ifting; it’s a proper thing now with added pressures and expectations. Didn’t you know, It’s all got very complicated, because your choice of which gift you give, can say as much about you as; what food you eat or wine you drink or books you read etc. Gone are the days when a smellies gift set from the chemist would do rightly. That same set now reflects your whole personality. The set is presented in moulded non-environmental plastic, the bottle is impossible to recycle and the scent does not truly bestow the correct hues to summarise the recipient’s desire to both smell nice and feel calm in this angst ridden world. You must now aim for a very personal approach, perhaps re-create a cherished memory or collect a bag of rubbish from the beach, and fashion it into a thought provoking sculpture, to show how much you care. On the other hand, a bottle of Jo Malone or a voucher for a nice restaurant usually goes a long way. Whatever you do, just be aware that you will be heavily judged. As always, we don’t really care what kind of gift-giver you are, as long as you enjoy what we are offering on these glossy and glamorous pages then we can all remain friends although, to be fair, we suspect that all you discerning readers have probably totally nailed it in your usual effortless way. If it is ‘gifting experiences,’ you’re after, rather than something you can wrap up, then, there is a lot to choose from in the next few weeks. The ‘This is Winter,’ exhibition is running until March and offers a plethora of photographs exploring island life in the winter months. Not surprisingly, there are plenty of family options on offer too, including, Groudie Glen Railway Santa Trains, an Isle of Man Orienteering Family Fun Event on the 26th December or the Port Erin Christmas Carol Concert which is totally environmentally friendly and won’t break the bank! Happy Holidays to you and yours. SR

MY PROM

THE SOUND OF THE FESTIVE SEASON RANG OUT INTO

THE STREETS OF DOUGLAS PROMENADE Find all you want for Christmas on Douglas Promenade When it comes to finding the perfect Christmas gift, we’re all too often drawn into the online world of internet shopping, tempted by the ease of it all; excelling in scouring sites for coupons and deal codes, losing hours to infinite scrolling before totting up basket totals and questioning our risk appetite - do we run the risk of not having the family’s gifts delivered in time for Christmas? Online shopping has its perks but what’s Christmas shopping without feeling the warm glow of the illuminations take the chill from your face; a festive-spiced coffee from an independent coffee house; or the unrivalled satisfaction of retiring to a local restaurant or bar with friends when the weight of your shopping bags make your arms tire. Christmas is coming together. Once upon a time Christmas was a time to spend with family or friends. To rekindle those magical moments; investing in time with your nearest and dearest, there’s nowhere better to ring in the holiday season than Douglas Town Centre. Family time is something that online shopping simply can’t deliver. Keeping the spirit of Christmas in mind, we took to the streets of Douglas for the key shopping event of the year, the Christmas Lights Ceremony sponsored by Manx Telecom, to see what Douglas Promenade has to offer and to find inspiration for our own Christmas days out from those who are revelling in good food and good company in one of the great bars, amazing

food in a great choice of restaurants, lovely hotels and more! We joined Sarah, the Saunders Family, and Ben and Amy to find out how they make the most of a Thursday night in Douglas Town Centre…. Late-night shopping is an annual tradition for Sarah and her girlfriends… Before heading into the town centre to meet friends after work, Sarah freshens up from a day in the office, with a stop at Utopia Hair Salon and Purite Beauty Rooms for a wash and blow dry and Christmasinspired manicure. Under an hour later, Sarah is on her way to tackle the shopping street, armed with a list and an open mind. Her closest friends join her in solidarity, ready to take in the Christmas lights and find this year’s musthave gifts. “Late night shopping is something that me and my friends really make an evening of. We look forward to it every year and it’s become a true Christmas tradition for us.” Ladened with shopping bags, Sarah, Sophie and Jess walk over to La Piazza to escape the bustle of the shopping street, and for a much-needed pre-Christmas turkey detox – time to reflect on their purchases and catch up on Christmas plans, before a digestif in

Bordello’s and a short taxi ride home. Utopia is located on Castlemona Collanade alongside Christopher’s Dry Cleaners and Mojo’s Chippy. Temporary parking provision is available in the Castlemona Hotel car park or alternatively, you can park in the Best Western Palace Hotel & Casino for £1 for 4 hours. Combining both the dog and date night, Ben and Amy have an alltogether approach to Thursday’s during the holiday season…

Tonight Ben and Amy are heading out of town after the light ceremony for a relaxing meal at The Empress Brasserie before retiring to the Piano Lounge to make a real night of it. Living in Spectrum Apartments, The Empress is a firm favourite when it comes to a quick and easy mid-week meal. Today they’ve booked their King Charles Spaniel Bret into Vanity Fur on Marathon Terrace for a pre-Christmas groom, to coincide with the Christmas Markets.

ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

MY PROM

Vanity Fur is open until 6.30pm weekdays so Ben and Amy can finish their Christmas shopping knowing Bret is in safe hands. “Bret loves the ladies in Vanity Fur; and for Christmas he comes home spritzed with a Christmas cologne and card for mum and dad. The extra hour gives us the opportunity to get the last of the Christmas presents and stock up on unique gifts you can only find at the Christmas markets.” This year the Christmas Markets will take place on Villier’s Square from the 14th – 15th December. For more information, please visit myprom.im. Take in the Christmas lights – The Empress is a short walk from Douglas Town Centre (8 minutes on foot).

Christmas is a family affair for the Saunders Family… Douglas Town Centre ticks all the boxes for the Saunders family. On late-night Thursdays Gill and Chris take their children to town for some of the most enjoyable family nights out of the year. “Christmas is a busy time for all the family, we get precious little time together between party invites and other commitments, but Thursdays are a time when we can all come together.” The Saunders embrace the true spirit of the holiday season, using they’re Thursday to catch up as a family. After taking in the lights, their off to The Windsor Coffee Co on Loch Promenade. Here they enjoy Italian pastries, white chocolate and

raspberry hot chocolates, Bailey’s salted caramel latte and an adventurous dad tries a butterfly blue tea for its brain boosting benefits (but don’t take our word for it; best try one for yourself). “You can find your own space and relax a little at Windsor Coffee. The kids love the festive hot chocolates and it’s a great way to keep the kids happy between errands – everyone’s happy.” The Windsor Coffee Co is open until 10pm during late-night shopping dates throughout December. Try one of the independent Cafes and Coffee Houses on Douglas Promenade including The Italian Job, Café Villa and The Candy Store.

During December, you can enjoy 25% off food in The Empress Brasserie and Piano Lounge from 4.30pm - 9.30pm Sunday to Thursday. Stay the night for £55.00 for a double room when you eat in. (Excludes 24, 26 and 31 December).

JUNIOR FOOTBALL GROWS APACE WITH SUPPORT OF PWC Junior football in the capital is continuing to go from strength-to-strength with the support of professional services firm PwC Isle of Man. It has renewed its sponsorship of Douglas Athletic Football Club (DAFC) juniors for a third year, during which time the club has quickly built-up its grassroots offering. Since starting training sessions in 2016 for children from school reception age, DAFC is now coaching around 80 youngsters each week right through to year five pupils. One of the DAFC junior coaches, Lee

Shields, said: ‘It is amazing to think we now have 11 dedicated FA qualified coaches, growing from just two when we began the junior programme three years ago. It has expanded so quickly we believe it is the fastest growing junior football set-up on the Island. ‘To have 80 children registered on our books across five age groups means we now hire two sports halls throughout the winter to accommodate our numbers, so the support of PwC is invaluable towards meeting that cost, as well as a new kit for our under 10s team.

STEAM PACKET COMPANY SUPPORTS TRAVEL FOR TWO MOUNTAIN VIEW INNOVATION CENTRE CHARITABLE EVENTS The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has assisted with travel for two special charity events which were organised by local firm AFD Software and held at its Lezayre headquarters, Mountain View Innovation Centre. In September, Spring Harvest Local visited the Island for the first time, providing teaching, resources and encouragement for churches as part of an autumn tour of the British Isles. More than 300 people attended from across the Island, from many different churches - both traditional and contemporary. Then, to celebrate 10 years since AFD Software donated a special bush aircraft

16

for use by the charity Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) in Borneo, the charity visited the Island with its ‘Rescue Challenge’ to enable local schools, churches and families to engage with its important work and understand how the Isle of Man has made such a difference for people on a far remote island. The interactive challenge allowed young people to experience what it’s like to work and serve in some of the most remote places in the world, using ‘reallife’ scenarios through flight simulator technology that offer an insight into some of the challenges MAF’s pilots may experience on a day-to-day basis.

PARISH WALKER EDWARD RAISES £11,700 FOR MANX STROKE FOUNDATION Edward Kelly from Onchan raised over £11,700 for the Manx Stroke Foundation by taking part in this year’s Manx Telecom Parish Walk. The 38-year-old suffered a severe stroke in October 2002 at the age of just 21. Initially the stroke left him quadriplegic (paralysed from the neck down) on a breathing machine, and only able to communicate by a system of blinking. Now, years later walking even a few yards requires every ounce of his energy and determination – but in this year’s Manx Telecom Parish Walk he managed to cover just short of two miles from the start at the NSC to Braddan. He used his four-wheeled walking frame (which he calls ‘Roy Walker’ after the former Catchphrase host), and was encouraged along the way by many friends and supporters. Edward commented: “I want to thank all those who donated and for all their kind words. Special thanks goes to the Manx Telecom Parish Walk committee for their support, Chris Cale from Up and Running for helping select appropriate footwear, Kate Stobart from Rehablab physiotherapy for performing acupuncture for pain relief, my physio Janet Lawrinson for ongoing support, my work colleagues at RL360 who raised over £2,000, to my wonderful support crew Lesley Patterson, Olivia Newstead and Nick Shimmin, and even to the real life Roy Walker who sent kind words! On the whole it was an unforgettable experience that made all the time and effort worthwhile.” ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

THE STEAM PACKET COMPANY GIVING BACK EACH YEAR THE ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET COMPANY PROUDLY CELEBRATES THE ISLAND’S WONDERFUL DIVERSITY IN ARTS, CULTURE, SPORT AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT THROUGH ITS WIDE-RANGING SUPPORT OF INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS, EVENTS, CHARITIES AND GOOD CAUSES. With the start of a new year just around the corner, we’re looking back over the past 12 months to some of the recipients of its gifted travel support, showcasing just a small selection of the wonderful initiatives supported by the Steam Packet Company. The Performing Arts With such a thriving arts scene in the Isle of Man, the Steam Packet Company is always pleased to help it flourish. Earlier this year it assisted 29 young, talented dancers from both Ny Hellanee Dance Troupe and Gena’s Dance Academy to twirl, shimmy and jive at the Ultimate Dance Showcase UK in Liverpool, returning home with some excellent results. It also offered discounted travel to Isle of Man Cathedral Choristers to sail to Liverpool to participate in a joint Choral Evensong with the Choir of Liverpool Cathedral, an experience they described as unforgettable. Ever proud of the excellent theatre scene the Isle of Man boasts, it supported local amateur dramatic group Rushen Players as it flew the Manx flag at the 2019 British All Winners Festival in the UK, showcasing the high standards that the Island holds in the arts to a spellbound audience. Throughout the year the Company also helped numerous productions spring to life on The Gaiety Theatre Stage by offering its assistance in transporting cast, props and sets. In 2019, it supported Douglas Choral Union’s hilarious musical production of Spamalot, Taylorian’s Singin’ In the Rain and what is widely considered as one of the greatest ballets of all time, Swan BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

In November, it provided free off-Island ferry travel to Drop Inn Ministries Isle of Man, as it travelled to Romania with a jam-packed van to deliver and distribute humanitarian aid and Christmas shoeboxes to hundreds of underprivileged people in Eastern Europe. Throughout the year the Company also offered its support to a number of animal charities including CHANCE Animal Rescue and Greyhound Aid League Isle of Man. Both of these groups have helped neglected dogs find new loving homes in the Isle of Man. ISLE OF MAN SAMARITANS IS GIVING THE GIFT OF LISTENING THIS CHRISTMAS Samaritans understands that the festive period can be a difficult time for some, which is why volunteers from the Isle of Man branch of Samaritans are doing their bit to ensure the service is kept running for those in need throughout the Christmas break. Its 50+ volunteers will be taking hours out of their own family time and commitments to lend an open ear to those who need it. How you can give the gift of listening too Samaritans is also asking all of us to try and give the gift of listening this Christmas, and you don’t need to be a Samaritans volunteer either - there are lots of other ways you can help those around you. Try encouraging friends and family that are going through a difficult time to open up and talk, or just let them know you’re there if they need support, you can make a bigger difference than you might realise. Whether you invite a loved one to meet up

for a coffee, hit the shops for a mooch around town, book tickets to a film at the cinema or even just pop around to say hello – giving your time and being there for those who need someone really matters, and small gestures can have an amazing impact. If someone you know is struggling, please let them know about Samaritans. It’s a completely free service that offers confidential emotional support in person, by telephone, email and text. Volunteers are available to talk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is anonymous to call on 116123 or you can email jo@samaritans.org. Want to do more? Could YOU be a listening volunteer? Samaritans listening volunteers are there for anyone who needs them. Collectively they answer more than five million calls for help each year, calls which can change the course of someone’s life. But many calls to Samaritans go unanswered because there aren’t enough volunteers. That’s where you come in. Ask yourself the three questions below. If the answer is yes, perhaps becoming a Samaritans listening volunteer is right for you. n Are you interested in listening to people going through a tough time?

n Are you open-minded and nonjudgemental? n Are you able to listen without telling people what to do? I f so, Isle of Man Samaritans would love to hear from you. For more information about volunteering opportunities with the local branch of Samaritans, contact Samaritans@manx.net. Spreading Christmas Cheer Samaritans local volunteers have also set up a Christmas Choir and will be heading out and about in the community over the festive period spreading Christmas joy and raising funds and awareness of the charity’s work. Keep an eye out for them and join in the fun!

TOP 10 WAYS TO MAKE MONEY IN RETIREMENT

So, you’ve made it to retirement. All those years dedicated to the 9-5 have finally paid off and now it’s your time to finally sit back and relax, right? Whilst doing not very much at all might sound wonderful in theory, in reality you may soon find yourself twiddling your thumbs. It might even be the case that your retirement just isn’t living up to expectations; perhaps you don’t have enough money to fund the lifestyle you imagined, or to check-off that bucket list of amazing holiday destinations. Thankfully, retirement doesn’t have to spell an end to growing your income, and in fact, you more than likely have the means to make money right at your fingertips! The first step is realising that there is value in the hobbies that you love, and numerous opportunities to capitalise on sharing your lifetime’s worth of knowledge and experience.

FEATURE

So, without further ado, here are 10 smart ways you could be making money in retirement.* Lead guided tours Family, friends and your doctor will agree that staying active and healthy is an important feature of any happy retirement. The good news is that adhering to this lifestyle can pay dividends, not only for your health, but in real income too. This is typically a seasonal occupation, but getting out and about as a tour guide could see you earning money in exchange for sharing knowledge of tourism hot spots and the best kept local secrets. Walk dogs and board pets Taking on paid work to walk dogs really is as simple as it sounds! You arrange to pick up the animals, take them for a walk (usually at least 30 minutes long), and return them home again. Similarly, if you have the time and the space, you could extend your services and offer to board pets whilst their owners are absent or temporarily unable to care for them. For animal lovers, this really is an ideal way of filling your time and your wallet! Teach music or a language If you can read this, congratulations you have language skills! Whether you speak one language or several, from English to Mandarin, it’s possible to capitalise on your skills by becoming a teacher. And it’s not just languages that are in demand! If you have talent in music and the arts, for example, then you are in possession of some very lucrative skills. Best of all, starting a tutoring service is also incredibly flexible and allows you to tailor the work to fit your own lifestyle.

Write freelance This is one for both the veteran authors, and also the long aspiring writers who just never had the time. If you have a way with words then you could be sitting on a second career as a freelance writer. Freelance writing is a perfect way for you to indulge your interests and set your own schedule. Start editing and proofreading Do you love to read? Do you regularly find yourself spotting spelling and grammar mistakes – maybe in books, menus or even on shop-fronts? Are you a selfprofessed grammar nerd? If so, you already have the credentials to start your very own editing or proofreading business. Like freelance writing this is one that you can fit around your post-retirement lifestyle, taking on as much – or as little – work as you wish. Blogging Yes, really! Blogging isn’t just one for the kids, it’s very easy to set up and millions of people, across all age groups, make moderate to substantial incomes from it. Whilst you shouldn’t expect to make money overnight, a little hard work and dedication could see your blog turning a tidy profit. This can be through advertisements, selling your own products, or writing sponsored posts. Not only this, but there is no limit to the subject matter of your blog so it can serve to complement your interests, and even help you find your voice postretirement. Become a referee or a coach This is one for the big kids at heart! Even if you find yourself more of a spectator these days, as long as you possess moderate physical fitness, and good overall knowledge of the game, then a coaching or referee post might be the perfect fit for you! Check out positions as a coach, referee or scorekeeper in high school programs, or in various youth and amateur leagues. This is the perfect opportunity to earn a wage whilst also keeping your hand in with a sport you love.

find your home has a few spare rooms. Perhaps you’ve even come to the conclusion that peace and quiet isn’t all it’s cracked up to be! If you also want to make some extra income then consider advertising your property on holiday rental sites like Airbnb. Airbnb is a good place to start as it streamlines the whole process by putting you in contact with interested parties, and ensures that you are firmly in control of the important things like charges, availability, and house rules. If all goes well you could even find yourself ready to set up your own B&B. Rent out your car Now you’ve heard of renting a room, or even your entire home, but have you considered doing the same with your car? If your car spends more time idling on the driveway than it does on the road, this is the perfect opportunity to drive some cash your way by renting out your vehicle. Start selling on eBay Whether you aspire to sell in bulk, or simply want to declutter your home there’s money to be made on eBay. There’s no denying that it’s a crowded market out there, but if everyone and their cat is making a profit on eBay then what’s stopping you? The website is a great platform both for those looking to test the waters of selling online, and for users who just want to shift some unwanted items and make a little extra money on the side. *The information contained in this article is for general information purposes only, and you should not use it as a basis for making business decisions. Any action taken upon the information listed in this article will, of course, require that you undertake further independent research and use your own judgement. AN IMPRESSIVE £16,000 RAISED AT ANNUAL CHARITY EVENT More than 100 guests attended Equiom’s seventh ladies lunch for the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group (MBCSG) last month, raising over £16,000 for the charity - bringing the total raised to date to £103,000. The funds raised this year will go towards the replacement of the cold caps used by cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment at Nobles Hospital. The cold caps reduce the amount of chemotherapy medicine that reaches the hair follicles and with less chemotherapy medicine in the follicles, the hair may be less likely to fall out. The event, which was once again held at Portofino Restaurant in Douglas, and supported by Mario and his fantastic team, featured an auction, luxury hamper prize draw and a raffle, presented by Equiom’s Executive Chair Sheila Dean. More than 30 unique prizes were kindly donated by a wide range of businesses and individuals. Sheila Dean, commented: ‘It was another fabulous event and I am so grateful to all of those who contributed prizes for both the raffle and the auction. Now in its sixth year, the ladies lunch is always greatly anticipated and I am once again hugely grateful to our very generous guests. As patron of the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group, it really is incredible to see the difference our fundraising makes to local patients. I would like to say a massive thank you to all of those who helped to make this event such a huge success.’

MONITORS4KIDS BALL

A Monitors4Kids Ball, sponsored by the Ramsey Park Hotel, has raised more than ÂŁ13,000 for the cause. The event took place at the hotel and featured a magician, live music, raffle and auction. Monitors4Kids is a parent-led campaign supported by the Manx Diabetic Group. The aim is to raise ÂŁ120,000 over two years to fund blood glucose monitors for all type 1 diabetic children in the Isle of Man. The campaign ends in July 2020 and the children will receive their free monitors up to the end of December 2020. Meanwhile, campaigners are lobbying the government to put the technology on prescription so that type 1 diabetics no longer have to give themselves ten to 15 finger pricks every day.

‘DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY’ Words: Suzy Holland Images: Hebe and Teo Atzori (portrait of Teo by Lauren Kinnin)

Sound advice to give to anyone, but I wonder if Hebe and Teo Atzori’s parents realised how far this philosophy would take their children? Hebe (now 25) and her younger brother Teo (21) were born in London but grew up in the Isle of Man and Winter Wanderlust at Mother T’s in Laxey is their first joint exhibition. Although neither of their parents are artists – they are proprietors of Mop Hair in Douglas (‘hairdressing is an art form in itself’ says Teo) – they encouraged their children to express their creativity in any way they wanted, and to ‘do what makes you happy.’ And for both Hebe and Teo that was illustration. They both went to the college (now UCM) for the two year Art & Design Diploma – although not at the same time - and then went to art school further afield (Falmouth and Liverpool) to specialise in Illustration. Hebe describes herself as a digital artist (although one who also creates hand-drawn murals to commission). Teo, who graduated this year, works in a more traditional style, using watercolour and other painting techniques for his own illustrations. This exhibition of brand new work is a riot of colour. Teo’s naïve paintings are straight out of a children’s picture book where every winter is crisp, cold and most of all, snowy. In contrast Hebe lets her mind wander to lands far away where the colours are vivid, and yet the atmosphere is calm. But they both reflect that much overdone phrase, well-being – whether it’s enjoying Teo’s deep, crisp and even snow on the hills or a more internalised mindfulness of Hebe’s pictorial travelogues. Hebe has completed a number of murals for private clients and if you attend yoga classes at the Karma studio in Douglas you won’t have missed her mural which covers an entire wall. Her distinctive style echoes the calm atmosphere of the classes

and, once again, is a pictorial vision of mindfulness and being ‘in the moment’. Teo’s work is smaller and, although his ‘Flying Above Port Erin’ featured on the IOM Arts Council Facebook page earlier this year, you may not have seen any of his paintings. Ultimately, he says, he’d like to illustrate his own children’s books and if you go along to Winter Wanderlust, you’ll immediately see this is not just an idle wish thought, but an achievable ambition. Juan Moore, who now heads up the BA Hons Visual Communication degree course at UCM, taught both Hebe and Teo and was always impressed by their work ethic: “I’m delighted, but not surprised, to see them both doing so well and exhibiting together,” he says. “I’m pretty sure this isn’t the last time we’ll see an Atzori exhibition here on the Island, but this one, their first, is not to be missed!” Valerie Miller of Mother T’s is delighted to be hosting Winter Wanderlust: “Although we’re a small venue, the intimacy makes Mother T’s ideal for exhibitions of this kind,” she says. “Hebe and Teo are such a talented pair, and their relative youth means that their work isn’t particularly well-known so this is a great opportunity to introduce them not just to our regular customers but also to the wider Isle of Man art world.” Winter Wanderlust is the most recent of a series of exhibitions at Mother T’s. In the last few months Valerie has curated the first exhibition from new graduate Lorna Smith, prints from Graihagh Betteridge (Betty Prints) and work by macramé artist Sandra Donnelly (Forget-Me-Knots). If you’ve not been to Mother T’s – and why not? - it is a real community asset: the café and gift shop is open during the day, when everyone is encouraged to just hang out, read, play board games and even use the sewing machine and there is a regular evening schedule too, with chess nights, storytime, film nights and a monthly women’s circle.

HEBE ATZORI

TEO ATZORI

But back to the art, and Valerie’s ambitions for the gallery part of the venue. “I always wanted to encourage local artists to display their work in Mother T’s,” she says. “As we become better known as a gallery our exhibitions are becoming more and more popular because most people love the opportunity not just to view the work but also to talk to the artists. There’s no pressure to buy, but we all know that if you feel a personal connection to a piece of art it will have pride of place on your wall for years to come. I’m thrilled that Hebe and Teo chose to hold Winter Wanderlus there and know that this exhibition will be incredibly popular.” BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

KARMA STUDIO

Winter Wanderlust is on now at Mother T’s, New Road, Laxey until 28 December. Opening hours Wednesday 12 – 4pm, Thursday to Saturday 10am – 4pm but check www.facebook.com/MotherTeas for any evening events.

The club welcomes experienced and novice riders and offers a comprehensive training and support programme (see their website for details of upcoming events, taster sessions and spectating opportunities).

A YOUNG PRETENDER IN THE ‘SPORT OF KINGS’ Words by: Clare Payne Photography: Clare Payne & Elaine Dewhirst

Who is Zevi? Forteen-year-old Castle Rushen student Zevi Sansbury has been named ‘Polo Player of the Year’ by Triskelion club and is rapidly building a well-earned reputation for his skill, tenacity and determination. A novice player only two and a half years ago and still Triskelion club’s youngest member, he is now their top scorer!

What equipment is required? Polo players need protective gear; helmet; face guard; gloves; knee pads and leather boots and the ponies are also provided with leg guards to prevent injuries.

What do Zevi’s coaches think? Zevi’s coaches Cameron and Fraser have been extremely supportive; recognising and nurturing his talent from the outset. His agility and skill and early comprehension of the game stood him out as an asset to the club from his first few chukkas and his technical ability has improved with every season. Zevi competes comfortably with his adult teammates and often outmanoeuvres them with his nimbleness and determination. My Polo Verdict! My prior experience of polo was limited to clips of the Princes: William and Harry in the media, and of it’s rather snooty portrayal in movies (that scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts’ character Vivian is made to feel outclassed at the pitch-side being of particular note!) but within minutes of being in the company of Zevi, his family, his coaches and his teammates, I realised that my initial conceptions could not have been more wrong. Triskelian are a friendly, sociable, encouraging bunch and the sport itself is energetic, thrilling, and so far from my elitist preconception. I was so taken by the team spirit that I’ve already booked a trial session for myself!

Even outside the Polo season, Zevi rides at least three times a week and spends hours training and caring for his ponies, Gonza and Mamita (poignantly named after Zevi’s late Grandmother). Keen and optimistic for the future, he is passionate about the sport. What is Polo? The oldest of all equestrian sports, Polo was introduced to England in the 19th century by the military serving in India and soon gained the sobriquet ‘The Sport of Kings’ for its appeal to nobility and royalty. A fast, competitive sport where opposing teams of four members on horseback attempt to score goals at opposite ends of the field or pitch, armed with lightweight mallets and a wooden ball, the game provides an unusual amalgamation of speed, grace and precision. The riders display skill and determination but the horses are also prized for their agility, endurance and intelligence and seem to enjoy the sport as much as their riders. Their speed in manoeuvring is breath-taking. The game is divided into ‘chukkas’ and is umpired by two mounted riders.

Although a polo pony is an obvious essential (although with the introduction of hobby-horse jumping events around the country I doubt hobby-horse polo will be far behind!) you don’t need a horse of your own to take up the sport with Triskelion; they have several team ponies within their care who are more than happy to take a novice out for a spin.

Who are Triskelion? A diverse and passionate bunch, they train and compete throughout the year, with the summer seasons enjoyed outdoors at their purpose built pitch in Ballaugh and the winter season played indoors.

What’s next for Zevi? To enable Zevi to pursue his successful career in this most demanding of sports he has so far relied on the tireless support of family and the Triskelion club, as well as official club sponsors Foraging Vintners. He has personally invested heavily in equipment and his two ponies and is now actively seeking sponsorship to take him to the next level in competition. If you are able to support Zevi in this venture please contact Triskelion to discuss sponsorship. With your support who knows where this young Manx rider’s dreams may take him!

years of raising standards together at KPMG eGaming Summit

A

special anniversary edition of the KPMG Isle of Man eGaming Summit was recently held to celebrate the 10th birthday of the high profile series that started on the Island in 2010. This year’s eGaming Summit was built around the theme of “Raising Standards Together for 10 Years” and looked back over the past decade, with a packed agenda featuring key industry speakers from the Island and beyond.

48

Chief Minister Howard Quayle commenced proceedings, remarking on the eGaming sector producing nine years of consistent growth and having doubled its contribution to the Island’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), now representing a 21% sector share of the Island’s economy. Acknowledging the landscape has changed since 2010, and will continue to change, new licences are being granted and new services are being launched which paints a picture of an evolving and forward-looking ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

jurisdiction. Mr Quayle added ‘eGaming has remained one of our shining stars’. Simon French from Bixteth Partners followed, with his version of ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’, exploring 10 years of mergers and acquisitions in the gambling and betting sector. He then joined the first panel session ‘Continuing Consolidation’, exploring M&A activity and trends, led by Kristan King, Advisory Director at KPMG Isle of Man. Through the course of the day, local industry experts were invited to tell their ‘IOM Gaming’ story from 2010 to 2019. Garth Kimber from Xela Holdings and David Black from Continent 8 were the first to look back on their progress and were later joined by Bill Mummery (Celton Manx), Warwick Bartlett (GBGC), John Coleman (Microgaming) and Lyle Wraxall (DfE). Digital Isle of Man CEO, Lyle Wraxall reflected on the success of the eGaming sector on the Isle of Man over the past 10 years and attributed it to the Island’s ability to adapt. “The agility of our regulator was, and still is, instrumental to the establishment and growth of the sector and alongside this, ancillary businesses have embraced opportunity and provided an ecosystem around eGaming, resulting in the Isle of Man being known as a top tier jurisdiction for eGaming businesses.” Looking to the future, Lyle said, “Whilst we continue to welcome new businesses to the Island, in a maturing market such as eGaming, our focus must also shift to helping support the growth of businesses on-island. Alongside supporting organic growth, we should adopt new technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence to enhance and diversify our offering in the eGaming space.” “Digital Isle of Man is here to drive collaboration and form closer strategic partnerships. Most importantly, our aim is to create the right environment for our digital sectors to flourish.” Dan Waugh from Regulus Partners then presented on responsible gambling policy, followed by Lyndsay Wright, from William Hill, who gave a talk on ‘Addressing public concerns: one company’s perspective’. Lyndsay joined the second panel of the day, led by Adam Rivers from KPMG UK, to explore best practice and industry collaboration to protect gaming customers. After an enjoyable lunch with beautiful panoramic views in the Snaefell Restaurant, delegates returned to the conference room to hear Lydia Barbara’s ‘Technology for Good’ presentation. The third panel of the day, Regulation and Enforcement, was led by Richard Williams from Keystone. Wes Himes from BGC then looked to the next 10 years for the sector, followed by Russell Kelly (KPMG IOM) leading the final ‘Industry View’ panel, where Lyndsay Wright (William Hill), John Coleman (Microgaming), Wes Himes (BGC) and Magnus Grinneback (Mayfly) were invited to reflect on topics covered during the day BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

and offer their views on the sector’s current and future environment. Minister for Enterprise Hon. Laurence Skelly MHK made a closing address congratulating KPMG for an excellent event and affirming the Government’s commitment to maintaining the Isle of Man as a premier jurisdiction and worldclass location for eGaming business. Commenting after the event, Russell Kelly, senior partner at KPMG Isle of Man said: “It was a true meeting of minds to celebrate our 10th eGaming Summit. Thanks once again to our speakers and industry experts for their support and we thank them for their very constructive

“It’s clear the industry has undergone major change since the first summit in 2010. This year’s event received over 300 registrations, more than any other eGaming Summit, representing a continued interest in the event and indeed the sector.”

usiness communications provider, plan.com, set out its ambitious growth plans for 2020 at its staff.live event in November, with new product development, technological innovation, a brand – new office, and employee recognition and reward high on the agenda. In a twist on the typical employee updates, the telecoms provider, who was last year named the fastest growing UK tech company by The Sunday Times Hiscox Tech Track 100 and ranked 7th on the Sunday Times Best Small Companies to Work, transformed an empty warehouse into a private theatre complete with DJ booth and bar for the after party. CEO, Dan Craddock, took centre stage where he outlined the 12-month business plan in front of a 90-strong crowd, with a live video stream for those unable to attend in person. Kevin Perks, Head of People Operations at plan.com, said: “Our people are the focus at plan. com. Without them, none of our achievements – past, present or future – are possible. We strive to put them front and centre, and staff.live is the perfect place to do just that.” He continued: “It’s great to bring everyone together away from the office, to hear all about the opportunities ahead and celebrate the year’s successes. A huge focus this time was the launch of our brand – new employee performance and reward system, which aligns our business plan with the career aspirations of our people, giving them a clear progression and reward framework. It’s exciting stuff!” plan.com has gone from strength to strength since partnering with network giant O2 in 2014, with sales increasing by 364% in the first three years and headcount reaching over 90 in the Isle of Man office alone. This growth is set to continue and they are always looking for exceptional people to join the team. Visit plan.com/careers or email jobs@ plan.com for more.

Celebrating 120 years on the Isle of Man is a significant milestone and it was a pleasure to celebrate this with our valued clients who have supported us over the years. ‘This year alone we have seen a number of positive changes within the Isle of Man office as we welcomed two new partners, Tom Brook and Garry Manley. As well as being involved in multi-jurisdictional deals with our colleagues from across the Appleby global network, we have also continued to act on some of the biggest Isle of Man deals and cases.

‘Looking forward, doing business on the island will remain at the core of our strategy and we look forward to continuing to work with our local and international clients going forward.’

6 SEASONAL SERVES FROM BROTHERS AND AWARD-WINNING MIXOLOGISTS JOE AND DANIEL SCHOFIELD Award-winning mixologists, brothers Joe and Daniel Schofield have worked in some of the best bars in the world - and now they want to share their recipes and secrets so fans can enjoy them at home. “There are thousands of cocktails you can make and so many different recipes for them and techniques you can use, that it can seem intimidating when you’re simply at home and want to mix a great drink,” they admit in their new book, Schofield’s Fine And Classic Cocktails.

(Asterley Bros Estate English Vermouth), 2 dashes orange bitters (Regans’ Orange Bitters No 6), 4 dashes sugar syrup, orange coin for garnish. Method: Add all the ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir. Strain into a coupette, garnish with an orange coin and serve.

“However, we have spent a lot of time throughout our careers constantly adjusting and improving, so this collection of recipes is, in our humble opinion, the way we personally think they taste best.” Like the sound of that? We’ve rounded up six seasonal serves, with the brothers’ recommendation on which spirits to use... 1. Adonis Created around the mid-1880s in honour of the Broadway musical of the same name - the first, in fact, to run for more than 500 performances - the Adonis is a true classic of the American cocktail bar. We like to add a touch of sugar syrup as sugar is a great flavour carrier and works well here, enhancing the relatively subtle sherry and vermouth. You won’t find this extra touch of sweetness in traditional versions of the drink, but we like how it underscores all the flavour notes. Additionally, we prefer to use oloroso sherry instead of the more traditional fino, as it plays well with the other ingredients. The sweet complexity of the oloroso adds much more to the drink. Ingredients: 30ml oloroso sherry (Gonzalez Byass), 30ml sweet vermouth BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

2. Breakfast Martini This was created in 1996 at The Lanesborough Hotel in London, when the legendary Italian bartender, Salvatore Calabrese, was persuaded by his wife to swap his usual breakfast of an espresso for one of toast and marmalade. A few hours later, in the Library Bar, this cocktail was born and instantly became a modern classic. This recipe is kindly provided by Calabrese himself. Ingredients: 50ml gin (Tanqueray), 15ml Triple Sec (Cointreau), 15ml lemon juice, 1 bar spoon (5ml) thin-cut orange marmalade, shredded orange peel for garnish. Method: Add all the ingredients to a shaker and mix to incorporate marmalade into other ingredients. Add ice and shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass, garnish with orange peel and serve.

any spirit - any type that has spent time in a barrel tends to work best. Ingredients: 50ml bourbon (Woodford Reserve), 25ml fresh lemon juice, 15ml sugar syrup, 25ml egg white, Angostura bitters to garnish with a stripe. Method: Add all the ingredients to a shaker and dry shake, followed by a wet shake (with ice). Strain into a chilled coupette, garnish with an Angostura Bitters stripe and serve. 3. Espresso Martini Originally called a ‘Vodka Espresso’, this drink was created in 1983 by Dick Bradsell at the Soho Brasserie in London for a guest. During the 1990s, it became better known as the Espresso Martini and, in our humble opinion, it’s one of the best drinks to have been created in the last 50 years. It’s beautifully simple and is now one of the most popular drinks around the world. Works great with rum or tequila as a base too!

6. Mai Tai This was created in 1944 by Victor Jules Bergeron, aka Trader Vic. He made it for his friends, Ham and Carrie Guild, and after the first sip, Carrie purportedly said, “Mai tai-roa ae”, which in Tahitian means, “Out of this world, the best”.

Ingredients: 35ml vodka (Grey Goose), 15ml coffee liqueur (Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur), 10ml sugar syrup, 25ml fresh espresso, three coffee beans for garnish. Method: Add all the ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake. Strain into a chilled coupette, garnish with three coffee beans and serve.

We like to use two different rums as the blend creates a lovely complex flavour, similar in profile, apparently, to the original rum used all those years ago. Wray & Nephew 17 soared in popularity with this drink and quickly became unavailable. However, the drink also works well with any type of aged rum, if the blend isn’t at hand. 5. Boulevardier This wonderful Negroni variation is yet another fabulous creation by Harry MacElhone at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, who made it for a fellow ex-pat, Erskine Gwynne, who at the time edited a monthly magazine called The Boulevardier; hence the name. Our version calls for a little bit extra of the hero spirit, bourbon, so as the Campari and sweet vermouth don’t overpower its flavour.

4. Whiskey Sour This classic belongs to the sour family of cocktails and is a simple and delicious drink. Created in the 1850s, it wasn’t until almost 50 years later that egg white became an extra addition. Some recipes list it as optional, but we like to include it as we think it helps round out the flavours. You can also switch out the bourbon for scotch, applejack, cognac or pretty much

Ingredients: 25ml Jamaican rum (Appleton Estate Reserve 8 Year Old), 25ml aged agricole rhum (Trois Rivieres VSOP), 30ml lime juice, 10ml orange curacao (Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao), 10ml orgeat (Small Hand Orgeat), 1 dash Angostura Bitters, lime wheel and mint sprig for garnish. Method: Add all the ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass, garnish with a lime wheel and sprig of mint and serve.

Ingredients: 40ml bourbon (Basil Hayden’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon), 20ml sweet vermouth (Martini Rosso), 20ml Campari, long orange peel for garnish. Method: Add all the ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir. Strain over ice into a rocks glass, garnish with orange peel and serve. Tip: For a wonderful variation, try the Old Pal. Swap bourbon for rye, sweet vermouth for dry and serve straight up with a lemon coin.

Extracted from Schofield’s Fine And Classic Cocktails: Celebrated Libations And Other Fancy Cocktails, by Joe & Daniel Schofield, published by Kyle Books, priced £15.99.

HOW TO MASTER A MATTE RED LIP IN 3 EASY STEPS

Pick your pout: 5 red lip looks from the AW19 catwalks 1. EMILIA WICKSTEAD Taking inspiration from the character Mary Corleone in The Godfather movies, make-up artist Lucy Bridge designed three looks for the Emilia Wickstead show, one of which included a bright blue-toned red, using a Suqqu Matte Lip Crayon. n Suqqu Matte Lip Crayon, £24, Harrods n Suqqu Lip Defining Pencil in Dark Red, £14, Selfridges

“A bold red lipstick is a classic look that started its real journey in the early 1900s and since then, has always been seen as a powerful, dominant look,” says Sascha Jackson, lead make-up artist at Stila. Here, Jackson explains how to create the perfect bold pout, plus we give you the inside scoop on how to create five catwalk lip looks...

2. LOUIS VUITTON This deliciously dark red came courtesy of make-up legend Pat McGrath’s MatteTrance Lipstick in Guinevere.

1. PREP “To truly rock a red lip, you need to start with a good base. Firstly, I like to exfoliate the lip. “I like to make my own lip scrub, using a little coconut oil and some sugar. Mix them together and work into the lip to sloth off any dryness. “Once done, remove all the excess scrub you don’t want the coconut oil to upset the staying power of the lipstick.” 2. LINE “Next, I will take a little of the liquid lipstick I’m using onto a fine lip brush, and use this to line the lips.

That shade is now sold out, but you can get the look with the similarly vampish Vendetta. n Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick in Vendetta, £37

3. HELMUT LANG Make-up artist Susie Sobol used Maybelline’s Red For Me on the diverse cast of models at Helmut Lang, which she describes as “a universally flattering, classic red that works with all skin tones”. n Maybelline Color Sensational Made For All 382 in Red For Me, £7.99, Superdrug 4. REJINA PYO At London Fashion Week, Lord and Berry make-up artist Niamh Quinn wanted to erase even the slightest hint of shine on the lips at the Rejina Pyo show, so she layered the brand’s China Red with loose powder to give an ultra matte finish. n Lord and Berry Vogue Lipstick in China Red, £17 5. VERSACE Another Pat McGrath creation, the dark red matte at Versace was teamed with beautifully clean skin and a sharp cat-eye liner flick. n Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick in Elson, £37

“My favourite ever red is Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso - it’s a ‘true’ red. The formula locks in and lays down smooth, and won’t bleed or feather. “Using a small amount as a liner first enables you to create the desired shape of your lips i.e. build slight natural volume by working it just over the bridge of the lip line.” n Zoeva Precision Lip Brush, £9, Cult Beauty 3. FILL “Next step is to fill in, working the product across the lip. A little goes a long way, so you do not need too much - the less product you use, the more comfortable the finish will be. “Let your lips dry, and don’t ‘smoosh’ them together, just let the formula lock in and it will last up to 12 hours.” n Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso, £17

MOTORING NEWS MEET THE DEALER Dan Bentham - Vehicles.im

Give us a bit of Vehicles.im background! When did it all begin? Where do I start with this one?! Ok, well roughly 3 years ago I was getting numerous phone calls from a recruitment agency in Guernsey asking me If I was happy in my current position as Sales Manager at Athol Garage. To that I replied "yes, more than". At the same time my personal circumstances changed, I was going to become a dad for the first time. My partner informed me that she wouldn't be getting maturity pay, meaning money might be tight. A week or so later the recruitment agency called again and made me an offer I couldn't refuse, so I accepted. I only lasted 1 day!!! I knew straight away I wasn't going to be able to give them what they expected from me. The trouble was I was placed on 2 months gardening leave when I left Athol. Now what - I thought to myself? Over the next couple of weeks, and having spoken to my family friends and acquaintances within the Motor Trade, I could only come up with one solution, it was time to go solo. I had a long chat with my mum who happily agreed to financially back me. This was my green light. We got 11c Snugborough Trading Estate in Union Mills and with the help of many hands managed to turn it back in a garage again. Opening for business on 1st April 2017 (April fools day!). What types of car do you sell? Are you selective? We sell a wide range of vehicles trying to cater for everyone from tradesmen, with our light commercial range, family and first time vehicles, and also some sporty little numbers. We also offer vehicle sourcing for customers who are more specific with their requirements.

when I came back it wasn't going to be to work in an office. On my return I picked up the courier and found a job at Mann Autohaus (BMW Dealer) as a Service Advisor - and the rest as they say is history - I'd found my trade. Where’s the furthest you’ve driven in one go, to where and for what reason? Nothing to exotic I'm afraid. However, I once bought a MK1 VW Golf off ebay without even seeing it. Southampton of all places!!! Bare in mind this car was 20 years old! The first 10 miles was fine. But I spent the next 10 hours doing 30 mph in the slow lane as it kept over heating. Two wheels, four wheels or more wheels, and why? Both, I grew up racing on 2, its good to compete at a young age, I think it gives you drive and makes you want to succeed throughout life. I have a small collection of motorbikes. I’m hoping one day I'll have time to play on them again. But for now it’s soapbox racing. It's so much fun and doesn't take up to much time. Any future plans for Vehicles.im? Hmmm?! That's an interesting one. What we have achieved so far has surpassed my expectations. I'm not really a "dream big" sort of guy. And I believe in "if it ain't broke don't fix it". What we have going on is enough and enjoyable, I wouldn't want to bite off more than I can chew. I look forward to going to work everyday and I wouldn't want to take to much on. A life/work balance is hard to find but I'm slowly getting there.

Do you offer additional services/finance? We are a Conister Bank approved partner and our relationship with them is great, both personally and professionally. Plus we try and keep business as local as possible. What was your first car? Flipping heck, why would you bring that up? Ha ha, It was a Fiat Uno I shared with my Mum... Its was Orange, terrible! What got you into selling cars? Good question, when I first left school I did what all my friends did and got an office job. And although it was safe, well paid, and warm, it never felt like something I could see myself doing for the rest of my life. Although it took me 7 years to realise this. I quit and went travelling for a couple of months but I knew

:: Honda reveals most powerful Fireblade yet Honda has unveiled its hugely powerful new Fireblade. Designed to challenge the Ducati Panigale V4R for superbike supremacy, the new Fireblade packs 215bhp from a 999cc inline-four engine. Weighing just 201kg with fluids, the Fireblade has been graced with a variety of mechanical and styling upgrades over the older bike. The engine has been given a new top end while a diamond-like coating has been applied to the cams, helping to reduce friction and improve performance. It allows the bike to produce 26bhp more than the older Fireblade. Launch control is included as standard and the throttle has been updated for faster response when at part throttle. Honda has yet to announce pricing for the new Fireblade, but expect this to appear over the next few months.

Set to arrive on UK roads next year, just 3,000 examples of the hot hatch have been slated for production. The car has yet to be revealed, but demand will surely be high for a model that has traditionally played a role as the run-out model for its respective Mini generation. Little has been confirmed about the car so far, but we do know it will be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 302bhp. That puts it equal with the latest Mini Clubman John Cooper Works for the title of the British firm’s most powerful car ever.

2020 MANX TELECOM PARISH WALK 2020 ENTRIES NOW OPEN

HOP-TU-NAA PADDLEBOARD PARADE 2019 Photos by Jim Gibson at Ellan Vannin Images And Mary Davies

Entries for the 2020 Manx Telecom Parish Walk opened on December 1 and there are discounts available for anyone who signs up before January 31.

The Island’s most popular mass participation sporting event will start at 8am on Saturday June 20 at the NSC in Douglas. Entry before January 31 costs £35 – walkers who are Manx Telecom mobile customers will also receive an additional £5 discount, thanks to the event’s title sponsor, if they enter before that date. From February 1 to March 31 the fee is £40, from April 1 until the final closing date on May 10 it is £50. All entries must be made online at parishwalk. com The 2019 race was won by Liam Parker. Emma Shilling won the women’s race and finished seventh in the overall standings. 158 walkers completed the full 85 mile distance within the 24 hour time limit. Most of the walkers had targets to reach at least one of the checkpoints along the course – a total of 1,341 made it to Marown, and more than 900 got to Peel. In total, entrants in the 2019 event covered over 51,000 miles – that’s double the earth’s circumference! Manx Telecom has been the Parish Walk’s title sponsor since 2012, but the company’s support for the event goes back to 2007 when it began sponsoring the official timing and results service. Manx Telecom Parish Walkers starred in the finale of this year’s Isle of Man Newspapers Awards For Excellence when 60 competitors appeared on stage at the Villa Marina. Joining them on stage was Race Director Ray Cox who received a Lifetime Achievement award for his outstanding contribution to the event. Ray has played a leading role in the development of the Manx Telecom Parish Walk since he became Race Director over 20 years ago.

ANNOUNCES SANTA’S ON A BIKE 2019 One of the most anticipated events of the festive season is set to make its return to the Isle of Man this year. Taking place on Saturday 14 December, and hosted by telecommunications provider, plan.com, Santa’s on a Bike will see hundreds of motorbike fans gather at the TT Grandstand for a mass ride out and festive celebration all in aid of Rebecca House children’s hospice. Nicola Patterson, event organiser and PA to plan.com CEO, Dan Craddock, explained:

“Last year we saw over 200 Santa’s take part and we’re hoping for even more riders and spectators to get involved this year. The Isle of Man is the home of motorcycling, so it’s the perfect place to bring everyone together to spread some festive cheer in aid of such a worthwhile cause.” Steven Downward, Marketing Executive for Hospice Isle of Man added: “Santa’s on a Bike is such an exciting event to be a part of and we are extremely grateful for plan.com’s support. Last year was a real spectacle and certainly one of the highlights for the Hospice team, especially when the ride out came passed Rebecca House. It was incredible to watch and we can’t wait to welcome even more Santas this year!” The festive fun will kick off at 10am with food, drink and entertainment for all of the family at the Grandstand. The bikes will set off for Castletown Square at 11am prompt, returning via the Rebecca House, for a noon finish back at the Grandstand where the family-friendly festivities will be in full swing.
