elcome weary traveller to your latest destination: the wanderlust edition of Gallery magazine. Inside you’ll find all manner of interesting adventures to, and beyond, the horizons of local life.

We have fashion reviews, travel photography, fly direct holidays 2013, featured exhibitions, a paparazzi competition and so much more. So step forth into this barely mapped literary continent of cultural delights and explore. But, before you embark on your journey, we should make sure you’re adequately prepared. And what better way to prepare for the wanderlust edition than with an examination of that feeling. The word wanderlust comes from the German wandern (to hike) and lust (desire), and roughly translated means an enjoyment of ‘strolling, roaming about or wandering’ according to Wikipedia. It entered into the English language in 1902, a reflection of the journeyman (apprenticeship) tradition of German Romanticism. However, when we think of wanderlust today, we only occasionally think of young, lederhosen clad, workmen strolling from hill to hill. Instead it denotes a kind of passion, a desire for the new, both geographically and culturally. When we speak of someone consumed by wanderlust, we picture seasoned travellers addicted to the thrill of finding a new home, however temporarily. So, with that cleared up we assume you know what you’re getting yourself into. Without further ado, pick up your rucksack and tie back your dreadlocks, it’s time to set off on the long road to next month. And remember, the journey is every bit as important as the destination. MR AND MRS RICHARDSON’S WEDDING DAY WAS LIKE WATCHING A FAIRY TALE UNFOLD. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF CAPTURING THE HAPPINESS OF THEIR UNFORGETTABLE DAY ON CAMERA.

Think on this... less than 10% of the world’s land is more than 48 hours from the nearest city...

he urge to hot-foot it to somewhere other than where you started is nothing new. The oldest tales in history or even religious faux-history all seem to centre around travel. Likewise many treasures, songs and works of art all seem to have that much more gravitas if they come from somewhere far, far away. Mass exoduses, diasporas and wanderings are the the stuff of stories from the bible to beowulf, from The Grapes of Wrath to Gulliver’s...well, Travels. It stands to reason that this would inspire adventurous or entrepreneurial young minds to seek out the furthest flung corners of the world, but the presence of strangers in strange lands tends to bring a whole set of new woes to the lands in question. It’s not long before ‘alien’ diseases and invasive hitch-hiker animal species - rats being the classic example - start to come along for the ride, themselves afflicted with a wanderlust and possessing a dangerousto-the-environment adaptability much like our own. Inevitably, before long what seemed like a paradise is just another tourist spot, or worse - somewhere to exploit and sometimes literally ‘strip-mine’ for resources. Paradoxically, when somewhere is prized for its natural beauty, it tends to get overrun by visitors and loaded up with commercial businesses. As the truly natural spots get progressively rarer, more people visit them... And so the cycle continues. Think on this... Less than 10% of the world’s land is more than 48 hours from the nearest city. Honestly, and we’re talking land travel only. Trains, cars or donkeys. Scary huh? No

matter where you go, civilisation is only two days away. Given the above information, it means that ‘remote’ is becoming a thing of the past, and critically, we are only probably a couple of days away from screwing up any remaining pristine natural areas. The Amazon Rainforest is pretty well connected - rivers help - and most deserts have a road network these days.

It happens to be surrounded by massive mountain ranges, and the only ‘rain’ is hailstones, but there are some redeeming features. The Tibetan Plateau contains the world’s third-largest store of ice, after the polar regions. Perfect for that sneaky pear cider... If climate change doesn’t thoughtfully create a giant rooftop swimming pool before you get there!

All this leads me to wondering, what next? Technology is leaping ahead of where most of us could have ever imagined, so, just where will the age-old and inherent human ‘wanderlust’ and urge to visit the unknown take us, when we have been, known and in turn influenced ‘everywhere’?

Outer Space The final frontier? Well, supposedly, space is infinite... that doesn’t strike me as very final, having no end and all. But still, space flight is becoming ever more viable, and there’s about every kind of possibility ‘out there’.

Here’s a few ideas that seem to be in the pipeline already! ‘Challenger Deep’ - The Mariana Trench Situated at the very bottom of the western Pacific Ocean, to the east of the Mariana Islands, the Mariana Trench is a narrow but almost unimaginably - if not unfathomably - deep ‘slot’ in the seabed. With an average width of a suggestive 69 kilometres, it’s already sounding slightly wrong by my description... Sure to attract the 18-30’s crowd then. But, be warned, its not quite Ibiza... The very deepest part is known as ‘Challenger Deep’ and is dark, wet and under massive pressure, which kind of sounds like the Welsh valleys during January. So if technology allows, we could create a modern Atlantis for future generations to visit. Twinned with Pontypridd, naturally.

Sun worshipper? Guess what, you could actually ‘go there’. It would seem popular, as no traveller would ever return home. Winter break? Mars, Mercury and Neptune are all frozen gas planets. Get’cya ski on, cosmic style - it’s time to buy that North Face parka that you figured you’d never be cold enough to need! Even colder, and with a name and nature that suggest ‘where the sun don’t shine’, we have the seventh planet, Uranus. I’d like to avoid the tasteless jokes, but it does, according to my research, have a complicated planetary ring system. I guess if there was a divine creator, he liked it, and took Beyonce’s advice. If it’s good enough for a deity who can go wherever he pleases, then perhaps we should see if we can go there.

I

have never before witnessed so much detail in a wedding. Leanda, Tom and their family put so much thought and organisation into it. Everything was just perfect.

The Tibetan Plateau (Qingzang) In complete contrast to the aforementioned Mariana Trench, this 2.5million kilometre elevated land mass is often called ‘the roof of the world’. Roof parties are often the stuff of legend, so why haven’t the hedonists headed to the hills quite yet, you ask?

The wedding ceremony and reception were held at their beautiful home. The ring bearer, baby Logan, dressed up as James Bond. Logan drove into the reception, surprising guests in a smart electric car - making his own grand entrance. The reception was beautifully decorated with cherry blossom trees, crystal, flowers, and candy carriage. There was a brilliant set of entertainment for guests following the ceremony in the garden - including a ‘Big Fat Gypsy Welly Competition’. The couple couldn’t have asked for better weather for their big day! The sun provided us with stunning and romantic bride & groom photography in the garden. Congratulations.

The second largest and most north eastern of the Balearic Islands, Menorca differs from the other islands in both climate and landscape. Menorca is an island of contrasts and colours, boasting miles of rugged coastline leading to more than one hundred beaches and secluded sandy bays, beautiful crescent coves, rugged cliffs, pine trees, archaeological sites and two main towns overlooking beautiful and natural harbours, all of which combine to offer an interesting and relaxing holiday destination. You will also discover excellent watersports, great food and charming attractions. Take time to explore Ciudadela, the original capital, which retains an aura of grandeur and aristocracy and has a picturesque port. Also Mahon the capital overlooks a magnificent harbour and is a hive of activity, both on land and sea. Take a boat trip or visit one of the many boutiques and craft shops on the quayside. Restaurants and bars provide a lively atmosphere. It’s a tranquil unspoilt island where the peace of life is leisurely and visitors come for peace and quiet, the pull of the Mediterranean, wonderful scenery and a welcoming family atmosphere. TOP 3 THINGS TO SEE & DO 1. Mahon – in the 18th century, Menorca’s capital was hot property. It has one of the deepest natural harbours in the world, so all the superpowers of the day wanted in on it. No wonder Nelson made it the base for the British fleet. 2. Ciudadela – this city is the Audrey Hepburn of the Balearics – it’s stylish, dignified and has a dash of old-world glamour. 3. Monte Toro – if you can brave the hairpin bends that zigzag up to Menorca’s highest peak, you’re in for a nice surprise – and we don’t just mean the views.

MAJORCA LIVELY AND FUN-PACKED HOLIDAYS ARE WHAT MAJORCA IS ALL ABOUT, WITH BEAUTIFUL BEACHES, GREAT WEATHER AND GETAWAYS TO SUIT ALL TASTES. The largest of the Balearic Islands, Majorca lies off the south east coast of Spain. You can soak up the Mediterranean sun on one of the many sandy beaches, take a dip in the picture-perfect blue seas, sample some true Spanish tradition or party the night away at one of the world-famous clubs in Magaluf. The capital, Palma, is a haven for tourists with its restaurants, bars and shopping, but you can also head inland to visit the charming, traditional towns and experience Majorca’s unique culture. Outside the capital and other towns, there are quaint villages still supported by the agricultural industry more than tourism - this is where the olives, lemons, oranges and almonds which feature so heavily on Majorcan menus are grown - and a visit to the country is the perfect antidote to the bustling towns. Hiring a car or hopping on a bicycle will open up all the delights of this wonderful island, letting you visit the traditional fishing villages, remote monasteries, stunning natural beauty and much more at your own pace. The coastline is made up of huge stretches of sandy beaches and fascinating, pine-clad coves while the centre of Majorca is dominated by spectacular mountains, such as the Serra de Tramuntana range. Whether you’re planning the annual family getaway, an all-inclusive treat or a last minute holiday, Majorca really hits the spot. TOP 3 THINGS TO SEE & DO 1. Palma Cathedral – Palma’s centrepiece is its Gothic cathedral. All pinnacles and flying buttresses, it’s the jewel of the old town, standing guard over the harbour.

3. Marineland Majorca – with residents including dolphins, crocs and sharks, this award-winning park makes for a great family day out.

EAT YOUR WAY AROUND THE WORLD: WEIRD FOOD DESTINATIONS

BALEARIC BEATS OR BALEARIC RETREATS... THESE TWO ISLANDS OFFER THE BEST OF BOTH. Away from its lively image, Ibiza boasts breathtaking scenery, charming holiday resorts and some great beaches. Along the coastline you’ll discover long sandy shorelines and rocky bays. Venture inland to discover villages and white-washed houses which are set in hilly hideaways amongst the rural patchwork of groves of almonds, olives and figs, dense pine forests and many tiny hamlets with pretty whitewashed village churches, whilst the entire coastline is made up of stunning cove beaches, many of which are deserted even in high season. Oozing a laidback, relaxed tempo. Ibiza caters for all tastes whether it’s sports, leisure, nightlife or simply relaxation. Ibiza boasts Dalt Vila, Ibiza Town’s fantastic world heritage site, and the infamous glitzy clubs for the young at heart. Ibiza is a fairly small island just 45km long by 25km wide and is the nearest Balearic Island to mainland Spain. You really need your own transport to reach the best spots although there’s a good bus service around the island and local boats serve various destinations along the coast.

Well, I would like to take this opportunity to state that this is grossly unfair, before a lynch mob of chefs does terrible things to me with an aubergine. British food happens to be great, just not for quite the same reasons that food is great in lots of other places.

Formentera is an island virtually untouched by time, just 20km south of Ibiza the island is just 20km long from east to west and boasts some of Spain’s longest, whitest and least crowded beaches, with turquoise waters. Formentera is simply a beach lovers’ paradise; no glitz, no clubs, no revelling - just watersports, cycling and walking, and enjoying the sun. There are few real towns, apart from EsPujols, the main tourist centre, and San Francisco, the island’s sleepy little capital.

British food is great precisely because our native culinary traditions are somewhat lacking. Yorkshire pudding is fantastic, some of our cheese isn’t half bad, and we make better bacon and sausages than anywhere else, but that hardly constitutes a national cuisine, as a moustache-twirling Frenchman would be swift to point out. In order to eat well, the British were required send our giant navy to foreign nations and ‘borrow’ their finest foodie traditions. We looted continental cooking, noodled all over Hong Kong, and invaded the Indian subcontinent to kidnap the secret of spice. Thus our favourite dishes are now stir fry, pasta and chicken tikka massala. It’s

TOP 3 THINGS TO SEE & DO 1. Eivissa, Ibiza Town – one place in Ibiza you have to see is the capital’s old quarter, which is known as Eivissa. 2. Hippy Market – Ibiza’s number one market comes to Es Cana every Wednesday. It started back in the Sixties and is still going strong today. 3. Café del Mar – when thinking of Ibiza’s famous sunset strip is the one and only Café del Mar for its summer of music, sunset and fun. Together with the beautiful views over the Mediterranean sea.

hard to imagine we ate before Sir Walter Raleigh sailed home with his ship full of potatoes to fry. More recent imports like sushi, falafels and the burrito are wonderful, but there’s a nagging sense that British food needs some new tricks. Heston Blumenthal is doing his thing, serving poached lego with truffled typewriter, but he can’t broaden our tastebuds alone, and that’s where you come in. I’ve put together a menu of some of the more ‘unusual’ meals being eaten around the world today, and you can do your bit for Britain by finding them, eating them, and reporting home to the motherland. Keep calm, and keep it down if possible.

BURPIN’ USA

If you were booking a one-way flight to weird food, you’d expect to head East first - probably to Japan. We’ll get there eventually, but let’s start somewhere you

don’t expect weird food to come from: the USA, home of the triple bacon cheeseburger and freedom fries. Skip that lot, and instead make a bee-line for Montana to experience their delicious Rocky Mountain oysters. Oysters, you ask? In a land-locked state full of cowboys? Well, Rocky Mountain oysters are indeed salty, but you won’t need to prise them out of the shell because they’re not shellfish but rather deep-fried bull testicles. No doubt they’re full of nutrients, and eating them is probably an aphrodisiac although perhaps not for the bull. Make sure you order a side of squirrel stew and some pickled pig feet whilst you’re at it.

GROSS EUROPE

Native lovers of the Rocky Mountain oyster would probably find many European traditions (frogs’ legs, say) pretty sicky, but those are small-fry to the dedicated gourmand. If you want something weird and French, find a restaurant that

ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

serves Canard à la Rouennaise - duck in blood sauce. It’s made by flaying and dismembering a partially roasted duck at your table, pausing to think about what on earth you’re doing and then loading the pieces into an antique silver crusher, which gradually extrudes a thick, gloopy sauce of concentrated bird juice onto a plate you’d better be prepared to clear. If that isn’t unusual enough, maybe you could dine on head-cheese, a tempting cold cut made from slow-boiled, softened pig head, which in some areas of northern Europe you can jazz up with sides of raw herring and putrefied shark meat, which has been buried underground until it is just right. I also hear it’s just about possible to enjoy sizzling Slovenian horseburgers, and the bizarre foodie on a budget can always dine on Scottish haggis (sheep’s stomach stuffed with delectable innards) without even forking out for a plane ticket. The true gastronomic Europhile will of course settle for nothing less than a lunch of casa marzu, a Sardinian sheep’s milk cheese that is justly famous amongst adventurous gourmands. Admittedly, this fame may be because it’s inhabited by hundreds of writhing maggots, who help digest the cheese and give it a unique,

creamy texture. You do need to be careful though, as they can jump up to six inches and can probably live in your brain.

ASIAN PERSUASION

An overview of strange Asian foodstuffs would fill the next couple of issues, so let’s just say that they’ve got the ‘adventurous’ food thing covered. More than covered, actually. I personally love durian fruit, despite it smelling like rancid babies’ nappies, but I balked the time I was offered balut -a Filipino delicacy that involves cooked, fertilised duck egg. I suppose it’s a bit like a creme egg, if a creme egg had crunchy foetus bones and a beak in it. There’s also a lot of spider and insect eating going on in Asia, which I generally don’t think is that weird, as Europeans love prawns, which are little more than cockroaches with SCUBA gear. I might not be so keen on the Cambodian speciality of deep-fried tarantulas, as it would be hard not to get tickled by their crunchy, hairy little legs. They also love deep fried bats, which I expect taste a bit like chicken. And then there’s Japan - strange food mecca of the culinary universe. I love

Japan, and not just because of the many charming cultural stereotypes I’ve picked up from watching anime and playing fighting games. I also love a country where few people bat an eyelid if you dine on gigantic tuna eyeball, live baby octopus or shirako, a delicacy which achieves gender equality in the seafood the world by replacing lady-fish eggs with only the plumpest and juiciest cod testes. In fact, it seems the hungry Japanese will eat literally anything that comes from the ocean, be it endangered (whale), loveable (dolphin) or poisonous (sushi made from deadly blowfish). I can’t help but suspect their long-running conflict with the sea-dwelling lizard Godzilla might have something to do with the desire to serve him with teriyaki sauce and pickled ginger. The lover of weirds Asian food lover can also enjoy ice-cream containing raw horsemeat, wine containing pickled mice, purchase dried lizards for soup and tuck into a delectable length of preserved ox penis. Honestly, doesn’t that sound a bit more exciting than yet another pub meal of lasagne, chips and salad? If I don’t see at least one of these on a tennerfest menu in Jersey within the next year, I’m going to be extremely disappointed.

Suitable for families, private groups and even corporate team building activates. Segway’s are a two-wheeled, electric personal transporter, which can be made to go forwards, backwards and sideways reaching a maximum speed of 12mph.

While a Segway is incredible fun to ride, it is serious transportation designed for today’s world. In many locations around the world a Segway is used as a main mode of transport. Built from the ground up with safety in mind and being around 11 times more energy efficient than the average car, its credentials couldn’t be any greener. Depending on the model, the device will travel between 12 and 24 miles on a single charge and costs around 15p to charge it back up. People look at Segways and think they must be difficult to balance on but quite the opposite said Jason Larrosa and business partner Mark Davison, the machine does all the hard work; all you have to do is step on and have fun with a gliding experience that is quite unique. The art of riding a Segway can be quickly mastered by both young and old, although those under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

TRENCH DEEP, PLATEAU HIGH RICK JONES

T

he urge to hot-foot it to somewhere other than where you started is nothing new. Scary huh? No

8

matter where you go, civilisation is only two days away.

Community PUPILS FOCUS ON FRIENDSHIP IN CHILDREN’S CHARITY COMPETITION The Children’s Centre is organising a competition in which school pupils are being be challenged to illustrate what friends mean to them. The winner of The Children’s Centre’s Friends Competition will see their artwork featured on the cover of the charity’s annual review publication. To enter the competition which is being run during October - pupils are asked to create a piece of artwork that depicts what the word ‘friends’ means to them. They can draw, paint, or create a collage. Susie Cox, Community Fundraiser at The Children’s Centre, said:

MANAGER OF THE PEEL BRANCH OF THE ISLE OF MAN BANK RETIRES AFTER FIRST STARTING IN 1968 Elaine Cain, who began her banking career aged only 15 for Isle of Man Bank in 1968, has just retired, having spent the last 12 years as manager of the Peel branch. Born and raised in Peel, Elaine attended local schools before starting work. ‘It’s so different now, I was the youngest employee and we used handwritten ledgers!’ she explains. She left the bank to look after her family in 1978, before returning part time after a few short years. Previously to being appointed Manager in 2000, she worked in a number of roles, including Staff Trainer and Customer Service Officer also based at the Peel branch. One of the many highlights of Elaine’s career was accepting a National Customer Service Award in 2009, which was presented at an event at the Grosvenor Hotel in London. Also attended by some of her staff, she says ‘We were so happy to be nominated so it was such a wonderful surprise to have won.’ The bank wish her a long and happy retirement.

“We have 10 schools taking part so far. The competition is aimed at primary school children and designed to get them thinking about friendship, and the importance of it. It’s a fitting competition for Anti-Bullying Month. In addition, the competition will highlight the support that The Children’s Centre receives from our ‘Friends’ scheme in which supporters pledge to make monthly donations to help fund our charitable projects that work with families, young people and children across the Island. As well as being used on the cover of our annual review, which is distributed to several thousand people, the winning artwork will feature on our ‘Become a Friend’ donation forms. The winner and their classmates will also receive a VIP Out2Play session!” There are bronze, silver and gold options when becoming a ‘Friend’ of The Children’s Centre. The bronze option is to donate £1 a month, silver is £3 per month and gold £5 per month. If you give a minimum of £5 a month you are eligible to be entered in the ‘Friends of The Children’s Centre’ monthly draw where you could win a top prize of £100. All those who sign up for the Friends scheme - whether bronze, silver or gold - will receive a certificate, newsletters, and invitations to The Children’s Centre’s events. You can make a larger monthly donation if you wish and for each £5 you donate each month you will receive one entry in to the monthly draw. If you do not wish to be included in the monthly draw you can simply tick the relevant box to ‘opt out’. To find out more about becoming a ‘Friend of The Children’s Centre’ go to: www.thechildrenscentre.org.im/support-our-work/ friends-of-the-childrens-centre/ Schools wishing to participate in the Friends Competition should contact Susie Cox by emailing: susiecox@thechildrenscentre.org.im or calling 631944.

DRESSING DOWN PUSHES UP FUNDS FOR JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT Students at Ballakermeen High School helped boost Junior Achievement’s funds by holding a dress-down day. Through the ‘non-uniform’ day the students raised £860.66, money that will help Junior Achievement’s work in schools, equipping young people with entrepreneurial skills for when they leave full-time education.

“EVENT LIGHTING SERVICES” AND UK SOUND FIRM “FUZION” DONATED PORTABLE PA SYSTEM Local company “Event Lighting Services” (ELS) in conjunction with UK sound firm “Fuzion” have recently donated a top of the range portable PA system to Braddan Primary School after hearing of their plight when their old PA system stopped working and the children were left without a vital facility for their school stage shows. Company owner Justin McMullin heard of their misfortune from a friend who has children at the school and immediately offered them help. “I made a call to long-time friend Tony Torlini at Fuzion whom supply us with specialist sound equipment and explained what had happened and that we would really like to help the school out by means of a donation. Tony loved the idea and arranged for a Mi-Pro portable PA system to be sent to us at no cost”.

The school’s head teacher Adrienne Burnett said: ‘As ever, Ballakermeen High School is grateful to Junior Achievement Isle of Man for the host of programmes and opportunities delivered to students across the school. Junior Achievement runs sessions for a number of year groups, providing our young people with the essential skills required for when they leave education and enter the workplace. We are particularly proud of our achievements in last year’s company programme, which aims to give our students experience of the business world and in entrepreneurship. A team from Ballakermeen sixth form won this year’s Island competition and had the exciting experience of representing the Isle of Man at the European finals in Bucharest in July.’ Junior Achievement’s chief executive Sue Cook said: ‘Ballakermeen High School has long been an enthusiastic supporter of Junior Achievement and we’re enormously grateful to receive this tremendous donation. I am, of course, all in favour of school uniform, but the occasional dress-down day is, I’m sure, as welcome to the students as it was to us.’

The PA system includes a wireless handheld microphone and built in CD player as well as the ability to use it purely on battery power making it ideal for use in classrooms etc. It can also be pulled along on the built in wheels just like a suitcase making it easy to transport around the school. It’s a great pleasure for us to be able to donate the PA system to the school at no cost and thus ensure that the children can still play music and have the use of a microphone for their shows. Headmistress of Braddan School Louise Oates said “I can’t thank ELS and Fuzion enough for their very kind generosity. It’s a lovely gesture that the children will be very grateful to them for and will get lots of benefit from”.

Hurry While Stocks Last… The EU is changing the way you are charged for insurance! Obviously unless you are looking to arrange life assurance or take out an annuity this will not affect you; but if you are currently considering revising your life assurance, to perhaps add critical illness cover, or if you are increasing your mortgage or taking more family protection you should act now before the rates change! Likewise if you are considering an annuity the change in the rates you can achieve may make a significant difference to you. Better to find out now then to miss the boat! For free and confidential advice on all of these matters and your financial situation in general please call Paul or Gerald on 612611 or e-mail advice@financialoptions.co.im

This December the European Parliament is implementing important changes to the way that we are all charged for insurance policies. This includes Car insurance, Income protection but also and perhaps most importantly, Life assurance and Annuities. From December 21st 2012, all European based insurance companies, and that includes the ones we use here on the island, will have to charge the same premium rates for every applicant regardless of whether they are male or female. Of course in principle that sounds fair, however it is a well established fact that statistically women live longer than men*. It has therefore followed that insurance companies have been able to charge lower rates for life assurance for the fairer sex. It has been estimated by the HM Treasury these changes could increase costs for women buying life assurance by up to 15%!** On the flip side this difference in life expectancy has also had a positive effect up until now when men purchase annuities. As the statistics show that a man’s life expectancy is lower, the annuity providers have been able to offer higher amounts for the same pension funds. According to the European Parliament this is discrimination against men and despite the medical facts, the statistics and the overwhelming historical evidence to the contrary have ruled to level up the premium rates which the various companies charge for life cover and life expectancy that they use for annuity calculations. Rightly or wrongly, this means that the insurance and annuity companies are having to revise the terms that they offer to women in terms of life assurance premiums and men in terms of their annuity rates. As such any policies put in place after 21st December this year will be based on the new rates, equalizing men and women and in reality costing women more for the same cover if it were arranged prior to this date. *UN Statistics Division, June 2012

GUEST WRITER OF THE MONTH

‘HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD WITH HUMILITY’ MICHAEL TAIT

Start by looking at the word “humility” which is derived from the Latin “humilitas” and can be translated as “grounded.” It describes someone who lives their life in a ‘down to earth’ manner. This mini mantra could be adopted by society.

President John F.Kennedy in his Inaugural Address on 20th January 1961 said ’And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man’. Unity can achieve anything, disunity achieves nothing. We do live in difficult times but in comparison to the last two hundred years, our lives are relatively stable. Today’s society, in general, can not see what it has, only what it has not. The irony is that the things we believe are indispensable, will not make us any happier. Society could learn to be content with less possessions and it would feel richer in mind and body. Less is more.

32

As my mother always used to say ‘Can you live without it ?‘ With your hand on your heart the answer is usually “yes”. We can live with less. We can give things away to those who need them or give our time to people who require a helping hand. We can be happier and more fulfilled in our lives. Rewards will be receive, perhaps not monetary terms but they will come in some form : a door being opened, a surprise gift, a letter from an old friend. All you need to do is to give nconditionally. We need to take less and give more. A friend laughed at me when I suggested

this to him. He said that society as a whole was too selfish and would not wish to contribute anything. Perhaps, but there lies the answer. Society demands change for the better but will expect a miracle, rather than contribute a small amount of time or money for the same result. Society can decide if it wishes to fulfil its desire for a better world or not. Are we strong enough to achieve this ? The changes required are smaller than you think.

Were there any policies presented at the recent UK political party conventions which gave you cause for concern or celebration?

How will the current economic climate impact the future employment status of the Isle of Man?

I am a 64 year old man and hope to retire next year. I have a pension pot of £100,000; can you tell me how I can get the most income?

A.

A.

A.

The recent UK political party conventions have highlighted two very contrasting opinions as to where overall policy must be directed to ease the difficult economic conditions. The potential impact on the Isle of Man is also contrasting, but not entirely consistent. In the first group, there is recognition that growth has to come from the private sector and for this to happen the conditions including the tax system must be right. This means low tax for business and incentives for entrepreneurs who we need to create new jobs and hence growth. This is the position accepted widely in the USA and by traditional Conservatives. Such policies are needed and the resultant benefits should also improve the outlook for the Isle of Man and other closely linked economies. The opposing opinion is that the rich should be taxed more to alleviate public finances. This is the position taken by traditional Liberal Democrats and can be seen in action in France right now. This stance is extremely concerning and potentially very damaging to economies if taken to the extreme. Whilst places like the Isle of Man can benefit from people relocating here from high tax jurisdictions, the overall impact is negative because of the downward overall impact on economic growth.

Tackling unemployment means encouraging businesses to expand their workforce. In England, if an employee wants to bring a claim for unfair dismissal, they now require two year’s continuous service rather than one. Fees for bringing a claim in the Employment Tribunal have been mooted. It is no doubt hoped that if employers feel it is easier to dismiss staff who are underperforming, they may be more willing to employ them. No such changes have yet been brought implemented on the IOM but it remains to be seen what steps the Government may feel are necessary if unemployment on the Island increases. In the IOM, the Equality Bill is being drafted which, if made law, will prohibit discrimination on the grounds of race, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion and gender reassignment. Preventing discrimination on these grounds can only be a good thing, however there will no doubt be a raft of employers who will not welcome further regulation. Some would say that hard won employee rights are being eroded but this seems to be in favour of a system which encourages employment - a worthwhile aim. There is clearly a balance to be struck between emboldening employers to take on new staff and balancing the important rights of employees. In an ideal world, one would be achieved without sacrificing the other and I remain hopeful of this.

From 21st December, annuity providers will no longer be able to offer different rates for men and women. Traditionally, men have received a higher yearly annuity income than women due to their lower life expectancy. This will not be the case after December 2012. The new Directive will reduce the pension income for men who retire after the deadline. It is estimated that equalisation will see male annuities lose between 2% and 4% in pension income. HM treasury has gone further, suggesting it could be as much as 13%¹. Either way, this could affect any or all male and joint life annuity clients planning to retire in the near future. This basically means men who are thinking of retiring in 2013 could get a significantly higher pension if they retire now. It’s worth noting that the minimum age that you can take your pension benefits is 55. By taking action before the EU deadline, you could make a real difference to your income in retirement. At a time of historically low annuity rates, it is essential that you receive the maximum pension available. Make sure you take advice on your annuity needs and remember there are specialist providers who offer enhanced annuities for clients with impaired health or lifestyle issues. As a result, on average, clients receive 23%² more pension. Sources: ¹Provider and HM Treasury. Figures are based on the general situation for male retirees at age 65. For enhancements due to lifestyle or ill health, the difference will depend on individual circumstances and could be higher or lower than these amounts. ²Provider July 2012; based on average enhancement provided to our clients in 2011 and compared with the best standard rate available on The Exchange.

4.

Why do so many gaming companies choose to set up on the Isle of Man?

A.

Not for the weather obviously! Seriously though there are a number of natural advantages that IOM has over other blue-chip gaming jurisdictions. Straight away any jurisdiction intending to attract online gaming companies needs to provide high quality, reliable power and internet capability – these the island has in abundance, and in spite of what Manx consumers think, our power and internet costs compare favourably with those suffered by gaming companies in other jurisdictions.

Another key reason is the favourable tax treatment afforded to companies by Treasury. Corporate tax rates here are zero compared to higher rates in other territories. Indirect taxes undoubtedly put us at a commercial disadvantage when dealing with EU based players but our Asian facing operators are less affected by the VAT costs, hence the concentration of operators based here on IOM whose customer base is largely in the Far East. Thirdly we can provide a high quality of life – good schools, good health care and good communications with other parts of the world. These factors should not be underestimated as many of the people working in the industry have young families and have a need to travel to other parts of the world. We are extremely fortunate to be able to jump on to a plane at short notice to somewhere like Manchester or London, connecting to long-haul intercontinental flights. I have only been on IOM for around 2½ years but I can honestly say it is the quality of life aspect that drove my choice of location.

5.

Does the global eGaming sector show any signs of slowing down?

A.

For the past 10 years, eGaming has truly been a boom sector. However, much of the growth and wealth created has been limited to North America, Western Europe, Australia and parts of Asia. Now in its second decade, online gaming is beginning to deliver on its global promise. The Asian-facing online operators continue to see tremendous growth, which is reflected in the number of English Premier League shirt sponsorships we continue to see on television each week. Eastern Europe and many of the former Russian CIS states are also contributing to growth. Latin America, led by Mexico and Brazil, are also becoming important new areas for the sector. While growth in Western Europe is expected to slow due to regulatory and competitive pressures, there are many new areas of growth for the market to leverage. Large parts of the Indian sub-continent and Africa are yet to be developed. Citi recently noted that Africa will have a larger workforce than both China and India by 2050 and already has over 1 billion mobile phones. With the explosion of mobile gaming in the past 3 years set to continue, I expect both Africa and India to be on our radar screens over the next 3 years. The potential for regulatory reform in the US may also pave the way for the re-opening of what was once the single largest online gaming country in the world. These points highlight the truly global market potential for online gaming.

Q.

6.

Do you think businesses have a responsibility to get involved in community matters such as the Olympics?

A.

Yes, definitely, I think it’s very important that Lloyds supports Island Community projects. With Lloyds Banking Group being one of the largest employers on the Island, we feel it is our responsibility to be involved. Many of our team have children at local schools and family members who are part of the local community. By investing in community projects, we benefit our employees, our customers and the Island as whole. Our experience is that our involvement is good for internal moral, it rewards the loyalty of our existing clients and demonstrates our commitment to helping improve and sustain the quality of Island life. It’s also about creating an environment where we can encourage our team to share the same values about the importance of caring for the community we live in. I do believe that, especially on an Island like ours, corporate success and playing a role in improving community welfare are connected. I personally think that the legacy of the Olympics will be the bringing together of the Island community to celebrate the wonderful day when the torch came to us. The response of everyone who came to view the torch was quite overwhelming and the Lloyds team said that the reaction on the Isle of Man was among the most moving they had experienced. I don’t think many people on the Island could forget the 2012 Games as our amazing cyclist Peter Kennaugh brought a Gold medal home, the first won by a Manxman since 1912.

LEANDA & TOM’S WONDERLAND THEMED WEDDING Mr and Mrs Richardson’s wedding day was like watching a fairy tale unfold. I had the pleasure of capturing the happiness of their unforgettable day on camera.

I

have never before witnessed so much detail in a wedding. Leanda, Tom and their family put so much thought and organisation into it. Everything was just perfect.

Featured Exhibition

FEATURED exhibitions Botany, zoology and human biology – see them all in the latest Sayle Gallery themed exhibition

Colour & Texture - An Exhibition at The Pavillion restaurant and Ballroom in Laxey

Location: The Pavillion Restaurant, Laxey Admission: FREE Telephone: 862121 A selection of five local artists, from amateur to professional, have grouped together to display a selection of their art this autumn. Available until 30th November at the Pavillion Restaurant and Ballroom in Laxey, Colour & Texture presents works of varying mediums by Des Brookes, Bryony Harrison, Pat Kelly, Sheena Quayle and Brigid Stowell.

Location: The Sayle Gallery, Douglas Admission: FREE Telephone: 674557 Seven Sayle Gallery artists have taken the theme of the new exhibition to diverse extremes, using their own fascination with the natural world as a starting point to produce works of huge variation, in both media and subject. Brigid Stowell will be exhibiting what she calls ‘portraits’ of trees and plants, allowing these forms to take centre stage instead of being just part of a greater landscape, and Jelena Benson has used the unusual, natural objects which she has collected to provide a starting point to a series of collages. Renowned local wood sculptor Gavin Carter will be exhibiting a number of works and former Sayle Gallery artist-in-residence Hazel Walsh has submitted both photographs and canvases exploring the biological forms we can’t see: the organs which keep us alive and functioning. Frogs and tadpoles make an unexpected appearance in the works of two very different artists: Colleen Corlett’s ceramics and Brigid Stowell’s paintings. Colleen Corlett has taken this opportunity to interpret the theme in various media, including a glass panel which juxtaposes the recreation of a delicate cabbage leaf in heavy glass. Other Sayle Gallery artists taking part in this exhibition are Charlotte Jane Henry and Rosi Robinson

Having displayed his work with the IOM Art Society and at many other group exhibitions on the island for many years now, Des Brookes here presents work in a startling array of mediums upon a wide variety of topics. He’s always seeking to push himself into exciting and original ways of producing art, and this is reflected in the works he is presenting here. Semi-professional artist, Bryony Harrison’s art is unmistakable, with characteristic bold use of colour and vibrancy. Here, Bryony presents a cross-section of her work to date, from semi-abstract landscapes to more expressive abstract work, drawing inspiration from local scenes, the ocean, and even outer space. Brigid Stowell is a professional artist. She is presenting here a selection of impressionist paintings from her Streets of Douglas series, a study of the island’s capital; Brigid’s home for most of her life. Feeling Douglas to be an under-represented study in art on the island, this series is an attempt at finding beauty in the mundane. Having sold pieces of her textiles and mixed media work locally, nationally and internationally, Sheena Quayle draws her inspiration from architecture, the Manx landscape, beaches and various patterns formed in natural and construction environments. Through the use of recycled and foraged materials, Sheena’s work could arguably be considered Artistic Upcycling. Pat Kelly recently exhibited alongside Sheena at the Hodgson Loom in Laxey, and her style of mixing textile techniques as well as recycling and upcycling perfectly complements Sheena’s work. Specialising in plant dyeing fibres such as cashmere, silk, llama fleece and locally-sourced wool, Pat’s work has long been inspired by the forest garden she developed on her family farm. The exhibition is located in the ballroom and is available for viewing during the restaurant’s usual opening hours, so please pay a visit.

Trains of Mann Launches a New Range of local Canvasses

W

ell known Isle of Man author and photographer David Lloyd-Jones has recently launched a range of limited edition fine art canvases of the trains and trams of the Isle of Man under the title of ‘Trains of Mann’. These unique photographs take full advantage of modern high dynamic range (HDR) technology, which when professionally printed on the matt surface of a canvas, produces an effect that looks very similar to a painting. The HDR effect also empathises the smoke and steam coming out of the locomotives that looks more realistic than normal photographs, which tends to flatten and reduce the effect. HDR technology give the picture an extra punch and ‘wow’ factor. The smoke and steam seems to comes to life, adding to the thrill and romantic atmosphere of steam locomotives. The effect also bring other details to life too, such as leafs on trees, passing storm clouds and a rain soaked platform that looks so realistic, its almost like your hand would get wet if you touched the picture. The range of canvases cover both the Isle of Man Railway and Groudle Glen Railway plus the tramways of the Manx Electric Railway and Sneafell Mountain Railway. These pictures have been selected from David’s extensive library of railway images to show the island’s railways and tramways at their best. In addition to the Manx trains & trams, David is also releasing several images of popular island subjects under the title of ‘Reflections of Mann’. The first two subjects to be release on canvas are as equally as popular as the trains, being the Great Wheel at Laxey and the Douglas Lifeboat. More images will be added to the collection very shortly. The Trains of Mann collection is currently on a eight week exhibition at the new opened Salmon Centre & Art Galley until the end of October, which is located at the end of Mines Road in Laxey. The Salmon Centre is open daily between 11 to 5pm. There is also a dedicated website at www.trainsofmann.com where all images are on show and available to buy online. David is also hoping to sell his work to a world wide market of railway enthusiasts, who have a passion for the island’s railways. About David: Local born David Lloyd-Jones has a passion for both writing and photography. His pictures are often seen locally and frequently feature in UK magazines too. He has been writing in the railway magazines all around the world for the past twenty years actively promoting the island’s railways and has had so many photos published down the years he admits, he has lost count as to how many. As well as writing for magazines, David has penned three books published on the island’s railway, the latest being ‘Manx Railway’s - A celebration’ in 2009. He is currently researching and writing a fourth book.

The Aurora Borealis Spectacular On Monday 8th October Dave Thornley captured the Northern Lights from Ballaugh beach, quite a rare a spectacular treat for those who were lucky enough to see it.

T

he Aurora Borealis is visible from the Isle of Man a few times during the year but is normally a distant green or white glow on the horizon. It’s only during exceptional circumstances and very clear atmospheric conditions we see the these incredible curtains of colour. The Northern Lights occur when incoming solar radiation hits the earth’s upper atmosphere and excites atoms to a new energy state, emitting colours, which is energy in the form of light. The solar cycle is about eleven years; this cycle is due to peak in 2013 which should provide an opportunity for people in the mid latitudes, including the Isle of Man, to witness these events again.

The new exhibition “Man & Land”, made of 30 new paintings, will be held at the Erin Arts Centre from the 7th of November until the 21st of December. It focuses essentially on my special relationship with the natural world and includes some of my favourite places on the island, often captured on a stormy day. Human figures are also given a decisive role in this new body of work. Caught between dramatic skies and harsh land engaging in the thoughtful contemplation of nature. It is a theme that has always fascinated me, and here on the island, I have found most of the ingredients which enable me to explore this spiritual connection between man and land as well as other states such as solitude and isolation. Whatever the subject, I hope that the strong sense of mood and atmosphere displayed in my work will speak to the Manx people whose Island inspires me greatly.”

For A Wander-ful Winter Wardrobe One of the best things about travelling and discovering new places is embracing the culture; the community, the cuisine, the clothes! Wherever you roam, it is pretty much guaranteed that you’ll come across countless unique boutiques, or market stalls selling clothes, jewellery and fabrics, offering a multitude of style inspirations at often ridiculously low prices. Sadly, while you might be able to grab some bargains once you’re out there, it’s getting there that can be the costly part. However, for those of us that are a bit too skint to swan off to Singapore, the trusty high street is packed with foreign-influenced fashion this season. Here are some ideas to to add a touch of the exotic to any ensemble, whatever the winter weather may bring… Get stylish and Slavic with furry fashion! Fake fur is the perfect fabric for winter accessories, keeping you cosy while also keeping you looking cool. Fur is often used for Eastern-European inspired pieces, such as the Cossack hats and headbands that can be found in Miss Selfridge and River Island over the coming months, and has eternally glamorous connotations. If the Cossack look isn’t really your thing, why not check out Spirit Hoods? They might be pricey, but they’re a playful and fun furry alternative, and similar versions can be found in stores such as River Island with a much more appealing price tag.

The dark nights that are drawing in don’t have to mirror your wardrobe; inject some colour into your wardrobe with paisley prints. This pretty pattern, originating from Iran, is all over smart shirts and shorts, pencil skirts, dresses and even shoes. Topshop have really taken to this trend and have a great selection of paisley pieces. Check out their collection of metallic jacquard trousers for a fresh take on this classic print. Another way to give your outfit a carefree traveller feel, and one that can be worn all year round, is to accessorise with tribal-inspired jewellery. Aztec influences are always popular, and silver and turquoise work well together on cuff bracelets long necklaces and chunky rings, adding a bright pop of colour to any outfit. The great thing about this trend is that you can even do it yourself; experiment with small and colourful or chunky patterned beads, or check out the charity shops for authentic fair-trade items from afar.

Backpack Beauty

Essential 1:

Tinted moisturiser/ Blemish Balm.

Beauty Essentials

Almost every beauty brand have launched their own BB cream, so you are bound to be able to find one to suit your skin type. These little miracles moisturise, disguise blemishes or uneven skin tone, help prevent spots and most include some level of SPF. Stock up before your travels with a visit to Superdrug, Boots or local chemists, and try BB creams by the likes of Garnier, Bourjois Paris and Witch.

Backpack Beauty

Essential 2:

Cream or gel blusher

BEAUTY

in a backpack Whether you’re planning on visiting the far corners or just fancy a weekend away, toiletries are always the most annoying part of packing, be it due to baggage restrictions or just simple practicality – red lippy is hardly top of your cosmetic priorities when you’re taking a sweaty hike through the jungle undergrowth! But backpacking with the bare essentials doesn’t have to mean going barefaced. Stick to the basics and, as with the rest of your travel supplies, keep it light; your face and your poor bag-bearing back will thank you for it!

5

essentials to pack 58

Powder has no place in hot climates, which is why cream and gel blushers are the perfect solution to stay freshfaced and nicely flushed; a far better idea than colouring your cheeks with painful sunburn! Maybelline Dream Touch cream blush has a great light texture, and comes in a variety of shades to suit any skin tone.

Backpack Beauty

Essential 3: Vaseline

You can’t go wrong with the classic blue tin! Or the pink one, the green one, the brown one...Vaseline may have branched out into cocoa butter and rose & almond varieties, but its benefits remain the same. As well as being a handy size for travelling, these little petroleum jelly pots help moisturise dehydrated skin, dry lips and tired eyes.

Backpack Beauty

Essential 4:

Waterproof mascara Even if you don’t intend to take a trip to one of the world’s beautiful beaches, a good waterproof mascara can withstand a fair amount of humidity and sweat, so the panda eyes can be left to the pandas! Rimmel London and No7 both offer highly rated waterproof mascaras, for prices that won’t make your eyes water if you lose them on your travels.

Backpack Beauty

Essential 5:

Cleansing wipes There’s nothing better than wiping away the dirt of the day with a refreshing cleansing wipe, especially if your skin has been suffering through hours of sun, sea and sweat. Simple do a range of cleansing wipes to suit different skin types, including sensitive skin, that can tackle waterproof mascara just as easily as grime.

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS Okay, so it’s safe to say that our summer has been a little less than great in terms of nice weather! So a winter holiday to the sun might just be what the Doctor ordered.

W

hen travelling baggage weight restrictions force the modern traveller to think about their cosmetic bottle size in greater detail. Many of the big brand names over the last several years have avoided marketing generic packing due to cost, and if anything they have gone from the normal 300ml to litre size’s. However, the return of the travel size products is on the up with companies such as ALTERNA and AVEDA both producing holiday travel kits. An alternative to buying holiday travel kits are ‘fill-ables’ which are empty size (100 ml) bottles that you can fill with your own favourite shampoo and conditioner, ideal to get you through a two week holiday. All products are available to purchase at Utopia.

HOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED FLYING DIRECT FROM THE ISLE OF MAN TO YOUR HOLIDAY DESTINATION WILL SEE THE APPEAL, THOSE WHO HAVEN’T - YOU NEED TO. NO MORE COSTLY AND LENGTHY OVERNIGHT STAYS IN THE UK BEFORE BOARDING A SECOND FLIGHT, NO MORE STRESS: WITH A DIRECT FLIGHT, YOU CUT OUT FLYING INTO THE UK AND WAITING AROUND OR STAYING OVERNIGHT. AFTER ALL, WE ARE GOING ON HOLIDAY, WHY NOT SECURE THAT HOLIDAY FEELING FROM THE MINUTE YOU DEPART RONALDSWAY?

as soon as you step onboard the aircraft at Ronaldsway Airport, you travel non-stop to your destination. Not only that, the flights are daytime flights, departing at 11am and returning at 730pm. No more flights from a UK airport in the middle of night. You won’t be getting on a cattle flight either, pushing and shoving with hundreds of other passengers, rushing to get the best seats on a huge 747. Direct flights to holiday destinations from the Isle of Man are onboard a Flybe Q400 78 seater. Which is more like a private jet in comparison.

2. Soller Railway – this is no ordinary train journey. Every year, more than a million people hop aboard this 1920s electric train bound for Soller, a pretty little village on the north western coast. 3. Marineland Majorca – with residents including dolphins, crocs and sharks, this award-winning park makes for a great family day out.

Formentera

Ibiza-Formentera Balearic beats or Balearic retreats... these two islands offer the best of both.

Whether you’re a young family, just finding your ski-legs or a die-hard skier, you’ll apparently fall in love with this beautiful area that has something for everyone. The Chalets also attract visitors in the spring and summer as Samoëns, and the surrounding countryside is great for a wide range of activities and adventure breaks. The stunning scenery attracts hikers, cyclists and climbers and there are also opportunities for white water rafting. For those who are less energetic the mountains provide a great location for many artists and photographers wanting to capture the spectacular views. Samoëns is recognised as a ‘Ville Fleurie’ or ‘floral village’ and has been awarded the Coq D’Or for being one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Flowers in the summer and fairy lights in winter add to the beauty and charm of Samoëns and the surrounding area. The ski season in the Samoëns area usually runs from the beginning of December to the end of April. For more information about My Mountain Chalets go to www.mymountainchalets.com

Words | Nathan White The Silk Road is becoming vastly more popular among western travellers through the growing availability of books and even because of its history alone. Contrary to its name it is not a road, nor is it made of silk. It is rather an across land route used for trading goods. The trade route is an inhospitable region of land which separates China from Europe and western Asia. A large section of this arid land is in Xinjiang above Tibet forming the Taklimakan desert. The Taklimakan is renowned for its land moving sands and is noted by the infamous Marco Polo stating that it is filled with daemons and strange nocturnal noises. The trading route was in use as far back as 200 B.C and more than likely even older than that. There was a plethora of products to barter for that changed depending on the country connection point along the trading route. The European connection would have items such as wine, salt, woven goods and cultured metal work. The west Asian connection would bring materials like Jade, lapis lazuli and crystal. You could even buy a camel or a dog and a horse if you’re lucky. The Asian connection brought some of the most sought after items such as gold or silver and the item which all of the richest men were looking for, the silk. From being obsolete and in isolation for centuries, interest from the west has sparked enthusiasm for people to embark on a Marco Polo type travelling experience. To qualify yourself for this type of travelling you will need to be highly resolute and attain a level of imprudence if you are going through some of the Middle Eastern countries. These are the countries notorious for armed intervention from the west and so your time here will be laid low and quick. Normally the journey would start in China and end shortly before Xinjiang as this area is known for nuclear weapons testing. There have been accounts of westerners doing the whole route through Afghanistan to Syria where there was a marine connection to Europe but this brings you a bit too close to Iraq for comfort. This route has only been taken by some of the most judicious of travellers either journalists or academics. They will also be accompanied by local translators where they then have access to the local people and their language. Here they will be able to use cunning and trade commodities for a guide who will show them the most secure passage far from any conflict.

on at the BBC office. On reaching the office he realised that one of the reporters was interviewing one of the local war lords as a war had recently broken out in exactly the place he wanted to go. “Well we’re having a bit of a confrontation with Atan Ahamed”, his rival, “we’re negotiating for peace but he’s not being very helpful” said General Abdulla Astum, the local warlord, and meanwhile in the back ground you could hear machine gun fire as he was talking. Almost one hour later a dialog was opened with Atan Ahmad to ask how thing were going with General Astum. “Well General Astum is being a little bit difficult...”and still in the background the faint sound of gun fire. Colin had to delay his expedition for a year due to conflict in this area. He originally started his travels on the first part of the Silk Road through the Middle East in 2003 and had to delay until 2004. As of 1970 the Chinese government have realised that capital can be generated from tourism and have largely tried to excavate large portions of the key connections on the old Silk Road. Just before Xinjiang you will be able to visit the Astana tombs. This is where the people of the city of Gaochang were buried and significant findings have been made to show what it was like to live on the road back in the day. Following the road west and arriving at the Taklimakan desert is where some of the most diverse things are found, like the thirteen different races of people. Some of the ancient grottos and cities from the road can send you back in time to how it must have been to live with a system of bartering and grandiose journeys. If you have an interest in archaeology then this is the place to be. If you can find yourself to the mysterious city of Kashgar they still use the system of bartering at the Sunday markets which maintain much of the roads spirit. Here you will find some exotic spices and woven wool, livestock or silver knives. Defined over generations of great dynasties this road was in use supplying china with products up until six to seven hundred years ago. This road enabled man and cultures to spread far beyond the boundaries of each of the continents. It brought political relations and grew economies. It marked the development of civilisation itself and could never have happened without the Great Road.

EAT YOUR WAY AROUND THE WORLD: WEIRD FOOD DESTINATIONS WORDS | GRANT RUNYON

YOU CAN ACCUSE THE BRITISH PEOPLE OF BEING MANY THINGS, BUT BEING ADVENTUROUS EATERS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. WE HAVE A REPUTATION FOR STODGE, CHIPS AND MARMITE, AND FOR BOILING EVERY VEGETABLE INTO A MUSH MORE SUITABLE TO FORCE-FEEDING THAN HAUTE CUISINE. OUR MAJOR EXPORT IS FAT-TONGUED OAF JAMIE OLIVER, SO NO SURPRISE THAT BRITISH CUISINE IS STILL ON THE GLOBAL C LIST. Well, I would like to take this opportunity to state that this is grossly unfair, before a lynch mob of chefs does terrible things to me with an aubergine. British food happens to be great, just not for quite the same reasons that food is great in lots of other places. It’s

68

hard to imagine we ate before Sir Walter Raleigh sailed home with his ship full of potatoes to fry.

If you want something weird and French, find a restaurant that

serves Canard à la Rouennaise - duck in blood sauce. Admittedly, this fame may be because it’s inhabited by hundreds of writhing maggots, who help digest the cheese and give it a unique,

because quality matters

creamy texture.

And then there’s Japan - strange food mecca of the culinary universe. I love

Walking & Wine

W

alking and wine make a great combination! It is not a coincidence that many of Europe’s wine regions are located near to water. In the early years of commercial wine making, all transportation was on water, and proximity to rivers or the sea was a distinct advantage. It therefore follows that many regions are in or close to attractive valleys with walking routes through the vineyards. There is nothing better to prepare you for a decent meal and glass or two of wine than a walk through the vineyards from which the wine has originated, maybe watching people about their work, pruning or even harvesting the grapes. Many of these beautiful destinations are off the usual tourist circuit, but worth seeking out if you enjoy the wines. Galicia in north west Spain is one example. The climate is familiar to those of us who live on the Isle of Man – wet and windy! There is very little between America and the Spanish coastline, and the south westerly winds frequently batter the coast bringing with them plenty of rain. Historically it is one of the poorest regions of Spain with fishing and farming its main industries. Over the years the people here have learned to use

every part of what they catch down to the shells of shellfish used to make fertiliser for the soil. The capital is Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of St James are buried in the city’s beautiful Cathedral. Santiago remains a destination for people to walk the pilgrims route across northern Spain, staying in some wonderful traditional paradors, hotels opened by the state to use tourism to protect heritage sites. In Europe, wine and food in a region are generally well matched and Galicia is no exception. For the vast array of seafood on offer the perfect wine is the fresh, fruity Albarinos that adorn every restaurant wine list. There may be a choice of up to 30 different Albarinos in any one restaurant, each produced in a slightly different style but with a similar flavour. The Albarino grape is thick skinned, which allows it to grow and ripen in this challenging climate, without becoming badly affected by rot. The method of trellising the vines also helps, with them trained high to allow plenty of sunshine to the vines, while giving more ventilation.

The Fulget Albarino is a new wine to The Wine Cellar, and was one of the best selling wines at our recent tastings. This wine is from a small, family run estate produced from vines planted on slopes that

give shelter from the harsh winds and also have good drainage. At £11.75 it offers great value for money for a classy, elegant Albarino. In a different style is the Orballo Albarino, from Bodegas la Val, one of the largest vineyard owners in Rias Baixas, the main wine region of Galicia. This is a fuller style, with more voluptuous peach fruit flavours, a touch of minerality and a citrus finish. At £10.45, it is another good value wine in a softer more rounded and easy drinking style. The Carqueixal Albarino (£12.45) is another example and is a combination of the styles of the other two. A wonderfully fresh acidity, balanced by a full peach and citrus fruit on the palate and a lingering finish, makes an excellent partner to shellfish. Check out the wines at The Wine Cellar and if you enjoy them, book those flights to Santiago and enjoy a walk through the rugged terrain of Galicia!

Why so many people love decorating their homes for Christmas, even though they are fully aware they’ll have to take the stuff down a couple of weeks later, is a topic for psychiatrists and psychologists. We all do it, and love doing it... putting them up anyway. Holiday decorations, like candles, lights and Christmas trees, add a joyous and festive mood around the home. However, if you do not use these decorations properly, they can cause fires, injuries and even death!

Here are some simple safety tips to keep you safe in your home this Christmas. Christmas Lights Before putting your lights on display, check for cracked bulbs and ensure that you don’t mix exterior lights with indoor ones. Test the lights on a non-flammable surface for 15 minutes or more while turned on to see if there is any smoke or signs of melting. Replace any burnt-out bulbs. There should be three or fewer sets of lights for each extension cord used. Never leave lights on before going to bed or when leaving your house. Ensure that lights are nowhere near drapes or any other combustible materials and that they are not touching tree needles or Christmas ornaments. Check to see that cords and plugs are not near the water in the tree stand and that they are not placed in areas where someone might trip over them.

christmas shabby chic workshop

Christmas Trees Dry Christmas trees can be a fire hazard. Lift your tree and tap the bottom of it on the ground. If it is fresh, only a few needles will fall off. Examine the trunk to see if it is sticky with sap, which also indicates a fresh tree. Maintain water in the tree stand so that the tree will not dry out. Ensure that the tree is positioned away from fireplaces and heaters and where it cannot block exits or entrances. As soon as the holiday is over, remove your tree from the house. Artificial trees should be covered with a bag or kept in a container to prevent dust buildup; it is possible for flameresistant trees to catch fire if dusty. Christmas Decorations Small ornaments and tinsel should be kept away from younger children and pets. They could potentially cause choking if swallowed. Do not use old ornaments that may have been made with toxic materials. Metal ornaments may cause electric shocks. While pretty, angel hair or spun glass may irritate skin, lungs and eyes, so choose other Christmas decorations with no potential harmful effects. Avoid using any decorations that are breakable or with sharp edges.

Winter Check List

A

BRITISH GAS STUDY HAS SHOWN THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC IS CONFUSED ABOUT THE SEASONAL WEATHER CHANGES IN THE UK, WHICH IS IMPACTING ON THE NATION’S PREPARATIONS FOR WINTER. THAT IS WHY THEY HAVE CREATED A SIMPLE CHECKLIST SO YOU CAN ENSURE YOU’RE ALL SET FOR WINTER. CHECK YOUR RADIATORS ARE WORKING PROPERLY If your radiators have cold spots, this means that you have air in the central heating system, so you will need to bleed them in order to get them working efficiently. To do this, turn off the central heating system and then turn the radiator key until the air stops and water runs consistently. When you turn the system back on, the problem should be solved. STOP YOUR HOME LOSING HEAT A simple way to help keep the heat in your home is to hang heavy, lined curtains at windows and close them as soon as it starts to get dark. If you have Venetian blinds, tilt the blades so they face downwards. Make sure all your home’s windows and doors seal properly to stop warm air escaping. For any that don’t, fitting draught excluders, which you can buy from most DIY stores, is a quick and cheap way to cut down on your energy bills. Did you know that your home loses a third of its heat through the walls? Insulating wall cavities could save you around £110 per year, and insulating your loft could also save you up to £145. On the Isle of Man proable more. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE TEMPERATURE RIGHT Make sure the temperature of your home is set at the right level for you and that heating is not left on unnecessarily. By turning down your thermostat by only one degree you could help cut your energy bills by up to 10 per cent, which could save you around £60 per year on energy bills. At least!

Decorate your home this Christmas with unique decorations available at abode.

INSULATE YOUR PIPES Burst pipes were a huge issue for households during the cold spell last winter. To help prevent burst pipes in your home, ensure all the pipework is properly insulated using lagging, which you can buy cheaply from most DIY shops.

MTTV ON-DEMAND NEWS SERVICE PASSES HALF A MILLION VIEWS

TYNWALD WELCOMES SHETLAND ISLANDS GUESTS

Eva Rose’s Garden Project Smashes £20k target

MTTV, the Island’s first online HD video news service, has now been watched more than 500,000 times according to statistics provided by Google Analytics. Over 600 individual reports have been published since Manx Telecom launched the service on February 1st this year, covering every aspect of Island life from breaking news, sport, politics, business and finance through to entertainment, charity events and the environment.

Tynwald welcomed two Shetland Island guests during a two-day information-gathering visit.

A donation by local fiduciary and fund services specialist Abacus has helped smash the £20,000 target for Julie Crossley, her family and all the supporters and fundraisers behind the touching project ‘Eva Rose’s Garden’.

Available through the manx.net website, MTTV viewers are also able to follow real time daily updates via an RSS feed and through Manx Telecom’s Facebook and Twitter pages, alerting them the moment a new report is published. With the MTTV channel also planned to be available through YouView set top boxes that Manx Telecom launched earlier this month, Manx Telecom CEO Mike Dee believes the ability to watch MTTV through any internet enabled device has been key to its success. He commented: “We’re delighted to have achieved this significant milestone so soon and to see such a wide range of local content being regularly watched by people of all ages on their PC, tablets and mobile handsets on a daily basis. It’s a definite indicator that people want to get up to date local news content as it happens, wherever and whenever they want it - that’s a perfect fit for us as a communications business and a great opportunity for advertisers to reach the rapidly growing ‘digital’ local audience.” Presented by former BBC and Granada journalist Paul Moulton, over 1.3 million minutes of video have been streamed from servers based at Manx Telecom’s Douglas data centre. The most watched video with over 10,000 views was the Hercules aircraft which recently landed at Ronaldsway carrying computer hardware for PokerStars, closely followed by the walk out to the Tower of Refuge, the Olympic Torch relay, water treatment problems and Olympic gold medalist Peter Kennaugh’s return to the Island. Later this year, MTTV reports will also be published through isleofman.com, the local directory and news website Manx Telecom acquired in March, further increasing the local and international distribution.

Tavish Scott, member of the Scottish Parliament for Shetland and Councillor Malcolm Bell, Convenor – Shetland Islands Council had travelled to the Isle of Man against the background of widespread debate about Scotland’s constitutional future. They had expressed a wish to learn from the Isle of Man’s experience as a Crown dependency and to study the legislative processes of Tynwald, in particular the practicalities of managing parliamentary business in a system where most elected members are independent. The visit was prompted by discussions between Mr Scott and the Speaker of the House of Keys Steve Rodan SHK while attending a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conference in Edinburgh earlier this year. Spread over a day and a half the programme saw the officials meet with Mr Rodan and the President of Tynwald Clare Christian MLC, attend sittings of the House of Keys and the Legislative Council and deliver a presentation to members on the Shetland Islands that included an account of the region’s successful wind farm project. Their visit also provided opportunities to meet with Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK, Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture Phil Gawne MHK, Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK, Treasury Minister Eddie Teare MHK and Mark Shimmin, chief financial officer to the Treasury. Mr Scott said: ‘At a time of intense debate about constitutional change for Scotland our approach is look at and learn from other jurisdictions such as the Isle of Man to identify how best to secure our future as islands. If we stand still, we shall get left behind.’ Mr Scott remarked on the ‘powerful evolutionary process’ of the Manx legislative system, in particular fiscal powers developed since the 1950s, while Councillor Bell remarked on the robust relationship established between the Isle of Man and UK central government that demonstrated how the Island was succeeding in ‘retaining and enhancing’ the means through which it was determining its economic future.

Eva Rose’s Garden, on behalf of Hospice Isle of Man is a local initiative which was set up after discussion between Hospice Isle of Man and the parents of baby Eva Rose Crossley. Eva passed away from a rare genetic disorder known as Trisomy 18 or Edwards Syndrome shortly after her birth in 2011, aged 9 weeks. The aim of the fundraising is to build a sensory garden within the grounds of Hospice Isle of Man which will add to the existing outdoor space and is to be enjoyed by both patients and their family and friends of Rebecca House and Hospice Isle of Man. The total amount raised by Abacus was an amazing £1,184.46 and was achieved through various fundraising activities including bake sales, raffles, staff salary donations and collection pots. Julie Crossley said: ‘I would like to personally thank everyone at Abacus for taking part in the fundraising events which saw them raise the staggering amount of £1,184.46 for Eva Rose’s Garden. Our initial target to create the garden was £20,000 and the generous amount donated by Abacus has helped us achieve our target and much more’. The garden will be a sensory garden with a children’s play area that will be used by the patients and their families and friends and shall be named after my daughter Eva Rose’. Abacus’ funds Managing Director Paul Kneen said: ‘I am extremely pleased to be presenting this cheque on behalf of Abacus to Mrs Crossley and the Eva Rose’s Garden Project. Fairbairn Private Bank becomes Nedbank Private Wealth

M

ultiple award-winning Fairbairn Private Bank has today announced it will be changing its name with immediate effect to Nedbank Private Wealth. Its Jersey-based Fairbairn Trust Limited, as well as its sister company, Fairbairn Trust Company in Guernsey, will become known as Nedgroup Trust. Together they form Nedbank Private Wealth’s international operations, under the Nedbank Private Wealth brand. Greg Horton, Fairbairn Private Bank’s managing director, now the managing director of Nedbank Private Wealth Limited, said: “We are sad to say farewell to the Fairbairn brand, which has held an excellent reputation within the wealth management arena, but are flattered to be branded in line with our longstanding shareholder, Nedbank, with its prominence of size and the success it has achieved in the financial services marketplace.” Horton went on to say: “Johannesburgbased Nedbank is the fourth largest bank in Africa which is owned by the well-known and highly regarded FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 financial services group, Old Mutual plc.” Nedbank’s current high net worth markets are serviced by BoE Private Clients (Board of Executors) in South Africa and by Fairbairn internationally. As part of Nedbank’s strategy, all these businesses are now aligned under the new Nedbank Private Wealth brand. Nedbank Private Wealth employs around 650 staff in six geographies and holds more than £7.5 billion assets under management and administration. Mr Horton said: “The Nedbank Group has been an outstanding supporter of our international operations and the new brand

86

will benefit from the collective strength and reputation of our businesses and a heritage that dates back to 1834 through BoE Private Clients.” Commenting on the launch of Nedbank Private Wealth, Nedbank’s CEO, Mike Brown, said: “Under the new brand, Nedbank Private Wealth will provide international and South African clients with world class, seamless international wealth management. Fairbairn’s international businesses and BoE Private Clients display a commitment to put their clients’ needs at the centre of everything they do, and I am particularly pleased to confirm that this will continue under the new name.” As Africa’s first carbon neutral financial services organisation, Nedbank has over 27,000 employees and market capitalisation of approximately £6 billion. It is completely untainted by the sub-prime and sovereign debt crisis which has crippled several US and European banks in recent years. The Global Competitiveness Report by the World Economic Forum 2012/2013 has ranked South Africa’s banking sector first for regulation of its securities exchange and first for the strength of its auditing and reporting standards. In addition, it was ranked as second, only behind Canada, for the soundness of its banks. In comparison, the US was ranked 80 out of the 144 countries surveyed this year. John Shimmin MHK, the Isle of Man Government’s Minister of Economic Development added: ‘Fairbairn Private Bank is to be congratulated on exploiting opportunities to expand whilst maintaining its impressive reputation in a global economic environment that has been on a steady decline over recent years. Its reports of growth, year on year, in these times of

austerity bodes well for its future under its new name of Nedbank Private Wealth. For our part, we appreciate having the Isle of Man Head office based in our own local economy which, although faring better than many other economies, still presents its own challenges. This is very much a commitment by the bank to its future on the Island. The model of continuing to grow its client facing offices internationally, whilst being supported from the Isle of Man, is a model which is fantastic for our Island and contributes to significant opportunities for our local economy.’ Fairbairn’s international businesses, located across six different jurisdictions – Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, the UK, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa - have received numerous accolades in recent years. “The change of name will enhance our strong standing internationally as we will be identified as being part of Nedbank, a highly successful banking group. Our personnel, core values, pioneering approach to product innovation and client service excellence will remain the same,” said Horton. He continued: “During these challenging financial times Nedbank Private Wealth can offer clients the comfort of knowing a bank and wealth manager who they can trust and know their total wealth is secure. Nedbank Private Wealth and Nedbank both maintain strong funding profiles and robust, well capitalised balance sheets free of toxic assets, strong levels of liquidity at all times and no direct exposure to the euro-zone periphery countries.” Horton said: “The future certainly looks bright for the new Nedbank Private Wealth brand, of which we are proud to be a part.” isle of man premier magazine

Squeeze on consumer spending power deepens in the uk Real discretionary spending power growth fell to -0.9% in September as income growth dropped back into negative territory. On average, this equates to almost £8 a month less to spend on non-essential items. Annual income growth fell to its lowest level since December 2010 at 1.7%. In real terms annual income growth decreased to -1.2%. Annual growth in essential spending remained resilient, dropping 0.1 percentage point to 3.3% compared to August.

A

s we enter what will undoubtedly be a lively few months in terms of consumer spending, Lloyds TSB has released the 19th in its series of Spending Power Reports to provide an overview of consumer behaviour and sentiment during September. The Lloyds TSB Spending Power Report examines trends in consumers’ spending power, which is defined as income left after essential spending. Each month it covers both changes in actual spending power and in consumers’ perceptions, as well as recording how consumers are reacting to any changes in their own or the UK’s economy. The Spending Power Report measures payments into Lloyds TSB current accounts and subtracts essential spending – rent, mortgage and required debt payments, utility bills, council tax, TV licences, food and fuel. Additionally, over 2,000 consumers are asked about their current and future spending habits and how their commitments affect their spending power. Lloyds TSB is the largest provider of current accounts in the UK, thus providing a robust and representative sample of the entire UK market. Overall, results for September indicate that weak income growth continues to squeeze household budgets. Spending power growth dipped to its lowest level since April 2011 in September as income growth weakened following a resurgent August. The decrease means, once essential items had been paid for, people had around £100 less than a year ago to spend on nonessential items.

TSB’s Spending Power Report indicate that the underlying trend of squeezed household budgets remains. This recent volatility may in part be attributable to the mixed weather conditions and events over the summer months – such as the Queen’s Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympic Games – influencing consumer behaviour patterns, and is reflective of other economic data over this period displaying similar variance.

household bills spending, in particular, gas and electricity bills – where spending growth declined by 1.4 percentage points to 8%. People are now spending 3.3% more on essential items compared to the same time last year – the lowest growth rate seen in this measure since December 2011 – while their reported average monthly grocery spend fell back to £269 in September compared to £273 in August.

At 1.7%, income growth would appear to be the key driver behind the weakness in spending power during September. Incomes grew at the weakest rate since December 2010, and some way off the pace seen towards the second half of last year. At the same time, there was little change to essential spending growth during the month compared to August as the growth in spending on automotive fuel (2.5% in September compared to 0.7% in August) was offset by a continued decline in the growth of

Data from August had suggested that the pressure on consumer spending power might have eased somewhat year-on-year, however the latest figures from Lloyds

Squeeze on consumer spending power deepens in the uk

Spending power growth dropped back into negative territory in September as households continued to experience a significant squeeze on budgets. Lower inflation levels would appear to be struggling to filter through into consumers’ daily lives and weak income growth means many are still struggling to meet monthly outgoings. By contrast, consumer sentiment towards their own finances saw some signs of improvement in September, suggesting that people are still finding reason for optimism.

Commenting on the findings, Patrick Foley, chief economist at Lloyds TSB, said: “Despite the volatility in the data, it is clear that the underlying trend in real incomes is negative despite the fall in inflation from last year’s high. I expect inflation to fall only slightly further over the coming months so any improvement in the situation will need to be driven by growth in incomes and this will depend on the wider economy. The pattern of consumers following rather than driving economic developments appears set to continue.” Sentiment towards the UK’s economic situation declines… In line with spending data showing little reason for consumers to be cheerful in September, sentiment towards the UK’s economic situation also declined during the month despite official figures showing the economy shrank by less than thought in the second quarter of the year. The proportion who felt the UK’s situation was ‘not at all good’ increased by three percentage points from 42% in August to 45% in September, however this is an improvement of four percentage points when compared to the same time last year.

Despite greater pressure on household budgets in September, however, consumer sentiment towards their personal financial situation remained surprisingly buoyant during the month. 51% believe their personal situation to currently be ‘somewhat good’ to ‘excellent’ while, overall, consumers are generally feeling more comfortable with regards to their finances compared to 12 months ago. Over this period there has been a 6 percentage point reduction in the number of consumers who feel that money is tight or who don’t have enough to meet their monthly outgoings. This year-on-year change has been driven by a more positive opinion amongst people

88

aged 18-34, with the proportion who feel that money is tight or that they don’t have enough to cover essentials falling by 11 percentage points to 48%. Saving remains the dominant behaviour for those with discretionary income with 55% stating that they are likely to save any money left over at the end of the month. This measure has varied over the course of 2012 between 55% and 59%. Looking to the future, pessimism with regard to discretionary income in six months’ time continues to decline. While still in negative territory, the balance of opinion (the difference between those saying they will have more minus those saying they will have less) moved from -4% to -3% in September. Since January 2012, the balance of opinion has increased by three percentage points, while over the past 12 months there has been a marked improvement of 10 percentage points. Jatin Patel, director of current accounts for Lloyds TSB, comments: “Spending power growth dropped back into negative territory in September as households continued to experience a significant squeeze on budgets. Lower inflation levels would appear to be struggling to filter through into consumers’ daily lives and weak income growth means many are still struggling to meet monthly outgoings. By contrast, consumer sentiment towards their own finances saw some signs of improvement in September, suggesting that people are still finding reason for optimism.” The UK has experienced a less than ideal economic environment overall over the past few months, however, it would appear that the Isle of Man has had much less cause for concern in terms of both economic output and consumer behaviours. Commenting on how UK household finances relate to those on the Island, Mr Trevor Kirk, Head of Isle of Man Corporate Banking at Lloyds TSB, fostered a significantly more confident outlook: “In the UK, consumers are suggesting that although there has not been an increase in their spending power, their sentiment towards their personal finances is improving. Interestingly, it would seem that such optimism is largely being driven

isle of man premier magazine

business

by the fact that required debt repayment commitments have been falling. This is largely due to people deciding to repay borrowing and not take on new borrowing; perhaps keeping a car that they would have otherwise changed more quickly. We certainly saw a fall off in demand for credit here initially, although that has since returned strongly, which reflects the confidence of consumers here on the Island.” “The UK has seen inflation falling, as we have, and this should go some way to improving the situation for consumers in terms of the amount of money people have left over for discretionary spending purposes and will help aid the recovery of our retail, leisure, tourism and hospitality sectors.” “As a final note, it is also important to consider that, because we rely on the UK media to a great extent, some people’s optimism is tempered by the sufferings of our close trading partner. It is inevitable that we catch some of the UK media’s portrayal of what’s happening in the UK economy and often forget that we’ve actually a much stronger economy. It is, therefore, important to remember that although some will inevitably feel the pinch precipitated by the UK’s still weak economic condition, the Island continues to occupy a relatively privileged position and enjoys a growing and increasingly diverse economy. That, in my opinion, is a definite cause for optimism.”

COLLEAGUES CELEBRATE STRING OF PROMOTIONS

KPMG ANNOUNCES TAX MANAGER PROMOTION

KPMG Isle of Man has announced five promotions within the firm’s audit department. The promotions see two current members of the management team become senior managers and the appointment of three new audit managers. This complements KPMG’s recent intake of five new ACA students in audit and a graduate in tax.

KPMG Isle of Man is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Cawley to the position of Manager within its tax department. Having spent 5 years as both a VAT and Customs and International Trade Officer with Isle of Man Customs & Excise, Paul joined KPMG in March 2010 as a Senior Consultant with the company’s taxation department. Paul has since become a highly valued member of the team, cultivating a broad knowledge of indirect tax matters and providing advisory services to a client portfolio, spanning the property, aviation, funds, financial services, gaming, international services and import/export industries.

Kerry Fenna has been appointed to the position of Senior Manager having been with KPMG IOM for seventeen years and an audit manager for the last seven. Kerry spent three years in Australia on secondment to the Real Estate Audit Department of the KPMG Sydney office, returning to KPMG IOM in 2011. Jenny Trimble joined KPMG in 2003 as a graduate trainee and became a manager in 2008. Jenny works in both the audit and advisory service lines with responsibility for the internal audit division and has also recently spent time in the British Virgin Islands office of KPMG leading a HR Advisory project. Jenny has also been appointed to the position of Senior Manager. David Maddrell has been promoted to Manager and has been with KPMG since March 2006, joining as a trainee. He has since spent time working across the KPMG service lines and has developed considerable expertise in such areas as transaction services, internal audit, accounting and external audit. Sachet Baniya joined KPMG in 2007 as a graduate in-take. During this time, Sachet has been involved in audits in various industry sectors, including eGaming, captive insurance, wealth management and public sector. Sachet is responsible for managing the majority of eGaming clients for KPMG Isle of Man having gained experience in this industry. Steven Hannah recently joined KPMG after moving from another audit firm on the Island where he had previously also held the position of manager. He has 6 years’ audit experience across a range of sectors including AIM listed funds, investment management, banking, eGaming and insurance.

Paul will be looking to further develop KPMG’s tax offerings including in particular KPMG’s ‘Gatew@y to the EU’, an initiative which provides trading companies with a tax efficient EU import solution from which to manage the entry of goods into the EU market place. Greg Jones, Director of Tax at KPMG Isle of Man, commented on the appointment: “Since joining us, Paul has added a great deal of value to the businesses of both KPMG and our clients. He is well regarded for his considerable VAT expertise and his promotion is in recognition of these achievements.” Paul also commented on the promotion: “I enjoy my role at KPMG immensely and I am fortunate to work with fantastic colleagues and a very interesting range of clients. Each year it is becoming increasingly important for businesses to understand the VAT and duty issues which affect them and to ensure their compliance. Advising our clients on these matters is challenging and something that I enjoy very much.”

Meet the Dealer www.barrycurran.com

What’s the scope of services that you offer?

Full name? Anthony Palfreman - Operations Manager. The Business? Barry Curran. So, give us a bit of background about Barry Curran, when did the business begin? Barry started the business in Ramsey in 1998, shortly afterwards acquiring the Hyundai Franchise and lately the Subaru franchise, the business then moved from Ramsey to Douglas. The last year has seen some exciting changes to the business hasn’t it? Yes, we’ve moved the whole business to purpose built facilities on Cooil Road, between B&Q and Eden Park. All sales and after-sales operations now operate from the same location, offering customers a one-stop shop. We have expanded on our All Makes service facilities and offer a wider range of services for any make/model of car. Ofcourse, location is everything: The new site offers great parking facilities and the layout is such that we can display an even bigger range of cars. Tell us about the Club Service 360? Club Service 360 is a monthly service plan with a whole range of additional benefits. Its available for any make of car, whether it was purchased from ourselves or not, with low monthly interest free payments adding up to cost-effective trouble-free motoring. Are you selective in the make of cars that you sell? Not at all, we offer probably the widest selection of car makes on the Island: From a cheap runaround to £35,000 plus. We also offer a search-and-select facility, so if we haven’t got a car to meet your specific requirements we will find it for you.

92

Apart from car sales, we offer a full range of after- sales services, including routine servicing and repairs for all makes of vehicles. Also, our franchise partnership allows us to sell quality tyres at extremely competitive prices. Not forgetting air-conditioning top-ups and an extensive range of valeting services. Where do you see the business going in the future? We are determined not to stand still. Our future plans for the business stand firmly around expanding the range of services that we offer to our customers, both the sales and the after-sales aspects of the business: watch this space... What’s the hardest lesson you’ve learnt at Barry Curran? No real hard lessons, I have an open and forward-thinking mind. In this job, like most, we are always learning. I learnt years ago not to be afraid of making hard decisions. Do you have any funny Barry Curran stories? Yes. A couple of real funny ones, but they will appear in my memoir - if I get around to writing it. Now time to find out about you… What was your first car? A 1971 Austin 1100 hand-me-down. What got you into the Motor Industry? A mistake! Ha Ha! I helped install a dealer management system at a local parts operation - as computers were my thing - and forgot to leave. I guess I enjoyed it too much. What’s the furthest you’ve driven in one go? To where? And for what reason? I drove from Kendal to London and back on the same day to go to a Cup Final! isle of man premier magazine

Speed check: Are you a fast driver? What’s the fastest you’ve ever driven or ridden at?

If your house was on fire and you could only take one thing with you, what would it be?

155mph in a Lotus Esprit. It was some years ago now on the motorway across. very naughty.

Obviously, excluding loved ones, it would be my Ibanez Bass Guitar. So much history together (and stories! Ha Ha!)

Two wheels, four wheels or more wheels? Why?

Any future plans for Barry Curran?

Both really, I used to ride two wheelers (Trial Bikes) and wouldn’t mind a bike again. I passed my bike test on my 16th Birthday.

Lots, as I said earlier, watch this space and drop by the showroom sometime soon.

SHARING THE WANDERLUST Once upon a time, not that long ago, one of the most important items on a traveller’s packing list would have been a camera, along with rolls, and rolls, of camera film. Back then using a camera to document your travels was a risky business. What if you didn’t get any decent shots? What if you lost a roll of film? Those precious travel memories could so easily be destroyed. How times have changed. Today it’s easy to document and share your travel experience with anyone you choose. In fact, you don’t even need a camera…

GREAT PHONEOGRAPHY WEBSITES

Phoneography, or the Apple version, iPhoneography, is the art of shooting, processing and sharing photographs with a mobile phone. The image quality and resolution achievable with a camera phone has improved dramatically and this, combined with the availability of hundreds of photography applications (known as ‘apps’), has seen the phoneography trend grow rapidly. Even professional photographers, who generally weren’t early adopters of phoneography, appear to be embracing it’s potential. Phoneography has a number of advantages over regular photography, particularly for travellers. A mobile phone takes up considerably less room than a DSLR camera, lenses, tripod and other photography equipment. Also, photographs can be shared at the touch of a button with social networks, including photography-specific websites such as Flickr and Photobucket. Photography apps enable users to edit their photographs extensively and apply a wide variety of filters and frames. So your travel snaps aren’t just easy to share; they look good too!

Die-hard photography fans might argue that phoneography, in particular, apps such as Instagram, are the death of real photography. I disagree. Phoneography and apps are just additional tools for the hobbyist, and professional, photographer. What is the point of taking a beautiful photograph, capturing everything that was special about your travel experience, if nobody else sees it? Through phoneography, apps and social media, you can share your travel experience, in real-time, with whomever you like.

YE OLDE GADGETS

WANDERING WONDERS

GOPRO HERO3

The new line of GoPro cameras are slicker and smaller and smarter than the last, with prices ranging between $199.99 and $399.99. There are three models in the new range, Silver, White and Black (they’re all the same colour, confusing I know), and the Silver and White versions both sport the same 1080p camera with 30fps video. The newest addition to the Hero3 is the 4K video on the Black edition. This is a new level of quality, seen only on the newest technology. This does mean, however, by using 4K you’re in fact putting yourself ahead of the game, reducing video quality on computers and laptops that can’t handle the “higher-thanHD” frames. All very technical. For more information, visit gopro.com/hd-hero3cameras.

STERIPEN TRAVELLER Illness. The time when all you want is to lie in your bed and, if you’re a real man, complain to everyone that you have some life threatening disease called rhinopharyngitis (the common cold). However, find yourself struck down by a bacterial infection from dirty water in the middle of Thailand and it won’t be bed you’re begging for. With miles to the nearest hospital and fluids coming of both ends like an eruption at Krakatoa, you’ll be cursing the little sod that sold you that curiously cheap bottle of “Evien”. That’s where the Steripen Traveller Mini comes in. Hold the pen-sized end in any water for just 48 seconds and it uses UV rays to kill any bacteria that would have quite literally caused a shit-storm. Very handy if you don’t fancy forking out on the travel insurance to pay a doctor that takes three goes to find the “wein” in your arm.

SHINING IN THE RAIN

STAY SEEN DURING THE DARK MONTHS WITH THE VIEW QUEST ELLA-ELLA LED UMBRELLA. No longer is an umbrella [avoid terrible Rihanna-related pun here, despite the product name] merely for keeping you dry - this stalwart stormproofer has LEDs in the shaft that allow it to glow in 6 different colours, which is sure to brighten up your day! There’s also a powerful torch in the base so it’s not all about play; Ella-ella has a sensible side too.

PRO SKI SIMULATOR For those who, for some reason, don’t want to hit the slopes this season, but still want a (nearly) identical experience, there is the Pr Ski Simulator. You may not get the snow, the fresh mountain air, the companionship of sharing a chalet or the joyous first sip of a heart-warming vin chaud in that welcoming mountaintop bar, but you can certainly get the knee strain that skiers feel in the comfort of your own home.

SHARP AQUOS BOARD With the iPad revolution of the last few years, any touch screen tablet without an apple on the back has become practically obsolete. However, when it comes to business, a small display just isn’t enough to show off your new and innovative ideas to the potential investors from China. That’s where the Aquos Board comes in. With an 80inch display, and running Windows, this amazing machine connects to a printer to let you print any changes you make to those vital business documents. The touch screen allows you to doodle, sketch and tap to your heart’s content, and with a 1080p display it doesn’t have to be all business. Movies and gaming are a perfect way to pass the time between the meetings and conference calls.

96

hardware_gadgets.indd 126-127

Whether you’re preparing for the season, or imagining yourself on the slopes in mid December, this is a great way to train, with “the best ski carving simulation possible” that will help with balance, coordination, and, according to the website, reflexes. There are three models, the basic, standard and professional, that all come with a workout DVD (the machine seems pretty limited, a DVD may not be necessary). So if you fancy the skiing experience without all the hassle of travel and expenses, this seems like the ideal machine, as long as you have a pretty vivid imagination to picture yourself darting between moguls and other skiers. At £1559.56, this machine, which costs more than a skiing holiday, is a great way to get in shape when your foolish friends are off gallivanting in the Alps.

BEHRINGER INUKE BOOM Prepare yourselves, music lovers, for the iPod dock that will put any sub-woofer, amplifier or speaker you can find to shame. This behemoth, producing 10,000W of audio power that will quite literally pummel your brain into the back of your skull, is 8ft wide and 4ft high, and weighs in at 318kg. It’s not exactly the most practical gadget on our list, but it is without doubt the loudest. Warning, if you want to stay friends with your neighbours, this product is not advised.

CONTENT WITH YOUR TV EXPERIENCE? ARE YOU SURE?

IF YOU’VE EVER FELT THAT YOU’RE MISSING OUT WHEN IT COMES TO SITTING IN FRONT OF THE BOX, THEN SURE HAVE A NEW BOX FOR YOU TO ADD TO YOUR HOME ENTERTAINMENT COLLECTION. If you’ve ever pined for the elusive channels that Freeview can’t provide locally such as ITV4, Five USA, CITV and a host of radio stations as well as a handful of other locally-specific content such as up to date weather and tide tables as well as access to webcams across the islands. Fancy checking the surf? Wondering if now would be a good time to miss the rush in town? It’s all on your telly. SureTV also enables you to view online, on demand services through your big screen too, as well as pausing, rewinding and fast forwarding (where applicable; time travel is not one of SureTV’s features I’m afraid, so you still can’t see the end of a programme before it has been broadcast, obviously) plus multi-room viewing on top of all of the Freeview channels you may or may not have already come to love. The onboard memory can store up to 160 hours of content, and what’s more there’s a smartphone app that allows you set your favourite programs to record on the go from anywhere, at any time.

YAMAHA FX NYTRO MTX SE 162 They told me think snowsports. They told me think wanderlust. I thought of the Yamaha FX Nytro MTX SE 162. It’s not your usual snow sport, probably because not everybody has $12,600 to throw around, but who hasn’t dreamed of bombing down a black run at what feels like 1000mph, laughing at the pathetic people using energy to get around. With adjustable suspension, riders can choose the stiffness of the ride, whether they want to be manoeuvring through woodland or mocking the fools in their freezing chairlifts. There’s not much else to say about this beautiful piece of engineering excellence, but there are only a few methods of travel that justify wearing all black ski-gear and pretending to be chased by bad guys with guns, and this is most certainly one of them.

Whether you’re already a Sure customer or not, they’ve got some fantastic deals that could see you taking home a SureTV box for just £59 and your monthly subscription to services for free! For example, if you take (or already subscrive to) broadband, mobile services and a landline from Sure then a SureTV subscription won’t cost you a penny, whereas if you choose to take 2 services it’ll only cost £6 per month, and if you just have a Sure boradband connection (which is required to use the SureTV service) then it’ll set you back £12 a month. Given the added value in these packages, we’d say that’s a pretty good deal for access to such a wealth of real-time and on demand content.

ADVENTURE MEDICAL KIT BY SOL ORIGIN For those of you who have seen the movie “Touching the Void”, you know that getting stuck in the mountains is far from a casual stroll in the park. Admittedly, skiing holidays are not exactly an ascent of Everest, and you’re quite likely to be found within an hour, but for those who feel they need one, the Adventure Medical Kit SOL Origin is one of the finest. With over 30 items including a no-fail sparker, super-bright LED torch, steel blade and GPS tracking, whatever situation you end up in you can guarantee that you’ll be able to fend off anything, whether it be polar bears or the rather irate family of the chalet you accidentally crash into when trying to ski home.

egway Tours, offer you a unique way to explore our beautiful Island and learn about some of our fascinating heritage in a fun cool way.
