Doth thou sparkle too much?
I
guess if you were trying to imagine the “perfect” person, a small element of sparkle would probably be ok, a person with a certain something, an allure, a touch of charisma and a hint of mystery all go a long way to achieving some level of perfection. On the other hand, anyone who blatantly declares themselves as: “sparkly,” superconfident, life and soul of the party, fun-loving or hilarious prankster, then yip, you’ve guessed it; they are actually none of those things in reality. The thing is, you see, if you were really, genuinely, one of those things you would never even have to mention it because it would be just a natural part of you and you wouldn’t have to try so damn hard! Real, true sparkle appears in unlikely places. Like a slab of granite, it may appear grey and hard but when the sun hits it, it turns to sparkly silver. That, my friends is true mystery, hidden depth and extremely classy. Not that we would ever tell you what type of person you should be or aspire to be or admire because, as you know, we are fully inclusive and like you all. No need to take any offence, sparkly or otherwise, ok? All good here, no judgement! Also, who is to say what perfection is and if being perfect in every way really leads to happiness anyway. I mean, one person’s perfection could well be another person’s misery. Who says symmetrical facial features equate to happiness or if inner self peace and a state of nirvana are really all that they’re cracked up to be anyway? We for one, do not say any of this, we’re just casually opening up a thought provoking conversation in our own inimitable, clever little way. While we’re on the subject of classy and perfection, we at Gallery have kind of created the perfect magazine, we know how to do understated sparkle, as well as a whole lot of interest, we don’t need to try too hard because we’ve kind of already nailed it with the perfect combination of scrutiny, local business info, intriguing personalities, fashion, humour, property, opinion etc etc. but you know all this already, you never leave a page unturned, because, why would you? All our pages have a small element of tasteful, thought provoking, hilarious sparkle. You can thank us later. SR

WANT TO GET THE SPARKLE BACK IN YOUR LIFE?
THE 11 STAGES OF DE-CLUTTERING Because, it really shouldn’t be this hard to find a matching pair of shoes. Words by: Clare Bowie
Stage One: That’s it! It’s time to finally clear the junk out of your house. No more hoarding and cluttering, a chance to take control; be ruthless. This ‘definitive phase’ may last for approximately 6 months before you actually even open a cupboard but at least you’ve admitted there’s a problem and have good intentions about tackling it. #manana Stage Two: You watch the shows, you see the Marie Kondo, ‘konmari method’ and realise how simple it is. You can now devote the next few months to saving boxes in preparation. I mean, you would start immediately but it’s just not going to work without a variety of boxes and storage options. If only you had some space to keep those damn de-cluttering boxes! Stage Three: Another whole month slides by, because, you know, life happens. Then, one day, out of nowhere (or after 3 strong coffees) you take a sudden urge to start de-cluttering. Like housework, you know that when this unusual mood takes hold of you, you must just run with it. Do not over think it! Just get stuck in, before the moment passes. Stage Four: You become a power house of decisive clearing and ruthless abandon. You pull out all the jeans (seriously, how much denim have you been stock piling?). You try a few pairs on and immediately feel quite bad about yourself, your muffin top and general life decisions, so they go in the pile of ‘definitely no joy.’ Some of them (that you have absolutely no recollection of buying), actually look good and you feel
8
revived and full of recycling self praise. Stage Five: Next up, it’s time to cull the ‘aspirational clothes.’ Yes, you do mean that evening dress you bought in TK Maxx for the non-existent event that never popped up in your social calendar (same social calendar that involves approximately 2 annual barbecues and a handful of trips to the local bistro, none of which are black-tie). It may also be time to lose the 6 inch heels, the velvet cape and the lace miniskirt that you thought you might need some day when jeans and a Breton wouldn’t quite cut the mustard on the school run. Stage Six: Time to tackle your ‘adventurous clothing pile,’ and oh my, there are some questionable gems in there. That on-trend camo boiler suit is more “trainee plumber” than off-duty supermodel, the mom jeans that are themost unflattering thing you have ever worn and the cycling shorts??? (I think we all know the answer to that one). You might wish you were braver but the truth is, the grey, black and navy clothes are threadbare for a reason. Stage Seven: Repeat offending. It’s a tricky one but it may be time to scale back the plain white or plain black T-shirts pile. It appears that 37 of each hadn’t quite hit the spot for you and you may have a problem with buying really boring t-shirts. Next thing you know, you’ll only want ugly sensible shoes, coats with good hoods and trousers with stretchy elasticated waists. Watch out, it’s a slippery slope. You have to make some effort woman! Stage Eight: You can never have too many shoes, unless, you do in fact, have far too many shoes. You love a good bargain but really? Those red shoes that you loved 10 years ago but haven’t worn since, you could probably let them go
now. They did you proud, the heel height was perfect, you never tired of being called Dorothy, but now it’s time to say goodbye. They could really bring an outfit together in the Hospice charity shop window, rather than languishing in your wardrobe. Plus, obviously, you now have to buy new ones, duh, replacement time! Stage Nine: Bag lady. You’re not sure why but there was definitely a reason for your decision to keep ALL the bags that you’ve ever owned, yes, even the ones that you never used, never liked, gave you repetitive strain injury in your shoulder, always unbuttoned themselves, smelt funny in the rain, never fitted anything in, or slid off your shoulder at every given opportunity. And yet, here they all are. It’s time they met the big black bag. Stage Ten: You become a folder; you literally fold allthe clothes. Of course, this will never last and your drawers will look ransacked in no time but for now you’re going to give this a go. This business of keeping what you need and seeing exactly what you have is pure joy, just like the woman said! You even sleep better now that your room is organised, clear and free. Obviously the 16 black bags at the end of your bed aren’t an ideal scenario in the world of a clear mind but you’ve achieved enough for now. Stage Eleven: 2-4 weeks later seems like a good time to take those bags to the charity shop so you just pop them in the boot and will deffo drop them off some day this week. Some day this week turns into some day this month, which turns into some day this quarter. Then it gets colder and you know, that camo boiler suit may actually work under a darker coat so you just fish it out of the bag. Lo and behold there’s a bag and shoes in that bin liner that you think are making a comeback, and there may be a black tie event this winter, and...

KPMG PROMENADE RELAY RAISES OVER £10,000 FOR MANX DIABETIC GROUP The KPMG Promenade Relay 2019 took place on Marine Drive and the new location, combined with the beautiful weather, did not disappoint. A sunny evening and a great turnout resulted in a fantastic race, with 56 teams entering the event, representing a variety of businesses and groups across the island. This year’s event was held in support of Manx Diabetic Group, with the event raising over £10,000 for the Monitors4Kids campaign. Monitors4Kids is a parent-led campaign with the aim of raising money to end finger-prick blood testing in children, with newer, painless technology. Money raised from the campaign aims to provide children in the Isle of Man with sensors, which will enable monitoring of blood sugar levels on a mobile phone or handset – and alerts parents when levels dip dangerously low. All entry fees and any sponsorship raised by participants will be donated directly to the charity. The Wet Bandits were the victorious team, completing the 10k race in 32 minutes and 54 seconds and choosing to donate their winnings to Monitors4Kids and Hospice Isle of Man. Georgia Kenyon, Tax Manager at KPMG and on the event organising committee commented: “This year’s event has raised an amazing amount for Manx Diabetic Group, which would not have been possible without the support of the many people and businesses involved, including our sponsors, volunteers, marshals, St John Ambulance, Telecabs, Event Management Solutions, Manx Timing Solutions as well as the runners who took part in the event!”. Joanne Clague, Chair of Manx Diabetic Group, added: “Thanks to everybody at KPMG for raising such a magnificent amount of money for the Monitors4Kids campaign. To put it in perspective, this single donation will pay for an entire year’s worth of blood glucose sensors for five type 1 children in the Isle of Man. This technology makes a tremendous difference to local families, improving both the health and the quality of life of type 1 children and giving peace of mind to parents and carers. We’re so grateful to KPMG for helping us get closer to our goal of raising £120,000 over two years.”
10
KPMG is extremely grateful for the support of Baker Tilly, Barclays, Claremont Hotel, Estera, Equiom, Manx Telecom and Zedra for sponsoring this year’s event, as well as media partners 3FM and the KPMG staff involved in organising and marshalling the event. SAMARITANS ISLE OF MAN TACKLES SUICIDE HEAD-ON The Island’s local Samaritans branch has been given a funding boost as it works to tackle suicide prevention on the Isle of Man. A grant of £11,000 has been awarded to the charity by Manx Lottery Trust, which will be used to reach out to local people who are struggling emotionally and to let them know its volunteers are there for them should they need support, before they reach crisis point.
Lesley Moughtin from Samaritans Isle of Man said: ‘When a person on the Isle of Man makes the choice to end their life, it has a huge impact on our community and that pain is felt Island-wide. We believe that there are few local people who have not been touched by suicide in some way and we want to do what we can to stop people reaching a point where they feel it is their only option. Sarah Kelly, Chairman of Manx Lottery Trust, said: ‘Samaritans offers around-theclock non-judgemental support and is a lifeline to so many people in the Isle of Man and across the UK. We’re pleased to offer this grant to the Island’s branch so it can reach out to local people who need someone to talk to.’ ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

GIVE WIZARD DAY AT ROYAL MANX AGRICULTURAL SHOW RAISES MORE THAN £1000 FOR JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT More than £1000 was raised for Junior Achievement Isle of Man at the Royal Manx Agricultural Show after the Manx charity ran a series of potions classes inspired by the Harry Potter films. The event, sponsored by a number of local businesses including Auxesia, Baker Tilly IOM, Hartford Homes, Anglo Manx Trust Company, Itchyfeet Recruitment Agency, Lloyds Bank, The George A Moore Foundation (IOM), Robinson’s, Shoprite, SmartHR, Swagelok, Utmost Wealth Solutions and ELS, gave children the opportunity to take part in an interactive lesson in a large marquee with the help of a team of volunteers who donated their time to the charity. JA chief executive Sue Cook said: ‘The event proved to be hugely popular and despite the poor weather conditions we were delighted that it didn’t put off any wannabe-wizards. ‘The potions classes made for a fantastic family day out with many people entering into the spirit of things by coming dressed as their favourite character.
‘With all the events we stage we aim to offer a truly memorable experience. That wouldn’t be possible, though, without our team of enthusiastic volunteers and the generous support of many local businesses. We’re very grateful to everyone who made the day such a success and helped us to raise more than £1000 so that we can
continue to help young people in every primary and secondary school in the island make the connection between education and the world of work.’ To find out more about the work of Junior Achievement visit jaiom.im, contact Sue Cook, 666266, sue.cook@jaiom.im or follow juniorachievementisleofman on Facebook.
NEW FLOODLIGHTS FOR BOWLING CLUB THANKS TO MANX LOTTERY TRUST Manx Lottery Trust has awarded a grant of £4,000 to Onchan Crown Green Bowling Club, which will be used towards the installation of new LED floodlights in Onchan Park. Floodlights are essential for playing evening bowls and will allow the club to extend the season into the autumn. It also means it can host competitions at the 50th Anniversary 2019 Isle of Man September Bowling Festival, a huge event in the Crown Green Bowling calendar which attracts players from across the British Isles. The long-established club has around 80 members and seven teams, five men’s and two women’s, which consist of eight players who play around 150 games a year. These games are either held at Onchan Green or one of the other clubs across the Island. David Clucas, Treasurer from Onchan Crown Green Bowling Club, said: ‘The grant will not only allow more games to be played into the evening hours, but provide improved facilities for our current members and hopefully attract some new faces. The new lighting will make a huge difference at our club, particularly at the
14
bowling festivals held each year, and we are extremely grateful to the Manx Lottery Trust for making this happen.’

ABBEY DENTAL TAKES ON NEW DENTAL THERAPIST Abbey Dental, the family-run practice in Ballasalla has welcomed a new member to the team – dental hygiene therapist Charlotte Marshall.
The practice, opened by Mark and Tracie Hepworth in 2008, now has four dentists (Mark, Sita, Miles and Darren), five dental nurses and a dental hygiene therapist. This means they can offer a fully rounded dental treatment centre from preventative oral healthcare to a comprehensive range of modern aesthetic and general dentistry including tooth-like fillings, veneers, dental implants, whitening, minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics, such as the popular Invisalign teeth straightening service for adults and teens. Abbey Dental is committed to continuing dental education and keeping abreast of changes in modern dentistry. Everyone who works in the practice encourages preventative techniques - helping patients to understand how to maintain the health of their mouth and keep it free of tooth decay and gum disease. New member of the team Charlotte is from North Lincolnshire and studied at the University of Leeds, graduating with qualifications in Dental Hygiene and

Dental Therapy. She moved to the Island during summer and Gallery caught up with her for this issue. Gallery: Hi Charlotte, and welcome to the Isle of Man. Obviously we love it here, but what made you want to move? Charlotte Marshall: I was looking for a new challenge and had heard amazing things about the Isle of Man so when I saw the advert for the position at Abbey Dental I didn’t take much persuading. It helped that the ad included some stunning photographs of the Island, and when I came for the interview Tracie and Mark were really welcoming. They also took me on a wonderful tour of the South of the Island and it felt like a snapshot of various happy holidays I’d had across Britain as a child so I knew immediately that I’d be happy here – I’ve even persuaded my boyfriend to move over later this year! Gallery: Did you always want to be a dental therapist? CM: I have always wanted to work within dentistry. Even as a small child I loved visiting the dentist because she was so lovely and I wanted to be that person that someone would look forward to seeing. Gallery: Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does a detail therapist do? CM: Lots of people ask that! The best way to describe my role is as a key component in oral care. Modern dentistry isn’t just the person you see for your regular check-ups, it’s a whole team of professionals working together, and as a dental therapist I not only promote general oral hygiene and health but am also able to carry out a wide range of procedures including preventing and treating gum disease, applying sealants to reduce tooth decay and restoring and filling teeth. This variety means that the job is never boring! Gallery: Wow, that’s quite a role! What do you like best about your job? I love being able to give people the advice and tools to improve their own oral health and seeing how this can positively impact on other aspects of their lives. Watching my patients leave the surgery with beaming healthy smiles is reward in itself and it’s great to work as a valued member of the Abbey Dental team. As a dental therapist I’m able to provide a range of different treatments for adults and children, and I really enjoy making sure that visiting the dentist, however young or anxious the patient, is a routine part of general healthcare and not something to be worried about. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Charlotte Marshall Hygiene Therapist
Gallery: How do you do that? CM: Part of my training was about making dental care accessible for anyone who might shy away from treatment and I know that some people suffer from dental phobia or other concerns which stop them even making appointments. If that’s you, or one of your family, I’m trained to help and I approach all my patients with patience, understanding, and respect. Some people are nervous so I allow them to dictate the pace of their appointment with me, keep talking to them so that they know what I’m doing, and why, and check that they are comfortable. Even the little things make a huge difference, and no-one should be scared of visiting the dentist – that’s one thing I learnt in my training, and is at the centre of everything offered at Abbey Dental, and why I’m so excited about being part of the team. Gallery: You’ve not been in the Isle of Man very long, but have you managed to embrace all that the Island has to offer when you’re not at work?
Mark Hepworth Dentist
CM: I’ve been made very welcome by the team at Abbey Dental, and have made friends in and out of work. I enjoy socialising, eating out, going camping and exploring the great outdoors so I’m looking forward to discovering more than just the south of the Island in the months to come. Gallery: Thanks for your time Charlotte. You’re obviously a great addition and a great asset to the Abbey Dental team – they and your patients are lucky to have you.
If you’re a new or existing patient and would like to make an appointment with Abbey Dental, either with one of the dentists or with hygiene therapist Charlotte call 823040 or email abbeydental@manx.net.

DOUGLAS RUGBY CLUB LADIES DAY The 13th edition of the now infamous Ladies Day at Douglas rugby club was anything but unlucky for some. The veranda hosted ‘Serviettes Chaude’ courtesy of Michael Osbourne and Craig McGee, and club players kindly gave up their time for the F1-style ‘Mannequins Vivante’ contest where speed was vital. Club steward and hostess extraordinaire Anne Howarth served up a buffet fit for the occasion, photographer Richard Ebbutt captured the party in print, and to ensure fair play Eamon McGee adjudicated.

QUEENIE’S PLAICE: PEEL’S NEWEST ATTRACTION Words: Suzy Holland Images: Hazel Walsh, Steve Babbs (‘Ice Queen’ - Vida La Fierce)
What springs to mind when you think of Peel? A castle? Ice-cream? Kippers and queenies obviously, and lots of fish ‘n’ chip shops. But now there’s a new plaice (sorry) in town – the Island’s first and only Burlesque Lounge, Queenie’s Plaice. But you’ll have to be quick – it’s open for one night only at the Peel Centenary Centre on Saturday 5 October.
various incarnations for some years now – the ‘back by popular demand’ Evening of Burlesque at the Peel Centenary Centre last year was a two-night sell-out and the burlesque collaborations with drag star Vida La Fierce have received rave reviews. And now, for one night only, Fatal Fishnet Follies– with a full cast of 10 local performers – brings murder, music, and shimmering shoals (sorry, again) of glamour back to the Peel Centenary Centre.
Burlesque is a growing art form on the Island with a huge following. Queens & Tassels is the umbrella (or should that be twirling parasol?) for all things burlesque, with a little bit (actually a lot – these ladies aren’t shy) of glamour, drag, local poets and actors, fishnets (this one isn’t a pun – you know what fishnets are, right?), sequins, feathers, comedy and tease. And a script groaning with (much better) fish puns.
“As always, you can expect high quality burlesque from Miss Dee Dee, Gwenaël LaSirène, Angel X,Lady Liberty Vin-tage and the Queens & Tassels ‘kittens’, as well as outrageous drag turns from Vida La Fierce and others,” continues Hazel. “And as Queenie’s Plaice is just up from the harbour in Peel there will definitely be sailors, but you’ll need to be there to find out how we’re all caught up in this very fishy tale!”
Fatal Fishnet Folliesis an entirely new show, written and directed by Amy Nash with some familiar burlesque faces, the Island’s best known drag stars and a few new-to-burlesque personalities.
The story is actually not just fishy, it’s also hilarious and so elaborate it’s impossible to summarise without giving the twists and turns away. So as a fish-egg-sushi-starter to reel you in, here’s what Queens & Tassels has to say about Fatal Fishnet Follies:
“We can’t say it often enough – burlesque is more about the tease than the strip,” says Hazel ‘Angel X’ Walsh, “and with Fatal Fishnet Follies, we’ve upped the glamour with a script which wraps up winks and shimmies in the comedy which is an essential element of true burlesque, but this year with a decidedly local fishy feel.” The show tells the story of glamourous burlesque madam Queenie (played by local poet and actress Georgia Lisette), with her eventful and sometimes tragic life played out in flashbacks, reflecting on her husbands, her true loves and the men who let her down, and the sometimes dubious decisions she made along the way. How did her career start? How did she meet Captain Languostine, Dandi Devereux and ‘Kev-
from-the-Pev’? Where are they now? How did she end up running Queenie’s Plaice in Peel? And what do Angel Fish X, Miss Tina Tuna, Prawn French, Coco Starfish, Penny Ray and Guppy Rose Lee have to do with any of it anyway? But enough of the fish puns for now. Queens & Tassels has been around in
“Songs you know and love, saucy humour, tantalising dances and a whole aquarium of fish puns to hook you from the start …. Feathers will fly. Someone will die. But the burlesque will go on.”
Tickets for Fatal Fishnet Follies(£18 per person) are available now online at www.centenarycentre.comor from Celtic Gold - Peel, ShaktiMan – Ramsey, Corletts Jewellers – Douglas & Thompsons Travel – Port Erin facebookQueensandTassels.

paintings is at first glance abstract, but when you look more closely you can see how Andrew has recognised the varied yet similar patterns in nature, interpreting them in such a way that his paintings are not representational but at the same time arefamiliar. Back to Laxey on Saturday 7 September for the first day of Tony Hewson’s ‘It’s all in the detail’ at the Hodgson Loom Gallery. Like Andrew MacKellar, Tony is inspired by nature and landscapes – often familiar glens and mountains he has explored – but he is also exhibiting paintings which concentrate on the varying textures of natural objects or, as Tony says, ‘close ups of chunks of rock, stone or plants.’
IMAGE, FORM AND DETAIL A QUICK ROUND UP OF NEW EXHIBITIONS Words: Suzy Holland Images: Andrew MacKellar and Lorna Smith
Three new exhibitions at galleries in Laxey and Castletown this month offer an eclectic mix for the Island’s art lovers this month, and whether you love colour, figurative, abstract or representational work there’s something for you. First to open (Wednesday 4th) at Mother T’s on New Road in Laxey is Lorna Smith’s ‘Making her Mark’. This is Lorna’s first

public exhibition on the Island since graduation from the University of Falmouth with a degree in Fine Art and includes a variety of illustrative and colourful imagery, portraiture, abstract and still life drawings. Two days later (Friday 6th) sees the preview of Andrew MacKellar’s ‘Abstration and other Ideas’ at the Engine House in Castletown. Landscapes and the sea provide Andrew with his inspiration, but not quite in the way you might expect: this new exhibition of oil, acrylic and gouache
Collectively, these exhibitions show artists at different stages of their creative careers and the continual development of their artistic pathway, but it’s clear that all three delve deeply into the detail of their subjects – whether it be portraits, traditional landscapes or interpretation of natural form. The exhibitions are on until the end of the month, but if you’d like to talk to the artists yourself, then why not go to the previews? Details of these can be found on the galleries’ Facebook pages. ‘Making Her Mark’– Mother T’s, Laxey until 30 September www.facebook. com/motherteasor www.facebook.com/ lornasmithart ‘Abstraction and Other Ideas’– the Engine House, Castletown until 28 September www. facebook.com/EngineIOM ‘It’s all in the detail’– Hodgson Loom Gallery, Laxey until 28 September www. facebook.com/hodgsonloomgallery ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

MANX LITFEST: BETTER AND BUSIER THAN EVER The end of the month sees the 8th Manx LitFest - and what a fest it is. There are numerous opportunities to listen and talk to published authors about their books and this year’s stand-out events include several for children and adults from award winning children’s author (and screenwriter, and co-creator of the London Olympics opening ceremony) Frank Cottrell-Boyce. If you like the darker side of the art business, then author Tom Rachman is talking about his latest book ‘The Italian Teacher’, which peeks into the private workings of the arts and asks why beauty is such an ugly business. There’s also an ‘in conversation’ event delving into the worlds of science fiction and science fantasy with authors Emma Newton and Gareth L Powell and an appearance from transgender author Juno Dawson, who writes about LBGT issues for young adults and adults. There is also a fair amount of performance poetry and story-telling. Poet Mark Grist is making a triumphant return after his sell-out (and hilarious) performances at Lit Fest in 2014 with his new choose-your-ownadventure poem ‘Slacker-in-Law’. Mark comes to the Island following rave reviews for his shows at the Edinburgh Festival so you might want to get your ticket for this one (25thSept) as soon as you can.
Parable Arts - and LitFest favourite storyteller Jon Buckeridge is performing twice during the festival: ‘The Forgotten Tales’ at the Studio Theatre, Ballakermeeen on Friday 27th (first seen at last year’s festival) and then a new show ‘The Once and Future King’, based on Arthurian legend, at the Erin Arts Centre on Sunday evening to bring the LitFest curtain down. Manx LitFest has long supported new and emerging writers of all genres including the ever-popular Poetry and Short Story Slams which aren’t nearly as scary as they sound. Although entrants are fiercely competitive they are actually very supportive of each other – and audiences report being entertained, thrilled, and awed by the local talent on show. Saturday is Writers’ Day, with an extensive programme of talks, panel discussions, masterclasses and networking opportunities for beginners and published authors. And a day later poets Isabelle Kenyon and Janet Lees lead a ‘Planet in Peril’ workshop followed by an open-mic poetry reading with an environmental theme. Friday is the annual School’s Day and once again LitFest has arranged a whole series of events with a team
of authors, illustrators and poets touring schools talking to and encouraging the next generation. More information will be available from LitFest and your child’s school nearer the time. Just enough space left to mention that the winners of the Olive Lamming Writing Prize will be announced, and last - but not definitely not least - the Book Fanatics’ Quiz Night on Thursday 26th, but if you want to grab your friends and make up a team for that you’ll need to hurry!
This is a just a snapshot of the Manx LitFest 2019 which takes place across the Island from 24-29 September. For more information and tickets – and you should book soon to avoid disappointment - go to www.manxlitfest.com and www.facebook.com/manxlitfest Manx LitFest is supported by IOM Arts Council, Culture Vannin and a number of corporate and private sponsors

CM is very pleased with the results this year, Gail Corrin, Higher Education Development Manager at UCM said, “We are very delighted with our degree students’ results, as it is testament to their hard work and dedication. Congratulations to all of them! This also demonstrates the quality of teaching at UCM, where all of our lecturers are practitioners in their specialist fields.” Gail commented that the benefits of studying at a higher level on island has provided a viable option for residents to progress in their education and career, which may have also contributed to the increasing interest from international students wanting to study on the Isle of Man. “We continue to have a great number of students through our higher education courses; in addition to the excellent results, doing a degree on the Isle of Man provides excellent value for money compared to off-island options, and having family and friends close to support students is certainly a great advantage too.” “Not only that, due to our close ties with local and international businesses, our students are able to gain valuable practical skills and experience through internships and work placements,” Gail added, reinforced by the fact that 91% of UCM students gain relevant employment on or before they graduate. L360 marked a major milestone recently as the company received its 10,000th online application since the launch of the company’s new business desktop and tablet online application system. Desktop applications were introduced in May 2016 and the tablet app 10 months later. Initially for Quantum, the app was subsequently developed to include Oracle and then the new Regular Savings Plan (RSP) product. Online applications now account for over 35% of RSP and Oracle applications received by RL360. “This is an important milestone for us, demonstrating our commitment to use technology to provide faster and more cost effective ways for advisers and customers to interact and do business with us,” said RL360 Marketing Director Simon Barwell. The desktop and tablet apps provide an efficient, cost-effective way for advisers to submit clients’ applications. The online system eradicates hold ups while the applications are in transit and the need for expensive courier costs. The system’s smart validation feature means errors or omissions are identified early, reducing delays in accepting new business. To find out more visit: www.rl360app.com

Recipe Toastie sandwich anyone?
HOW TO MAKE GENEVIEVE TAYLOR’S RAINBOW CHARD, CHEDDAR AND MANGO CHUTNEY CHEESE TOASTIE This is a cheese sandwich, grilled to perfection. “Chard is a very lovely thing to grill, the earthy flavours responding brilliantly to heat and smoke. You need to treat the stems and leaves almost as two separate vegetables, as the stems take considerably longer to cook,” explains grill extraordinaire, Genenvieve Taylor. “I tend to put them on to a cold griddle, then turn on the heat so they start with a few minutes of gentle cooking as the temperature rises. Of course, if you are cooking over charcoal this isn’t practical, so start them off on a colder part of your barbecue before moving them over the direct heat once they have started to soften.”
46
Ingredients: (Serves 1) n A drizzle of olive oil n 4 stalks of rainbow chard, stems and leaves separated n A slick of butter n 2 generous slices of sourdough bread n 1 bird’s-eye chilli, finely chopped, or more to taste n 75g extra mature Cheddar n 1tbsp mango chutney n Salt and freshly ground black pepper
the leaves and top with the Cheddar. Turn over the other slice of bread and spread the mango chutney on the unbuttered side, then invert over the sandwich and press down firmly so the buttered side is on top. Transfer to the grill carefully, using a fish slice and tongs to keep everything together, and cook for a couple of minutes each side. 3. It’s ready when the bread is nicely toasted and the cheese is melting. Slice in half and allow to cool for a minute or so before eating - the molten cheese will be burn-your-tongue hot.
Method: 1. Drizzle a little oil over the stems and leaves of the chard, rubbing it in so they are evenly coated. Rest the stems on your griddle and turn on the heat so they begin to soften as it comes up to temperature, or set them on the grill, slightly away from the fire. Turn them over regularly as they cook so they caramelise all over. Once the stems are almost cooked, about 10 minutes, add the leaves to the hot grill and allow them to wilt and start to char in places. 2. Spread just a little butter on both slices of bread. Turn one slice over and layer on the grilled chard leaves. Roughly chop the stems and toss together on the chopping board with the chilli. Scatter them over
Charred by Genevieve Taylor, photography by Jason Ingram, is published by Quadrille, priced £16.99.

Words by Jamie Lawerence at The Wine Cellar
BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO CHAMPAGNE CHAMPAGNE – A HISTORICAL PROVINCE IN THE NORTH EAST OF FRANCE, LISTED AS A WORLD HERITAGE SITE AND BEST KNOWN FOR THE PRODUCTION OF OUTSTANDING SPARKLING WINES. THOSE WHO DON’T WORK WITH WINE MAY FAIL TO UNDERSTAND THE FUSS ABOUT CHAMPAGNE. SOME MAY SAY THAT IF YOU LIKE A WINE, WHY LET BUBBLES INTERRUPT ITS FLAVOUR? IN FACT, BUBBLES ACT AS A MAGNIFYING GLASS FOR IMPERFECTIONS IN A WINE, SO IT MUST BE OF EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY TO BECOME GREAT FIZZ.
Only grapes grown according to strict rules within the appellation are to be used in the production of Champagne. The primary grape varietals are; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. There are so many expressions of this fantastic style that there really is something to suit all palates. We hope that this brief guide helps you find yours. Blended for consistency, non-vintage Champagnes are carefully controlled and blended with reserve wines to ensure that they taste the same year on year. Therefore, the associations that we have with a particular Champagne brand (or house) are based on this style. Typical flavours include fresh fruit (crisp green apples) and occasional floral characters, held together with lightly yeasty notes such as croissant. The structure and refreshing acidity of these wines make them great aperitifs that shine alongside canapes, particularly blinis. Champagne is also a great match to fish and chips; the bubbles of the wine go with the bubbly batter and the freshness of the wine stops the fish from being greasy. Sadly, you can’t season the fish and chips with vinegar as this completely dulls your palate (mayonnaise and tartare sauce are other no-no’s). Rosé Champagne tends to give more fresh
cherry and berry flavours and is often less yeasty. The colour derives from the black grape skins and sometimes imparts extra texture. Fresh, fruity and incredibly easy drinking, this style is wonderfully versatile often boasting strawberry and raspberry flavours, which makes for both a great aperitif and digestif. Where non-vintage Champagne is virtually the same every year, vintage Champagne is designed to be uniquely representative of the stated year. As it is aged for longer the flavours are often much richer and more complex. Stewed fruits are more typical than fresh fruit flavours. Yeasty characters draw from the entire spectrum, from brioche and toast to biscuits and Danish pastry. Demand for the best vintage Champagnes is so high because thereis such a limited quantity available and they may never taste the same way again; a tragedy for those who miss out. Champagne varies in dryness based on something called a “dosage” (a small amount of sweet wine added to the bottle to complete the sparkling wine). Brut is the standard level of dryness most familiar to us. A higher dosage results in a style known as Demi-
Sec which is a sweeter style created so that you can drink your favourite Champagne with dessert; if you were to drink Brut Champagne with dessert the flavours would get lost, but with Demi-Sec the sugar levels balance out and the flavours hold up against sweet foods (strawberries being a key exception as they do bring out the flavours in a Brut). Gremillet Brut Selection NV is served at embassies all over the world and has ranked in Decanter magazine’s best value Champagnes under £40. Fresh floral aromas combine with characteristic sweet brioche overtones, balanced by peach skin and baked biscuit flavours with a crisp citrus finish. This is a great place to start your Champagne journey. Pierre Mignon Grande Reserve Brut Rose NV is a beautiful coloured rose with delicate red berry fruit on the nose with hints of biscuity complexity. Bright, juicy and creamy on the palate with a core of ripe red fruit and a delicately scented finish. Extremely versatile but particularly exquisite with smoked salmon. Louis Roederer is responsible for the world-famous Cristal Champagne and usually features in the Top 5 of the “Most Admired Champagne Brands in the World”. At a fraction of the cost is their house vintage style which is less well-known but utterly stunning. Pair with shellfish such as prawns, langoustines or lobster to add to the opulence. Billecart-Salmon is only sold in the finest wine shops and restaurants in the world. The Demi-Sec is known for having a beautiful pale gold colour and emitting a constant procession of fine, regular and persistent bubbles in the glass. On the nose it is lively with a hint of delicate white flowers which evolve towards aromas of buttered brioche. Full-flavoured with a perfect balance between sugar, alcohol and acidity. Ideal when served with patisseries or chocolate cake So, no matter your taste or budget we are confident that there is a Champagne for everyone and for every occasion. These are just a few suggestions to get you started but why not call in to see our full range and let us help you find your ultimate celebration champers.

RELAXED FINE DINING AT ITS BEST
OCEAN, DOUGLAS Ocean on North Quay in Douglas goes from strength to strength, with new menus, guests returning time after time and glowing reviews on all the usual feedback sites, so Gallery went along to find out what it’s doing right, and what makes it stand out from the other restaurants in the area. “We like to call it relaxed fine dining,” says manager Neil Barlow “It’s the food, it’s the service, it’s the ambience, and any successful restaurant needs all three elements to work together seamlessly. I can’t take the credit for this, it’s a real team effort.” The Ocean family has worked together across a number of Island restaurants and it’s clear that not only are they great at their jobs, they also enjoy it. But it’s the food which brings in the customers so over to head chef Steve Gerrard: “The whole farm (or sea) to fork idea is great when we have such fantastic local produce,” he says, “and at Ocean I take my pick of fish, meat and vegetables and devise our menus around what’s available. Did you know that the lobsters from Niarbyl Bay are the best? Our supplier Cushlin Seafoods does, so that’s what we insist on! Even the veg, from Bry Rad in Ramsey, smells like the veg you remember before it all came shrink wrapped.” But if it’s the food which attracts customers in the first place, it’s also the welcome which brings them back.
“We have a small front-of-house team,” says Neil, “and not only do we know the menu inside out, we can be as unobtrusive or chatty as guests prefer. It’s all about great customer service and we offer the best.” Neil’s part of that team but, he says that Rachel #1, known as Buzz, is definitely in charge. “The two Rachels, Ellie, Carla, Lucy keep it all running smoothly - I’m just a small cog in the front-of-house wheel.” As a small restaurant with a small kitchen, it could get very fraught, but chefs Steve and Chip, along with multi-tasking Basil, have worked together a long time, and this familiarity shows. “Nobody wants to hear muttered swearing or constant clatter of dropped pans when they’re eating out and at Ocean you won’t,” says Steve, “and it’s this unruffled approach to fine dining I’m keen to instill in our chef-in-training Alex too. It’s a bit of a cliché but we see ourselves like swans, gliding serenely around and keeping the furious paddling out of sight, and out of earshot!” But back to the food. As well as lunch (Tuesday to Friday) and dinner (Tuesday to Saturday) Ocean has a brand new brunch menu – available from 10.30am – 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays with a Brunch promotion of a bottle of Prosecco for £18. Neil again: “There is a growing demand for a relaxed brunch ‘experience’ and at Ocean that’s what we’re providing. We might seat only 30 people, but we don’t hurry anyone out to make room for more. Brunch is a great opportunity to spend quality time with friends, so why not try out our new menu and start the day at Ocean?” And also tucked away in the menu is something that should appeal to anyone planning a trip to the theatre, cinema or any other event – the ‘early arrival’ option on Friday and Saturday, which offers 15% discount for a 1 ½ hour time slot with dinner served between 5.45 and 6.30pm. It’s best to book this in advance – although Ocean does accommodate ‘walk-ins’ – so your waiter knows you’re off out afterwards. “We don’t like to hurry people, but we don’t want you anxiously looking at your watch either,” says Neil, “and we definitely don’t want you leaving Ocean disappointed then paying for overpriced popcorn at the cinema!”
So if you like the sound of relaxed fine dining, Ocean’s the place to go. To see the current menus, or to book brunch, lunch or dinner online go to www.oceanrestaurant.im. For any other enquiries call 622000 or email: manager@oceanrestaurant.im. The Ocean family will be happy to help.

11 YEARS OF CELEBRATING THE ISLAND’S BEST IN FOOD AND DRINK
The Isle of Man Food & Drink Festival returns to the Villa Marina Gardens on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September with a funfilled programme for all the family. Celebrate quality and low food miles in the Manx Produce Marquee, sample international cuisine showcasing the best of the Island’s produce in the catering village, meet local drinks producers in the Festival Bar and be inspired in the Manx Cookery Theatre. Festival regulars will be joined by new exhibitors including Sugar & Spice Bakery, Isle of Man Seafoods, The Gourmet Donut Company, Baby Cheezus, Cow & Pig Smokehouse, MexiMann and Versa, and the celebrity guest will be professional pastry chef Selasi Gbormittah.
Selasi will use local ingredients to prepare a Blackberry and Chocolate Plated Dessert and a Loganberry and Pistachio Tart for visitors, and talk about his journey from amateur to professional baker at 7pm on the Saturday night. Tickets for this talk are free but limited and are available to reserve via the www.villagaiety.com. Mae Challis headlines the live music stage on Saturday night when entry is free for visitors from 5pm (when the Manx Produce Marquee closes) until 9pm. Cheer on your favourite team in the Hot Dog Eating Competition (contact food@gov.imto apply) and enjoy local street food, beer, cider, sparkling wine and cocktails flowing from the Festival Bar. With free entry for under-16s, children can get stuck into a range of food-based activities using local produce in the Children’s Activity Marquee sponsored by The Buchan School. Complete the farm to fork story with the help of the Manx National Farmers Union and Isle of Man
Creamery; watch the cows being milked, stroke the calves, goats and meet the Manx Loaghtan sheep.
Every £1 spent locally on Manx food is worth £1.83 to the local economy. According to an Exhibitor and Visitor Research Report compiled by The Marketing Partnership, the Festival’s worth to the local economy has been rising year-on-year from £230,000 in 2017 to £298,000 in 2018. The Festival aims to support our Biosphere for future generations; local produce reduces food miles, packaging, waste and our carbon footprint. With a renewed focus on recycling and waste reduction this year, Beach Buddies will be on hand to assist at recycling stations across the gardens and a central hub will provide myth busting facts and information about how you can make a difference. A CHANCE CONVERSATION AT THE END OF APRIL 2018 LED TO A SWIFT DECISION TO SET UP A NEW CONCEPT FOR THE ISLE OF MAN. The brainchild of Anne Harrison, with 30 years in the wine trade, and Roy Macfarlane, almost as many years in the kitchen, Wine Down opened its doors on August 6th 2018. Anne said: “We got together to share our passion for food and wine and to offer a unique dining experience on the Island.” The Team From the outset, the aim has been to offer great quality food and wine in a relaxed environment. We see personal and friendly service as key to the business and pride ourselves on the quality of our hardworking team, both front and back of house. Our two talented young chefs, Graham and David, who joined us earlier this year, work hard to ensure Roy’s high standards are consistently achieved and the nature of the menu gives them the opportunity to be creative. We have invested in new kitchen equipment, enabling them to keep coming up with new and exciting dishes. Gary, our kitchen assistant/chef, has been working with Roy for over 10 years and is the engine that keeps us all going, with both his work ethic and his incessant banter! Front of house is Maggie, who joined us in our first month. She is the creative member of the team and she is responsible for putting together our bespoke gift packs.

When she arrived, the extent of her wine knowledge was ‘it’s red or white’, but now she can confidently advise on our range, and grape varieties such as Xinomavro, Thrapsathiri and Zweigelt roll off her Irish tongue! Desi is our newest member, coming to us from Theatre of Wine in London. Desi has worked in the wine trade for almost 20 years in places as far afield as California, China and her native Bulgaria. Her passion for wine is unsurpassable and her warm and friendly nature has made her very popular with our customers in the short time she has been on the Island. The Wine Bar/Restaurant Our menu is very flexible, allowing customers to enjoy a traditional three course meal or to select several dishes to share. The size of the dishes varies and allows everyone to eat as much or as little as they wish. Our wine list by the glass changes regularly and we have a selection of over 200 wines available by the bottle. Our licence allows customers to take away part bottles so if you wish to order a bottle but only want to drink a glass, we can cork it for you to take home and enjoy later. The Shop Unbeknown to many, we are also a shop and are immensely proud of our range of wines, which is ever changing. We have been delighted with the response so far to the quality and breadth of our selection. We offer discounts on case sales of 6 and 12 bottles and deliver across the Island in our own van. Our opening hours for the shop are 10am until 10pm and it is possible to park outside the front door after 5pm in the evening. You are very welcome to call in at any time to browse the shelves and maybe enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine! There is always someone here to give friendly expert advice and we have at least 12 bottles open to taste, including a premium one, so you can try before you buy. If you do not have time to come in or prefer to shop on-line, you can visit our website www.winedown.im The Masterclasses, Tastings and Food Pairings We run regular Masterclasses and have covered subjects such as Greek wines, Sauvignon Blanc and Sparkling wines. At the end of September we have a tasting of Austrian and German wines. These are tutored tastings accompanied by light bites to complement each wine. If you are interested in learning more about wine in a friendly informal and relaxed atmosphere, sign up to our mailing list by going to our website and completing our form. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
We hold twice yearly tastings at which you can taste around 30 wines with light bites. We find our customers get settled in for the afternoon and enjoy a meal afterwards. An ideal opportunity to meet people, make new friends and simply relax. The School Anne and Desi are undeniably the two most experienced wine specialists on the Island, qualified to Level 4 and 3 respectively of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Examinations. Anne has recently qualified further, passing the rigorous Educator course and is the local Approved Programme Provider, enabling her to teach to Level 3 on the Island. The WSET qualifications are recognised throughout the world, and in association with WSET in the North West, Anne and Desi will offer WSET qualifications in the near future. If you have an interest in, or work with wine, and wish to study for a formal qualification, please get in touch at relax@winedown.im The course will be educational yet relaxed, and will take place in Wine Down with the examination in the approved venue of Ballakermeen High School. We love to celebrate here at Wine Down and we find every opportunity we can! If there is a National or International Day for a grape variety, you can rest assured we will put on a selection of wines with a tasting menu to match. In September we are celebrating Grenache Day and in November it is the turn of Merlot, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. In addition, we have a food and wine pairing every few days so there is always something new to try at Wine Down.
If you have not yet signed up to our mailing list, why not call in to see us, call us on 624777 or drop us an email at www.winedown.im We look forward to welcoming you to the relaxing experience of Wine Down.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) Gas 4. 2. To make the caramelised chilli pecans, put 50ml water and the sugar in a small frying pan over medium heat and stir with a wooden spatula for two minutes. Add the pecans and stir well as the water evaporates. After three to four minutes, add the chilli powder and salt, stirring all the time and making sure the pecans are evenly coated. Continue stirring for a few minutes longer, until all the water has evaporated, the pecans are coated and the pan is dry. Tip the pecans onto a plate or waxed paper to cool. 3. To make the brownies, melt the chocolate and the butter in a large heavy-based saucepan over low heat. Stir well with a wooden spoon until thoroughly melted and smooth, then let cool for a few minutes. Add the sugar and mix. 4. Beat the eggs and vanilla into the chocolate mixture in the pan, with the wooden spoon, until well blended. Sift the flour, Baharat spice blend and salt into the pan and stir until just mixed. Stir in the caramelised pecans. 5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until firm to the touch or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Let cool in the baking pan on a wire rack, then cut the brownies into squares. They should last for one week in an airtight container.

CASCAIS: THE DREAMY PORTUGUESE SEASIDE TOWN YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW Close to Lisbon but far less crowded, this pleasant town is the ideal base for rest and relaxation, says Liz Ryan.
Boca do Inferno in Portgual
It’s dark inside the cluttered boathouse, where salt-spattered windows make it impossible to peer inside. This, at least, gives me some relief as I struggle to cram my reluctant middle-aged body into a wetsuit. Unfamiliar with the garment, I’m not even sure I’m putting it on the right way round. By the time I emerge - hot and bothered - I’m already convinced my decision to try stand-up paddle boarding is destined for disaster. Why on earth am I risking humiliation in a place as chic and stylish as Cascais?
Monserrate Palace Gardens

This Atlantic resort town west of Lisbon has long been seen as a must-do day trip from the Portuguese capital. As well as outdoor adventure, it has many attractions; beaches to suit all tastes, a higgledy-piggledy old town, and the Paula Rego Modern Art Museum dedicated to the venerable
Portuguese painter. But you can just as well use the pristine suburb as a base for exploring Lisbon and its surrounding area, including the beautiful English gardens and palace of Monserrate at Unesco World Heritage site Sintra. When it comes to watery pursuits, I should have had more faith - not just in my own abilities, but in Nick and Wolfi from SurfnPaddle Cascais (surfnpaddle.com). At sheltered Duquesa Beach, their individual attention helps get me afloat. The first stage is an onshore briefing from Nick, a surf-mad Merseysider who married a Brazilian girl and set up a surfing school with her in Cascais. Then I launch my board across breakers that are all of two feet high to meet Wolfi, ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

and mountain biking. In the company of a guide, Francisco, from Walk Hike Portugal (portugalwalkhike.com), I tramp crumbling cliffs held together by cactus plants. The boulder-strewn cedar forest of Sintra Mountain is another tranquil hiking-andbiking option.
my tutor and a competitive paddle-boarder, who was born in Austria but now makes and markets paddleboard wetsuits internationally from his Cascais base. Once I overcome my collywobbles, I discover that my punting skills, acquired decades ago on rivers Cherwell and Cam, have a direct application to paddle boarding. There is an unexpected serenity from propelling myself rhythmically across the bay under my own steam - and a huge sense of accomplishment from taking on a new challenge at a time of life when it’s easy to fall into a rut. I’m staying at the five-star Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel & Spa, previously the home of Umberto II, the exiled last King Of Italy. A sense of decadence still clings to the residence, and while piling my plate at breakfast I’m amused to note that vodka, tomato juice, Tobasco and Worcester Sauce - all the makings of a perfect Bloody Mary are laid out in a discreet corner.
Salty Pelican yoga session
Villa Italia hotel
The Villa Italia’s basement houses a spa and hydrotherapy complex, inspired by the underground shrines of the ancient world. To enter, one descends a flight of marble stairs, with tiny aqueducts tinkling on either side. Beyond the mysterious portal, the hydrotherapy pool and relaxation areas have an airy, sky-lit brightness. A 50-minute body scrub and massage turn me into an acolyte of whatever goddess is being worshipped here. With liberal use of sunflower oil (no, not the sort you buy in the supermarket; think wafting aromas of health-giving fresh seeds) my rough skin and ill humours are sloughed away. The therapist uses a cabaca, or bottle gourd, as well as her skilled hands, to unknot my aching post-paddle muscles. If the weather is fine, then sunrise yoga is available on the beach. My class is forced indoors by threatening skies, but still does a great job of boosting my physical awareness and calming my mind. Sonia from Salty Pelican Surf & Yoga Retreats (saltypelican-cascais.com) soon has me tying myself in knots on the mat during a session of rebalancing yin yoga.
On a coast renowned for its seafood, choosing my favourite ocean-side restaurant becomes a dilemma. Accompanied by a spectacular view of waves crashing on rocks, fine dining is served at the Farol Hotel. But the modest Da Adraga Beach Cafe (restaurantedaadraga.com), where multigenerational Portuguese families dine together after knocking the sand out of their shoes, sets the bar high by serving goose barnacles. These fearsome objects are prised from the inter-tidal zones of rocky shores, a dangerous and timeconsuming business. For main course, a freshly-caught sea bass is paraded in front of the table. Expertly cooked and filleted, it is served simply with lemon on a giant platter. At Maria Pia Seafood Lounge (restaurantemariapia.pt), overlooking Cascais Harbour, I eat a spicy fish and potato stew made with fresh finds from that morning’s market. Outside, yachts form a riveting spectacle as they negotiate the lively wind and tides to enter the marina.
stand-up paddle boarding
Wherever you go in Cascais, there’s a celebration of the sea - whether you choose to get in the water or enjoy its bounties on dry land. Both, I’ve discovered, are fun although it’s safe to say, getting dressed for dinner is far less of an ordeal.
How to get there TAP (flytap.com) flies from London to Lisbon from £92 return. Doubles at the Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel & Spa (granderealvillaitalia. realhotelsgroup.com) cost from E140/£126 per night including breakfast. For more information on the destinaation, go to visitcascais.com.
And at sunset, Cabo Da Roca is the place to view the Green Flash - a meteorological optical illusion where a green dot appears to hover above the setting sun. This is Europe’s most westerly point, and in places, the coastline has the wild grandeur of the West of Ireland. The headland has long since surrendered to coach parks and selfie-sticks, but the surrounding National Park of Sintra-Cascais is great for walking

THE ISLE OF MAN’S BOUTIQUE SPA-CATION Words by: Lisa Gadman Photography By: Dave Silvester, Colby Studio
A
new booking surge for spa mini breaks has emerged in the UK as Brits seek to combine relaxation with a romantic weekend away. According to Bing, Spa mini breaks made up nearly a quarter of total search volume relating to short breaks. Spa breaks were found to be most popular amongst the millennial demographic, with half of searches coming from under 35 year olds. So what does this mean for the Isle of Man? Local 5 star boutique retreat, Seascape of Laxey Bay, is setting the pace for this emerging trend in the Isle of Man offering guests 5* luxury Bed and Breakfast accommodation with Spa facilities which is so highly coveted they have an exclusive 3 month waiting list. Hotelier and entrepreneur Michelle Hitchen had the vision of building the ultimate setting to create the perfect spa-cation (“spa vacation”) combining opulent rooms and decor, fine foods, infra-red sauna, relaxation suites and outdoor hot tub overlooking awe-inspiring sea views of Laxey Bay. Built in 2008, Seascape of Laxey Bay is a cathedral of relaxation; boasting floor to ceiling glass which immerses every room with beautiful light. “As you walk through the doors, you are

presented with panoramic views from all sides, and it feels as though you are walking into the ocean” comments owner Michelle. The retreat was designed by Isle of Man architects Penketh Millar to Michelle’s vision which was influenced by contemporary architecture in Marbella, Lanzarote and Australia. The architectural design brings the outside world in, making the most of the panoramic seascapes. The building has split levels with a lofty 3m ceiling which never changes height so the line of sight to the ocean is never interrupted. Hues of white, ivory, silver and pale gold reside throughout the retreat’s opulent decor, from the stylish furnishings imported from Marbella to the ivory silk cushions and rugs which together create a reflective, relaxing space. The decor is an eclectic mix of bespoke local artist’s glass pieces, Nancy Corkish paintings, Buddhist artwork and eastern antiques gathered during Michelle’s travels. Drawing upon her natural entrepreneurial spirit, Michelle saw a gap in the Isle of Man market for creating a 5* luxury bed and breakfast with Spa facilities, thus launched Seascape of Laxey Bay in 2016 and exclusive Spa Breaks in early 2017. “I felt drawn to the idea of setting up a luxury bed & breakfast with spa on the island, especially to share the beauty of the Seascape building, its architecture and stunning views—the response has ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

4 OF THE UK’S MOST AMAZING EXPERIENCES, ACCORDING TO LONELY PLANET The travel gurus have published a new book rating the best things to do and see close to home. 1. Gaze at priceless treasures Where: The British Museum, London What started as a cabinet of curiosities collected by 18th-century physician Sir Hans Sloane, blossomed into the Britain’s first public national museum. The eccentric collector bequeathed his treasures on the condition they could be viewed by everyone - and even today, the museum’s permanent exhibition is free to visit. From mummified Pharaohs to the Parthenon Marbles, controversy surrounds many of the pieces which were the spoils of a colonial era. Temporary exhibitions are also held beneath a geodesic canopy designed by
Norman Foster. There’s far too much to see in on trip, so plan to visit on multiple days. Or focus on particular areas; the Egyptian treasures are the best.
Along with conquering empires and making excellent roads, the Romans were experts at bathing. During their reign over Britain around 2000 years ago, they took advantage of geothermal springs around the area today known as Bath, by building a sumptuous spa.
2. Take giant strides over legendary stones Where: The Giant’s Causeway, Ireland Northern Ireland’s only Unesco World Heritage site has been the subject of legends for centuries. The uneven stacks of hexagonal basalt columns, standing in neat clusters along the water’s edge, are said to be debris remaining from a battle between giants. According to scientists however, the formation of the rocks was created by volcanic activity some 60 million years ago, when lava flow cooled, hardened and contracted, resulting in a honeycomb pattern. 4. Retrace the path of great empires Where: Hadrian’s Wall, England Another Roman phenomenon is this defensive wall which stretches 73 miles across Britain. It was built under the emperor Hadrian between AD 122 and 128 to keep out Scottish Picts, and took 15,000 men six years to construct.

Regarded as one of the best-preserved Roman bathhouses in the world, most of the structure is still standing - including bathing pools, changing rooms, the original hypocaust heating system and the central Great Bath, lined with lead and filled with 5.2ft of steaming, geothermally heated water. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to take a dip, but you can pop to the nearby Thermae Bath Spa and enjoy its panoramic rooftop pool.
Although only 10% of the wall survives today, it’s still impressive. Exploring sections is easy, thanks to good rail and road access. 5 REASONS WHY AN ESTATE CAR IS BETTER THAN AN SUV
Tempted by a high-riding SUV but wondering whether there’s an alternative? Here’s how the humble estate car proves its worth, says Jack Evans. It’s hard to ignore the meteoric rise of the SUV. Step into any new car dealership and you’ll find a forecourt awash with highriding vehicles of all shapes and sizes. There’s a reason for that - people simply can’t get enough of them. But is there another way? Is there, perhaps, a type of car which can do everything that an SUV can do - but better? Well, we think the humble estate car is just such a vehicle and ticks all the necessary boxes. Here are five reasons why...

1. Driver involvement Yes, an SUV may deliver the high-riding, king-of-the-road driving position that many people love, but they simply can’t offer the same level of driver involvement that you’ll get from an estate car. Find your favourite twisty b-road, and it’s highly likely that you’ll have more fun on it driving a wagon rather than a four-wheeldrive. 2. Space Many SUVs give drivers the option of seven seats, and though on the odd occasion an estate car has also been able to seat seven, we’ll admit that they aren’t best suited to this use. However, where a wagon can usually match an SUV is load area. Because of the way they’re packaged, it’s likely that an estate will offer more than enough boot space for most occasions and,
should you need more, almost all have the option to fold the rear seats flat. 3. Looks We’ll admit that the imposing looks of an SUV can be appealing at times, but there’s something to be said about the way an estate car is designed - particularly when it’s hiding more performance than you’d expect. Of course, thoughts about a car’s appearance are down to the individual, but we’d always argue that there’s something pretty cool about the way an estate looks. 4. Efficiency It’s true that SUVs are becoming more efficient and that, for the most part, the time of big, thirsty four-wheel-drives is behind us. Off the bat though, estates are more efficient, with a lower profile and therefore a better drag coefficient.
Plus, because they’re lugging around less weight, estate cars will often use up less fuel than an equivalent SUV. There are exceptions, of course, with powerful petrol wagons still able to chew through fuel as well as their off-road rivals. 5. Variety They say that variety is the spice of life and, when it comes to estates, that’s certainly the case. Though nearly every manufacturer does an SUV these days, they also tend to offer a wagon - so there’s plenty to choose from. They’re not all huge, load-lugging leviathans either. There are plenty of compact estates on the market for those who want a little more practicality, but without a huge increase in size.

TOP 10 RUGBY WORLD CUP MOMENTS
The 2019 Rugby World Cup (RWC) kicks off on 20 September in Japan. Since the inaugural RWC in New Zealand in 1987, the tournament has become the third largest sporting event worldwide, only behind the football World Cup and Olympics, with over 400,000 rugby enthusiasts set to flock to Japan to follow their team. RL360 looks back over the previous 8 RWC tournaments and picks out the 10 most memorable moments.
1) MANDELA UNITES A NATION, 1995: Nelson Mandela saw the 1995 RWC as a way of uniting his still racially-divided people as South Africa came to terms with it’s post-apartheid future. Mandela wore the Springbok green jersey to the final - at that time a potent symbol of white South Africa - and danced with delight as South Africa edged out the All Blacks to win a tight final. It was a significant landmark for the “rainbow nation”, and was turned into a Hollywood film with Clint Eastwood’s movie “Invictus”. 2) JONAH LOMU SMASHES ENGLAND, 1995: Man-mountain Jonah Lomu became the game’s first global superstar with a - literally - unstoppable performance against England in the 1995 semi final. At 6ft 5in and 19 stone and described as “a freak” by England captain Will Carling, Lomu simply ran through the England defence, memorably trampling over English centre Mike Catt on the way to his first try. Though injury blighted his career, Lomu is still the (joint with Bryan Habana) RWC leading try scorer with 15 scores. 3) WILKINSON’S LAST MINUTE DROP GOAL BREAKS AUSSIE HEARTS, 2003: England were locked at 17 all in the 2003 RWC final in Sydney against hosts Australia with just 20 seconds of extra time remaining. Scrum half Matt Dawson fired a pass to the ice cool Johnny Wilkinson who calmly slotted over a winning drop goal, with his weaker right foot! Wilkinson,

the all time RWC record points scorer, became an instant legend and England remain the only northern hemisphere team to have won the RWC. 4) FRENCH BRILLIANCE INSPIRES GREATEST COMEBACK, 1999: Everything was going to script as tournament favourites the All Blacks built up a 24-10 lead against France at Twickenham in the 1999 RWC semi-final. In the greatest turnaround in RWC history, the French went on an inspired scoring spree with 3 tries and 33 unanswered points to blow the stunned All Blacks away. Les Bleus made another - though less dramatic comeback against the All Blacks in the 2007 RWC quarter-final. 5) CHERRY BLOSSOMS SHOCK MIGHTY SPRINGBOKS, 2015: Japan took on the mighty South Africa in a group match in Brighton, having not won a world cup match in 24 years. In a high-scoring and fluctuating game, the Japanese trailed by 3 points as they headed into injury time. Another fearless backline move saw Japanese centre Karne Hesketh crash over to seal a famous 34-32 victory and the greatest upset in World Cup history. It was the most humiliating day in South African rugby history – although they showed considerable character to shrug off this defeat to reach the semi-finals. 6) WESTERN SAMOA STUN WALES AT THE ARMS PARK, 1991: Wales, and the rest of the world of rugby, were stunned when huge underdogs Western Samoa pulled off a shock victory over the Welsh in their own back yard at the group stages of the 1991 tournament. As one Welsh observer drily commented: “Thank God we didn’t play the whole of Samoa”. The Samoans proved it was no fluke 8 years later when they defeated the Welsh again. 7) LYNAGH BREAKS IRISH HEARTS WITH LAST MINUTE TRY, 1991: No one gave Ireland a chance as they lined up in Dublin against tournament favourites Australia

in the RWC quarter final. With 5 minutes to go in a tight match, Irish flanker Gordon Hamilton galloped over the line from 40 metres to put Ireland ahead, and the “green and golds” on the verge of elimination. With virtually the last play of the game, the Australians spurned a penalty chance that would have levelled the match, instead opting to run the ball. The decision paid off when fly-half Michael Lynagh dived over for the match winning score. 8) KIRWIN SCORES GREATEST RWC TRY, 1987: In the first match in the very first RWC, John Kirwin scored a stunning solo try for tournament hosts New Zealand against Italy. Arguably there’s been no finer try scored in the subsequent 309 RWC matches played since. Receiving the ball in his own 22, right winger Kirwin evaded 7 tackles before diving over the line at the end of a mesmerising 80 metre run. The try, which helped propel the All Blacks to the inaugural RWC victory, helped to establish the tournament around the world. 9) ARGENTINA JOIN RUGBY’S TOP TABLE, 2007: Rugby has often struggled to extend its appeal beyond its traditional heartlands of western Europe, Australasia and South Africa. So it was with some relief that 2007 saw the emergence of a new powerhouse in the game. Argentina’s elevation to the top tier of rugby playing nations was confirmed, when the Pumas defeated hosts France twice, Scotland and Ireland on the way to a third place finish. 10) HASTINGS MISSES SITTER TO LET IN THE ‘AULD ENEMY, 1991: A tight semi final between rugby’s oldest of enemies was locked at 6-6 in Edinburgh in front of a partisan Scottish crowd. With the match in the final quarter, Scotland won a penalty right in front of the posts. Experienced Scottish full back Gavin Hastings took the kick but inexplicably sent the ball wide of the posts. England’s Rob Andrew struck a late drop-goal to earn England a narrow 9-6 victory.
