I am not really sure what to do when I first start this module as the freedom was completely up to us on which briefs to work onto. One thing I knew was that I do not want to rush things resulting unsatisfying outcomes. I decided to take this module for my daily practice so I can get working on other module as well without spending too much time stressing about it. Turns out this actually were a good idea as I have some ‘escapes’ from other modules’ pressure. This gave me an opportunity to work on something that is stressed free and as a result I enjoyed the whole process. As I recently decided to take collaging seriously, the briefs allowed me to develop as a practitioner in that area of work simply by having to apply the practice on a daily basis. I chose to work on the small briefs since the very start of the module. This decision was made to avoid my poor time management skills as I had experienced before in level 4. Illustration Friday is an online platform that gave a new topic to work onto every week and submit it by Friday. The ideas and process I did for this brief was pretty spontaneous, as I do not want to spend my time thinking too much about it. On the other hand, LCA Film Society gave me an opportunity to apply my practice into my interest in films. Every week they screen different movies and offer students to make poster to promote their film screenings. Working on this brief had taught me to refine my digital skills and obtain understanding in composing different elements in a design. Illustration 12 came out the last, as this was a replacement brief for Secret 7. It facilitates me to experiment with collage as a medium: trying out combinations, figuring how to put the pieces together, and also adding some colours and textures. The big brief I chose was from Penguin Design Award, which required designing a full cover spread for ‘In Cold Blood’ book. I think this a perfect opportunity to challenge myself in creating something to persuade people to read as soon as they see a cover design. I did an in depth research for the brief, reading articles about the case even the news that circulated around it. But most importantly, my initial ideas came through when I did some research about Penguin book covers. It got me inspired which then made me decide to design something simple considering shapes, colours, and textures. Although this brief probably was not as enjoyable as the others because I got frustrated when I failed in designing the final outcome. I failed to portray the ‘playfulness’ using symbols in the first design, because it looks boring. After reconsideration I focused on the use of textures and intend to describe the dark atmosphere from the book, resulting a quite satisfying outcome. Working on collaborative brief was really enjoyable and satisfying. We chose the brief from ‘Fur For Animals’ to design an online content (images or video) for an anti-fur campaign. We saw this as an opportunity to challenge ourselves in creating a fun and interesting dark joke campaign, in a form of stop motion animation using collage as the chosen medium. I considered myself lucky to work with understanding and supportive people. Despite a bit of misunderstanding regarding technical problem, we overcome it with group discussions. It trained me to work fast and efficient too because each person is responsible of something, and I wanted it to make as little mistakes as possible so other people in my group does not need to deal with the consequences. I gain knowledge to cooperate with people and also my interest in stop motion gain more professional approach.

Overall this module has helped a lot in developing myself as a collage practitioner. Throughout the entire process of working on in each briefs, I valued my sense of spontaneity the most. I figured that the more enjoyable the process are, the more satisfied I am with the outcomes, and most of the time this is because I did not pressure myself in thinking too much about expectations within my results of work. I also gained a lot of confidence in working with collage. I am more comfortable in doing it as I tried to maintain the daily basis pace. Above all, I succeed to improve my time management skills and balance all of the workload in proper scheduled time, which enable me to defeat the deadlines.
