That said, while I can’t take credit for putting the current season together, there are plenty of shows I’ve either booked elsewhere or worked with in various capacities and I’m happy to share a few of my top picks this year. Tape Face is a character created by performer Sam Wills of New Zealand: delightful, wry, many-layered, hilarious and with universal appeal—an appeal transcending age, language borders and culture, drawing on a heritage that includes silent film, mime, magic, puppetry, prop comedy, Motown and the films of Patrick Swayze. Tape Face is a pensive, curious soul approaching every object and audience member as a potential friend – or plaything. Shoes sing, empty dresses dance and electrical tape blossoms into roses; he creates a world of possibilities where the only certainty is laughter.

AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH AN

American Songwriting Genius!

TICKETS: $29/49/59 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee JD Souther is “one of the most celebrated songwriters of his generation," writes Interview Magazine. “Raised on a steady diet of big band and jazz during his childhood, Souther has routinely returned to that music— as well as the genius songwriters of the early 20th century (Gershwin, Cole Porter)—for inspiration. On his latest studio album, Tenderness, Souther combines these musical threads, striking a perfect balance between understated jazz and the ineffable pop narratives that have been the backbone of much of his greatest work." In addition to his own formidable musical output, Souther has penned countless hits for, among many others, The Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. This charming solo performance will linger in your memory for a very long time.

Mr. Cano played a fundamental role in the growth of mariachi music in the United States by training and mentoring new generations of musicians. This mariachi giant was a visionary leader who wanted to take the mariachi performance out of customary locations such as cantinas and into concert halls. That vision was fulfilled, and over its 59year history Mariachi Los Camperos has recorded and performed with artists including Pedro Fernandez, Linda Ronstadt, Pepe Aguilar, Angeles Ochoa, Luis Miguel and many more. The company today is led by musical director Jesus "Chuy" Guzman.

Summer Soirée 2021 SCENE AT THE CENTER:

16

August 12, 2021, saw the return of the Gallo Center’s always popular Summer Soirée, its first in two years. The event, graciously hosted by Ann and Brian Kline at their Wycliffe home, was an evening of appreciation for members of Center Circles donor group and corporate sponsors. It also was an opportunity for the nearly 200 in attendance to meet the Center’s new chief executive officer, Chad Hilligus, and his husband Mark Powell. Having gone through an emergency appendectomy only a few days before, it was something of a minor miracle that Mr. Hilligus was even upright.
