ou may not know this, in fact, you may not want to know this but here goes...
I love a bit of onomatopoeia. There, I’ve said it, don’t judge me. The best words like “splash” or “bang” announce themselves boldly and unapologetically. Phrases like; “Splashing out” “splashing the cash” or “making a splash” always sounds positive and vivacious; no-one ever says “well, he went out with a big noise” or “he really trickled out the cash”. Everything about them oozes (another brilliant one) confidence and every phrase they fill sounds energetic and full of life.

The best place to find a new place in the Isle of Man
Upper Hillside, Ramsey - Only £367,500
So maybe we should kick off this spring unapologetically, be the very best versions of ourselves and bring a bit of drama back into our lives. April is a month that is definitely a hard working multi-tasker. Day one is not only Easter but also April Fool’s Day, so be inspired, this could be your time, the month for ringing the changes and pushing those boundaries or at least eating far too many chocolate eggs and tricking people, what’s not to like? You could commit to a new project/job/partner or actually finish something that you already started before the big winter chill, make a fresh start or even convince yourself to start revising for those exams! Whatever it is, this second quarter of 2018 is the time to go big or go home.

In true stereotypical British style, we’ve all started swapping our winter clothes and shows for summer ones. Now the freak snow day start to March has passed, and it’s stopped getting dark at 4.30pm, we’re ready and raring for sun, fun and making a splash. But this obsession with the sun leads us to obsessing about what we’ll look like whilst in it. The sudden leap from jumpers, jeans and boats to shorts, crop tops and dresses can cause heart palpitations for many. I am definitely one of those people. The realisation that my skin will soon be on show causes an alarming amount of stress for me. And it isn’t helped by the stupid amount of articles online, in magazines, on Snapchat and even Instagram telling me how to get my ‘summer body’. This is code for how to make yourself look aesthetically pleasing according to society’s standards of beauty.
It’s easy to get sucked into the idea that summer fun and frolics are reserved for those who’s thighs don’t jiggle when they run, have the perfect tan and a washboard stomach. It’s even easier to hate the people who DO have that. Many of us have a habit to project our envy towards the men and women we see on magazine covers, supplement advertisements and on social media with what is deemed to be a ‘perfect’ physique is hard to budge. But that’s only because that’s what we have been sold.
It’s honestly a damaging mind-set to be put in. Young girls and boys will half heartedly make jokes on social media about having to start dieting and exercising obsessively to get their bodies ‘summer ready’. This idea that your body isn’t ‘ready’ for others to see and that it needs to be worked on in order to be accepted can cause a lot of issues for your mental health. Do you expect other people to look like a model in a magazine when you’re down at the beach? Do you judge people for not being muscly, being too skinny, having stretch marks or cellulite? Hopefully your answer is no. So, if we don’t expect it from others, why do we expect it from ourselves?
Instead of obsessing over the inches you need to lose off your waist, or counting calories and depriving yourself of food, take some time to learn to love what you have. The way your body is built is how it’s meant to be, and there are some things that no amount of gym or diet can change. For example, if you have wide hips, or short legs, there’s nothing you can do to change it. You can’t make your bones a different shape, so don’t focus on it.
SIAM PARK - TENERIFE
Nothing says Summer Holidays quite like a day spent splashing about at a water park. For this month’s Splash issue I’ve been investigating the world’s best water parks, as voted for by the well-travelled and discerning users of Tripadvisor.
WE ARE OUR OWN HARSHEST CRITICS, BUT BEING NICER TO OURSELVES IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF LEARNING TO LOVE WHAT WE HAVE.
First of all, overly strict diets and excessive exercise isn’t healthy and won’t make you happy. Your body needs to be nurtured by good, healthy food and a good amount of moderate exercise, but pushing it to the extreme by starving it and over working will do damage.
WORDS Ria Wolstenholme ILLUSTRATION Russ Atkinson
I am by no means saying that looking after your body and wanting to work on it is a bad thing. It’s great if that’s what YOU want to do. But nobody should feel pressured to follow suit if it’s not what they want to do. Your health isn’t measured by how defined your abs are, or how perky your bum is. It’s measured by the quality of the life you’re living, and only you can set that standard.
Words By: Becky Evans
If you’d asked me a couple of years ago where the best Water Park in the world was, I’d probably have taken a guess at the over the top, no expense spared aquatic attractions of Orlando or Dubai. Imagine my surprise then to discover that the #1 rated park on earth, for 4 years in a row no less, is in humble Tenerife. I paid a visit, purely in the name of research, to see what all the fuss is about.
Celebrating its 10th Birthday this year, Siam Park is relatively new on the scene, yet attracts over 1.2 million visitors per year to sample its watery wonders. Adrenaline junkies make straight for the Tower of Terror Power, dominating feature of the park, and the only one I swerved. Those braver than I queue up to plunge 28 metres before whizzing through a shark tank at up to 80 kilometres per hour.
Siam Park is a Thai themed water kingdom stretched across a hillside just outside the popular resorts of Adeje and Playa de las Americas. Cleverly designed to make use of the steeply sloped terrain, most of the slides are low level and nestled amongst the landscaped grounds, and the resulting scarcity of high-rise structures visible from outside the gates serves to add to the intrigue for firsttime visitors.
For those who prefer a (very slightly) less heart-stopping experience, the dark and disorientating Volcano, scream-enducing Dragon or roller-coaster style Singha are just some of the options, whilst the less
adventurous can float lazily along the Mai Thai river, or relax on the impressive white sand Siam Beach, lapped by artificial waves. Can’t decide whether you belong in the shallows or the deep end? Naga Racer and Jungle Snake each offer a taste of excitement without the need for a change of swimwear. Smaller members of the family don’t miss out, with two dedicated areas designed to provide maximum fun for little ones. The Lost City boasts 15 slides, rope bridges and cascades, whilst Sawasdee offers scaled down versions of some of the park’s star attractions that I was sadly a shade too tall to try out.
“IMAGINE MY SURPRISE THEN TO DISCOVER THAT THE #1 RATED PARK ON EARTH, FOR 4 YEARS IN A ROW NO LESS, IS IN HUMBLE TENERIFE. I PAID A VISIT, PURELY IN THE NAME OF RESEARCH, TO SEE WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT.”
The best way to make a start on accepting yourself is by looking at what you do like about your body. Your eyes, your arms, your back; there will be something that you’re happy with, so don’t ignore it. Start with focusing on that when you look at yourself. Then start looking at yourself in the mirror with the mentality of ‘look how good that looks’ instead of ‘how could that look better?’. We are our own harshest critics, but being nicer to ourselves is the most important part of learning to love what we have.
If all this wasn’t enough already, Siam Park also boasts what is reportedly the largest Dragon Statue in the world. If that’s not worth a visit I really don’t know what is.
Your body doesn’t have to be molded and shaped into something new in order for it to be ready for a summer of fun. It doesn’t have to conform to what others feel is beautiful, because it already is in its own way. Embrace yourself, flaws and all, because you’re already perfect whatever the season.

ISLE OF MAN CYCLEFEST RETURNS FOR A THIRD YEAR WITH EXPANDED LINE UP OF MUSIC, CYCLING AND FAMILY FUN Wildwood Kin and Jake Isaac headline the line up of award winning music acts, LEGO brick challenge and ‘Sundown Cinema’ just two highlights in new raft of family entertainments
For many visitors to Milntown, Cyclefest is all about the music, and once again the ‘Roots ‘n’ Rhythms line up will be providing a stunning soundtrack for the weekend’s activities. Heading the bill on the PokerStars stage will be two brilliant breakthrough acts.

sle of Man Cyclefest presented by Isle of Man Bank returns to the glorious grounds of Milntown Estate for its third edition in 2018 with a new Spring date and its busiest programme of awardwinning music, mouth watering produce and family entertainment – not to mention some of the best cycling in the British Isles. Taking place across the weekend of the 21st and 22nd April, Isle of Man Cyclefest kicks off the Island’s festival season in style. Bigger and better than ever, the 2018 edition will boast three live music stages as well as new under-cover venues including the purpose built children’s activity Ti-Pi and the gigantic Cyclefest HQ - complete with festival bar and Cyclefest’s very own coffee shop!
Saturday’s headliners, Wildwood Kin, shot to prominence last year after being championed by Bob Harris, Jamie Cullum and Jo Willey amongst others. Boasting a hit debut album and a string of high profile singles, the group enjoyed feature appearances at Glastonbury 2017 and BBC Radio 2’s Festival in a Day, whilst also making a live appearance last month on the iconic TV show Old Grey Whistle Test. Sunday’s headliner is one of the most exciting and intriguing singer songwriters to emerge in recent years - Jake Isaac. He will be bringing his own brand of roots music to Cyclefest with his high energy ‘full album experience’. Mixing acoustic sounds with elements of rock, funk, soul and more, festivalgoers can expect big songs and big riffs to close the main stage. Complementing the larger groups and
bigger sounds on the PokerStars stage is Cyclefest’s ‘Little Lights’ stage set to feature more award-winning music with some the UK’s most talented young singer songwriters. And there’s even more for music lovers in 2018, with Cyclefest’s very own Festival Club. Each evening, the Cyclefest HQ will bounce to the new sounds of foot stomping Trad courtesy of stunning live act Elephant Sessions and BBC Folk Award winners Ross and Ali. As well as fantastic music, Isle of Man Cyclefest will also deliver a weekend’s worth of entertainment catering for young families. Making a first appearance at Milntown is everyone’s favourite toy - the world famous LEGO bricks! Under the guidance of Bright Bricks, the UK’s only LEGO Certified building firm, festivalgoers of all ages can contribute to a very special Cyclefest themed build, constructed from no less than 65,000 bricks! There’s nothing quite like meeting the author or illustrator of a favourite book and Cyclefest will be welcoming some very special guests to its kids activity TiPi. Ready to inspire and entertain young readers and budding artists alike, multi award winning author-illustrators Sarah McIntyre and Laura Ellen Anderson will guide visitors through their wonderful and wacky imaginations! Packed full of humour and invention, these events are perfect for booklovers of all ages – and there’s ample chance to grab some signed copies too, thanks to Bridge Bookshop! Fresh from working with top clients such as Waterstones, Cyclefest will also be welcoming Rosie Hudson of Rosie Tells Tales for a feast of interactive stories, activities and games around the gardens that will keep little minds occupied for hours. There’s more storytelling for the whole family too, as visitors to Milntown will also be able to learn more about the Island’s most haunted house with Cyclefest’s free Ghost Tours!
12
Also new for 2018, is the Cyclefest Sundown Cinema. Nestled under-covers in the children’s activity Ti-Pi, Cyclefest’s big screen will present a dazzling double bill of fantastic films running from teatime to sundown each day. Parents can even enjoy the day’s music headliners just a stone’s throw away while the little one’s laugh along to top animations and family favourites such as Paddington.

Your body needs to be nurtured by good, healthy food and a good amount of moderate exercise, but pushing it to the extreme by starving it and over working will do damage.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
The best way to make a start on accepting yourself is by looking at what you do like about your body. Your eyes, your arms, your back; there will be something that you’re happy with, so don’t ignore it. Start with focusing on that when you look at yourself. Then start looking at yourself in the mirror with the mentality of ‘look how good that looks’ instead of ‘how could that look better?’. We are our own harshest critics, but being nicer to ourselves is the most important part of learning to love what we have. Your body doesn’t have to be molded and shaped into something new in order for it to be ready for a summer of fun. It doesn’t have to conform to what others feel is beautiful, because it already is in its own way. Embrace yourself, flaws and all, because you’re already perfect whatever the season.

YEAH... IT’S A REAL BLIZZARD...
Help a hedgehog The ManxSPCA rescues, rehabilitates and releases several hundred wild animals and birds every year, including a fair few hedgehogs. Last year’s mild autumn resulted in some female hogs having second litters, meaning that their babies had very little time to put on sufficient body weight to be able to hibernate. This youngster survived and has spent the winter with us, and soon he will be ready for release.
ALSO, WHY ST TRINIANS? THE BUGGANE WEIRDLY REMOVES THE ROOF EVERY SO OFTEN.. SO.. A BIT COLD.
YEAH SORRY, MY BAD. I’M JUST NOT A FAN OF CEILING SPACE. ALTOCELAROPHOBIA YOU SEE. IT’S A HEREDITARY CONDITION.
March and April are the months when hedgehogs come out of hibernation. You can help them survive by providing them with a small bowl of dog or cat food (not fish flavoured, though) and a shallow bowl of water (not milk). Urban hogs need to be able to move freely from garden to garden, and so please make sure you have a few holes or gaps in your fence. For a fantastic summary of what we can all do to help these wonderful creatures go to www.diygarden. co.uk/wildlife/ultimate-guide-to-hedgehogs/
Tinker and Buttons Our rescue cats are not confined all day in their pens – some of them spend time in one of the three socialisation rooms in the cattery, with access to outdoor space; some roam freely around the cattery when it’s closed to the public; and some ‘help out’ in the reception area office. This suits cats with big personalities – cats like Tinker. He decided that he would man the reception desk and take up position on a chair to meet and greet passers-by. He is very talkative and eager to please and is a real ‘people person’. His keyboard skills, however, leave a lot to be desired and so he really needs a new job, one that involves being someone’s companion and loyal friend. As much as he loves human company, he is very bonded to another young male called Buttons who is a little bit more reserved and shy. It is obvious that both Tinker and Buttons were very cherished and well cared for by their previous owner, whose increasing ill health has meant that she needed to part with them. We would love to be able to report back to her that her boys have found a wonderful new home together, and give her peace of mind – can you help? ManxSPCA • Ard Jerkyll, East Foxdale • Tel: 851672

When I first meet Rowan she is everything I expected a Marine Scientist to be: an animal-loving, planet-preservation-advocating, vegetarian, but as I get the opportunity to interrogate her further, I quickly realise that I was selling her extremely short with my initial stereotypical preconception and that there is so much more to this free-spirited, independent and inspirational natural beauty. Manx born and bred, Rowan travelled off-island to complete her degree and masters in marine science at Plymouth University before journeying farther afield to Sri Lanka, Australia and Indonesia. During these travels she completed her dive master qualification, enabling her to immerse herself, both metaphorically and literally, in the ocean and all things within it. It is at an exciting junction in her career that I meet Rowan as in just two months time she will embark on an adventure that will take her to some of the most beautiful and vulnerable parts of the world. On 23rd June she will join an all-female crew, as a marine scientist on board “Sea Dragon”, a 72-foot sailing boat. She will join ‘Exxpedition’, a fourteen-strong female crew that will include filmmakers, journalists and scientists, tasked with crossing the great pacific gyre, to take samples and draw attention to the devastating impact of plastic pollution. What lead you to where you are today? Well, I guess my love for the ocean really; it’s been something that’s been pretty consistent in my life. Even when I was really little, I loved watching the shrimps dart about in the rock pools at Langness, and then when I got a bit bigger my dad started taking me snorkelling with the seals and that just totally blew my mind! I was never really sure exactly what I wanted to do, but I saw a degree in Ocean Science down at Plymouth and thought I would go for it. From the moment I got there, I was like “yea..this is exactly what I want to do with my life”!, and it’s all gone from there really.
really got behind the expedition which is just so cool. We are going to have two events: the first before the expedition on the 11th May. It’s going to be Hawaiian themed and I’ll be talking a little bit about what are doing on the trip and why we are doing it. The guys down at the Foraging Vintners have had some crazy and outrageous ideas for the event and I’m so excited! Come on down to it! Then after the expedition there will be a Canadian themed event at Noa Bakehouse, with live music and a bit of a celebration; it’s all gonna be a lot of fun! What are you currently doing on the Isle of Man to promote environmental responsibility? I’ve just started working with the Isle of Man Government, trying to figure out the most effective way the government, and potentially the island, can reduce its single-use plastic usage. It’s exciting to be part of the project and I’m really happy they asked me to get involved. I also have a small environmental group called Sustain our Seas - Isle of Man (https://www.facebook.com/sustain.our. seas/), the group aims to raise awareness of the ocean and its conservation through creative projects. A few years ago we put on an exhibition called ‘The Ocean Art Show’ which was really successful and we’re planning to put another one on later this year so watch this space!
Imagine if all 7 billion of us decided to make that individual decision to reduce our plastic usage... it would be amazing!
What are you doing this summer? This summer I’ll be sailing across the Pacific Ocean, from Hawaii to Vancouver for 3 ½ weeks with an organisation called Exxpedition. I’ll be part of an all-female crew investigating the devastating impact of plastic pollution in the North Pacific Central Gyre, otherwise known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Why this route? Well ocean gyres are large circulating currents in which plastic debris collects. We are going to go straight through the middle to take samples and try to raise some awareness so we can figure out a solution to this devastating problem. What do you plan to take with you? My cabin allowance is really small, a 50cm by 20cm box, so…not much! I’ll make sure I take my Ballan Cross though, it will keep me safe while I’m at sea...and remind me of our beautiful island while I’m crossing the ocean. How are you funding your trip? I’ve been saving as much as possible, and also doing a bit of fundraising. I’ve had so much amazing support and I’ve been so touched by it. I’ve been organising some really exciting fundraising events with the Foraging Vintners and Noa Bakehouse; they have
When you’re not being a pioneer for the protection of the planet, what do you like to do in your down-time? I like to do what most 20 somethings like to do, I love going out with my friends and have a laugh. I really love to get in the water whenever I can, whether that’s surfing, diving or freediving; it just resets me, I can’t really explain it but if I haven’t been in the water for a while I don’t feel right.
Who are your idols? I guess I’ve got a few different idols, I really look up to woman in science, particularly Sylvia Earle… she is an amazing speaker and has really paved the way for female marine scientists. But then most of my other idols are people I know, family and friends, my mum is really the most incredible woman. I have some really amazing friends that are absolutely killing it, so passionate about their own projects, they inspire me, and we boost each other up, the way it should be...they are my idols. What can local Manx people do on a small scale to assist with plastic use reduction? I would say start with the basics, carry a reusable water, say ‘no’ to plastic straws, bring a reusable bag to the supermarket. People always say “What difference will one person’s actions make?”, but imagine if all 7 billion of us decided to make that individual decision to reduce our plastic usage...it would be amazing! We are in a position now that by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish…we need to act now! What can people do to help you on your way? Come down to one of the events at Foraging Vintners and Noa Bakehouse; tickets for foraging Vintners are £10 and include some tasty pizza and a glass of fizz. Details for the Noa Bakehouse event will be confirmed later on but we’ve got some great plans. Also, if you are a business owner, there is availability for corporate sponsors…please get in touch!

If you aren’t familiar with the book, Ready Player One takes the inclusion of pop culture reference points in media to a new extreme. Barely a paragraph slides by without multiple nods, winks and outright steals from other works of fiction, and it’s clear that Spielberg took this idea and ran as far as the copyright lawyers would let him. However, whilst nostalgia and parody might work well on TV or in small doses, cinema tickets aren’t cheap. The studio has taken a gamble that audiences are willing to shell out to see a movie that mainly works by reminding them of a slew of things they’ve paid to see before. Although I predict it will prove to be a safe bet, and the film will make massive piles of cash, I’d like to understand how we got to a point where something like this is considered a safe investment. Have we run out of new ideas? Is pop culture eating itself?
able to pick up on allusions to Pokémon or Batman. Maybe it’s because so many nerds ended up producing entertainment themselves, but we live in a culture shaped by The Simpsons and its many imitators, by ironic internet memes, by Marvel movies and video games. Ready Player One is the purest example of a phenomenon that sees new entertainments endlessly recycling bits from the past, like samples in rap music or the deathless reanimation of 80s fashion every ten years. It’s as if we’ve come to accept that all the good stories have already been told.A key example is the pop culture juggernaut of the Star Wars franchise. After a weird detour via the critically-panned (albeit highly profitable) prequels, we are now at a stage where every second Star Wars film either makes reference to the destruction of the original Death Star, or just rehashes it in a new form. The cash returns from even rubbish films in the series would suggest that Disney could afford to take some risks, but aside from marginally more

Will we reach the point where new generations have experienced so much nostalgia for 80s and 90s culture that it stunts their ability to tell stories without referring to the things they’ve already seen? We might be trapped forever like Pac-Man, in an endless maze of Death Star explosions and Spiderman reboots, as the profit numbers multiply upwards for the Disney corporation and the cinema chains.
A never ending story?
In all likelihood we’ve been here before. If there is hope it lies with the teens. Although we’re currently dominated by the influence of 80s and 90s geek culture, this isn’t unexpected and it can’t last forever. Much like the influence of the 1960s generation over rock music and literature, the nostalgic influence of 80s and 90s culture is so strong because it’s inseparable from a series of seismic changes to the media landscape, Outside the realm of comedy and kids’ and from the tastes of the influential people movies this is the first time that a megawho helped create those changes. FRIGHTFULLY FESTIVE
Welsh water enthusiasts were (trick or) treated to a supposedly festive surprise last December when staff at the Tredegar Sports Centre in Blaenau Gwent added a temporary dye (or should that be 'die'?) to their swimming pool's water in the name of family fun.
FLIPPED FLIPPERS
Likely a fairly common photograph stunt within synchronised swimming and possibly even freediving circles, we still thought this'd be worth sharing for the benefit of, well, everyone else. Plus it's bang on theme this month and also pretty nifty. Using a fairy straightforward image flipping technique to complete the illusion, synchronised swimmer Lenka Tanner, who featured in a Kuoni ad that used this stunt, explains the slightly less straightforward technique employed on the swimming side of things in a YouTube video but we'll summarise it here for you. The first notable point is holding your breath (a very important basic underwater survival technique) with lungs full of air, and then performing either a forward or backward roll to your taste. The choice is yours. Then, in an inverted standing position, exhale slightly until your feet are just skimming the surface and use your hands to maintain balance, then, well, pretend you're walking. It sounds so simple, right? So why not shake off your swimmers from last summer and practise this for yourself? After all, it's probably warmer in the sea at the moment than it is outside. Just don't forget a survival blanket and a Thermos for afterwards. Also, try not to forget to have somebody take your photograph whilst you're at it. This kind of thing probably doesn't translate well to selfie form.
Following the success of a Halloween themed orange dye in their popular pool, staff decided that adding a red dye would be the perfect addition to get people in the mood for Christmas. Unsurprisingly, you have to admit, what actually happened was that the floodgates were opened up for a raft of comments on Facebook* including; 'looks like someone has had a swim with Jaws', 'I love swimming in pools full of blood', 'it's like when they open the lifts in The Shining', and the concise but valid question; 'who died?'. The spokesperson from Aneurin Leisure, who run the leisure centre, didn't pass comment on the last question but I suspect that the answer was 'Noel'. Noel died. Poor Noel. *Other social networking sites are available, although primarily used solely by Google employees.
*At least two other video streaming websites are available, but they mostly cater for leaked USAF drone footage, Russian dashcam video montages and arty student films respectively.

now – 22.04.2018 3 CONTEMPORARIES //SAYLE GALLERY, DOUGLAS//
Following last month’s solo exhibition of David Gilbert’s art, ‘3 Contemporaries’ puts his work in context alongside two of his contemporaries, Norman Sayle and David Fletcher in an exciting exhibition which offers a rare opportunity to see works from the artists’ private collections. ‘3 Contemporaries’ honours the legacy and influence of these three men: friends, colleagues and exponents of contemporary art on the Isle of Man. As well as being strong artists who produced astounding bodies of their own work, all three men contributed enormously to art and cultural development on the Isle of Man. All three were teachers in the art department at the IOM College and have left a huge legacy through their inspiration and education of younger Manx artists. Many of the artists working on the Island today were by one or all of the three men or indeed their successors such as Ian Coulson, who was himself taught by Norman Sayle. David Fletcher and Norman Sayle also served on the Isle of Man Arts Council and were both staunch proponents for the development of the visual arts on the Island so it is fitting that ‘3 Contemporaries’ is supported by the current Arts Council. Most of the works on show in this exhibition are kindly loaned by surviving widows or in David Gilbert’s case, trustees who look after the work following David’s death. Supported by the Isle of Man Arts Council. www.sayle.gallery | www.facebook.com/saylegallery

THE ROYAL AIR FORCE FLIES INTO THE ISLE OF MAN TO CELEBRATE ITS 100 YEARS ANNIVERSARY In conjunction with the 100th year anniversary of the Royal Air Force (RAF), the Isle of Man Post Office organised a meet and greet session attended by representatives of the Isle of Man RAF Air Cadets and Isle of Man RAF Association, as well as pilots from RAF Valley who have flown into Ronaldsway Airport, Isle of Man, in two RAF aircraft, Hawk T2, specifically for the event. During the meet and greet, guests were given the unique opportunity to get up close to the RAF aircraft as well as a Q&A session with the RAF pilots. His Excellency, Lieutenant Governor, Sir Richard Gozney graced the event with his presence and presented the RAF Valley pilots with a souvenir framed 100 Years of the RAF stamp collection. The Air Cadets were also given with a souvenir framed stamp set, presented by Ms. Edge. The 100 Years of the RAF stamp collection issued on 15th January 2018, is a commemorative set that has

an incredible depth of information in relation to the RAF history. The stamps feature images of iconic RAF aircraft, key airfields, personnel, medal ribbons, flags, the RAF Ensign, and a secret message in morse code which is visible under UV light. Once deciphered, the message reveals the well-known poem ‘High Flight’, by John Gillespie Magee, a Canadian Air Force pilot who trained at the RAF Cranwell, Lincolnshire. The RAF was formed towards the end of World War 1, on the 1st April 1918. Twenty years later RAF bases started to open on the Isle of Man, beginning with RAF Jurby in September 1939. RAF Andreas was opened two years later as a fighter airfield, while the civilian aerodrome at Ronaldsway was taken over by the RAF in 1940 and became RAF Ronaldsway. RAF Air-Sea Rescue marine craft were based at Ramsey, Peel, Douglas and Castletown during the war years. www.iompost.com/raf

THE ROYAL ENGAGEMENT CELEBRATED IN STAMPS
To celebrate the royal engagement of HRH Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle, the Isle of Man Post Office has commissioned a set of two stamps featuring the happy couple on the day they officially announced their engagement.
Fifth in line to the throne, Prince Harry has been dating Ms. Markle, known widely for her leading role in the US television drama Suits, since July 2016. Prince Harry asked Ms. Markle’s father’s permission to marry in the summer of 2017, and proposed in November 2017 at his Nottingham Cottage, Kensington Palace.
The royal wedding will take place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, just as the Earl of Wessex did in 1999. The Chapel is one of the most hallowed shrines of the British monarchy; within its walls great kings are buried, including Prince Harry’s great-great grandfather George V, his great grandparents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Her Majesty’s beloved parents. The stamp collection includes stamp sheet sets, First Day Cover, Presentation Pack and a Special Sheetlet, which are all available online at www.iompost.com/acelebration

PAINTING, WORDS AND PICTURES
SALTMOTHER Words By: Suzy Holland Images: Carola Colley, Beatrice Lacey, Usha Kishore, Paul Quayle
One of the real pleasures of writing about culture for Gallery is the opportunity to delve further into the work being exhibited around the Island. Saltmother (now on at the Hodgson Loom Gallery in Laxey) is one of those exhibitions – a collaboration between two artists (Carola Colley and Beatrice Lacey) and two poets (Usha Kishore and Paul Quayle) which is so different, so unusual, that it warrants that attention. Usha Kishore’s poem ‘Saltmother’ begins ‘I am she – cosmic soul, dark warrior, fecud earth, making love to the sky’ and it is this which not only gives the exhibition its title, but informs the whole body of work. Poems, haikus, drawings, photographs and paintings are all inspired by the myths and marks made on a landscape, both spiritual and physical, and it is impossible to talk about one artist’s work in this exhibition without referring to the others: they been working collaboratively and separately for many years and their actual and metaphorical journeys are all interwoven. Usha describes her recent collaborations with Carola as ‘ekphrastic’ which, for the
non-classics scholars reading this, comes from the Greek for ‘description’. A more detailed definition is ‘a description of a work of art, possibly imaginary, produced as a rhetorical exercise’. A perfect overview of the connections between the art, and artists, in Saltmother: poets Usha and Paul are artists in their use of words, Carola and Beatrice’s visual art is poetry. Carola and Usha’s work for Saltmother is a continuation of their 2016 UK exhibition ‘Threads across Waters’, and for this new exhibition Carola was inspired by Usha’s second poetry collection ‘Night Sky Between the Stars’, and her translation of
‘Translating the Divine Woman: Syamala Dandaka’ from the original Sanskrit: there is a shared fascination for myth in their poems and paintings. The collaboration between Carola and Beatrice was inspired by a road trip from Olhao to Bilbao following ancient roads, megalithic sites and the earliest known rock carvings in the Coa Valley. At its most literal, this work shows the connections between the human making the mark, the landscape and the subject, but it also weaves together the actual and the metaphorical - the spiritual essence of those connections – and Beatrice’s works offer a contrast between body and spirit and a reminder that all states of ‘being’ are transient. This same ‘weaving’ is apparent in Paul Quayle’s haikus. He too is influenced by historic sites and landscapes, and particularly by the work of wandering haiku masters who often incorporated pilgrimages into their poems. In his work for Saltmother Paul captures the juxtaposition of two images in what he describes as ‘a timeless moment of the universe’. If you are expecting to find a slavish devotion to numbers of syllables, or the strong seasonal element more usual in haikus you’ll be surprised but, I hope, not disappointed by Paul’s work: the haikus in Saltmother are not simple poetry but a representation of the Buddhist teaching of dharma – a cosmic law and order which informs everything. Two poets, two artists – and an infinite number of reasons why you should make your own pilgrimage to Laxey. Saltmother is a fascinating peek into the imaginations of four very intriguing people.
Saltmother is at the Hodgson Loom Gallery in Laxey until 21 April

BOOK REVIEW
WRITING FOR KIDS: ANYTHING BUT CHILD’S PLAY! Words: Suzy Holland Images: Tony Rea Photo of Illiam Jones (age 5) by Suzy Holland
With the Easter school holidays now upon us, I’ve been talking to local children’s author Tony Rea about his work and the dinosaur-like Mr Flubbergump, ‘star’ of three books aimed at 0-5s – or, more to the point, the people who read to, and with, their children. The first, I Call Him Mr Flubbergump, was published in 2013 and had what retailers like to call shelf-appeal – the bright cover image stood out even in the crowded picture book market and its success was such that Tony was encouraged to write two more adventures and, at Christmas 2017, introduced a soft toy. “The reaction to the first book was amazing,” says Tony, “and I realised then, I’d have to invent more stories for my hero. My background is as an artist and animator, so once I’ve had a ‘plot’ idea I start to illustrate the characters and the backgrounds, which are really a character in themselves. The words come later.” Writing for children is notoriously challenging and just because there are fewer pages in the finished book, many aspiring authors come to grief because they think it might be easy. “Children are very discerning, they can’t be tricked into liking something, they could be quite cruel,” laughs Tony, “and not only do the characters have to appeal visually, but the story, the words, have to flow. I spend a lot of time reading the final drafts aloud to myself to make sure there are no hiccups which destroy the rhythm. If an adult can’t read it, the child won’t follow it. That’s a recipe for instant boredom and the book will soon be abandoned.” But what makes Tony’s books succeed where many fail, and what makes Mr Flubbergump so special? What, or who, is he? Well, in short he’s a sort-of dinosaur, a fun character who gets into scrapes and has adventures. So far, so ordinary (in
38
children’s book terms). But Tony has made his character jump off the page leaving just enough to the imagination for the child to go off into their own flights of fancy. His background as an animator has informed the simplicity of the illustrations and Tony acknowledges the influence of his nieces and nephew who have been with Mr Flubbergump from the beginning. “Reading to and with your own family is one thing, but I was apprehensive when it came to the first book reading,” says Tony, who has accompanied each new book with visits to schools and nurseries. “All these small people who didn’t know why I was there, or what to expect, but now I really enjoy it. All the children have such great ideas and everyone always wants to know what else Mr Flubbergump is up to,” he continues, “and the book readings actually influenced the second and third of his adventures, when Mr Flubbergump went to space and under the sea.” He’s now working on more, but Tony was deliberately vague about the new book, or books. “I don’t want to box myself – or Mr
Flubbergump – into any corners by giving too much away,” he laughs. “I can say that there will be another adventure and there might be a new character introduced. I’m working on new drawings for that, and also developing a longer story for older children.” Tony’s love of story-telling and his enthusiasm for reading is at the root of all his work. “I grew up with Roald Dahl, and George’s Marvellous Medicine is still on my list of all-time favourite books,” says Tony, “and if my stories help to encourage a life-long love of books in today’s children, then I’ll be more than happy!” If you’d like your children, grandchildren, or your friends’ children to discover the magical world of Mr Flubbergump you can buy all three of Tony’s books – and a Mr Flubbergump plush toy – via the website (www.mrflubbergump.com), or you can avoid postage costs by popping into Bridge Bookshops in Ramsey and Port Erin, Waterstones in Douglas, Indulgence (Ramsey) and Timberland in Onchan (cash only). SIAM PARK - TENERIFE If you’d asked me a couple of years ago where the best Water Park in the world was, I’d probably have taken a guess at the over the top, no expense spared aquatic attractions of Orlando or Dubai.
If all this wasn’t enough already, Siam Park also boasts what is reportedly the largest Dragon Statue in the world. If that’s not worth a visit I really don’t know what is.

BEACH PARK - BRAZIL
2nd in the world, but top in Latin America, is Beach Park Brazil. Sitting right by the beach of Puerto das Dunas in the region of Fortaleza, almost a million visitors per year flock to the resort that this water wonderland is part of. 18 attractions over 35,000 square metres are designed to appeal primarily to families. Well designed, safe, and colourful areas such as Noah’s Ark, Aqua Circus and Treasure Island provide shallow pools, slides, waterfalls, jets and bucket dumps of up to 1800 litres at a time. Aquabismo and Tchibum slides offer low-key exhilaration for slightly bigger kids. Despite the family feel of this fun-packed park, thrill seekers are not completely forgotten. The monstrous Insano slide makes the Tower of Power look like a toddler slide, with a staggering 41 metre drop that at one time held the Guinness World Record for highest water slide. Riders accelerate to 105 kilometres per hour before plateauing towards the landing pool, where it’s advisable to check that the major internal organs are still in place.
WATERBOM - BALI Coming Third Worldwide and ranking #1 in Asia, Waterbom Bali is in the South Kuta area of the Island, and of the Top 3 parks offers the most appeal to daredevils, with the majority of rides falling into the ‘extreme’ category. In line with the more mature allure of this park, a number of the attractions seem to have been named in homage to low budget adult movies, with the rest giving a nod to the snakes which could (but probably don’t) lurk in the tropical surrounds. Climax, Double Twist and Smashdown 2.0 each feature a jaw-dropping, or indeed floor-dropping, trapdoor system that whips out from under the feet of those brave/foolhardy to have a go, pitching them into freefall at up to 2.5 G force, whilst the Constrictor is the world’s longest water slide, winding through the tree canopy for 250m. That’s about the same length as the tunnel, but is presumably an infinitely more pleasant experience to slither through. Fast & Fierce, Twin Racers and Green Vipers all allow riders to show off their competitive spirit, and each features two adjacent slides, with the latter twisting and tumbling around each other over a 20 metre descent. Meanwhile Boomerang (what goes up must come down) launches riders through a neon rainbow lit tunnel to build up speed for the near vertical quarter pipe. It’s not ALL white knuckle thrills at Waterbom however; more gentle exhilaration can be found on the Lazy River which meanders slowly through lush green Indonesian forest, or in the (ahem) Pleasure Pool where the swim-up bar offers cool cocktails, and bronzed sun lovers bask on the surrounding loungers.

Pension Freedom – What is it and what does it mean for you?
P
ension freedom first raised its head in the UK two years ago and was designed to allow pension holders the ability to access as much or as little of their accumulated pension fund as they wished, at any time. What has Changed? The Manx Budget introduced the Pension Freedom Scheme (“PFS”). This is a new pension scheme that permits the member some of the same freedoms as exists in the UK. The PFS has a more generous Tax-Free Cash allowance than existing IOM schemes, raising the level from 30% to 40% of value. The drawdown of the remainder of the pension fund is taxable at the member’s marginal rate. The PFS can be accessed from age 55 onwards and there is no requirement for a minimum income to be taken at age 75. The PFS also has no charge payable on death. So, what’s the Catch? There is a transfer charge of 10% of the fund prior to transfer to a PFS. It is only also possible to transfer into a PFS from a scheme that is approved under the current Isle of Man pensions legislation. Transfers from occupational defined benefit schemes are not permitted.
What does this Mean in Practice? It means a variety of things and as no two individuals are the same. We have run various scenarios and models and concluded that effective charging rates (ie combining the tax and the transfer charge) can range from 12% to nearly 21%.
Fund Remnant Rules have been raised to £100k. This is a very brief snapshot and summary of the changes and more detailed information can be found at: www.mitonoptimal.com/ iom/2018/03/08/pension-freedom/

Manx Telecom reveals first IOM areas for future-proof broadband
M
anx Telecom has announced the first two areas that can take advantage of the ultimate future-proof broadband service, provided via a fibre optic cable directly supplying each home or business. The new Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) service will provide a number of download speed options all the way up to 1 Gigabit per second, and the current plan is for it to be rolled-out to many more selected homes and businesses across the Island during this year. FTTP services will be delivered over Manx Telecom’s Wholesale network, and services are available from any of the Island’s internet service providers (ISPs). From March 12th, ISPs have been taking orders for FTTP broadband from customers in the Island’s main business district – Athol Street, Douglas, – and the residential area Reeyt Ny Sheear ( just off Johnny Watterson’s Lane, Douglas). By the end of this year Manx Telecom are aiming to have made direct fibre broadband available to approximately 4,600 residential and business premises on the Island. Approximately 13% of premises will have access to speeds up to 1Gbps.
Sure wins Isle of Man Government’s mobile business
S
ure has been chosen by the Isle of Man Government to provide its mobile services following a competitive tender process. The local telecoms company has migrated more than 6,000 government mobile services to the Sure network as part of the contract as well as delivering an online billing portal, full service management reporting suite and a Mobile Telecommunication Privileged Access Scheme (MTPAS) which offers priority access to the mobile network for key government personnel such as the emergency services. The news follows the recent announcement that independent telecommunication network experts Systemics have found Sure’s network to be the best overall and fastest in the Isle of Man. Sure’s 4G network was found to be the fastest for data downloads, its 4G+ coverage far more extensive – covering 75% of the island, and its network also delivered superior call quality and clarity. Mike Phillips, CEO of Sure in the Isle of Man, said that the award of the contract is a positive endorsement of the company’s network and is a result of its ongoing investment and expansion on the island. “The Isle of Man Government is the largest employer in the island and it is a great show of confidence in Sure, our mobile network and the expertise of our local team that we have won this significant piece of business,” said Mr Phillips.

agenda
“We’ve made substantial investments in our infrastructure over the last decade and as a result the quality and reliability of our mobile network are of a very high standard. This has been evidenced by our network recently being named the best overall and fastest mobile network in the Isle of Man by leading independent benchmarking solutions provider Systemics-PAB. This is a great achievement for our business and we are pleased that the Isle of Man Government has recognised the strengths of our mobile network and has chosen Sure to provide its mobile services. “It is vital for government professionals working in areas such as health, education and the emergency services to have access to a strong, consistent and fast mobile network which they can rely on so we’re proud that this responsibility has been entrusted to us. We will be working closely with the government to back its mobility plans and ensure its mobile communications are fully futureproof.” Richard Wild, Executive Director of Government Technology Services (GTS), commented: “Following on from this rigorous and detailed selection process, I’m looking forward to working with Sure, maintaining and developing the kind of mobile, interconnected service that we are all proud to support.” ON THE AGENDA

Words By: Michelle P. Tonnesen
ecessity is the mother of invention, they say. Most mothers want to be able to balance childcare and a career. Many stumble and fall in their attempts at having it all. They are not trying to be superwomen, but human beings who balance career aspirations and personal ambitions with the responsibilities of raising a family and setting a good example for their kids. However, with the rising cost of childcare in this part of the world some can’t afford to go back to work. Even for those who can afford childcare, mothers in part-time jobs are being hit by a pay penalty. A new study by the Institute for Fiscal Studies found that by the time a couple’s first child is aged 20, many mothers earn nearly a third less than the fathers. On top, they lose out on benefits, pensions and progression. And let’s face it, the part-time jobs don’t grow on trees either. Flexible workhours to allow for school runs often mean fitting a full time job into part time hours. Add to that an average dose of mummy guilt and you have a bitter woman cocktail waiting to explode. But how to juggle a fulfilling career with being there for your little ones? Enter the mumpreneurs! From creators of baby food, clothing and cupcakes to artists and economists; a wave of female entrepreneurs is on the rise, producing innovative products and businesses every month.

he idea started with a discussion whilst on holiday in Croatia with friends, we all struggled to find beautifully crafted, holiday-inspired sleepwear made from natural, breathable fabrics which are perfect for sleeping and lounging in. Thus the idea for Veronika Mikan sleepwear began. What have been your greatest obstacles on the way? How did you overcome them? Definitely communicating with foreign manufacturers as things quite literally get lost in translation. This is an ongoing issue, however it does get easier the more familiar I become with the processes, rules and regulations. Keeping informed with an open channel of communication is key.
I
Kat Mills, Transformational Health Coaching
MUMPRENEURS
am a Transformational Health Coach. I work with entrepreneurial women who are exhausted or feel stuck in life with no time for themselves. By coaching using Laser Coaching Methods, I transform their energy and awaken them to powerful possibilities ahead without it being a challenge. I started training to become a coach as I felt stuck in my life. I had been a passionate children’s nurse for 21 years, but knew my natural passion lay in helping people believe in their true potential. I had a mission in my heart that was screaming to come out: to help women show up for themselves like they never had before. When I started showing up for myself I was able to move forward in life without fear or holding on to social conditioning. What have been your greatest obstacles on the way? Believing in myself – it meant challenging my own limiting beliefs and values. Believing that I am capable of setting up my own business. Believing I am able to balance my family, relationship and work, and have fun in the process.
What have been your greatest successes? I’m launching my first collection this summer, so thus far it would have to be a successful first photo shoot. I was thrilled with the results! What do you love the most about being a mumpreneur? The best thing is being flexible with my schedule. It makes life much easier being able to dictate my own working hours which enables me to still be a hands-on mum. Your best advice to other women? If your work is creative, involve your children in the process. It’s great for them to feel involved and children’s ideas are often original and unadulterated. www.veronikamikan.co.uk
What have been your greatest successes? Taking the leap from a job that was intuitive and moulded in my life to opening up the opportunity I have now. Having children and keeping my children alive so far! Travelling around the world. Never stopping on my journey of self-growth. Being able to continually reflect on my relationships by checking myself first before projecting my feelings. What do you love the most about being a mumpreneur? I can show my two beautiful little girls that being true to you is okay and never to be scared. Simply to be able to pick them up from school, cook together and sit and have meals is awesome. I can set up my coaching schedule around my life. To not miss out on family time and to be in control of my time and business is great. Your best advice to other women? Listen to your heart. Sometimes we have spent so much time doing things for others, we forget what it was we wanted. To find our purpose is sometimes hard. I suggest getting a Life/Health Coach to start you on your way. A great coach will help you uncover what is stopping you and how to move forward on your life’s journey. https://katherinemills333.wixsite.com/ website

Susanne Ekdahl, SEE Design Jewellery
W
hen I moved abroad with my husband and two small kids, I had to give up my business in Sweden where I helped small businesses with accounting. With no social or family network, I became a stay-at-home mum.
I went to a bead jewellery making class and fell in love with it. I got very obsessed and went to bed thinking of my next project. 10 years ago we moved to the Isle of Man where I signed up for a 10-week silver jewellery course and I have returned every year since. With a big variety of jewellery and more and more people asking for my pieces, I decided to start my own business of designing, making and selling my creations. What have been your greatest obstacles on the way? Time. I work from home and have all the house chores around me. I have to go to all the school meetings, trips and stay home when the kids are ill. It’s like having two jobs. There was also a lot of paperwork and tasks to start up the business. To get a bank account on the island for a small start-up business was almost impossible. And without a bank account there were a lot of other things that couldn’t go ahead. At some points, I almost gave up as I felt everything came to a halt. After nine months, I finally got my bank account and I have learnt that so many in my situation have had the same problem. Having your own business doesn’t only come with the things you want to do – in my case designing and making jewellery. I also have to source my own materials, take photos of my pieces, do the marketing, pricing, accounting, selling, packaging and posting. I often have to dig deep to find the confidence to promote my work. I joined The Creative Network – a group of artists and creative people on the island who support and promote each other. They have meant a lot to me.

ours truly wanted a way to be able to find time for writing, as well as implementing my management consulting skills, plus juggle it all with school holidays and being there for the kids. Thus, I ventured into self-employment in 2012 and haven’t looked back since. By contracting for major companies on the island, it allowed me to manage my schedule independently, freeing up time to write articles for this wonderful magazine and two novels to boot. What have been your greatest obstacles on the way? With no family on the island and a husband who travels for work a lot, I am the one who has to be there for the kids if they’re sick or have events at school. If you have a conflicting client meeting scheduled, it’s frustrating to have to compromise your professional pride. I have been fortunate to have understanding clients and good friends who step up to lend a helping hand.
What have been your greatest successes? What puts a smile on my face is knowing that my jewellery is sold and worn all around the world: Europe, Scandinavia, USA, Canada, Israel, South Africa, Australia, and the Caribbean! What do you love the most about being a mumpreneur? I get to be home with my kids. Even if I’m not doing things with them all the time, I’m still there if they need me. I think they feel and will remember me being around. I can also work when it suits me and the family. I can always pop in to my studio in the evening or at weekends if I need to. But that is also the downside; I can never really let go. Your best advice to other women? If you think of starting your own business, be prepared to work hard. Try to get some people around you that can help out with the kids and maybe help you clean your house. Otherwise you might get overworked. If you work from home, it’s important that people respect and understand that you are running a business and can’t take part in everything. Just because you are at home doesn’t mean you don’t work. It’s never too late to start your own thing. If you believe in and love doing something, go for it. Just be prepared that it’s not always easy to get a balance between being a mum and running your own business. www.see-design.net
What have been your greatest successes? Being part of every step in my children’s development to becoming happy, thriving human beings, whilst writing and publishing two novels which bring joy to readers around the world, and helping my clients manage their organisations successfully. What do you love the most about being a mumpreneur? Definitely the flexibility of being able to balance my professional ambitions with my personal responsibilities. Your best advice to other women? Go for it! Don’t go into your grave wishing you had written that book or built that business. But be prepared to walk the tightrope of managing the expectations of yourself, your clients and your family, and face the inevitable compromises you have to make along the way. www.mptonnesen.com, http://mimo.co.im ON THE AGENDA

Warning!
Is your portfolio a ticking time bomb? As an independent Discretionary Fund Manager (DFM), MitonOptimal has been caring for private client portfolios for the best part of two decades. It is evident to us that the old ways of doing business are changing, both globally and locally, and without exception. In fact, traditional institutions that have relied upon clients having blind faith in their abilities and have been given carte blanche to operate ‘behind closed doors’ are no longer acceptable in an increasingly regulated, fee sensitive and transparent environment. We understand that busy and successful clients do not have time or the inclination to monitor markets or corporate activity on a daily basis, however, these events can and do have a direct impact on the security, liquidity and performance of your portfolio. Many clients may have lingering doubts at the back of their minds, however, they tend to categorise the management of their capital as important but non-urgent.
When was the last time you sat down and reviewed your portfolio properly? At MitonOptimal we offer an investment review service that provides a ‘health-check’ of your assets giving a clear and precise report on the condition of your portfolio.
Past decisions and inertia may have an adverse impact on portfolios For private clients, ensuring that assets and strategies stay aligned with your investment objectives should be a straightforward process. However, a client’s personal preferences, a good sales pitch from a product provider, or the search for growth or income can lead to decisions that potentially shift the dynamics of a client portfolio away from your risk profile and original objectives. From our own experience, when conducting initial portfolio reviews for clients (a major part of our DFM service offering), we are seeing an increasing number of portfolios that either no longer matches the original investment mandate or have had the same asset allocation since inception, sometimes going back over ten years. There can be a number of possible reasons for this, especially when there is a lack of continuity in the personnel managing a client portfolio, in some instances, you may find you have no appointed manager (in the industry you would be classified as an ‘orphan client’) or that your account has been inherited by a junior relationship officer with little or no knowledge of your personal circumstances and limited investment decision making ability.
54
agenda
ON THE AGENDA
However, these substantial challenges also offer an opportunity for clients to reassess their investments and to seek a better, faster and smarter portfolio management solution. Deciding to have a portfolio review gives you the knowledge and ability to re-establish a suitable risk profile and asset allocation strategy that’s suitable and appropriate for your current circumstance and future plans. Our clients benefit from the full range of research and analysis tools, skills and investment knowledge of the MitonOptimal Group. As portfolio managers, we will take on the day-to-day responsibility for the investment decision-making process, enabling clients to de-risk their portfolios and alleviate those nagging uncertainties (tick, tick, tick....Boom).
As your investment manager, their primary focus should be on asset allocation and portfolio management. Importantly they should also be willing and able to divulge details of the underlying investments that comprise your portfolio and their associated costs. Over the last few years, we have seen a ground swell of clients seeking to engage an independent owner managed business to look after their portfolios, as a private client, you should know who is looking after your capital and how they are managing it. At MitonOptimal we are committed to providing sensible long-term solutions that are easily understood, fairly priced and transparent. As a first step, deciding to get a health-check on your portfolio is, in our view, a simple and important way in which to avoid that ticking time bomb.
Your investment manager must understand your circumstances and build a meaningful relationship Your manager must have experience in tailoring portfolio solutions to suit a broad range of client-specific circumstances and investment objectives. They should understand that wealth preservation and generating risk-adjusted returns above inflation are key to securing the financial future of their clients and that income generation and careful stewardship of capital enables a client to maintain the quality of life to which they have become accustomed.

How the tech industry is attracting more women Removing macho jargon from job ads is one of the strategies that is producing results
Words By: Jane Bird (FT)
“S
eeking outstanding individuals with a passion for missioncritical technology to help on our aggressive journey to improve our premier network and create synergy.” Until recently, this male-orientated wording was how Vodafone would advertise for a cloud service operations engineer. Now, the telecoms company scans every job posting to check for and correct gender bias in order to encourage women to apply for the job. The same ad would currently read more like: “Seeking extraordinary individuals with a real passion for critical technology to help on our bold journey to improve our top-tier network and help create alignment.” Rephrasing job ads increased the number of women Vodafone recruited by 7 per cent during a three-month trial last year. It is one of several strategies tech companies are adopting to boost their appeal to women. In the US, females comprised only a quarter of the tech workforce in 2015, while in the UK the proportion was just 17 per cent. Some tech companies are attempting to correct the imbalance with measures such as training staff in unconscious bias awareness, deleting gender from CVs, insisting that shortlists include women, improving referral incentives, introducing retraining programmes for returners, enhancing maternity rights and showcasing female role models on social media. Changing job adverts is a small but effective part of the push to change the industry’s gender balance. Vodafone job descriptions had a lot of jargon, abbreviations and macho language, says Catalina Schveninger, the company’s global head of resourcing and employer brand. In the pilot, words such as “win”, “kick”, “aggressive”, “premier” and “outstanding” were replaced with “bold”, “improve”, “top-tier” and “extraordinary”.

The company was so pleased with the trial that job post screening for gender bias is being implemented across the UK, the US, India and several other English-speaking countries. Vodafone is even removing the phrase “competitive salary” from its job posts. “We thought this phrase would attract a lot of candidates,” Ms Schveninger says. “But apparently it is putting women off. They don’t care whether they’re making more money than others — they just want to be treated fairly.” Debbie Forster, chief executive of Tech Talent Charter — a UK initiative whose signatories promote the employment of women — agrees male-orientated job descriptions deter women. They often ask for “ninjas” and “techies”, she says. “Not a lot of women I know would describe themselves as a ‘ninja’. They get the impression that they would just be walking into a boys’ club.” To help screen its advertisements, Vodafone uses software from Washingtonbased Textio, which analyses 10m job posts and outcomes every month to spot patterns and identify trends. Kieran Snyder, Textio’s chief executive, says ads for people to “manage” teams typically appeal more to men. “If you ask for someone to ‘develop’ a team you tend to attract a higher proportion of women. Asking for someone to ‘lead’ a team attracts a mix of men and women.” Advertising for people who are “high -powered”, “experts”, “results-driven” or “action-oriented” is also more likely to yield men, says Ms Forster. “Even very highly qualified women are less likely to think of themselves in this way. “If a man thinks he has half of the requirement in a job description he’ll go for it. But women typically won’t apply if they can’t fulfil 90 per cent-plus of the job description. It’s a confidence issue.” Women are particularly resistant to jargon, says Ms Snyder, even widely used business words such as “synergy” or “stakeholder”. “These phrases reflect a male corporate culture,” she says. Nor do women like bullet lists. “If more than half the job post is bullets, you start seeing a rapid decline in the proportion of women applying for the role.” However, George Brasher, managing director of HP UK and Ireland, says rewording job descriptions is not enough. “We need to attract at least 50 per cent females to stay innovative.”
In the US less than half of the women with college computer degrees go on to work in computing jobs

The IT group is rolling out a global programme to make managers involved in hiring aware of unconscious bias. It highlights how their decisions may be based on factors such as whether female applicants are wearing make-up and perfume, have grey hair, how they are dressed or whether they are wearing a wedding ring. The aim is to make interviewers understand how they view and respond to candidates, says Mr Brasher. “By raising awareness, we hope they will make different and better decisions to ensure we are hiring the best people.” The training was piloted in the US and Europe and generated strong positive feedback from participants. Vodafone is asking its interviewers to focus more on facts, skills and quantifiable data than what they feel or believe about a candidate. “By forcing the panels to be more structured we are limiting the bias,” says Ms Schveninger. Other measures tech companies are adopting include improved maternity leave, appointing more women to senior roles and using social media to publicise these, as well as trying to attract women who have been on career breaks. They are also “blinding” CVs, so that recruiters do not know the name and sex of applicants. Vodafone is testing the idea of requiring
shortlists to include at least two women, especially for senior roles. “In the past, we specified one woman per shortlist, but research shows this actually puts the woman in a tougher position and she tends to get edged out by the men,” says Ms Schveninger. “With two women, the chances that one of them gets the job improve by 50 per cent.” Vodafone’s goal is to increase the global representation of women in management and leadership roles worldwide to 30 per cent by 2020 — up from 28 per cent in March 2017. The group has also doubled its rewards for staff who introduce female employees. HP’s board, at 40 per cent female, is the most diverse among US tech companies, while women represent 37 per cent of the company’s global workforce. In the UK more than half of HP’s interns are women — a ratio it says it will maintain. HP has also told its lawyers, advertising and public relations agencies to meet staff diversity requirements or face penalties. SAS, an analytics company, encourages female staff to visit local schools, communities and businesses to urge girls to choose careers in science and technology. Some 600 of the company’s 14,000 staff globally have signed up. ON THE AGENDA

Recipes MAKE NADIA SAWALHA AND KAYE ADAMS’ PRETEND PAELLA FOR A QUICK SUPPER, THIS CHEAT’S DISH IS IDEAL.
Ingredients: (Serves 4) n 2-3tbsp olive oil n 2 onions, sliced n 3 medium tomatoes, cut into 8 n 3-6 garlic cloves, finely chopped n 300g basmati rice n Pinch of saffron threads n 1 heaped tsp smoked paprika (optional) n 150ml dry sherry or white wine n 400ml hot fish stock (from a cube is fine) n 400g pack of frozen seafood mix n 100g frozen peas n Lemon wedges, to serve n Handful of chopped parsley leaves, to serve Method: 1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onions and garlic and cook for two to three minutes, stirring, until softened. Add the tomatoes and stir. 2. Add the rice, saffron and paprika (if using), and stir for one minute. 3. Pour in the sherry or wine. Increase the heat to bring up to the bubble for one minute, stirring to burn off the alcohol, then reduce the heat to medium. 4. Add the stock and seafood mix, cover, and simmer very gently for 15 minutes over a low heat, or until the rice and fish are cooked. Add the peas three minutes before the end. Don’t stir. 5. When the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed, you’re ready to go, with a good squeeze from the lemon wedges, and a flourish of chopped parsley. Tip: Feel free to add chunks of fried chorizo, if you eat meat.

HOW TO MAKE NADIA SAWALHA AND KAYE ADAMS’ PEA AND BACON SOUP SERVE THIS ZINGY SOUP WITH CRUSTY BREAD.
Ingredients: (Serves 4) n 30g unsalted butter n 4 spring onions, chopped n 500g frozen petits pois n 500ml vegetable stock, plus extra if needed n 1tbsp lemon juice, or to taste n Pinch of sugar, or to taste n Salt and freshly ground white pepper n 6 rashers of smoked streaky bacon (optional) Method: 1. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over a low heat. Add the spring onions and cook until softened but not coloured. 2. Tip in the petits pois and stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about five minutes, or until the peas are tender.
3. Using a blender or a hand-held blender, whizz until smooth (only half-fill the blender and be careful, as hot soup scalds). Add more stock if you’d like a thinner soup. 4. Stir in the lemon juice, sugar, salt and pepper, then taste and adjust all these seasonings to taste. 5. Grill the bacon (if using) until nice and crisp. You can do this ahead of time and keep it on a piece of kitchen paper, so it stays crisp. 6. Ladle the soup into four warmed bowls and crumble over the crispy bacon. JUST A
splash !
WHEN A WINE IS LABELLED BY THE GRAPE VARIETY, YOU WOULD EXPECT IT TO CONTAIN 100% OF THAT GRAPE. EUROPEAN WINE LAW ALLOWS WINEMAKERS TO LABEL WINE BY GRAPE VARIETY IF IT CONTAINS A MINIMUM OF 85% OF THAT VARIETY. THIS GIVES THEM THE FREEDOM TO ADD A SPLASH OF ANYTHING ELSE THEY WISH INTO THE BOTTLE. 2017 was a particularly difficult vintage in Europe with frost, hail and heat damaging vines. The drop in worldwide production is equivalent to 2.9 billion bottles of wine less than in an average year. One effect of this is to push up the price per kg of grapes. In some regions, the fruit that survived was very healthy and the potential is for excellent quality wine, albeit in small quantities. The 15% regulation works in two ways: It can help a supermarket achieve a certain price point. The price of inexpensive Pinot Grigio is likely to increase by up to 30% during 2018 but by adding 15% of cheaper grapes into the wine, it can still be labelled as Pinot Grigio and the price increase will be less marked. It may not taste quite the same but it helps keep the wine at the right price on the shelf. On the other hand, a splash of something else can add complexity to a wine and a good winemaker loves the challenge of using the grapes available to make a more interesting wine.
Words By | Anne Berry | The Wine Cellar
From Spain, the Borsao Seleccion Tinto is labelled as and contains 85% Garnacha, which gives its full bodied character, acidity and structure. This vintage includes 10% Syrah and 5% Tempranillo. The Syrah adds depth of colour and richness of fruit character on the palate while the Tempranillo adds tannin and savoury flavours. A wine to enjoy either on its own or pair it with chorizo, cheese or roasted vegetable platters. Great value at £9.25. Caliterra Carmenere Reserva (£10.95) from Chile is 85% Carmenere with 15% Petit Verdot. Petit Verdot makes a bold wine and adds body, tannin and structure as well as some floral aromas to the red berry character of the Carmenere. Petit Verdot is rarely produced as a single varietal wine, but is perfect for increasing complexity. Wines from Carmenere are well suited to food, especially lamb and spicy foods. Caliterra Carmenere is suitable for vegans and definitely worth trying with a curry.
Cartlidge and Brown Chardonnay (£15.25) from California contains 96% Chardonnay. Chardonnay has relatively low acidity and the remaining 4% is Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, which provide aromatic qualities and a zip of acidity to give a freshness on the palate. A versatile wine, it works well with fish with a lemon butter sauce, roast chicken or try it with a creamy pasta dish. The Spanish Godello from Capricho Val de Paxariñas in the fashionable north west region of Bierzo (£15.45) is blended with 15% old vine Dona Blanca. Two indigenous varieties aged on the lees, giving a wonderfully complex dry white wine that is perfect with seafood, chicken and vegan dishes.

BEAUTY
GLITTER, GLOSS AND GREEN EYESHADOW
THESE ARE THE 6 BIGGEST BEAUTY TRENDS FOR SPRING Ready to hit refresh on your beauty look now that spring has (very nearly) sprung? Then you’ve come to the right place. The SS18 catwalks gave us a glut of gorgeous hair and make-up ideas, and there’s something to suit every taste. Bored of matte lips? Get ready for gloss, 2018-style. Eyeliner addict? You’ll adore the graphic black liner looks. Love a bit of sparkle? Rhinestones are back with a vengeance. Suffice it to say, there’s a lot to get excited about - and we’ve got the inside scoop on how to recreate these runway looks at home.
1. Punky glitter
Eyes, lips, lashes, nails - there was barely a body part that wasn’t dusted with sparkling particle at the spring shows, from stickon rhinestones at Jeremy Scott, to glitterencrusted eyelashes at Ryan Lo. But these looks all shared a rebellious edge - it’s about punk not precision - so load up on black kohl liner and top with a fingertip full of loose glitter to get the requisite toocool-to-care vibe. MAC 3D LAVENDER GLITTER, £16.50
2. Exaggerated eyeliner
Winged liner has been popular on the catwalks for a few seasons (and with good reason), but now the delicate cat-eye flick takes a backseat in favour of super-bold styles. The most conceptual example was at Lanvin, where a drinking straw was used to stamp dashes of liner out from the corner of the eye - which, honestly, seems like a lot of effort - but the mega-wings at Versus Versace and Marc Jacobs just require a steady had and a bit of practice. CHARLOTTE TILBURY THE FELINE FLICK LIQUID EYE PEN IN PANTHER, £22
shows like Chanel and Tom Ford. Blood red and fuchsia were particularly popular, but this is a trend that’s easily adaptable - a slick of clear gloss over your favourite lippie, and you’ve got it. GIVENCHY GLOSS INTERDIT VINYL ROUGE THRILLER, £23.50, ESCENTUAL
4. Aqua eyes
From inky blue at Givenchy Couture to bright azure at House of Holland, and chalky turquoise at Missoni, aqua eyeshadows popped up at plenty of shows. There wasn’t a lot of subtlety to many of these catwalk designs, but if you choose a shade of blue or green that complements your eye colour, and smoke it out at the edges, this can be a really flattering look. BARRY M KINGFISHER BLUE KOHL PENCIL, £2.99
5. Tea-stained eyes
If it’s subtlety you’re after, then take your cue from the shows where the make-up was as delicate at the clothes, namely Preen and Alexis Mabille. Here, a wash of creamy tea-brown across the eyelids complemented perfect skin and nude lips. It’s important to note that this is a cool brown rather than a warm terracotta - a foundation stick that’s a few shades darker than your skin will give the ideal texture and tone. HOURGLASS VANISH SEAMLESS FINISH FOUNDATION STICK, £42, SPACE NK
6. Hair accessories
Hair adornments have been creeping onto the catwalks in recent seasons, but for SS18 they’ve gone global, with the likes of Gucci, Miu Miu, and Versace getting involved, while at Dries van Noten, crystals were used to line models’ partings. Designer hair clips will set you back upwards of £100 a pop, but there are lots of inexpensive dupes on the high street, so you can experiment with the hair jewellery trend risk-free. ACCESSORIZE PEARL CLUSTER
3. Lip gloss
Fashion is nothing if not fickle, so it was only a matter of time before matte lips were usurped on the catwalks. And, sure enough, wet-look lips ruled at trendsetting SS18

ACTIVE NEWS CHIP ‘N’ BIB SYSTEM MAKES TIMING EASIER AT MANX TELECOM PARISH WALK A new timing system will make everyone that little bit faster at this year’s Manx Telecom Parish Walk. In recent years competitors have carried an electronic ‘dongle’ which they ‘dibbed’ at timing system sensors located at each checkpoint – and sometimes this caused delays if lots of walkers turned up at checkpoints at the same time. This year, thanks to event sponsors Manx Telecom, that system is being replaced and walkers will now have a timing chip incorporated into their race number bib. Their time will
be automatically registered when they walk over timing mats at each checkpoint – which will save all the walkers vital seconds, and possibly allow them to achieve a new personal best time, or even break Parish Walk records! As always, on race day friends and relatives of walkers will be able to monitor their progress online with times being posted as soon as each competitor reaches a checkpoint.
There’s still time for teams and individuals to enter this year’s Parish Walk – the final deadline for entries is May 6th. www.parishwalk.com

Pip comes to the Isle of Man having shot to fame as the cult character ‘Lead Stormtrooper’ in the blockbuster Star Wars series! Cyclefest will have its fair share of hungry cyclists wisely refueling for the challenges ahead, but it also provides an unbeatable choice of treats and eats for everyone else - whether seeking out delicious healthy options or something altogether more naughty! best performing model overall for January 2018. The Vauxhall Corsa was also the fifth bestselling new car in the UK in 2017 with 52,772 sales, but that achievement pales in comparison to 2016, when it won second place with 77,110 examples sold. The Corsa was first introduced to the UK market in 1993 and is celebrating its 25th birthday this year. To celebrate, Vauxhall is offering one year’s free insurance and five year’s zero per cent flexible finance with not minimum deposit to new buyers of Energy and Limited Edition models aged 21-75.

BENTLEY HAS REVEALED A PLUG-IN HYBRID VERSION OF THE BENTAYGA SUV
The luxurious Bentley Bentayga SUV is now available as a plug-in hybrid, making it the least-polluting vehicle the brand has ever made. Marketed by the British brand as its “first step towards full electrification”, the upmarket SUV is being offered with a 3.0-litre petrol V6 engine and electric motor that result in CO2 emissions of just 75g/km. Hybrid-specific changes include a revised infotainment system that can relay important information on performance, consumption and battery levels to the driver, while the traditional instrument panel has been replaced with a dial that shows when the Bentayga is in pure-electric mode, displays charge being regenerated when slowing down, or engine revs when the V6 is engaged. Bentley says the vehicle uses information from the satellite navigation system to decide when to use EV mode or the engine. For example, it will deliberately hold back use of the electric motors to keep the battery full ahead of entering a city, and will deploy more battery at the end of a journey rather than hold charge unnecessarily. The charge point can be plugged into a domestic power supply or public charging point and is estimated to take 7.5 hours and 2.5 hours respectively to fully charge a depleted battery. The electric-only range is claimed to be 31 miles. Bentley is remaining vague on pricing and availability, but says the Bentayga Hybrid “will become available to order in selected markets from the second half of 2018”.
ALPINA REVEALS HIGH-PERFORMANCE XD3 SUV Based on BMW’s X3, Alpina has added its trademark mechanical and visual upgrades to bring a fresh offering in the performance SUV market. Powering it is a reworked version of BMW’s 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine, here delivering 328bhp and 700Nm of torque. It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and is capable of taking the XD3 from 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds before hitting a top speed of 158mph. The engine isn’t the only part to receive mechanical fettling, though. Power is sent to all four wheels through an Alpina-developed torque distribution system, which the manufacturer says “guarantees maximum traction, neutral driving dynamics and high levels of safety”, while the addition of a rear limited-slip differential and sports suspension aids cornering stability.
As for the look of the XD3, Alpina has added a distinctive body kit and 20-inch alloy wheels to the SUV to further distinguish it as one of its creations. Full details of equipment on the Alpina XD3, along with pricing and delivery dates, will be revealed later this year.
HYDROGEN-POWERED HYUNDAI NEXO Hyundai has announced that its Nexo hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) will have a range of 500 miles.
This means its next hydrogen vehicle will be capable of driving from Birmingham to Dusseldorf in one charge. The Nexo will have an efficiency rating of 60%, making it 30% more efficient than an average internal combustion engine. In addition, Hyundai claims the battery technology in the car will be so advanced that the SUV will be capable of enduring 100,000 miles of motoring at 30 degrees below freezing. The Nexo will go on sale at the end of 2018.

Much to the annoyance of sports car purists, Jaguar’s fitted a four-cylinder engine to its F-Type. Jack Evans finds out whether it’s worthy of a place in the line-up. Words By: Jack Evans
What is it? Here’s a Jaguar F-Type - but not quite as you’d know it. Rather than a raucous V8 or V6 under the long, sculpted bonnet, there’s a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol. While that may not sound like enough engine for a red-blooded convertible, Jaguar claims that it’s got what it takes to instil the F-Type with proper performance. This is the convertible version too, meaning drop-top thrills and wind-in-your-hair experiences with slightly better economy figures than you’d find with the more highpowered F-Type models. There’s still a lot of kit fitted as standard, though this model has a range of options - but we’ll delve into these a little later. What’s new? The biggest change is the engine - however, this latest-generation F-Type does benefit from a variety of tweaks and updates. LED headlights now feature all round, while the infotainment system uses the latest Jaguar set-up. The bumpers have been redesigned for a more dynamic look, while standard lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels are said to help ‘reduce unsprung mass’ - though our test car came with larger, optional 19-inch five-spoke versions. Inside, a range of aluminium finishers have been used to help lift the cabin - and this is needed, as it can sometimes feel like a particularly dark cockpit. What’s under the bonnet? The F-Type’s 2.0-litre, four-cylinder ‘Ingenium’ petrol engine is surprisingly powerful and, according to Jaguar, offers the ‘highest specific power output of any engine in the F-Type range’ with 148bhpper-litre. Overall, it produces 296bhp and 400Nm of torque, sending this power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Acceleration takes a claimed 5.4 seconds, while the F-Type’s top speed sits at a respectable 155mph. Of course, one of the main premises behind fitting a smaller capacity engine is better economy, and in that sense the four-cylinder delivers. Jaguar claims it’ll return 39.2mpg on the combined cycle, while emitting just 163g/km CO2. For context, a Golf GTI produces 139g/km CO2 - despite being far lighter than the Jaguar.
engine in the place of a much larger V6 or V8 is a substantial reduction in weight. Jaguar says the F-Type four-cylinder has shed 52kg compared to the base V6, and this makes the driving experience substantially different. In addition, Jaguar engineers have uniquely calibrated the steering and chassis to better exploit that lower overall weight. But what does this mean? Well, the F-Type four-cylinder turns just a little sharper than the regular car, while the front end feels noticeably lighter. This makes it more agile overall, and feels just a little less unwieldly than the largerengined cars. Performance is more than adequate for a sports car of this nature, while the note the engine produces may not be conventional, but to our ears it sounds interesting enough. How does it look? The F-Type has always been an impressively pretty design, with styling cues harking back to past Jaguar models. Though somewhat updated for 2018, the four-cylinder is just as good to look at, with cuts and grooves in all the right places. Though the design has been in the public eye since 2011, it’s still fresh and turns heads wherever you go. The fourcylinder car is fitted with a single central outlet exhaust, rather than the V6’s dual central outlet or the V8’s quad tail pipes. It actually suits the design of the car well, and doesn’t spoil the rear of the F-Type whatsoever. What’s it like inside? The Jaguar F-Type’s interior has always been a mix of the high and low-end materials, and the four-cylinder’s just the same. There are some harsher plastics
in some areas, though the overall effect is good. The new aluminium trim pieces do help lift the overall look of the cabin, as the black leather of our test car, when combined with the dark folding roof, do work to create quite a dark cabin. The driver’s seat has plenty of adjustment, and the same can be said for the steering wheel - meaning it’s not hard to get into a spot-on driving position. Those seats are hugely comfortable too, and provide plenty of lateral support. Our test car’s seats were also heated - a welcome feature. What’s the spec like? Our test car was dressed in R-Dynamic spec, and these cars start at £59,085. However, it is accompanied by a lot of standard equipment, including full LED headlights, six-way electrically adjustable seats and a switchable active sports exhaust - the latter transforming the character of the engine. You also get automatic rain sensing wipers, and an eight-inch colour touchscreen. The infotainment system operates well enough, though the icons look a little outdated and could benefit from an update - the touchscreen is accurate and responsive, however. Our test car came in at a hefty £67,320, with that price is the result of the inclusion of 19-inch alloy wheels, red brake callipers and larger front and rear brakes - a £2,290 option. Verdict The F-Type four-cylinder makes a lot of sense on many levels. It’s cheaper to run, and therefore eliminates a certain amount of worry about fuel costs. It’s also sharp to drive and - to us at least - sounds special enough. Yes, the engine may not have the level of drama that comes with the largercapacity units in the range, but it’s still a very impressive package - and one that most enthusiastic drivers would be pleased to get behind the wheel of. It’s a real showcase of how downsizing doesn’t have to mean diminished levels of fun.
