YES COMPANY IS A PARTNERSHIP OF: Gallo Center for the a r t s

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Dear Patrons,

One of my favorite things about the performing arts is what they can evoke in us. Oklahoma! has drawn forth more than I could have imagined. Nostalgia, laughter, and hope are prevalent themes throughout, but I’ve also found myself riddled with questions about societal obligation, what it takes to build community, and the responsibility we all share in shaping the world we live in.

Oklahoma! holds an important place in history. Produced in 1943, it served as an escape for audiences as they grappled through the horrors of World War II. It was arguably the first musical of its time that combined music, dance, and text as equal means of storytelling - thus beginning the Golden Age of musicals that so many of us cherish. It also presents commentary on female independence and the necessity for communities to find common ground. It then confronts the cost when difference and diversity are not embraced, but are instead rejected. All topics ahead of its time and still relevant today, making Oklahoma! an important rite of passage for young theater makers.

Throughout the process of creating this production, this cast of intelligent, passionate, and curious students have engaged in dissecting these questions and themes through discussion, play, and performance. As the characters in Oklahoma! build their relationships and community ties on the backdrop of impending statehood, so to has this cast navigated the building of this company. They’ve worked hard, laughed, been frustrated, made and defended their artistic choices, then changed their minds. They’ve had creative breakthroughs and days where nothing seems to go right. They’ve had fun, made glorious mistakes and most importantly, been given the chance to grow.

When you watch this production, whatever it evokes in you, I hope you allow it to resonate within you long after you leave the theater. I hope you see more than just a shockingly talented group of teenagers. I hope you see what I see: endless possibility and a bright future. These are our next generation of artists, teachers, and policy makers. I have no doubt that they will lead with compassion, empathy, and integrity.

Without a community effort, YES Company does not exist. I want to personally thank the incredible team that contributed to the success of this program and production. Particularly the guidance and support of Director of Arts Education, Cortney Hurst, who also stepped into the role of Rehearsal Mistress as we tackled one of the most well-known dance musicals of all time. A feat to be sure, but one these two former dancers loved dearly. I am grateful for the trust this community continues to place in me to educate the next generation of performing artists. It is because of Gallo Center staff, Stanislaus County Office of Education, local designers, volunteers, families, alumni, donors and patrons like you that YES Company remains a place where students not only feel safe to be exactly who they are, but are supported in their journeys of self-discovery. Thank you for your continued support.

Lastly, I would like to dedicate this performance to my late grandfather, Don Stevenson who in his last few days sang nothing but “Oklahoma.” You are missed, you are loved.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Setting: Indian Territory (now the state of Oklahoma)

Time: Just after the turn of the century

The groundbreaking musical that set the stage for all that followed! Rodgers & Hammerstein’s exuberant classic is a lively, tuneful musical full of cowboys, farmers, romance and fearless optimism. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, setting the standards and rules of modern musical theatre. In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly, a charming cowboy, and Laurey, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land.

As you read in the Director’s Note, the original script and story of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! is laced with themes of independence, community and the notion of common good as seen through the individual characters’ story lines and their collective effort in the place they call home becoming a state. Because statehood is a central theme, students spent some time reviewing their US History, and the timeline and journey of Oklahoma’s statehood. We invite you to read about and reflect on it, too. In 1803, the land that eventually becomes the state of Oklahoma is given to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. On May, 28, 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed into law the Indian Removal Act, authorizing the president to grant lands west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian lands within existing state borders. A few tribes went peacefully, but many resisted the relocation policy. This mass involuntary movement would become known as The Trail of Tears. The land that would become Oklahoma is where tribes were forced to live and was called Indian Territory. From 1830-1875, over 25 Native American tribes were relocated to Oklahoma. In 1889, the United States opened the lands to settlers. Colonizers from Texas were allowed to cross the borders at designated times and claim land. If they crossed early they were called “Sooners”. In 1890 the lands are officially recognized as Oklahoma Territory and eventually becomes the 47th state on November 16, 1907. Our story of Oklahoma! takes place in 1906. The new settlers (our farmers, cowmen and their families)

The over 25 tribes relocated to the Oklahoma Territory includes: Cherokee, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Comanche, Apache, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Peoria, Quapaw, Ottawa, Modoc, Shawnee, Wyandotte, Seneca, Kaw, Tonkawa (Nez Perce), Ponca, Otoe-Missouria, Osage, Pawnee, Sac, Fox, Iowa, Kickapoo, Potawatomi, Shawnee, Seminole, Wichita, Caddo.

At the Gallo Center for the Arts, we acknowledge that we are on the ancestral and unceded land of the Yokut People. We are grateful to the Yokut People who have stewarded this land throughout the generations, and pay our respect to elders both past and present.

Through a unique eight week preparation process that combines both practical training and curriculum based performing arts, students learn to develop their individual craft alongside an ensemble of peers. It’s through this work as an ensemble that students gain a sense of community through trust, acceptance, and celebration of their differences as they work toward a common goal. YES Company is a partnership of Gallo Center for the Arts and Stanislaus County Office of Education.

YES ACADEMY: YES Academy provides year-long musical theater education, performance, and community engagement opportunities for current YES Company and graduating Gallo Center Youth Academy students. Through YES Academy, students will engage in regular musical theater classes (including vocal, dance and acting) and masterclasses in other theatrical production elements. These masterclasses include but are not limited to: lighting, sound design, costume, set, and properties design, stage management, higher education, audition preparation, and performing arts/creative careers. Participation in YES Academy is by audition.

GALLO CENTER YOUTH ACADEMY: Gallo Center Youth Academy is an afterschool musical theater program for students in grades 1-8. Through a unique ten week semester, students receive both practical training and curriculum based performing arts teaching as they develop their individual craft alongside an ensemble of their peers. Each semester culminates in a musical theater production presented in the Foster Family Theater. Gallo Center Youth Academy is a partnership of Gallo Center for the Arts and Stanislaus County Office of Education.

CREATION STATION SUMMER CAMP: Creation Station is a week-long musical theater camp for students in grades 1-6. Each summer, Creation Station takes on a new theme through which campers experience and learn about all aspects of the performing arts. The week-long camp culminates in a showcase performance for friends and family in the Foster Family Theater.

BROADWAY DAY SERIES: A unique experience made available to all students in grades 1-12 in our region with exclusive and behind the scenes access to the Center’s touring productions. Students participate in a masterclass themed about the show, sit in a special reserved section with fellow students and members of the GCA Arts Education team, receive a discounted ticket price and attend a post-show talkback with members of the cast or production staff.
