Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information) At first I thought this module wouldn’t be that different for me from last year. I thought it would just be a bunch of my regular posts mainly recording what I do from other modules, and what I found interesting within this creative industry. I guess I was wrong. Looking back to what I posted after almost a year, I can learn and understand myself as a practitioner better than before. I learn that consistency is important to understand my position as a practitioner. The 503 module encourage us to create something in response to a brief that we find interesting. I think this is what pushes me to maintain my blog posts as I’ve been regularly doing the movie poster brief and Illustration Friday every week. The outcome is not the most important thing, whether I liked it or not. It’s the process I’ve been recording in my posts that allows me to understand my strength, weakness, and what I need to improve. I can also see this as an exercise for me to keep producing something in a regular basis. Refining my skills in my choice of method, trying to be inventive every time I create something. Surprisingly I also learn a lot of new knowledge just by doing regular research to find concept and ideas in response to the brief. I had also learned that my method in producing work has completely changed since last year. I was really into drawing with colour pencils when I realised I’m not that meticulous and always unsatisfied with my outcomes. Even the process itself was very slow and I was being impatient all the time. This has come to my realisation when I reflect upon myself, that I need something more spontaneous and I need to be able to enjoy the process of what I’m doing. Luckily I got the answer in 504 module, when I first did a quick zine using collage because of the time given was very short and I don’t want to rely on my slow and impatient drawing self. This really triggers me, as I’m excited to found a new method of working which suits me best. Then it develop into an in depth research where I conduct an investigation throughout the subject of Dada and Surrealism for my COP module. It gave me a good understanding of the basic foundation in working with collage. I also got to experiment more combination, knowing the rationale behind the method and ideology, which help me to refine my personal skill in this chosen medium. I had a really great time doing my visual development and my visual experimentation as a practitioner. One of my biggest concerns from last year was that I couldn’t point out what kind of illustrator I want to become. But after doing the study tasks and research within the creative industry, collaborating with people for the project group, and discussed our work, it helps me to determine what kind of person I am and my aspirations as a practitioner. I know that sending an important message through illustration is what I wanted to do. I learn that what intrigues me with practicing collage is that sense of ambiguity, and how I can translate my tone of voice through those images. I understand the importance of humour within my work - dark humour to be precise – as this is the most effective way to communicate and engage with people. I wanted to use my illustration as a way to narrate a cause in a fun way using character designs. Something I wouldn’t discover about myself if I didn’t go through all of that professional research and collaborative teamwork. To sum it up, this has been an enjoyable moment for me to have an actual thought and reflection on myself, why I wanted to become an illustrator in the first place. I finally found a meaning and intention on my work, and a process of production that I enjoy and looking forward to produce something else every time. I sensed that purpose is the most important aspect to translate when doing work, and how this will affect the audience. I considered myself improved a lot than last year, in practical and professional development. I can manage my time a lot better than I did, and I also learn that I can handle multi-tasking. I wanted to continue to thrive as a collage artist in the future.
