WORDS | Lisa Haynes

T

HERE ARE MANY THINGS WHICH MAKE ME CRINGE. PEOPLE USING THE WORD ‘CLASSY.’ BACK FAT INDUCED BY AN ILL-FITTING BRASSIÈRE. EMOTICONS. BUT NOTHING, NOTHING COMPARES TO THAT QUINTESSENCE OF CRINGE - THE HAPPY COUPLE.

The Cringe

Firstly, I would like to assert that I am not antiValentine’s Day. I myself am fortunate enough to have a very nice chap who has unwittingly found himself to be my current love interest. However, I have never been a girly girl. When a friend of mine was regaling a dinner party with a tale involving her boyfriend, a bath and rose petals, I was vaguely repulsed. I clearly lack the soppy gene. As a result, I take issue with those Happy Couples who give contented twosomes a bad reputation, meaning we are labelled gross or hideous. Or even ... smug.

...This kind of activity is something which they think is adorable. However, for the rest of us, it’s just another awkward reminder that they are engaged in sexual relations.

ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

PUT A STAMP ON YOUR STYLE The worst is when you find yourself uncomfortably close to a couple and they are indulging in a lengthy saliva-exchange. We have reached typical scenario number three: you are standing in a queue behind Happy Couple. They’re probably buying matching cashmere jumpers. Having completely lost interest in paying for knitwear, Happy Couple are occupied with a spot of tongue-wrestling. He probably has both hands cradling her chin. And THEN, having managed to stop yourself from doing anything more violent than clearing your throat, they will break the hermetic seal of their lips and, apparently amazed at their proximity to the cashier, turn back to you and apologise. No doubt with beatific smiles plastered all over their self-satisfied faces. Wankers.

We get it you’re having sex. No-one cares.

Going for a jolly public boob-squeeze? Refrain. Is your loved one’s tie slightly askew? Leave it. Want your partner to try some of your food? They can can use their own cutlery.

Similarly inappropriate behaviour also occurs when seated. Let’s take typical scenario number two - you are seated at a pub/eating establishment with Happy Couple ensconced on the other side of the table. One of them will inevitably appear to have their hand in the other one’s crotch. The hand may well just be resting on their partner’s upper thigh (still cause for disapproving frown). Clearly, this is a gesture with which they are perfectly comfortable and they would never see as inappropriate. Either that, or they think no one can see and should be barred from the establishment indefinitely. This kind of activity is something which they think is adorable. However, for the rest of us, it’s just another awkward reminder that they are engaged in sexual relations.

Preheat the grill until very hot. Lightly toast the bread on both sides, then spread with butter. Grate the chocolate on top and return to the grill briefly to melt. Remove and immediately put the bacon under the grill until the edges are crisp and caramelised. Place on top of the chocolate

eating something sweet and indulgent at teatime is compulsory. But he’s hoping chocolate lovers will also begin to be more experimental, which is why he’s included savoury recipes in his book Adventures With Chocolate published in paperback by Kyle Books, priced £14.99.

Put a jug of water to chill in the fridge for half an hour. Place all the dry ingredients (including any flavourings) in a large bowl and mix well, before rubbing in the butter until evenly combined.

HERE ARE FIVE RECIPES TO WHET YOUR PARTNER’S APPETITE THIS FEBRUARY 14...

Gradually add enough refrigerated water to form a pliable dough; this must not be too sticky, so be careful when adding it. Knead the dough

25g basil 150ml light extra virgin olive oil Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon 1/2tsp sea salt 60g pine nuts 100g pecorino cheese, grated 25g Venezuelan 100% dark chocolate, grated

(Makes 2 main course portions) For the Gnocchi: 65g plain flour 20g cocoa powder 1/2tsp chilli powder (choose your preferred heat level) Pinch of sea salt 325g cooked mashed potato (floury-textured potatoes work best) 1 egg yolk 1tbsp extra virgin olive oil To serve: 200g mascarpone Freshly ground black pepper 10g fresh oregano leaves 25g pecorino cheese, grated

and finish with a generous crumbling of Stilton. Lay the remaining buttered slice on top and press firmly. Cut diagonally and enjoy.floating, remove from the water and place on kitchen paper to drain. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and cook the gnocchi on each side. They should look golden and be springy to the touch. Remove from the pan and keep warm. Season the mascarpone with black pepper and mix well. To serve, place the gnocchi on warm plates with small spoonfuls of the mascarpone, and grated pecorino and oregano leaves sprinkled over the top.

In a large mixing bowl or food mixer, blend together the flour, cocoa, chilli powder, salt and mashed potato. Add the egg yolk and knead to form a smooth dough; if using a food mixer, then use the dough-hook attachment for this stage. Wrap the dough in cling film and rest in the refrigerator for one hour.

Place all the ingredients into a small blender - or use a pestle and mortar - and blend until you reach your preferred texture - chunky or smooth, or somewhere in between.

To shape your gnocchi, cut the dough into two and begin to roll a long

Spoon the pesto into a sterilised jar, seal and keep airtight. Stored like this, the pesto will keep in the fridge for a month. Once open, use within one to two weeks.

... A MIND AND BODY OVERHAUL

A beautiful country house perched in the hills of North Yorkshire, with delicious food served by a personal chef, doesn’t really sound like the setting for a boot camp. But throw daily eight-hour training sessions with two army soldiers into the equation and a stay at Lifestyle 247 quickly becomes hard work. Bollywood Bootcamp is one of several courses offered by the fitness company at their five-star house in Settle. Three days before guests set foot in the house, they’re sent a detox plan to do at home. It’s a great way to kick-start your diet and get you in the right frame of mind for the boot camp, with consultants offering guidance by phone and email. On arrival at Settle station (45 minutes by train from Leeds) participants are told to change into their running gear and are then dropped at an ‘undisclosed location’ to meet their trainers. During a gentle two-mile walk to the house, trainers Jay and Justin give a run-down of the week ahead.

TOP TIP: Be aware that customisation can take longer than your average clickbuy-and-deliver product. If you’re buying for a present, ensure that you leave enough time.

Days start early at 5.30am with military exercises, cardio, weights and more military exercises! Jay and Justin incorporate teamwork into some of the sessions, to keep up morale, and also do regular fitness tests. Afternoons are spent doing Bollywood dance classes, learning a routine to be performed on the final day.

25g light muscovado sugar (more if you like it sweet) 20g dark cocoa powder 100g Caribbean 66% dark chocolate Spice of your choice, e.g. chilli, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom or ginger

A sample day starts with a warm-up at 7am in the beautiful surroundings of the National Trust park near Worksop in Nottinghamshire, followed by cardio circuits in the hotel’s grounds and a circuit of an Army-accredited assault course (complete with camouflage jumpsuit). Other activities include aptly named “suicides”, shuttle runs, flipping 30kg tractor tyres, speed ladders, mini hurdles and rope-climbing.

MAZAGAN BEACH & GOLF RESORT, CASABLANCA, MOROCCO The festive season seems a whole world away from Mazagan’s spa, sun and seafood lifestyle. Situated on the northern coast of Morocco, next to a seven-kilometre white sand beach, the destination spa is the perfect setting to refresh the mind and body.

There’s also the opportunity to hike to Malham Cove, where scenes from Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows were filmed. Days finally end at 6pm with an ice bath (incredibly painful, but extremely necessary) and a dip in the hot tub (divine).

You can even air your spring/summer ‘13 wardrobe with temperatures ranging from a mild 17 to 30 degrees all year round.

But fitness isn’t the only focus at Lifestyle 247; the idea is for people to leave feeling and looking fantastic.

The setting, treatments and techniques are inspired by the surroundings, with products created in Morocco and active ingredients including Argan oil, north African prickly pear seed oil, Sahara sand and local sea salts.

In-house psychologist Lesley, who uses similar techniques to Paul McKenna, teaches valuable techniques to deal with stress. Guests are also treated to Cavisculpt sessions, non-surgical liposuction that melts away your lumps and bumps.

Unwind in the vast marble and mosaic traditional hammam, then choose from a menu of sensory treatments. A highlight is the Mazagan Escape, a salt and oil full body exfoliation.

Another plus point is - surprisingly - the food. Chef Miranda prepares a selection of fabulous dairy, gluten and wheat-free treats. Everything she uses is locally sourced and organic.

Afterwards retreat to the relaxation room, with windows looking out to sea.

Lifestyle 247 certainly isn’t an easy ride, but if you want to start a new fitness regime this is the place to do it.

It would be easy to switch off completely at Mazagan but there are also opportunities to be active.

Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas Mark 4. Roll the dough on a well-floured surface to 3mm thick (or thereabouts). Use a round cutter to cut out circles of your preferred size, e.g. a 2.5cm cutter for canape-size biscuits, or 5cm for cheese biscuits. The standard 155mph limit can be raised to 174mph or 189mph, while the standard exhaust system can be made more vocal at the touch of a button. A further step is a throaty sports exhaust system from the options list which increases bass, tone and volume even further, making the most of the sonorous V8’s talents.

Season the mascarpone with black pepper and mix well. To serve, place the gnocchi on warm plates with small spoonfuls of the mascarpone, and grated pecorino and oregano leaves sprinkled over the top.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox takes the strain from the engine and transmits it to the road in dramatic fashion via quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The system also includes torque vectoring, which has been used to great effect on cars like the RS 5, and a complex arrangement of differentials to distribute the power to the wheels that can best use it. The RS 7 will also have RS-specific air suspension as standard, while UK models will wear 20-inch wheels. Larger versions are available as options. Also optional is a Dynamic Steering setup, which allows drivers to manage the actual steering ratio and assistance levels, giving greater response for a giving turn of the wheel or a lighter action for more slower, more relaxed driving. Although the RS 7 will be comprehensively equipped, almost all the most desirable features, like the 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, will be optional. It is likely that configuring the car to a point topping £100,000 will be very easy.

A unique graduated paint finish, solid sterling silver Aston Martin badges on the wings with ‘trans flux’ enamel inlays and a special brand hallmark define the exterior, while on the inside buyers can enjoy ‘Deep Soft Black’ leather upholstery, which was previously only seen on Aston’s outrageous One-77. The seats also get contrasting silver thread and special silver thread embroidery of the Aston Martin wings in the headrests, all placed next to solid sterling silver door sill plaques individually numbered with an Aston Martin hallmark. Each Centenary Edition model will also be supplied with a presentation box containing a number of exclusive gifts to mark the first 100 years of the company. These include two glass keys, two bespoke key pouches made from leather matching the car’s interior trim, solid silver Aston Martin cufflinks, a solid silver Rollerball pen and high quality Bang & Olufsen headphones. It will also contain a silver polishing cloth to ensure that the precious metal maintains its lustre. The paintwork will need great care, being made with a special technique that adds 18 hours onto an already 50-hour process. Prices for all the Centenary Edition Astons are available only on application at one of the firm’s 146 dealerships across the globe. Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez explained: “Clearly, the centenary of Aston Martin is a great occasion for our business, our customers, and our fans around the world. “It is only right, then, that we have developed these exceptional Centenary Edition models which will, I am sure, quickly become highly desirable and sought-after.”

VAUXHALL ANNOUNCES CASCADA PRICING PRICES HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED FOR VAUXHALL’S NEW CASCADA MID-SIZE FOUR-SEAT SOFT-TOP, REVEALING THAT IT UNDERCUTS ITS MAIN TARGET, THE AUDI A5, BY ALMOST £8,000. The range will start from £23,995, rising to a peak before options of £29,115. A host of new technologies and engines are specified to push the Cascada upmarket as far as possible.

High specifications across technology, safety and luxury have been linked with an entry price much lower than that of the bigselling Audi in an attempt to break into what has historically been a difficult market sector for mainstream affordable brands like Vauxhall. Two trim levels will be offered: SE and Elite. SE cars are fitted with 18-inch wheels and a ‘sport chassis’, LED tail lights and multiple input types for the stereo system. Elite adds luxuries like leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, and front fog lights. Elite spec will start at £26,095 on the road.

The flagship engine in the range is the new lowrevving 1.6-litre SIDI Turbo Ecotec petrol, which Vauxhall claims offers major improvements in power, torque and driveability. In the Cascada it will produce 168bhp and 207lb.ft, with peak output stretched from 1,650rpm to 3,200rpm. The SIDI engine will cost at least £26,505. The diesels are an immediately available 2.0-litre, 163bhp turbo and a 192bhp BiTurbo unit from the Insignia, both of which produce CO2 emissions of 138g/km. Prices will start at £25,495 for the single-turbo diesel and £29,080 for the BiTurbo, which is only available in Elite trim.

At the centre of all of this is Represent Dance Company, established 5 years ago and now firmly established as the place to go to learn the real deal on Street Dance on the Isle of Man. With classes for everyone from 5 to 50, there’s something for everyone – and it isn’t all headspins and acrobatics! The most important thing we teach is how to move with rhythm and express yourself freely – its incredibly good fun and most importantly, its very easy to learn...even if you think of yourself as having two left feet.

Automatic gearboxes can be specified with the 163bhp diesel, while a six-speed auto is standard on the SIDI petrol engine.

OVER THE LAST 18 MONTHS, THE ISLE OF MAN HAS HOSTED A U.K. STREET DANCE CHAMPION, A DANCER FROM A WORLD FAMOUS BREAKDANCING CREW, AND THE FOUNDER OF THE U.K.’S LARGEST HIP HOP DANCE ORGANISATION. DANCERS FROM THE ISLAND HAVE TRAVELLED OVER TO ENGLAND TO BATTLE – COMPETE – WITH DANCERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, AND JUST LAST MONTH A GROUP OF DANCERS FROM MANCHESTER VISITED THE ISLAND TO SEE FOR THEMSELVES WHAT WE’RE UP TO ON THE ISLE OF MAN.

Two petrols and one diesel will be available to order from the car’s launch, with a second diesel arriving soon afterwards. A 138bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine is the cheapest and achieves nearly 45mph with CO2 measured at 148g/km.

He added: “The chance to own and enjoy such a stunning piece of Aston Martin’s heritage is made all the more rare by the fact that we are limiting numbers to just 100 of each model line. I am sure supporters and enthusiasts of the brand worldwide will be anxious to secure their chosen model quickly!”

Street Dance started in the late 60’s, inspired by the funk music which was popular at that time and representing a cultural melting pot of rhythms, movements and expression that, in the words of many of it’s pioneers, “saved a generation”. People are often surprised, when faced with the negative message at the centre of much of today’s hip hop music, that the founding ideals of the culture were “peace, love, unity and having fun” - ideals that we promote with the young people who come to us to learn, along with self expression, self-confidence and a healthy lifestyle. One of our most dedicated dancers, Andy O’Neill, has this to say about where dance has taken him: “I’ve been dancing for about 6 years. During this time I’ve seen things develop so that now we have a real scene for young people on the Island to get into. Without dance I would be a different person; I have learnt how to dance but also become part of a community. Now I am sharing what I have learned with the next generation.”

intro

T

here are many things which make me cringe. People using the word ‘classy.’ Back fat induced by an ill-fitting brassière. But nothing, NOTHING compares to that quintessence of cringe - the Happy Couple. Or even ... smug.

because quality matters

I’m not going to lie, my very nice chap and I often hold hands. But this is not because we like to have skin-on-skin contact at all times; nobody likes sweaty palms. It is because he lives in London and I am easily distracted by big buildings and shiny shops; the hand holding is essential otherwise I get lost. The image of a couple with their hands tucked into each other’s back pockets is a common cringe-inducer, perhaps with the occasional thumb slipped through a belt-hook. This makes no sense at all - it is highly unlikely that you have the same leg length and gait, so don’t pretend it’s comfortable. Are you practising for a three-legged race? No? Then Stop It.

The worst is when you find yourself uncomfortably close to a couple and they are indulging in a lengthy saliva-exchange.

We get it you’re having sex. No-one cares.

Going for a jolly public boob-squeeze? Refrain. Is your loved one’s tie slightly askew? Leave it. Want your partner to try some of your food? They can use their own cutlery.

So here is a plea to any of you who, having read this, suspect that you may be one of a Happy Couple – Beware The Cringe. As Bon Jovi says, you give love a bad name. Thank you, and Happy Valentine’s Day.

intro

20 / 20 vision I wonder how many men view Valentine’s Day as the Sword of Damocles that hangs above their heads. For many men in a relationship the hype and commercial aspects of the day exert a pressure where they feel they have to spend exorbitant amounts on flowers etc to ‘prove’ their love, irrespective of what they actually feel and think about their partner.

I wonder how many men view Valentine’s Day as the Sword of Damocles that hangs above their heads. For many men in a relationship the hype and commercial aspects of the day exert a pressure where they feel they have to spend exorbitant amounts on flowers etc to ‘prove’ their love, irrespective of what they actually feel and think about their partner. For many women in a relationship there is a large amount of emotional investment, it is the one day where their partner is obliged to make an open display of their affections. This is irrespective of their regular emotional predisposition and attitude for the remaining three hundred and sixty four days in the year. You will see women walking home after work on Valentine’s Day, clutching huge bouquets of overpriced flowers ceremoniously delivered to them at work. Many ‘glide’ upon an endorphin cushion of fluffy happiness, blissfully comparing the size of their bouquets to the others they pass in the street whose owners also have the ‘gift of gliding’. Is the size of the bouquet correlated with their partner’s love for them? Not necessarily the case as most men who are not in the initial stages of relationship seduction understand ‘flower power’. First, flowers act as a ‘Klingon cloaking device’ deflecting attention from little indiscretions. Second, the slate is wiped clean in readiness for another year of ‘being a bloke.’ Third, when any sort of favour or gift is given, a psychological transaction takes place, rather like a mental contract or ‘scorecard’ where the recipient feels obliged at some future point to reciprocate and the giver expects a return on their ‘investment’ - this known as the ‘norm of reciprocity’. When it comes to Valentine’s Day it’s a ‘love transaction’ as endorphins are also released - no imagination required when it comes to reciprocity!

because quality matters

Does Valentine’s Day serve any purpose apart from lining the retailer’s pockets? Is it an illustration of social hypocrisy that provides a temporary romantic reprieve from the harsh reality of how difficult intimate relationships can be? Forming a satisfying relationship has never been easy; we want to be one half of a couple whose personal characteristics are so closely meshed that we’ll remain oriented to one another in the hyper stimulating world of other options. In the back of our minds don’t we sometimes think there is someone out there who can deliver more than our current partner - emotionally, physically and intellectually? The assurance of a fully functioning and satisfying relationship resides in compatibility, a complex mix of character of traits that matter, if only we could figure out which traits they are! Compatibility does not hinge on some personal inventory of traits, it isn’t something you have, it’s something you make, it’s a process, one that you negotiate and renegotiate as you go along. It’s a disposition, an attitude, a willingness to make the relationship work.

You will see women walking home after work on Valentines Day, clutching huge bouquets of overpriced flowers ceremoniously delivered to them at work. Many ‘glide’ upon an endorphin cushion of fluffy happiness, blissfully comparing the size of their bouquets to the others they pass in the street whose owners also have the ‘gift of gliding’

In redefining compatibility, we need to examine that abstract concept called ‘chemistry’, a black box of a term too often invoked to denote the magic ingredient of a good relationship. Chemistry is an appealing concept, but used way too often by many people to absolve themselves of the need to consciously examine their approach to one another. As if the muse of love will alight on their shoulder and sprinkle fairy dust on them, and then they will suddenly open their eyes and behold ‘the perfect mate’, without prying open their own heart, embracing an unwavering willingness to see the other in a positive light or doing the hard work of exploring, knowing and respecting another human being. You must also connect emotionally. How much do you respond to each other’s need for attention? Does your partner turn toward you with equal enthusiasm? You need to ask questions and constantly update your knowledge of one another. And you need the ability to hear your partner’s pleasures and take them in. Realistically there is no such thing as a compatible couple. All couples disagree about the same things: money, sex, children, leaving the cap off the toothpaste or the lid up of the toilet. So, it’s really about how you manage your differences. If there is chemistry, then the whole courtship is about convincing yourself and others that you are compatible. But, really, you create compatibility. And then, eventually, maybe in 25 years, you will become soul mates.

Valentine’s Day - Love isn’t finding a perfect person. It’s seeing an imperfect person perfectly.

New Year so, why not a new you? So, February. You’ve lost that first half stone, kicked the

ciggies, not so much as glanced at a bar of chocolate in weeks and January’s been the driest month (in your life) since records began.

they’re stuck in, New Year resolutions a distant memory.

Well, chances are the answer’s actually very far from ‘right’.

“In 2012 I met a very shy, sad, nervous lady who’d split from her husband, and I helped her to lose weight,” said Jo. “Actually, it wasn’t her weight that was making her shy, sad and nervous. She identified various things in her life that were making her unhappy and set about changing them.

Let me guess, you’re suffering from one or more of the following: tiredness, boredom, emotional, hating your job, hating your life, not liking what you see in the mirror – I could go on.

“Now, she’s got a new job, bought the house of her dreams, sorted some health issues, grown in confidence and even bagged herself a lovely new man.”

If I’ve just described you there, why not do something for yourself and make 2013 the year you shake up your life for good?

Shelley agrees: “Making small, long-term changes really can transform your life. Achieving the right work-life balance is key, and within that fitting in some exercise, eating healthily and most importantly, making some ‘you’ time. Ring the changes and you really can achieve anything you set your mind to!”

Hallelujah, things are looking up! Right?

Meet Fitness and Lifestyle Gurus – Laxey based personal trainer, Shelley Simpson, and award-winning Peel-based Weight Watchers leader, Jo Pack. Both tell a common story: February’s when they meet loads of people desperate to get out of the lifestyle rut

The rules Jo

She ley

1.

Keep a diary – it’s amazing for tracking your emotions and

helping you identify when bad habits creep in and you feel at your lowest. Often they’re linked – you’ve had another tough day at work and finish late, go home and binge on sweets; the sugar crash later leaves you feeling even worse, and the vicious circle continues.

2.

Once you’ve identified bad habits, one-by-one change them to a good habit. Repeating a behaviour

21 times makes it a habit; do this slowly and build yourself a new, positive routine. For example, put your gym kit in the car the night before work; diarise three lunch-hour walks a week; change that chocolate bar for strawberries dipped in chocolate. Small, subtle changes will make a huge difference.

3. 4.

Spend 5 minutes each day putting together a plan to change something in your life; on Sunday, plan your

meals for the week and do your shopping list; on Monday, plan your exercise routine – a few quiet minutes thinking about practical ways to tackle a problem makes you focus on sorting it out. Get rid of the ‘saboteurs’ in your life. These are the

people who can’t do it themselves, and make you think you can’t either. Ever heard ‘Oh you’ll never get that job’ or ‘Go on, one more piece of cake won’t hurt’ before? You don’t need them.

18

1.

Spend time with the really amazing people in your life who want to help you. Tackling an obstacle together

– maybe it’s going through a break-up, becoming a parent, setting yourself an exercise goal, studying or even losing weight – means you’ll encourage each other and are more likely to succeed long-term.

2. 3.

you’re keen to achieve a positive life change.

4.

Beach walks and walking in general are brilliant to help

If you’re really sinking, don’t be afraid to seek professional help. It doesn’t mean you’re weak; it means

Build exercise into ‘wasted time’ – the endorphins (happy hormones) will improve your mood. Try sit-ups or 12-15 reps of tricep dips on the edge of the sofa during the ad break in Corrie, or 8-10 reps of squats, lunges and press-ups against the worktop whilst your food’s cooking. You’ll soon notice the difference!

clear your head. They’re also brilliant exercise for your legs and bum! If you haven’t got a dog, borrow one from a neighbour or friend – it’s a good excuse to get outdoors and active.

Q.

1.

As a small business owner, what does a drop in local inflation mean for me?

A.

For a business owner, in general lower inflation is better news than higher inflation. The key point, however, is not whether inflation is lower but rather what the actual rate is and the extent of the increase/ decrease. The current 2.5% rate is reasonable (although a bit high) and the fall from 2.9% is positive but not hugely significant. We have become used to a target rate of 2% (set by the Bank of England for the UK to which we are closely aligned) and so, ideally, the rate should not exceed this level as this is what most economic models are based on. There are two main ways the rate affects local business. • Firstly, the direct impact of lower inflation is the containment of running costs. Inevitably, if inflation increases then staff will expect higher wages to compensate for the higher cost of living, and this exacerbates the situation further. In order to maintain profits, which are already under pressure due to the global downturn, a business then needs either to improve efficiency or raise prices, or a combination of both. At Harding Lewis, we have tried in most (but not all) cases to keep our prices in line with inflation and combine this with improved services. • The second impact is on a macro level, in that low inflation generally leads to a healthier economy overall compared to the scenario with high inflation.

Q.

I want to start the New Year right financially. What is a financial health check and is this a good place to start?

Do you think we’ll see more or fewer mergers and buyouts like those of Manx2 and Sure in 2013 and why?

A.

A.

Many of us will be looking to make some positive resolutions for the New Year and gaining control of one’s financial situation is often the most popular place to start. Although these pledges can frequently be the most pressing, however, they can also be amongst the most difficult to implement and this is largely due to the fact that the first obstacle faced when it comes to financial planning is self-evaluation. A financial health check is designed specifically with this obstacle in mind by allowing a trained and approachable advisor to first assess your financial situation, in terms of incomings and outgoings, before then suggesting a series of manageable goals which are tailored to your financial profile. These concern areas such as good budgeting habits, managing day to day expenditure, managing long-term expenditure, tips on saving, advice for sensible borrowing and advice on how best to streamline loan repayments. What’s more, this professional can then point you in the right direction when it comes to the next stage – weighing up your options - which can also be a bewildering process to face on your own. At Lloyds TSB, our New Year financial health check service has been especially designed to help those looking to re-evaluate their finances. So if you feel that your finances are getting out of control or would simply like a second opinion, they are definitely the best place to start.

During 2012, market conditions continued to be uncertain. As a result there were continued low levels of M&A (mergers and acquisitions), particularly at the mid-market level experienced in the Islands. Despite this continued environment, however, we are certainly seeing increased levels of interest and activity in late 2012 and early 2013. This perhaps points to the market expecting resilience in business performance, if not high level growth. In the current environment, most have concluded that buying or merging with other businesses may be the only way to achieve this growth. By coming together, businesses can become more resilient through diversification and cost advantage. As businesses continue to look to the future and confidence builds, there may be more deals happening in order to take advantage of future growth and generate value. In the Isle of Man, a key area of interest and activity is the CSP/TSP (corporate services provider/ technical services provider) sector, with a number of businesses commenting to us that they are keen to look for M&A opportunities. This is consistent with colleagues’ experiences in the Channel Islands. To this end, we are actively assisting clients in identifying opportunities both locally and within our wider network. Sector consolidation could be good news for both buyers and sellers of CSP businesses, where a number of key players have built their businesses during the growth of the offshore business centres, and therefore may be considering exit routes - this is combined with buyers looking to take advantage of the next phase of growth for their businesses.

I’ve set myself a New Year’s resolution to get my finances in order and to make sure I’ve got a (long term) plan for retirement. I don’t currently have a pension but can you give me any advice on where’s best to start with my finances?

Q.

A.

To start with there are some steps that you can take yourself before embarking on seeking any specialist advice. Doing these will ultimately save you money in the long run. Firstly it’s vital to make sure you have a detailed budget plan that you stick to. Only then will you be able to get a real understanding of whether you are in a position to start. Month on month if you spend less than you earn, you will be in good shape. Go through any paperwork that you may have collected over the years, policy statements, share certificates, bonds etc and if possible make a list of everything you think you still hold. If you can, summarize it on a spreadsheet. You should also start by thinking about what is most important to you in life both now and in the future. Ask yourself questions such as ‘When am I hoping to stop working?’ or ‘how much am I going to need to replace my income when I do stop?’ or even ‘What ambitions do I still have?’ Setting some clear goals can help keep you on track to make sure you achieve your desired future. If you have worked out what it is you are hoping to achieve now, or need help to establish a plan, now would be the time to consult a specialist adviser who will be able to review all the details you have prepared above and look to build a financial plan to secure your future and give you peace of mind. It’s important to remember that any plan you make must be regularly reviewed to ensure that it stays in line with both your personal and your family’s ever changing circumstances and needs.

What are your economic predictions for 2013?

Will 2013 be the year in which the UK suffers the first ‘triple dip’ recession in modern history?

There are a number of commentators who predict this. I, however, am slightly more optimistic on the basis of surprisingly positive improvements in UK unemployment figures over recent months, improving corporate earnings and increased confidence demonstrated by the FTSE passing 6,000 points recently. Yet, here in the Isle of Man, we continue to face strong headwinds. Whilst the recent growth figures show the Island’s economy grew by 4% last year, economic challenges remain. There appears to be an increasingly concerted effort amongst major G20 economies to reduce tax leakage and continue to attack legitimate offshore centres. The Coalition Government, under attack from Labour for reducing the top rate of tax from 50% to 45%, may feel pressure to reduce VAT down from 20% to demonstrate that ‘we’re all in this together’. This could have a further dramatic effect on tax receipts in the Isle of Man. Finally, international legislation such as FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, which demands that companies report certain information concerning the accounts of their US customers on an annual basis) and the recently announced agreement with the UK, will continue to increase the costs of meeting these requirements, putting pressure on margins and new business flows. However, the Island can and, I believe, will meet these challenges head on. We must continue to reinvent ourselves and seek out new service led opportunities to complement our already diverse economy. 2013 will be another challenging year, but one in which we will prevail with hard work and strong leadership.

CHARITY CHALLENGE TO TAKE OVER SHOPS Crossroads Care has thrown down the gauntlet to local businesses to take part in the charity’s Charity Shop Challenge Day. From 14th February to 27th May local businesses will have the opportunity to take over one of the charity’s shops on Prospect Terrace or Victoria Street, Douglas. The aim is to maximise the day’s profits for the shop, competing against other local companies for the title of ‘Crossroads Care Charity Shop Champion’. Each team needs to be approximately 5 – 20 people. Different departments within one company can also enter. Last year’s winners Isle of Man Bank - ‘The Invincibles’ raised £4,321.88 with a celebrity breakfast, sponsored silence, cake sale in the office and bucket collection dressed as superheroes. Fundraising events and activities can be arranged ahead of the day and Crossroads shop manager will support teams on the day. HOSPICE CARE - CELEBRATING 30 YEARS ON THE ISLE OF MAN 1983 - 2013

PROCEEDS OF RL360°’S BUMPER CHRISTMAS RAFFLE GO TO AUTISM IN MANN Royal London 360° has presented a cheque for £1,643 to Autism in Mann. The Isle of Man registered charity was chosen as the beneficiary of RL360°’s 2012 Christmas raffle, which has gone down as the most successful in the company’s history. RL360°’s Steve Wright, pictured with colleague and fellow raffle organiser Natalie Challenor (right), said: ‘This is the most money we have ever raised at the Christmas raffle. ‘To raise more than £1,600 is a great achievement. We must also thank the local businesses who helped support the raffle by generously donating prizes. ‘We are thrilled to be able to hand the amount over to Autism in Mann, a worthy recipient.’ Autism in Mann Chairman Susan Corlett, also pictured, said the money would be used to fund ongoing projects. ‘We do swimming sessions and coffee mornings,’ she explained. ‘We have recently installed a ceiling hoist at Project 21 and a library and kitchen at the user-led café at Nunnery Howe. ‘The money will be well spent for the benefit of autistic people and their families in the Isle of Man.’

For the first time in its 30 year history Hospice has organised an off-island challenge. The once in a lifetime event is a bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, USA. The 528 miles of cycling over 8 days takes place from 1st to 12th October 2013. JOIN KILIMANJARO CHALLENGE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHILDREN’S CHARITY

YOUR CHANCE TO BE PART OF GLASGOW 2014 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

A trek to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in September this year is being organised to raise funds for The Children’s Centre. It follows a successful trip to Africa’s highest peak run by the charity in 2010, and those adventurers who missed out last time are being urged to sign up now to avoid disappointment. Mount Kilimanjaro stands 5,895metres above sea level in northern Tanzania near the border with Kenya and is the world’s highest free standing mountain. The route will follow the Lemosho Trail route which is one of lesser trodden paths to the summit, but one that was taken by celebrities who climbed the mountain in aid of Comic Relief in 2009. The 12 day trip starts on September 19 with a flight to Nairobi, Kenya, and a transfer to Arusha across the border into Tanzania the following day. The next day the walking begins with a trek through the rain forest from Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubw (Big Tree) Campsite at an altitude of 2,800metrs. There’s another 700metres of climbing the next day, and just 300metres the following day to allow the trekkers to acclimatise gradually to the thinner air. On day nine the trip culminates with The Children’s Centre adventurers making an early start for the final push to the summit from Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak - the highest point in Africa. After ascending just over 1,200metres in one day the reward for the effort will be worthwhile with the chance to watch a spectacular sunrise. The following day it’s time to say goodbye to the summit, but the group will take with them some fantastic memories as they descend the mountain and head back to Arusha and on to Nairobi for the flight home. Interested? Contact: Markeastham@thechildrenscentre.org.im Tel: 676076

Isle of Man residents are being urged to apply to become volunteers at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Several Manx sports fans took part in the London 2012 Olympics by volunteering to be ‘Games Makers’ - and the organisers of the Commonwealth Games are offering a similar invitation. To celebrate the launch of the Glasgow 2014 volunteer application programme the host city’s Central Station took on a sports carnival atmosphere with London 2012 Olympic boxing gold medallist Anthony Joshua, and Scotland’s Olympic and Commonwealth badminton star Susan Egelstaff joining members of the Games Maker Choir to lend their voices to the drive to recruit up to 15,000 of the friendliest people for the Games. Prospective volunteers have until February 28, 2013, to apply for a Games role. No previous Games experience is necessary - Glasgow 2014 is simply looking for helpful and friendly people who will be aged 16 by close of applications on February 28, 2013, who are eligible to work in the UK and available for at least eight days during the Games, which take place between July 23 and August 3, 2014. Volunteers will also have to be available for up to six days ahead of the Games for interviews in Glasgow, training and uniform collection. As well as general Games roles, Glasgow 2014 requires volunteers with a range of specialist skills including medical staff, drivers and people with specific sports expertise. Applications are being received online at: www.glasgow2014.com/volunteer

Eye Spy

Couples we love to hate

V

alentines is just around the corner and suddenly everyone’s coupled up. Whispering sweet nothings into their his n’ hers phones, slipping their hands into each other’s back pockets, gazing wistfully into the middle distance whenever they’re apart. It’s mating season all right. Time to get your own back. Here’s Eye Spy’s pocket guide to spotting the couples we all love to hate. See if you can collect the whole set.

The On-and-Off Couple

The Joined at the Hip Couple

The Fit Couple

Often spotted: in the middle of the dance floor on a Friday night, having a blazing row.

Often spotted: Sitting together in the back seat of the car when their friend gives them a lift, because they can’t bear to sit apart.

Often spotted: Running along the Railway Walk together in matching jogging gear.

Most likely to say: (far too full of $%£* to print….)

Most likely to say: ‘We’re each other’s best friend’

These two love to hate each other. They’ve broken up and got back together more times than Jude & Sienna. When they’re together, they’re constantly fighting and making each other’s lives miserable. Yet every time they break up, they end up getting back together again. Maybe the kissing and making up is worth it…

This couple does everything together. Wherever Tom goes, Amy goes too. They automatically assume their other halves are invited out with them, even if it’s a girls night out, and sulk if they have to sit separately at dinner parties. There’s no ‘I’ in this relationship, everything’s prefixed with ‘We’. How they ever managed to function before they found each is one of life’s great mysteries.

The All Loved Up Couple Often spotted: Stroking each other’s hair. Most likely to say: ‘I lubb you too, Snuggles’ You can’t miss this couple. Kissing in the middle of Strand Street, slipping their hands into each other’s back pockets, updating Facebook with ‘I have the most amazing boyfriend in the whole world!!!!!’ It might have been ok when you’re 15, but not when you’re a recently divorced fortysomething. Get a room… The Matching Couple Often spotted: At the airport, with matching wheely cases, and identical puffa jackets. Most likely to say: ‘Like two peas in a pod, us!’ What were you thinking? Was there an unmissable BOGOF on his n’ hers stripy jumpers or something? Just because you’re in a couple, doesn’t mean you can’t be individuals. It’s sort of sweet you want to look like each other, but getting matching haircuts is not the way forward.

because quality matters

The ‘I can’t remember why we’re together’ Couple Often spotted: On separate nights out, flirting with other people. Most likely to say: ‘It’s complicated…’ They’ve been together forever, so you’d think they’d be in love, right? Wrong. This couple plan on getting married eventually… but to other people. They’ve been an item so long, it’s easier to stay together than to break up. Wake up! A bit of hassle now saves a big headache later on when she finds out she’s pregnant…

Most likely to say: ‘Another circuit, babe?’ While the rest of us try and keep our gym flushes away from public view, this couple are more than happy to share their sweat. Running along the front beside each other, working out side by side, it’s almost like they’re competing. Or perhaps it’s just something about getting hot and sweaty together. The ‘what’s yours is mine’ couple Often spotted: in Jabberwocky, swapping plates. Most likely to say: ‘Oh no, I’m too full for dessert, I’ll just have a taste of yours’ This is the girlfriend who’s on a diet, but always wants to ‘try’ her boyfriend’s meal, and then ends up polishing half of it off. That way she can say she only had a salad, even though she ended up eating two pieces of garlic bread, a couple of dough balls, a slice and a half of pizza and most of her boyfriend’s ice cream sundae. The Perfect Couple Often spotted: Looking picture-perfect, walking along the beach together. Most likely to say: ‘It was love at first sight’ Everyone knows one of these couples. They never argue, they get along really well, and they even manage to have a social life of their own. They’re the perfect couple. Jealous? Of course we are. But remember, nothing perfect lasts forever…

Valentines Horoscopes Pisces (February 20 - March 20)

Cancer (June 22 - July 23)

One way or another, you are facing a month of high emotions. Enjoy what can be like a roller coaster ride of contacts. It may be that your love is driven in two different directions. This causes confusion but it is also bittersweet. Be aware, though, that what you see as a romantic interlude could mean much more to someone else! Go for gentle, kind types rather than potential bunny boilers.

In your dreams anything is possible. In the real world it can sometimes seem that nothing is possible. Somewhere in the middle is the truth. When you find it this month, put some extra effort into talking. Let someone know how you feel clearly and with humour. An atmosphere of warmth and openness gives you the best chance of success. Be generous.

Aries (March 21 - April 20)

Aquarius (January 21 - February 19) Progress in matters of the heart can be breathtaking. Be sure to look your best right from the outset. If you are getting a cool reaction it could be because someone is busy and distracted. Try making the weekend a special time. If there is competition in either your personal or business life, then be sure to get moving and make your ‘pitch’ first. Confidence comes with success.

Having a way with words sees you getting pretty much your own way this month. There are those who you would rather not speak to at all, but make the effort. A recent dispute can be resolved with a bit of give and take. Showing your intentions before you let your feelings be known gives a strong and clear message. Being snappy at the opposition will not help as, again, you must use your charm. Taurus (April 21 - May 21) Friendships are stronger than ever and, in this romantic time, you can build on them. Although cash may not be plentiful, a thoughtful gesture on Valentines Day goes down well. Charm and thoughtfulness will bring rewards both emotionally and at home. A bit of compromise is necessary at work, where someone may be feeling less than happy about a recent decision. Gemini (May 22 - June 21) One has to admire your enthusiasm for a certain plan. Going about it in the best way, however, is another matter. Please give some thought to who you involve and how. On the romantic side, this month gives you an excuse (if you need one) to let your feelings be known. Be prepared to charm rather than argue if there is a cool response. Patience pays dividends in the long run.

28

Leo (July 24 - August 23) You should be feeling well within your comfort zone this month. That breeds the confidence that you need to make a move. Words can be both your friend and your enemy. Choose them well when approaching a loved one and even more so on a business matter. A thoughtful gift goes down better on Valentines Day than an expensive one. What matters now is to give generously of your time. Virgo (August 24 - September 23) There is a strong desire to change your love life this Month. Think this through in a practical manner first before acting. A new start in any direction will affect how you work. It may be necessary to take a break to get things moving properly. A romantic gesture is best reserved for the weekend as pressure is on to get things done on the business front. Libra (September 24 - October 23) Creativity and enthusiasm combine to tackle something new this month. Communicate openly with a partner and be prepared to show your softer side. A response that you get on Valentines Day means more than you first realise. Be prepared to take advantage of an offer that may not come again. If your heart is on your sleeve, make sure that it is seen!

Scorpio (October 24 - November 22)

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 21)

Capricorn (December 22 - January 20)

A high level of excitement comes from a chance remark this week. Is it possible that someone who inspires you wants to get closer? Be it a personal or business relationship, make the most of this fruitful month. Keep communications honest and open and you bring out the more supportive traits of others. Want to be perfect? It isn’t always the thing that makes you loveable!

If you want to inspire yourself to find solutions, speak to friends and colleagues. Talk is cheap and effective! A romantic interlude on Valentines Day brings it home to you that you should do it more often. Sometimes we forget the benefits of kindness. A busy world is not always a happier world. Keep yours on an even keel by spending more time with loved ones.

A passionate day takes you by surprise, perhaps because you had forgotten the time of year. Still, there’s no excuse not to make a special effort at the weekend. Give a loved one a surprise. You don’t have to break the bank when it is your time and attention that are craved. February may see you making a proposition. Have you thought about what comes next?

Words | Advocate X

Take another little piece of my heart now, baby It seems like only yesterday that I was writing a column on the thorny subject of divorce, but much like a particularly contagious strain of leprosy, the subject is a gift that just keeps on giving. After all, most of us will (at one time or another) go through the unpleasant process of splitting up with someone before slowly realizing that a substantial amount of your stuff has, through some mystical process, now become their stuff. Whether it’s a really good CD or a T-shirt from that concert you loved, what was previously your property is now in the hands of your bitter and twisted ex and it ain’t ever coming back. In fact, it might already be enjoying its new life as a drink coaster or dishcloth. You may think that lawyers are clever enough to get around situations like this but in fact they tend to come off worse than anyone as if you are a partner in a law firm, you have unlimited liability for the debts of the whole firm. This means that most lawyers put all of their significant assets into the names of their other halves (or even children) so that when the bailiff (but hopefully not THE Bailiff) comes a-knocking, you can say with a straight face that the farmhouse, car collection and yacht don’t actually belong to you. This arrangement then has predictably dire consequences in a divorce situation as the lawyer has to convince the court that the assets were of course his/hers after all.

However unedifying the proceedings may be, I worry that we may be about to witness the birth of a new breed of golddigger – one that, after checking the health of your wallet, gives you a less metaphorical check-up. “Oh, what blue eyes you have. And what sturdy looking corneas. Tell me, does heart disease run in your family?

30

Anyway, if you were pained at the thought of losing your material possessions in a break-up, think how much worse it must be for Dr Richard Batista, a surgeon from the USA. Dr Batista was so devastated after his wife had undergone two failed kidney transplant operations that he offered her one of his own kidneys - only to then see her start an alleged affair with her physiotherapist after a tragic post operation karate accident (no, really). Unfortunately, he didn’t describe it as a “body blow” but I’m going to pretend that he did for the purposes of this paragraph. What he actually said was, “I saved her life. But the pain is unbearable. It put a hole in my heart that still exists”- thus demonstrating a worrying lack of anatomical knowledge for a surgeon. Divorce proceedings ensued, and everything was looking disturbingly normal (for America) until his soon-to be ex-wife stopped him seeing their children, at which point he decided that enough was enough and demanded his kidney back. Or $1,500,000, if the kidney wasn’t available (this in marked contrast to many divorced men who would happily sacrifice both a kidney and the money, if only they could have their b*lls back). The wife responded by launching a PR campaign of her own, trying to taint his reputation and make her seem like less of an awful person. - “[He] was rummaging though her underwear drawer and sniffing her underwear, trying to catch the telltale stench of infidelity”, Dawnell Batista’s lawyer Douglas Rothkopf told the court. Mmm. “The telltale stench of infidelity” - I’m sure Lynx are trying to copyright that phrase right now for their new fragrance - a heady combination of vodka, sweat and soul-calcifying guilt. However unedifying the proceedings may be, I worry that we may be about to witness the birth of a new breed of gold-digger - one that, after checking the health of your wallet, gives you a less metaphorical check-up. “Oh, what blue eyes you have. And what sturdy-looking corneas. Tell me, does heart disease run in your family?” More seriously, genuine legal questions are raised over what rights you have over your body and its assorted goopy bits and by-products. Michael Crichton painted a startling picture in his book Next of a situation where a laboratory gained ownership of a person’s genes and hunted him down so that they could be harvested for profit, but that situation is a bit farfetched - far more likely is the prospect of unemployed and destitute people being used as organ farms for the wealthy (although you may want to be a bit careful with the lungs, liver and genitals of your average chav as it’s all too easy to imagine where they’ve been). I suppose the moral of the story is ‘don’t give one of your precious organs to someone who may later have an affair with their physiotherapist following a tragic postoperation karate accident’, but surely everyone already knows that? How about ‘be careful where you put your bits as you might not get them back even if you really want them’? That works for everyone. Especially lepers.

book review

Book Review BY | Sharon Sutton

The Number: or What Do You Need for the Rest of Your Life, and What Will It Cost? by Lee eisenburg THE NUMBER, by Lee Eisenberg, is one of the best ‘call to arms’ books I have read on planning for retirement and should be essential reading for anyone over the age of 30 without a pension, especially baby boomers who are hurtling towards and through retirement. It digs far deeper than simple maths and demographic probabilities and shatters many of the myths surrounding how we think we will live the last third (hopefully) of our lives and pay for that retirement experience. Most importantly, it demands that we answer some questions that help us shape our quality of life in retirement. Beyond its information and advice, the book is humorous, with a narrative style that makes it an amusing read which, considering the subject matter, is a pleasant surprise.

The rules

Eisenberg takes readers on a tour of how the American system of salary based pensions gave way to the shakier future of “salary-reduction programs”- early lingo for the 401(k) and IRA (individual retirement account). Sound familiar? It’s exactly what is happening in Britain now with the demise of the Defined Benefit (Final Salary Pension) Scheme and shift to Money Purchase and Auto Enrolment; or if you prefer; ‘Old Rest of Your Life versus the New Rest of Your Life’.

points to ponder for all those procrastinators who have been entrusting their long-term future to the Retirement Fairy.

He looks at how, despite all those websites telling us how much to save to retire comfortably, most people remain in denial or uncertain about what their number really is. He cites one financial planner who asks clients if they floss their teeth daily: regular flossing may increase life expectancy, increasing their need for their retirement savings to last longer [there’s a flimsy excuse to give up flossing right there!] Most books on retirement do little more than illustrate the usual financial planning exercises. However, as Eisenberg explains, “retirement planning is worth little unless we begin by thinking deeply about the kinds of lives we aspire to live. There are many paths to satisfaction in retirement, and some of them are a lot more affordable than others.” And we’re going to live a lot longer than we think. “The first person who will live to 150 is closer than we think” is one of the facts provided from the World Future Society and anyone in their 40’s should plan to last until beyond 100. I have found there are precious few works that deal with the central issues of existence - life, death, and money – and with this much elegance and wit, Eisenberg’s text is a bonus.

36

Eisenberg tears the concept of retirement financing apart, confronting both inner demons and life dreams to come up with the answer. Plenty of research has turned into a field guide on how to successfully downshift into retirement and on reinventing the latter or ‘asset decumulation’ part of life. The book takes you on a journey through cocktail parties, hotel meeting rooms, financial-planning seminars and using ‘crash dummies’... Eisenberg writes about stuff that bores most people but it ends up being a useful and entertaining general tour of the subject, full of “points to ponder for all those procrastinators who have been entrusting their long-term future to the Retirement Fairy.” The point is to show how each of us has a better shot at a financially secure and emotionally fulfilling future if we can better understand what’s involved in calculating the Number expenses in later life, inflation and long life spans, among much else - and the aforementioned ‘crash dummies’ are a way to run these estimates. But we also need to realise, Eisenberg notes, what pure calculation may leave out -- intangibles such as a sense of “what it takes to lift your spirits and make your heart sing through old age,” believing such a goal is possible. He tells how even late starters can plan and live a creative life that “doesn’t resemble a treadmill - or break the bank, either.” Anyone contemplating retirement, especially early retirement, would do well to read it before they go down the path of no return. It also prods readers into thinking beyond money and instead about what they’ll do with their time and energy in retirement. The value of this book lies in its conversation about getting older, insights about key questions for any financial blueprint and deliberations on what makes for a satisfying life. A search of the term “retirement planning” on Amazon spits out more than 1000 titles, so why then buy this one, especially when it is so ‘US’ in style? For starters, it’s a smooth and engaging read, which is rare for a personal financial book. Our mindsets and financial services already follow the US in many ways, but mostly because Eisenberg is erudite, relevant and motivating. It is rare to come across a storyteller with such a sense of humour coupled with a real ability to distill complex information. ISLE OF MAN FILM

AN EXHIBITION BY SIMON BUTTIMORE

W

ELL-KNOWN LOCAL FILM AND VIDEO ARTIST SIMON BUTTIMORE HAS PRODUCED AN EXCITING NEW EXHIBITION AT THE SAYLE GALLERY FROM 1 FEBRUARY TO 24 FEBRUARY. The exhibition, which will include interactive, immersive film installations, animations and live streaming from locations across the Island and the UK, will intrigue and delight anyone who is interested in how film and similar genres can be perhaps the most immediate and confrontational of art forms. Simon, a Sayle Galley Artist and a member of ‘Retina’, has co-opted many of his friends and collaborators to contribute to ‘This is Art’. Simon is fascinated with the way film and video can be influenced by earlier art movements whilst subverting them into a very 21st century movement of its own and ‘Retina’, which is a group of VJ Artists interested in sound and vision, special effects processing and video art installation is a part of this. “There is more to ‘Art’ than paintings on walls,” says Simon. “You won’t see my films, my installations, in someone’s living room, but my work is a valid art form which I believe can excite imaginations, encourage others to experiment with their own art, and show that there is a thriving contemporary art scene here in the Isle of Man, but perhaps not where you expect to see it. I hope that art lovers, and those who are intrigued by what they might see, will come along to the exhibition and enjoy it.” Location: The Sayle Gallery, Villa Marina Arcade, 1-3 Harris Promenade, Douglas, IM1 2HN Admission: FREE | Telephone: 674557 Opening times: 10am – 5pm Tue – Sat, 1.30 – 4.30pm Sundays, 1pm – 5pm Mondays.

CAMERA TRAP HEADS INTO PRODUCTION FOLLOWING A BRITISH WILDLIFE FILM CREW ARMED WITH THE LATEST CAMERA TECHNOLOGY AS THEY PURSUE LOCAL SIGHTINGS OF A RARE WILDCAT IN CENTRAL ASIA, CAMERA TRAP IS DESCRIBED BY ITS PRODUCERS AS “ATMOSPHERIC, VISUALLY STUNNING AND TERRIFYINGLY REAL”. FILMED AS DOCUMENTARY WITH AN UNPRECEDENTED LEVEL OF AUTHENTICITY, CAMERA TRAP CATCHES THE CREW BOTH ‘ON’ AND ‘OFF’ CAMERA AS THEY TRACK DOWN THEIR PREY. The film is the directorial debut of experienced wildlife documentarian Alex Verner who also wrote the script. Camera Trap is being produced by Jason Newmark (Triangle, Severance, Creep) and Steve Christian (Disappearance of Alice Creed, Chico and Rita, TT3D). Camera Trap marks the 101st production to reach the Island’s shores since the film industry’s inception in 1995. Laurence Skelly MHK, Member for Department of Economic Development with responsibility for Film and Media said: “We are thrilled to announce another film production on the Island following our new partnership with the Pinewood group announced last year. 2013 is already shaping up to be a busy year for the Manx film industry and our local film professionals, many of whom are busily working on Camera Trap at the moment.” Isle of Man Film’s Hilary Dugdale added: “Yet again the Island has provided us stunning film exteriors for this project and there’s no doubt audiences are going to be hooked by Camera Trap. We’ve spent a lot of time planning the visuals of the film; it’s going to look incredible. It’s a really strong crew, featuring lots of home-grown talent so there really couldn’t be a better start to 2013 for the Manx film industry.” Director: Alex Verner | Producers: Steve Christian, Jason Newmark Line Producer: Vanessa Tovell Isle of Man Film Hilary Dugdale, Manager, E-mail: Hilary.dugdale@gov.im | Tel: 01624 687173

Put a stamp on your style Personalise your fashion with some branding. Lisa Haynes reveals the best in bespoke style.

Alexa Chung’s got one, so has singer Lana Del Ray, but it was Grace Kelly who sparked the trend. They’re all famous faces bestowed with the honour of having a bag named after them.

Hermes Kelly was renamed when the Princess of Monaco, nee Grace Kelly, was photographed obscuring her baby bump with the bag in 1956 and the brand’s iconic Birkin followed in the Eighties, named after singer Jane Birkin. More recently Mulberry has jumped on the star muse style bandwagon, christening bags ‘Alexa’ and ‘Del Ray’ after their celebrity ambassadors. If a fashion brand isn’t begging you for your surname to brandish on its accessories, there are other ways to bespoke your style. Think embossed lettering, initials or even your name splashed over your soles. A personalised piece is a surefire way to stand out from the fashion pack. But the real bonus? The more individual your accessory, the less likely your sister/friend/daughter will want to borrow it.

Forget the traditional new year blues, the colour of the month and indeed 2013 - is green. The powers that be at Pantone Colour Institute HQ have spoken and declared Emerald (shade 17-5641 to be exact) this year’s jewel in the colour crown. Described as a “lively, radiant, lush green”, the ‘It’ hue has stormed both the red carpets and international catwalks, making it an accessible colour trend to replicate on both the clothing rails and beauty counters. Time for a New Year colour update? Diamonds may be forever, but emerald is the gem to covet for 2013. Green goddess

A shiny silk, brocade, or velvet - in fact all fabrics which reflect light and sparkle - will show emerald at its most brilliant. Those with clear colourings (a high contrast between hair, eye and skin tone) will especially dazzle in bright shiny emerald that is made for evening glamour. Daytime gems Emerald may be associated with precious stones but that doesn’t mean the colour has to be reserved for afterdark. Jewel greens on linen, cotton or wool will appear softer and matte and therefore pared down for office attire or weekend casualwear.

If you’re in any doubt about finding just the right emerald tone, cast your eyes over Gucci’s green. Models sashayed down the autumn/winter 12 catwalk in a hypnotic opulent jewel shade, while Burberry Prorsum sweetened up their spring/summer 13 show with a metallic Quality Streetinspired green.

While the catwalks created a dramatic impact by flaunting head-to-toe emerald, practicality suggests the Green Giant look won’t work for most of us day-to-day.

Make emerald your new black, If it’s eveningwear you’re after, be aware that emerald tones differ radically depending on the fabric.

An emerald handbag, heels, or even a scarf tied to the handle of a neutral shade handbag will bring you bang up-to-date.

because quality matters

Whether for work or leisure, mixing emerald with other shades from your palette will allow you to achieve a look that is both personal and current. For the truly colour-shy, a subtle flash of emerald is all you need to give the colour of 2013 the green light.

Bonprix shirt dress

Emerald beauty On the colour cosmetics wheel, emerald is a winner for eyes. It effortlessly enhances green eyes, draws out blues, emphasises green undertones in hazel peepers and intensifies brown eyes to make them appear deeper. It’s also the perfect complementary colour to peaches, pinks, roses, ruby reds and aubergines, offering a variety of lipstick and blush combinations to experiment with. “Emerald is easy to wear once you think minimal, sleek and graphic,” suggests Lesley Keane, MAC senior artist. “Look backstage at spring/summer 13 catwalks such as Kenzo or Stella McCartney. Models for both shows wore a modernised liner shape against a neutral face.” For a more natural take on the emerald eye, simply outline the inner eye liner with green kohl. “My best advice for pulling off this look is to focus on the eyes, leaving a neutral pallet elsewhere,” says Keane. “Don’t use too much bronzer; stick to a natural sun-kissed look by using a honey-toned bronzer and finish with a lip conditioner or neutral lip colour.”

Winning beauty The votes are in for 2013’s Product of the Year survey revealing consumer demand for convenience. Kleenex scooped two beauty awards, one for its Facial Cleansing Wipes in the Facial Skincare and Beauty category, and another for the Eye Makeup Removal Wipes in Eye Skincare and Beauty. In the Moisturiser category, Nivea Q10 Firming Body Oil was most popular for pampering and firming skin at the same time. More than 10,000 consumers voted to determine the winners of the annual awards, advising fellow shoppers on the most innovative products on the shelves.

Body idol If you need any more inspiration to hit the gym in the New Year, Jessica Ennis has scooped another gong for Britain’s ‘perfect body idol’. The Olympic athlete, who was second in the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year contest, topped a national poll by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, beating other stars such as Beyonce and Kelly Brook with 65% of the votes. The study polled 2,103 British women to discover more about their body preferences and which celebrity they feel has the ‘perfect’ body.

Alert guyliner Guard your make-up bag and put a lock on your lip gloss collection - one in 10 British men admit to being secret make-up wearers. Guys from Newcastle are the most likely to wear make-up, closely followed by men from Essex, according to a recent survey by designer secret sales website, www.HushHush.com. Concealer was top of the beauty list for those that admitted to using war paint with 71%; lip gloss followed with 64% and almost half (49%) were partial to eyeliner, or ‘guyliner’. More than a third of the men taking part (37%) also regularly used fake tanning products.

THE Food of Love Bored with munching shop-bought chocs on Valentine’s Day? Here are five super-special chocolate recipes by Paul Young that will have your loved one licking their lips for more! When it comes to Paul Young, the description ‘chocoholic’ is putting it mildly. But the obsessive, sweet-toothed Yorkshire man has had the last laugh, by putting his money where his mouth has always been. Having opened his fourth chocolate shop in 2012 (www.paulayoung.co.uk), the experimental chocolatier who trained in Marco Pierre White’s kitchen, can’t get enough of roasted cocoa beans, after they’ve been ground into a liquid and cooled: “It’s amazing how a humble bean can become such an intoxicating and complex experience,” he says.

eating something sweet and indulgent at teatime is compulsory. But he’s hoping chocolate lovers will also begin to be more experimental, which is why he’s included savoury recipes in his book Adventures With Chocolate published in paperback by Kyle Books, priced £14.99. Here are five recipes to whet your partner’s appetite this February 14...

Born in Yorkshire and raised in the small mining town of Trimdon Station, County Durham, Hayes points out that

Honey-cured bacon, stilton and chocolate sandwich (Serves 2) 4 thick slices of hand-cut, crusty white bread Soft salted butter, for spreading 50g Venezuelan 72% dark chocolate 6 rashers honey-cured bacon 75g very ripe Stilton

Preheat the grill until very hot. Lightly toast the bread on both sides, then spread with butter. Grate the chocolate on top and return to the grill briefly to melt. Remove and immediately put the bacon under the grill until the edges are crisp and caramelised. Place on top of the chocolate

and finish with a generous crumbling of Stilton.

Sweet chocolate pesto (Makes 1 large jar - 250ml) 25g basil 150ml light extra virgin olive oil Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon 1/2tsp sea salt 60g pine nuts 100g pecorino cheese, grated 25g Venezuelan 100% dark chocolate, grated

50

Place all the ingredients into a small blender - or use a pestle and mortar - and blend until you reach your preferred texture - chunky or smooth, or somewhere in between. Spoon the pesto into a sterilised jar, seal and keep airtight. Stored like this, the pesto will keep in the fridge for a month. Once open, use within one to two weeks.

Chocolate water biscuits for cheese (Makes about 16 biscuits, 30 if canape-size) 250g plain flour 1tsp sea salt 20g cocoa powder 1/2tsp English mustard powder (optional) Your choice of spice or herb (optional) 85g butter

Put a jug of water to chill in the fridge for half an hour. Place all the dry ingredients (including any flavourings) in a large bowl and mix well, before rubbing in the butter until evenly combined. Gradually add enough refrigerated water to form a pliable dough; this must not be too sticky, so be careful when adding it. Knead the dough

gently until smooth. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for 30 minutes to rest and relax. Alternatively, use a sharp knife to cut into squares or rectangles. Prick each biscuit with a fork and bake until golden and crisp (about 10 to 12 minutes). Place on a wire rack to cool. The biscuits can be stored in an airtight container for two to three months.

Dark chocolate and chilli gnocchi, with mascarpone and pecorino (Makes 2 main course portions) For the Gnocchi: 65g plain flour 20g cocoa powder 1/2tsp chilli powder (choose your preferred heat level) Pinch of sea salt 325g cooked mashed potato (floury-textured potatoes work best) 1 egg yolk 1tbsp extra virgin olive oil To serve: 200g mascarpone Freshly ground black pepper 10g fresh oregano leaves 25g pecorino cheese, grated

To shape your gnocchi, cut the dough into two and begin to roll a long

sausage shape, sprinkling flour on your surface if the dough gets sticky. Cut the dough into even-sized pieces, roughly 2.5cm long. You can leave your gnocchi this shape or, to give an attractive finish, roll the back of a fork over each little dumpling to give a lined pattern and rounded shape. Place the gnocchi on a plate covered with cling film until you’re ready to cook them. Bring a large pan of salted water to a simmer. Plunge in the gnocchi and wait until they float to the surface. Once they’re floating, remove from the water and place on kitchen paper to drain.

Paul’s aztec-style hot chocolate (Makes 2 very large mugfuls) 25g light muscovado sugar (more if you like it sweet) 20g dark cocoa powder 100g Caribbean 66% dark chocolate Spice of your choice, e.g. chilli, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom or ginger

because quality matters

Heat 500ml water, the sugar and cocoa powder in a pan and simmer for three minutes. Break the chocolate into pieces and add to the pan. Using an electric hand mixer, blend for one minute, adding any spices that you are using at this point. Bring the hot chocolate back to simmer for two minutes and serve.

Gourmet Tea&Coffee CuppaCo are an online retail business with an ever growing office in the heart of Douglas. Since they launched, they’ve been seeking out the best gourmet coffee and micro roasters across the world, even choosing to work alongside local tea blenders here in the Isle of Man. Keen champions of Manx talent, it’s the companies aim to provide customers with everything they need to make a perfect brew.

Die-hard caffeine fans, we just love a great cuppa and a good old tea vs. coffee debate. Meet Tasha and Laura, two product experts from CuppaCo. Read on and find out why they’re so passionate about their beloved beverages. Here they talk us through their favourite products and explain why they harbour such strong feelings towards caffeine.

Tea with Tasha Like most Brits there’s nothing I enjoy more than a good cuppa; they don’t call me Tasha the Tea Lover for nothing you know. From a traditional brew, to the exotic and unique tastes of fruit and gourmet infusions, there’s not much my taste buds haven’t tried. After water, tea is the most consumed beverage in the world and with approximately 3,000 varieties you can be sure there’ll be a blend to please your palate. I’m not afraid to admit that before I started at CuppaCo I wasn’t the biggest fan of hot drinks, but I took my new position as an opportunity to expand my horizons and embrace the tea and coffee world with open arms. Consequently this is when I discovered that I am a (not so) secret fiend for all things tea. If you aren’t much of a tea or coffee drinker yourself, my tip is to try a few in order to find the perfect blend for you. What’s the harm in that, right? Now, let me tell you about a few of my favourite brews that help me glide through each day. Without a cup of Bloom’s Reawakening Breakfast tea I can honestly say my mornings would be a nightmare. It’s filled with

54

energising properties that really help me to prepare for the day ahead, while it also helps to kick-start my metabolism; so it’s a bit of a sneaky way to burn more calories throughout the day. Then after lunch a cup of Storm’s Organic Red Berry and Rose tea is a must. Both of these drinks not only taste fantastic, but they’re so handy because despite being gourmet loose leaf blends, they come in silk teabags which make preparation so much faster, plus the advanced silk bags actually maximise the taste of the leaves giving you a cuppa to remember. Once I’ve wound down for the night, after dinner there is nothing better than a cup of green tea because it is a fantastic aid for digestion. Now there aren’t many who like the taste of green tea so this is exactly why I love Bluebird’s Hot Mama Jama Loose Green Tea, nothing to do with me being a hot mama myself, but because it’s packed full of other tasty ingredients like passion fruit, mango and delicious tropical fruits. It truly is a guilt free indulgence. And when I like to treat myself? Well I turn to Chocolateas of course, because who could really say no to a mouth-watering cup of two of life’s great pleasures, chocolate and tea? I rest my case! isle of man premier magazine

Coffee with Laura Ah, yes, the wonderful world of coffee. What a great place to be. Is there honestly anything better than taking that first, gentle sip of your chosen blend on a Monday morning? OK, maybe it’s not a gentle sip, probably more like a desperate slurp, but still, it really is the only way to kick-start your week. From milky, gourmet brews to easy capsule coffee, every day I thank the caffeine gods that my favourite beverage offers so much variety. So why am I such an avid coffee lover? Well, after years of experience, I have a carefully tried and tested routine that sees me from the moment I sleepily stumble into the kitchen, to the minute I switch off my computer after a long, hard day. Let’s begin. Anyone who knows me will agree with the following statement: I am not a morning person. The truth is I heavily rely on some seriously strong little Forza Roma Italian capsules bursting with the required level of caffeine just to coax my eyes open. One (or five) of these tend to see me through the morning until I start to flag, usually an hour or so after lunch. Since my taste buds will have woken up by this time, I like to try something a bit special in the afternoon. Here in the office we’re lucky enough to have a few of our coffee machines ready to use, so I’m always making the most of the DeLonghi Magnifica bean to cup coffee maker, brewing everyone fresh whole bean coffee when we all need a boost. I’m pretty particular about my beans and I’ve recently started getting into gourmet coffee, current obsession being Marley Coffee, a brand that grow and produce their blends from the steep slopes of Jamaica. What sets gourmet coffee beans apart is the fact that they come from the top tier of the Arabica coffee plant meaning they’re superior in taste, not to mention deliver amazing cup quality. Now I know what you’re thinking, surely you can’t manage another ounce of coffee after such a caffeine happy day, but early evening is actually when I enjoy a brew the most. The perfect option for an after dinner beverage and the coffee I wind down with is the rather unique offering of Kopi Luwak. Made affordable by the wonderful Sea Island Coffee, my favourite product from their exclusive yet budget friendly range has to be the Sumatra Kopi Luwak Musang Filter Coffee. Stunning coffee that you can just heap into your cafetiere? Yes please. I’m endlessly grateful that this luxurious, velvety blend has a lower caffeine content, still allowing me fall into a deep slumber, all so I can start my much loved routine over again the next day.

the

real value of wine

A

t this time of year, the wine trade always starts to speculate on the duty increase that is due in the Budget. This year the UK budget will be announced on March 20th. The Chancellor may well say that there will be no further increases in duty on wines, beers and spirits. What he actually means is that he is only raising it by the duty escalator of 2% above inflation, or about 15p a bottle, which is now going to take the excise duty and VAT element of a bottle of wine to almost £2.50.

It doesn’t take a mathematician to work out that if you buy a bottle of wine for £4.00, there is not a lot of money left for the actual wine, as at least £2.50 of that will be going straight to the Chancellor of the Exchequer! Fixed costs including the glass, label, cork and capsule are more or less the same for every bottle and work out at around 80 – 90p per bottle. Don’t forget the 20% VAT on the rest of the price of the wine too! You are lucky if there is 40p left for the wine, just 10% of the cost of your bottle. Somewhere along the line the man (or lady) who grew the grapes would also like a small payment for their efforts. Nobody makes money from that £4 bottle other than the Treasury.

However, for every pound more that you spend on a bottle, proportionally you will be handing over less to the Chancellor and will have much more wine for your money. By the time you reach £8 a bottle, the wine is about 40% of the cost and at £15 a bottle, around 50% of the cost will be wine. There are lots of wines available in the £7 - £10 price range, which demonstrate this. Exchange rate plays its own part in the pricing of wines in Britain. At the moment, some of the best value comes from South Africa, South America and Europe. At £7.15 the Percheron Chenin Viognier blend from South Africa offers fruit salad in a glass and is refreshing and lively with peach, apricot, pineapple and mango flavours. It’s a great wine to drink by itself, but its fruity character also means that it works well with slightly spicy foods. Also from South Africa, the Wolftrap Red is a mellow, spicy blend of Syrah and Mourvedre with rich ripe black fruit flavours. At £7.95, this is exceptionally good value for money. It comes from top estate, Boekenhoutskloof, one of the Cape’s most innovative producers. Rioja is a favourite tipple on the Island, and the Rioja Navajas Tinto at £7.75 is incredibly easy to drink. It is medium

bodied and silky smooth with just a touch of vanilla oak following a few months in oak. This comes from the Navajas family estate in Navarette, just outside Logrono, where Antonio Navajas and his son, also named Antonio, have had long term contracts with growers to ensure the best quality in their range of wines. For an extra £2.20, try the Crianza, which is produced from fruit grown in some of the best sites in the village of Navarette, and is aged for 14 months in new oak, giving it a deliciously creamy vanilla finish. The literal translation of Crianza is ‘nursed’ and in wine terms it means that wine rests in oak barrels to add an extra layer of flavour and character. In Rioja a wine can only be labelled as Crianza if it has spent at least 12 months in oak and 12 months in bottle before being released for sale. For Sauvignon Blanc lovers, the Casas del Bosque from Chile’s cool Casablanca Valley (£8.95) is a deliciously fresh and fruity wine, ideal for drinking on its own but equally good paired with salad, fish and chicken dishes. It has a wonderfully intense aroma of blackcurrant leaf and citrus fruits, which follows on to the palate and is beautifully balanced.

New You Getaways Get into shape for 2013 with a round-up of the best fitness and pampering weekends away in the UK and abroad.

FOR... BEST

... A mind and body overhaul

Bootcamp Boutique, Yorkshire A beautiful country house perched in the hills of North Yorkshire, with delicious food served by a personal chef, doesn’t really sound like the setting for a boot camp.

58

There’s also the opportunity to hike to Malham Cove, where scenes from Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows were filmed. Days finally end at 6pm with an ice bath (incredibly painful, but extremely necessary) and a dip in the hot tub (divine). But fitness isn’t the only focus at Lifestyle 247; the idea is for people to leave feeling and looking fantastic. In-house psychologist Lesley, who uses similar techniques to Paul McKenna, teaches valuable techniques to deal with stress. Guests are also treated to Cavisculpt sessions, non-surgical liposuction that melts away your lumps and bumps. Another plus point is - surprisingly - the food. Chef Miranda prepares a selection of fabulous dairy, gluten and wheat-free treats. Everything she uses is locally sourced and organic. Lifestyle 247 certainly isn’t an easy ride, but if you want to start a new fitness regime this is the place to do it. :: Lifestyle 247 offers three-night packages at Bootcamp Boutique from £730 per person, including accommodation and meals. .. Getting fit

Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire

“For some people it’s a week away but it’s also the start of a new lifestyle, or the reboot of a lifestyle for others,” he says.

If you’re a regular exerciser who has hit a barrier and is stuck in the same weekly routine, Clumber Park is definitely the place for you.

Boot camp days are structured around a combination of cardio and core exercises, which can be adapted to individual fitness levels.

Launching this month, the six-day boot camp will take groups of up to 12 people and put them through their paces through a combination and variety of interesting and challenging activities.

A sample day starts with a warm-up at 7am in the beautiful surroundings of the National Trust park near Worksop in Nottinghamshire, followed by cardio circuits in the hotel’s grounds and a circuit of an Army-accredited assault course (complete with camouflage jumpsuit).

The project has been devised by the hotel’s expert fitness trainer Kyle Hanrahan, who devised the programme to concentrate on individuality, team work and fun. He says the workouts are designed to be intense, life-changing and not just a walk in the park.

... A pampering treat

You can even air your spring/summer ‘13 wardrobe with temperatures ranging from a mild 17 to 30 degrees all year round. The setting, treatments and techniques are inspired by the surroundings, with products created in Morocco and active ingredients including Argan oil, north African prickly pear seed oil, Sahara sand and local sea salts. Unwind in the vast marble and mosaic traditional hammam, then choose from a menu of sensory treatments. A highlight is the Mazagan Escape, a salt and oil full body exfoliation. Afterwards retreat to the relaxation room, with windows looking out to sea. It would be easy to switch off completely at Mazagan but there are also opportunities to be active. Try horse riding on the beach, where you can vary from beginner’s trot to experienced gallop through the sea. Alternatively, Pilates and yoga classes are available. because quality matters

Other activities include aptly named “suicides”, shuttle runs, flipping 30kg tractor tyres, speed ladders, mini hurdles and rope-climbing. And you won’t go hungry - the food here is plentiful, healthy and tasty. A nutritionist helps individuals to devise a personal eating plan, while Kyle also prepares an exercise plan for attendees to take home. :: A six-day camp starts at £799 per person including accommodation, meals and all activities. Visit www. clumberparkhotel.com for dates of forthcoming camps.

Providing you can show some restraint, nourish from the inside with authentic Moroccan fare at Morjana restaurant or fresh local seafood at Sel de Mer. Mazagan may be a sprawling resort with 500 rooms but service doesn’t suffer in the slightest. The minute you put your china cup down it’s topped up with refreshing (but sugary) tazota tea, poured from a great height by waiters in colourful djellaba robes. For an authentic souvenir of your stay, the mehndi henna decoration is a must. The intricate adornments on your hands or feet can be a reminder of your clean living regime. :: Doubles from 156 Euros per night including breakfast. Visit: www.mazaganbeachresort.com.

.. A refreshing change

Arosa, Switzerland Spending time at a ski resort in winter without doing any skiing might seem like sacrilege to some, but Arosa in Switzerland has more than enough to keep visitors occupied. The journey alone to the town, some 5,900ft up in the mountains in the Graubunden area of eastern Switzerland, is one to be enjoyed. The train from Chur winds its way up into the mountains past spectacular scenery with the hour-long journey offering plenty of time to gaze out of the window at the cascading waterfalls, traditional wooden Alpine huts and goats grazing on the hillside.

Inside a swimming pool, sauna, solarium, gym and pretty much every kind of spa treatment imaginable are offered over four floors.

Opposite the town’s train station - the last on the line - is a large lake, which freezes over in winter, making it the ideal location for a variety of sports tournaments, including horseracing.

Even more impressive is the hotel’s very own ski lift, the Tschuggen Express, which takes guests from the grounds right up to the slopes.

The fresh mountain air is invigorating, but the four-star Sporthotel Valsana also offers a programme of outdoor activities and spa treats guaranteed to give visitors a new lease of life.

Even if you’re not skiing, you can use it to toboggan back down and zip straight into the spa.

Tobogganing, trekking and snow-shoeing are all possible in the winter months - along with 7km ski runs if the urge takes you. For pampering, guests can head to sister hotel, the five-star Tschuggen Grand Hotel. The striking glass and steel building, connected to the hotel by a suspended walkway, was designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta to look like sails rising out of the mountainside.

:: Double rooms at the Sporthotel Valsana start from £148 per person, per night (based on two adults sharing on half board basis). Visit www.valsana.ch. :: Swiss International Airlines operates 34 daily flights from London Heathrow, London City, Birmingham International, Manchester and Dublin to Switzerland. ICE is the largest and most comprehensive event on the gaming calendar which regularly attracts the broadest spectrum of international gaming professionals each year. Every sector of the industry will be represented including betting, bingo, casino, lottery, mobile, online and social gaming. GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE SUPPORTS ENERGY EFFICIENCY DELEGATES who successfully completed a course to help their organisations become more energy efficient were presented with their certificates today. The Certificate in Energy Management Principles course was jointly subsidised by the Department of Economic Development and the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture. It was specifically designed to provide new ideas and approaches to professionals in the public and private sector with responsibility for energy management within their organisations. The course supports two of the Department of Economic Development’s policy aims which are to assist Isle of Man organisations and businesses to secure the efficient use of affordable energy and to minimise the impact of its use on the environment through training and networking. Laurence Skelly MHK, Political Member for the Department of Economic Development with responsibility for the Clean Tech sector, said: ‘All organisations on the Island are affected by rising energy costs and I am therefore delighted that so many of our local organisations participated in this training course. The Department of Economic Development is committed to helping businesses work towards a more sustainable future and we see the encouragement of energy efficiency in businesses as vital.’ In addition to energy management training, the Department of Economic Development operates a 0% Green Business Loan Scheme. Anyone requiring further information on the Scheme should contact Richard Cuthbert, Development Executive, on 01624 682367 or by email at Richard.cuthbert@gov.im . FROM CHILDREN TO PENSIONS – JCC IOM START 2013 WITH WIDESPREAD AUDIENCE APPEAL Just a few weeks into 2013 and the Junior Chamber of Commerce (JCC IOM) have made their first charitable donation and staged their first speaker event. It’s just the beginning of a packed schedule of activities in 2013 for their 220+ members, covering all business sectors and levels of experience. “Over 100 of our members enjoyed a gourmet Christmas buffet prepared by Tickethall Chef Steve Quirk, with donations for a raffle kindly supplied by Barclays, Kestrel Insurance, DL Fitness, Hanleys and Browne Craine & Co” commented JCC IOM Chairman Chris Darnill. “We were delighted to present The Children’s Centre with a cheque for £600 as part of our ongoing plans to benefit the Island as a whole through our events and member networks. It’s a cracking start to the year and already have an event planned every month.

Stuart Clifford from Baker Tilly Isle of Man pulled in over 70 members and guests. The presentation was certainly thought provoking and conveyed to the audience not only the importance of reviewing retirement arrangements on an ongoing basis but also the questions to consider and options available”. February’s flag ship Budget Breakfast event takes place on the 20th with the Treasury Minister Hon. Eddie Teare MHK and it is always a sell out – early booking is recommended. Membership of JCC IOM is open to all – individual membership is just £40 per year (£30 for renewals) or Corporate membership is £180 (£150 for renewals). “January’s ‘Know Your Pension’ event sponsored by Barclays and delivered by A Thrilling Evening with the Action Man of British Politics Members and guests of the Isle of Man Sporting and Dining Club will soon get the chance to enjoy an evening in the company of former Lib Dem leader and action man of British politics, Lord Paddy Ashdown, courtesy of Lloyds TSB, Isle of Man. Entitled ‘A Brilliant Little Operation’, Lord Ashdown’s sponsored presentation provides the first full account of how the Cockleshell Heroes mounted what is considered to be the greatest commando raid of World War 2 as well as provide an account of his career as a Special Boat Services commando, British diplomat, UN High Representative and leading politician. Known as ‘Operation Frankton’, the now legendary raid took place in Nazi occupied Bordeaux in 1942 and saw a team of elite commandos target the harbour complex and supply station to the German Army in the city. The team succeeded in sinking one ship, incapacitating several others, doing enough damage to the city’s port to severely disrupt the German war effort and, because quality matters

according to Winston Churchill, shorten World War 2 by around six months, saving thousands of lives in the process. Paddy Ashdown chanced to meet the raid’s leader and one of the founders of the now renowned Special Boat Service, Herbert ‘Blondie’ Hasler, just once and went on to write the definitive account of the amazing wartime raid as a result. By delving deep into the French national archives, tracing surviving witnesses and drawing upon his own commando experience, Ashdown uncovers the real truth about how the Cockleshell raid came to be a disturbing saga of interdepartmental rivalry and misinformation in Whitehall, rendering the entire operation far more complex than necessary and possibly resulting in needless deaths. Lord Ashdown’s written account, A Brilliant Little Operation, was published in 2012. Taking place on the 27th March, tickets to the Lloyds TSB sponsored ‘A Brilliant Little Operation’ are available exclusively via the Gaiety Theatre ticketing system or at the Villa Marina Box Office.

business

Sigma AccountinG Sigma Accounting specialises in providing accountancy and business advisory services to owner managed businesses based on the Isle of Man. Sigma is a member firm of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and is owned and run by Ian Gribble; a Chartered Accountant with over ten years experience in both practice and industry. Ian’s experience ranges from basic bookkeeping and accounts preparation services for sole traders, to audit and complex financial modelling for publicly quoted companies with multi million pound balance sheets. The firm focuses on offering clients a high level of service that is tailored to suit their exact requirements.

About the business:

6) Where do you see Sigma in the future?

1) You are a small firm – is that deliberate?

The key factor with our business is that we provide a high level of client service, which is what our clients want from us. If the business grew too large then I think we would lose that.

Yes, the firm is growing but I think to be able to provide a consistently good level of service to your clients you need to control growth carefully. 2) What is a typical client for you? We have quite a diverse range of clients including local trading businesses, consultants, other accountancy firms, and law firms, so we don’t really have a typical client. The one thing I suppose most of our clients have in common is that they are owner managed businesses, we do of course have personal tax clients as well.

I would like the business to grow but not at the expense of the level of service we currently provide, at the moment clients usually come to us because we have been recommended to them by someone who is happy with our work, I wouldn’t want that to change.

3) What should someone look for in their accountant? All chartered accountants should have the same level of basic competence, so it comes down to the level and quality of service on offer. I think it is important that people choose an accountant that matches the size of their business; a small consultancy firm for example is probably going to get a service more suited to their requirements from a smaller accounting firm. Similarly a firm of our size isn’t going to offer the service required by a business that employs hundreds of people. 4) What is your background? I studied mechanical engineering at university and after graduating spent several years working as a design and development engineer. Engineering as a profession didn’t offer what I had hoped it would so I looked around at what else took my fancy and decided to become a chartered accountant, I qualified with BDO and stayed with them for a while then moved into industry. Before setting up Sigma I was the finance director of an AIM quoted renewable energy business. 5) What advice would you give someone who is starting a business? I suppose the obvious thing for me to say, is make sure you have a good accountant! Although I would broaden that answer to: make sure that you take care of the financial and administrative aspects of your business, whether you do it yourself or use an accountant. Concentrating on the more interesting areas of your business and leaving everything else to pile up, so you need help to sort out a mess at the year end, isn’t going to be the most cost effective way of doing things. If you use an accountant make sure you know how much it is going to cost and that there are no hidden fees. We offer both fixed fees and hourly rates dependant on the client’s needs.

AUDI RS 7

Scorching pace for new Audi RS 7 Audi has announced a ballistic new RS 7 Sportback to widen the expanding highperformance RS range still further. Priced at around £84,000 ahead of the order books opening in the summer, the RS 7 will be available in various shades from relatively genteel to completely mad, all of them with supercar-chasing acceleration. The 0-62mph sprint is conquered in just 3.9 seconds, while top speed is one of the madness measures that speed freaks can use to tailor the car to their desires. The standard 155mph limit can be raised to 174mph or 189mph, while the standard exhaust system can be made more vocal at the touch of a button. A further step is a throaty sports exhaust system from the options list which increases bass, tone and volume even further, making the most of the sonorous V8’s talents. The 552bhp engine is the same 4.0-litre twinturbo unit fitted to the recently-announced RS 6 and the Bentley Continental GT V8, with the latest cylinder deactivation technology and up to 28.8mpg possible. Its ferocious pace comes relentlessly, with peak power delivered hot between 5,700rpm and 6,700rpm and peak torque spread from 1,750rpm to 5,500rpm.

76

It is likely that configuring the car to a point topping ÂŁ100,000 will be very easy.

VAUXHALL ASTON MARTIN Aston Martin reveals limited Centenary Edition models Aston Martin has announced a limited run of special anniversary edition models based on four of its model lines, in batches of just 100 worldwide. The Centenary Edition Vanquish, DB9, V8 Vantage and Rapide will be revealed in due course, with the Vanquish the first to see daylight with a host of special upgraded parts and visual niceties that will largely be shared by all the other ranges.

Two petrols and one diesel will be available to order from the car’s launch, with a second diesel arriving soon afterwards. A 138bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine is the cheapest and achieves nearly 45mph with CO2 measured at 148g/km. Automatic gearboxes can be specified with the 163bhp diesel, while a six-speed auto is standard on the SIDI petrol engine.

He added: “The chance to own and enjoy such a stunning piece of Aston Martin’s heritage is made all the more rare by the fact that we are limiting numbers to just 100 of each model line. I am sure supporters and enthusiasts of the brand worldwide will be anxious to secure their chosen model quickly!” because quality matters

2013’S BEST GADGETS

G

uess what everyone, it’s 2013, which means a. we survived December’s scheduled apocalypse, and b. it’s the future. If the people making the predictions in the 20th Century were correct, we should now either have hover boards, time machines and laser guns at our disposal,

GOOGLE GLASS

Why was Google co-founder Sergey Brin spotted recently riding the New York subway, when he could definitely afford a taxi? Answer: to test out and show off Glass, the new invention from the Google X Lab. Ladies and gentlemen, ‘augmented reality’ is about to become a very real part of our lives. Essentially, it’s a computer built into a pair of glasses. By looking up and to the right, you can take photos, connect to the web, chat with friends and probably even play solitaire. If you get freaked out by people seemingly talking to themselves when they’re on Bluetooth, imagine how it’ll look when they’re watching a Youtube video of the world’s weirdest cats on their Google Glasses. GOOGLE GLASS IS EXPECTED THIS SUMMER, RETAILING AT £750 APPROX

or be living in a nightmarish Orwellian dystopia. Well, they were half right. If it’s any consolation, living in ‘the future’ means that there are some rather nifty gadgets available. Here’s our pick of the best that 2013 has to offer.

XBOX 720 / PLAYSTATION 4

This year’s big gaming console battle will be fought out between the new upcoming machines from Microsoft and Playstation. With a rumoured eight core CPU measuring 1.6GHz, 8GB of RAM and an 800MHz graphics card (up from the current model’s 500), the new Xbox is certain to be getting gamers hot under the collar. Microsoft also recently filed a patent for technology allowing augmented reality 3D images to be projected on to your walls, giving users a fully immersive experience. The Playstation will be hoping to trump the Xbox with even more power (1.83 terraflops to Microsoft’s 1.23, tech fans), a brand new controller featuring an LCD touchscreen and biometric sensors on the grips, and 4K resolution, meaning images will be crisper, clearer and sharper than ever before, and compatible with 4K televisions, another gadget set to storm the market this year. If HMV can make it through the year, these two new consoles are likely to have people queuing at their doors in their masses. XBOX 720 AND PLAYSTATION 4 ARE EXPECTED IN LATE 2013, PRICE TBA

MUSE HEADBAND

The Muse headband is proper futuristic. Pop it on your bonce and it measures your brainwaves in real-time, and sends those to your iOS or Android device, allowing you to see how well your brain is performing, giving you the ability to control application and games with your mind, as well as purportedly being able to help you improve your memory and concentration, and reduce stress. Using sensors to detect electrical outputs generated by your brain and algorithms to detect the changes in activity, Muse is able to show what your brain is doing, in the same way as a heart monitor does with your heart. It also comes with an ‘Integrated Brain Health System’ – a series of exercises designed to “help you build better brain health habits.’ But, how can we be sure they haven’t put a sneaky ‘exercise’ on their designed to give you Tourette’s or make you vote UKIP? YELLOW JACKET STUN GUN IPHONE CASE

This invention is not only probably illegal in the UK and Jersey, but also surely invented by a complete madman. However, about 1,000 people didn’t seem to think so and clubbed together to fund the product to the tune of $100,000 via the crowd-funding website Indiegogo. The Yellow Jacket is like a regular smartphone case, except it contains a 650V battery and a switch that allows you to turn your phone into a stun gun to fend off any would-be attackers. The design has a safeguard against the risk of accidentally flipping the switch and electrocuting yourself, and has its own external battery which is able to add an extra 20 hours to your smartphone battery. Probably best to remember not to take it with you on a plane though. VISIT WWW.YELLOWJACKETCASE.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION

APPLE iTV

SPIRIT ONE HEADPHONES

Slated for release in October 2013 (although perhaps later in the UK while licensing deals with British TV channels are negotiated), the iTV sees Apple finally make its move into the television market. If it’s able to revolutionise the industry in the way that it has for telecommunications, this could be truly huge. Integrating Mac systems with your regular television features, an added bonus of owning one of these could be the ability to use your iPhone as a remote control, as well as voice and facial recognition capabilities. Which raises the question, when you say ‘iTV’ to it, will it turn to ITV or simply reply with, “Yes?” THE APPLE ITV IS EXPECTED LATER THIS YEAR.

Another product making a splash at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in the US is the Spirit One. They’re created by French company Focal, who up until now have specialized in high end speakers for home cinemas and recording studios, so they know a thing or two about sound quality. By all accounts they’ve carried that know-how over to the headphone market, with superb noise isolation, and are designed to be used with your smartphone, with a remote control on the cable and an in-built mic allowing you to make and take calls. SPIRIT ONE HEADPHONES ARE £180 FROM WWW.FOCAL.COM

MONSTER INSPIRATION OVER EAR HEADPHONES

“Noise cancelling” is a term that you can find on nearly all over-ear headphones nowadays. However, it doesn’t take long before you realise that most companies lie. Monster are the exception to this rule. With active noise cancelling that doesn’t diminish the sound of your music, these headphones have interchangeable headbands so that you can personally style them to your taste. They are available in three colours, White, Titanium and Silver, so your headwear is truly adaptable to whatever style you want. The Control-Talk™ inline remote and microphone allow you to play, pause and fully control your music and phone calls easily and quickly. PRICE £220

Taking The iPhone 5 Camera Seriously Okay, we all know that any mobile phone camera will never deliver the stunning results of a dedicated DSLR professional camera and lens. Or can they? Recently new mobiles, such as Apple’s superb iPhone 5, now include a half decent camera, which has improved dramatically with each new generation of iPhone.

You will be now thinking how on earth do I mount a iPhone on a tripod? Well, while the iPhone doesn’t have the handy 1/4 inch tripod mounting hole, the new iPhone 5 is far too slim for that, there are a couple of handy mobile phone tripod mounts now out on the market. One of these is the Joby Grip Tight, which basically grips your expensive smart phone really tight while proving a mount for your tripod. The Joby Grip Tight can be used with any make of smart phone too. With your iPhone mounted firmly on your tripod, you will now be able to get sharper images (or video for that matter). To reduce any doubt of camera movement, you can use your iPhone earphones as a cable release to remotely take the pictures when the phone is put into camera mode. Don’t forget to tap the screen where you want the main area of focus to be too before taking the picture. On the iPhone, you can turn on the grid on the camera app, which helps greatly with picture composition and ‘rule of thirds’ and also turn on the HDR mode too. In HDR (high dynamic range) mode, the camera takes two images. One is a normal picture and the second is a HDR image. This is often the better shot in terms of detail and sharpness. However, the HDR effect doesn’t work well on night time shots.

While most people use their cameras on their phones to take snaps of the family, meals they are about to eat or embarrassing moments in a pub or nightclub, but can you use the camera to take photographs that could be of a publishable quality? The iPhone 5 camera technical specifications are fairly high, so it has the capabilities of producing good quality pictures. While it doesn’t have a zoom lens of such, the 3.85mm (f/2.8) lens, which corresponds to 35mm film camera equivalent lens of 29.4mm (f/21.4) is a decent lens. You will have to use an old fashioned method of zooming with your iPhone camera, that is, walking backwards and forwards until the frame is filled correctly. So, how do you do you get a half decent image on a iPhone 5? Simple, all you have to do is apply a few basic rules that have been around since the beginning of photography. While you can get superb shots by just pointing and shooting, with a little more care and time you can produce something even better.

The iPhone camera can produce with a bit of care great portrait, landscape, macro and action shots. A little extra work on your computer using the likes of Photoshop or on Instagram can further enhance your pictures. Remember, apart from the limitations of the size of the lens on the iPhone, the size of the pictures in terms of pixels and sensor recording the images are the same as what was used in a pro DSLR camera a few years ago. While a smart phone camera will never replace a pro camera, most people don’t walk around with this type of camera all day, every day, however we do have our phones with us all the time. And to quote photographer Chase Jarvis “The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You”. The iPhone 5 camera is very capable and ready to go in your pocket 24/7, so you really have no excuse for not getting a good picture now.

The first basic rule is probably the most important, and this rule applies to all branches of photography from the humble mobile phone camera right up to an expensive pro camera. To get a sharp image you must hold the camera rock steady, and the best way to do this is to mount the camera on a tripod.

The Mini has the same design as the full size version and with its 1GHz dual core processor. It is very capable of running games and applications without delays or buffering problems. The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini comes with a 5-megapixel camera and a Super AMOLED display for superb colour reproduction, giving you the opportunity to really enjoy and then share your latest photos, music and videos.

FROM MINI TO MASSIVE (AND IT’S FREE)! In the world of mobile devices, massive means anything bigger than a smartphone handset. This is true of the Samsung Galaxy Tab2, but crucially, this powerful tablet comes in a size that’s easy to carry and use. The Tab2 is half the weight of the iPad and - with a 7inch screen - it is also significantly smaller giving you a fantastic viewing experience whilst remaining easily portable. Running on Android 4.0 - the Ice-Cream Sandwich version of the operating system - the Tab2 gives you an incredible multimedia experience that is made even better with Samsung Hub, which gives you access to thousands of music, video, book and game titles. Full HD video enhances your viewing experience and the playback quality of your own videos, which - of course - you can record on either your Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini or the Tab2, because sharing between the two devices is so easy. SO, WHY SETTLE FOR ONE WHEN YOU CAN HAVE TWO? POP INTO YOUR LOCAL SURE STORE TODAY TO GET YOUR MINI AND TAB2 FREE WHEN YOU CHOOSE THE £36/MONTH SURE SMARTPLAN. WWW.SURECW.COM

Over the last 18 months, the Isle of Man has hosted a U.K. Street Dance champion, a dancer from a world famous Break dancing Crew, and the founder of the U.K.’s largest Hip Hop Dance organisation. Dancers from the Island have travelled over to England to battle – compete – with dancers from all over the world, and just last month a group of dancers from Manchester visited the Island to see for themselves what we’re up to on the Isle of Man. At the centre of all of this is Represent Dance Company, established 5 years ago and now firmly established as the place to go to learn the real deal on Street Dance on the Isle of Man. With classes for everyone from 5 to 50, there’s something for everyone – and it isn’t all head-spins and acrobatics! The most important thing we teach is how to move with rhythm and express yourself freely – its incredibly good fun and most importantly, its very easy to learn...Even if you think of yourself as having two left feet.

So, if all that sounds good to you, check out more about us and our classes at www. representdance.co.uk, or get in touch at info@representdance.co.uk or 408545 – open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. isle of man premier magazine

VOLLEYBALL

it’s on Island and gaining in numbers!

Launched in December 2012, the Isle of Man Volleyball Club has taken centre stage on the Manx sporting scene, attracting plenty of attention in the local media. The club was born with the objective to introduce and promote Volleyball on the Island. allowing those who want to learn, improve or get back into it, to do so in a friendly and inclusive environment.

Weekly training sessions have been held in QE2’s gym in Peel and recently have been attracting a considerable amount of participants.

contact to let them know you’re coming. If you have played before that’s great, but it’s not a requirement, as most participants are new to the sport.

Each training session consists of a warm-up, technique and skill exercises, training drills and then leads into a match. In addition to the basic skill-set, you will be learning the basics of the game and the rules, and hopefully some new friends in the process!

No club membership fee is required, all participants simply pay £4 per session towards the use of the Sports facility.

Joining the group is very simple: all you need to do is show up to one of the training sessions, however it’s a good idea to make

The Isle of Man Volleyball Club is proudly sponsored by the Hive – Creative Services and the Middleton-Katz Professional services group. www.middletonkatz.com

Nexus Vodka and Sushi Bar is one of Douglas’ newest best kept secrets, serving exceptional food, fine wines, champagnes, beers, spirits and designer cocktails. The only bar on the Island to serve the famous ‘Russian Standard Vodka’ as their house pouring vodka! You can even book a table and buy your vodka by the bottle with mixers so you can stay at your table amongst friends with no need to go back to the busy bar! Champagne is brought to your table and presented with a stylish ‘ice fountain’ sparkler which makes any occasion that bit more special! ‘Our aim is to provide customers with a tantalising choice in beverages and food in a modern and comfortable environment. Quality customer service and choice of product is what we strive for and we aim to please’ Nigel Fogg, Managing Director. What is Nexus and how did it begin? Nexus opened before Christmas with a soft launch, like any good business we wanted to ensure that our offering is exactly right. We are constantly monitoring our standards of quality and with the regular addition of new vodkas and products we are ensuring our quality position is maintained. Nexus actually means ‘a connection or series of connections linking two or more things’ which is what the bar is. It’s a connection between the established businesses of Cunard apartments directly connected to the bar. Cunard apartments are quality 4 * deluxe apartments and we maintain this quality throughout the building to a very high spec. The project started in 2003 from planning stage through development. Nexus bar has developed over the progressive years of the project. We have formed a combined building where those who enjoy the apartments have the luxury of Nexus bar and likewise those who entertain Nexus bar have the advantage of the apartments just above. Amazing offers are currently available. Anyone looking for a stay at the apartments will get a discount off their food and drinks at Nexus. Alternatively anyone booking for an evening meal at Nexus will get discounted overnight accommodation in the apartments. Nexus bar really is the finale of the entire project! Nexus can offer your business exactly what you need, whether that be a business function, business breakfast club or a particular corporate event. With accommodation available in the same building, and being centrally located, Nexus is ideal for our business associates’ trip to the Isle of Man. It is equipped for presentations with three 60 inch screens placed around the venue and ample seating.

How about the team behind Nexus? Nigel Fogg is the Managing Director and is a double license holder with plenty of experience within the hospitality industry. As a Manxman he knows the Island and how to provide what the clients need whilst bringing a cosmopolitan twist too, ‘I aim to use my knowledge in this area which is why I hope you can see that Nexus is not a copy version but exists on its own merit!’ John Hamilton is the General Manager and has also been in the hospitality business for some time now, around 15 years on and off whilst promoting other areas of business in-between. I’ve worked on and off Island catering for a variety of clientele which has helped develop different skills and expertise in many areas which I can use to maximum advantage here at Nexus. Marcus Sutton is Head Chef and with over 36 years of experience, he has a passion for all food and specialises in ‘Asian Street Food’. Marcus was part of the initial team that launched the very first Yo Sushi restaurant in London in 1988. Prior to this he spent 3 years in Japan under Musashi who taught all the skills required of sushi cuisine. It was his love of fresh sea food that brought him to the Island 10 years ago. With quality ingredients being at the core of the business ethos, the ingredients are sourced locally and are of a high standard which ‘inspires me’. Marcus’ menu was inspired from the ‘Nexus’ atmosphere and style; he immediately knew platter style food would complement this modern venue. Keep a look out for theme nights and a varied mix of weekly DJ’s. Delicious snack, lunchtime and evening menus are available for sushi or the more classic dishes, enough to suit all tastes. Although we are a sushi and vodka bar we also serve the more classic dishes with all your regular beers and fine wines to suit! opening hours are
