edito Award winning conformity
I
t’s a trick isn’t it? When people say, ‘Oh, watch this movie, it’s award-winning, drink this award winning wine or eat at this award winning restaurant,’ what they really mean is; you must conform, you must like and watch all the same things as everybody else because we have told you to. Even normal randomers ‘award winning influencers,’ who like clothes are, ”collab-ing” with brands so we can be safe in the knowledge that we all shop in the same shops and come out looking the same. Never mind that a lot of Oscar winning films are self indulgent, worthy or just plain boring or that you may just risk picking your own restaurant to frequent, thanks all the same. I mean, seriously, is nobody capable of making their own decisions anymore? To be fair, if you were a massive moronic conformist you probably wouldn’t be reading these pages which are packed with individualism, bonhomie, sparkling repartee and local (but not local local) titbits for your amusement. We really don’t need any awards to show us how good we are, nothing to see here, not a single award. We don’t mind at all, who needs acknowledgment from peers or readers??! Glad we are all on the same self-assured, confident page here. Yes, totally. No doubt about it. Now, obviously we are not telling you what to do but if you do happen to find yourself at a lose end this November, once you have avoided being told where to eat, what to wear, drink and watch then you might want to partake in some of these activities. Or not, its’ a free country afterall! You could, if you wanted, take in the Pokerstarts Rally on the 8/9th or even see Squeeze in concert on 22nd November. If it is more fireworks you’re after then you could try the Post Erin Fireworks Display, we hear they might even be award winning. In the meantime, relax and have a great month and try to take a breather in this small window between pumpkins and presents! SR

OUR COMMUNITY
GIVE HOLIDAY COTTAGE COMPANY RAISES £1000 FOR THE MANX WILDLIFE TRUST Local holiday company Island Escapes is pleased to announce it has raised £1000 for Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT) through its initiative to ask its customers for an optional £3 donation when booking one of its holiday cottages on the Isle of Man. Managing Director of Island Escapes John Keggin said: “As a socially responsible company and proud biosphere partner we chose Manx Wildlife Trust as our charity for 2019. Many of our visitors enjoy the nature reserves and the events held year round and we wanted to help support the good work of the trust”.
TEAM ‘NEED FOR SEED’ RAISES OVER £900 FOR BIRD CHARITY An Isle of Man couple who gave wings to an old banger have raised more than £900 for Manx Wild Bird Aid (MWBA). MWBA volunteer Paige Havlin and her fiancé Charlie Shimmins spent £250 on a 2002 Seat Ibiza to enter the Motoscape Rally as team ‘Need for Seed’, which took them through 12 countries in seven days – a journey of over 2,500km from northern France to Prague in the Czech Republic. They painted and stuck leaves to the vehicle, which also bore an Isle of Man Steam Packet Company logo, in recognition of the travel support they received from the company.
263 guest bookings opted in for the £3 donation, raising £789 for the year to date. Island Escapes have rounded that figure up to make a total of £1000. John added “As we head towards the 2020 season, we have decided to continue this partnership into next year. With new properties in our portfolio and visitor numbers on the rise, we are confident we can push the amount raised up further again during 2020.”
Tim Graham, CEO of MWT said “We are delighted that Island Escapes selected MWT as their chosen charity and have managed to raise so much money. It’s heartening to see such a large number of people have opted to pay just a little extra in order to help protect Manx wildlife for the future. We are always keen to explore relationships with Isle of Man businesses, especially if it benefits both parties like this.”
Manx Wild Bird Aid is a charity concerned with the day-to-day rescue and rehabilitation of birds in the Island. This year alone, volunteers have dealt with over 1,000 animals. Paige – who runs the stamp and coin collection – said: ‘The money we have raised will go a long way in helping the charity assisting any birds in need. As well as the money we raised through sponsorship, we received £150 for finishing in second place! Although the car was struggling towards the end, it has been donated to a local animal rescue centre in Prague, and we’re hoping it can be used to raise some funds there. ‘We’re very grateful to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for supporting our travel to get the car to the UK, as well as Quayside Tyre and Service Centre, for giving the car a free service before the rally got underway.’

MANX MSA TRUST’S SUMMER BALL RAISES £28,000 The Manx MSA Trust, a locally registered charity, raised an amazing £28,000 at their annual Summer Ball, held at the Palace Hotel & Casino. Almost 200 guests, enjoyed a great night of music from crooner Adam Parker-Brown, as well as the chance to bid on fantastic auction prizes. The charity was founded by Chris Blake in 2016, having been diagnosed with MSA (Multiple System Atrophy) at the age of 39, a life limiting neurological illness.
The key objectives for the charity are to support local patients and their families, raise awareness of the illness in the local medical profession and support research into finding a method of early diagnosis for patients, through a simple blood test. Niall Carey, Director, said “we are delighted that our Summer Ball has raised a superb amount again, for the fourth year running. All of the funds raised will go towards our three key objectives. We have to thank all of our guests and sponsors who helped ensure the event was so successful”. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

SAMARITANS, NOT WHAT YOU MIGHT FIRST THINK. Through a large network of dedicated listening volunteers, Samaritans provides confidential emotional support to those in distress, despair, or feeling suicidal. With so many misconceptions surrounding its services and the support it offers, Isle of Man Samaritans is here to debunk some of those common myths and remind you that it is here, whatever it is you’re going through.
“I have to pick up the phone to talk to Samaritans”
Although the majority of people do choose to call Samaritans, some find it easier to talk using our text, email, face-to-face or letter service. The important thing is, if you’re struggling to cope you can talk to Samaritans in a way that works for you.
“I have to be suicidal to call Samaritans”
This is a common misconception of Samaritans that isn’t true. People get in touch with all sorts of concerns and problems, and regardless of feeling suicidal or just not yourself, we’re here to offer emotional support.
14
“My problems aren’t big enough to call Samaritans”
No matter how large or small the issue feels, you can get in touch about anything that’s troubling you. Whether it’s financial worries, relationship break-downs, work stress, loneliness or you’re just feeling inexplicably low – Samaritans volunteers are here to listen.
“They will judge me and try to tell me what to do” Samaritans volunteers do not give advice and won’t tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. They listen, with no judgement or pressure, letting you work through what is on your mind.
“I’ll get put through to someone in the Isle of Man and they’ll know who I am” Isle of Man Samaritans is only one branch of a much wider network in 201 locations. With more than 20,000 volunteers, you’re extremely unlikely to be put through to a local volunteer, and if you do, it’s completely confidential and anonymous and the volunteer won’t ask where you’re calling from. There is also the option to hang up and call again too – you’ll get through to someone new each time.
Samaritans offers confidential emotional support in person, by telephone, email and text and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is free and anonymous to call them on 116123 or you can email: jo@samaritans.org. It is also possible to have a face to face chat at Samaritans premises at 5 Victoria Place, Douglas. The opening hours are available on the Samaritans website. www.samaritans.org/branches/isle-ofman

Over 115,000 classic and vintage styled motorcyclists around the world suited-up in their smartest attire and united in the annual The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, with the aim of raising $7 Million USD for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health initiatives on behalf of official charity partner, the Movember Foundation. Said Karl Millar, the Isle of Man Event Organiser: “What better means to demonstrate our brotherly bond by supporting two charities - Men’s Mental Health and Prostate Cancer research by dressing dapper and raising funds! We are also delighted with RL360 as our Local Event Sponsor.” ‘RL360 is absolutely thrilled to sponsor the growing Isle of Man’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride,’ said RL360 Marketing Director Simon Barwell. ‘It’s a quirky, visually stunning event raising money for two amazing charities. Our Isle of Man riders will be joining others from across the world to ride dapper for men’s health.

EILEEN SCHAER’S ‘MYSTERIOUS DRAMAS’ UNFOLD IN PORT ST MARY An exhibition of new paintings from Island artist Eileen Schaer has just opened at Studio 42 in Port St Mary and if you’re hoping to buy one of these new gouache paintings you should get there soon – her last exhibition, ‘Painted Dreams’ in 2017, was a near sell-out. Words: Suzy Holland Images: Eileen Schaer and Eben Carswell. Portrait of Eileen by Deborah Turk.
But what can you expect from this new work? “My art comes from within, from feelings and emotions,” Eileen says, “and in a world dominated by mass production and mass consumption I hope my one-off paintings represent something a little more individual, a more independent spirit. The characters I paint can only be described as part of mysterious dramas which unfold in the imagination.” Whereas ‘Painted Dreams’ drew heavily on her visits to India these new paintings could be interpreted as more rooted in the Isle of Man – the land and sea feature heavily although not in a way you might expect, unless of course your dreams include riding on seagulls and exploring the undersea world from the back of a fish. But everyone’s dreams are particular to them and although Eileen is always being asked what her paintings mean she finds that impossible to answer. “I can’t even tell you their stories myself – dreams can be interpreted anyway you want, and whatever you, the person looking at the painting, want them to mean is the meaning!” Eileen began painting back in the 1970’s when she and her late husband David Fletcher lived in London. David was studying at the Royal College of Art and not to be left out, Eileen spent her time around some of the most important artists of the time, and haunting art galleries. It was only a matter of time before she picked up charcoal and paintbrush and her work

began to attract attention, exhibiting in the Royal Academy summer shows, and the Mall and Serpentine Galleries amongst others. In 1975 they moved to the Island, where David worked with Norman Sayle in the art department at what was then the Isle of Man College, and Eileen juggled bringing up their family with working on her own paintings, which have since appeared in solo and group exhibitions in most, if not all, of the Island’s galleries, in London and elsewhere. Examples of her work can be found in the Isle of Man Arts Council’s own collection, and in homes both on the Island and further afield. “Just as I can’t describe the meanings of my paintings, I can’t explain why so many people love them,” says Eileen, “but perhaps it is exactly that: there’s something indefinable which appeals to those who buy them, and that’s what matters.” Studio 42 owner Eben Carswell is delighted to be hosting this exhibition: “It’s 15 years since I took on Studio 42,” Eben says, “and as well as offering a bespoke framing service, I always hoped I’d be able to grow enough to encourage local artists to exhibit here in Port St Mary. Studio 42 may be small in size and humble in stature but it packs a high quality punch and to be able to show an artist of Eileen’s calibre, with her first exhibition for two years, is a great privilege which far exceeds where I hoped to reach when I first began”. When the exhibition opened a couple of weeks ago, the preview was packed with Eileen’s dedicated admirers and the island’s art cognoscenti but although many works sold that afternoon, you might still be lucky. And even if you’re not in the market to purchase, the exhibition is worth visiting just to see where Eileen’s vivid and extraordinary imagination has taken her.
‘An exhibition of recent paintings by Eileen Schaer’ is on at Studio 42, Bay View Road, Port St Mary now until December. Opening hours are Tuesday – Friday, 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am – 4pm (closed Sunday and Monday)

A
s we approach a new decade in business, the IoD in the North West is looking for the region’s top business leaders to step forward for the Director of the Year Awards 2020. Taking place in Manchester next year on 14 May, the prestigious awards which is in partnership with Kuits Solicitors will celebrate the incredible achievements of the North West’s men and women who are achieving great things in the region, as well as on the national and international stage. With categories including Director of the Year – Young, Director of the Year – Family which is sponsored this year by Crowe and Director of the Year – NonExecutive which is sponsored by RSM, the awards recognise the successes of the diverse commercial landscape which is driving our local economy and beyond. Zurich International takes home three industry awards

urich International is pleased to announce the company has won three awards at the recent International Investment Awards and International Adviser Global Financial Services Awards. The 20th International Investment Awards 2019 were held at Gibson Hall in London on October 16. Zurich International took home the accolades for Best International Pension Plan and Best International Life Group (Non-UK). In addition, the company was recognised as Highly Commended in the category of Best International Savings Plan. At the International Adviser Global Financial Services Awards, held

the following evening on October 17 at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House hotel in central London, Zurich International won the award for International Life Group of the Year (Non-UK). Peter Huber, CEO of Zurich International, said: “To win three prestigious industry awards is a fantastic achievement, and requires not only industry-leading products and services, but a committed and hardworking workforce. I’m very proud of the recognition we have received at both the International Investment Awards and International Adviser Global Financial Services Awards – congratulations to everyone involved.”
n the 17th October, KPMG Isle of Man hosted a morning briefing at the Sefton Hotel to update businesses on the changing financial reporting landscape. A mixture of speakers from KPMG discussed topics that included recent IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) implementation whilst also updating the attendees on the latest valuation guidance from IFRS 13 and IPEV, common tax issues, regulatory developments and corporate governance, Cyber risks and IT control environments, all in relation to financial statements preparation. “The financial reporting environment continues to shift at pace, with a significant focus on increased transparency
and compliance of accounts in respect of risks and uncertainties, judgements and estimation and accountability to stakeholders”, said Nick Quayle, Partner and Head of Audit at KPMG Isle of Man. Another important change that will affect local businesses is IFRS 16 Leases. “IFRS 16 replaces existing lease guidance and is effective for annual periods beginning on or after 1 January 2019. IFRS 16 removes the concept of operating (“off balance sheet”) and finance (“on balance sheet”) leases for lessees and replaces it with a single, on-balance sheet lease accounting model. This represents a significant change for lessees’ financial statements”, said Ed Houghton, Audit Director at KPMG Isle of Man.

Chartwell: financial planning for the future
W
hen you think of wealth and success, what image does it conjure? A black Amex card? A private jet? A financial planner? While the first two hold a rightful place in the purview of the financial elite, it’s a common misconception that only the super-wealthy can afford someone to look after their cash.
“Money itself does not make us happy; it is how we use it that matters”
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Hazel Jordan & Jo Dugdale
Unlike a private jet, we all have money, even if we don’t feel like we have a lot of it, so getting the advice of a professional shouldn’t be reserved for those with a Coutts account or equivalent. Chartwell was formed just over five months ago by Jo Dugdale & Hazel Jordan. Its ethos is to make financial planning accessible to all – not only to high-net-worth individuals – and where Chartwell excels is its modern, personable approach that sheds the image of corporate stuffiness that can alienate those who would contemplate contacting a financial planner. “We all have different goals in life,” says Jo, who has worked in financial services for over 25 years, “but the one goal we have in common is the desire to prepare well for the future, be financially secure, and live our best possible life.” “As we get older, we focus more on how to achieve this with what we’ve got, but it’s a difficult place to know where to start. Everyone can benefit from financial planning and advice. It’s about finding out what makes you happy, what you value, what you fear, and what financial wellbeing means to you.” Having more money coming in than that of your base expenses is the perfect time to seek advice on how to save and spend, as it’s an excellent time to work with someone who can give you objective guidance and direction about how best to allocate that money to achieve what’s most important to you. Jo recognises that no one really wants a ‘pension’, but that they want to be able to live a life they enjoy, without worrying
about money. Lifestyle cash flow planning is the most powerful tool available to allow you to do this and take control of your future. Chartwell helps to map out the years ahead, forecasting your financial future and considering how it can be improved in line with your objectives. All with a click of a button. They can then create a workable and dynamic plan to get you there whether your key concern is to protect the value of your business, planning for retirement, or whether you at retirement and just need the confidence to know you ‘have enough’. They ultimately guide you through the whole process and continue to do so through the years. The financial advice profession is changing, and it’s exciting: not just for clients but for advisers too. Jo has joined the Institute of Financial Wellbeing, which has been created based on the idea that ‘money itself does not make us happy; it is how we use it that matters.’ “Watching clients’ concerns melt away or their eyes light up at life’s possibilities is extremely rewarding.” It’s this understanding of clientele that so perfectly captures Chartwell’s ethos of tailored, customised advice, taking the time to understand every client with approachability and care, irrespective of their financial health. Getting the right advice today could change your life, now and in the future. Your financial plan starts with a simple, nocommitment conversation. NO MATTER WHAT YOUR TASTE, WE TRULY BELIEVE THAT WE HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AND WITH OVER 850 DIFFERENT LINES OF WINE FROM £5 PER BOTTLE TO £200 PER BOTTLE (AND BEYOND FOR THE DISCERNING CUSTOMER) INCLUDING VEGETARIAN, VEGAN, ORGANIC, BIODYNAMIC, GLUTEN FREE, LOW SULPHITE, LOW ALCOHOLIC AND NON-ALCOHOLIC IF THERE IS SOMETHING THAT WE DON’T HAVE, WE WILL FIND IT FOR YOU! AS WINE SPECIALISTS WE KNOW THAT VALUE DOES NOT HAVE TO COME WITH AN EXORBITANT PRICE TAG AND THERE IS GREAT VALUE TO BE HAD AT EVERY PRICE POINT. EACH WINE THAT JOINS OUR RANGE IS TASTED BY OUR TEAM BEFORE WE AGREE TO STOCK IT, WHICH MEANS THAT YOU CAN BUY WITH CONFIDENCE, WHETHER FOR YOURSELF, FOR AN EVENT OR FOR A GIFT.
To demonstrate, here are our Top 10 under £10… “No Stone Unturned” is an Australian blend of Semillon and Chardonnay. Honeyed and exotic with a citrus lift full of ripe apricots and mandarin fruit that pairs fish, rich white meats or spicy dishes incredibly well. Pinot Grigio might be everywhere and the go-to low risk choice when ordering from a wine list but finding a good one is not quite so easy. Whilst there are some excellent Italian examples, one of our absolute current favourites is Calusari Pinot Grigio from Romania – packed full of fruit with citrusy acidity, it really is a cut above and stands out from the crowd. A white for any occasion! One of the most popular styles of white wine remains New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Cloud Factory from Marlborough is a ripe and tropical wine bursting with lime, gooseberry, pineapple, peaches and passionfruit. Try with goats cheese for a truly decadent food match. From South Africa, Percheron Chenin Blanc Viognier blend brings a previously under-appreciated
workhorse of a wine into the spotlight and has been enjoying great popularity with our customers. Ripe, juicy and plentiful with peach, pear and apricot fruit. Garlic and chilli prawns really set this wine alight! Argentinian Malbec exploded onto the scene a few years ago and shows no sign of slowing down in popularity. Our pick is the Finca La Florencia from Mendoza. An iron fist in a velvet glove, this wine balances power and intensity with finesse. Violets, blackcurrants, damsons and peppery spice make for a sumptuous red with a rich, lingering finish. You simply must try this with a steak. Finding a great Merlot that is true to the classic style is increasingly difficult. Great Merlot should be lush, plummy, velvety and above all quaffable. Camino de la Cabana Merlot from Chile is just such a wine; a juicy red brimming with plum, blackcurrant and cranberry fruit. Very easy
Words by the team at The Wine Cellar drinking - the any occasion red. Portuguese wine remains a relative newcomer. Skilled winemakers have recently been elevating the quality of these wines but whilst they are gaining our attention they represent incredibly good value. Alianca Bairrada Reserva is a blend of indigenous Portuguese grapes delivering something in between a Merlot and a Rioja in style. Vibrant with plums and red cherries, subtle spice and some rich earthy notes great with lamb. Chianti may have dwindled in acclaim in recent years however it remains one of the best reds for food matching. Uggiano Chianti Riserva “Roccialta” is superb in quality, flavour and price. The very definition of silky smooth, this generous red wine has black cherries, ripe plums and berry fruits and truly shines alongside fine Italian fare. Provence rose remains the most fashionable style of rose at present and we have a great example at under £10. La Grande Plage blends Grenache with Cinsault giving a textured blend of rich currents, tangy raspberry and spice. A perfect rose to match with food. And finally, the bubbles. Prosecco continues to go from strength to strength and our Martinotti Prosecco Spumante Brut NV offers pear, melon, citrus, grape and green apple fruit. One glass of this is never enough and the bottle is pretty smart to boot – great value at a great price! So, there you have it our Top 10 under £10 - the wines that no fridge or wine rack should be without. Of course, there are many more great value wines in the shop, these are just some of our favourites. Try them for yourself and if there are any other wines in our range that you feel deserve a special mention please do let us know. Great value? We’ll drink to that!

RECIPE TO TRY AT HOME HOW TO MAKE ANTONI POROWSKI’S HANGER STEAK WITH CHARRED LIMES, FRESH CHILLIES AND HERBS
Method: 1. Squeeze two teaspoons juice from one of the lime halves. Put the juice in a bowl and stir in the shallot and a teaspoon salt. Set aside. 2. In a large bowl, mix together the garlic, ginger and one tablespoon of the oil. Add the steak and turn to coat. Let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Heat a lightly oiled gas or charcoal grill to high or heat in an oiled griddle pan over high heat. (On a charcoal grill, most of the coals should be covered with white ash, and you should be able to hold your palm 2.55cm above the cooking grate for no more than two to three seconds.) 4. Brush the cut sides of the remaining lime halves with a total of one and a half teaspoons of oil and season with a generous pinch each of salt and pepper. 5. Scrape the marinade from the steak and season with one-and-a-quarter teaspoons of salt and half-a-teaspoon of pepper. Grill the steak, turning once, until nicely charred, four to five minutes per side. (Go for 55°C/130°F if you’re using an instantread thermometer to check doneness.) At the same time, grill the lime halves, cut side down, rotating them occasionally, until charred, about five minutes. Transfer the limes and steak to a cutting board and let rest for 15 minutes. 6. Stir the remaining two tablespoons oil into the shallot mixture.
STEAK NIGHT JUST GOT ZINGY.
“Hanger steak (also known as butcher’s steak) is relatively lean but packed with flavour,” explains Queer Eye’s quite wonderful Antoni Porowski. “Lime juice and a heap of mint and coriander leaves make the dish salady and satisfying, and give it an Asian twist.” Ingredients: (Serves 4) n 2 large limes, cut in half n 1 large shallot, thinly sliced (about 35g) n Salt
n 2 large garlic cloves, grated or finely chopped n 1 level tbsp peeled and grated fresh ginger n 3.5tbsp olive oil, plus more for brushing and grilling n 675 to 900g hanger steak, about 2.5cm thick, centre line of gristle removed n Freshly ground black pepper n 10g mixed fresh basil, mint and/or coriander leaves n 1 jalapeno, thinly sliced
7. Slice the steak crossways into 1cm thick pieces and arrange on a platter. Squeeze the grilled lime wedges over, then spoon the shallot vinaigrette on top. Top with the herbs and chilli.

LET IT SNOW Words Rebecca Evans
It’s official; after one last warm embrace at the end of September, summer has finally departed Europe and winter is galloping in. For many of us this means months of misery, punctuated only by the glittery explosion of Christmas, but for one particular group of people the arrival of dark nights and single figure temperatures means only one thing; the ski season is almost upon us! It’s time to drag those ski bags out of the attic, sharpen your edges, wax your board, dust off your goggles and head for the mountains….
BEST FOR FAMILIES : LA ROSIERE
Awarded the approved family friendly status of ‘Famille Plus Montagne’ by an association of French Tourist bodies, La Rosiere is a compact and pretty resort in the Savoie region of the French alps, around 2.5 hours from Geneva Airport. Over 160kms of ski area spills over into Italy, where more challenging runs can be found, but on the French side the resort offers long, wide and sweeping green and blue runs, perfect for beginners still finding their snow legs, and for young families who want to spend days on the slopes together. Sitting at 1850m in altitude, La Rosiere is more or less sure to have snow through until the Easter Holidays, long after lower resorts have been reduced to slush, and the majority of accommodation is ‘ski-in, ski-out’ which cuts down on Dad having to lug everyone’s hardware to and from the lifts on the daily.
56
Two dedicated skis schools in resort offer lessons from the smallest to the tallest in the family, with Evolution 2 catering for those in the middle with a Junior Academy aimed exclusively at adventurous teens looking for an introduction to off-piste riding and mountain safety. If a full week on planks is too much for the littlest of the party, Les Galopins Nursery Club has a great reputation for taking care of children from 18 months to 3 years and offers snowman building and sledging along with a range of fun indoor activities too. All this and a range of family friendly restaurants and activities to occupy everyone when the lifts have closed makes La Rosiere a (snow) sure choice for families. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

People often ask me - ‘Do you still do dentistry Tracey?’ The answer is of course I do….I never stopped.
Tracey Bell

It is a lifetime passion and to create smiles that function and are aesthetically pleasing is simply part and parcel of my life, everyday of it. The fascinating part of dentistry is it’s amazing advancements. With the advent of digital dentistry, whereby teeth and smiles can be designed by Cad-Cam and then printed in the surgery, life has become so much easier and of course risk to the patient has decreased. Years ago you would attend the practice have impressions taken and wait 2-4 weeks for the crown or denture to return. Now it is a case of a single visit, a digital scan (no impressions) and straight to the production of an accurate fitting crown, veneer and even denture. We, as a group, introduced digital dentistry in 2014 having spent 4 weeks learning all about it in Brazil. The learning curve was steep but on reflection it was the best thing we ever did. It made the process of communication with the patient easier i.e. n They were involved in the design n It made the appointment time minimal and so convenient for the patient n It eliminated the risk of the restorations not fitting All preparation and works are recorded, the crowns or prosthesis are immediate, and the accuracy of such machines is certainly better than any human hand.

On the island we have 3 practices that provide all types of dentistry, over time, we have all developed our own individual educational frameworks and pathways – continuing in the work that interests us. James (my partner at work and in life) has progressed his career in orthodontics and endodontics (the dreaded “root canal”.) This year he obtained a Merit in his Diploma of Endodontics at Chester University and completes his master’s in 2020. A situation he would never have imagined being in, but a challenge and experience he has loved. Again, with education comes knowledge and with that investment the practice has 2 microscopes used for root canal and its intricacies and all the equipment required to complete endodontics as it should be, complying with standards and guidelines. Back to braces – well you only have to take a look at his Instagram page and his patient testimonials will to see that James loves all types of orthodontics from fixed to removable appliances and from metal to ceramic braces. From providing and designing smiles we can now use digital technology to plan Invisalign, brace work and dental implants. When it comes to treatment planning. It is essential that any practitioner, obtains full informed consent from the patient. The patient then know’s exactely what they are letting themselves in for and has full autonomy in their decision making. As a patient this is what I would expect so therefore something that I and the practitioners want to deliver.
As I always say - “Do it once and do it properly” With that comes a lifetime of education, and investment not only in yourself as a practitioner but the practice and patients too.
Giovanni Marras
Giovanni has been on the island for 4 years and is here to stay, he is married and has just had a beautiful baby girl…Gulianna, born in October who is officially a ‘Little Manxie’.
Back to the question –‘So do you still do dentistry Tracey?’ – ‘Yes’ I’ve also honed my skills in Facial Aesthetics (since 2002). I obtained a MA in Dental Law Ethics (2016) and Graduate Diploma in Law (2019).
People ask ‘Why?’… Simple - Life! It is too short to waste and I want to live every minute. My law degree has found me entering a world of expert report writing, respecting autonomy of the patient and opening my eyes into what the patient should know, understand and what can happen if these basic aspects are ignored or forgotten. After practising for 28 years on the Isle of Man every year teaches me something new in dentistry, aesthetics, business and life – all I can say is its definitely getting better!

SKIRTS AREN’T JUST FOR SUMMER: THESE ARE SOME OF THE BEST STYLES TO WEAR THIS SEASON Leather
Leather skirts might seem like a risque option, but they’ve had a grown-up update this season. Don’t opt for anything mini or particularly flashy; the trend right now errs towards longer styles in autumnal muted tones. If you have ethical or environmental worries about leather, luckily most of the options on the high street are fake - which is also a lot easier on the wallet. If the weather’s chilly and you want a more relaxed vibe, layer with a chunky knit, but if you’re going out you could opt for a shirt and heels. n KLEY Dark Tan Faux Leather Knee Length Skirt, £55, Debenhams n Oasis Faux Leather Button Skirt, £33.60
Sensible skirts
Even though we all mourn the end of summer’s good weather, one of the best things about this time of year is not having to worry about shaving your legs. This doesn’t mean you have to banish skirts to the back of your wardrobe, as this season the trend is for extremely sensible styles that are so long they’re almost ankle-grazing. Full-coverage doesn’t have to mean boring - there are plenty of opportunities to play with materials and patterns here. Think of velvet skirts in deep berry hues, or indulge in some autumnal stripes. n Oasis Burgundy Velvet Bias Cut Skirt, £25.60 n Oliver Bonas Stripe Knitted Skirt, £55
Seventies styles
Peasant blouses, bell bottoms and flower power: The 1970s was a decade ripe for fashion inspiration. When it comes to skirts, Seventies styles are simple and easy to wear: Think A-line, shift styles with military detailing in the buttons and pockets. Many of these skirts are woollen or made of corduroy, which are stylish as well as being a bit warmer than your average chiffon skirt. n White Stuff Suki Textured Skirt, £65 n Laura Ashley Burnt Orange Boiled Wool A-Line Panel Skirt, £50 (was £35)
Tweed and tartan
Tweed and tartan styles are everywhere at the moment, and you can see why: What is more autumnal than a brown houndstooth pattern? If you want to really be on trend, wear these patterns in a high-waisted skirt, either opting for a slim-fitting mini or a flared knee-length silhouette. n Dorothy Perkins Blue And Yellow Check Print Mini Skirt, £26 n River Island Brown Check Button Front Paperbag Mini Skirt, £32 n Hobbs Verona Skirt, £103.20 (was £129)
