2pm on the beach and continue until 10pm. More details of what’s happening, where and when to get your own flaming torches and other ways you can get involved can be found at www.facebook.com/oievoaldyn. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

And there’s more! The eighth Isle of Man Art Festival starts on 11am on Saturday 4th May and continues until 5pm on Monday. This Festival, organised by the Creative Network, grows year on year and now takes place in locations across the Island with artists ranging from painters and illustrators to potters, poets and photographers exhibiting in public buildings, galleries, studios and their own homes. New for this year is Laxey Glen, with displays and demonstrations in the Pavilion and in a marquee and Ramsey Commissioners have opened up The Courthouse for an exhibition of work by five northern artists. Individual artists’ studios in Maughold (Ballajora Studio), Port Erin, Kirk Michael and Ballaugh will be open, and the combined talents of Grenaby Studios’ artists in the South of the Island will on offer throughout the weekend too. And the Creative Network never misses a cross-over opportunity: if you’re in Peel for the Environment Festival then why not drop into the maritime-themed art exhibition in Peel Centenary Centre too? For anyone who’s not visited any of Art Festival venues before, this is a great opportunity to see the work of local creative artists and buy their work, as well as talking to the artists themselves and even take part in workshops. The free Festival Guide includes a list of participants, maps and directions to venues and will be available from mid-April from the Welcome Centre, the House of Manannan, Noe Bakehouse, Laxey Glen and all major art galleries but keep an eye on www.creativenetwork.imor BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The informal Art Festival launch, with fashion designer Clare Christian, takes place at Laxey Glen Pavilion on 25 April, and is open to the general public. “We are grateful for the ongoing support of the Isle of Man Arts Council and all the various venues, including local town Commissioners, and partner galleries, and of course the artists who throw open their studios and homes to invite people in to look and talk about their work,” says Myra Gilbert of the Creative Network. “It’s a massive undertaking and one many of our artists prepare for all year, and after a record breaking 2,500 visitors in 2018 we hope this year’s Festival, with even more artists and venues, will attract even more.” This May Bank Holiday promises to be a wild and busy start to summer 2019 – finger’s crossed for another hot and sunny one - so enjoy all the Island has to offer with these three festivals over the four days – and never say there’s nothing to do here!
Did you know that if there is breast cancer in your family you’ve a 48% more chance of getting prostate cancer? If you are planning to attend the Oie Voaldyn festival on Sunday, take some spare change for more than just refreshments – the organisers have partnered with new male cancer charity Mannin Cancers to help raise money to invest in new diagnostic and treatment options here on the Island for men with prostate cancer who currently endure numerous visits to UK hospitals. If you’re at Oie Voaldyn, please give generously!

CAINS CORPORTATE TEAM ADVISES ON SALE OF SMP PARTNERS
L
eading Isle of Man commercial law firm, Cains, has advised the current owners and management team of SMP Partners, a leading multi-jurisdictional corporate, trust, and professional services provider headquartered in the Isle of Man, in connection with a management buyout (MBO) of the SMP Partners group of companies to be undertaken by a new management team with the support of Palatine Private Equity LLP, a UK midmarket private equity house. The MBO, which is subject to regulatory approval, is part of a planned leadership succession process and will result in the appointment of a new group CEO, David Hudson. Cains has previously had the pleasure of acting for the current management team when SMP Partners was created in 2007 through an MBO from Fortis Intertrust. Under the current management team, SMP Partners has grown into an international professional services provider with over 200 staff

spanning seven global offices with an unbroken record of financial success. Cains’ corporate team, which was led by Tristan Head with the support of Scott Leonard-Morgan, Andrew Baker and Matthew Wilkinson, acted as lead legal advisors to the current owners of SMP Partners, assisting with the preparation and negotiation of the various sale transaction documents. Tristan Head, a Director of Cains, said: “SMP Partners has been a longstanding and valued client of Cains since its creation in 2007 and we are absolutely delighted to assist the current management of SMP Partners in connection with such a significant transaction. The MBO represents an exciting new chapter for SMP Partners and we wish David and his new management team all the best for the future.” Steve McGowan, group chairman of SMP Partners, commented: “We are delighted to have once again worked with the Cains corporate department
following their assistance 12 years ago with completing our initial MBO which started the SMP story. Due to their commitment, professionalism and expert advice I could not think of a better firm to have had by my side.”

APPLEBY ANNOUNCES GLOBAL FEMALE LEADERS NETWORK
T
he network champions workplace diversity and boardroom representation Appleby’s Female Leaders Network brings together women in senior positions across the jurisdictions in which the firm operates. The network meets regularly to discuss and debate important topics such as diversity and how to develop talented women within an organisation. Sessions are informal and the network includes women from various industries and backgrounds. The network first launched in Jersey in 2017, with Managing Partner Wendy Benjamin bringing together a group of senior female leaders in the jurisdiction. Wendy said: “I am really proud of the Female Leaders Network and the work we are doing to celebrate and promote diversity in the workplace, particularly in the boardroom, where we know women are less represented. As a global firm we want to be leading such important conversations.” Following its successful launch in Jersey, the network will be growing to include the Bermuda, BVI, Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Hong Kong and Isle of Man, with various female Partners and employees across the jurisdictions supporting the initiative.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Appleby chose International Women’s Day to announce the global initiative. International Women’s Day is an international day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It takes place on 8 March annually and this year’s campaign theme was #BalanceforBetter, aiming to drive gender balance across the globe. “Diversity is an important subject and one that we take very seriously at Appleby,” said Faye Moffett, Managing Partner for the Isle of Man office. “We champion diversity across the organisation and understand the benefits to the firm of having a diverse workforce. “As a firm that has a global network which spans 10 jurisdictions, we are a naturally diverse organisation. Females account for more than half of the business as a whole, which is similarly reflected across our senior lawyers and other leadership positions.” Four out of Appleby’s 10 offices have a female Office Managing Partner. In addition, Appleby has employees from over 30 different countries. Faye continues: “Gender is of course only one measure of diversity. When we are recruiting at Appleby it is about finding the right person for the job regardless of gender, religion, race, disability or sexuality. It is also about diversity of thought and having people from different experiences, backgrounds and mind-sets.” Bermuda Partner Tammy Richardson-Augustus, added: “It is incumbent on us to foster a culture where diverse voices are heard, supported and valued and where inclusion is not merely tolerated but receives unquestioned acceptance. An inclusive workplace is quite simply a business imperative. We are pleased to play our part in carving out a path for diversity in the legal arena.”
Joint Statement on the deferral of the Financial Services (Implementation of Legislation) Bill
T
he governments of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man welcome the decision of the UK Government to defer debate of the Financial Services (Implementation of Legislation) Bill, and its associated amendments. This deferral provides the opportunity for meaningful engagement with UK Ministers and parliamentarians on the matter of public registers of beneficial ownership, in a way that does not contravene the well-established constitutional relationships between our Islands and the Crown. In particular, we want to move forward in a way that does not breach the rule that the United Kingdom does not legislate for the Crown Dependencies on domestic matters without our consent. All of the Crown Dependencies observe the highest standards of financial services regulation and transparency. We share a common policy aim with the United Kingdom of preventing international financial systems being used for criminal activity. We are committed to exchanging adequate, accurate and current information on beneficial ownership to combat tax evasion, money laundering and corruption. Our track records on this matter, including the Exchange of Notes agreement we entered into with the United Kingdom in 2016, demonstrates that commitment. We are determined to work with the UK Government, the OECD and FATF in order to develop an effective global standard that addresses the global problems of financial crime and tax evasion.

KPMG supports Digital Isle of Man’s blockchain office launch
F
ollowing the announcement by the Department for Enterprise Digital Isle of Man team at ICE 2019 and subsequent details at London’s Blockchain Conference during Blockchain Week, KPMG Isle of Man have welcomed the news stating that it is a positive and bold move for the Government. “It has been really encouraging to see the development within Government over the past 9 months where the Isle of Man have understood how other jurisdictions have approached it, and reviewed the Isle of Man’s approach, to create the blockchain office and sandbox which was announced at ICE”, said Russell Kelly, Managing Director and Head of Digital at KPMG Isle of Man. “The regulation of Cryptocurrencies and blockchain itself is a challenging area, as is always the case with emerging technology, but where we will now see opportunities, both as a firm but also as an island, is ensuring the regulatory framework is in place when used alongside banking, financial services or insurance for example.” The first ‘blockchain’ was conceptualised by Satoshi Nakamoto (pseudonym) back in 2008 and is a permanent record of transactions within a network. The network is then protected by using multiple ‘blocks’ which are individually encrypted and require all ‘blocks’ within the ‘chain’ to speak with each other when authorisation is required. For example, when used for a transaction, everything is recorded from information on the date, time, participants and amount of every single transaction, of which there could be thousands, in a secure manner. “Blockchain can appear extremely complex and there is legitimate scepticism around the safety of implementation, so it is good to see Digital Isle of Man’s response to issues other jurisdictions faced when launching theirs, how they have sought industry knowledge and now be at a stage where they can promote more widely”, continued Russell. “Applications are expected to open soon and, as a business, we are already receiving interest both within and outside of our network seeking initial advice on regulatory, compliance and digital matters relating to blockchain and digital generally. Knowing that Digital Isle of Man have their blockchain office operational will assist us when advising clients and bringing Government in at an early stage.” The KPMG Digital team, who recently attended ICE London, have both local and global expertise on hand to offer assistance when it comes to complex matters relating to cryptocurrencies, Initial Coin Offers and cyber security and blockchain.

PARTNERING WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AS AN ISLAND-GROWN FAMILY COMPANY OF OVER 27 YEARS WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON SUPPORTING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR THE SUPPORT THAT YOU SHOW US. WE SUPPLY WINES, BEERS, SPIRITS AND SOFT DRINKS TO A NUMBER OF BARS, RESTAURANTS, HOTELS AND OFFICES ON THE ISLAND, MANY OF WHICH ARE ENTIRELY EXCLUSIVE TO US. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff love to keep their fingers on the pulse of which wines are in demand, along with highlighting those hidden gems. We can create bespoke wine lists either to complement your menu, or simply to suit your customers’ tastes. Food and wine matching is one of our favourite things to do so whether it be for a one-off event or to match your permanent menu, we’re here to help and to make it that much more special. Something else that we’re really proud of is our ability to provide staff-training; it’s no good having a cutting edge wine list if your staff have no idea what they’re selling. We can give them the confidence to choose the right wine for a particular dish, or even just that snappy one liner that helps them to sell it with pride. An increasingly popular feature of many wine lists are specials or “wines of the month”, which are a great way of testing the water to see if your customers are ready to try something new and different. This is where we really get to showcase the diversity in our range, and take it as high praise indeed that many chefs will then design dishes on the basis of matching to these particular wines. Add to that our trade discounts, island wide delivery (free on 12+ bottles), and our refusal to compromise on quality and you’ve got an altogether rather attractive proposition. If you’d like to discuss your requirements with one of the team why not pop into the shop, call us on 611793 or email sales@thewinecellar.im. Another way in which we like to support
the local community is by looking after a number of corporate clients. Be it an event, office party or gifts that need sending out we’ve got something to suit every budget and taste. We offer chilled delivery, free glass hire (subject to terms and conditions), ice and buckets, and sale or return so you’ll never have to worry about running out. We also offer private tastings starting at £250 inc VAT which are extremely popular and can even serve as a great networking or team-building opportunity. We can even help set you up to host your own tasting if you’re feeling brave. Something that we’re looking to offer going forward is a loyalty/employee benefits scheme to local businesses that use us regularly. As this is still in the concept stage we’d love to invite office Managers/ events coordinators to get in touch to let us know what you’d want to get out of such a scheme. This could include discounts, tailored monthly cases, priority access to our tasting events and discounted tickets etc. Any and all ideas welcome (within reason!). To get into the spirit of things we’re having an open evening in the shop on Friday 3rdMay 2019 from 6pm so that you can see the shop, meet the team, give us your suggestions and have a taste of something delicious whilst you do. If you don’t want to wait until then or for any reason can’t make the open evening please get in touch on the details above. Life really is too short to drink bad wine and our extensive quality range covers from £5 to £200 per bottle. We are also a retail outlet so we look after private individuals as well; our trade prices apply on any 12+ bottles of wine (which you can mix and match) and our friendly team of experts are only too happy to help you find new favourites. We’ll always investigate sourcing a particular product as well you’re after something which we don’t normally stock. We’re so grateful for the support of our lovely customers and would be delighted to help out no matter what you’re planning. MARY BERRY’S ROMANO PEPPER AND HERB PENNE A super quick pasta supper. “Crispy Parma ham, red peppers and fresh herbs is such a lovely flavour combination,” says Mary Berry. “Parma ham usually comes in packets of six to seven slices - use the whole packet. Swap the ham for thin rashers of streaky bacon, if you prefer.”
MARY BERRY’S KING PRAWN AND BROCCOLI STIR-FRY WITH BLACK BEAN SAUCE
“A lovely, quick dish for a midweek meal. If you can’t find oyster mushrooms, use chestnut mushrooms instead,” says Mary Berry. Ingredients: (Serves 4) n 2tbsp sunflower oil n 2 large shallots, very thinly sliced n 2cm knob of fresh root ginger, peeled and thinly sliced n 1 fresh red chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced n 350g peeled raw king prawns, deveined n 250g broccoli, broken into tiny florets n 150g oyster mushrooms, thickly sliced n 6tbsp black bean sauce n 2tbsp dark soy sauce n Juice of 1/2 lemon n Salt and pepper
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Method: 1. Heat a large frying pan or wok until very hot. Add the oil, shallots, ginger and chilli and stir-fry over a high heat for 30 seconds. Push the vegetables to one side of the pan, then season the prawns with salt and pepper and add them to the centre of the pan. Fry for about two minutes until starting to turn pink. 2. Tip in the broccoli and mushrooms, toss together using two spatulas and fry for two to three minutes. 3. Mix the black bean sauce, soy sauce and lemon juice together in a bowl. Add to the pan and toss everything together well. Stir-fry for another two minutes until the prawns are cooked and the broccoli is just tender but still crunchy. 4. Serve piping hot on its own or with rice or noodles.
Ingredients: (Serves 4) n 275g penne pasta n 6-7 slices Parma ham, snipped into small pieces n 1tbsp olive oil n 4 spring onions, chopped n 150g roasted red peppers in oil (from a jar), drained and chopped n 1 large garlic clove, crushed n 200g full-fat creme fraiche n 1 x 30g packet of flatleaf parsley, leaves roughly chopped n 1 x 30g packet of basil, leaves roughly chopped n 30g Parmesan, finely grated n Salt and pepper
Method: 1. Cook the pasta in boiling salted water according to the packet instructions, then drain, reserving some of the cooking water. 2. Meanwhile, place a large frying pan over a high heat. Fry the Parma ham for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. 3. Add the oil to the pan, along with the spring onions, peppers and garlic and fry, stirring occasionally, for two minutes. 4. Add the creme fraiche and bring to the boil, then add the drained pasta with half the crispy ham, most of the herbs and some salt and pepper. Toss over the heat for a few minutes. 5. Add the cheese and a splash of the reserved cooking water if the sauce seems too thick, and sprinkle over the remaining crispy ham and herbs to serve.

KEEPING UP WITH LOS CABOS THE MEXICAN RESORT THE A-LIST LOVES
El Squid Roe, the biggest night club in Cabo San Luca
Celeb haunt Cabo San Lucas is famous for its raucous nightlife, but is there more to the town than just bar-hopping? Words by: Katie Wright
There’s no doubt about it, Los Cabos has a reputation.
the famous rock formations at the tip of Baja California
The name will be familiar to anyone who’s watched a few too many American reality TV shows, because this popular Mexican playground is where the casts of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, The Hills, and other LA-based shows head to on their private jets, when they want to let their hair down. Perched on the tip of Baja California, the long, thin peninsular that extends for 1,000 miles from the bottom of America’s Sunshine State, Los Cabos municipality first gained notoriety when Hollywood stars started coming here in the 1940s. One of the main coastal towns, Cabo San Lucas, still has a reputation for being a party central. With Tui starting direct 12-hour flights from the UK to SJD Los Cabos International airport in November, it will soon be easier for Brits to sample the Cabo craziness. But is it worth flying all the way to the west coast of Mexico just for a good night out? It turns out Cabo has a lot more to offer than after-dark amusement, as I discover when I jump on a speedboat at the San Lucas Marina and jet off in search of Pacific sea creatures. Every year, humpback whales travel to the warm waters around Baja California to mate, before returning to the freezing north.

Katie on a luxury catamaran trip
Between December and April, the marine mammals can be spotted when they surface to breathe. On this occasion, we’re lucky enough to glimpse a mother and baby, their dorsal fins and flukes repeatedly emerging from the waves before they dive back down into the deep. It’s a magnificent sight to see up close although there are strict rules about how close boats can get, to avoid disturbing the beautiful ocean dwellers. That’s not my only brush with local marine life during my trip. Four hundred sea lions have colonised a craggy island off the coast of state capital La Paz, a two-hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. We hop aboard a privately chartered boat to pay them a visit. Even before we see the playful pinnipeds, we hear them honking cheerfully as they bask in the midday sun. Donning wet suits, flippers and snorkel gear, we plunge into the clear blue waters to take a closer look.
e-bike tour in Baja California
With their button noses, whiskers and sleepy smiles, the adorable creatures loll and doze on the rocks, while a mother and her baby whizz about in the water beneath us. After paddling around the island, it’s back to the catamaran for lunch (tangy ceviche, fresh guacamole and tortilla chips) and an afternoon spent sipping ice-cold mimosas and lounging around, not unlike our sea lion pals. After so much rest, I go in search of something a bit more adventurous. On Cabo’s main beach, Medano, I hire a jet ski and zoom about for half an hour, bouncing over the waves and pretending I’m in a hip-hop music video.

But it would be rude to ignore Cabo’s nightlife completely. As my heart rate returns to normal, the sun is setting, and the town’s party animals are starting to stir. A typical night starts with margarita cocktails at the much-loved Nowhere Bar (nowherebar.com) on the marina before getting roped into drinking games led by an emcee at The Giggling Marlin (gigglingmarlin.com). Then it’s time to hit the light-up dance floor at the cow-themed La Vaquita, followed by R’n’B tunes down the road at Mandala (mandalacabos.com). And finally, all roads lead to El Squid Roe (elsquidroe.com), a legendary four-floor disco paradise where the crowds bump, grind and do jelly shots into the small hours. It’s all good fun, and because Cabo attracts a slightly older crowd (it’s popular with bachelor and bachelorette parties, as Americans call them), it doesn’t feel seedy, like some European clubbing spots do. Saying that, you might want to avoid the Spring Break holidays in March and April, when hordes of hedonistic teenagers descend.
Hotel Riu Palace Baja California
Apart from restaurants, the concept of a ‘quiet drink’ doesn’t really exist here, but if it’s quality cocktails you’re after, head to Vas Que Vuelas Mezcaleria.
Ziplining tour
I put the pedal to the metal again when I jump on an electric bike, adapted with extra-wide tires, to make it suitable for the sandy terrain. Speeding along a deserted beach and down cactus-lined desert trails with the wind in my hair feels awesome. On reflection, I realise it’s probably a good thing the bike’s speed is capped at 25km per hour.
Situated slightly off the main drag, this laidback, black-lit bar serves 17 types of mezcal, the smoky spirit made from the native agave plant. Painted on the wall in Spanish is a sentence that translates as, ‘I want a love that you enjoy like mezcal: slowly’. It’s hard to believe this town ever slows down, but factor in a few lazy afternoons on the beach and it is possible to feel refreshed. If you’re looking for a holiday that’s equal parts fiesta, siesta and adventure, Los Cabos will certainly float your boat.
Vas Que Vuelas Mezcaleria
But the pinnacle of my daredevil pursuits comes with a nerve-wracking but exhilarating zip line tour, zigzagging across a narrow rocky canyon on increasingly long wires and, in one case, hanging upside down like a bat.
How to get there TUI (tui.co.uk) offers seven-night holidays to Los Cabos staying at the 4T+ RIU Palace Baja California on an all-inclusive basis, from £1,183 per person (two sharing). Includes flights departing from London Gatwick airport on November 4, 2019 and transfers.
The excursion culminates in an adrenalineinducing 1.5km whoosh face-down along a ‘Superman’ line - the closest I’ve ever come to feeling like I’m flying.
TUI will be launching the only UK direct flights on November 4, 2019 - with two flights departing every week from Gatwick airport.

RED CARPET TO REAL LIFE: 4 AWARDS SEASON TRENDS YOU CAN SHOP FOR ON THE HIGH STREET With the Oscars bringing awards season to a close for another year, not only do we now have a bunch of movies, TV series and albums we need to catch up on, we’ve also got a glut of gorgeous gowns providing fashion inspiration for months to come. Whether it’s prom night, a wedding, or a glitzy party or black tie event, when it’s comes to occasionwear, dressing like you’re a celebrity for a day is what it’s all about - even if you haven’t got a red carpet to walk down and hordes of photographers shouting your name. This year, there were four key trends that emerged from the major awards ceremonies - and the good news is that you can channel them all with dresses starting from less than £50. From lush colours to sparkling fabrics, here’s how to steal the stars’ style on the high street...
Tulle
When the stars want to really make a statement on the red carpet, they bust out the tulle. Linda Cardellini’s hot pink diphem Oscars dress, and Rachel Weisz’s white Baftas confection were two of the most memorable of the season, while Margot Robbie found a way to make the flouncy fabric edgy in her embellished Chanel gown. Obviously, a white ruffled dress can look a bit too bridal, so it’s a no-no for wedding guests. But pastel colours always look pretty, or you could take a leaf out of Robbie’s book, with a dark tulle number teamed with sparkling accessories. n Phase Eight Cordelia Tiered Maxi Dress, £295 n Monsoon Elyse Embellished Tulle Maxi Bridesmaid Dress, £110 n Little Mistress Blush Midi Dress, £78

Metallic
According to research by Accessorize, gold is the luckiest colour for Academy Award nominees to wear, which might explain why metallic dresses have been so popular at all the awards ceremonies - particularly clingy column frocks like those worn by Jennifer Lopez and Brie Larson at the Oscars. A slinky sequined dress is guaranteed to make you feel like a movie star, but if bodycon isn’t your cup of tea, look for gathered or wrap style dresses in looser fabrics. n Sosandar Golden Ombre Sequin Shift Dress, currently reduced to £44.50 from £89 (shoes, stylist’s own) n Simply Be Rose Gold Sequin Kimono Dress, £75 n Roman Silver Disc Sequin Dress, currently reduced to £30 from £70
Black
Think black dresses are boring? You won’t when you see how actors like Viola Davis, Glenn Close and Thandie Newton styled theirs, choosing gowns that were black with a twist - like a big bow or embellished overlay. You can do the same, by choosing a midi dress with white ruffle detailing or an asymmetric maxi with an interesting neckline. Finish with a bold matte red lip to complete the look. n Lipsy Bardot Ruffle Midi Dress, £65; Barely There Heeled Sandals, £49, Next n Topshop Slash Jersey Maxi Dress, £75; Samira Diamante Heels, £39
Pink
By far the biggest trend from the 2019 awards circuit, there was a whole spectrum of pink on show - from Katy Perry’s powder pink at the Grammys and Helen Mirren’s rich raspberry tones, to Zawe Ashton and Gemma Chan’s voluminous neon gowns. The great thing about this trend is that there’s a perfect pink for everyone. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone when shopping - you might discover that blush looks beautiful when teamed with tonal accessories and makeup, or that a neon cocktail dress is surprisingly wearable. n Vera Month Evening Dress, £215, Betty Barclay (shoes, stylist’s own) n Lipsy Bardot Satin Panel Maxi Dress, £70, Next n Girls on Film Nava Pink Satin Slip Dress, £34, Little Mistress (shoes, stylist’s own) BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

7 SPRING CATWALK BEAUTY TRENDS YOU CAN ACTUALLY TRY AT HOME This season’s backstage beauty looks are surprisingly wearable!! Looking back at the spring/summer fashion shows, which took place in September, there were a surprising number of make-up and hair looks that could be taken directly from the catwalk and worn in real life - and that can be rare. “Free-spirited, decluttered from convention, makeup artists are exploring the concepts of realness and relatability in beauty,” said MAC make-up artist Lyne Desnoyers at the time. Lipstick, for example, is now “all about credibility rather than untouchable and unrealistic perfection,” she added. And while ‘femininity’ has no single definition these days, there was a soft prettiness to many of the make-up looks, which felt fresh when combined with more boyish elements, like brushed-up brows and messy hair.
1. PINK Pink lipstick may be an eternal beauty classic, but it’s all about rose-tinted eyes for spring, from chalky pastels at Marc Jacobs and Brandon Maxwell, to raspberry hues at Rodarte (where models’ hair was also festooned with pink roses) and flashes of neon at Mark Fast. The most wearable example? At Giorgio Armani a divine dusty rose was washed over eyelids and lips to create a beautiful monochromatic look. 2. GLITTER AND SHINE Think glitter is only for the festive season? Think again - the spring catwalks make a strong case for year-round sparkles with graphic winged eyeliner looks at Halpern and Valentino, plus the delicate dusting of silver shimmer at Simone Rocha and Missoni. The metallic foil-covered lips at Jeremy Scott and Thom Browne aren’t quite so wearable, but an iridescent lip gloss is a more low-key way to try the trend. Too Faced Glitter Pop Eyeliner Fairy Queen, £16, Cult Beauty 3. PASTEL HAIR The pastel hair trend has been huge over the last year, and evidently it’s going nowhere. Tastemaker Marc Jacobs sent his models down the New York Fashion Week runway with bouffant hairdos in a variety of beautifully soft pink and blue hues. Over in London, at the Matty Bovan show, hair was similarly voluminous and colourful, while at Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, the trend was taken a step further with rainbow ombre shades. 4. BOLD EYELINER You’re going to need a steady hand if you want to recreate spring’s coolest eyeliner looks, including the super-sharp double wing at Peter Dundas and the ‘floating flick’ seen at Rochas. Not sure you’re up to the task? Burberry’s brown smoky wing is an easier proposition, as is Dior’s splodgy ‘dancing eyeliner’. Rimmel Wonder Wing Eyeliner Black, £3.99 (from £5.99), Superdrug 5. BRAIDS Hair stylists wove all manner of beautiful ‘do’s, from delicate plaits at the nape of the neck (at Erdem) to ‘hidden braids’ as part of a wrapped ponytail (at Preen). For a softer take on the trend, at Roland Mouret long-haired models looked angelic with halo braids and tendrils falling around their faces. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
6. BIG BROWS Consider the pencil brow trend erased: Big, bushy eyebrows ruled on the SS19 catwalks, seen everywhere from Miu Miu and Moschino to Jil Sander and Stella McCartney. This look isn’t about painting on a pair of thick arches, though, it’s about enhancing what nature gave you with a microfibre gel instead of an eyebrow pencil. Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Mascara, £5.99, Boots 7. VERTIGINOUS HAIR The most hair-raising trend of the season was, quite literally, the sky-high barnets. As well as the aforementioned pastel bouffants, the most extreme example was the rigid, spiked up ponytails at Ashley Williams. Buns are having a moment as well (is that the Duchess off Sussex Effect again?), from neat ballerina styles at Burberry to big and messy at Olivier Theyskens, while Fendi and Dion Lee’s relaxed styles were somewhere in between.

FIRST DRIVE: WHAT IS IT?
As great British automotive success stories go, they don’t get much better than McLaren’s. In little more than nine years, the firm has accelerated from generating ‘just’ £6m a year in revenue from its car business to these days racking up more than £800m annually. That meteoric rise has been largely thanks to its core super series range, which the 720S Spider joins as the latest member. Launched in 2010 as the MP4-12C - taking the Ferrari 458 head on - the core of McLaren’s supercar range has evolved into the incredibly accomplished car you see here.
WHAT’S NEW?
With a clever folding roof, designed to collapse in one gracious movement in just 11 seconds, the 720S Spider lets owners drop the lid at speeds of up to 31mph. It’s a stunning design that once lowered - an action that takes place in near silence - allows the exhaust note to fill the cabin. And when the roof’s up, it has another trick up its sleeve: An optional electrochromic glass panel can be specified that rapidly changes between tinted and transparent at the touch of a
50
button, letting drivers enjoy the skyline even with the comfort of the roof in place. To further aid the design, McLaren has created the flying buttresses - those aerodynamic wings that extend out behind the rollover bars - from glass, which not only look stunning but also increase visibility when the driver looks over their shoulder.
WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?
McLaren’s tried-and-tested 4.0-litre twin turbo-charged V8 produces 710bhp and 770Nm of torque. Those heady figures are enough to propel it to 60mph in 2.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 212mph with the roof shut and 202mph with it down. The addition of the roof - despite the extra 49kg on the overall kerb weight - has had little effect on performance. The Spider will still hit 124mph in just 7.9 seconds - a 0.1 second blink of an eye less than the Coupe. A standing quartermile is completed in 10.4 seconds - again, just 0.1 seconds slower than its hard-top equivalent.
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
Importantly, the removal of the roof hasn’t compromised handling. Thanks to the same carbon tub from the Coupe used here - the Spider was developed alongside its hard-top sibling from the start - there’s no discernible difference in rigidity. It rides superbly, soaking up even the nastiest of bumps on our Arizona test drive. On the road the 720S is an accomplished supercar. The seven-speed automatic gearbox shifts cogs in milliseconds and is an absolute joy to use in manual mode. The carbon paddles are mounted on a rocker, a pull on the right lever depressing the left, and vice versa. F1 technology has been used to cut the ignition spark to improve shift changes too, which is especially noticeable on down shifts. Several drive modes can be selected, depending on your mood, with gear shift, steering, transmission and electronic safety nets all modified to suit. Comfort, sports or track options can be selected that dramatically alter the car’s behaviour.
ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE
HOW DOES IT LOOK?
With those dramatic glass flying buttresses, stunning frameless dihedral doors and active rear spoiler, the 720S Spider looks every bit the supercar. McLaren engineers have focused on form going hand in hand with function as regards the design. Sculpted around the air intakes that cool the engine and brakes, it’s purposeful and visually arresting - pedestrians stop, gawping as it rolls past like something from outer space.
WHAT’S IT LIKE INSIDE?
It feels like there’s a little less room inside the cabin - taller people might find themselves cramped in both the driver and passenger seats. The multi-adjustable seats just don’t seem to have enough adjustment to get truly comfortable. That said, the cabin is a plush place to spend time. There’s a choice of four leather interiors, with a leather steering wheel, eight-inch infotainment system and a cool folding digital driver display that tucks away to reveal just a rev counter when ‘track’ mode is selected from the dynamics panel. The latter offers multi-adjustment of the driver aids, turning the 720S Spider from comfortable cruiser into rabid race car at the twist of a dial.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE? Those jaw-dropping doors, LED headlights, twin stainless-steel exhaust and five-spoke alloy wheels all come as standard. Other highlights included are dynamic stability control, dual-zone air con and keyless entry. There’s plenty to choose from the options list, though, like that electrochromic roof at a whopping £7,500, special Aztec Gold paint (£4,330), carbon seat backs (£3,280), Bowers & Wilkins audio system (£3,640) and the potential to spend many thousands more on optional carbon-fibre extras. It all depends how deep your pockets are.
VERDICT
FACTS AT A GLANCE Model: McLaren 720S Spider Power: 710bhp Torque: 770Nm Max speed: 212mph 0-60mph: 2.7 seconds MPG: 23.2 Emissions: 276g/km Price: £246,990
There’s little doubt how important the super series range has been to McLaren and its current crown bearer is an incredible machine. The 720S is bonecrushingly quick and simply more than you’ll ever need on the road. It’ll appeal to a certain set of buyers, though. In direct competition with the likes of the Ferrari 488 Spider and Lamborghini Aventador Roadster, buyers will need to want something very different from the crowd to opt for the British bruiser. McLaren may have faced complaints in the past that its cars lacked ‘soul’ compared with the establishment, but that’s simply not true. The 720S is an ultra-focused and high-polished supercar that deserves a place among the greats.

This can enable you to relax and fully experience your journey - from home, to helicopter, to jet, to yacht, the choice is yours. Go anywhere, see anything. The best thing about a helicopter is that it’s not a plane. You can land almost anywhere since you don’t need a runway - and we really do mean anywhere. You can go heli-skiing in the Alps, heli-fishing in the Pyrenees, heli-cycling in Scotland, heli-rafting in Provence, and heli-dining in some of the best restaurants in Europe. You can arrive in style and avoid the hectic masses at the Monaco Grand Prix, Cheltenham Races, Glastonbury Festival or even the TT Races on the island. By embarking it on your yacht, you can expand your world into the realm of heliyachting, island-hopping in the Caribbean and Hawaii or touring places like Greenland and Alaska. Heli-yachting is not a new concept, but it has evolved tremendously over the last 20 years. At Luviair, we have many years of experience coordinating Heli-yacht operations, with our client helicopters on the back of yachts cruising all over the world. This is vital to ensure that your transition from the air to the sea is completely seamless. With the amazing technological capabilities of today’s helicopters, you can fly in more conditions than ever before. Instruments enable you to fly at night and in adverse weather conditions. This does not mean you

can fly in any conditions, but you can rely on us to get you where you need to go in total safety and security, when other modes of transport get stopped in their tracks. Safety and Security The levels of privacy, discretion and security that surround a helicopter are almost unparalleled. It is contained to you, your team and your operator. You can avoid the crush of the commuter throngs so often populating public transport networks. Behind the scenes, your operator has ensured that your helicopter is perfectly maintained, your pilots are expertly trained, and your operations officers have eyes on the journey at all times. In the hands of an operator like Luviair, you won’t see any this. All you need to do is step aboard. We will handle the rest. All the ways to fly A helicopter is meant to be flown. It works best when it is being used. If you are flying less than 150 hours a year, maybe full ownership isn’t the best way to go. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t get in the air. If you want to fly every now and then, charter flights are an ideal solution. This is just like booking a taxi: where shall we pick you up, where do you want to go and when would you like to leave? If you think you’ll be flying more regularly, but can’t justify the commitment to your own aircraft just yet, you can consider leasing one. Another popular route is to participate in a fractional ownership scheme. This is where you own a piece of an aircraft, along with a group of other enthusiasts, or perhaps split amongst a group of friends. Many large corporations have a corporate helicopter, owned by the company and used to carry executives between meetings. Alternatively, if you want the exclusivity and flexibility of your own aircraft, but would like to offset the costs, you can list it on our Air Operator’s Certificate, and make it available for charter. Again, choosing the right operator is crucial to guarantee your helicopter is in the hands of someone you trust and someone who will put your needs first.

THE COURTHOUSE NIGHTCLUB
SHINING LIGHT ON A PULSATING SPECIAL SPACE Here’s a question for you. What do two of London’s most iconic live music venues, the Royal Albert Hall and Sadler’s Wells, have in common with Douglas’s very own Courthouse Nightclub in Athol Street?

The obvious answer is that they are all places where people like to be seen. But more specifically, they share the distinction of having some of the technologically most advanced lighting ever used in the entertainment industry; lighting that has never been seen before on the Isle of Man – until now. The Courthouse Club has created history! A subject we’ll return to a little later. What it all signals is that the Island’s premier night time venue is back with a bang. Following a major refit, the coolest, smartest place to be seen in town is once again pumping up the volume. Three months has elapsed since the drills replaced the music. But it had to be done. Incredibly, in the ten years since the crowds first started flocking to The Courthouse Club dance floor, there has only ever been minor tinkering with the building. Now, after a complete overhaul, the place has been reinvigorated and looks better than ever. The city club vibe returns! “A complete refurbishment was overdue but it has all been worth it,” said General Manager Stew Dillon, who knows only too well the significance of the revamp, to ensure The Courthouse retains its position

as the Island’s numero unonight time attraction. Having been in management at The Courthouse since day one, he recognises better than anyone what the paying public expects. “A major makeover was no less than the club deserved and we certainly owe it to our loyal customers, who’ve been packing the place out just about every Friday and Saturday night since we first opened,” he reflected. A magnet for big name DJs Over the last decade, the club has reverberated to a fantastic mix of music, featuring some of the top DJs in the business, including Carl Cox, Judge Jules, DJ Yoda, Lisa Lashes and Norman J. Performers of this calibre are sure to be back – with more big names in the pipeline. A-Skillz is already booked for the TT, for instance. The young crowd, out for a good time, will always remain the Club’s primary audience. But not to the exclusion of all others! The new interior lends itself to eclectic musical tastes, so it can work just as well for jazz evenings, unplugged nights and special themed evenings. Everyone familiar with the club’s original

design will be blown away by the transformation. No stone, or rather area of flooring, has been left unturned to ensure the completely reconfigured venue works perfectly from the ground up, with its classy, geometric striking lines. A visually stunning experience that’s positively Blade Runner-esque! The bar itself is a stand out attraction in its own right. Nearly 40 feet of multi-faceted, prismatic, white diamond surfacing that’s both practical and user-friendly. For seating, there are now nine individually coloured booths, varying in size accommodating a total of 55 people, with the biggest booths taking up to eight at a time. And as for that lighting – well, the best thing is to see it for yourself! A fully interactive, dynamic colour-changing LED system that reacts with the sounds and vibes of the DJ. Better still, it’s been designed to draw you to the heart of the action on the dance floor. And because it’s so versatile, for anyone wanting to use the club for a private function, the lighting can be easily adapted to suit the mood or theme of the occasion. So if you want pink throughout, you can have pink throughout, or a colour to match your corporate identity. The class act behind the lights are GDS, who’ve made a name for themselves illuminating top entertainment venues across the world, including the previously mentioned Royal Albert Hall and Sadler’s Wells. Isn’t it fantastic that the Island’s premier night club is the first project they’ve got their teeth into on the Isle of Man! The overall result: 2500 square feet of pulsating, captivating special space - a multi-purpose venue that’s sure to tick all the entertainment boxes.

scheme and look after our entire visual and audio system. The superb quality audio equipment has been supplied by Martin at Adlib, providing the club with some of the best sound clarity available anywhere on the market.
“Our team of contractors have been brilliant, but a special mention has to go to Lisa Chadfield, our architect from Studio C, and interior designer, Gemma Wasley, from Rehab Squared who have both been instrumental throughout this journey. And to Justin and Ricky at Event Lighting Services, who have supported us forever and have programmed the GDS lighting
“I may be biased, but I think the results give us a club that looks amazing and will be a real talking point.
