Patrons who do not observe this courtesy and create distractions may be asked to leave. Thank you.

WHY YOU SHOULD

SUPPORT

the Center

The Gallo Center for the Arts is a non-profit performing arts center with a deep commitment to enriching the people and communities of California’s vast San Joaquin Valley. From the scintillating performances of its wonderful resident companies, to the great variety of world-class entertainment presented by the Center each season, to robust arts education programs for the region’s youth, this is where the magic happens. From the beginning, the Center’s mission has been clearly defined: to provide an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national, and international cultural activities illuminate, educate, and entertain. Since revenue from ticket sales and facility rentals only covers a portion of the costs associated with fulfilling this mission, the Center is dependent on the generous annual financial support from donors and program sponsors within our community. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is produced in cooperation with Playscripts, Inc.

SPONSORED BY DOUG AND SUSAN HIGHIET

Director’s Note

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a beloved, iconic movie from the year 1967, directed and produced by Stanley Kramer, starring Spencer Tracy, Kathrine Hepburn, and Sidney Portier. It is the story of an interracial relationship, brought home to the white, liberal parents in the liberal city of San Francisco. The comedy-drama shows many of the issues we can think about, the first shock, from the white and the black side, reactions of friends and employees, disappointments, jokes, and the love between the young couple that conquers all. The film script was adapted, almost 2 generations later, by Todd Kreidler to a successful stage script which premiered in 2012. For several projects Todd Kreidler worked closely with the well-known playwright August Wilson whose famous American Century Cycle depicts the black experience in the US over ten decades. Needless to say, the newer stage script is more modern, grittier, more updated to the contemporary sensitivities. As Matt Drayton points out towards the end of the play: “There’ll be a hundred million people right here in this country who will be shocked and offended by the two of you….You can try to ignore all those people. Maybe you can feel sorry for them and sorry for their prejudice and bigotry and their blind hatred and their stupid fears. But where necessary you will just to hold tight to each other and say screw all those people.” This show was basically cast, and preparations were made last spring, then it had to be postponed to fall of last year, then to spring of 2021, then rehearsed with strict COVID protocol for the season opener this September. It has been difficult to say the least, but the hard work, I think, is paying off. The cast is fantastic, so are all the designers, working under complicated conditions in these complicated years. I thank my dear friend Jim Johnson for his trust in me and for being such a

good leading actor. I also thank my husband David for making it through all the lonely evenings, waiting up for me to come home to Merced. Enjoy the show, real live theater on the stage, and be safe! Heike Hambley Director

Artistic Director’s Note

In March 2020, we were lucky to complete the Gallo Center Repertory Company production of Little Women before the COVID pandemic closed the Center. At the time were preparing for our upcoming production of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. We were hopeful that the pandemic would be over in a matter of months, and we would resume rehearsals. Alas, it was not meant to be. Our local theatre company has been dark now for the past 18 months. At last, observing state and federal health guidelines, we are presenting the long-delayed production of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. It has been a curious journey. Actors and others were required to be vaccinated, to have temperature checks before entering the building, and to always wear masks. Heike Hambley, our director, was forced to give stage directions to actors who had half of their faces hidden. The actors struggled at times because they couldn’t speak clearly wearing masks. Nevertheless, we all pulled together and focused on making this the best show possible. So, we welcome you back and thank you for your ongoing support. During the past 18 months we have tried to keep the artistic spirit alive by filming eight “Virtual Theater” performances that were offered free through the Gallo Center’s YouTube channel. They are

still there. Check them out! I want to give a very special thanks to videographer Wes Page and all the community actors who volunteered their time to make these projects happen. Our play is based on the classic film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner starring Spencer Tracy, Kathrine Hepburn, and Sidney Portier. The original screenplay was written by William Rose and was adapted for the stage by Todd Kreidler. Mr. Kreidler worked in close association with playwright August Wilson on Broadway and in regional theatres across the country, developing the final three plays in Wilson’s famed American Century Cycle. His adaptation of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner has been widely and successfully produced throughout the country. As a director, Kreidler has staged several of August Wilson’s plays including Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Our own local Sankofa Theatre Company will stage this play in February 2022 at the Gallo Center. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is set in the mid-1960s. Our scenic and costume designers have collaborated to give our production an authentic period look. Many of the issues presented in the play are still very relevant to our racial divide in 2021. It is our hope that you enjoy our production and find contemporary meaning in the issues and problems presented. Jim Johnson Artistic Director Gallo Center Repertory Company

In doing so, she hopes to aim her efforts at educating others on how to enact social change. For this summer she is helping with the Summer Camps orchestrated by Modesto Junior College as a student aide. Through this, Raquel had the opportunity to become an assistant stage manager for the Gallo Center Repertory Company’s production of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Raquel enjoys playing the guitar and spending time with her family. Some of the places she likes to visit are Santa Cruz and San Francisco.

HEIKE HAMBLEY (DIRECTOR) has worked extensively as director and performer in the Central Valley in the last 25 years. Since the inception of the Gallo Center Repertory Company (GCRC) under the leadership of Dr. Jim Johnson, she directed there every season: Inherit the Wind, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Miracle Worker, and Tuesdays with Morrie. She originally had planned to direct Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner for the spring of 2020! She also has performed and directed at Playhouse Merced, Prospect Theater Project and Center Stage in Modesto. She is Merced’s Shakespeare Lady, the Founder and Artistic Director of Merced Shakespearefest, where she has directed close to 30 of Shakespeare’s plays, a few of them more than once. During COVID lockdown in 2020 she became the Executive Producer of the bilingual Ricardo web series; this spring she produced the bilingual Don Quixote film episodes in which she also performed. Originally from Germany, she has lived for over 30 years in Merced, loves her expanding family, and is happily married to David Hambley, who often performs on Merced and Modesto stages.

In 2008, Dr. Johnson received the Stanislaus County Arts Council Lifetime Achievement award. In 2016, he was named the Artistic Director of the Gallo Center Repertory Company. He wishes to dedicate his performance to the memory of Barbara Kelly, his “theatre angel.”

DAVE KEYMER (MONSIGNOR RYAN) This is the sixth play Dave Keymer has acted in for director Heike Hambley, including playing the roles of Prospero in The Tempest, Lear in King Lear and Matthew Brady in Inherit the Wind (the latter at the Gallo Center). An obscure fact about his past: when he was young, he was crew member for three years on the last traveling showboat in the world, the Showboat Majestic, performing vaudeville and melodrama for river audiences in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. He is delighted to be back in Modesto after five years away.

CHERYLL MITCHELL KNOX (TILLIE) is an educator in special education. She took theatre in high school and participated in many school theatrical productions and talent shows. She continues to exercise her craft by participating in theatrical productions in her home town and surrounding areas. Some of the plays include: The Hitch Hiker, A Raisin In The Sun, The Piano Lesson, A Christmas Memory, Ragtime, Porgy and Bess, Freedom Riders, Tawawa House, Radio Hour, and Don’t Bother Me I Can’t Cope. She has participated in a host of gospel plays. Part of Cheryll’s ministry is singing about the Good News of Jesus Christ in the community. Cheryll along with three other dear friends are the founders of Sankofa Theatre Company, the first African American theatre company in the Central Valley. Sankofa has joined forces with The Gallo Center for the Arts, providing excitement, entertainment and educational performances to individuals seeking top notch talent!

KRISTA JOY SERPA (JOANNA DRAYTON) is overjoyed to be back on the Gallo Center stage again, where her previous appearances include Maria in The Sound of Music, Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Lucy in Jekyll & Hyde, and Kate Keller in The Miracle Worker, also with Gallo Center Rep. Krista splits her time between the Valley and the Bay Area; a few other favorite adventures include Into The Woods (Theatre-At-Large; SFBATCC nominee for Best Supporting Actress), Our Town (Altarena Playhouse,) A Streetcar Named Desire (Stage 3), Les Miserables (Sierra Rep), and most recently Regan in Prospect Theatre Project’s King Lear. She is particularly delighted to be telling this beautiful and important story with Adam Torrian, after they previously shared the stage together as Othello & Desdemona in Othello for Merced Shakespearefest. You can catch Krista next as Guenevere in Camelot with The Mountain Play, playing at The Barn Theatre in Marin County this November & December! All love and gratitude to Jim, Heike, Erin, and all of you meeting us back at the theater we’ve missed you. For Mr. Serpa, always. 1 John 4:7.

NOELLE SOUZA (COSTUME DESIGNER) is thrilled to be back working with GCRC! For the stage, she has recently designed YES Company’s 30th Anniversary Concert Spectacular and Singin’ in the Rain as well as Little Women for GCRC and Men on Boats for Playhouse Merced. For television, she has worked as the wardrobe stylist for over 15 national commercials for the brand, Grocery Outlet. Ms. Souza holds a degree from the University of San Diego, and you can find more information about her work on her website: www.noellesouza.com.

ADAM C TORRIAN (DR. JOHN PRENTICE) is grateful to be back at the Gallo Center, where he has previously performed in The Piano Lesson and Fences with Sankofa Theatre Company. Since earning his AA in Theatre, a couple of his favorite roles have been John in The Whipping Man with Prospect Theater Project and the title role in Othello with Merced Shakes & Playhouse Merced.

CHARLENE WEST (CHRISTINE DRAYTON): Whoever said “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” may never have heard of COVID. But a forced hiatus from theater has certainly given Charlene a renewed gratefulness for the ability to once again perform in front of a live audience. A big thank you to each one of you for being here and supporting this very special production. Charlene has been performing on stage for most of her adult life, with productions in the Bay Area, Oregon, Modesto, Merced, Sonora and Murphys. She has a special affinity for performing the classics and Shakespeare. In real life, Charlene is a retired middle school counselor and adjunct professor, and dedicates this performance to her husband and her 4 adorable grandchildren.
