HANDS UP WHO can't believe it's that time of year again? With Christmas and the New Year just around the corner, festive events and parties are being planned all around Subiaco. To make your life easier, we've dedicated a fair few column inches to where to eat, drink and be merry in Subi this year, and I'm sure you'll find the perfect spot to celebrate with your nearest and dearest. There have been so many new openings during 2023, it sometimes feels like Subiaco is suddenly the centre of the universe for hip bars and unique venues. Add to the mix the most exciting announcement we've heard for a while, that some all-new night markets are starting in November until April, and you've got all the ingredients for a summer that packs a punch. Our cover star - Olive Cheng - shares her thoughts about her adorable pooch, McNulty, as well as continuing her mission to commit many of Subiaco's unique buildings into paintings for posterity. You'll find Olive along with a multitude of other clever creators, cooks and artisans at the Subi Farmers Market most Saturdays, and as Christmas approaches, the festive vibes ramp up considerably at the market and other retail venues around the streets of Subi. We're running a special extended feature too about the dogs who are looking for forever homes at Dogs' Refuge Home in Shenton Park. I do hope you'll consider adopting one of these beautiful hounds if you're considering adding to your family this summer. All that remains for me to do is to wish all our readers a very merry and safe Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Where you'll find our contributors this summer . . . Gabi: After an amazing year of new openings and new faces, I’m looking forward to kicking back at Bar Banter under the stars and toasting the year to come. Cally: Summer says rosé to me always, and on the terrace at Juanitas, pink glass in hand, is where I find the perfect vibe. Shelley: I am enjoying the Subiaco summer scene long, sunny days catching up with everyone while distributing our wonderful magazine. Bev: Summer in Subi is for night markets, alfresco wines with friends ... and exploring the new expanded Mecca store on Rokeby Road. Des: I’m known to be Sir Lunchalot so that’s what I’ll be doing this summer: eating, drinking and shopping in Subi til I drop. Gail: Whiling away a couple of hours at Bar Banter is at the top of my list on a lazy sunny afternoon, where I will be drinking a toast to the 30th anniversary of Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company. Sloane: I’ll be enjoying a festive drink or two with the Galley Press gang at Lums and enjoying the new night markets with Chorizo the sausage dog by my side. Lisa: I’ll be shopping for Christmas presents at Spoilt (to me, with love from me) and cooling off with iced lattes at Clean Food Store. Weekend evenings in Wholefood Circus' back garden for under-the-stars dining. Monique: This summer, I’ll incrementally be making my way through all the chardonnays and rieslings at my favourite bars and restaurants. Brooke EB: Now my young pup is better trained, I intend on checking out all the wonderful dog-friendly cafes in Subiaco this summer. Brooke H: You’ll find me venturing through the revamped Subi Night Market and exploring Subi’s alfresco bars, reminiscing of summer days spent sampling rosés in the Côtes de Provence.

Di: After a month in Italy, I'll be extending 'la dolce vita' by lingering over a spritz or a Negroni, twirling my way through a plate of pasta or grazing over a charcuterie board.

WE HAVE OUR FINGERS ON THE PULSE OF SUBI’S VIBRANT FOOD, DRINK AND RETAIL SCENE. CHECK OUT THESE GREEN SHOOTS LIVENING UP OUR CITY OF SOUL. BY Gabi Mills & Gail Williams
Bar Banter chats up a storm There’s always plenty of banter when hospitality mogul Clint Nolan swings by. Last year, when he opened La Condesa on the site of the old Oriel, the colourful Mexican eatery took off with locals like a bearded lizard on a hot tin roof. Nolan found himself so welcomed to the ‘hood that he is doing it all again with a new 100-seater Mediterranean-inspired bar – his 10th hospitality outlet in Perth – popping up in the rear laneway of La Condesa. Bar Banter, he promises, will be like no other – a place for after work drinks or a late-night cocktail. And the whipped ricotta with grill-kissed flatbread, charcuterie boards and 4

truffled parmesan potato gems will hit the hunger spot. “It’s more of a bar than restaurant,” says Nolan. “Think of it as your local watering hole with mouth-watering Mediterranean-inspired nibbles.
When we first opened La Condesa, it was all hands on deck. Watching Subiaco come alive again has been a real treat, and we're very proud to have La Condesa and Bar Banter contribute to this.”

ONE Subiaco Market still the ONE! Ozrif Burgers add sizzle to Subi
THERE MIGHT BE nostalgic sighs from a few sentimental Subi residents when they stroll through the new pop-up market on the ground floor retail precinct of ONE Subiaco. Some will be remembering back to 1982 and the colourful mishmash in the tin shed that was the old Pavilion Markets – indie stalls, kitsch souvenirs, fortune tellers, Oscar and his magic cards stall and an abundance of fresh produce. But when the markets were demolished in 2019 to make way for the $235 million Blackburne development, Subiaco residents were promised there would be new markets. And Blackburne has delivered on that promise. The first taster was on October 7 and there are two more planned for November 4 and December 2. They offer fun for all the family from 10am til 3pm with stallholders selling art and crafts, preserves and cupcakes. 6

Market Caff makes a mean skinny capp
SUBI DOESN’T LACK much, but one thing it’s missing is cafes that remain open after 3pm. Problem solved at Market Caff where regular Trish O’Reilly - one of the residents who has happily settled into ONE Subiaco in her lofty apartment - regularly pops into the ground floor nook for a cappuccino which she declares the best she’s ever tasted. She’s a big fan of their homemade cakes and pastries too. Market Caff is open every day and already has a band of regulars doing leisurely brunch and raving about Asian mushrooms and acai bowls.
SUMIE AND RIEF Gilbert will be the new burger kids on the block at ONE Subiaco, offering a taste of Asia in every burger bite. The star attraction on the menu is set to be their Ozrif Signature Burger, a fusion of juicy beef patties with Indonesian/Malaysian spices and garnishes. The couple also promise to deliver classic cheeseburgers with quality ingredients sourced from local farms and suppliers. Burger love is definitely in the air and comes with a side serve of fries and your favourite bevies. Opening early 2024.
And, if you see Trish, say “hello”. She is the one with the big smile on her face. Open Mon to Fri, 7.am to 3.30pm, Sat and Sun, 8am to 2.30pm.

Sponsored by McNulty often comes along for the ride to assist me. We will also pick up treats for my husband at Wei’s Dumpling Hut, Crossways or Bun Mi Subiaco and Nults will wait in the car with me, or sometimes he’s outside the shops winning hearts. Once I got back in the car from Officeworks Subi and McNults had turned on the radio and hazard lights. He was just trying to help.
DOGS of SUBIACO
McNULTY (and artist Olive Cheng) GM Tell me about McNulty - what age, breed and personality is he? OC McNulty is a pure-bred Dalmatian, however he is the less commonly seen ‘liver spotted’ variety of Dalmatian. He has green ‘Disney’ eyes and has fewer spots than other Dalmatians. He’s seven years old and has the sweetest, gentlest personality of any dog you’ve ever met. He is exceptionally sneaky though and wins hearts to play the long game of stealing food, but other than that, he is a beautiful, soft, sweet, precious dog with the needs of a prince and the heart and spirit of a kind, caring grandmother. McNulty is barely a dog, he’s a person. Truly one-of-a-kind. GM Where do you like to take him for walks in Subiaco - and which venues are particularly McNultyfriendly in your experience? OC McNulty has enjoyed coming with me to the markets and in general he comes around with me to get art supplies. I often visit Subiaco to get various supplies and props for my art practice from Jacksons, Bunnings and Officeworks - and the op shops (especially Earthwise) - and

GM McNulty often comes along with you to the Subi Farmers Market - what do you love about the market and what makes it special? OC McNulty has a lot of girlfriends at the Farmers Market, and squeals as we approach the market, pretty much as soon as we turn onto Bagot Road. He knows the market and loves coming to see all of his friends there - the stallholders and regular visitors alike - and ALWAYS stops people in their tracks for a pet and to soak in some sweet nothings. We both love the Farmers Market because we’re morning people, it has a great vibe and is a fun place to be on a Saturday morning. GM What are you working on next and how can people get hold of your work/commission you to do a special piece? OC I’ve been privately commissioned by a Shenton Park resident to create another huge two and a half metre botanical artwork, like the special Lake Jualbup piece I created for Shenton Park GP. I’m currently working on that piece and I have a few more houses which have been commissioned for the suburbs of Subiaco and Cottesloe. I am also itching to paint another mural or two this year! If anyone is interested in an artwork or mural they can come and say hi to me in person on Saturdays at Subi Farmers Market or contact me through Instagram or my website :-) @olivechengart/ olivechengart.com

ASK Dr Kin Veterinary Director of Greencross Vets Subiaco, and pet parent to Ashleigh, Bella, Sparkle & Spunky. Q My pet is constantly licking and chewing his skin - what does this mean? A Licking and chewing could be a sign of pruritis (itchy skin) or underlying discomfort. A parasitic (most commonly flea) infestation could be the reason, or seasonal allergies, food intolerances and even osteoarthritic pain. It is always good to keep your pet up to date with parasite prevention. Prevention is always the key to parasitic control. Allergies occur when your pet inhales or comes into contact with something they are sensitive to. Tree and grass pollens, dust and dust mites, mold and mold mites and different types of grasses are the common triggers. Dry grass seeds have also got the potential to pierce and burrow into the skin, causing severe skin reactions and abscesses. Food intolerance can also manifest as pruritis. Bringing your pet in for sixmonthly general health checks is essential for early detection and management of any health issues like osteoarthritis. Visit Greencross Vets Subiaco at 55 Salvado Road.

When in Roma (Republic) . . .
Medical marvels on our doorstep IF YOU’VE NEVER visited the WA Medical Museum at Harvey House on the corner of Railway and Barker Road, prepare to be amazed. Opened in 1986 by a group of medical professionals who saw a need to ensure items of medical history were kept, and, where possible, shared with the general public, it’s a treasure trove of historical medical implements and innovations. Among the many items on display are an iron lung circa 1950s, part of an RFDS plane that was involved in a crash in the 1980s, a WWI army medical chest, and a very rare papier-mâché anatomical model. There is also a radiography room which was used by KEMH to x-ray patients until the 1970s. Even the building which houses the collection is a fascinating reminder of Subiaco’s early years. Built in 1896, Harvey House at first provided 10

accommodation for homeless children, and then was home to the original KEMH, which opened in 1916. Pull a $50 note out of your wallet and you’ll see it featured, next to Edith Cowan's picture. Open one day a week (Wednesdays, between 10.30am and 3.30pm) and entirely staffed by passionate and friendly volunteers, visitors will find exhibits related to radiography, dentistry, midwifery, general surgery and much more. It’s a unique and fascinating insight into how far we’ve come in terms of medical advancements. The WA Medical Museum closes from mid-December until early February each year, and any public holidays should they fall on a Wednesday. Groups are most welcome, but advance booking is required. Special arrangements may be made for large groups.
STEPPING INSIDE ROMA Republic, the new cafe on the corner of Station and Hood Street (where Lot Six Zero used to be) is like watching democracy the way it should work. It’s an inclusive space where everybody seems as happy as Larry, as customers sip luxurious lattes made with beans supplied by longstanding family company, The Northbridge Coffee Roasters. Hosted by Hayley and Simon Martin, this coffee outlet is the third addition to the pair's Craigie and Kinross locations. You might spot them affably whipping up a milkshake or smoothie or serving house-made labneh with poached eggs. Text your order through in advance as they do take-away as well. That said, we are partial to sitting inside, hoeing through breakfast which is served all day.
Bacco takes on Galileo spot
Subiaco landmarks burned in our memories HEAD TO Subiaco Museum to see the work of one of Subiaco’s favourite artists, Olive Cheng, who pays tribute to our suburb’s iconic historic buildings in several works which are for sale. Olive’s wood-burning (pyrography) talents are regularly on show at the Subi Farmers Market, where she draws a crowd while using fine art tools to burn images of wildflowers onto cheeseboards, earrings and baubles. On a recent overseas trip she fell in love with the ancient buildings of the European cities and experienced a light bulb moment. “I came back and saw Subiaco through fresh eyes,” she says. “I had become immersed in beautiful Parisian architecture and then realised we have so much to cherish here in Subiaco and I was no longer envious of European buildings.” She set about using pyrography to sketch then paint Jacksons Drawing Supplies, who purchased it immediately, before turning to the Regal Theatre, Subi Hotel, Lums, Doyle Court and King Edward Memorial Hospital, along with several heritage-listed homes. They will all be on sale at the Subiaco Museum until the end of the year.
THERE’S BEEN A minefield of mythology in Shenton Park around the old Galileo Buona Cucina site since Vincenzo Soresi left the building. But now we can happily report that it is no myth that a hospitality legend is happily ensconced in the Onslow Road restaurant with a brand-new name - Bacco - in Shenton Park. Alessandro Stoccuto, best known for his time at Perugino, Nolita and for the past seven years John Street Cafe in Cottesloe - is delighted to be bringing his Mediterranean cuisine turned out by chef Paolo D’esposito, who has stints at Wildflower and Shorehouse on his resumé. And with the restaurant named after the Roman God of wine, vintage and vices, we can assume we’re all in for a very good time.
Larry’s Charcoal Chicken for those late-night munchies FANS OF SHUI, the searingly successful hospitality collaboration between Leigh Power and Ben Tua, willl soon only have to pop to ONE Subiaco next door to get some more fire in their bellies. In early 2024, the boys are opening their version of charcoal chicken – for a late night feed after sinking a few cocktails. Rokeby Road punters will no doubt spot the pair in full flight as they dash between the two venues, trying to keep up with demand.

Doing the Postal Walk NEVER HAS A gum tree been more grateful. The thoughtful upgrade of the popular Postal Walk included new decking to protect and support the root system of the existing flooded gum tree. Pop by and give the tree a hug and you will no longer be in danger of tripping over the roots as some Subi residents have done in the past. The upgrade also includes additional seating, new arches at its eastern end and a gate by artist Robert Frith to tap into the site’s history as a former PostmasterGeneral’s Office. And there’s good news for the former Subiaco Primary School students who, as part of the Subiaco Centenary, designed – with three other schools – 100 tiles with which artists Jenny Dawson and Sandra Hill created a mosaic. Jenny has now converted those tiles into five aluminium panels which are set into the new deck and paving. Nobody was more delighted than former student Nick Teraci, who still frequents the area when popping in for a Saturday coffee at Citizens of Brew-Ha and admires his handiwork featuring Subi wildlife. “I was only eight years old when I painted that tile," he says. “I wasn’t 12

Diamond Collective adds more sparkle to Rokeby Road
DIAMONDS MIGHT BE a girl’s best friend but the industry which turns rough stones into sparklers adorning female hands has traditionally been dominated by the boys. Now, thanks to a joint venture by Parys McClean and Kate Bishop, who have worked together in the Perth industry for several years, there’s a fresh new sprinkling of feminine glitter and glamour for jewellery buyers at the bottom end of Rokeby Road. Diamond Collective opened their store opposite the Subi Hotel in August and have since been inundated with clients seeking their services in designing bespoke pieces of jewellery in a non-intimidating environment with
diamonds the pair source independently. Here, customers are shown 3D videos featuring diamonds from all around the world, then choose which ones could be incorporated into a bespoke design crafted in Perth. “It’s a much more educational approach,” says Kate. “The client gets taken through the grading system of diamonds and there is more control over the quality.” And, if you are thinking of popping the question soon, Diamond Collective are happy to help. "Engaged couples make up a big percentage of our customers," says Parys.

Take your pick ACCORDING TO JEN Lowe, Owner/ Director of Central Agency, it’s an exciting time to live in Subiaco. “As the suburb is increasingly seen as one of the most vibrant parts of the Western Suburbs, more and more people are opting to invest in the suburb, choosing to build architecturally interesting homes, or planning sensational renovations in which aesthetic takes equal focus with function,” she says. Central Agency has some beautiful homes on their books currently, many of which have not yet been sold, designed by talented local architects such as Debra Brown and Beth George, and other award-winning Australian architects such as Vokes and Peters. “We also have some new, interesting self-contained apartments appearing above garages which will provide additional accommodation for people into the future, within our existing footprint,” says Jen. “The housing mix in Subiaco is diverse enough to cater to all groups and all budgets. Between the olive trees, fledgling vines, and mismatched bentwoods on the alfresco, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were, indeed, somewhere in coastal Greece. Your palate will take you there, too, with ancient Greek-inspired dishes that any yiayia would be proud of - think sour cherry dolmades, tzatziki, and homemade loukaniko sausages. Even a handful of renowned Greek wine varieties are on the menu, including a Cretan Assyrtiko and tannin-heavy Macedonian xinomavro.

Dilly Dally/Bar Loiter 87 Rokeby Road, Subiaco Dilly Dally’s moody, cosy interior is the perfect place to hunker down in winter. But, come summer, the second-storey balcony is the place to be. It faces busy Rokeby Road, but still feels somewhat secluded thanks to the treetop canopies gently obscuring the view. You can easily while away the afternoon here, sharing a honey and kale porchetta pizza and sipping on raspberry and prosecco spritz. For a change of scenery, head out back to Bar Loiter’s alfresco. The drinks list is the same, but the atmosphere is entirely different.

La Condesa All good stories start with tequila. At La Condesa, a Tulum-inspired Mexican cantina by Perth hospitality heavyweight Clint Nolan, there are 150 of them and their smokier counterpart, mezcal, to choose from. The assortment of bottles is at home in the bar’s rendered and recessed wall niches, which lend a typically beachside feel to the cantina. Paired with warm terracotta tiling, wavy timber tabletops, and pops of oceanic blue, it all feels decidedly breezy and miles away from the hubbub of busy Hay Street. In the dining room, high tables set for eight welcome larger groups and are more than big enough to hold plenty of share-style dishes. Build your menu with selections from the starters, tacos, and mains, or take any indecision out of the equation by going for the set menu (only available for groups of eight or more).

They’ve had fun fitting out the place, choosing more maximalist details like a sculptural, calicodraped ceiling, sunburst back bar, and neon-accented arched mirrors. They’re details that, on paper, sound like a mismatched bunch, but, in situ, just seem to work. Leigh’s Asianinspired menu is much the same. Burnt cauliflower and cured kingfish spring rolls are hardly everyday flavours and preparations, though Shui makes a good argument for why they should be. HALF FULL WITH THE BARS OF SUBIACO PROVING TO BE AN ONGOING HIT, BROOKE HUNTER SUGGESTS WHICH SUMMER DROPS WILL SEE YOU THROUGH THE WARM WEATHER IN STYLE. Ahh, summer in Subi. With hot days giving way to beautiful, balmy nights, Subiaco’s finest alfresco bars and breweries offer the perfect opportunity to while away the evening enjoying a refreshing drink in good company. Think juicy, mouth-watering pinot gris, chardonnays or rieslings with bursts of citrus, apples and stone fruit. You could almost imagine you’re sitting with a view of the Mediterranean, a rosé or pet nat in hand as the sun sets. It certainly isn’t hard with all the French-inspired bars around Subiaco town. If you’re after something a little different, summer spritzes will go down a treat, and help you to recover from the afternoon sun. What about a cold brew, I hear you say? Bar Amelie
Cherubino City Cellar
Covering select regions within Western Australia, Australia and France, Bar Amelie will take you on a journey through the best wines of the season. Inspired by the French film Amelie, their mission is simple - to make others happy. Bar Amelie Manager Jordan Hall says his top summer wine is the Coffele Ca' Visco Soave Classico DOC. A white wine from Veneto, Northern Italy, and made from Garganega and Trebbiano grapes, this is a special vintage wine that goes down a treat. “A good soave is an amazing grape variety which is way too easy to drink,” he said. With common flavours of peach and citrus, the soave has a subtle note of saltiness. “It is a light-bodied style much like a sauvignon blanc or pinot gris, but often with a smooth oily like richness that adds a little extra punch.” By the glass, small $17, large $28 By the bottle, $83
With a commitment to crafting and importing wines that genuinely express the unique sense of place from which they originate, you will be forgiven for thinking you were in the Côtes de Provence when sipping on a wine at Cherubino City Cellar. Sommelier Clement Dufeu and Venue Manager Jonathan Diaz have meticulously picked out the best wines for the summer season. First off is the Linea Retta - Gavi. With strong notes of green apples, peach and apricot, the Gavi is a winemaking collaboration between two renowned winemakers: Italy’s Giorgio Rivetti and Larry Cherubino. “It's a dry, steely Italian character, a perfect light and easy drinking wine to recover from the sun,” Jonathan said. “Dense fruit and long, delicate notes of white flowers with flavourful finish. It’s a nice summery wine.” By the bottle, $43
Finally, for those beer drinkers, Cherubino City Cellar has one they import themselves from Italy: the Birra Oi - Ambrata “A product made entirely by the producer! Oi carries out the entire beer production process itself, from raw materials to bottling. Ambrata is a beer with very elegant bubbles, an almost salmon colour, notes of caramel, toast and vanilla. The drinkability of this beer is surprisingly appreciable even with these aromatic notes.” Schooner, $15
Next up is the Cherubino Grenache Rosé. “An Australian dose of Côtes de Provence, this rosé has spent time in barrels, reminding us of that French style,” Jonathan said. “With notes of red fruit, pomegranate, roses and a very nice balance, this is a more than pleasant
Cherubino City Cellar
Meanwhile, Jordan’s top beer for the summer is any Hazy. “We rotate one of our taps to feature a local craft brewer. Currently we have the Beer Farm Hazy on tap.” Pint, $12.
If you’re after something a little darker in colour, but with a refreshing taste, Jonathan and Clement have suggested the Monthelie Douhairet Porcheret - Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière. “A burgundy pinot noir located in the south of the Côte de Beaune, the Marange appellation is an underdog, a delicate price for a pinot with character. This pinot has notes of raspberry and red currant, grey pepper and woody notes.” By the bottle, $97

Juanita’s Bar The team at Juanita’s know a thing or two about creating a buzzing neighbourhood bar. And with casual alfresco dining, the bar provides the perfect chilled out setting to while away the evening, wine in hand. Small-scale wines and winemakers dominate the drinks list, with the unique addition of house-made wines. Juanita’s owner and Chef Luke Foyle says his top wine for the summer is a new version of the Juanita’s House White. “A white blend of pinot gris, Riesling, viognier, and Gewurztraminer,” he said.
“We call it Pinot Gris & Friends. It is fresh, bright, dry and crispy. Perfect to be drunk in the sun on a warm arvo.” By the glass, $14 By the bottle, $60
La Bastide Encapsulating a French bistro vibe, La Bastide’s Michelle Natta and Rob Breden’s drink of choice for the summer is, of course, the rosé. “We’re a French bistro, so it has to be rosé, or ’summer water’ as we like to call it. With a lower alcohol content than other wines, it is the perfect apéritif for a sunny afternoon on the La Bastide terrace,” Rob said. Their choice of rosés by the glass (or the bottle) includes the Bastide du Claux Côtes du Luberon Poudriere, Chateau d'Esclans Côtes du Provence Whispering Angel and Chateau de Pibarnon Bandol. “Pair it with a plate of petites bouchées (snacks) like our housecured olives, spiced cured salmon or selection of charcuterie or French cheese. Many Provençal rosés also have the versatility and body to accompany more substantial dishes such as our steak tartare, tuna salad niçoise and even our magret de canard (duck breast).” Bastide du Claux Côtes du Luberon Poudriere, $14 a glass Chateau d'Esclans Côtes du Provence Whispering Angel, $22 a glass Chateau de Pibarnon Bandol, $29 a glass Alternatively, if you like cocktails and a little zing, then you must try La Bastide’s super refreshing Saint Germain Spritz. “A fragrant spin on a classic cocktail mixing vibrant French elderflower liqueur with French crémant (sparkling wine),” Michelle said. Or if you want to go for a truly classic French cocktail, there’s
always a Kir Royale. A blend of Créme de Cassis - a sweet, dark red liqueur made from blackcurrants and French crémant, this drink is a berry-flavoured enhancement on your favourite glass of bubbles. “It’s as pretty to look at as it is delicious to drink,” said Rob.
Bark Having worked in hospitality for more than 10 years, you’ll find Bark Venue Manager Cassie Barrett behind the bar chatting jovially with the regular customers or giving the free sample beers a ‘quality check’. “As Venue Manager I look after all the events here at Bark – and I enjoy getting up and about for a bit of ‘market research’ so I know how to make your day extra special.” Cassie’s top beer for the summer is Finlay's Jakes Point IPA. Brewed in Kalbarri, this is a favourite crafty find.

STOREHOUSE SUBIACO
Cocktail of choice: Gin Basil Smash
Cocktail of choice: Summer Breeze
Gin is to summer what parmesan is to pasta; you can’t have one without the other.
Storehouse Subiaco’s rooftop terrace really comes into its own in summer.
As the air temperature trends upwards, cocktail menus around Subiaco are shedding their heavier flavours and leaning right into the bright juniper-based spirit. Even Lums - generally lauded for its breadth of local and international, classic and contemporary wines - is getting in on the gin action. Venue manager Ariane DuBois prefers to let the citrusy notes of the spirit do most of the talking in her understated summer alfresco favourite. “The ‘Gin Basil Smash’ is a delightful blend of gin, fresh basil leaves, simple syrup, and a generous squeeze of zesty lemon juice,” she explains. Shaken and served over ice, the cocktail is best enjoyed in the delicious warmth of the bar’s alfresco area. It’s incredibly refreshing . . . like sipping on a garden in full bloom but with a sophisticated twist. The Gin Basil Smash joins just four other cocktails on a rather concise cocktail menu, though the bar is happy to cater to whatever your summer self desires. Of course, there is plenty for the wine drinker too, with an impressive list of rosè, orange, chilled reds, and light, bright, tangy whites to choose from.
As the barometer rises, trying to keep patrons indoors is futile. At least not when there’s the option to sit on a breezy outdoor terrace, 12 storeys up and with a view to rival all views (whatever the weather, thanks to outdoor heaters for cooler nights). There’s nowhere else quite like it in Subiaco, with its east-facing panorama of the ever-expanding Perth city skyline and rolling Darling Scarp. And just wait until you see it at sunset . . . According to Assistant Bar Manager Gokhan Imam, the best way to enjoy the space is with a ‘Summer Breeze’ in hand. It’s a bright beverage made with lashings of Giniversity botanical gin, strawberries, mint, thyme, and cuvée brut; all blended to let the Margaret River gin shine. “It’s incredibly light, fragrant and refreshing,” he says. “The perfect cocktail to help you get through Perth’s hot summer days. At Storehouse, we believe a cocktail is more than just a drink; it’s about the experience and sipping with people that you enjoy spending time with and creating new memories.” Well said, Gokhan. Cocktail of choice: Backyard Mai Tai
Cocktail of choice: Golden Triangle
Best known for his contributions to Perth’s tequila scene, Clint Nolan’s summer cocktail of choice is a surprising departure from the agave-based spirit.
You needn’t be joining the hordes of swimmers cooling off in the Indian Ocean to get that summer feeling.
“My summer cocktail pick would have to be the Backyard Mai Tai - our take on the retro Tiki icon,” says Clint. It’s the summertime star of Bar Banter’s cocktail menu, a big and boozy blend of rum, cachaca, gin, Campari, and triple sec, lifted with a dash of almondy orgeat and fresh lime. “There's something about the classic tropical combination of zesty lime and a generous pour of Jamaican rum paired with almond syrup and the citrussy-spice notes of Campari. It’s truly like sipping on summer in a glass,” says Clint. Sitting in the bar’s large alfresco, surrounded by blooming birds of paradise only amplifies that summer feeling tenfold. The space is tucked into a laneway behind Clint's other Subiaco-based venue, La Condesa, and exemplifies the cool, inner-city hangout. Cobalt blue stools and a dragonfly-covered recycled art installation by students at Subiaco Primary School brighten up an otherwise industrial outlook, and a concise yet chic menu makes this spot the real deal. 34

According to the manager and cocktail guru at Bar Amelie, Jordan Hall, all it takes is citrus, native botanicals, and a bit of sunshine on the bar’s streetfront alfresco decking to make summer the best time of year in Subiaco. Jordan’s Rokeby Road workplace may be 7.5 kilometres from the nearest beach, but he manages to bring the coastline to his patrons, chilled and on ice (but without the inconvenience of sandy feet). Of all the cocktails on the Bar Amelie menu, Hall’s summer favourite is the Golden Triangle - "one of our originals.” He describes his pick as ‘pure summer in a glass’, the native bush thyme and lemon myrtle syrups really bringing the essence of Perth’s coastline and its abundant native flowers to the gin and lemon base. Double down on the summer seaside flavours and order a glass or two with a shared kingfish ceviche, beetroot vodka cured salmon, or a plate of tempura whiting. You'll be a true Indian Ocean local in no time with all of the above at your disposal.

IN A MOVE IT SEEMS WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR, MARKETS IN SUBI ARE BACK, BABY, AND WE COULDN’T BE MORE THRILLED. By GABI MILLS & SLOANE CARVELL.
BAG A BARGAIN or all Subiaco’s impressive recent conjuring tricks to regenerate and rise, phoenixlike, there was still perhaps a missing piece to the puzzle. As new venues, unique shops and bars opened their doors in recent years, there was that sentimental wish by many locals for a return of the markets which people remembered made Subi such a hotspot in days gone by. Now, some 15 years after Subiaco Pavilion Markets shut its doors, Subiaco will be home to at least three markets with offerings sure to encourage a further uptick in visitor 36

THE CITY IS PROUD TO BE SUPPORTING THE NIGHT MARKETS TO BRING ADDITIONAL BUZZ AND VIBRANCY TO SUBIACO OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS. ~ DAVID McMULLEN, CITY OF SUBIACO MAYOR
HEART OF THE COMMUNITY The return of markets to Subiaco has brought crowds keen to experience local produce and friendly service from stallholders.
numbers to 6008. After a well-attended launch of the ONE Subiaco markets' offering on October 7 (with a further two markets planned for November and December), Subiaco is set to experience a weekly culinary and cultural evolution with the exciting arrival of the Subi Night Market. Every Saturday night, from November 11 to April 6, Market Square Park will transform into a vibrant food-lovers and community hub - tempting the senses with a heady array of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes. It’s such a welcome addition to the fabric of Subi’s burgeoning destination status that we’re celebrating not just this new kid on the block but also the original and best farmers market, which you’ll find every Saturday morning in the primary school’s grounds.
Summer nights just got an upgrade Developed from the concept of a traditional 'market square', Subi Night Market will provide a leafy, central space where locals and visitors alike can come together in celebration of a community that honours great food, family connection and live music. Lovers of secondhand and thrift will also be treated to Preloved Lane - a one-stop spot for vintage and secondhand fashion. It’s a concept that aims to bring a European-inspired village atmosphere direct to Subiaco as visitors dine at Parisian bistro-style tables and chairs, or relax on the grass listening to live music. They can peruse the preloved and vintage clothing market before wandering through the streets of Subiaco to linger longer at one of the many humming after-dark venues. In short, it’s the perfect aperitif to a
night out in Subiaco. At the very heart of Subi Night Market is a love of fantastic food. A selection of Perth's finest popup food stalls has been curated to tantalise the tastebuds with an exciting mix of over 40 international cuisines, gourmet delicacies, and Insta-worthy desserts. It's a gastronomic adventure waiting to be explored and savoured. Local distillery Spirit of Little Things will be whipping up a range of botanical tipples perfect for sipping on as the sun sets in the park. Their innovative and deliciously chilled spirits promise to be the perfect complement to your culinary exploration, and inspire you to continue your Saturday night journey onward to the many local bars in Subi. But the Subi Night Market isn't just about food and drinks; it's a celebration of fashion sustainability, local artists and galleries. Preloved Lane, a treasure trove of lightly loved fashion, embraces the circular economy, giving shoppers the opportunity to find something special while reducing their environmental footprint. Local art and artists will be on show throughout the season to tempt even the finest of art connoisseurs. There’s a soundtrack to all this too as the warm evening air will be filled with acoustic melodies from local musicians, as you eat, drink and EDITION 13 | 2023

connect in this relaxed and effortlessly sophisticated space. Even your family fur baby (on a lead of course) is encouraged to come along and enjoy the famously balmy WA summer nights, with Market Square epitomising what park dreams are made of. Getting to the Subi Night Market couldn’t be easier, with the train station right next door. Walking, riding or catching the train is highly encouraged as we all work towards treading lighter on our precious planet. So, mark your calendars and prepare to immerse yourself in the Subi Night Market, a place where food, drink, music, art and preloved fashion converge to create unforgettable Saturday night memories in the heart of Subiaco. What: Subi Night Market When: Every Saturday from 11 November until 6 April, 2024, from 4 to 9pm. More info: Visit subinightmarket.com.au
What they say: Subi Night Market would not be possible without the incredible support from the City of Subiaco and DevelopmentWA. “The City is proud to be supporting the night markets to bring additional buzz and vibrancy to Subiaco over the summer months," City of Subiaco Mayor David McMullen said. “As key sponsor, City staff have worked swiftly to make this opportunity a reality for Subiaco. “I encourage everyone to come along on a warm summer Saturday and spend time exploring Subiaco’s many great restaurants, retailers and bars.” Acting CEO of DevelopmentWA, Fiona Barclay, agreed with the Mayor. "We are working hard to play our part in revitalising Subiaco through our Subi East redevelopment," she said. " We are proud to support community focused activities like the new night markets." 38

Flavours
of the
WORLD
Forget shelling out on an expensive airline ticket; world flavours are only a few kilometres away at Subi Farmers Market. You can experience an atlas of global flavours here every Saturday morning. Just make your choice, find a dish and take a seat at the Subi Farmers Market on a Saturday morning. Here’s Sloane Carvell's picks of the international stalls you’ll find this summer at SFM.
Home Flavours Brazilian Street Food Home Flavours are bringing the taste of Brazil to SFM. Gabriela and Cinthya are experienced chefs who have started their own business. Delicious empadas can be found at their stall – just look for the market-goers patiently waiting near the veggie stalls next door. Empadas are a traditional Brazilian pie, with flavours like chicken and cream cheese, beef, salmon and heart of palm. They also have a beautiful Bolo de Cenoura, which is a marble carrot cake using
Tokyo Alley Street Food
WA purple carrots with a spiced dark chocolate ganache. My favourite Home Flavours offering is the Pão de Queijo, a warm Brazilian cheese bread which are the perfect snack and trust me when I say you cannot stop at one.
Tokyo Alley Street Food Tokyo Alley Street Food’s passion is serving up fresh Japanese street food and, judging by the queue on a Saturday morning, it speaks volumes about its tastiness. The most popular dish is their okonomiyaki, a Japanese savoury pancake, usually consisting of batter mixed with ingredients like cabbage, meat, or seafood and topped with a sauce and bonito flakes. Tokyo Alley Street Food’s okonomiyaki is made with a western twist - it's topped with streaky bacon making it perfect for an Aussie breakfast! They also make yakisoba, a Japanese stir fried noodle.

smooth, and firm enough to hold the tart together to the last bite. It’s literally perfect. In fact, it’s what dessert dreams are made of.
Florence Fine Foods
TASTE OF SUMMER On any given Saturday morning, the Subi Farmers Market has a wide selection of stallholders offering delicious wares.
Francesco and Cristina of Florence Fine Foods are bringing their traditional Italian flavours to SFM. Chef Francesco worked as a professional chef after attending culinary school in Spoleto and has worked at starred restaurants in Europe. Meanwhile, Cristina has a background in hospitality and has worked in luxe hotels as well as a fine dining restaurant in Spoleto. They have a beautiful range of gourmet products available at the market made by Francesco such as pestos, fresh sauces like Napoletana, Romesco and mushroom, as well as homemade fresh pasta, Italian truffle products, marinated olives and artichokes. The basil pesto is one of the best I have ever tried - try it with some fresh casarecce pasta to cook at home. They have also recently opened a lunch spot in the city for pasta and have their own private catering business.
baker and pastry chef Bala, including his highly sought-after sausage rolls and the most delicious Indian chicken curry puff you will ever try. Think flaky pastry generously filled with chicken curry on the inside - they are so hard to stop at one. Bala’s baked goods include pastries, cinnamon buns and beautiful fruit loafs too, and keep an eye out for fruit mince pies during the run-up to Christmas.
Popii I am a sucker for a Pastéis de Nata or a Portuguese custard tart or two. Natasha and Steven, Popii owners, have nailed these with a crispy, flaky pastry around a rich custard filling with a hint of cinnamon that has been baked to have a caramelised top. The custard is luxurious and EDITION 13 | 2023

WHEN JETTING OFF SOMEWHERE, LOOKING THE PART AND BEING IN COMFORTABLE, FUNCTIONAL CLOTHING MAKES FOR HAPPY TRAVELLERS – EVEN BETTER, YOU’LL FIND A GREAT RANGE RIGHT HERE IN SUBIACO. By DIANNE BORTOLETTO.
Travel light I
’ve learned my packing lessons the hard way. I spent a month travelling around Egypt wearing my friend’s pants that were two sizes too big for me because I packed the wrong clothes. I spent three weeks hobbling around Italy after rolling my ankle on a hike wearing unsuitable shoes. And I missed out on dip at a stunning infinity pool in Vietnam because I didn’t have swimmers. Nowadays, I take packing very seriously, always opting for function first, with style and comfort equal second.
Feet first When it comes to shoes, make a beeline for the B Store and look for Birkenstocks, Fitflops, Teva and Frankie4 shoes if your travels include a lot of walking. Stride Shoes is another good choice stocking shoes that offer support and style from brands including Ecco, Hush Puppies, Carbello, Naot and Ziera. Marie Claire, Hobbs and Dimario Shoes offer a large choice of fashion forward styles with Dimario also stocking some beautiful pashminas and scarves. My biggest tip for European travels is leave the heels at home. Heels and cobblestones 40
Eat Shop Live
are not a good combination. And for outback or country travels, choose closed-toe shoes. Getting gravel, dirt, dust and sand in your sandals isn’t pleasant.
Clothes maketh the man (and woman) Ditch the backpacker attire and choose items that will make you feel put together for any occasion when you’re travelling. Go for stylish cuts made with fabrics that are creaseresistant, light, and breathable. It is worth investing in pieces that will take you from day to night and from conference to the beach. Clothes you can dress up and dress down are key to good packing. Can a shirt dress also work as a light, open jacket over a camisole and pants? Do pants work with both sandals and sneakers? Clothing brands that tout that they are made for travel include Mela Purdie and Verge, both available from Iisie boutique. Like Mela Purdie, Picnic stocks clothes made with Japanese polyester which are made in WA. Also referred to as technical silk, the fabric is excellent for travelling because it’s lightweight, breathable
and wash-and-wear. It’s better in humid climates and it’s worth noting that it can become static in dry heat. Linen can be a great choice for travel, but it depends on your comfort level when it comes to creases. I like the creased linen look, but it’s not for everyone. That said, not all linens are created equal. Quality French linens with more weight tend to crease a little less and wear better. Look out for linen pieces in Flannel and Kristin Magrit, the latter also stocking hemp clothing, a fantastic and sustainable fabric that feels like linen but creases less. Both brands focus on sustainability and creating clothes to last. Decjuba has a solid range of bamboo basics which are perfect for travelling too.
Pre-loved for a reason Once you know the kinds of clothes you want to take with you, consider pre-loved fashion. Head to Lucy in Disguise for vintage clothes, The Green Pear, The Secret Closet and Sal Vage Studio (appointment only) for designer consignment, and Good Sammy, Salvos, Reloved Fashion and Opportunity Knocks op shops. You'll save money which means more spending cash on your travels.

PACKING TIPS FOR ANY DESTINATION
Check the weather
Days before you depart, check the temperature at your destination. Is rain expected, is it humid, or are night temperatures cool?
2
What will you be doing?
Consider the activities you’ll be doing, such as hiking or shopping in cities or relaxing in a resort, as well as what events you’ll be attending such as fancy dinners or a work conference. Equally, pack comfy clothes if you’re likely to stay in most nights and self-cater.
3
Start with shoes
Three pairs of shoes are a good number. What do you need from your shoes for this trip? Style or comfort? Warmth or breathability? Once you
have chosen your shoes, then you can build outfits from the ground up.
4
Create a capsule
The key to packing is to create a travel capsule wardrobe and keep it to one or two neutral colours. Try to ensure every item of clothing and footwear works back with each other, which will provide you with multiple outfits for varying occasions. Layering is key. Opt for a jacket, blazer and/or cardigan that works with all the base layers.
5
Place it all out in front of you
Put everything including shoes, hats, bags and accessories in one place. I lay everything out on the bed and ensure that every top is going to work with every bottom, as well as
ensuring I have enough tops, pants, etc. This is where a capsule wardrobe is valuable because each separate is designed to work back with each other.
6
Fabric choice
“I love ironing on holidays,” said no one, ever. Think about packing clothes with fabrics that don’t need ironing and don’t crush easily Bamboo, cotton jersey, technical silk, scuba, ponte, and other blend stretch fabrics, as well as light knits like merino wool and cashmere are perfect. For trips longer than one week, consider clothes that are easy to wash and wear.
7
Black tee
If you have the bottoms sorted, then a black tee is all you need to extend your travel wardrobe. I always fly in black T-shirt. Add accessories for a night out, wear trainers for daytime sight-seeing.

Traditional wrapping paper is perfectly fabulous to use, but if you fancied something just a little more unusual, consider, for a start, varying the paper when wrapping a present. These tips work well at this festive time of the year, but you can use these ideas year-round. A lot of good wrapping can be done with brown paper or a plain brown paper bag. Grab crayons or make a potato stamp and produce your own unique designs. If you or your kids are crafty, get creative and draw, glue or attach things, just like an art project. Your kids will feel they contributed to the process. Plus, it’s a great way to add value to a not-soexpensive present. Melted crayons on brown paper can also make fun random wrapping. Knitters can use leftover pieces of yarn to tie in interesting ways or braid a rope to wrap with. During the festive season, it’s also nice to top a present with some pretty greenery from the garden, tied sprigs of rosemary, a flower, candy cane, dove ornament or a beach shell. RESCUE
ME
THERE’S A SAYING THAT THE BEST BREED OF DOG IS A RESCUE DOG, AND AS SHENTON PARK’S DOGS’ REFUGE HOME BRACES FOR ANOTHER BUMPER FESTIVE SEASON, DIANNE BORTOLETTO MEETS SOME OF THE VERY GOOD BOYS (AND GIRLS) LOOKING FOR A FOREVER HOME.

O
wning a dog is one of life’s most rewarding experiences. Like all rewards, it takes some work but the more you put in, the more you’ll get back. Whether it’s welcoming a puppy or adopting an older dog, those in the know say make sure it’s a rescue dog. Karen Rhodes, President of the Dogs’ Refuge Home in Shenton Park, says adopting her pitbull was the best thing she’s ever done. “My first rescue was in 2006, a boy called Homer who was neglected and mistreated. It took some work initially,
but he changed my life immeasurably for the better. I’d adopt him a thousand times over,” Karen says. “He was the softest, most gentle and forgiving dog ever, especially considering how badly he'd been treated before. “Knowing the Dogs’ Refuge Home had saved him and kept him safe left me feeling so grateful it made me want to give back and help them to save more dogs, and I've been doing that ever since. “With big dogs, there’s more to love. They are usually such cuddlers and they tend to be less work. They’re often couch potatoes, much more than small dogs – Jack Russells and kelpies are smaller but are high energy dogs that need an hour-anda-half exercise each day. So, I’d say, consider a larger dog.” Karen says that with all dogs, new owners need to adopt the 3-3-3 rule - three days, three weeks, and three months - to set their dog up for success. Allow three days to let your new family member decompress and just get used to their new surrounds. They may not feel comfortable to be themselves and they might be shut down or test the boundaries. Then there’s three weeks of settling in. The dogs start to wonder if this could possibly be their forever home. They start getting into a routine and behaviour issues may start to show so it’s important you do the training, desensitise and socialise your dog with other dogs (in a controlled
environment) and people (potentially including children) to see what they are comfortable with. In three months, after you’ve built a bond, a trust and a sense of security, the dog in front of you is the dog you’ll have for life. “Training a puppy or a dog is so important to set them up for success. It takes work, commitment and discipline, but it’s also fun for both you and the dog. It’s so important because once trained, you’ll have a dog who will be a lovable member of the family.” WA’s largest shelter and re-homing centre, the Dogs’ Refuge Home cares for lost, surrendered, abandoned, and mistreated animals. The registered charity, pound and adoption centre prides itself on providing the best possible care and enrichment for dogs while new forever homes are found. Opened in 1935, Perth’s oldest animal charity cares for about 1,400 dogs and puppies which are rescued and rehomed each year. It houses about 120 dogs at any one time, including dogs in quarantine. The Dogs’ Refuge Home is desperate to find foster carers and new owners for homeless hounds. “There are more puppies and more dogs than ever needing homes and foster carers. In fact, there are just too many dogs in WA – the last thing we need is people breeding dogs. Please don’t. “It’s not just us, all dog rescues across WA are at or over capacity and we’re seeing more puppies and unsterilised dogs than ever before. People must sterilise their dogs, I can’t stress that enough,” Karen says. “Recently there was an old girl who was 10 to 12 years old at a local pound who had given birth over night to four dead puppies and one that was very, very ill. She arrived at our home the next day and was taken straight to Subiaco Vets. Within two hours, after an X-ray, they were operating on her and found four more dead puppies inside her. It was so tragic, and what makes me
angry is that it’s preventable with sterilisation. Thankfully this girl is now doing so well and enjoying the love and care she’s probably never known before. Subiaco Vets are fantastic, and I can’t thank them enough for everything that they do for us.” Sterilisation and vaccination are two key messages that Karen wants all dog owners to follow. Without vaccination, dogs, and especially puppies, are susceptible to the highly contagious parvovirus or ‘parvo’, a viral disease of dogs that commonly causes acute gastrointestinal illness in puppies. The disease most often strikes in pups between six and 20 weeks old causing death. Vaccination at six weeks of age, 12 weeks, and at 12 months prevents parvo, but it’s best to have annual vaccinations thereafter. “The sweetest and saddest little puppy called Dobby came in from the pound with parvo, he arrived and appeared healthy, but 12 hours later he was vomiting and had diarrhea. He was sent straight to an emergency vet in Swan, was put on a drip, given antibiotics, and gut protectors. The poor little thing struggled, and his pain and suffering is so easily preventable with vaccination.”
All dogs adopted from the Dogs’ Refuge Home come vaccinated, microchipped and sterilised (pups have this included in the adoption fee). The Dogs’ Refuge Home motto is “rescue is the best breed”. It is almost entirely self-funded, relying on community support to fund its operations. The Refuge has a pro-life policy and does not euthanise any healthy, re-homeable animal in its care. LUNA
WILLOW
LOVELY LUNA IS a five-year-old Border Collie cross American Staffy. This sweet, well-mannered girl will make a wonderful companion. Luna is looking for a quiet home where she can enjoy plenty of cuddles and a relaxing lifestyle. She can feel a little anxious at times and is choosy of her dog friends, so she'd prefer to be the only dog in the home so she can have you all to herself! She isn't the dog park type of gal, but she has made plenty of doggy friends with other polite, friendly dogs who respect her space. Luna is suitable for full time workers after a decent settling in period and once she is feeling totally comfortable in her new home.
JELLYBEAN
JELLYBEAN IS FULL of life and curiosity and doesn’t want to miss the fun around! She is after active owners who will include her in daily and weekend adventures. The girl can run and run and run, she would make the best fitness buddy, jogging, hiking, biking around town. Jellybean is a bouncy girl who sometimes forgets her manners. She'd love to learn some more tricks and sharpen up her manners with further training. After she uses up all that energy, she jumps onto your lap and tries to convince you that she is a 5kg lap dog! 60

WILLOW IS A super sweet girl. She is a four-year-old Shar Pei cross Labrador. She takes a bit of time to build her confidence with new people but once she does, she loves to soak up all the affection. Willow can make new dog friends, but she also can be unsure and fearful as a result of not being socialised at a young age. It is important that work is done with her in this regard so she can be set up for success in these scenarios. An experienced dog owner and further training guidance will help set Willow up for success. This girl will prefer a quiet home and lifestyle. She really is a lovely, sweet girl who deserves the chance at her best life.
CEASAR
CEASAR IS THE biggest boy with the biggest heart. He is a four-yearold Mastiff and is such a lovely boy with a tail that does not stop wagging! This big boy is full of love and looking for a forever home with people who can take him out on lots of rewarding adventures. He is so excited to see all the sights and kiss all the people. Ceasar has a bit to learn when it comes to appropriate manners and polite greetings. He’s so full of love, he just can’t contain himself at this stage. He has tested well with dogs at the refuge and could live with a doggy friend of similar stature.
HUNTA THE SWEETEST SENIOR! At 10 years old, Hunta didn't think he'd find himself here at the Refuge for the second time in his life. He is an absolute love bug. His favourite spot is right next to you, and he will be your shadow and follow you wherever you go. As he has entered his golden years, he prefers the slow life, gentle walks of about 20 minutes is plenty for him. Have you got the perfect retirement home for this sweet boy?
COOEE
COOEE IS OUR resident dingo. He is six years old and will need to go home with owners who have a little knowledge about dingo behaviour or are willing to read up on this. He is a sweet boy but can be very aloof at times. He likes things to be on his terms and he acts more like a cat than a dog! He will need a calm home with low foot traffic and minimum visitors, which would be great for this sweet boy to settle in to after such a long time in kennel life.
WHAT DO VOLUNTEERS DO? Volunteers at the Dogs’ Refuge Home can do a number of tasks, including walking the dogs, assisting in the office, gardening, driving to different locations to pick up dogs and drop them off, and helping with fundraising events.
Not just for Christmas A dog is not just for Christmas, they're for life. Every dog needs a settling in period. “It's important to have a calm settling in period, not lots of busy parties and guests coming and going, only to then leave the dog alone when everyone goes back to work,” says Karen Rhodes, President of the Dogs’ Refuge Home. “There's pros and cons for getting a dog for Christmas, but as long as it's a rescue dog and a dog that is going to be loved for a lifetime,
anytime is a good time to adopt.” In order of priority, Karen says the Dogs’ Refuge Home needs: 1. People to adopt dogs 2. Foster carers 3. Donations 4. Volunteers 5. Help to spread the news that the Dogs’ Refuge Home needs help – tell friends, family and anyone who’ll listen.
Santa Paws and In the Dog House Sunday 3 December It’s Santa Paws! Bring your dog to the refuge for a photo with Santa. A volunteer dresses as the big red man and your beloved fur baby can get their Christmas photo thanks to the generosity of photographer Alex Cearns of Houndstooth Studios donating her time. There’s also a mini-market jumble sale that includes Christmas decorations. Although they’re not in trouble,
Dogs’ Refuge Home is open to the public seven days a week from 11am to 4pm. 30 Lemnos Street, Shenton Park Ph 08 9381 8166
they are still going to the dog house. On the same day as Santa Paws, ‘In the Dog House’ is a fundraising event where people sit in a kennel with a dog for a day and raise money through sponsorship.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO SET YOUR GOAL WITH KINDNESS AND LOVE FOR YOURSELF BECAUSE YOU’RE WORTH THE EFFORT, TIME AND MONEY TO FEEL FANTASTIC ~ NICOLA GARCIA, TEMPLE LANE
Health and fitness goals are known to top the New Year’s resolution charts, and for good reason. A healthy body and mind trickle into most aspects of our lives and make them better, too. Many of us use this time of year to make grandiose statements like “run a marathon” or “lose 10 kilograms”, which might be worthy aspirations, but without daily practice, they can fall flat. Pressed Earth Juices co-owner Zoe Kelsey (@pressed_earth) says health is a ‘long game’ for her which is achieved with daily habits practised with consistency. “For me, to move every day is number one, especially in the outdoors or in the company of others because of the impact it has on my physical and mental health, and overall sense of wellbeing,” Zoe says. “I go to the gym with my husband Luke and the same small group. I practise yoga, walk or ride to school with the kids – all of it impacts everything else, it reduces stress, improves my focus and mood, my confidence. I eat better, sleep better!”
Eating and sleeping better over the summer is a huge achievement in itself, with end-of-year parties, the festive season and extended holiday period all throwing routine out the window. “Sometimes days blur past and we forget when we last ate a quality vegetable or piece of fruit – unless orange in my Aperol counts!” Zoe says, laughing. “Most mornings, I make a green smoothie using Pressed Earth’s all veggie Greens Five juice and add coconut yoghurt, banana, chia seeds,
spinach and maybe protein powder – it gives me all the "my-body-is-atemple" vibes – and over summer, it becomes even more important to start my day this way.” Temple Lane owner and yoga teacher Nicola Garcia (@temple__ lane) agrees these smaller actions are the perfect way to support our good intentions that come with New Year resolutions. “A lot of our resolutions can be very vague like ‘lose weight’, but the brain loves a plan, so I break it down to actionable goals like three smoothies a

LIVE week for breakfast, three veggie-based soups a week and book an exercise class with a friend,” Nicola says. “On top of that, make sure you know why you’re doing it – the most important thing is to set your goal with kindness and love for yourself because you’re worth the effort, time and money to feel fantastic.” One of the biggest blockers to wellness, physically, mentally, and emotionally, is stress. Nicola says this time of year is a great opportunity to reflect upon how we manage stress relief. “Identify what your main stressors are, and if you can’t change them, how can you combat them because too much stress is dangerous for our health, a threat to our happiness and a killjoy in our relationships,” Nicola says. “Coming up with a plan to reduce stress is one the greatest gifts you can give yourself and your loved ones, because you deserve to feel joy, happiness and spaciousness in your life.” Nicola manages her stress through monthly Reiki treatments, regular yoga practice, and daily meditation and breathwork that she fits in around her work and family. Beyond these structured practices, she says swimming, running, travelling, eating wholefoods and spending time with loved ones all add to the full picture of wellness. “While I have practices that I repeat consistently because they’re intentional commitments to myself, there are small, everyday actions that also make a big difference,” Nicola says. “Just smile to yourself and enjoy the instant mood lift as it sends endorphins around your body, spend five minutes on your yoga mat stretching stiff muscles and breathing or chop up some veggies to snack on.” In between the Aperol Spritzes of the summer season, Zoe suggests visualising how you want life to look in 2024 with lots of detaill. Once you know the specifics, set that dream life into motion today and make time for what’s important to you. 64

Leaving a legacy MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO THE FUTURE OF OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR YOUNG PEOPLE CAN BE AS SIMPLE AS LEAVING A GIFT IN YOUR WILL. BY BROOKE EVANS-BUTLER
T
he Telethon Kids Institute is well-known in our community for the difference it makes to improve the health of children and young people. From the home of TKI (within Perth Children’s Hospital in Nedlands), the Institute is making a difference in cancer research, chronic disease, Aboriginal Health, mental health, infectious diseases, vaccines and much more. It's only a short drive from the heart of Subiaco and in this hub during the past year, more than 800 research projects are underway. Luckily, you don’t have to be a talented researcher to help the Institute make a difference. Generous locals are making an impact by leaving a legacy – a gift in their will to TKI. Local resident Anne Last says she grew up in an environment where it was normal to give back. She knows the money she leaves in her will is going to have long-term impact. “I know my gift to Telethon Kids Institute will have far reaching impact for kids in Australia and all around the world,” she says. “There are many children in my life – nieces
and nephews. I didn’t have children myself, so this is my way of bringing up healthy, happy kids. "It’s not just about them as kids, but the adults they become. Ensuring our kids have a great foundation in life is something I happily contribute to both now as a donor and in my will.” Alecia Benzie, Telethon Kids Institute Head of Development, says for more than 30 years, TKI’s worldclass researchers have been making life-changing break-throughs in Western Australia and beyond. “Including a gift in your will to the Institute means you can be part of making the future better for generations of children to come,” she says. “A future free from childhood disease and disadvantage, where treatments are personalised and preventative. Where all babies grow up strong and every kid gets a fair go to live their best life. That’s a remarkable way to be remembered.” She adds gifts in wills enable the Institute to attract the brightest and most talented researchers and ensure their discoveries make a real difference to kids and families in
Australia, and throughout the world. "A gift in your will is invested in the Institute’s endowment fund, living on as a legacy with the interest earned, supporting our researchers and our vision of happy, healthy kids." Those individuals who choose to leave a gift in their will to Telethon Kids are welcomed into the Fiona Stanley Circle. “Fiona Stanley Circle members are invited to bespoke events such as morning teas, tours of the Institute to meet and greet various researchers from time to time, as well as extended invitations to regular donor events and annual TKI events such as our Impact Report Launch,” Alecia explains. Professor Fiona Stanley joins these events whenever she can.

FREE FORM TEMP GALLERY CREATES SPACE FOR EMERGING ARTISTS, NEW COLLECTORS AND THOSE WHO APPRECIATE ART FOR REASONS THEY CAN’T ALWAYS ARTICULATE. By LISA O’NEILL. 66
Eat Shop Live
ROKEBY ROAD IS the latest location for Kate Parker’s Temp Gallery, a roving art exhibition and inspiration space that aims to bring many ‘green’ ingredients of the art sector together. With many Perth galleries and cultural spaces downsizing, closing or changing remit in the past 10 to 15 years, Kate saw the need for undiscovered or ‘early career’ artists to present their work in a public forum. Whether they’re fresh out of university, stepping out of the hobbyist label or realising their niche, amazing artists need that first rung on the exhibition ladder which isn’t readily available. “There’s been a gallery gap in the ecosystem that Temp is essentially
aiming to fill,” Kate said. “Having a gallery with no fixed address also reduces high overheads so I can ensure most of the money goes to the artists, rather than running a gallery business.” Previous iterations of Temp have been hosted in Northbridge, opening after work hours and weekends to capture the buzz of Northbridge’s café and bar scene. Kate recognised the huge potential of a Subiaco space with the influx of new bars, restaurants and events which have drawn a wide audience. “We want to put art in people’s way, so it pops up within your daily life rather than just drawing crowds who are seeking it out,” Kate explained. “Subiaco has a history of being a place of creativity and having a strong hospitality scene, and it seems to be rediscovering its identity in that space again.” The hospitality drawcard of Subiaco is paid heed in Temp’s theme for its exhibition ‘At The Table”, which examines the intersection between creativity and hospitality. The attending artists incorporate their interpretation of table culture in varying artistic formats. “Subiaco has an amazing community of early career or previously hobby-based artists who are a part of this exhibition,” Kate said. “We have a mixture of painting, ceramics, illustrations and one artist will be presenting a kitchen series of her jewellery.” The exhibition not only offers a space for emerging artists to sell their work or add an exhibition to their resumes, it creates the opportunity for new collectors to explore accessible art. Kate recognises Subiaco is filled with young families ready to dip their toes into the art scene and start to fill their new home’s blank walls. “We’ll be partnering with local business owners to have a gin tasting
Temp Gallery Subiaco Artists Chrissie Hogan This Subiaco-based artist works in both painting and ceramics, which is predicted to appeal to a wide audience. Kate says you’ll be able to apply Chrissie’s work in a variety of interior settings. Her recent ‘Vessels’ collection was close to selling out and Kate predicts big things for her during and beyond her time at Temp.
fits perfectly with the 'At The Table' theme and her presence will be more of a mentor in the Temp space.
Sultana Shamshi Sultana creates divine jewellery with ‘found’ materials, which are largely natural. Her recent ‘Kitchen Series’ is a lovely synchronicity with the ‘At The Table’ theme, using common ingredients such as peppercorns and star anise to create her wearable art.
Narelle Manser-Smith
Yubin Choi
Narelle’s exquisite work might not classify her as ‘emerging’, but she’s included in Temp Gallery as an important member of the Subiaco artists’ community. Her painting of still life and tablescapes are often based on her holiday experiences, and truly transport the observer to another, more blissful place, often with a glass of wine in view. Her work
With a tattoo artistry background, Yubin is a Perth-based artist hailing from South Korea. Her illustrations are colourful and laden with detail, and come in smaller pieces at Temp which makes her art even more accessible for the new collector. Kate says Yubin’s art provides a sense of home, a lived-in space and ‘a real place in your heart’.
and wine tasting within the gallery so you can come and experience the art alongside stuff you’re more familiar with,” Kate said. “Beyond that, we’ll also have a still life drawing class and art history talk to discuss the concept of ‘at the table’ to show more ways people can engage with art.” Kate hopes Temp Gallery will break down the sometimes intimidating walls of the art space. “People go to movies, live music or a show and offer their opinion with ease, but so often when you’re asked your opinion on art suddenly a wall comes up because people feel unqualified,” Kate said. “I want to hear what you like or don’t like about art, and you can articulate that in any way you want. Don’t like the colour? Cool, that’s legitimate! Art doesn’t require a formal, highly informed opinion.” So, no matter what your ‘art and culture’ status might be, it’s irrelevant in Subiaco’s Temp Gallery. Kate’s waiting to hear your thoughts and just maybe, you might take a slice of Subiaco-inspired artwork home to enjoy beyond Temp’s time with us.
APPETISING ART Temp Gallery's opening was a big hit on Rokeby Road, with its exhibition 'At The Table' running until November 11.

The Last
WORD
WITH Kim Knight
How long have you been into fitness? I have always loved movement from a very young age, from gymnastics, swimming, netball and fitness at the gym. I love doing weights sessions three times a week, and indoor cycling, which I have been teaching for over 20 years now. I just love the interval training on the bike - I love loud music and yelling at people, so it’s perfect for me . . .
Bar Amelie
Have you any favourite hang-outs in Subiaco? Since moving into Subi, I am just a stroll from Juanita’s which is very handy. I also really enjoy the chilli scrambled eggs at Café Melograno, before wandering over to Chez Jean-Claude Patisserie for a naughty but delicious treat. What are some of your favourite memories of artists coming to the Regal? I always come back to Billy Connolly and have such fond memories of him and his wife Pamela, when they performed here, and looking after their two girls, just such nice people. Kitty Flanagan is another wonderful human, and her lovely sister Penny.
Kim Knight, Owner of the Regal Theatre and fitness instructor at Lords. By GAIL WILLIAMS Portrait MATT JELONEK
N
ext February, the Regal Theatre will be hosting one of our State’s favourite sons, Tim Minchin, in an Unfunny Evening with Minchin and His Piano. Juanita's The theatre’s GM, Kim Knight, will happily come face-to-face with the multi-talented muso during his short season at her theatre. Lately, she’s popped up in the unlikely venue of Lords Recreation Centre in her side hustle as a fitness instructor in the RPM studio. And she’s cycling up a storm there too.
Regal Theatre
How did you manage to get Tim Minchin to come to the Regal? I feel that with this particular show Tim was looking for a more intimate space, and being that he is a local, he knows how great the Regal is to perform at. We are extremely lucky to have him come here and are very excited. How did you celebrate the 85th birthday of the Regal? We had a celebration at the theatre, welcoming along the community to come and have a walk through and party with us. Some people still haven’t seen the upgrades that have been made and how beautiful she is looking on the inside. Our next focus is to the get the outside looking as beautiful as the inside. 80

How has Subiaco evolved since your first association with the Regal? I have been here since 1977 so I’ve seen it go through peaks and troughs. Now I’m really excited to see so many new places opening up and a buzz around town again. It has always been there for me. As much as many other things may have changed, I would love to see some more retail come back into the area - I remember in my 20's being able to do all my shopping in Subiaco, and I’d love to see some of that back.
What do you think is the most significant factor for the apparent re-energising of Subiaco? The obvious one is ONE Subiaco, and what a great development it is. The City of Subiaco, with the See Subiaco team, have done some amazing activations and continue to evolve and grow these events to become wellknown not just within the area but also beyond the City. Where do you think Tim Minchin might pop up for an after-show bevvy? I would think that Tim is someone who would like a more intimate place to pop in for a drink, possibly somewhere like Bar Amelie, or Cherubino’s, even BARK for their Jazz and Shiraz night.
