AUCKLAND
Today's the day! Up at an ungodly 4:10 AM. I have 29 hours of travel in front of me before I get to my big adventure - Jeez Paddington Bear is a long way from the Ville
SANTIAGO
Made it to South USA! Not much sleep and a lot of turbulence, but nothing a Starbucks coffee can't fix. Observing the attire here lots of backpacks and trekking gear Meanwhile, I'm in my Witchery outfit and sparkly shoes. One of these things is not like the other! Is it at this point I just change flights to go straight to Miami with deck chairs and cabana boys??? NO, SUCK IT UP PRINCESS, you've got this!
LIMA
Welcome to Lima, home of 10 million apparently. I believe 9 million of them were at the airport Finally in bed in Lima! Traffic chaos, but my driver navigated it like a hero.
MIRAFLORES
My morning started at Maccas for coffee. Had a great sleep thanks to half a Serapax. Explored a closed avenue bustling with locals exercising in various ways very community-focused! Tried to blend in while wrestling with an awkward money belt.
Visited Laco del Mar, an open-air shopping centre with ocean views Enjoyed Corona and seafood rice at Mangos, followed by an accidental discovery of a churros cafe indulged in cafe con leche and caramel-filled churros, messy but delicious. Embraced local treats despite the calorie overload
Met our small tour group, including just me from Australia. Excitedly discussed our itinerary and had a satisfying dinner downtown roast pork rolls and strawberry slushies. Bedtime came late, struggled to sleep but eventually managed
PARACAS
Started the day with a satisfying hotel breakfast, better than expected. Needed a good coffee fix, so headed to Starbucks for a reliable cup. Managed to visit the kissing stature, although missed the ruins due to a wrong turn
Arrived in Paracas just in time for sunset. The hotel was basic but clean, and we quickly dropped off our things before heading out for happy hour.
NASCA
Great breakfast on the rooftop overlooking the water. Headed to Ballestas Island for birdwatching and sea lion spotting boat ride smooth despite the previous night's festivities Lots of pelicans and adorable sea wolves Also lots of bird poo! Visited Huachina, an oasis in the desert, for lunch and dune bugging opted for the crazy ride, regretted it! Survived sandboarding with pockets full of sand Back in Nasca, enjoyed a chilly swim and a 2 5hr drive to our cosy three-star hotel
AREQUIPA
Skipped the Nasca lines flight for a visit to the desert cemetery of Chauchilla eerie but fascinating. Dreaded the overnight bus to Arequipa, but survived despite nerves arrived in one piece, grateful for the safe journey.
COLCA CANYON
Started early for Colca Canyon, ascending to 4910 metres from Arequipa's 2700 metres First stop for coca leaves and lollies to combat altitude sickness. At the highest point, felt light-headed but managed. Arrived in Chivay, where the renovated hotel awaited.
AREQUIPA
Another early start with rooftop breakfast, not quite worth the altitude trek. Headed to see condors, world's largest birds, on a rough, dusty road Despite crowds, marvelled at these massive birds and their chicks.
CUSCO
Despite a half-hour flight delay, the journey to Cusco was smooth and scenic Prepared for the upcoming trek with last-minute shopping
OLLYANTAYTAMBO/SACRED VALLEY
First, we visited the Christ statue for breath taking views of Cusco, capturing great photos Next, we explored Pisac ruins in the Sacred Valley, a challenging ascent due to altitude and exertion. Dinner at a restaurant featured quesadillas to ease concerns about spicy food before the trekking days ahead.
THE TREK BEGINS
Today was the day I've been waiting for. After an early breakfast, we met our friendly second guide and boarded our minivan to join our group of nine at the 82km mark. The first day was manageable, with "Peruvian pathways" (meaning lots of ups and downs) along a river After lunch, we trekked 11km, ascending only 150m but it took us 5 hours. Arriving at our night camp, our tents were already set up. Despite the anticipation, I struggled to sleep, but I kept reminding myself with notes like "you've got this" and "suck it up princess" for motivation
We woke at 5am to coco tea and prepared for a challenging day.
The trek to Dead Women's Pass was grueling, 5 hours uphill with breaks every 1 5 hours I struggled at the back with our guide, often pausing to catch my breath
A two-hour descent followed, where my training paid off I led downhill. By 2pm, we reached camp, done for the day.
DAY 3 OF THE TREK
DAY 4 OF TREK - MACHU PICCHU
Waking at 3am after a restless night, the warmth made sleep elusive
Ascending to the Sun Gate took 1.5hrs, navigating wet tracks and the challenging Monkey Steps. Tears welled as we reached the Sun Gate, even through clouds goal achieved!
Exploring the terraces, our guide shared insights for 2 hours Then, two blissful hours solo to wander, snap photos, and savour my first real coffee in days pure bliss. Machu Picchu, a dream realised, felt surreal and magical atop the steep mountain.
Another 5am start, today our longest trek: 16km in 9 hours. Body stiff, but moving helped. Started with a tough 2-hour uphill to 3950m hard reality check earned the nickname "Rocket" for my downhill pace, thanks to Castle Hill training
Early dinner and farewell to porters off early for their 5:30am train. Our 3am wake-up loomed. Feeling skanky, wet wipes and reused clothes. Looking forward to Machu Picchu and a shower.
