The Gallo Center has adopted the use of digital programs meant to be viewed on cell phones or other computer devices. This change has important public health, environmental and economic benefits: reducing close contacts between patrons and ushers, cutting our use of paper, and eliminating substantial printing costs. View the program only before shows begin or during intermissions. Please be considerate of other patrons and artists on stage by not viewing it during performances. Patrons who do not observe this courtesy and create distractions may be asked to leave. Thank you!
The Gallo Center for the Arts is a non-profit performing arts center with a deep commitment to enriching the people and communities of California’s vast San Joaquin Valley. From the scintillating performances of its wonderful resident companies, to the great variety of world-class entertainment presented by the Center each season, to robust arts education programs for the region’s youth, this is where the magic happens.
From the beginning, the Center’s mission has been clearly defined: to provide an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national, and international cultural activities illuminate, educate, and entertain. Since revenue from ticket sales and facility rentals only covers a portion of the costs associated with fulfilling this mission, the Center is dependent on the generous annual financial support from donors and program sponsors within our community.

The 1914 Christmas Truce was an extraordinary series of unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front during World War I. For a brief time—hours, days, or even weeks in some areas—soldiers from opposing sides set aside their weapons and ventured into the treacherous expanse of No Man’s Land. These men, often exhausted and disillusioned by the relentless violence, shared songs, stories, mementos, and rations in a rare moment of humanity amidst the chaos.
“People in England will never believe it. I am sure— even to us it seems unreal.” (93)
During this historical ceasefire, these men not only sang and celebrated but also took time to rebuild trenches and to mourn and bury the dead. Together, they honored fallen soldiers from both sides, even carrying soldiers who had fallen on enemy lines back to their brothers. Despite enduring the unthinkable horrors of war for months or even years, they found it within themselves to show remarkable benevolence. Honoring humanity—even in the midst of unspeakable violence—was not dead. This act of service reminds us all of the power of compassion, even in the darkest of times.
In Mike Hill’s Christmas Truce: By the Men Who Took Part, the letters from soldiers are profoundly moving. They reveal not only the men’s deep weariness with the war but also their efforts to process this astonishing, bittersweet moment of peace. Many were caught in a painful tension: embracing an unexpected camaraderie with their enemies while knowing that, eventually, they would be ordered to return to the horrors of battle.
“It is terrible to think that on one day we can be at such peace, with such good feeling, and on the others we must occupy our minds inventing diabolical methods of destroying one another.” (27)
As we bring this production of All Is Calm to life, I am struck by the courage and vulnerability of these soldiers. This story reminds us that even in the most desperate moments, the human spirit can find ways to connect, to hope, and to honor the shared humanity that binds us all. I hope this performance inspires you to reflect on the power of peace, the resilience of the human heart, and the lessons we can still learn from their profound act of service.

For the past 11 years he has been performing in various dance and theater productions throughout the central valley. He was most recently seen as Comptroller Schub in Stanislaus State’s production of Anyone Can Whistle, and as Will Parker in YES Company’s production of Oklahoma! Some of his past favorite musical theater credits include The Addams Family (Gomez), Annie (Warbucks), A Christmas Story the Musical (Ralphie), Newsies, and The Music Man (Winthrop). Roland is honored to have the opportunity to share the true stories of these World War I heroes in All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914. He is very heartfelt and thoughtful in the preparation for the storytelling and music in this production. Roland would like to thank his family and friends for their love and support.

Tim Glidewell has been passionate about performing since elementary school, with memorable roles including Ren McCormick in Footloose, Danny Zuko and Kenickie in Grease, Cecile in The Play That Goes Wrong, and Juror 4 in 12 Angry Jurors at the Gallo Center last year. After more than a decade away from musicals, Tim is thrilled to return, especially under the musical direction of his former Downey High School choir teacher, Polly Vasché, whom he’s honored to work with again. Outside of acting, Tim is a biotechnology sales professional and the owner of Classic Books for All, a business dedicated to making classic literature more accessible for young children with simplified language and vibrant illustrations. Check out their collections at classicbooksforall.com.

They have been pursuing theatre for about seven years, and have recently done shows with the Merced Multicultural Art Center, Merced College, Playhouse Merced, Merced Shakespearefest, and Kraken Theatre. have performed in several prominent roles, including Brad Majors in Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, and Treasurer Cooley in Stephen Sondheim’s Anyone Can Whistle. This is their first show with GCRC here at the Gallo Center for the Arts, and they could not be more excited to be a part of this production!

Dean has been in a number of film projects since 2010, including Professor Higgins in Checkmate (2010), Mr. Isaac in I Rise (2022, currently on Amazon Prime), and The Man in Giggin’ (currently in postproduction). Dean likes to describe his work in theater, by quoting Eric Liddle: “Yes, God made me for a purpose – but he also made me fast. And when I run, I can feel his pleasure.” Dean: “I feel the same way when I’m acting, I can feel his pleasure.” Dean has been married to Cheryl Louie Medek for 35 years. Together they have three grown daughters: Amy, Deanna, and Jana.
Julian Steffens is honored to be a part of this production. He previously appeared in GCRC’s 1984 and is pleased to work with GCRC again. He will pursue his BFA in Musical Theater following his education at MJC. He sends his thanks to his friends, family and all his mentors for their endless support. Enjoy the show!
Christopher Todd is a seasoned musician going back to his early childhood. He was Curly for his high school production of Oklahoma! and Jean Val Jean in Les Miserables for Townsend Opera Players. This is Christopher’s second time performing in All Is Calm at the Gallo Center. He’d like to thank his friends and family over the years for their support thru his journey as musician. He would like to give a special thanks to his lovely wife, Crystal, for being the one to encourage him to audition for this show.
